Afghanistan
Civilians Flee as Clashes Erupt in Helmand
The Taliban are competing for strong horse credibility with newcomers ISIS, so they have to show they still have what it takes.
[AnNahar] Panicked residents fled the capital of the opium-rich southern Afghan province of Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
Wednesday after the Taliban stormed an outlying neighborhood, triggering festivities as the holy warriors step up offensives around the country.

The Taliban late Tuesday seized some police checkpoints in Babaji, a suburb of Lashkar Gah city, but the interior ministry said commando units mounted a swift counter-attack, flushing out the faceless myrmidons from the area.

"The situation is under control. The enemy have been pushed back, 25 of their fighters have been killed," ministry front man Sediq Sediqqi told AFP.

Afghan forces were also battling the Taliban in Nad Ali and Greshk districts close to Lashkar Gah, where holy warriors captured a number of security posts, provincial governor Mirza Khan Rahimi said.

The fighting, which sent scores of families fleeing to neighboring provinces, has also threatened the highway which links the major southern city of Kandahar with Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
and Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
The violence in Helmand comes precisely a year after the Camp Bastion base, a hub for British forces, was turned over to local troops.

The province, a Taliban hotbed where U.S. and British troops were involved in years of fierce fighting, is also one of the world's biggest centers of opium cultivation.

Emboldened by their brief capture of northern Kunduz city late last month, the holy warriors have launched multiple offensives around the country, a development seen as a key test for overstretched Afghan forces.

Afghan troops were gearing up for a major offensive to retake the district of Ghormach in northern Faryab province.

As many as two dozen Afghan coppers including the district police chief were feared to be killed or captured after the Taliban on the weekend overran the district center close to the border with Turkmenistan, official said.

Sediqqi declined to give any details about the offensive.

Taliban front man Zabiullah Mujahid claimed on his Twitter account that holy warriors had detained the district police chief.

Afghanistan's first vice president Abdul Rashid Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
, a former warlord with no formal position in the military, arrived in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday to oversee anti-Taliban operations.

In the wake of recent Taliban gains, U.S. president Barak Obama last week announced a major policy reversal on Afghanistan that will see 5,500 U.S. troops remain in the country when he leaves office in January 2017 despite his earlier pledge to pull out next year.

Gaddafi supporters forced out of Atawailah district
Sabratha Military Council-led forces have taken full control of Al-Ajilat city and Atawailah district, chief of the council Taher Al-Gharabli confirmed today.

Heavy clashes against the Tribes Army erupted Tuesday when the army launched a surprise attack on Al-Ajilat to take the city.

The Tribes Army is now stationed in Al-Jumail city.

On Friday, Gaddafi loyalists met in Atawailah district and called for the return of ex-Jamahiriya system of Gaddafi. The meeting was organized and protected by the Tribes Army.

Fighting continues in Sabratha
[Libya Herald]. Clashes west of Tripoli in the Ajilat area between Libya Dawn forces, mainly from Sabratha, and local units linked to the Libyan National Army (LNA) continued intermittently during the day, according to an official from Sabratha Municipal Council, but had again subsided this evening.

There are reports that at least ten people, including civilians, have been killed since the clashes started on Saturday.

Sabratha Media Centre are claiming that pro-Dawn forces have now taken control of Ras Yusuf and west Ajilat, focus of much of the fighting in the past four days and viewed as strongly pro-Qaddafi regime. It also has published photos of what it claims are vehicles captured from LNA-supported forces. It says that in the past 24 hours, five fighters with those forces were killed, four Warshefanis and one from Taweela, while it lost one man. He has been named as Shaban Al Atrash, from Ajilat.

It further claims that the road from Sabratha to Zuwara is now open.

U.S. Offers Niger Surveillance Planes as Islamist Attacks Continue
[AnNahar] The United States offered Niger two military surveillance planes Wednesday as attacks by suspected Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
forces of Evil continued in the country's south-east region bordering Nigeria.

Two Niger soldiers were killed and several injured Wednesday in a foiled suicide kaboom by suspected Boko Haram fighters, Defense Minister Mahamadou Karidjo said.

Karidjo spoke as he took possession of two Cessna C-208 planes equipped with intelligence and reconnaissance systems, as well as around 30 military vehicles and ambulances. A U.S. official said the aid was worth around 32 million euros.

The aircraft "will enable Niger's armed forces to identify local threats and better secure the border," said U.S. Ambassador Eunice Reddick.

Wednesday's attack took place in the Diffa region, said private radio station Anfani, the scene of several such incidents since February, including one in June in which 38 people were killed.

"It's not tanks we need but intelligence to fight them," said Karidjo.

Niger is under threat from jihadist fighters along its northern borders with Mali and Libya, and from Boko Haram forces of Evil along its southeast border with Nigeria.

In October it struck a military cooperation deal with the United States that provides for U.S. training to Niger troops as part of a joint fight against terrorism.

Washington has a military base in Niger used by its drones to supply intelligence to French troops who launched an anti-Islamist operation in Mali in January 2013.

Niger, a vast arid country whose primary source of foreign income is uranium, has joined a regional military alliance alongside Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...

Arabia
Bahrain Accuses 24 of Forming IS Cell
[AnNahar] Bahrain on Wednesday charged 24 people with forming a cell of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, plotting suicide kabooms and recruiting fighters for the jihadist organization.

The move came after investigations into the formation of a "branch for a terrorist group... the so-called Daesh [Islamic State]," said a prosecution statement, using the Arabic acronym for IS.

Among the accused are 16 people who are still on the lam.

Their charges include "forming a branch for a terrorist group... joining it, possessing weapons and explosives for terrorist aims, in addition to promoting the overthrow of the regime," said public prosecutor Ahmed al-Hammadi.

One of the defendants is accused of recruiting two others into IS, and helping one of them to travel to Syria where he received military training by jihadists, the prosecutor said.

The pair were also tasked with recruiting others who joined IS abroad.

The group also "plotted suicide attacks by members in Bahrain against worship places, like the attacks by the terrorist group in neighboring countries," Hammadi said in an apparent reference to attacks on Shiite mosques in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...

Yemeni Forces Attack Saudi Posts
Yemeni forces have carried out retaliatory attacks against military bases Saudi Arabia has set up in Yemen’s central province of Ma’rib and similar targets on the Saudi soil.

According to local media reports on Wednesday, the Yemeni forces hit a Saudi base in Ma’rib, where at least 50 Saudi soldiers were killed.

The Yemeni army also attacked Saudi positions in the district of al-Khobe in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern border province of Jizan. Reports said five Saudi soldiers were killed in that strike.

A similar number of fatalities on the part of Saudi forces was also reported in the southwestern region of Asir in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, Saudi warplanes conducted seven airstrikes against various areas in the city of Sirwah, located about 120 kilometers (75 miles) east of the capital, Sana’a.

Saudi warplanes also launched three airstrikes against the Abs district of Yemen’s northwestern province of Hajjah, though no reports about possible casualties and the extent of damage caused were available.

Additionally, Saudi aircraft bombed the military camp for the Yemeni Army’s 117th Brigade in the town of Mukayras in the central province of Bayda.

Yemen has been under military strikes by Saudi Arabia on a daily basis since March 26. The strikes have been meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to Yemen’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

#1  Al-Manar (English: the beacon) is a Lebanese satellite television station affiliated with Hezbollah, broadcasting from Beirut, Lebanon.

Al-Manar was designated as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity," and banned by the United States on 17 December 2004. It has also been banned by France, Spain and Germany.

I would conclude that the information is less than reliable though the part about being pounded by Saudi Air seems to have struck a nerve.

Rebel rockets kill at least 22 civilians in Yemen
At least 22 civilians were killed and several others wounded as rockets allegedly fired by rebels crashed into the Yemeni city of Taez on Wednesday, medics and military officials said.

The Katyusha rockets hit areas in the centre of the city that is circled by Houthi rebels and allied forces loyal to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh, a military official said.

"Al-Mutahideen hospital has received 22 bodies of civilians," a medical source said.

#1  Russia-Iran axis of evil.

"The Katyusha was originally a World War II-era Soviet rocket. During the Great Patriotic War the BM-8 and BM-13 rocket launchers [some times confusingly called rocket mortars] got their famous name "Katyusha". In March 1941 the first successful fire tests of BM-13 rocket launchers were carried out and 21 June mass production order was sign. Originally this system was based on standard ZIS-5 but this experience wasn't successful. Afterwards ZIS-6 was chosen. At last the BM-13 was mounted only on Studebaker-US6 (BM-13N). The BM-13 could fire 16 130mm rockets simultaneously.

The Katyusha, or Little Kate, was a rocket launcher mounted on a heavy truck that fired volleys of up to 48 rockets nearly four miles. The Katyusha was infamous among German troopers who quickly learned to dread its distinctive scream. They named the Katyusha "Stalin's Organ." Soviet guards mortar units were equipped with multiple rocket launchers, the famous katyushas, named after the title of a popular song of the time. Some military scholars credit the Katyusha for the relief of Stalingrad.

References now to the Katyusha mean not just one type of rocket, but a whole range of different artillery rockets, whether from old Soviet or other-nation stock, most frequently the 122mm rocket. The Katyusha rockets have little guidance and are not lethal enough to defeat IsraelYemen militarily, but are used by terrorist groups such as Hezbollah, operating out of LebanonYemen, to cause terror among the IsraeliYemeni population."

Russia Says 20 Banned Islamists Held after Moscow Sweep
[AnNahar] Russian police said Tuesday they had detained 20 members of banned Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir

in Moscow, the latest arrests of alleged Islamists after the start of the Kremlin's bombing campaign in Syria.

"Around one hundred people suspected of illegal activities were checked over the past 24 hours and 20 of them were detained as members of Hizbut Tahrir," the interior ministry said.

Hizbut Tahrir (Party of Liberation) seeks to re-establish a caliphate -- a pan-Islamic state based on Islamic rule harking back to the medieval era -- and has been banned in Russia since 2003.

The group has been pursued with particular vigor in the Muslim but highly secular ex-Soviet Central Asian countries.

In Russia, the group has been active in the North Caucasus as well as in the mainly-Muslim Volga regions of Bashkortostan and Tatarstan.

Russian security services claim to have thwarted several planned attacks since September 30 when Moscow launched a bombing campaign in Syria targeting Islamic State

jihadists and other "terrorist" groups.

Russia -- which has fought its own Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus -- says some 2,000 of its citizens are fighting with IS.

Earlier this month, Russia's FSB security service said it had detained a group of people, some of whom had trained with IS, in Moscow and seized bomb materials they were planning to use to attack the capital's busy transport system.

[Rudaw] Turkish security officials are expecting a fresh influx of 50,000 refugees from neighboring Syria, as Russian jets pound the city of Aleppo and many residents prepare to flee.

group (ISIS). Syrian government troops have also begun a land operation near the city, which is expected to cause more locals to flee.

"Turkish security sources said they expected the number of refugees leaving Aleppo to increase to 350,000 by the weekend if the Arclight Arclight airstrikes continue, with a number of these people being expected to reach The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

's border," Hurriyet said.

It quoted Syrian Turkmen Council President Abdurrahman Mustafa confirming that 50,000 people have left the city and are heading to Turkey.

"A major migration has started from the south of Aleppo. Turkmens are in the rural and northern part of the city. The migration will be larger when the regime forces reach here," the daily quoted Mustafa as saying.

The Syrian army, reportedly backed by Leb's Shiite Hezbollah movement and Iran's elite Quds force, has made small gains since launching ground assaults in Aleppo, Hama, Homs and Latakia over the past two weeks.

Official: Peshmerga to take part in battle for Mosul
[Rudaw] A high-ranking Peshmerga official declared Wednesday that the Peshmerga will take part in an anticipated battle for djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
"Mosul is the heart of ISIS and it must be taken out," Jabar Yawar, the chief of staff of the Peshmerga ministry, told Rudaw, saying that the Peshmerga are ready to fight alongside the coalition to push ISIS out of Mosul.

Yawar claimed that "the Kurdistan region has shown its willingness and will participate in the battle for Mosul."

"The liberation of Mosul will have a significant impact for the security of Kurdistan and is also in the interest of the whole Iraq," he continued.

Without Baghdad, the Kurdistan region will not unilaterally wage war against ISIS in Mosul, therefore "the Kurdistan region will have an agreement with Baghdad on how to launch the assault, and the Peshmerga will coordinate the details of military plans alongside the US-led coalition, tribal bandidos turbans and Iraqi joint forces," Yawar explained.

He also rejected claims that the Peshmerga will join the battle for Hawija.

"We have no plan to fight ISIS in Hawija, because they are far away from our borders and we have no mutual interests with any party to take part in possible attacks on ISIS in Hawija," he concluded.

The Iraqi troops were "consolidating and reorganizing their forces in preparation for continued offensive operations," he said.

In one unsuccessful counterattack, ISIS forces of Evil tried to use several boom-mobiles against Iraqi forces, but the Iraqis fought them off.

Local troops are being aided by US-led coalition planes, which Warren said have conducted 21 strikes in the past week around Ramadi.

Ramadi, the capital of the western province of Anbar, was captured by ISIS in May this year.

Warren also noted that Iraqi forces had regained most of the Baiji oil refinery, though "small pockets of enemy resistance" remained.

If you followed the news coming out of there, you really wouldn't be asking that question.

I think the sunnis see their enemy as shias not isis imo.

Again, if you followed the news coming out of there, the Sunni conclusion might be that IS is the lesser of the two evils, but it's not an enthusiastic preference.

After Holocaust remark, White House warns Netanyahu against incitement
Comments made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier in the week, which implicated the former grand mufti of Jerusalem in the decision to proceed with the Holocaust, amount to inflammatory rhetoric stoking tensions on the ground between Israel and the Palestinians, the White House said on Thursday.

#6  As I have explained yesterday, I think Netanyahu's remarks are problematic.

This is not about the mufti, who certainly was an ardent supporter of the Holocaust, and had Rommel made it to Palestine (after a vistory at El Alamein, this was a real threat), his men would have gladly done the dirty work for the Germans.

But to claim that he "convinced" Hitler, who at that time "only" wanted to deport the Jews, not wipe them out, to chose extermination is simply wrong historically.

The Jewish communities here in Germany are quite taken aback by that statement.

    Roadblocks removed in East Jerusalem
[Ynet] Security assessemnts lead police to remove roadblocks and checkpoints from certain neighborhoods; everywhere 'quiet is returned, barriers will be removed.'

Police began Wednesday to remove roadblocks in East Jerusalem neighborhoods where relative quiet has returned in recent days. Neighborhoods where riots continue and attackers originate from will retain their barriers.

Since a closure was announced on East Jerusalem last week there has been a decrease in the amount of attackers coming to the west side of the city, but The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) claims that the closure is collective punishment.

Wednesday afternoon barriers were removed from the neighborhoods of Wadi Joz and Sheikh Jarrah. These checkpoints were erected last week in the wake of the security cabinet's decision allowing police to impose closures on the exits of neighborhoods according to operational needs.

"In light of the quiet that has returned the roadblocks have been removed," Jerusalem police said. "We call on local leadership to demonstrate responsibility and leadership. Everywhere leadership is shown and quiet is returned -- barriers will be removed."

Police checkpoints are still deployed in neighborhoods such as Jabel Mukaber, Sur Baher and Isawiya, which, according to security assessments, have not yet calmed down and where there remains an operational necessity for them.

Acting Chief of Police Commander Benzi Sau said in a press briefing that he does not "use the term closure. Our mission is to secure the country's citizens. We want to create security circles that eventually will stop those who pose a threat to the citizens in the city center."

    However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
Sau stressed that it was too early to tell if the decrease in violence in Jerusalem in the last week is the result of the security measures taken.

Ynet summarizes the day's events in Israel
Note that events are presented in reverse chronological order, from latest to earliest.
5 Israelis maimed in violence Wednesday as 2 attackers rubbed out, 1 critically maimed; 15 year old armed with knife shot, maimed byIDF fire near Yitzhar.

A Jewish man, who security forces mistook for a nationalistically motivated attacker, was shot and killed in central Jerusalem late Wednesday night, concluding a day of continued violence - mostly in the West Bank.

The individual was identified as Jewish by the identification card he carried. Those who shot him claimed they were attacked and that he attempted to grab one of their weapons during a escalating verbal dispute.

Earlier in the day, an Israeli female combat soldier in the IDF was stabbed in the neck and critically maimed near Binyamin, not far from Jerusalem, by one attacker. Another female soldier shot one attacker dead and apprehended another individual who was later cleared of suspicion and released from police custody.

The surrounding area was closed off for fears that the terrorist's body was booby-trapped with explosives.

A preliminary investigation revealed that after one terrorist stabbed the critically maimed victim, he ran towards the soldier, still brandishing the knife, and she managed to shoot him from short range before he had the chance to stab her as well.

In a separate incident Wednesday evening, four IDF troops were maimed in a vehicular attack in Beit Umar, a West Bank town north of Hebron.

One was in moderately-serious condition while the rest were lightly maimed. The attacker was shot and critically maimed at the scene.

Hours earlier, in the morning, a 15-year-old Paleostinian girl armed with a knife was shot by IDF forces as she tried to enter Yitzhar, a settlement near Nablus.

The troops provided medical assistance to the maimed would-be attacker.

The troops were called to the scene after the IDF received reports of a suspicious individual. During the incident, the local auxiliary force was deployed and residents were instructed to stay in their homes.

Samaria Regional Council Chairman Yossi Dagan described the incident as an escalation. "It has been a long time since there have been infiltrations of this type in Samaria communities," he noted.

The West Bank saw four separate attacks on Tuesday in which a soldier was killed and three others -- two soldiers and a civilian -- were maimed.

    Southeast Asia
Maoist militants brutally slay Mindanao mayor and son
[CNN] Slain mayor Dario Otaza was a former militant who gave up armed struggle and decided to make reforms through government by peaceful means. Mayor Otaza consistently advocated against armed rebellion. He was considered a role model by his fellow local chief executives for his efforts and initiatives for the development projects in the town of Loreto.

Otaza had urged his former comrades in the New People's Army to surrender and avail themselves of the livelihood program initiated by the government. Over his term, he welcomed 154 NPA militants back to the government side. That the NPA saw Otaza a threat who must be stopped was well known. But what the military could not comprehend is why Otaza's 20-year-old, mentally-challenged son Daryl was also hogtied and killed by the miltiants.

Capt. Joe Patrick Martinez confirmed that Mayor Otaza received death threats in the past before the abduction on October 19. The victims were seized by 18 NPA miltants disguised as National Bureau of Investigation agents.

Hours later, pursuing military troops discovered the bodies of the two victims in Butuan City, both hogtied and shot several times.

Nine bombs injure four in southern Thailand
[The Nation] Two small bombs exploded Wednesday morning in Pattani's Khok Pho district after the previous night's bomb attacks at seven different locations and the detection of suspicious items at several areas in the district. Wednesday's bomb attacks caused no casualties.

One blast took place Wednesday in front of a policeman's house, another one occurred in front of a garage. An explosive disposal team also destroyed suspicious items at four locations Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday night, seven small home-made bombs were detonated in Khok Pho district, causing slight injuries to four people.

Meanwhile, assistant police chief Pol Maj-General Suchat Theerasawat yesterday visited Narathiwat's Tak Bai district to check on progress in the police probe into Tuesday's bombing that killed defense volunteer Ismaae Jihamart. The attack is believed to have been carried out by militant suspect Mahamaming Mama as revenge for a clash that happened exactly three years ago and led to the death of his younger brother Abdulrohim Mama.

    Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russian Military Says Struck 83 Targets in Syria over Past 24 Hours
[AnNahar] Russian jets hit 83 targets in Syria over the past 24 hours, Russia's military said Wednesday, ramping up its bombing campaign as Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
    Supressor of the Damascenes...
made a surprise visit to Moscow.

"Russian planes in Syria over the past day carried out 46 sorties against 83 infrastructure targets of terrorist groups in the provinces of Hama, Idlib, Damascus, Aleppo and Deir Ezzor," the defense ministry said in a statement.

The one-day tally of targets hit is one of the highest since Moscow began its air campaign in Syria on September 30 to support Assad's forces.

Russia's military said that it destroyed a bomb-making factory belonging to al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
in the area around the second city of Aleppo, where government forces have renewed a ground offensive.

Russia said it also hit a major al-Nusra field camp in the Hama region and an Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group command post in Idlib province.

Russia insists it is targeting IS and other "terrorist" groups but the U.S. and its allies -- involved in a rival coalition bombing IS -- say Moscow is hitting other factions fighting Assad.

The uptick in strikes came as Syrian leader Assad made an unannounced visit to Moscow to meet Putin on Tuesday, his first known foreign trip since the conflict broke out in his country in 2011.
