[DAWN] Suspected hard boyz killed at least 54 people when they detonated bombs in crowded places Sunday night in Maiduguri, the capital of the Borno state in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, members of a civilian defense group said on Monday.

Around 43 people died in an attack on a mosque while 11 were killed in an attack on a market center, said the civilian defense force members, who insisted anonymity for fear of reprisals from the Nigerian military which has been deployed to guard civilians in the town.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
locals in the city said at least 85 people were killed in the series of bombings disputing a lower figure of 54 given by police.

"I can assure you that no fewer than 85 people died," said resident Sabo Ahmed. "The figure given by the police is just the number of people taken to hospital.

The Borno state police said earlier that 54 people had died in Sunday night's kabooms, which destroyed the Aljari Cross and Gomari areas of the city.

There were four kabooms in the attacks; one in a mosque after evening prayers, another at a marketplace and two homemade explosives were thrown into a business center where people charge their phones and play video games, said a member of the civilian militia.

The blasts occurred within 20 minutes, he said.

The Grand Turk
Turkish Strikes Kill 5 Kurdish Rebels, Destroy Arms Stores
[AnNahar] Turkish war planes pounded murderous Moslem Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) positions in the southeast during a raid, killing five suspected PKK members, the army said Monday.

F-16 fighter jets destroyed fuel and ammunition depots in the remote Hakkari province, on the border with Iraq, the general staff said in a statement on its website.

"Five gunnies have been neutralized," the army added.

The sortie was the second in under a week, coming five days after the air force strafed PKK targets across the border in the mountains of northern Iraq, in an operation that killed at least 55 murderous Moslems, according to the military.

Elsewhere, one member of the pro-government "Village Guard" militia was killed in an attack blamed on the PKK in the Silopi district of the southeastern province of Sirnak on Monday, the state-run Anatolia news agency said.

The attack came after the government on Saturday announced plans to boost the controversial Kurdish militia by 5,000 members in the run-up to November 1 parliamentary elections.

Ankara launched a major "anti-terrorist" campaign against the PKK in late July, aimed at flushing it out of its strongholds in southeastern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and northern Iraq.

The group has hit back hard, killing dozens of police and soldiers in almost daily bomb and shooting attacks.

Around 150 soldiers and police have been killed since the return to open conflict, compared with over a thousand rebels, according to pro-government media.

The escalation has shattered a two-year-ceasefire which had raised hopes of an end to the PKK's three-decade insurgency, in which over 40,000 people have been killed.
An interesting presentation of the order of events, very different than we've seen elsewhere.

Turkish police raid Gulen-linked schools in Ankara
[Hurriyet Daily News] Police forces have raided four schools in the capital city of Ankara with alleged linked to the Justice and Development Party's (AKP) ally-turned-foe, U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen.

Anti-terror units from the Ankara Police Department searched four schools on charges of being connected with "the parallel state structure," and one person who resisted the search was taken into custody on Sept. 21, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. A "parallel structure" within the state is said to have been established by Gulen's followers, known as Gulenists, who have been charged with wiretapping hundreds of thousands of state officials through operations by members employed in the judiciary and police.

Upon an order by the Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office in relation with an ongoing investigation into the "Fethullahist Terror Organization" (FETÖ), the police forces launched simultaneous raids into Private Samanyolu Education Institutions, the Private Atlantik Ahmet Ulusoy campus, Private Nurettin Topcu Primary Education Institutions and Atlantik Education Institutions, the Anadolu Agency said. Various documents, computers and hard discs were seized during the raids.

Last week, prosecutors asked for a prison sentence of up to 34 years for Gulen, accusing him of terrorism for allegedly conspiring against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Istanbul police arrest militant who entered courthouse in police uniform
[Hurriyet Daily News] An outlawed Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) member has been tossed in the clink

after he was seen entering a courthouse in Istanbul's Asian side while wearing a police uniform.

The man identified as Cemil K., was arrested on Sept. 20 when Istanbul Police Department Counterterrorism Unit officers detained him upon intelligence that the outlawed organization was readying for armed attacks on courthouses.

He was detained in a police operation in the Gebze district of the northwestern province of Kocaeli on Sept. 18 after coppers detected him on closed-circuit television (CCTV) at the Anadolu Courthouse in Istanbul's Kartal district over intelligence, with Cemil K. seen entering the courthouse on Sept. 16.

CCTV footage showed Cemil K. walking inside the courthouse disguised as a police officer and leaving the building in a taxi.

The police studied the CCTVs at the courthouse, and also street camera recordings for the duration of his taxi ride.

A debate was sparked over courthouse security after two gunnies from the DHKP-C took Istanbul prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz hostage at a courthouse in Istanbul's Caglayan neighborhood on Mar. 31. The hours-long hostage drama left Kiraz and the two gunnies dead.

Security measures had been heightened at the time, and security personnel at courthouses began searching lawyers, judges and prosecutors with x-ray devices and metal detectors, a practice that was rejected by judicial personnel.

Palestinian youth killed in West Bank explosion
[Times of Israel] Israeli troops find teen's body while on patrol near Hebron. Army checking whether grenade detonated in his hands

A Paleostinian youth was killed in the West Bank near Hebron Monday night in an incident whose circumstances were not immediately clear.

According to initial media reports, IDF troops arrived at a road in the South Hebron Hills to investigate reports that rocks had been placed on the motorway, blocking it. The patrol then heard an kaboom nearby and soon found the youth's body.

Officials told Walla news they were checking whether the teenager had attempted to hurl a grenade or other explosive at the soldiers when it detonated in his hands. Walla further reported that a large contingent of security forces was sent to the scene of the incident to help investigate and prevent any riots or disorder. The incident came following days of unrest in Jerusalem's Temple Mount which have raised tensions in the region.

Israel said Monday thousands of police would be deployed in the capital ahead of the Yom Kippur and Eid al-Adha holidays.

Authorities also said 66 people had been jugged

in Jerusalem over the past week, including some detained in connection with the unrest at al-Aqsa Mosque, which saw Israeli police clash with rioters.

Yom Kippur begins on Tuesday night and lasts until Wednesday evening, with thousands of Jews expected to visit the Western Wall below the Temple Mount in Jerusalem's Old City, called Haram al-Sharif or the al-Aqsa compound by Moslems.

The Moslem Eid al-Adha holiday begins on Wednesday evening and continues until Sunday.

Last week's festivities occurred during the Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashanah.

Third Palestinian Intifada Looms as Israeli Attacks Continue
[ALMANAR.LB] Sheikh Raed Salah, leader of the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Occupied Paleostine, expected the outbreak of a 3rd Intifada (Paleostinian uprising) in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem if things remain as they are.

"If the Israeli violations continue against Al-Aqsa Mosque, that might lead to a 3rd Intifada in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem," Salah said in an interview with the Turkish Anadolu Agency.

He warned that the Zionist entity is working on the Spatial and Temporal division of Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to deliberate plans.
Of course only God himself can work on the non-spatiotemporal division of the mosque, but the Kingdom of Jordan is responsible for the physical fabric of the thing, not Israel. Israel only refuses to allow the mosque being used as a fort and weapons storage.
"The response on the Arabic and Islamic level lies in putting pressure on the Israeli occupation to stop its arbitrary actions against Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem," Salah said. "We will keep knocking on all doors, to raise the voice of Jerusalem."

Since last Sunday, Zionist occupation forces stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque almost daily and attacked Moslem worshipers with rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades, causing dozens of injuries.
"Let's define Moslem worship as using iron bars, molotov cocktails, and bottle rockets to attack Jews, and see how much fun we can have in Allah's name!"
Salah also welcomed the position of Jordan, which condemned what happened in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa, urging it to "take action beyond condemnation and denunciation."

According to international law, Jordan is the official supervisor of Al-Waqf in East Jerusalem because it was the last local authority that oversaw the holy sites before the 1967 Zionist occupation.
And a dreadful job they're doing, to be sure. Though it's not actually an international law thing so much as Israel doesn't want the trouble of being officially in charge of it and them.
Salah said that "the Zionist government took advantage of the current events in the Arab world, especially in Syria, Iraq, Libya, Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and Egypt, which keep them busy" and less focused on Paleostine.

He also praised the positions of some Arab and Islamic countries who condemned the Zionist aggressions on Al-Aqsa.
Lots of hot words and attitudinizing signifying, as usual, nothing.
Salah is considered one of the prominent Islamic figures in Paleostine who opposed the Zionist settlement policies and what Paleostinians call the "Judaization" of East Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Salah paid a high price for his criticism of the Zionist occupation and has been tossed in the clink
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
and prosecuted. That is why Paleostinians call him "Sheikh Al-Aqsa".
Are we sure that's said admiringly?

#1  Will someone EXPLAIN to me WHY the US is so "concerned" that Russia and Putin are sending military assets to Syria in a last ditch effort to get Assad to pay his enormous ( not to say humongous ) DEBTS which he OWES Russia for all the supplies and goodies Russia has formerly invested in Syria and will never see a Kopek of unless Assad coughs up a lot of Rubles ? Putin wants to be PAID.

And how is it in the US interest to prevent Russia from becoming involved in an "adventure" that is one big can of worms? Its Russian money, Russian time and Russian body parts in those helicopters and attack aircraft, not ours.
Where is Russia going to GO while it is petting a big smelly burning dog? And we can just watch, since everybody knows the Obama US will never stop Assad OR Russia with anything even Obama's Mother was at risk. He's just NOT that kind of guy ( and you know what his mother was like ).
I DO hope I have not offended anyone on Rantburg with my opinions of Obama's mother.

While the US was selling ammunition ( 400 million $$) during the Bangla Desh war so the Moslems could kill 3million civilian Hindus ( in just 8 months). And we sent a Carrier etc into the Bay of Bengal to intimidate the Hindus who were desperate enough to accept the Russian 1938 largesse in obsolete weapons which rattled like boxes of cereal. DON'T play with the nasty Russians we told them ( we told them) even if WE are not going to help you defend yourselves.

NOW Russia is helping Assad who has to win to PAY UP. And its THEIR ass and not ours. Let them pet the burning dog. The US isn't going to do a damn thing and the Russians recognize a total wimp when he bends over and does a deep bow.

Russia starts Syria drone surveillance missions: U.S. officials
[Rooters] Russia has started flying drone aircraft on surveillance missions in Syria, U.S. officials said on Monday, in what appeared to be Moscow's first military air operations there since staging a rapid buildup at a Syrian air base.

The beginning of Russian drone flights underscored the risks of U.S.-led coalition planes and Russian aircraft operating within Syria's limited airspace, without agreeing on coordination or objectives in Syria's civil war.

The former Cold War foes have a common adversary in Islamic State militants in Syria. But Washington opposes Moscow's support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, seeing him as a driving force in the four-and-a-half year-long civil war.

The Pentagon declined comment at a news briefing when asked about the Reuters report on Russian drones, saying it could not discuss intelligence matters. But it said the U.S. Department of Defense was "keenly aware" of what was happening on the ground in Syria.

The White House acknowledged that Moscow's intentions were unclear and that the prospect of deepening Russian military backing for Assad was troubling.
