Arabia
United Arab Emirates, Bahrain lose 45 troops on black day for Yemen coalition
[ABC.NET.AU] The United Arab Emirates says 45 of its soldiers engaged in a Saudi-led campaign against Iranian catspaws in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
have been killed in an accidental kaboom that the bandidos murderous Moslems claimed was caused by rocket fire.

In what was the deadliest day for the coalition since it was formed in March, Bahrain said five of its soldiers guarding the Saudi border with Yemen were also killed.

The Yemeni government said an "accidental kaboom" at an arms depot at a military base in the eastern province of Marib killed the Emiratis, but the rebels said their fighters fired a rocket that caused the blast.

Coalition ally Bahrain said five of its soldiers were killed in southern Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
where they had been posted to help defend the border with war-wracked Yemen. It did not give a precise location.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
Yemen's exiled presidency said the Bahrainis died in the same blast that killed the Emiratis.

Abu Dhabi crown prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, head of the UAE armed forces, underlined in a tweet his country's "determination" to continue supporting the Yemenis against "injustice and aggression".

Bangladesh
'Trained Assassin' Kills Two at Bangladesh Shrine
[AnNahar] Two men were slaughtered inside an Islamic Sufi shrine in the Bangladesh port city of Chittagong on Friday in an attack police said was carried out by a "trained and unknown assassin."

The murderer escaped after slitting the throats of the shrine's head custodian and his assistant in the neighborhood of Bayezid Bostami, Chittagong police commissioner Abdul Jalil Mondal told AFP.

The attack took place just after the end of Moslems' Friday prayer, when the usually crowded Lengta Fokirer Majar shrine is comparatively quiet.

"The killer's professionalism showed that he was trained for such activities," Mondal said, adding that the murderer detonated two handmade bombs near the shrine's entrance to create a diversion.

Police raised the possibility that Islamist bully boys, who have carried out several attacks on shrines and their guards in the past decade, could be behind the assault.

"It might be one of those Islamist bully boy groups who think shrines conduct unholy practices and spread misconceptions of Islam," a local police official told AFP, requesting anonymity.

Millions of Bangladeshis worship at shrines, but Lions of Islam consider Sufis -- followers of a mystical form of Islam -- and other shrine-goers as heretics and grave worshipers.

Local police chief Prodip Kumar Das said his team was "working to find clues to the murders".

The banned Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh was one of several Islamist groups behind a series of attacks on sacred shrines and other places belonging to the Sufi and Ahmadia sects between 2002 and 2004.

A grenade attack in 2004 on the then British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Anwar Choudhury, inside a famous shrine in the northeastern city of Sylhet killed three and left the diplomat maimed.

(IraqiNews.com) Baghdad – The Greek authorities announced that the Coast Guard had captured a cargo ship loaded with weapons and explosives suspected of being sent to ISIS.

The news agency “Associated Press” quoted the Greek authorities as saying, “we captured a cargo ship loaded with weapons and explosives near the island of Crete; it was taken to a nearby port for research and investigation.”

According to “Associated Press,” “the Greek authorities did not give any information about the type and quantity of weapons on board and did not reveal the identity of the ship and its crew.”

Greek local media said that “the shipment was sent by terrorists linked with ISIS in Libya on its way to Iraq and Syria.

#1  I believe this is a deliberately bland government version of an earlier article this week. If so, it "had been suggested" that the ship had departed from a port in Turkey and it was a Bolivian-flagged ship with a crew of Syrians and Egyptians.

Turkey arrests suspects smuggling migrants, including dead boy
[Rudaw] ERBIL, Kurdistan Region -- Turkish police have locked away
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
14 people suspected of smuggling migrants to Greece, including the family of Aylan Kurdi, the Syrian Kurdish three-year-old who drowned on Wednesday.

The Turkish government said the suspects were involved in the death of the little boy, who died together with a brother who was a year older, their 27-year-old mother and nine other people, local media reports said.

News agency pictures of Aylan's body, seen across the world, evoked widespread shock, bringing home the tragedy of the Syrian war and the thousands of refugees who have been risking lives daily this summer to get from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
to the Greek island of Kos.

Meanwhile Sezgin Tanrikulu, a Turkish MP from the Republican People's Party (CHP), urged parliament to take immediate action against people smugglers, especially those behind the deaths of Aylan and his family.

"Who is responsible for the heartbreaking incidents occurring across Turkey," said Tanrikulu, demanding an answer on Thursday from Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

Turkish media reports said that the boat carrying Aylan, his family and other refugees had sunk just a few minutes after leaving the coastal city of Mugla in southwestern Turkey, and was discovered by Turkish patrol boat on Wednesday.

Aylan's death sparked widespread condemnation and a previously unseen outpouring of emotions from world leaders.

Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani issued a statement Thursday condoling the death of the little boy from the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobani.

"The image of the drowned Kurdish child from Kobani is another symbol of the tyrannized Kurdish people in the world," Barzani said, urging European countries not to discriminate against Kurdish immigrants.

Karachi seminaries' swoop: Jihadi literature seized from madressah
[DAWN] In the first search operation since the identification of 49 madressahs suspected to have links with 'terrorist organizations' in Sindh, police seized Jihadi literature and posters belonging to a banned bad boy organization from the hostel of one of the seminaries, it emerged on Thursday.

The law enforcers conducted a search of three madressahs in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
's West district and one in East district and jugged

one person in possession of the Jihadi literature inside the seminary.

"We searched Jamia Binoria in SITE, Masjid and Madressah Al-Badar in Qasba Colony and Masjid and Madressah Al-Mustafa in Orangi Town," SSP west Azfar Mahesar told Dawn. The police also searched Madressah Jamia Farooqia in Shah Faisal Colony.

"During the search of the Madressah Al-Mustafa hostel, we seized some Jihadi literature found in one of its rooms. There were also some posters and stuff of the banned
...the word banned seems to have a different meaning in Pakistain than it does in most other places. Or maybe it simply lacks any meaning at all...
organization
. All those were seized," the officer said, adding that the exercise largely remained smooth with the cooperation of the administration of each madressah.

The SSP said the police investigated and identified the student who had actually carried the literature into the room. After verification and thorough counterchecks, it was proved that the literature belonged to that student, he said, claiming that the police took him into their custody.

"It's basically Jihadi literature, not the kind that triggers sectarian hatred," said SSP Mahesar, adding that investigation was under way to find any possible "links of the presence of the literature inside the madressah with its administration or other students".

The police booked and arrested the student under Section 153-A of the Pakistain Penal Code. Titled "promoting enmity between different groups," Section 153-A of the PPC reads: "Whoever by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representations or otherwise, promotes or incites, or attempts to promote or incite, on grounds of religion, race, place of both, residence, language, caste or community or any other ground whatsoever, disharmony or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different religious, racial, language or regional groups or castes or communities."

The Sindh home department had identified 49 madressahs having alleged links with 'terrorist organizations' against whom the 'relevant authorities' were told to take action last month. The madressahs were identified on intelligence reports.

The officials claimed to have shared the information with both the Rangers and Sindh police for 'appropriate action' against them. However, the Pakistain Rangers, which were leading the 'targeted operation' in Karachi, were not part of the search operation of the madressahs.

Iraq
Iraq Soldier Killed in Search for Turk Abduction Suspect
[AnNahar] Iraqi soldier was killed in festivities with gunnies as security forces searched for a suspect behind the kidnappings of 18 Turkish workers, the military said Friday.

The Turkish employees of construction company Nurol Insaat were seized Wednesday in the Sadr City area of north Baghdad, where they were working on a football stadium project.

Intelligence information had located "one of the members of the gang that carried out the kidnappings" in Baghdad's Paleostine Street, the security command responsible for the capital said.

"Forces moved to search and inspect in Paleostine Street, but were fired on by gunnies who tried to intercept them, resulting in the martyrdom of a soldier and the wounding of three others," it said of the overnight operation.

It did not identify the gunnies, but Al-Etejah television station, which is affiliated with Ketaeb Hezbollah, said one of the Shiite militia's facilities had come under attack.

A Ketaeb Hezbollah source was quoted as saying the Baghdad Operations Command had targeted a Ketaeb Hezbollah headquarters in a raid on Paleostine Street.

jihadist group has kidnapped dozens of Turks in northern Iraq over the past 18 months and later released them, but the latest abductions took place in Sadr City, a stronghold of Shiite paramilitary forces.

Baghdad turned to mostly Shiite volunteer forces for support as IS advanced towards the capital in June last year, and they have played a key role in halting and then reversing the jihadists' gains.

But in doing so, the Iraqi government empowered Shiite militias, some with chequered human rights

records, and spurred the creation of new ones, allowing them to act with near-impunity despite them officially falling under government command.

Some fighters linked to the militias stand accused of criminal activities, including kidnappings as well as property seizures and murders.

Kidnappings for ransom are a persistent problem in Baghdad, although political motives are also possible.

Ankara has been accused of complacency towards IS and complicity in assisting the jihadist group, which also holds substantial territory in common neighbour Syria.

Syria Car Bomb Kills Key Anti-Regime Druze Cleric
[AnNahar] A prominent Druze holy man known for criticizing Syria's regime and Islamist bandidos gunnies was assassinated in a car kaboom outside the southern city of Sweida Friday, a monitoring group said.

"Sheikh Wahid al-Balous was killed in a car kaboom as he was driving on the outskirts of Sweida city," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Abdel Rahman said a second boom-mobile struck near the hospital in the Dahr al-Jabal neighborhood where the maimed were being taken, and that eight people were killed altogether.

Syria's official news agency SANA also said eight people had been killed and 22 maimed.

Sweida is the heartland of Syria's Druze minority, which made up around three percent of the country's pre-war population of 23 million.

"Balous was the leader of the Sheikhs of Dignity group, which aimed to protect the Druze areas in Syria," said Malek Abu Kheir, a journalist from Sweida who knew him.

The Sheikhs of Dignity the most powerful militia in the area and had fought fierce battles against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. jihadist group and al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate.

Balous opposed army conscripts from Sweida being sent outside the province, and often spoke out against both jihadist groups and the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
, Abu Kheir told AFP.

Days before Balous' murder, Sweida residents had gathered in the city to demand more regular government services, including electricity and water.

Activists told AFP the protesters had the support of Balous.

... Druze politician, head of the Progressive Socialist Party, who's been on every side in Leb at least four times. He'll sell you his friends for a dollar, but family comes higher because of shipping and handling...
, in a condolence statement he posted on Twitter, accused the Assad government of killing Balous.

"My condolences to Sheikh Wahid al-Balous and his lover companions, who were assassinated by the regime of Bashir al-Assad," he said.

But the chief of Syria's Druze, Sheikh Youssef Jarboua, accused "the enemies of the nation and humanitarian state."

Syrian Information Minister Omran Zohbi said the "terrorism that struck Sweida wants to send a message to its people, that because they stood by their nation, they will pay the price of this stance with blood."

According to SANA, parliament condemned "the two terrorist kabooms in Sweida."

"These cowardly terrorist acts will not discourage the Syrian people from continuing their fight against terrorism, but will instead strengthen their perseverance," the parliament statement said.

Neither Zohbi nor the parliamentary statement mentioned Balous.

The Druze community has been somewhat divided during the war, with some members fighting on the government side and others expressing sympathy for the opposition.

Thousands of Druze men have evaded military service in the army's dwindling ranks and have mostly taken up arms only in defense of their own areas.

In Sweida, Druze have formed a local militia to protect themselves from the rebels, residents say.

Russian troops 'fighting alongside Assad's army against Syrian rebels'
Russian troops are fighting alongside pro-Assad forces in Syria, state television in Damascus and several reports have claimed.

The video footage claimed to show troops and a Russian armoured vehicle fighting Syrian rebels alongside President Bashar al-Assad's troops in Latakia. It is reportedly possible to hear Russian being spoken by the troops in the footage.

In further indications of Russian "mission creep" in Syria, a Twitter account linked to Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qaeda's Syrian branch, published images of what appeared to be Russian planes and drones flying over Idlib.

While Russian military advisers are thought to have been in Syria for months, as the Kremlin tries to support its key Middle East ally, if confirmed, this would mark the first evidence of troops fighting on the front line.

It is possible the Russians in the state television clip could have been contractors, thereby putting some distance between themselves and the Kremlin.

An unnamed activist with the Syrian rebel group the Free Syrian Army told The Times: “The Russians have been there a long time. There are more Russian officials who came to Slunfeh in recent weeks. We don’t know how many but I can assure you there has been Russian reinforcement.”

Well, we both are fighting some of the same guys, at least on alternate Tuesdays and Thursdays. And maybe depending which side of some rather fluid borders the baddies are on.

IMHO, it's all about having a port on the Med. Remember that business in Crimea? Same sort of thing - access. Plus Syria has been a long-time Soviet client. Burning them would be bad marketing.
