Roslindale MA: Knife vs guns 0 and 1
[BostonGlobe] A man being followed by the Joint Terrorism Task Force was shot and fatally wounded by a Boston police officer and an FBI agent Tuesday when he approached them with a "military-style'' knife and refused to back down, officials said.

"Our officers tried their best to get him to put down the knife,'' said Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans. "Unfortunately, they had to take a life.''

The man's name was not released, and authorities would not disclose why the terrorism task force was following him. The man was in his mid 20s and was of Middle Eastern descent, said Boston Police Lieutenant Detective Michael McCarthy, a department spokesman.
Somehow I doubt the lieutenant is himself of Middle Eastern descent. Is he a racis?

Since heard they arrested someone else.

Curiouser and curiouser.

25 Taliban Insurgents Killed in Kandahar Airstrike
[Tolo News] At least 25 Taliban holy warriors were killed and 45 others injured in a military Arclight airstrike in southern Kandahar province on Sunday afternoon, Provincial Media Office said in a statement on Monday.

The Arclight airstrike took place in Ghorak district of the province after the air force targeted Taliban holy warriors who were gathered in the area, the statement said.

After the Arclight airstrike, the police forces launched a clearing operation in which two coppers were also injured during festivities with bad boys, the local officials said.

The police seized some small and heavy weapons during the operation, according to officials.

There were no civilians casualties during the operation and Arclight airstrike, the officials added.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
the Taliban have not yet commented on the Arclight airstrike.

Ghorak is known to be an insecure area that is plagued by bad boy attacks, said officials.

Afghanistan: Daesh versus Taliban
Much more, please.
[AA.TR] The Afghan Taliban holy warrior group has given Daesh a blow in the western province of Farah after days of heavy fighting which left tens of forces of Evil of both sides dead or maimed, Afghan officials said on Monday.

According to Farah province`s front man for the Afghan National Army, Mohammad Haneef Rezaee, the heavy fighting broke out between Talibs andDaesh fighters after the later insisted that Taliban elements declare their allegiance to His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
, the Iraqi leader of Daesh.

On May 29, Daesh operatives had to retreat from Khak Safid district to mountains of Anar Dara district after festivities with local Taliban which left 27 dead including 15 Daesh elements and 12 Talibs.

"On Saturday afternoon, Talibs launched a coordinated attack on Daesh forces in order to retrieve their lost territories in Anar Dara district," Rezaee told Anadolu Agency. "Heavy losses were inflicted on both sides".

At least 15 Daesh fighters including their commander, Sayed Mohammad Hussaini, were killed while 12 others were maimed.

The fighting ended on Sunday evening after Talibs captured another Daesh commander, Abdul Razaq Mehdi, along with 11 other fighters in the northern part of Anar Dara district, which shares a border with Iran.

"Abdul Razaq Mehdi, a Daesh logistician [...] was known as backbone of Daesh movement in western Afghanistan," Rezaee added. "At least 41 Daesh fighters surrendered to the Taliban while some others have escaped to neighboring districts,".

"Based on our intelligence reports, at least five Talibs were also killed during the clash and nine others were maimed," he said.

On Saturday, the Afghan air force conducted several raids on hideouts of Taliban and Daesh gunnies in Farah killing at least 16, according to observers.

The Afghan military`s ground forces were not involved in the battle. "We avoided involvement in the clash. Our participation would unite them rather than weaken them," Rezaee Said

province to the east and Iran to the west. Daesh established a military training camp in Khak Safid district of the province last year.

"The time has come to take advantage of the fighting between the Taliban and Daesh," retired army officer, Gen. Mohammad Ali told Anadolu Agency. "The Afghan government can`t sit and watch who is the winner in this bloody game."

"I can't imagine that day the Daesh emerging the winner on the battleground," he added.

According to Afghan officials, Daesh and the Taliban started fighting after Daesh, which holds large parts of Iraq and Syria, began trying to recruit young men in areas traditionally seen as Taliban strongholds.

Daesh announced its presence in Afghanistan last year after proclaiming a caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

Taliban group has slammed Daesh as being extreme, but despite that it has witnessed some of its fighters decamping to the latter.

Last week, the Taliban and Daesh fought in five districts in eastern Nangarhar

province, leaving several holy warriors, including three Taliban capos, dead.

Afghan National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar told politicians earlier this month that Daesh was trying to gain a foothold in Afghanistan's lucrative opium market.

Shaboobs take over Mandera village
Gunmen from Somalia, suspected to be members of Al-Shabaab, have literally taken over a village in Lafey, Mandera County. The presence of the over 30 foreigners has caused fear among villagers, hundreds of whom have left their homes. Four schools, including Gari Boys Secondary School, have also closed down.

On Thursday, students of Gari Secondary School scampered for safety after receiving reports that the gunmen had been spotted on a nearby road.

“A small girl ran into school claiming that she was being chased by armed men who had taken the milk she was taking to the market only for the boys to run into the bush fearing that the militants would attack the school,” said Mr Mahat Adan, the Gari Boys School principal, who has sought refuge in Mandera Town.

Wankara Ward Representative Abdirashid Maalim on Monday said the students had abandoned the school because it is not fenced. Mr Maalim said the reports sparked an exodus, with villagers seeking refuge in Elwak and Mandera towns.

“The armed men have been roaming between Gari shopping centre and Warankara Town, harassing innocent people and warning them never to pass near their camp or inform the authorities of their presence in the area,” said Mr Maalim.

Mandera Deputy County Commissioner Fredrick Ayieko on Monday said they had received reports on the presence of the foreigners.

“We have received reports that Shabaabs have crossed into Mandera… We shall give them a chase because we want a secure county,” he said.

Mr Maalim said the roaming militants have been engaging residents in talk.

The militants, he said, also carry “a lot of money”, adding that they forcibly buy goats from the locals.

“We are worried that this money could be used to lure these runaway students into terror cells. As we mobilise students to come together in a safe place, we want the government to wake up and do something,” he said.

Darkale Ward Representative Mohamed Mohammed said teachers from other parts of Kenya had vacated Banisa Sub-County, fearing for their lives. The foreigners, he said, had also blocked the Elwak-Takaba road.

Mr Adan, the Gari Boys School principal, appealed to the national government to beef up security in the area to avoid disruption of the school calendar.

“Let (the) government secure the area first before we go back, as the Administration Police camp, with only five officers, cannot protect the area,” said Mr Adan.

was targeted by shelling as it approached the country's main southern port of Aden on Sunday, an official said.

The provincial government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, blamed Houthi rebels who control several neighborhoods in Yemen's second city for not allowing the ship to dock at Aden's port, which is controlled by pro-government fighters.

"The Huthis fired shells at a ship chartered by the U.N. that was carrying 7,000 tons of food... when it was within a nautical mile of Aden's port," the official said, adding that the vessel itself was not hit.

"The ship was forced to turn back and by night time it was about five to eight nautical miles from Aden," he added.

According to the official, the vessel had set off from Djibouti, which the U.N. uses as a hub for humanitarian aid bound for Yemen.

The incident was confirmed by a port official, who also declined to be identified.

"The Houthi fire forced the ship to turn back as it approached the port," the port official said.

He accused the rebels of "imposing a food blockade on areas of Aden under the control of the Popular Resistance Committees", which are a collection of pro-government fighters, Sunni tribes and southern separatists.

Swedish police arrest man for suspected terror recruitment
[RUDAW.NET] Swedish authorities say they have tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
a man suspected of recruiting jihadi fighters for murderous Moslem groups in Syria and Iraq.

The Swedish security service, SAPO, says the man, who was not identified, was arrested Monday in the southern city of Orebro.

SAPO says at least 150 people have left the Nordic country to join the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, also known as ISIL or ISIS, and other murderous Moslems.

Orebro is the biggest source of imported muscle outside Sweden's three largest cities, Stockholm, Goteborg and Malmo.

SAPO said the recruitment in Orebro has been linked to individuals at local mosques and urged the public to report any suspicious activities.

It said terror-related recruiting activities in Sweden "directly contribute to the capability of terror organizations like ISIL."
Update from AnNahar:
Sweden's intelligence agency Sapo said Monday that it had made two arrests as part of a crackdown on radicalization and recruitment of Islamic turbans planning to fight in Iraq and Syria.

"The Security Service raided two locations in Sweden, targeting suspected terrorist recruitment and training," the agency said in a statement.

The raids took place in the capital Stockholm and the central Swedish town of Orebro.

According to public broadcaster SR a 45-year old man was nabbed
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in Orebro.

Sapo said it had found links between a mosque in the town and another mosque in Eskilstuna, east of Stockholm, "which has served as meeting points".

"We want to point out that it's not the religious communities which are involved," the agency added, saying that "criminal individuals" had used the premises and recruited mainly in cafes and other meeting places.

Public prosecutor Ronnie Jacobsson told SR that the Stockholm arrest was linked to the sharing of "information on the manufacture of explosives with a person in Syria".

According to Sapo, 110 people are known to have traveled to Syria and Iraq from Sweden to join Islamic Lion of Islam groups but that the figure may be as high as 300.

Indian Army Kills Three Militants near Kashmir Border
[AnNahar] Indian soldiers have killed three armed snuffies in Kashmire in an ongoing shootout, foiling an attack on a military base near the de facto border with Pakistain, officials said Monday.

The fighting erupted early Sunday morning after snuffies crossed the heavily militarized border that divides Kashmire between India and Pakistain, 140 kilometers (86 miles) northwest of the main city of Srinagar, an army front man said.

"We have spotted three dead bodies in the area so far. Intermittent firing is still going on," Colonel Brijesh Pandey told Agence La Belle France Presse, adding that soldiers were mobilized from nearby army camps for the shootout near the border town of Tangdhar.

"One civilian, an old man, was also killed in the crossfire," Pandey said.

A top police official, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, said the snuffies tried to storm the army's brigade headquarters before fleeing to a nearby village.

Kashmire was divided between India and Pakistain after the two countries won independence from Britannia in 1947. Both claim the Himalayan territory in its entirety.

Since 1989 several rebel groups have been fighting hundreds of thousands of Indian forces deployed in the territory administered by New Delhi, for independence of the region or its merger with Pakistain.

The fighting has left tens of thousands, mostly civilians, dead.

India routinely blames Pakistain for training and arming rebels and sending them across the border known as the Line of Control to take part in the fighting.

Islamabad denies the charges saying it only provides political and diplomatic support to Kashmire's struggle for right of self determination.

US drone strike kills four suspected militants in North Waziristan
[DAWN] At least four suspected forces of Evil were killed when a US drone targeted a vehicle in Shawal Tehsil of North Wazoo Agency, near the Afghan border, late on Monday.

According to intelligence sources two missiles were fired by the unmanned aircraft which hit the vehicle, destroying it completely. They further said that several drones were reportedly flying over the border of North and South Waziristan Agency in Shawal valley since evening.

About the possible targets hit in the strike, the sources said that information is being collected but the identity of suspected forces of Evil is yet to be ascertained.

Dattakhel and Shawal are by far the two major areas where the military is concentrating on air power to soften up the area infested by local and foreign Lion of Islams.

North Waziristan is among Pakistain's seven tribal districts near the Afghan border which are rife with bandidos hard boys and are alleged to be strongholds of Taliban and Al Qaeda operatives, among others.

Drone attacks are widely unpopular across Pakistain and according to survey conducted in June last year, 66 per cent of the country's citizens oppose these strikes.

Foggy Bottom warm glow. Anyone feel it besides me ?
The retired general described the terror group as 'a formidable enemy' that cannot be dealt with 'force of arms' alone.

Gen Petraeus commanded US troops in Iraq and devised the strategy behind the 2007 and 2008 surge in troop numbers in the country which eventually led to them securing support from Sunni tribesmen against al-Qaeda.

Iraq's US-backed army is now battling to retake territory which has since been seized by ISIS.

Petraeus scandal parapraph redacted.

Gen Petraeus said 'industrial-strength' extremists cannot be dealt with 'just force of arms', he said in an interview with the BBC.

He said: 'It is really a conventional army that also has elements of an insurgency, and indeed significant terrorist elements as well.'
A hybrid force then, a downside you predicted regarding the Obama total troop pull-out, but failed to remind anyone of, either here or elsewhere.
But when asked to compare ISIS with its forerunner, al-Qaeda, he said that the terrorist group 'had much greater roots in Iraq and much greater numbers than ISIS'.

He said the fact that ISIS had recently captured the key city of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, was 'a strategic loss' but that he believes it will be retaken 'in a matter of weeks or less'.

'You cannot deal with an industrial-strength extremist problem just with force of arms,' he said. 'You have to have that political component as well.'

He added that political changes need be made, starting with the fundamentals: 'The Sunni Arabs have to be given incentives to support the new Iraq rather than to oppose it'.

Gen Petraeus said that the strategy to combat the militants must be refined and augmented and must involve a 'political component'.

He added that he believes Iraqi forces can defeat ISIS as long as they have the right leadership and support.

'During the surge and in the years after the surge, Iraqi forces fought and died for their country at vastly higher numbers than did US and coalition forces. We know that they can fight,' he said.

#1  I disagree. They can be defeated by armed forces alone. Those armed forces have to have the will to go no holds bar apeshit. Not worry about the UN , Hrw, or the media.

#4  Iraq is basically tribal. Religion, whatever perverted form is believed in, is fairly high on the list of things in which to fight. "Country" is somewhere down on the list of priorities for which to fight.

#6  Anyone talking about trying to reestablish the Mideastern national boundaries established by the Sykes-Picot Treaty immediately loses all credibility with me. There will never again be the Iraq - or the Syria- of the 20th Century. Future national boundaries will take into account religious, tribal, and ethnic identities.

I could seriously get behind a widespread effort to create a united Kurdistan - formed from Kurdistan territory in Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Iran.

There will presumably be a Shia state - that might as well be called Persia-Babylon.

There will be a Sunni entity in what was formerly Northwestern Iraq, Southern Syria- and possibly Jordan and parts of western Saudi Arabia

We should get the hell out of the picture - and let the barbarian Muslims slug it out - and let the chips fall where they may.

Iran military adviser killed near Iraq's IS-held Ramadi
[AlAhram] An Iranian officer has been killed near the Iraqi city of Ramadi while advising Iraqi forces on how to recapture it from the Islamic State group, state media reported Monday.

Jassem Nouri, who had also served as a military adviser in Syria, was killed on Thursday, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported.

Political and military leaders joined family members for a memorial service in Ahvaz in southwestern Iran on Sunday ahead of his burial on Monday.

"A seasoned (1980-88) Iran-Iraq war commander, Jassem Nouri was there as a military adviser to share his experience with the resistance fighters in Iraq," the city's Friday prayer leader Qassem Khaziravi told mourners.

Shiite Iran has provided weapons and military advisers to both Iraq and Syria but denies it has deployed any combat troops.

Ramadi is the capital of Anbar, an overwhelmingly Sunni province west of Baghdad, and the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had previously avoided deploying Iran-backed Shiite militias to the area.

But the city's fall to the Sunni faceless myrmidons of IS two weeks ago forced a change of policy.

forces of Evil drove a tank rigged with explosives into a base south of the Iraqi city of Samarra on Monday, killing 38 coppers, military and police sources said.

A further 46 people were maimed in the attack on the Muthanna bases in an area from which security forces and Shi'ite paramilitaries have been fighting to drive out the murderous Moslems.

Security forces seized the complex from the forces of Evil several days ago and were using it as a foothold in an offensive aimed at cutting Islamic State supply lines from the Samarra area to the western province of Anbar.

Anbar's capital, Ramadi, was overrun by the holy warriors two weeks ago in the most significant setback for Iraqi forces since a U.S.-led coalition began bombing the forces of Evil last summer.

Iraq: 10 dead, 27 injured in Baghdad attacks
[AA.TR] At least 10 people were killed and 27 injured Monday in several attacks across the Iraqi capital, police sources said.

Officials said two national guards were killed and another two were maimed after an attack targeting their vehicle in the Abu Ghraib area on the outskirts of Baghdad.

Also, two people were killed and five were maimed following the detonation of a bomb planted in a bus in the neighborhood al-Za'franiya in southeastern Baghdad.

At least three people were killed and 20 were maimed in kabooms which occurred on the Diyala Bridge in southern Baghdad, as well as in the districts of al-Rashidiya and Mahmudiyah, according to authorities.

Three people, including a woman, were also rubbed out by unidentified gunnies, police sources added.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had lifted Baghdad's eight-year curfew on Feb. 7, citing "improved security conditions".

Mass grave of 80 Ezidis found in northern Iraqi province
[AA.TR] The Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights announced Monday the discovery of a mass grave of 80 Ezidis in a village west of Nineveh province in northern Iraq.

“(The mass grave) contained the remains of 80 Ezidi citizens of different ages,” the ministry said in a statement.

Daesh took control of Nineveh province and other areas in the north and west of the country when it led a sweeping attack last summer.

In the subsequent months, the group expanded into areas inhabited by the minority Ezidis around Sinjar to the west of Nineveh.

According to reports, massacres were committed by extremists against the region’s occupants, who Daesh consider “infidels and devil worshippers.”

The reports also said extremists kidnapped hundreds of Ezidi girls and women and took them as slaves.

Over the course of the last few months, regional forces in northern Iraq discovered a number of mass graves containing the remains of Ezidis who died at the hands of Daesh.

dozens of suspected IS sympathizers and put several on trial.

The state security court, a military tribunal, found the four guilty of engaging in "propaganda on behalf of a terrorist group" and of trying to "join the ranks of armed and terrorist organizations".

The suspects, all in their early 20s, had denied the accusations against them.

Their charge sheet indicated one of them had tried to sneak across the border into Syria to join the jihadist group but was arrested by Jordanian security forces before being able to do so.

The others used social media networks to promote IS.

Jordan has borders with both Syria and Iraq and has reinforced security along its frontiers since the conflict erupted in Syria four years ago.

Syria: 29 bodies found in water wells
[AA.TR] The bodies of 29 people, believed to be killed by Syrian regime forces, were removed Monday from water wells in Syria's northern province of Idlib, said a front man for the Idlib Civil Defense.
Isn't that forbidden?
"The regime forces threw bodies into the water wells, when leaving the town of Ariha," Majd Khalaf, front man for the Idlib Civil Defense, told the Anadolu Agency.

Some of the bodies have been in the wells for about a month and were reached Monday morning, Khalaf said.

"We are continuing search efforts, as there may be more bodies in other wells in the region," he said, adding that the opposition forces lacked the necessary equipment to search wells filled with water.

Syrian opposition forces took control of Ariha, west of the city of Idlib city on May 28 from regime forces.

17 Daesh snuffies killed in north

At least 17 Daesh snuffies were killed near a Syrian opposition-controlled town of Soran in the northern Aleppo province, opposition group Damascus Front front man Ahmad Mohammad told the Anadolu Agency.

"Seventeen Daesh Lion of Islams, including one of their commanders, were killed and one of their tanks was destroyed in a village near Soran," said

According to Mohammad, festivities in nearby villages between Syrian opposition forces and Daesh snuffies were ongoing.

"Opposition groups sent their reinforcing units from the Aleppo and Idlib regions have been moved to the north, to Aleppo, to fight against Daesh," he said.

#1  The Turks did that during WWI to deny the Brits access to water at the various oases dotting the desert.

Either that or they would throw in a camel or a donkey. Killing a POW and using him to foul the water supply sort of kills two birds with one stone. I always wondered though if the Turks thought about what they would do if they retook the territory and needed water.

IS-affiliated source releases footage of bombing aftermath near Yarmouk

-affiliated Aamaq News released footage Monday described as showing the aftermath of Arclight airstrikes on Hajar al-Aswad, a district in southern Damascus.

The graphic footage shows children who appear to have been killed. Hajar al-Aswad lies to the south of Yarmouk refugee camp, a district into which Islamic State fighters moved in early April before reportedly withdrawing two weeks later.

The video shows the apparent bomb strike aftermath, followed by graphic footage of dead and injured children being treated and prepared for burial.

Established in 1957 for Paleostinian refugees, the Yarmouk camp has frequently been the scene of fighting since the ongoing Syrian Civil War began in 2011. ISIS overran Yarmouk in April, and has since been in festivities with the pro-Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, Aknaf Bait al-Maqdis Paleostinian militia.
