Afghanistan
Gunmen Kill Five in Kabul Sufi Mosque Attack
[AnNahar] Gunmen attacked a Sufi mosque in Kabul on Saturday evening, killing at least five people and leaving six others maimed, police officials said.

"A group of gunnies entered (a Sufi mosque)... and opened fire, killing five people and injuring six others," Kabul police front man Hashmat Stanikzai told AFP.

Deputy interior ministry front man Najib Danish confirmed the details of the attack, which took place at around 7:00 pm (1430 GMT), and the toll.

Stanikzai said an investigation had been launched to "identify the attackers and the motive behind the attack".

The rare attack on Kabul's Sufi minority shattered a relative calm that had descended on the Afghan capital in recent weeks.

Though no group grabbed credit for the attack in its immediate aftermath, Afghanistan remains plagued by a Taliban insurgency more than 13 years after the krazed killer group was ousted from power.

UN base comes under attack in Mali
[EURONEWS] Unknown attackers fired more than thirty rockets at a United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
base in northern Mali early on Sunday (March 8).

One UN peacekeeper was killed and eight others injured in the attack on the outskirts of Kidal.

French forces helped retake Mali's desert north from al Qaeda-linked murderous Moslems two years ago.

At least one rocket hit a nearby camp for Tuareg and Arab nomads.

"We were sleeping when the rockets fell," camp resident Rhissa Ag said. "Three rockets landed near us and a third fell just outside my house. Two are dead and three are seriously injured, including my wife."

UN and French troops who share the base returned fire and sent air support.

The incident is the third attack in the country this weekend, and comes as the UN is trying to reach a peace agreement with Tuareg separatists for the desert north.

According to Austrian Foreign Ministry front man Martin Weiss on Saturday, during the Friday afternoon attack on the Ghani oilfield, south of Sirte, several members of a security detail were killed. Security forces later retook the oilfield, but nine foreign employees are still unaccounted for, he added.

Among the missing are one Austrian, one Czech and seven non-EU citizens, he went on to say.

Egypt Carries out first Hanging over Pro-Morsi Violence
[AnNahar] Egypt on Saturday carried out the first death sentence handed down over the violence that erupted after the army's 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, the interior ministry said.

Hundreds of Morsi supporters have been sentenced to death after speedy mass trials, which the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
has described as "unprecedented in recent history".

Mahmoud Ramadan, who was hanged at 7 am (0500 GMT), was the "first to be executed of those involved in violent festivities," ministry front man Hani Abdel Latif said.

A court in Egypt's second city Alexandria sentenced Ramadan and another Morsi supporter to death in 2014 after convicting them of throwing youths off an apartment block, killing one of them.

They were among dozens of people put on trial over deadly violence in the city's Sidi Gaber neighborhood on July 5, 2013, two days after Morsi's ouster by then army chief and now President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

The violence came as supporters and opponents of the elected president held rival demonstrations across the city.

A government crackdown on Morsi's supporters left hundreds dead and thousands detained and put on trial.

Hundreds were killed in a single day on August 14, 2013, when police stormed two pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo.

The ousted president is himself facing multiple trials on charges that carry the death penalty.

The leader of Morsi's Moslem Brüderbund movement, Mohammed Badie, has already been sentenced to death in one trial.

Many of the prosecutions have been in mass trials, which then U.N. human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
chief Navi Pillay described last June as "obscene and a complete travesty of justice."

The government crackdown has triggered retaliatory attacks by Islamist bully boyz targeting security forces in Cairo and other major cities, but mostly in the Sinai Peninsula where troops are battling a raging insurgency.

Scores of coppers and soldiers have been killed in the attacks, most of them claimed by Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the Egyptian affiliate of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

Late on Friday a kaboom in the textile town of Mahallah, north of Cairo, killed one person and maimed 11.

The interior minister who oversaw the crackdown on Morsi's supporters, Mohammed Ibrahim, was replaced on Thursday amid mounting criticism of the failure by police to halt the attacks.

His successor Magdy Abdel Ghaffar appointed 25 new commanders on Friday in a major shake-up.

One Killed in Bomb Blast in Egypt Textile Hub
[AnNahar] A kaboom in front of a mobile phone service store in Egypt's textile town of Mahallah killed one person and maimed another 11 people on Friday, police said.

Militants have regularly set off bombs in Egyptian cities, mostly targeting police, since the 2013 military overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi unleashed a deadly government crackdown on his supporters.

Friday's bomb was set off late at night on the main street of Mahallah, a textile hub 115 kilometers (70 miles) north of Cairo.

The kaboom went off in front of a mobile phone service store and a bank, police said.

One person was killed and 11 people were maimed, a police officer said.

Health ministry official Khalid al-Khateb confirmed that at least seven people were maimed in the bombing.

In recent weeks bombs have been set off near mobile phone service outlets in Cairo, although they have been rudimentary.

Mahallah, a town in the Nile Delta, has been a site of regular labor strikes for years.

A massive strike there in 2008 is seen as a precursor to the 2011 uprising against former president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
The town has not seen holy warrior attacks as in some other cities including Cairo, Alexandria and even in the Nile Delta.
Ynet adds:
Egyptian officials say a bomb has went kaboom! in front of an Emirati bank branch north of the capital, killing a policeman and a civilian and wounding 16. Security and health officials from Gharbiya province said Saturday that the bomb went off overnight in Mahalla, 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Cairo.

Mali bar attack kills five in Bamako
Bamako, Mali -- Five people have been killed in a machine-gun and grenade attack on a bar in Mali's capital, Bamako.
Another one for Besoeker's list...
A masked gunman opened fire at La Terrasse bar, killing a French national, witnesses said. A Belgian security official working for the EU and three Malians also died in the attack.

One witness said an attacker shouted "God is Great" in Arabic ("Allahu Akbar").
That convinces me but it won't convince Marie Harf...
It is the first attack of its kind in the capital. Police sources said two people connected to the incident had been detained.

It is not clear who carried out the attack,
Lutherans? Quakers? Ruritanians? Esquimaux? Use your imagination, BBC, progressives are good at that...
but al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants have been fighting the army in northern Mali for a number of years. France, the former colonial power in Mali, intervened two years ago to stop their advance south on Bamako.

French President Francois Hollande condemned the attack as "cowardly". He spoke by phone to Malian counterpart Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and they "decided on common measures to strengthen security in Mali", the French presidency said.
Unless the "common measures" include tracking down and killing the al-Qaeda hard boyz it isn't going to work. Though Marie Harf would offer them jobs...
If confirmed as the work of Islamist fundamentalists, this would be the first such attack in Bamako. But locals have long feared it might happen.

Many think the UN and the French and Malian militaries have been complacent to believe the danger is limited to Mali's north. There is very little security in Bamako apart from around foreign embassies and the UN mission.

The attack happened shortly after midnight. Witnesses and officials said the attackers had killed the Belgian and Malian victims near the bar. Our reporter says French soldiers arrived quickly afterwards on the first-floor nightclub on Saturday.

They confirmed that a man killed at the bar, in the Hippodrome area of the capital popular with expatriates, was a French national. The French foreign ministry later named him as 30-year-old Fabien Guyomard, who French media said was in Mali working for a private company. One of the Malian victims is believed to have been a police officer, and another a security guard, our correspondent says.

A witness told the BBC he had seen four men flee the scene in a vehicle and one on a motorbike.

Nine people were wounded in the attack, officials said. They reportedly include three Swiss citizens, two of whom were soldiers working at the UN mission, according to the Swiss defence ministry.

Boko Haram leader pledges allegiance to IS
Kano, Nigeria -- The leader of Nigeria's Boko Haram militants, Abubakar Shekau, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group in an audio recording released Saturday.

"We announce our allegiance to the Caliph of the Muslims, Ibrahim ibn Awad ibn Ibrahim al-Husseini al-Qurashi," said the voice on the message, which was believed to be that of Shekau and was released through Boko Haram's Twitter account.

Qurashi is better known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the IS group which has proclaimed a caliphate in parts of Syria and Iraq.

Shekau spoke in Arabic, but the message contained French and English subtitles. It was not immediately necessary possible to verify the authenticity of the message.

Shekau was not pictured, a contrast from most of Boko Haram's past messages in which the Islamist leader has been shown, often in close up shots. But Shekau did identify himself in the recording, which was accompanied by the subtitles and a graphic including an image of a radio microphone.

There have in recent months been signs of closer ties between the Nigerian militants and the IS group, with both using similar ways of communicating with the outside world. Boko Haram has notably begun releasing videos that resemble those made by IS.

Boko Haram has been waging a six-year uprising against the Nigerian state, which has claimed more than 13,000 lives.

Analysts have long debated the extent of Boko Haram's ties to other jihadist groups, but the evidence was never clear.
Except for the bombed churches and dead bodies, they mean...

Three Bombings Blamed on Boko Haram Kill 58 in NE Nigeria
[AnNahar] Three bombings, including one by a female suicide kaboomer, killed at least 58 people and maimed 139 others in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
on Saturday, in the latest violence blamed on Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
Many children were among the dead in the kabooms that hit two crowded markets and a busy bus station in Maiduguri, the region's largest city and capital of the embattled Borno state.

The Nigerian Islamist bully boyz have relentlessly attacked Maiduguri throughout their six-year uprising, which has cost more than 13,000 lives and security forces in the city have struggled to contain the bloodshed.

Nigeria has since last month claimed key victories over Boko Haram in an offensive being waged in cooperation with forces from neighboring Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, Chad and Niger.

Several towns and villages in the northeast previously captured by the holy warriors have reportedly been taken back by government troops and experts have said that in response Boko Haram was likely to increase attacks on civilian targets in major cities.

- Markets, bus station attacked --
A woman with explosives strapped to her body blew herself up at roughly 11:20 am (1020 GMT) when she got out of a motorized rickshaw at Maiduguri's Baga fish market, said the head of the fisherman's union, Abubakar Gamandi, who was at the scene.

"The bomb was devastating because it occurred at a crowded area," said Jamuna Jarmi, a grocery seller.

Boko Haram has deployed women and even girls as young as seven as human bombs in attacks across northern Nigeria in recent months, prompting global condemnation, including from other jihadist groups.

About an hour later another blast rocked the popular Monday Market, causing chaos as locals voiced anger at security forces who struggled to control the scene.

Just after 1:00 pm a third blast hit a used car lot which is attached to the busy Borno Express bus terminal.

There were indications that the second and thirds blasts were also carried out by jacket wallahs but details were not immediately clear.

Borno's police commissioner Clement Adoda gave a toll of 58 dead "for the three locations" and 139 maimed.

"Normalcy has been restored," he added, declining to give further details.

Gamandi, who was supporting rescue workers at Maiduguri General Hospital, told AFP that "the dead include women and kiddies" but said most of the victims were men.

Danlami Ajaokuta, a vigilante leader whose fighters have been working with military across the northeast, said the security forces had ordered the closure of all businesses in Maiduguri fearing the prospect of further attacks.

Borno State's Justice Commissioner Kaka Shehu blamed Boko Haram for Saturday's violence, describing it as a response to the defeats suffered by the holy warriors in recent weeks.

"The bandidos holy warriors are angry with the way they were sacked from towns and villages and are now venting their anger," Shehu told AFP.

- Elections looming --
Nigeria postponed its elections initially scheduled for February to March 28 after security chiefs said they needed more time to weaken Boko Haram.

While reported victories in the remote northeast may enable polling in areas previously controlled by the Lion of Islams, rising unrest in Maiduguri is likely to raise fear as election day approaches.

Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekau has vowed to disrupt the vote and widespread attacks, especially near polling stations, could prove disastrous.

Hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the conflict are living in Maiduguri, swelling the city's population to well over two million.

Maiduguri residents have voiced overwhelming support for opposition leader and former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, who is thought to be running neck-and-neck with President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
.

Buhari, a Moslem from the north of religiously divided Nigeria, is expected to poll well among those hit hardest by Boko Haram.

But Jonathan, a Christian from the southern oil producing Niger Delta region, is still seen as having considerable support in many areas and analysts have said the likely result is still to close to call.

Britain
Charities Stop Funding UK Rights Group Linked to 'Jihadi John'
[AnNahar] Two charities have stopped funding a rights group in contact with the man thought to be Islamic State group executioner "Jihadi John" before he left for Syria, Britain's charities regulator has said.

Rights group Cage describes its work as supporting people arrested or raided as a result of the "war on terror" following the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
In other words, jihadis.
It worked with Mohammed Emwazi for over two years and, when he was identified by the Washington Post as "Jihadi John" last month, its research director Asim Qureshi described him as a "beautiful young man" and blamed British intelligence for radicalizing him.

That claim was described as "reprehensible" by Prime Minister David Cameron's official spokesman.

The Charity Commission, a government body, said Friday that two charities, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust and the Roddick Foundation, have ceased giving money to Cage and will not do so in future.

The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust had given £271,250 (376,000 euros, $408,000) to Cage between 2007 and 2014 while the Roddick Foundation -- set up by the late Body Shop founder Anita Roddick -- gave £120,000 between 2009 and 2012.

The Charity Commission said that public statements by Cage had "heightened concerns about the use of charitable funds to support their activities."

"In our view, those statements increased the threat to public trust and confidence in charity and raised clear questions for a charity considering funding Cage's activities as to how the trustees of those charities could comply with their legal duties as charity trustees," it added.

The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust said in a statement that it had come under "intense regulatory pressure" to cease funding Cage.

"In the light of regulatory pressure and to protect the interests of all our grantees and the other work of the trust, we have decided to publicly confirm that we will not fund Cage either now or in the future," it added.
There's always the option of suing them for return of funds obtained under false pretenses used to support terrorism...
Cage spokesman Amandla Thomas-Johnson said it respected the charities' decisions and thanked them for their past support.

"Cage will remain committed to its principle of speaking truth to power and calling for accountability and transparency," he added. "We will not hesitate in performing our role as whistleblowers and as advocates for due process."
"Not to mention supporting jihadis wherever we might find 'em," he added with manly firmness.

#2  Note that one of the charities didn't spontaneously decide to stop funding the charity. They only stopped their funding after "intense regulatory pressure" presumably from the "Charity Commission" an official British governmental agency.

I guess even charity is officially regulated by the government in Britain.

Frenchman on trial for helping girl seeking to join ISIL via Turkey
[Hurriyet Daily News] The French girl knew him as "Tony Toxiko" - an Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) recruiter who first used Facebook to cajole her into joining him in Syria, then brusquely called to force the issue: Come to me or risk damnation. She was 14.

The recruiter promised to marry Amelia and teach her to fight, but first she had to get to the war zone and needed an adult's help. The middleman, Riad Ben Cheikh, went on trial in Gay Paree on March 6 on charges of criminal association with the preparation of a terrorist act, and aiding a runaway.

Amelia has since become pregnant and is believed to be in Syria, the prosecutor and defense lawyers said March 6.

The trial offered a rare glimpse into the world of ISIL recruitment of girls, a growing concern for many Western governments. Britannia recently was shaken by the news of three teenage girls leaving their families with apparent intent to join a friend with Death Eaters in Syria. In many cases, families have little warning and Europe's open borders and travel rules make the trip easy, even for adolescents.

Amelia's Internet quest to learn more about Islam ended up with her pledging her hand in marriage to an unknown jihadi twice her age. Her last name was not made public because she is a minor.

Judicial documents say Amelia used her savings to buy a one-way ticket from Lyon to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

, with the aim of reaching Syria. Riad Ben Cheikh is accused of booking her a hotel room the night of Feb. 24, 2014 in the Lyon area, and paying her train fare to the Lyon airport.

Detained in line for Istanbul flight

The girl was detained as she lined up for her flight to Istanbul. Her parents, who discovered a paper trail for her one-way ticket the day before, had flagged her to police. Ben Cheikh has said he believed he was only helping her rejoin her husband in Syria.

The prosecutor requested a sentence of three years in prison with one year suspended. Ben Cheikh's lawyer said his client "never had the intention to go to Syria, as could be seen from the phone taps and surveillance of his Facebook conversations."

"I just want to add that I'm not a terrorist and I regret this situation," Ben Cheikh said. A ruling is expected to come next Tuesday.

Amelia told Sherlocks that Ben Cheikh bought her a full face- and body-covering veil, and told her to destroy her phone SIM card to avoid detection. In court March 6, Ben Cheikh denied that.

Ben Cheikh has been jugged

About 100 girls and young women from La Belle France are believed to be in Syria, most drawn there after making contact online with recruiters for jihadi groups.

Jean-Francois Gayraud, deputy chief of La Belle France's Counter-Terrorism Coordination Unit, said information surfacing from a hotline established for parents worried that their child may be radicalizing, or headed to a war zone, shows there is not just one profile of French youth looking to live their dreams via jihad.

"We are (seeing) nearly all social categories, all origins," Gayraud told AP at a terrorism conference on March 6.

But there are "mental archetypes" for boys and for girls, he said.

'A fantasy of adventure, virility'

"For men it is obviously, as often, a fantasy of adventure, virility, a search for something else," he said. "For maidens of tender years it is often the fantasy of generosity, charity and helping others."

In general, the radicalization phenomenon is often the "reflection or symptom of social or family pathologies," Gayraud said. He refused further details because of the private nature of the information.

Amelia told Sherlocks she was reluctant to leave her family at first, and told Tony she was just 14. His response: "It was her duty to marry him and he would teach her to fight," according to court documents.

Tony, also identified in court documents by his first name Brahim, told Amelia that Ben Cheikh was an old friend. Ben Cheikh denied a long acquaintance.

Amelia's journey to extremism did not end with her detention. After the Istanbul flight was thwarted, she later traveled to Belgium, married a man in a Moslem ceremony, and became pregnant, the prosecutor and defense lawyers said.

Since then, they said, she has disappeared, and is believed to be in Syria.

#1  Man, if it was me, I'd pay for their airfare, plus generous travel expenses. And another $5,000 living expenses for getting on their feet when they get to Syria. Heck, why be mingy, $10,000. Life is expensive in a war zone. And confiscate their passports on their way out the door. Best possible deal for all concerned, most especially the French.

A Spanish Interior Ministry statement said Sherlocks working with Turkish authorities have uncovered evidence Yerou was allegedly performing "a major recruitment role."

She left the northern Spanish city of Rubi in December, taking her three-year-old son along with her. The child's disappearance was reported by his father, who lives in Spain.

Spanish authorities have arrested more than 20 people since last September as part of efforts to stop young citizens from joining Lions of Islam in Syria or Iraq.

The ISIL Death Eaters, with members from several Western countries, control parts of Syria and Iraq, and have been carrying out horrific acts of violence such as public decapitations and crucifixions against all communities.

Woman arrested after trying to crash into MIA terminal
A couple days old but, if you accept that the woman was jabbering in Arabic, clearly WoT related.
Miami -- A woman arrested at Miami International Airport after she allegedly, with intent, rammed her car into a police cruiser in an attempt to crash into the terminal will be facing a federal judge Friday afternoon.

According to Miami-Dade Police, the female driver apparently tried to drive her silver Toyota Camry through the doors of the departure section of Concourse D, just after 4 p.m. Thursday. "She came from the outer loop and drove into the inner loop, in what appears to be a direct attempt to breach, a security breach through the front doors utilizing the vehicle," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

Before she could hit the terminal, however, she crashed into a Miami-Dade Police cruiser and came to a halt. It is unknown whether the cruiser was occupied at the time.

Officials said the woman exhibited unusual behavior and began making threatening remarks to responding officers. "They ran over to where the subject was, and that's when she began to yell in what appeared to be an Arabic language," said Zabaleta, "and then in English told the responding officers she had a bomb in her possession."

Police had the entire upper level closed to traffic and cleared all media reporting at the airport from the scene, which was described as "tense." They then brought out bomb-sniffing dogs to check the woman out as well as her car.

As FBI and Homeland Security agents also arrived on the scene, passengers were stunned. "Oh, we get a little concerned because, you know, you see a lot of police cars," said passenger Fatima Dias.

No explosives were found on the woman, who was later identified as 33-year-old Honduran citizen Julissa Magdalena Maradiagaiscoa, but authorities nevertheless combed over the car, pulling out paperwork, mail and what appeared to be a license and a passport from the vehicle. They also searched her luggage in an effort to find out her motives and what prompted the security scare.

Maradiagaiscoa was then taken into custody. The FBI said there seems to be no connection to terrorism in this case.
The FBI, of course, could make that determination in less than 10 seconds. They're good at that, you know, they've had lots of practice...
Maradiagaiscoa remains in custody and is expected to appear in court at 2 p.m., Friday. The exact charges she may face have not been released.

India-Pakistan
ATC indicts three in Karachi airport attack case
[DAWN] An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
indicted three suspects on Saturday over involvement in a Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP)-claimed attack on Karachi's Jinnah International Airport in June 2014.

The three suspects -- Sarmad Siddiqui, Asif Zaheer and Nadeem alias Burger (also alias Mullah) -- were produced in court amid tight security. All three pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
to the charges against them.

The court has now summoned all witnesses in the case for the next hearing scheduled for March 14.

An ATC in 2014 had remanded Siddiqui, Zaheer and Nadeem for allegedly providing logistical support, funds and weapons to the snuffies that attacked the Karachi airport.

At that time, the Investigating Officer (IO) had submitted a report which said that the suspects were tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
on Oct 28 and two of them were found carrying unlicensed weapons.

The IO had contended that during initial interrogation the suspects had disclosed that they purchased 9mm and CF 98 pistols by using the license of arms dealer Hameedur Rehman and handed over the weapons to Malik Mumtaz Awan and others.

The brazen five-hour attack by snuffies took place at Karachi's international airport last year killing 28 people, including 10 attackers.

The attack had started late Sunday when gunnies disguised as police guards stormed the terminal after opening fire with machine guns and a rocket launcher. This attack led to the launching of Operation Zarb-e-Azb
..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)...
in North Wazoo to control growing militancy in the country.

The same year, the attack's criminal mastermind Abu Abdul Rehman al Maani was killed during overnight Arclight airstrikes in 2014 carried out in action by fighter jets controlled jointly by Pakistain Air Force (PAF) and Pakistain Army in North Waziristan.

Intelligence and military sources had told Dawn that Abu Abdur Rehman Al Maani was considered a key commander of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), also now famous by the name of Islamic Movement of Turkestan. The IMU, an organization of snuffies mostly from the central Asian Uzbek state, had claimed that its jacket wallahs had carried out the attack in alliance with TTP.

IS destroying another ancient archaeological site in Iraq
BAGHDAD -- Iraqi officials in the northern city of Mosul said Saturday that militants with the Islamic State group have begun demolishing the ancient archaeological site of Hatra in northern Iraq in a push to rid its territory of symbols it says promote idolatry.
One hopes these places were extremely well documented at some point in the past... and that like the Bamiyan Buddhas, there will turn out to be more buried under the earth than what was destroyed above it. Ditto for the once-existing historical places of Saudi Arabia, of course. Still, at least some of it will turn up on the international antiquities market -- the funding needs for ISIS are never ending.
An official with the ministry of tourism and antiquities' archaeological division in Mosul told The Press Agency That Cannot Be Named that multiple residents living near Hatra heard two large explosions this morning, then reported seeing bulldozers begin demolishing the site.

Saeed Mamuzini, a Kurdish official from Mosul, told the AP that the militants had begun carrying away artifacts from Hatra as early as Thursday and on Saturday, began to destroy the 2,000-year-old city.

Hatra, located 110 kilometers (68 miles) southwest of the city of Mosul, was a large fortified city during the Parthian Empire and capital of the first Arab kingdom. The ancient city, a UNESCO world heritage site, is said to have withstood invasions by the Romans in A.D. 116 and 198 thanks to its high, thick walls reinforced by towers.

The Sunni extremist group has been campaigning to purge ancient relics they say promote idolatry that violates their fundamentalist interpretation of Islamic law. A video they released last week shows them smashing artifacts in the Mosul museum and in January, the group burned hundreds of books from the Mosul library and Mosul University, including many rare manuscripts.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian fisherman killed by Israeli fire
Gaza City -- A Palestinian fisherman was shot dead by Israeli forces on Saturday off the coast of the Gaza Strip, a spokesman from the Palestinian health services said.
Fishermen. Simple fishermen. Simple, heavily-armed fishermen...
The 32-year-old died in hospital in Gaza City after he and two other fishermen in the same boat were fired upon by the Israeli navy. The two other fishermen were arrested and taken to Israel, according to the spokesman.
And what were they smuggling when caught?
Whatever Hamas wanted them to. Most likely weapons for Ansar Bayt al Maqdis if they were headed outward, either rocket raw materials, building supplies or trade goods if they were going home.
An Nahar adds:
Israeli army spokeswoman told AFP that four Palestinian boats had strayed out of their designated fishing zone overnight Friday.

"Soldiers fired warning shots then targeted the engines of two of the boats, which were then transferred to Israel for investigation," she said. "The two other boats were able to return to Gaza."

IS Advances on Strategic Town in Northeast Syria
[AnNahar] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group launched a fierce military assault Saturday in a bid to gain control of a strategic town in Syria's northeastern Hasakeh province, a monitoring group said.

"IS has begun an offensive toward Tal Tamr and has advanced in several surrounding areas," Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told AFP.

"Kurdish fighters supported by Assyrian militia have fought them off in Tal Nasri," just south of Tal Tamr, leaving at least eight IS fighters dead, he said.

Assyrian Christian fighters withdrew from some areas to Tal Tamr itself to join Kurdish forces defending the town, said Osama Edward, head of the Sweden-based Assyrian Network for Human Rights.

"This is the most violent offensive on the town in a long time," he told AFP.

Since it began its onslaught in the province on February 23, IS has gained control of at least 10 villages around Tal Tamr, which lies about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the Turkish border and is currently under the control of Kurdish forces.

If Tal Tamr falls, IS would gain control of a key road in Hasakeh province that links to their bastion to the east in Iraq's second city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
In February, IS kidnapped 220 Assyrians from areas neighboring the town, prompting 5,000 people to flee the countryside in fear of the jihadist advance.

So far, 23 of the kidnapped have been released in exchange for a "jizya," or tax paid by non-Moslems.
I imagine that once again the Christians of Christendom are taxing themselves to rescue their brethren in the Ummah, thus sharing the oppression of jizya far beyond Islam's border,
Before Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011, there were roughly 30,000 Assyrians in the country, among a total Christian population of about 1.2 million.

Terror Networks
Kurds, Assyrians push ISIL back in Syria
[Iran Press TV] Kurdish fighters backed by local Assyrians have reportedly pushed Lions of Islam of the ISIL Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
group back in northeastern Syria.

On Saturday, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported fighting around the town of Tal Tamer, which it said was coming under ISIL artillery fire.

Observatory director Rami Abdurrahman said the ISIL turbans initially made gains but the Kurds forced them back.

The so-called Observatory said at least eight turbans and an unknown number of Kurds were killed.

The Takfiris attacked a number of Christian villages in Syria's northeast on Saturday, triggering heavy fighting with Kurdish forces and their local allies.

According to activists, the attacks, which started around dawn, hit at least three villages near Tal Tamer along the Khabur River in the Hasakah province.

Osama Edwards, the director of the Sweden-based Assyrian Network for Human Rights, said the center of the festivities was villages on the northern bank of the river as the ISIL Lions of Islam are seeking to take the strategic town, some 35 kilometers (20 miles) from the city of Hasakah.

The ISIL terror group kidnapped over 220 Christians from several villages near Tel Tamer last month. Terrorists have been trying to capture the town, which is the corridor to the eastern border of Iraq.

UAE's F-16s launch fresh airstrikes against Daesh
Amman - The UAE Air Force F-16 squadron deployed to an airbase in Jordan conducted fresh airstrikes last night against the terrorist organisation Daesh.

The UAE F-16s struck a number of Daesh’s operation and extraction points along crude oil pipelines in order to dry up the terror group’s sources of funding. The jets hit their targets and returned safely to base.
An Nahar adds:
A U.N. report in November estimated that IS was earning between $850,000 and $1.6 million daily from oil sales.
So as of today they are earning somewhat less.
