Mike Omeri, the government front man on the insurgency, said fighting continued Friday for Baga, a town on the border with Chad where Lions of Islam seized a key military base on January 3 and attacked again on Wednesday.
Security forces have responded rapidly, and have deployed significant military assets and conducted Arclight airstrikes against holy warrior targets, Omeri said in a statement.
District head Baba Abba Hassan said most victims are children, women and elderly people who could not run fast enough when Lions of Islam drove into Baga, firing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles on town residents. Just break a single Boko knees and Amnesty will be up in arms.

The previous bloodiest day in the uprising involved soldiers gunning down unarmed detainees freed in a March 14, 2014, attack on Giwa military barracks in Maiduguri city. Amnesty said then that satellite imagery indicated more than 600 people were killed that day.
The 5-year insurgency killed more than 10,000 people last year alone, according to the Washington-based Council on Foreign Relations. More than a million people are displaced inside Nigeria and hundreds of thousands have fled across its borders into Chad, Cameroon ...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. [NY Times] A girl perhaps no more than 10 years old detonated powerful explosives concealed under her veil at a crowded northern Nigeria market on Saturday, killing as many as 20 people and wounding many more. Nothing is ever too much, is it?
The blast inflicted devastating damage on shoppers at the Monday Market in Maiduguri, the shopping hub in a city that is at the heart of the Boko Haram ... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality... insurgency. The kaboom, witnessed by dozens of people, represented a new tactic in the Islamists campaign with their decision to use perhaps their youngest-ever jacket wallah. Think about that the next time they start whining about "the blood of Moslems."
The terrorist group has increasingly employed women as suicide bombers, even as it has stepped up its abductions of girls across northeast Nigeria ... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border... , including the kidnapping of more than 200 in the town of Chibok last April. Late last year, two women hit the Monday Market in suicide kabooms, killing dozens, and in one week last summer four women carried out bombings in northern Nigerias biggest city, Kano.
But the use of a child to kill witnesses, police officials, a top hospital official in Maiduguri and local vigilantes all agreed that the bomber was very young may be unprecedented in the insurgency.
Its a little girl, said the hospital official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the delicacy of his position. The body is beyond recognition, but from the face you can see its a young person. A young pretty girl.
A vigilante group has taken responsibility for much of what little security exists in Maiduguri, and on Saturday morning, before the blast, several members of the group had screened the girl with metal detectors as she entered the market, said a front man, Abubakar Faruq.
The girl resisted, the vigilantes noticed a bulge around her waist and the bomb went off, Mr. Faruq said. A police front man said 20 people were killed and 18 others critically maimed.
Several witnesses said it appeared that the girl might not have been aware of her deadly burden. Bakura Bashir, a shopper who witnessed the kaboom, said: This girl may not necessarily know she was conveying a timed bomb. The girl was torn into two halves, and half of her body was thrown across buildings by the devastating blast.
A top federal police official in the capital, Abuja, who once worked in Maiduguri, said Saturday that the terrorist group appeared to have embarked on a new path.
Its something quite new, and its disturbing, using these young, maidens of tender years wearing hijabs, the official said, referring to the Moslem veil.
Now, one has to be suspicious of any lady wearing a hijab whether its a young lady, or an old lady, said the police official, who asked not to be quoted by name because of concerns about his position.
Boko Haram has carried out a spate of attacks recently in the northeast, including a devastating one in Baga, a fishing village north of Maiduguri, that killed dozens last week; an assault on the nearby city of Damaturu on Friday evening that set off a shootout lasting more than four hours, but that was ultimately repelled by security forces; and a bombing in Potiskum on Saturday that killed two coppers.

Kano, Nigeria -- At least two people were killed when a car exploded at a police station in Potiskum, northeast Nigeria, an officer told AFP.
The blast at the facility attached to the Potiskum Area Command at about 3:30 pm (1430 GMT) involved a driver and vehicle which had earlier raised suspicions at a checkpoint outside the city.
“It was while they were at the gates of the police station undergoing security checks that the car exploded,” said the officer, who asked not to be identified. “The policeman and the driver have been confirmed dead but details of other casualties are not clear yet.”

Officers arrested one man on Friday following raids at four properties in Sydneys southwest that police said were part of a long-running investigation and not as a result of any specific terrorism threat.
The 33-year-old was arrested and charged with acquiring and possessing ammunition illegally, police said.
The investigation, which has been running for more than a year, is looking into alleged financial and other support for imported muscle in conflicts including those in Syria and Iraq.
Police said the raids were not connected to the 16-hour standoff at a Sydney cafe in mid-December that left the lone gunman, self-styled Islamic holy man Man Haron Monis, and two hostages dead.
But they follow large-scale counter-terrorism raids across the country in September that came as Australia upgraded its terror threat to high on growing concern about bandidossnuffies returning from conflicts in the Middle East.
Separately, a 21-year-old man was arrested Friday on warrants related to the possession of unauthorized and unregistered firearms and ammunition found in a separate raid last month.
His arrest came as part of an ongoing counter-terrorism operation into people suspected of involvement in domestic terrorist acts, fighting in Syria and Iraq and the funding of terror groups, police said.
Both mens cases were adjourned on Saturday until next week and lawyer Adam Houda, who is representing both men, stressed that his clients were not facing terror charges.
There is no suggestion at all there is any links with any terrorism, he said outside court, Australian News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported.

Police in Germany have detained two men suspected of an arson attack early Sunday against a newspaper that republished the cartoons of French weekly Charlie Hebdo.
The newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost said on its website the overnight arson attack destroyed several files in its archive, but didn't injure anyone.
Hamburg police said it had detained the two young men near the newspaper building. Police spokeswoman Karina Sadowsky told The Associated Press several stones and a Molotov cocktail were found in the newspaper's archive in the basement of the building.
A young Muslim man has been hailed a hero for hiding hostages fleeing gunman Amedy Coulibaly after he stormed a Jewish supermarket.
Lassana Bathily, originally from Mali in west Africa, reportedly shepherded terrified customers to safety in a walk-in chiller as the jihadist gunman took hold of the Hyper Cacher supermarket in Porte de Vincennes, Paris, on Friday. Coulibaly executed four of the 19 hostages before police entered the building and ended the assault, killing the gunman as he ran to the front door.

Reports in France state Mr Bathily, 24, helped lead six people to safety.
Mr. Bathily did a good, courageous thing at a time when most people would have cowered in fear. Thank you, sir.
Several people called for Mr Bathily to be recognised for his actions as details of the episode emerged.
One tweet from worldwithjan read: "A true hero of the hostage crisis in the kosher grocery store yesterday."

But refusing to be cowed, more than 200,000 poured onto the streets in cities across La Belle France in poignantly silent marches paying tribute to those killed in the nations bloodiest week in more than half a century.
The marches across the country were a taste of what was to come in Gay Paree Sunday, where a monster rally will be held for national unity, to be attended by President Francois Hollande ...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist... and a host of world leaders.
The defense ministry said it was sending another 500 soldiers into the greater Gay Paree area, bringing current numbers to some 1,350 troops.
After Fridays dramatic events, Hollande warned grimly that the threats facing La Belle France werent over, comments followed by a chilling new threat from a Yemen-based Al Qaeda group.
Security forces were focused on hunting down 26-year-old Hayat Boumeddiene, the armed and dangerous partner of Amedy Coulibaly who took terrified shoppers hostage in a Jewish supermarket on Friday, killing four of them.
People laid flowers at the shop as a tribute and one woman attached signs to a police barrier reading: Je suis Charlie (I am Charlie), I am police, I am mourning, I am Jewish.

[DAWN] The Punjab police claimed on Friday to have jugged Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'! 481 people for misusing loudspeaker, holding provocative speeches and possessing hate material throughout the province.
Police claimed arrests and registration of 667 cases against the suspects in an ongoing crackdown which is the continuation of the National Action Plan announced by the federal government.
According to two news releases, as many as 593 cases have been registered for misusing loudspeaker and 297 arrests have so far been made.
Up to 16 cases have been registered for provocative speeches while 130 people have been arrested. Similarly, 25 people have been arrested on charges of wall chalking. However, the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits... the release did not mention as to how many cases have been registered in third category.
In the picturesque provincial capital, as many as 58 cases were registered and 29 people were arrested on Friday.
During the crackdown, police also confiscated a large number of books, pamphlets, banners, newspapers, memory cards, DVDs, CDs, USBs, booklets and computers from various districts.
Inspector General of Punjab Police Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera had ordered the fresh crackdown three days ago against all miscreants/anti-state elements involved in instigating the masses through printed hate material, provocative speeches and misuse of loudspeaker.
According to the IGP, such people, who are becoming the controllers for terrorists, will be dealt strictly and with full force.

The Jamatul Ahrar faction, which parted ways with the main Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) last year, said that it orchestrated the attack on the Mosque-cum-community centre last night in which eight people were killed and 16 injured.
"We claim responsibility for the attack on the Rawalpindi Imambargah ...since Pakistain is very religiously correct, Shia Moslems can't call their houses of worship 'mosques,' which are reserved for Sunnis. It's not clear if imambargahs are used for explosives storage like mosques are... and we will continue such attacks in future," the group's front manEhsanullah Ehsan ...formerly the front man for the Pak Taliban, now the lips and tongue of the Jamaatul Ahrar splinter group in Mohmand Agency... claimed in a message sent to media houses.
The bomber attacked the the Mosque-cum-community centre at about 9.30 PM last night when a religious congregation was on in densely populated Chittian Hatian area of the city.
The attacker came on a cycle of violence and tried to enter the compound but set off the bomb near the gate when he was stopped by volunteers deployed at the entrance.
Investigations are on, but no arrest has been made so far.

[DAWN] Four suspected holy warriors belonging to the Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) were rubbed out in an encounter by a special unit of police in Qayyumabad ...a suburb of Korangi Town, if you know where that is... , adjacent to the Defence Housing Authority, on Friday morning, according to officials.
They were allegedly planning an attack on a security intelligence officials vehicle that usually passed through the area, said CID counterterrorism unit official-in- charge Raja Umer Khattab.
He said the police received a tip-off that the suspects planning to carry out a gun attack on the vehicle of the intelligence official, followed by a suicide kaboom, were sitting near a truck stand in Qayyumabad. The police conducted a raid there and four suspects were bumped off in an ensuing exchange of fire. One of the dear departed was identified as Sajjad alias Kargil ... three months of unprovoked Pak aggression, over 4000 dead Paks, another victory for India ... , a commander of the AQIS in Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... , Mr Khattab said.
The other dead men were identified as Mohammed Hashim, Yasir Arafat and Shamim alias Commando.
The officer said Sajjad had gained expertise in preparing suicide jackets and kaboom. Till 2009, he was a citizen of Bangladesh and a member of the Jamaat-ul-Moslemeen, a religious party in Bangladesh. He shifted to Pakistain following a crackdown against the group there. He got a computerised national identity card issued in his name through an agent in Karachi. He then shifted to Wazoo, where he joined holy warriors namely Asif alias Chotu, Qari Zafar and Umer Farooq, who was recently killed in a drone attack there, said the CID counterterrorism unit head.
Sajjad did his Bayat at the hand of Asim Umer, head of the AQIS in 2014. He was made the commander of the AQIS in Karachi and was tasked by Asim Umer to recruit Bengalis to establish a network for Jehadi activities there, said Mr Khattab.
Sajjad had allegedly killed seven coppers, the officer said, adding that he had also been involved in four blasts through improvised bombs in Karachi.
He had allegedly done full recce of the route of the intelligence officer and was planning to target him when the encounter took place at 7.30am, said the CID officer.
The police claimed to have seized a suicide jacket. Mr Khattab said he had never seen such a suicide jacket since he had started dealing with terror cases in Karachi. A Kalashnikov assault rifle was also seized from the custody of the suspects, he added.

According to sources, eight suspected faceless myrmidons were killed as security personnel repulsed a Taliban attack on their camp in Dattakhel in the small hours of Friday.
The troops resorted to intense firing after faceless myrmidons fired 15 rockets at the camp and the suspects were killed during the ensuing clash.
Dattakhel was placed under a curfew and security forces launched a search operation in the area to track down the attackers.
In Tirah valley, an accidental blast in a bunker in Khyber Sangar area of Sipah left four activists of the banned Lashkar-e-Islam ...a group of Islamic bandidos infesting Khyber Agency. It's headed by a former bus driver.... group dead early in the morning.
Security personnel stationed at the Jarrobi camp pounded the place with shells while the LIs activists were retrieving the bodies of their colleagues.
Three suspected LI activists were killed in the shelling.
The bunker was located in a stronghold of the LI that was reportedly controlled by the groups chief. LI activists had in the past defended the bunker against rival groups Ansaarul Islam and Tauheedul Islam.

The bully boyz crossed the Zab river by boat and occupied Gwer -- some 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Kurdish regional capital Arbil -- for about an hour before being pushed back, the officials said.
Accounts differed as to whether the attack began late on Friday or early Saturday.
The 26 people killed were members of the Kurdish asayesh security forces, said Barzan Qassab, the deputy head of the asayesh for Arbil, and the toll was confirmed by another asayesh souce.
Some members of the peshmerga -- the autonomous Kurdish region's other main security force -- were also reported to have been killed.
"It was unexpected," peshmerga Brigadier General Hajar Ismail said of the boat crossing.
IS spearheaded a major myrmidon offensive that has overran large parts of Iraq north and west of Baghdad since June.
The Gwer attack is one of the single deadliest attacks on Kurdish forces since the myrmidon drive began.
After sweeping federal security forces aside and driving south toward Baghdad, IS launched a renewed push against Kurdish forces, driving them back toward their regional capital Arbil.
That helped spark a U.S.-led campaign of air strikes, and Kurdish troops have since managed to regain ground from the myrmidons, including Gwer.

[Ynet]. Iraqi authorities say two separate bombings on commercial streets have killed eight people in and around Baghdad.
Police officials say a bomb went kaboom! Saturday at a wholesale market in Baghdad's western district of Baiyaa, killing five people and wounding 11 others.
Later on, a kaboom inside on a commercial street killed three people and maimed nine others in the town of Madian, about 20 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of the capital.
Medics confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
[Mindanao Examiner] A government militiaman was injured following a gun battle with Abu Sayyaf militants on Saturday.
Western Mindanao Command spokeswoman Capt. Maria Rowena Muyuela said the militiamen, who are members of the Barangay Police Action Team, were on patrol in Sulu's Talipao town when the militants attacked them with rifle grenades.
The militiamen fought some 30 militants under Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders Angga Adji and Roger Saji. Muyuela said, "The firefight lasted for almost ten minutes that resulted to the wounding of one Barangay Police Action Team member Akmad Aburan."
She said it was not known if there were any Abu Sayyaf casualties.

[AnNahar]. Car bombs killed at least 16 people, most of them civilians, when they targeted al-Qaeda and Kurdish fighters Saturday in Syria's northern province of Aleppo, a monitor said.

The latest incident occurred in or around the town of Al-Boleel in Deir Al-Zor province not far from where a senior figure in Islamic States self-declared police force was said to have been killed on Tuesday and at least three members of the group were reported kidnapped on Wednesday.
Syrian state TV said the latest attack was carried out by the popular resistance in the eastern region. An Islamic State vehicle was targeted and three people inside were killed, the television station reported in a headline flashed on screen.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said preliminary reports indicated that three Islamic State activists had been killed. It identified the target as Islamic States office in Al-Boleel.
The killings occurred after midnight on Friday, it said.
After the attack, Islamic State carried out an arrest campaign, said Rami Abdulrahman, director of the Observatory. He said Islamic State had confiscated Internet equipment in the area, hindering the Observatorys reporting.
Islamic State controls nearly all of Deir Al-Zor province, which stretches from its stronghold in the Syrian province of Raqqa to the border with Iraq and links together its self-declared caliphate in the two countries.

[REUTERS] A suicide kaboom on a cafe in the Lebanese city of Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... killed at least seven people on Saturday, the latest violence to hit a region repeatedly buffeted by violence linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria.
The army said the attack in the predominantly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen was carried out by one jacket wallah. Leb's National News Agency said it was a double suicide kaboom and gave the names of two attackers it said were from Tripoli.
Leb's Health Ministry put the corpse count at seven but officials said nine people were killed, not including the bombers.
Three dozen other people were maimed in the attack. The governor of northern Leb ordered a curfew until 7 a.m. in Jabal Mohsen and the army set up a security cordon around the cafe, the National News Agency reported.
The National New Agency said that a jacket wallah blew himself at Cafe Omran in Jabal Mohsen and when the residents of the area gathered another suicide bomber went kaboom!.
"The two suicide bombers who blew themselves up in Jabal Mohsen are Taha Samir Kayyal and Bilal Mohammed Ibrahim from Tripoli's al-Mankobeen," it added.
