Afghanistan
American Major General Killed in Shooting at Afghan Military Academy
The video says the last two-star American general to die in combat was due to a helicopter crash in Vietnam.
American general was killed today and 15 other soldiers wounded in an attack at a military academy in Afghanistan today.

The incident happened at a military academy that trained officers at Camp Qargha in Kabul when a gunman wearing an Afghan army uniform turned his weapon against Americans and other Afghans, ABC News has learned.

A U.S. official described the shooting victim as a two star major general, the highest ranking official to be killed in the Afghanistan war. American generals usually have their security detail.

It is the latest in a string of so-called "green-on-blue" attacks in Afghanistan, in which members of the Afghan forces have attacked U.S. and coalition forces. The attacks have become less frequent in recent months as fewer U.S. troops have been on the ground in Afghanistan.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack and described the shooting victim as a "foreign officer."

The Pentagon confirmed to ABC News today that in addition to one fatality, 15 International Security Assistance Force personnel were injured. Karzai said that both Afghan and foreign soldiers were hurt.

"The soldiers were visiting the military academy to help with the buildup of Afghan security forces," Karzai said. He blamed the attack on "enemies who don't want to see Afghanistan have strong institutions."

"We are in the process of assessing the situation," the ISAF Joint Command said in a statement. "More information will be released as we sort out the facts."

#13  Frank, he is a good example of most Europeans. They never understood us, never will. We come to their rescue over and over again, provide security for decades, spend billions of dollars and national treasure. Yet they cant wait to criticize our culture. We are demanding, we cowboy up, we are violent, we understand that to keep enemies at bay we must remain the most violent force on earth. We take pride in our victories and shame those that abdicate power. They will never understand us like they never understood vikings... I pity them and their lack of maturity.

#18  This is, as with the loss of any soldier, a tragedy. I send my condolences to his family.

His rank though does not elevate the loss above that of any other soldier. Today our military training program is so robust that Schwarzkopf related in his biography, that the introductory speaker to his session of "orientation for new general officer" class said that if all the members of the class had perished on the way to the school, he was confident that the next rank of senior Colonels could easily replace them.

This hasn't always been true, and it need not remain so, but for now, we are blessed with talent. So let us morn the soldier, not his rank.

The death of MG Greene is not only about that of a soldier or of a high ranking officer, but also highly relevant to the mismanagement of the war in Afghanistan. And that is not all due to Obama.

More information: Troops Shot During Deadly Attack in Afghanistan
[NBC] A U.S. Army two-star major general was killed Tuesday in an insider attack at an Afghan military training facility, U.S. Defense and military officials told NBC News.

More than a dozen Western soldiers in all — including several Americans — were shot as high-level officials visited the heavily guarded military complex.

The carnage started when a lone gunman dressed in an Afghan army uniform opened fire with an automatic weapon during a meeting at the Afghanistan National Military Academy, located at the Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul.

Gen. Mohammmad Zahir Azimi, a spokesman for Afghanistan's Defense Ministry, tweeted in Dari that the gunman was wearing an Afghan military uniform and was shot dead after opening fire on Afghan and international colleagues.

A senior security source told NBC News that the suspected gunman was a bodyguard of the Paktia provincial governor, and his fellow soldiers killed him during the ambush.

Somali Shebab Claim Killing of Senior Police Chief
[An Nahar] Somalia's al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab said they had carried out a boom-mobileing that killed a senior police chief in the north of the war-torn country Monday, the latest in a string of attacks.

"With the blessing of Allah, the mujahedeen have carried out a successful operation targeting senior apostate officials," Shabaab front man Abdulaziz Abu Musab said in a statement, boasting that three other coppers also died in the blast.

Government officials in Mogadishu confirmed the death of Adirahman Abbas, police chief in the Bari region of Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
region, on the northern Gulf of Aden coastline.

Abbas headed the police in Puntland's key port of Bosaso, the Bari region's main city.

A jacket wallah is reported to have driven a car loaded with explosives at Abbas' car.

Officials confirmed that other coppers died in the blast, without giving an exact number.

Musab claimed the police chief was "targeted due to his crimes against Mohammedans... having imprisoned, tortured and killed many, thereby fulfilling the orders of the Crusaders."

Recent Shabaab attacks in Somalia have targeted key areas of government and security forces in an apparent bid to discredit claims the gunnies have been weakened.

"God willing, everyone who treads his path will face a similar fate," Musab added.

Up to 10,000 Egyptians Stranded at Libya-Tunisia Border
[An Nahar] Up to 10,000 Egyptians fleeing the fighting in Libya are still stranded at the border with Tunisia, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri said Monday on a visit to Tunis.
Isn't that in the wrong direction?
"So far we have evacuated around 2,500... we don't have exact statistics but between 5,000 and 10,000 people" are still waiting to leave, he said at a news conference after meeting Tunisia Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa.

Shoukri did not specify how long it will take to repatriate all the Egyptians, though Cairo promised on Saturday to take home about 2,000 people a day by air and if necessary by sea.
Thing is, things aren't much better in Cairo...
The Egyptians are stuck on the Libyan side of the border with Tunisia after the government there said it would only let in people other than Tunisians and Libyans if they could prove arrangements were in place to get them home.

On Friday, hundreds of Egyptians tried to storm the Ras Jedir border crossing into Tunisia, prompting Libyan border guards to fire warning shots.

Tunisia said it would not be opening a camp to accommodate Arab and Asian workers fleeing Libya as it did in 2011 during the civil war which led to the overthrow of long-time dictator Muammar Qadaffy
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland and was then murdered by his indignant subjects 42 years later...

This time Tunis asked each state to organize the repatriation of its citizens, only letting them enter the country as and when transport became available.
Since things aren't going so well in Tunisia...
Since mid-July, Libya has seen deadly festivities between rival militias in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and the eastern city of Benghazi.

Tripoli airport has been closed since gunnies, mostly Islamists, attacked it on July 13 in a bid to wrest control from the Zintan brigade of former rebels who have held it since the 2011 revolt.

Africa Subsaharan
Anxiety over fate of Boko Haram 'chief butcher'
[Osun Defender] There was anxiety yesterday over the whereabouts of the suspected Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
"chief butcher" Mohammed Zakari in police custody.

The suspect was tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
on July 15 after a counter-insurgency operation in Balmo forest in Bauchi State, which was rated as the major armoury of the sect.

The suspect had been undergoing interrogation in a police facility.

A source claimed that the suspect was in Bauchi; another said he had been transferred to a secret location in Jos.

It was gathered that the tension over the suspect's whereabouts was heightened by the fact that he had not been grilled by the military and other security agencies.

A top security source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, confirmed that there was disquiet over the fate of the suspect because the police did not state the extent of their investigation into his activities.

"No one can also explain who is keeping the suspect in the last two weeks. There are different claims on whether he is in Bauchi, Jos or Abuja," the source said, adding: "It could also not be confirmed whether he is still alive or dead during encounters. The situation is creating fears in the states under emergency rule.

"Those from these states have been raising concerns on Zakari's actual status."

It was also learnt that there were issues about the lack of coordination between the police and the military and security agencies.

A military source, who spoke last night, said: "Well, the police arrested the suspect they should be in the best position to account for his whereabouts.

"So far, we have not been involved in the quizzing of the suspect."

Attempts to get official confirmation from the police last night did not yield results.

A text message to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Frank Mba, was not replied as at 8pm.

Europe
Rabbi attacked in Sweden, days after synagogue vandalized
Hat tip William Jacobson and Legal Insurrection. Just the latest example of "Swedes" named Mahmoud and Abdul and their rabid anti-Semitism.
And no pushback whatsoever from Swedes with pure Viking ancestry.
A rabbi from the Swedish city of Malmo was attacked by men who hurled objects at him from a car and used anti-Semitic pejoratives.

Rabbi Shneur Kesselman was assaulted on Saturday night along with a member of his congregation, the Sydsvenskan daily reported Sunday. The attack, which resulted in no physical injuries, came on the heels of vandalism against the southern city's main synagogue on July 31, when unidentified individuals smashed three of the building's windows by hurling objects at them.

The assault against Kesselman, who has been the subject of dozens of similar attacks in Malmo over the past decade, happened as he and congregation member Hugo Klein were walking away from the synagogue at 9 P.M. A car approached them with several men inside who called out: "F---ing Jews" and hurled a glass bottle at Klein and Kesselman. The bottle shattered on a wall behind them.

Earlier that same evening, a lighter was thrown at the men from a passing car.

Malmo, a city of 300,000 residents, is home to a few hundred Jews. A third of the city's population is immigrants from Muslim countries or their descendants.
Nice going, Sweden...
Dozens of anti-Semitic crimes are reported annually in Malmo. Last month, a man was beaten there for displaying an Israeli flag in his window.

Spain Detains 14-Year-Old Girl as Jihad Suspect
[An Nahar] Spanish police said Monday they had detained a 14-year-old girl and a 19-year-old woman suspected of trying to join Islamic snuffies fighting in Iraq and Syria.

Security forces stopped the teenagers on Saturday as they tried to enter Morocco allegedly to join Islamic State, whose fighters have seized swathes of Iraq and Syria, the government said.

"The detention of two women recruited for jihad is a remarkable and unprecedented event in Spain," the interior ministry said in a statement.

The girl, who could not be identified because she is a minor, was just 14, an official said. The 19-year-old woman was named as Fauzia Allal Mohammed. Both are Spanish citizens.

Video footage released by the Spanish authorities showed the two women, both covered in black niqabs, being led away from a small propeller plane, each flanked by balaclava-clad coppers.

The pair were detained at the Beni Enzar border crossing in Melilla, one of two tiny Spanish territories on the north African coast. Both Melilla and the other Spanish city, Ceuta, share a border with Morocco.

"Both were trying to cross the border to Morocco with the aim of contacting the network which would move them immediately to a conflict zone between Syria and Iraq," the Spanish ministry said.

"Their intention was to join one of the cells of the terrorist organization of the self-proclaimed Islamic State," it said.

Spain's government said Islamic State, which declared an "Islamic caliphate" on June 30 in Syria and Iraq, wanted to recruit as many imported muscle as possible, luring them on jihadist web sites and forums and then helping to arrange the logistics of their transfer to war zones.

"The two women detained in this police operation are a clear example of this," the interior ministry said.

"Their radicalization, recruitment and later dispatch as combatants were perfectly planned and organized by a network that operates across north Africa and has as its main goal getting the maximum number of unquestioning combatants."

The recruitment of a minor showed that the network had no regard for its targets' sex, age or personal situation, the ministry said, adding that an investigation remained open.

The Spanish government has said it fears battle-hardened Islamist fighters may return to Spain from Syria and other conflict zones under the influence of Al-Qaeda-inspired groups, posing a threat of attacks.

Spanish security forces have led at least three significant raids on jihadist recruitment cells this year, arresting more than 20 people.

Spain this year marked the 10th anniversary of the March 11, 2004, Al-Qaeda-inspired bombing of four packed commuter trains in Madrid, which killed 191 people.

Since the train bombings, more than 470 suspected Islamic snuffies have been incarcerated
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
in Spain, according to the government.

Syrian Arrested In Belgium Over Terror Fears
[IsraelTimes] A Syrian man has been tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
in Belgium on suspicion of participating in terrorist activities after he was found to be in possession of videos showing killings linked to a jihadist group, his lawyer said on Saturday.

The 25-year-old man, who has not been named, was detained after he arrived at Charleroi Airport in Brussels on Tuesday during a search of his possessions.

Two fake French passports and a USB stick containing video clips of killings and jihadist propaganda were found in his belongings, according to lawyer Thomas Piccini.

Belgian authorities proceeded to arrest him on Friday suspecting he may have links to the Al-Nusra Front — an Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadist group active in Syria's civil war.

Piccini said his client denies having any links to jihadist groups, and claims to be a journalist who was held hostage by the Al-Nusra front before escaping.

The man said he arrived in Belgium after travelling via Turkey and Greece, and wanted to go to Sweden to pursue a degree in journalism, according to Piccini.

The news of the arrest came as a French-Moroccan man recently deported from Turkey was arrested on Saturday upon arrival in La Belle France.

The man was arrested at Charles de Gaulle airport in Gay Paree as part of a preliminary investigation for "criminal association with a view to preparing terrorist acts," the French interior ministry said in a statement.

EU countries have become increasingly concerned about the "blowback" threat posed by European-born Islamists returning from fighting in Syria with combat experience and the weapons expertise required to carry out terrorist attacks.

La Belle France and Belgium recently agreed to step up cooperation on the issue in the wake of a deadly shooting at a Jewish Museum in Brussels.

Mehdi Nemmouche, a Frenchie who spent more than a year fighting in Syria, was last month charged with the attack, in which four people were killed.

Iraq's Yazidi minority flees militant threat
[DAWN] Tens of thousands from Iraq's minority Yazidi community have fled their homes after Sunni forces of Evil captured their towns in the latest offensive to expand the territory of their self-styled caliphate.

As Kurdish fighters struggled to hold back the onslaught of the Islamic State forces of Evil on Iraq's north, some 40,000 Yazidis, a minority religious sect, fled the northern towns of Sinjar and Zumar, said Jawhar Ali Begg, a front man for the community. "Thousands of Yazidi people have been killed," he said.

The krazed killer group gave the Yazidis, who follow an ancient religion with links to Zoroastrianism, an ultimatum to convert to Islam, pay a tax or face death, Begg added.

Iraq is facing its worst crisis since the 2006 civil war when the Islamic State group, an al Qaeda breakaway faction with a strong presence in Syria, captured large swaths of land in the country's west and north in a lightning offensive earlier this year.

The United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
said last month that more than 500,000 people have been displaced by the violence since June, bringing the total this year to 1.4 million, including more than 230,000 Syrian refugees.

The group drove ethnic and religious minorities out of Iraq's second-largest city, djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, and attacked mosques and shrines, claiming they contradicted strict Islamic teachings.

Kurdish forces, known as the peshmerga, have been battling with the forces of Evil for control of several towns stretching between the province of Nineveh and the Kurdish Iraqi province of Dahuk.

At least 25 Kurdish fighters were killed in festivities with the forces of Evil on Sunday, and another 120 were maimed, according to Muhssin Mohammed, a Dahuk-based doctor.

A statement Monday by the Islamic State said it had captured dozens of Kurdish prisoners during the festivities and seized "large number" of weapons.

The authenticity of the statement could not be verified, but it was posted on a website used by the group.

#1  Sorry to highjack. But this deserves it's own post on the Rant. Rudaw: US to Give Kurdish Forces Air Support.

The official source who didn’t want to be named said that the US would also provide the Kurdish Peshmerga with arms and military expertise.

The American offer is said to include humanitarian aid to be transported by air to the people of Shangal and Zumar who have been displaced as a result of fighting in their areas.

This newspaper has also learned that a number of European countries have contacted the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) with offers of military support.

But some Iraqi intelligence and security officials are far more alarmed by the Islamic State's less heralded campaign in rural areas just south of the capital, rugged Euphrates valley terrain once known to U.S. forces as the 'triangle of death'.

1 Israeli Dead, 5 Hurt as Palestinian Excavator Rams Jerusalem Bus
[An Nahar] One Israeli was killed and five others injured Monday when an excavator rammed into a Jerusalem bus, turning it over before the driver was rubbed out by police, officials said.

The incident took place on the seamline between east and west Jerusalem and came as Israel pressed a major military campaign in Gazoo which has killed more than 1,800 Paleostinians.

Police said the excavator had overturned a bus, prompting two coppers who were in the vicinity to open fire, killing the driver and foiling what they described as a "terrorist attack."

"He hit a bus and turned it onto its side and as a result three people were lightly injured who were on the bus," Jerusalem police chief Yossi Pariente told news hounds at the scene, adding that the bus was nearly empty when it was hit.

"Two police happened to be in the area ... they got out of their car and fired at the (excavator) and as a result (the driver) was killed," he said.

Emergency services front man Zaki Heller said one person had been killed and five hurt in the attack.

"A 25-year-old man was run over by the excavator and killed, and the bus driver was moderately to lightly injured," he told Agence La Belle France-Presse, saying another four people were lightly hurt in the incident.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri identified the victim as a 25-year-old ultra-Orthodox Jew resident in Jerusalem.

She said the driver was a Paleostinian from Jabal Mukaber in annexed Arab east Jerusalem.

At the scene, the driver's body could be seen lying on the ground covered with a white plastic bag and a prayer rug, an AFP correspondent said.

Nearby, the bulldozer's windshield was completely destroyed.

Israel, Palestinians Agree 72-Hour Truce from Tuesday as Gaza Death Toll Hits 1,865
[An Nahar] Israel and the Paleostinians have agreed a new 72-hour Gazoo ceasefire that would start at 0500 GMT Tuesday, said a bigwig in Egypt, which is hosting truce talks.

"Egypt's contacts with relevant parties have achieved a commitment for a 72-hour truce in Gazoo starting from 0500 GMT tomorrow morning, and an agreement for the rest of the relevant delegations to come to Cairo to conduct further negotiations," the official told Agence La Belle France-Presse.

A Paleostinian delegation, including Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, representatives, has been holding talks in Cairo with Egyptian mediators for a durable truce in Gazoo, but Israel has not yet sent any negotiators to the Egyptian capital.

Gaza War: Day 29 Liveblog
Terror returned to Jerusalem Monday, as two attacks left one man dead and several more injured. In Gaza, the IDF said it had finished destroying Hamas tunnels. Prime Minister Netanyahu said the operation would go on until sustained quiet was guaranteed, but late Monday Israel accepted an Egyptian-brokered truce to start Tuesday morning, and several Hamas officials said they had accepted it. Rocket fire on Israel continued throughout the day. The IDF death toll stands at 64. Gazan health officials put the death toll there at some 1,800. Israel says hundreds of those are Hamas fighters.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Tension in Bab al-Tabbaneh as Residents Protest over 'Army, Hizbullah Bombing of Arsal'
[An Nahar] Several people rallied on Monday in the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood of the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
to protest what they considered the "army and Hizbullah

's shelling" of the eastern border region of Arsal.

The protesters' march took off near Tripoli's Harba mosque and they roamed streets surrounding Bab al-Tabbaneh, arriving at the northern city's Abou Ali roundabout, the state-run National News Agency reported.

They shouted slogans criticizing the bombing of Arsal "by the army and Hizbullah."

Protesters tried to block the main streets linking Tripoli to the northern city of Akkar, but army troops interfered using tear bombs and prevented them from executing their plan, the NNA noted.

The army then closed the international road at the Abou Ali roundabout, and diverted traffic in the area towards the seaside road.

Later in the evening, tension soared in the Tripoli neighborhood as media outlets reported festivities between the army and the protesters.

MTV said a hand grenade was hurled near an army post at the Abou Ali roundabout, adding that reports said one soldier was maimed in the incident.

Arsal Fighting Enters Third Day as Ceasefire Being Negotiated
[An Nahar] Fierce fighting raged for the third day in the mountains around the northeastern border town of Arsal on Monday as the army announced 14 soldiers have been killed in the battles and as efforts to reach a ceasefire were underway.

A military source told LBCI television: "We have allowed a temporary ceasefire so that a Mohammedan Scholars Committee delegation can enter Arsal and return with the hostage soldiers, which is the first condition for continuing the implementation of the agreement's remaining points."

There will be no truce, but rather a temporary ceasefire aimed at allowing the negotiating delegation to enter the town, explained LBCI.

Govt. Declares Full Mobilization: No Leniency with Terrorists, Only Solution is Their Pullout from Arsal
[An Nahar] The government on Monday announced the mobilization of all its political and security agencies in defense of Arsal in the face of the "flagrant aggression," noting that the only way out of the current confrontation lies in the withdrawal of the "terrorists" from the border town.

"Leb is facing a flagrant aggression against its illusory sovereignty and security at the hands of obscurantist terrorist groups, which have dared to attack the army's dignity to execute a suspicious plot aimed at paralyzing the state and sowing chaos in Arsal and its surroundings," Prime Minister Tammam Salam announced after an emergency cabinet meeting.

"The cabinet has decided to mobilize all Lebanese state institutions and security agencies to defend our country and confront any attempt to attack it," Salam added at a presser, during which he was flanked by several ministers in a show of solidarity with the army that is fighting deadly battles against holy warrior groups in Arsal.

The premier said the responsibility rests equally on the shoulders of "our armed forces and security agencies which have confronted the Death Eaters in defense of the land."

"The army, which is offering one martyr after another, enjoys the full support of the government with all its political components, and it stresses that it stands shoulder-to-shoulder behind it as it carries out its sacred mission," added Salam.

He underlined that the government will spare no effort to support the army as it defends Leb, noting that it has asked French authorities to "expedite the delivery of arms as part of the deal with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
."

"There will be no leniency with the terrorists, no settlements with those who have violated Lebanese territory, and no political solutions with the takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
s," Salam vowed.

He warned that the Death Eaters want to export their "sick practices" to Leb, underlining that "the only solution is their withdrawal from Arsal and its surroundings and the return of the state with all its agencies to this dear region."

"We stress to all friends that our country will overcome the crisis the same as it defeated the previous ones. We send a special salutation to the good sons of Arsal and we assure them that their sufferings will not protract and that their state will not abandon them or leave them to be a prey to chaos," added Salam.

"We bow in respect to Leb's military and civilian deaders," Salam said on behalf of the government, pledging that "the attack on national dignity will not go unpunished" and reassuring that "the cabinet is on alert."

Fourteen soldiers have been killed and 86 others maimed since the eruption of the battle on Saturday while 22 troops have gone missing, according to an army statement. At least three civilians have also been killed by the gunnies.

The festivities began after the arrest of a Syrian man accused of being a top leader of al-Qaeda's Syrian branch al-Nusra Front. Following his arrest, gunnies surrounded army posts before opening fire, sparking the festivities.

Around 21 coppers were also taken hostage by the gangs on Saturday.

Islamic State seizes territory inside Lebanon
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] The jihadists of Islamic State have seized their first territory inside Leb, a long-feared strike that threatens the country's uneasy sectarian balance.

A Syrian rebel group which has sworn allegiance to the Islamic State's leader has set up check-points in the Lebanese town of Arsal on the two countries' border, though it has stopped short of declaring it part of the IS's "Caliphate".

Lebanese army troops have moved up to attack the town, pouring in shells and putting at risk not only the 40,000 local inhabitants but the estimated 120,000 Syrian refugees who have taken shelter there.

The crisis brought a rare show of unity from Syria's competing political factions, with the Sunni prime minister Tammam Salam standing alongside the rest of the cabinet to give a statement. "The attack on Lebanese national dignity will not go unpunished," he said, calling Islamic State's behaviour "sick".

However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
the broader jihadist movement in Syria has won support from Sunni holy mans inside Leb, which also has its own branch of the Syrian al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra. Jabhat al-Nusra is also said to have participated in the seizure of Arsal, though a statement it issued was ambiguous.

The immediate trigger for the Islamic State's move was the arrest on Saturday by the Lebanese army of Abu Ahmed Joumaa, the leader of a small brigade in the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
who subsequently declared allegiance to Islamic State.

Arsal occupies a highly sensitive position as a Sunni town on the border, and has been used as an escape and supply route by the mainly Sunni Syrian rebels throughout the civil war. However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
it is surrounded by Shia areas that are largely controlled by Hizbollah, which is fighting on the side of the Syrian regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
Hizbollah has said it will help the army retake Arsal, threatening a long-feared spillover of the Syrian war into a sectarian conflict inside Leb itself.

The army says it tossed in the clink
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
Joumaa because he intended to attack army outposts and declare Arsal an "Islamic emirate".

So far, the army says it has found the bodies of 50 krazed killers, and lost 14 of its own men. More than 22 police and soldiers have been seized by the Islamic State and taken away, as captives or hostages.

The incursion may be linked to renewed fighting on the Syrian side of the border, where the rebels were beaten back in a major offensive earlier this year but have continued to stage attacks, including over the weekend.
