Afghanistan
Taliban Ambush Karzai Security Team in Paktia
[Tolo News] Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
's security team is ambushed in Zurmat on Thursday as they were on their way to Urgoon ahead of Karzai's visit to offer condolences. ‎

Karzai's Deputy Spokesperson Faiq Wahidi told TOLOnew "this morning, the security convoy of the president of the Islamic republic of Afghanistan was on its way toward Paktia province when the Taliban ambushed the convoy in the suburb of Gardiz city, after the clash between the two sides, reinforcement dispatched to the area, currently the clash has ended and the security team is continuing on its way, so far we have recorded four injuries."

At least four Presidential Protection Service (PPS) guards are maimed as fighting still continues. Reinforcement has been dispatched.

There are reports of some PPS servicemen being captured by the Taliban in Zurmat district.

Sources says that the guards are either out or low on ammunition.

About two dozen PPS forces were driving to Urgoon as an advance team to prepare for President Karzai's visit.

Afghan National Army Maj. Gen. Mohammad Sharif Yaftali, commander of the 203rd "Thunder" Corps, rejected the Taliban ambush claims on Karzai's security team but confirmed the existence of the team in Zurmat district of Paktia province.

"They are not under any siege, they just lost their way and about 500 assistance forces have been sent to the area," Yaftali told TOLOnews.

According to reports the number of PPS security guards sent in advance is 50. The Taliban siege has been broken by Afghan cops.

Sources say there are causalities, but the exact number is not clear.

The Taliban have grabbed credit for the attack.

Insurgents Attack Kabul Airport
[Tolo News] A group of suicide kaboomers early Thursday morning attacked Kabul International Airport (KIA) and started festivities with the Afghan National Security forces (ANSF).

Deputy Interior Minister Gen. Ayoub Salangi tells TOLOnews that about 4:20 a.m. local time turbans positioned under a construction building in Qasaba area began firing at the airport.‎

According to the Ministry of Interior (MoI) Spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi, there were six myrmidons.

Four of the six turbans were bumped off by ANSF and the two others detonated their explosives killing themselves.

The first jacket wallah detonated an car bomb at the start of the clash only claiming his life; the second suicide bomber let 'er rip before being bumped off by the ANSF.

The foreign troops supported the ANSF with air force.

Security officials say that Commander of Army Brigade 111, Gen. Qadam Shah Shahim, was maimed in the attack and hospitalized in Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan hospital for further treatments.

"I was shot but it is not serious. I am doing fine now," Gen. Shahim said.

The clash ended around 9 a.m. local time with no civilian causalities. According to reports, the turbans were targeting military aircrafts that are housed at the airport. According to Deputy Minister of Interior for Security Affairs, Gen. Mohammad Ayoub Salangi, there were no damages to the military aircrafts the turbans were targeting.

"Two rocket launchers and ammunitions that belonged to the turbans have been confiscated," Salangi, said. "No civilian and military personnel were hurt in the attack."

Haq Nawaz Haqiar, commander of the Afghan border police forces at Kabul airport, confirmed Thursday's attack on Kabul airport, saying that no damages were brought to commercial and military aircrafts.

Intense clashes erupted early this morning in Abdalla-Biroole, a town 45km south of Kismayo the provincial capital city of Lower Jubba region. Gunmen Attack Yemen Police Camp, Kill Two
[An Nahar] Gunmen have killed two Yemeni police in an attack on a camp for anti-riot forces in the central province of Baida, an al-Qaeda stronghold, an official said Thursday.

The assailants on board two vehicles fired machineguns at the camp in the town of Rada late on Wednesday, and on-duty coppers shot back at them, said the regional government official.

"Two coppers were killed and a third was maimed" in the clash, he said, adding the assailants fled after failing to storm the camp.

The official was unable to say if there were any casualties among the attackers.

Separately, the official said the authorities still had "no news of two coppers kidnapped two days ago in Baida," the historic provincial capital.

In January 2012, hundreds of holy warriors briefly took over Rada before withdrawing under pressure from powerful tribal leaders.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, is active across several parts of Yemen and has taken advantage of a collapse of central authority during a 2011 uprising that ousted veteran president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
.

It is considered by Washington as the most dangerous affiliate of the jihadist network for its role in failed attacks against the United States.

Attacks on members of the security forces are common in Yemen and usually blamed by officials on AQAP, which rarely claims responsibility.

4 suspected TTP men held
[DAWN] Four individuals with suspected links to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) group were tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
during a targeted operation in the capital's rural outskirts, sources told Dawn.

The sources said the operation was conducted by Rangers, police, and security officials, following intelligence gathered in the Siahala area.

During the operation, raids were conducted on two houses, which led to the arrest of the four individuals, who are allegedly affiliated with the TTP's North Wazoo chapter and had been hiding in the area for the last few weeks. The raids also led to the recovery of weapons, maps, and other documents containing sensitive information.

Following their arrest the suspects have been shifted to some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location for questioning, which aims to gain information on their controllers and accomplices in the city.

The sources said following an exchange of fire between police officials and a group of gunnies late Thursday night on Service Road Gangal, a search operation was conducted in the area and its surrounding localities. The raids were a part of the post-shootout operation. On the condition of anonymity, coppers said that an individual killed during the shootout has been identified as Abdullah, 25, a Bajaur native. "His body is still in the hospital mortuary, no one has come to claim the body," they said.

The capital police have approached political agencies in Bajaur for details of the dear departed, as well as his family, for legal purposes — including an autopsy and the handing over of the body.

Initially, police suspected that he might have been a robber, who attacked the patrolling team along with two accomplices. However an officer said that circumstantial evidence suggests that they were "more than robbers".

"Small groups facilitate the Death Eaters who 'strike' and generate funds by robbing people and stealing vehicles. It is possible that the groups were waiting to steal a vehicle or rob someone," police officials said.

The other two gunnies escaped and are still on the lam, police said, adding that the presence of terrorist groups and their controllers in the area is a possibility.

Liveblogging Operation Protective Edge: Day 11
[IsraelTimes] As Israel moves deeper into Gazoo, rioters attack consulate in Turkey

Large numbers of troops tackling Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, tunnels, infrastructure, terror operatives; 18,000 more reservists to be called as PM says campaign may expand further.

The Times of Israel is liveblogging events as they unfold through Friday, the eleventh day of Operation Protective Edge. On Thursday night, Israel launched a major ground offensive on Hamas in Gazoo, initially focused on Hamas's under-border tunnels, after a day of ceasefire efforts in Cairo. The land operation was approved unanimously by the Israeli security cabinet. Hamas, which failed with a pre-dawn terror attack from a tunnel near a border kibbutz, and fired rockets into Israel throughout the day, is vowing that Israel will pay dearly for sending in its troops.

Hamas officials in the Gazoo Strip say 243 Paleostinians have been killed and 1,850 injured since Israel commenced Operation Protective Edge.

#2  13:06 IDF blowing up tunnels throughout Gaza
IDF forces reportedly blow up multiple tunnels in the areas in which troops are operating. Helicopter gunships are firing missiles at tunnel openings and at anti-tank and rocket launching cells in the Strip.

A mosque containing a large cache of explosives was also attacked by IDF forces, the army says.

The fighting is currently going according to prepared battle plans, officials say.

More on the tunnels in subsequent posts.

#3  The U.S. needs to cut off funding to the Palestinians. It is stupid to continue funding them since the money is being used to promote terrorism. We are playing into their game. We are not going to win their hearts and minds. They are not going to love us. Hamas doesn't give a fig about the citizens in Gaza; they are simply using them for propaganda purposes. The more dead Paleos, the better it is for Hama's propaganda grist mill. Photos of collateral damage are fed into their grist mill and shown across the world. It is cruel and vicious--the purpose is to turn world opinion against Israel; it is to turn the victim into the aggressor. The end game is to pave the way for the destruction of Israel. When you think Hama, also think Iran--the real Satan.

#9  steve,

apparently the idf does not use liquid flammables in tunnel detonation, perhaps because its a problem to carry around

based on video, they place solid pressure trigger explosives in the tunnel and fire an explosive into the tunnel, which sets off other booms; many times there are secondary explosions as paleo stuff detonates

Three Arabs Arrested For Assisting Terror
[Ynet] A police front man announced yesterday that three Arabs, residents of East Jerusalem in their early 20's, were tossed in the clink

on charges of violation of the directive to prevent terrorism after they filmed the falling of rockets on Ashdod and broadcast the locations of the hits, and by doing so assisted the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, in their terror efforts.

The three work at a construction site in Ashdod in which the very tall 'K Tower' is being constructed. The building has a commanding view the entire city. When rockets were fired at the city a few days ago one of them filmed the location of where the rockets hit.

Source: IDF Units Operating In Gaza Since Op Began
[Ynet] Israeli navy, Shayetet 13 launch more than 20 missions against rocket-launching positions, including ground operations.

For the past nine days — the entire duration of Operation Protective Edge — the IDF's special units have been operating on the ground in Gazoo. Part of that activity was revealed when Shayetet 13 soldiers were maimed last week, but most of the operations remain under the fog of war.

Israeli Navy operations included dozens of Shayetet fighters, both regular servicemen and reservists who were called up. A senior source in the navy said that the Shayetet soldiers were targeting murderous Moslems who were protecting a long-range rocket launcher, from which salvos were fired on Haifa and the Tel Aviv metropolitan area.

The Israeli Air Force destroyed launchers hidden in an orchard near a Gazoo beach, while the Shayetet fighters clashed with the terrorists.

"They were observing us and we were observing them. The festivities were from short range and included the (terrorists) throwing bombs on our soldiers," said the source.

"On their side were many casualties, including six deaths. The aim of the operations is to feel exposed 360 degrees, from every direction."

The Israeli Navy has recorded more than 20 attacks on terror targets from the sea during Operation Protective Edge, including on the homes of senior Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, members, terrorist command and control centers, and Hamas military bases as well as the Gazoo coasties police.

The navy has dozens of sea-faring vessels operating near the shores of the Gazoo strip, including missile boats and patrol boats. "We are prepared for a situation of anti-tank missile fire towards our vessels and are also taking into account the possibility of shore-to-sea missiles," said the source.

The troops were part of the force that killed the five Hamas commandos which tried to infiltrate into Israel by sea last week.

The senior navy source revealed the details of the operation. "We waited for them with heavy military presence and using many observation measures. A tank and a Dvora-class patrol boat participated in thwarting the attack."

"They dove about two kilometers using diving gear until they reached the beach, ran for a nearby bush, and until we locked on to them and isolated the area — we operated slowly and safely to prevent a two-sided incident."

According to the source, in comparison to previous operations undertaken by Hamas, the terrorist organization drew several lessons from the past and improved its capabilities.

IS Jihadists Seize Syria Gas Field near Palmyra
[An Nahar] Jihadists on Thursday seized a gas field in the desert region of Palmyra, in central Syria, a monitoring group and the governor of Homs said.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Islamic State (IS) fighters on Thursday morning attacked the Shaar gas field, east of the ancient site of Palmyra, killing 23 guards.

"The fate of 340 National Defense Force (paramilitary) members, guards, engineers and employees who were in the field, is unknown, as they were either taken prisoner, maimed or captured during the operation," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

The operation, he added, was the Islamic State's "most important so far against the government" of Syria's Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...

Abu Bilal, an activist linked to IS in Homs province, also reported the attack.

Twelve members of IS had been slain in the fighting, he said, adding that "dozens" were killed on the government side.

"There was a martyrdom (suicide) attack, and we took eight checkpoints before taking over the gas field," Abu Bilal said via the Internet.

Homs governor Talal Barazi also confirmed the attack.

"Armed men took control on Wednesday evening of the gas field, and we have lost contact with three technicians who were on the site," Barazi told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"The gunnies were present in the area beforehand, but they have now expanded their area of control with this new operation," he said.

"The army is trying to take it back. There is fighting in the area and government air strikes."

The Islamic State, which proclaimed a "caliphate" straddling Syria and Iraq last month, has in recent weeks taken over the entire countryside of oil-rich Deir Ezzor province.

Deir Ezzor borders Homs province as well as Iraq, where the jihadist group has spearheaded a major Sunni holy warrior offensive that has seen large swathes of territory fall out of the Iraqi government's control.

Lebanese, Syrian Charged with Belonging to the Islamic State
[An Nahar] Government Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr on Wednesday charged two incarcerated

men with belonging to the jihadist Islamic State group.

"Saqr charged a Lebanese and a Syrian with belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
for the purpose of carrying out terrorist operations," LBCI television reported.

LBCI remarked that the maximum punishment for such a crime is death penalty.

Saqr referred the case to the acting military magistrate, according to the same source.

Military Examining Magistrate Imad al-Zein issued last Thursday an arrest warrant against a soldier who had defected from the Syrian army on charges of belonging to the same terrorist group.

The Islamic State is the latest and most powerful incarnation of what began as an al-Qaeda affiliate in Iraq.

The group is led by an ambitious Iraqi holy warrior known by his nom de guerre of His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
with a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head. After taking the reins in 2010, al-Baghdadi successfully transformed what had been an umbrella organization focused mainly on Iraq into a transnational military force.

It also drew the ire of many opposition fighters in Syria by focusing not on the fight against Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
, but rather on restoring a medieval Islamic state, or caliphate, in Iraq and Greater Syria, also known as the Levant.

The group is also referred to sometimes as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

On June 29, IS declared the establishment of a "caliphate," referring to an Islamic system of rule that was abolished nearly 100 years ago.

2 New Rocket Platforms Found near Tyre, 2 Suspects Arrested
[An Nahar] Two rocket launchpads were found Wednesday evening in the al-Hinniyeh plain, south of the southern city of Tyre, state-run National News Agency reported.

"The Lebanese Army has cordoned off the area," NNA added.

It was not immediately clear if the platforms contained any rockets.

MTV said "ready-to-launch" rockets were discovered as Voice of Leb radio (93.3) said the launchpads did not have any rockets on them.

On Tuesday night, unknown assailants fired a rocket from the southern region of Rashaya al-Fakhar towards Israel but it fell short and landed in Lebanese territory, according to NNA.

No Israeli response was recorded, but flares were fired over the Kfarshouba Hills amid heavy overflights by surveillance drones.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Lebanese Army's Intelligence Directorate jugged

two suspects for their involvement in firing rockets against Israel from the southern region of Tyre.

It identified in a statement the suspects as Paleostinian brothers Khalil and Hassan Kharraz, saying they confessed to firing rockets on July 13 and 14.

As Safir newspaper said on Wednesday that they are residents of the al-Rashidiyeh refugee camp. They were found to be members of an Islamist Paleostinian group, it added.

Informed sources told the daily however that they most likely acted on their own, without referring to the group and without political motives.

The sources said they believe several groups are behind the five rockets attacks which have targeted Israel from Leb since Friday.

The army also discovered a cache for rockets hidden in the suspects' pickup truck.

A Lebanese man had been arrested in connection with Friday's attack and he confessed that he fired a rocket towards Israel in solidarity with the Gazoo Strip.

The rocket attacks from the South started amid an Israeli assault on Gazoo, which entered Wednesday its tenth day, leaving at least 220 Paleostinians dead and 1,550 others maimed.
