Tech note
We went down again last night just before changeover. That was about ten minutes after I went to bed. The time turned out to be crucial. I was able (finally) to isolate the problem, which is a Linux kernel bug.

That's the good part. The bad part is that it looks like there are any number of things that might set it off. I'm guessing it's kernel-hardware specific, since other installs of the same release I've got show different bugs.

I've dumped two programs left over from when I was originally setting up the box. I want to back up the whole machine and do an upgrade, but I'll have to work up my nerve to do it. I may wait until it goes down again.

The previous box was ultra-stable. I used to reboot it every 120 days or so normally.

#2  Got paid today, Fred. Will send a check when I sit down to pay bills this weekend.

That said, A REMINDER TO ALL WHO BUY FROM AMAZON: When you want to buy something from Amazon, come to Rantburg first and click through to Amazon from this site (it's in the right sidebar, a couple-three jumps down from the top). That way, Fred gets a tiny portion of what you spend. If you buy a lot thru Amazon the way I do, I suspect it will help a bit.

Fred, you are a GOD. :-D

Yemen Army clashes with Al Qaeda militants, kills 16 30
[YEMENONLINE.INFO] The Yemeni Army repelled a dawn attack by Al Qaeda gunnies seeking to recapture a restive southern town in intense festivities that killed seven soldiers and 16 gunnies on Wednesday, security officials said.
A nice ratio... Did they get that by counting ears and dividing by two?
The fighting raged for nearly three hours on the fringes of the town of Azan in Shabwa province, the officials said.

Government warplanes came to the aid of the troops as they defended the town, bombing positions of the attacking bully boys, added the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The Azan clash comes amid an ongoing offensive by the army in Yemen's southern cities and towns, which has led to the killing and capture of dozens of Qaeda bad boyz.

Al Qaeda gunnies have been retreating from areas they held in the face of the offensive, which has focused mostly on Shabwa and the province of Marib, east of the capital, Sanaa.

The Defense Ministry said dozens of suspected gunnies have been killed or captured over the past three weeks, and that Yemeni troops and allied tribal fighters seized a string of Al Qaeda-held areas along a 60-mile stretch of highway snaking through the rugged desert mountains of the south, starting from the Mahfad region.

The US Embassy in Sanaa shut down its premises last week as a precaution against possible retaliatory attacks by bully boys.
A later Reuters article puts the corpse count at 30.
The difference possibly due to the fog of war or the number of whole ears found.

Al Qaeda group kills Defense Ministry aide in latest Yemen attacks
[YEMENONLINE.INFO] The fighting in the Gol al-Rayda and Azan districts of Shabwa province started early Wednesday morning and continued for hours, leaving 10 soldiers and 13 attackers dead. Military losses included General Mohsen Saeed al-Ghazali, an aide to Defense Minister Mohammed Nasser Ahmad, who just days ago survived an ambush while returning from an area in the south which the army has attempted to clear of al Qaeda elements.

Earlier this month, Yemen's army captured key districts in Abyan

The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. [The Peninsula] Pak troops yesterday foiled an attack on a NATO

supply terminal in the northwest, killing one attacker and forcing others to flee, officials said.

The attack was mounted in the Jamrud area of the Khyber tribal district that borders Afghanistan, said government official Ali Sher.

"The Death Eaters started firing on the terminal and tried to enter it," Sher said, adding that the attack involved up to 12 people armed with automatic weapons and mortars.

"The Frontier Corps retaliated and forced the Death Eaters to flee, leaving one dead body behind."

An intelligence official in Jamrud confirmed the attack.

Pakistain is a key supply route for the US-led mission in landlocked Afghanistan, particularly as NATO forces prepare to withdraw troops and equipment by the end of this year.

'Admit one son to madrassa or pay Rs0.4m'
[DAWN] The outlawed Death Eater group Lahskar-e-Islam (LI) has warned rustics in northwestern Bara district to admit at least one of their sons to "a madrassa of LI school of thought" otherwise the family elder would have to pay Rs0.4 million in compensation.
Such decisions a papa has to make: send the brilliant son, who is most likely to survive the ordeal until they send him off with a bomb attached to his belly, or send the one with the hare lip, club foot, and signs of blossoming schizophrenia with the warning that the imam likes to murder his best boys?
Local rustics and eye witnesses said that the Death Eater outfit had displayed wall posters in streets and bazaars in Nala Malikdin Khel area asking the locals to get at least one of their sons to the madrassa (Islamic seminary).

The posters also warned parents that children should be admitted only to the madrasas of Ishat-o-Tauheed and the admission in other madrassas of Deobandi, Barelvi or other school of thoughts would not be acceptable to them.

The posters, according to sources, had been issued on the directive of LI chief Mangal Bagh
...a former bus driver, now head of the Deobandi bandido group Lashkar-e-Islam and the Terror of Khyber Agency...
and have also warned that those who failed to admit their kids before Eid-ul-Fitr would have to pay Rs0.4 million to the Death Eater outfit.

Ayaz, a local rustics from Malikdin Khel confirmed that the pamphlets have been displayed all over in the area.

Another primitive Riaz Afridi said that the LI was again trying to gain ground and these posters show that they were using pressure tactics to get hold of the area.

The political administration officials of Bara said that they had also heard about such pamphlet in the area but had not found one yet, but the administration said it was investigating into the incident.

Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) MPA Nighat Orakzai also took up the issue in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
Assembly earlier on Tuesday.

She said that it showed the government's failure to protect the people's lives and they were left at the mercy of the bully boyz who are calling the shots.

"The government must stop the drama of talks and take concrete steps to stop the Death Eaters' onslaught," she added.

Two NPA militants killed in clash
Two suspected members of an arson unit of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in a clash with soldiers in the province of Misamis Oriental.

Military spokesman Lieutenant General Ricardo Rainier Cruz III said the clash took place late Monday moring in Gingoog City. He said the identities of the slain NPA militants are not known except that they were reported to be members of the NPA’s arson unit.

Cruz said the clash happened as troops were checking the reported presence of the NPA militants in the village of Balason. He said local residents reported that the NPA militants were extorting villagers and trying to get new recruits.
Seems counterintuitive to attempt both at the same time.

Two railway bridges bombed in southern Thailand
Two bomb explosions damaged railway bridges in Narathiwat province early Wednesday, temporarily halting rail services.

After the explosion at a bridge in Cho-airong district, local policemen rushed to the scene. An investigation found that the homemade bomb, built into a gas cylinder, weighed about 20 kilograms. The powerful blast damaged the railway bridge pier. Meanwhile, a bomb explosion in Ra-ngae district destroyed the railway bridge pier and some parts of the bridge. Fragments of a 50 kilogram bomb built into a gas cylinder were found scattered across the site.

Train services, both inbound and outbound to Su-ngai Kolok district, have been suspended for at least few days to make repairs.

Syria Rebels Detonate Tunnel Bomb under Idlib Army Base
[An Nahar] Islamist rebels detonated explosives planted in a tunnel under an army base in northwestern Idlib on Wednesday, killing or injuring dozens, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Britain-based group said the explosives blew up under a checkpoint inside Wadi Deif army base, which opposition fighters have been trying to capture for more than a year.

Video posted online showed a massive blast which hurled debris and soil dozens of meters (yards) into the air.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said there was no precise toll in the attack yet, but that "dozens of soldiers have been killed or injured."

The Islamic Front, a coalition of rebel groups, claimed the attack in a statement.

"The heroes of the Islamic Front, in coordination with the Furqan Brigade, blew up the Wadi Deif base... after digging a 860-meter tunnel packed with 60 tonnes of explosives," it said.

Wadi Deif is the one of the regime's last remaining strongholds in Idlib province, along with the nearby Hamadiyeh military base, which is also under rebel attack.

Last week, at least 30 Syrian soldiers were killed in a similar attack involving explosives planted in a tunnel under a checkpoint near Wadi Deif.

A rebel told Agence France Presse at the time that the tunnel had taken 50 days to dig.

Opposition fighters have also used the same tactic against facilities used by regime forces in the northern province of Aleppo.

A Syrian-incubated al-Qaeda work-alike that they think can be turned off if no longer needed to keep the Lebanon pot stirred.
member in Ein el-Hellhole near the southern city of Sidon on Wednesday evening sparked a heavy exchange of fire in the camp, which lead to the injury of one person.

"An elderly man was maimed in a heavy fire exchange in Ein el-Hellhole's vegetable market," al-Jadeed television reported.

MTV said that a bomb was hurled in the market and was followed by an exchange of gunfire.

"One person was reportedly maimed by gunshots," MTV noted.

The state-run National News Agency explained that after the news about the death of Fatah al-Islam official Alaeddine Ali Hujair broke out, tension prevailed in the camp's al-Fawqani area as shops and companies also closed their doors.

Hujair died of wounds he received in an armed clash between supporters of Fatah al-Islam and others who back Fatah last week.

On Monday, reports said that the Fatah al-Islam official had died, and following this inaccurate announcement, Hujair's supporters erupted into the streets and began firing gunshots into the air.

This soon escalated into the armed festivities which lead to the injury of seven people.

US names 2 Syria rebels 'global terrorists'
[The Peninsula] The US government officially designated two officials of rival jihadist groups in Syria as "global terrorists" Wednesday, warning other Syrian rebel groups to stay away from both men.

The US Treasury added Saudi-born Abd Al-Rahman Muhammad Zafir Al-Dubaysi al-Juhni and Iraq native Abd Al-Rahman Mustafa al-Qaduli to its list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists.

The two were cited for their ties to, respectively, Al-Qaeda operations in Syria, and Qaeda breakaway group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL).

Al-Juhni is part of a group of senior Qaeda operatives in Syria formed to attack Western targets outside the country and also to mediate tensions between ISIL and the Al-Nusra Front, the local Qaeda affiliate, the Treasury said.

Al-Qaduli is a senior ISIL official who joined Qaeda 10 years ago and previously worked for leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, formerly the Qaeda commander in Iraq, it said.

The designation aims to limit their access to financial and business networks by banning any American or American business from dealings with them and freezing any US assets.

Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen said the act sends a message to other Syrian rebels to not work with them

"We are very concerned about Al-Qaeda networks moving money and fighters to Death Eater groups in Syria," he said in a statement.

The action "sends a strong warning to the legitimate Syrian opposition and those who wish to support it that they must reject the attempts of Al-Qaeda, ISIL, and Al-Nusra to elicit support for their cause by preying on the sympathies of the international community for the plight of the Syrian people."
