Afghanistan
Gunmen kill abducted local election candidate in Afghanistan
[DAWN] An Afghan official says Taliban gunnies have killed nine people, including a candidate running for a seat in the provincial council, who had been kidnapped in northern Afghanistan.

The governor of Sar-e-Pul province says authorities received intelligence that the candidate, Hussain Nazari, was slain by his abductors.

Nazari was seized by the Taliban three days ago while traveling to the picturesque provincial capital.

Gov. Abdul Jabar Haqbeen said on Wednesday that Nazari and eight other people were killed. No group has grabbed credit.

Haqbeen says they recovered four bodies and one man who was maimed, while the five other bodies, including the candidate's, are in a remote area.

Haqbeen says authorities were told that Nazari and two others had their heads chopped off, but that could not be confirmed until the bodies are retrieved.

Africa North
3 Explosions Rock Central Cairo, Police General Killed
[AnNahar] Two bombs targeting security posts near Cairo University went kaboom! in quick succession Wednesday killing a police general, followed by a third blast as police and journalists gathered at the scene.

Witnesses said the blasts sent up a cloud of smoke and dust near the campus, the scene of repeated festivities in the past few months between Islamist students and police.

The third bomb struck close to the main gates, where police Sherlocks and journalists had gathered, causing no casualties.

The bombings were the latest in a spate of attacks against the security forces since the army overthrew elected Islamist president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
last July.

They came less than a week after the army chief who toppled Morsi, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, said he was leaving the military to stand in a presidential election set for May.

A fourth bomb placed in a car parked near the university was defused, security officials and state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
said.

The interior ministry identified the slain officer as Brigadier General Tarek al-Mergawi.

An assistant interior minister, Major General Abdel Raouf al-Serafi, and four other coppers were maimed.

"I was waiting for the bus when I heard two kabooms. There was dust in the air and coppers were screaming," said a witness, Sakta Mostafa.

A police general at the scene told Agence La Belle France Presse that the bombs were concealed in a tree between two small police posts.

A Cairo University student said he ran out of the campus after hearing the blasts.

"I found a lifeless man in plain clothes and a policeman bleeding from his leg," said the student, Amr Adel.

A senior detective, Mergawi would have been in civilian clothes.

Amateur footage posted on an Egyptian newspaper's website showed coppers running out from a cloud of smoke and dust sent up by the first kaboom.

The second bomb went off moments later.

Interim prime minister Ibrahim Mahlab led Mergawi's funeral procession, as coppers carried the coffin draped in a red shroud.

The government says bully boyz have killed almost 500 people, most of them coppers and soldiers, in attacks since Morsi's overthrow.

Most of the attacks have taken place in the lawless Sinai Peninsula but the jihadists have increasingly targeted police in the capital and in the Nile Delta to its north.

The government has blamed most of the violence on Morsi's Moslem Brüderbund, which it designated a terror group late last year even though the deadliest attacks have all been claimed by the al-Qaeda-inspired Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis (Partisans of Jerusalem) group, which is based in the Sinai.

The Brotherhood condemned the latest bombings, as it has previous attacks on the security forces, insisting it remained committed to peaceful protest.

It called for an investigation, urging people to "refrain from making accusations without evidence".

"Such acts will not deter us from continuing our peaceful march to achieve the objectives of our legitimate revolution," it said.

Even though Morsi and most of its top leadership are in jail, the Brotherhood has vowed to keep up its campaign for the reinstatement of Egypt's only freely elected president.

More than 1,400 people, mostly Islamists, have been killed since Morsi's overthrow.

Some of the Brotherhood's top leaders have sought refuge in London, where British Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
has ordered a probe into the group's activities.

Police have scored some successes in their fight against the jihadists, killing and capturing members of two major cells in the Nile Delta over the past two months.

One of the cells, belonging to Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, was implicated in a boom-mobileing at Cairo police headquarters in January.

According to a statement issued today in Abuja by Defence Headquarters and signed by its director of information, Major General Chris Olukolade, "Three of the four explosive-laden vehicles were demobilized by shots fired at them by soldiers at the checkpoint shortly before the kabooms that rocked the area".

Arabia
Saudi Death Sentence for Top Qaida Man 'Held for Decade'
[AnNahar] A Saudi court sentenced to death on Wednesday the "chief strategist" of a wave of al-Qaeda violence that erupted in the kingdom in 2003, a decade after his reported arrest.

Faris al-Zahrani had been in jug ever since his detention near the Yemeni border in 2004, the al-Madina newspaper reported on its website.

The official Saudi Press Agency gave neither his name nor the date of his arrest in the southwestern city of Abha, saying only that he had shown no remorse while in jug.

The trial, in which 16 co-defendants were also sentenced to prison terms of up to 20 years, was the latest in a series of prosecutions begun in July 2011 for alleged offenses committed during the peak of al-Qaeda violence in the oil kingpin between 2003 and 2006.

Saudi authorities had previously focused on efforts to reform those detained for "deviating" from officially sanctioned Islam by preaching jihad or holy war, boasting of successful results from its well-funded rehabilitation centers.

Throughout his trial, the chief defendant continued to defy the authority of the state and to defend the killing of security personnel as an act justified by his faith, SPA said.

He showed every sign that if released he would continue to propagate his ideas, it added.

"He was detained in a public park in Abha in the possession of weapons that he intended to use to kill coppers or any civilian who got in his way," it said of his original arrest, which dealt a heavy blow to the jihadist network in the kingdom.

The co-accused, whose arrest dates were also not specified, were convicted of charges including "arms possession, participation in acts of terror, forging of official documents and assisting terrorists."

Al-Qaeda's now slain historic leader the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now among the dear departed, though not among the dearest...
was Saudi-born and 15 of the 19 perpetrators of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States were Saudis.

Saudi authorities launched a massive crackdown on the jihadist network over the past decade that prompted many of its snuffies to shift base to neighboring Yemen.

The merged franchise they formed, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, is regarded by Washington as one of the jihadist network's most dangerous.

20 Dead as 'Qaida' Attacks Yemen Army Headquarters
[AnNahar] Al-Qaeda attacked a Yemeni army headquarters in a heavily patrolled district of Aden on Wednesday, sparking a shootout that killed 20 people, most of them krazed killers, officials said.

The building targeted is located in the supposedly tightly secured coastal district of Tawahi that hosts intelligence and political police headquarters, a naval base and a presidential residence.

"We have regained control of the situation," an army official told Agence La Belle France Presse, adding that the fighting went on for several hours.

Ten of the assailants were killed, along with a jacket wallah who detonated his explosives-laden car at an entrance to the base, the official said.

Six soldiers were killed and 14 maimed, while three civilians including a seven-year-old child were also among those who died, the official added.

The Death Eaters launched the attack on the northern side of the army headquarters, with some of them climbing a wall into the building as a car was blown up at a western entrance, the sources said.

Reinforcements from the 31st Armored Brigade stationed in Aden were dispatched to support the troops in Tawahi, a military official said.

No information was immediately available on the overall number of attackers.

The official Saba news agency quoted a security official as saying the incident was "a suicide terrorist attack by al-Qaeda".

"The guards at the HQ have foiled this cowardly attack" and government forces were "hunting down the attackers who fled after the assault," the official told Saba.

The brazen attack on such a highly protected area came despite the authorities having stepped up measures in recent weeks to contain a deadly wave of violence rocking the Arabian Peninsula country for years.

On March 8, President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi replaced interior minister Abdelqader Qahtan for failing to improve the "below-par" performance of the security forces.

Qahtan's successor, Abdo Tareb, ordered the dismissal of three security chiefs for failing to prevent a March 24 attack attributed to al-Qaeda on an army checkpoint in the southeastern Hadramawt province, in which 20 soldiers were killed.

Wednesday's assault is similar to one carried out by gunnies from al-Qaeda-affiliated group Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya, Tunisia and Yemen, with the Libyan and Tunisian versions currently most active...
on an army headquarters in Hadramawt in September, in which they took hostages and 12 people died.

The army recaptured the facility and freed the hostages after nearly four days of fighting.

In December, al-Qaeda Death Eaters launched a daylight assault on the defense ministry, killing 56 people.

The group has taken advantage of the weakening of the central government since 2011, as a result of a popular uprising that toppled president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
after 33 years in power.

Washington regards al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula as the global jihadist network's most dangerous affiliate and has stepped up drone strikes against the group in recent months.

Dagestan sentences terrorist to 13 years
Dagestan's Supreme Court has handed a 13-year sentence to an armed mutiny participant who was a member of gangs led by warlords Shamil Basayev and Khattab.

An Investigative Committee official said, "Abdulla Abdulkerimov was found guilty under Article 279 of Russia's penal code (armed mutiny), Article 208 (participation in illegal paramilitary formation) and Article 222 (illegal turnover of weapons)."

The investigator said Abdulkerimov was a member of illegal armed groups set up by Basayev and Khattab, which invaded Dagestan's Botlikh district from Chechnya in 1999, to establish an Islamic state. Ninety servicemen and police were killed in the fighting, and thousands of residents had to flee their homes.

The Investigative Committee said, "Abdulkerimov was hiding from Russian investigators for a long time. In 2004, he was detained and convicted in Azerbaijan for the crimes committed in that republic. He was extradited to Russia in 2012."

Investigative Committee officials say more than 58 gunmen who participated in the invasion are on the wanted list.

According to sources, almost four to six kilogram of kaboom was planted in a pipeline of a nearby footpath.

Rockets Strike Labweh, Militant Group Claims Responsibility
[AnNahar] Several rockets landed on Wednesday on residential neighborhoods of the eastern town of al-Labweh, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA did not specify the source of the assault and did not say whether the attack caused material damage or casualties.

The so-called Free Sunnis of Baalbek Brigade grabbed credit for the attack.

Last month, Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
gunnies and local Shiites closed off the town of Arsal's only road to the rest of Leb by erecting a sandbagged checkpoint.

The move came after residents of nearby Shiite areas blamed Arsal, a majority Sunni town, for rocket fire on their villages, including al-Labweh, and a deadly boom-mobileing in al-Nabi Othman.

The Lebanese army later reopened the Labweh-Arsal road after the blockade led to road closures across Leb.

Arsal's population sympathizes with Syria's revolt against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

, and the town has become a haven for refugees, including scores of maimed fighters in need of life-saving treatment.

Arsal is now home to 40,000 Lebanese and 52,000 Syrian refugees for whom the road is a vital lifeline.

Al-Labweh's residents meanwhile back Hizbullah, which is fighting alongside Assad's troops against the majority Sunni rebels.

33 Arrested in Tripoli as Troops Continue Implementing Security Plan
[AnNahar] The military institution announced on Wednesday arresting 33 people in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, as troops continued to implement the security plan in the North.

"The army has jugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
33 people, including 14 Syrians," the military institution said in an evening communique.

The statement added: "15 cycle of violences and 10 unlawful cars were also seized, in addition to weapons and ammunition."

The arrested men as well as the seized vehicles and weapons were handed over to the competent authority, the army added.

Earlier in the day, troops entered the neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh at dawn, as part of the security plan.

The army deployed in the various alleyways of the neighborhood, such as Starco, al-Hamawi, and the grocery market and Syria Street.

It carried out raids and removed various barriers as army helicopters overflew the area, the military said in a communique.

A high-ranking military source told MTV that none of the prominent leaders from the neighborhood will be arrested, but it did expect several suspects to be detained.

The military also set up checkpoints in the northern district of Akkar as part of the security plan, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi told al-Liwaa daily Wednesday that he is in contact with council of Mohammedan scholars in Tripoli in order to ensure the success of the security plan that kicked off on Tuesday with the army entering the Jabal Mohsen neighborhood.

"We are working for the sake of the city and we will not sacrifice it for various individuals," he added.

"We must have the courage to describe ourselves as failures should we fail in ensuring the security of Tripoli," he continued.

"Our residents and children have the right to live in peace and security," Rifi stressed.

The Army succeeded in arresting 75 suspects on the first day of the security plan, it said in a communique on Tuesday.

They included 27 Syrians and Paleostinians.

It also impounded 91 cycle of violences and six vehicles, as well as a number of weapons, ammunition, and military equipment.

It raided on Tuesday in the areas of the Hariri project, al-Baqqar, al-Naamani, Hayy al-Tanak, al-Amercan, Bab al-Hadid, internal markets, al-Qobbeh, and Bab al-Ramel.

Last week, the cabinet tasked the army and security forces with seizing stockpiled arms and controlling the security situation in Tripoli and the eastern Bekaa Valley in areas bordering Syria.

The plan took into consideration the recommendations of the Higher Defense Council.

Tripoli witnesses frequent gunbattles between two of the impoverished neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh, which is dominated by Sunnis who support Syrian rebels, and Jabal Mohsen, which is dominated by Alawites, who share the same sect as Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...

Clashes in Tripoli have left scores of casualties during the last round.

More than 1,400 Internal Security Forces members are cooperating with the army to implement the security plan to restore calm in Tripoli.

The army also raided and searched the house of Arab Democratic Party politburo chief Rifaat Eid
...secretary general of the Leb Arab Democratic Party, a Pencilneck regime front organization...
in Jabal Mohsen amid reports that he had fled to Syria.

14 Syrians Arrested in Arsal for Possessing Military Equipment
[AnNahar] The army on Wednesday incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
fourteen Syrian men in the northeastern town of Arsal on charges of possessing military equipment and entering Leb illegally.

"Fourteen Syrians were arrested at army checkpoints in Arsal today on charges of possessing military equipment and entering Lebanese territory illegally with fake IDs carrying Lebanese names," state-run National News Agency reported.

They were handed over to the Military Police in Ras Baalbek for further investigations, according to NNA.

The arrests come after the army intensified its security measures in the wake of a suicide kaboom that killed three of its soldiers in Arsal's outskirts.

Also in recent days, the Internal Security Forces seized several stolen cars in the town, some of them at refugee camps.

[AnNahar] Several dead bodies have been found in different regions across the Bekaa in recent days.

Khalil Mustafa's dead body was discovered on Wednesday afternoon on the Nahle-Baalbek road in the Bekaa, radio Voice of Leb (93.3) reported.

"The Lebanese national was shot in the head," VDL said, adding that the Criminal Evidence Department has opened a probe in the incident.

The state-run National News Agency noted that Mustafa was killed by a gunshot from a hunting rifle, remarking that the weapon was found next to his dead body.

Also on Wednesday, the body of Suleiman Abdullah al-Hujairi was found on the Joumana road in the northeastern town of Arsal.

"Al-Hujairi was targeted with gunshots and was found inside his Mercedes car," the NNA said.
