#5  Goldie Hawn: she had that routine in "Laugh-in" where she would start a sentence, then start another without finishing the first, then start another...

What was really freaky was that I could understand what she was "saying". Made perfect sense to everyone else around me after I explained it, but by then, four or five gags would have gone by...

Afghanistan
Gunmen Kill Judge and Bodyguard
[Tolo News] Unknown gunnies in cycle of violences rubbed out a judge of Karokh district of western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
and his bodyguard early Monday, local officials said.

The attack on Qazi Abdul Latif and his bodyguard took place in Angeel district of the province, said Abdul Raouf Ahmadi, the front man for the police chief.

"He was on his way to the office and unknown gunnies rubbed out him and his bodyguards," he said.

The police have started investigations about the incident.

No group including the Taliban has grabbed credit for the incident.

The Taliban and other forces of Evil frequently target Afghan officials with links to the government.

'7 Dead' as Car Bomb Hits Convoy of African Union Troops in Somalia
[An Nahar] A convoy of the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
's AMISOM force was targeted by a boom-mobile just outside the Somali capital on Monday, witnesses and a Somali army source said, though it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.

Contacted by Agence La Belle France Presse, a front man for the Shabaab Islamist group said the group carried out the attack, saying it killed seven people, including three foreigners.

The attack took place near a checkpoint on the road linking Mogadishu and the town of Afgoye, "where a jacket wallah rammed his car into an AMISOM convoy," witness Abdulahi Mohammed said.

"There was a heavy kaboom at the Alamada area... , we don't know about the casualties but I saw military ambulances rushing to the scene," he said.

A Somali military official, Omar Adan, confirmed the attack, but declined to give the number of casualties. He however blamed gunnies from the Shabaab, which have multiplied attacks in the Somali capital since the start of the year.

"Al-Qaeda linked bad boys, who have lost ground, are attempting desperate attacks," Adan said.

On Saturday, a boom-mobile went off in central Mogadishu near a hotel popular with government officials and businessmen, injuring at least one person, though no claims were made for the attack.

In February alone, major attacks in Mogadishu have included a boom-mobile at the gates of the airport, a major suicide kaboom on the presidential palace and a boom-mobileing on a cafe close to the intelligence headquarters.

Hardline Shabaab turbans once controlled most of southern and central Somalia but withdrew from fixed positions in Mogadishu two years ago.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
guerrilla units stage regular deadly attacks in the capital, and also grabbed credit for last year's deadly attack in neighboring Kenya, when commandos stormed the upmarket Westgate mall, shooting shoppers and hurling grenades.

Government and AU troops have also come under repeated hit-and-run attacks in rural areas surrounding the settlements they capture from the Shabaab.

Tunisia police raid kills three 'terrorists': Ministry
[Al Ahram] Tunisian security forces on Monday killed three suspected jihadists implicated in attacks last months that left four people dead, including two coppers, the interior ministry said.
Special police units surrounded the house of a "takfirist"
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
, or Mohammedan bad boy, in the northwest Jendouba region near the Algerian border at around 0200 GMT, ministry front man Mohammed Ali Aroui told news hounds.

"The terrorist group threw a grenade at the agents... and an exchange of fire followed between the security forces and these members of a banned movement," he said, alluding to the radical Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya, Tunisia and Yemen, with the Libyan and Tunisian versions currently most active...
.

Three forces of Evil were killed in the clash, "one of whom was very dangerous," and two police agents were maimed.

Two of those killed were Tunisian and the third was foreign, possibly Algerian, Aroui said.

Six others, including women, were tossed in the clink
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!

Oil tanker heading back to Libya after capture by US forces
[Libya Herald] The tanker Morning Glory, which illicitly loaded oil from Sidra port, is now under control of US forces and is on its way back to Libya after being boarded by Navy SEALs in the early hours of this morning.

"No one was hurt tonight when US forces, at the request of both the Libyan and Cypriot governments, boarded and took control of the commercial tanker Morning Glory, a stateless vessel seized earlier this month by three armed Libyans," Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said.

The captain of the ship had also requested assistance, an American official told the Libya Herald. "The Master (Captain) stated that the vessel had been boarded by force and that the crew was in danger and requested US assistance," he said.

The Morning Glory was sailing in international waters off the coast of Cyprus when it was boarded, and was carrying an illegal shipment of oil loaded from the Sidra oil export terminal, which is under the control of federalists led by Ibrahim Jadhran. The vessel was also no longer registered to any country -- a legal requirement under international maritime law -- after being stripped of its right to sail under the North Korean flag.

The operation was conducted by a team of Navy SEALs attached to Special Operations Command Europe and operated from the guided missile destroyer USS Roosevelt, Washington said. The USS Roosevelt served as command control for the operation and provided helicopter support.

The Morning Glory is now en route back to Libya, the US official said. It is not known at which port the vessel will dock.

Bomb at Military Academy in Libya's Benghazi Kills 7
[An Nahar] A boom-mobile Monday targeting a military academy in Libya's restive eastern city of Benghazi killed at least seven soldiers and maimed 12, military and hospital sources said.

Benghazi, cradle of the 2011 uprising that toppled veteran Libyan dictator Muammar Qadaffy
...The late megalomaniac dictator of Libya, admired everywhere for his garish costumes, funny hats, harem of cutie bodyguards, and incoherent ravings. As far as is known, he is the only person who's ever declared jihad on Switzerland...
, has seen near-daily attacks on security and other targets in recent months as the weak Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
government struggles to rein in former rebel brigades turned militias.

The medical center in Benghazi said "seven bodies have arrived at the hospital in addition to an undetermined number of human remains," updating a previous toll.

A hospital front man said 12 people were maimed in the bombing, including six at death's door.

A military source said the car parked in front of the academy blew up as soldiers emerged from an awards ceremony for army promotions.

As with previous attacks, it was not clear who carried out the bombing and there was no claim of responsibility.

10 Egyptians Jailed over Anti-Constitution Vote Protest
[An Nahar] Ten Egyptians, including a journalist working for a Moslem Brüderbund newspaper, were each sentenced on Monday to a year in jail for protesting against a constitutional referendum, judicial sources said.

Egypt adopted in January a new constitution after the previous one, approved during the presidency of Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
, was suspended when he was ousted last July.

The 10 defendants were found guilty of "attempts to derail the constitutional referendum" held on January 14 and 15, and "disturbing public order," the sources said.

Journalist Samah Ibrahim was tossed in the slammer
You have the right to remain silent...
while covering a demonstration by supporters of Morsi, Egypt's first elected and civilian president who ruled for a year before his overthrow.

That demonstration in Cairo called for a boycott of the referendum, as Morsi's supporters refused to recognize the military-installed government that promised a "democratic transition" following his ouster.

Since the ouster of Morsi, the authorities have launched a relentless crackdown on his supporters and his Moslem Brüderbund movement.

Amnesia Amnesty International says more than 1,400 people have been killed in the crackdown and thousands more tossed in the clink
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
.

The Moslem Brüderbund itself has been designated "terrorist organization" and participating in any of its demonstrations is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Several television channels linked to the movement have already been shut down, while its mouthpiece Al-Horreya wal Adala where Ibrahim worked has been banned.

Deadly Sectarian Violence Cripples Algeria Desert City
[An Nahar] Daily life has ground to a halt in Ghardaia, a picturesque Algerian city on the edge of the Sahara turned into a ghost town by a wave of sectarian violence.

The UNESCO world heritage site, some 600 kilometers (370 miles) south of Algiers, has been rocked since December by festivities between the Chaamba community of Arab origin and the majority Mozabites, indigenous Berbers belonging to the Ibadi Mohammedan sect.

The oasis settlement, with a population of 90,000, was a scene of desolation on Monday, with the normally bustling market square empty and charred shopfronts bearing witness to last week's unrest.

Security forces patrolled the streets following the deployment of extra personnel, and after Algeria's newly-appointed premier Youcef Yousfi visited on Sunday in a bid to defuse the situation.

The latest violence erupted after hundreds of Mozabites who had fled during the initial unrest returned to their houses to find many of them destroyed or badly damaged, according to various local sources.

Three young Chaambas were killed on Saturday night, in circumstances that remain unclear, and another 190 people maimed, including 29 members of the security forces, according to medical sources.

Thousands took part in a funeral procession for the three men, with some carrying green caskets with the bodies wrapped in white shrouds and others holding a large Algerian flag.

The imam leading the service pleaded for tolerance, calling for "unity in defense of the country" and urging the community not to take Dire Revenge™.

Five people were killed in the previous wave of violence between the rival communities, between December and February.

Hamou Mesbah, a senior member of the opposition Socialist Forces Front (FFS), on Saturday described the center of Ghardaia as a "ghost town," saying that Mozabites living in mixed neighborhoods whose property had been torched were still waiting to recover whatever belongings they could.

Some of the burnt-out shops belonging to members of the Chaamba community were still smoldering on Sunday night, despite the efforts of the local fire service.

Hadj Mabrouk Zahouani ran the well-known store "Rahala" ("Journey" in Arabic), which opened its doors in 1950 but was left in ruins by last week's violence.

Before the unrest customers would come from all across the Algerian desert to purchase his wares, which ranged from kitchen dishes to traditional clothes and footwear.

"I didn't close my shop until the riots began (in December), and when things calmed down I reopened. This time I have lost the shop and its contents," Zahouani told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The total damage from the latest violence is difficult to evaluate, but Bahmed Babaoumoussa, a member of the committee for Thenia neighborhood, put the cost of the losses there alone at more than four million euros.

The shops along the town's main street, most of them Arab, were all shuttered Monday.

"The Mozabites don't live in the town center but they do have shops here," said Moussa, a postman in his 30s.

On Monday those shops were easy enough to identify, whether by the police guards deployed outside them or the hostile messages scrawled on their walls, such as: "This is a Mozabite shop," and "Get out."

The two communities have coexisted for centuries, but as elsewhere in the region, limited economic opportunities, despite the proximity of Algeria's vast oil and gas wealth, have aggravated social tensions.

Trade has always been Ghardaia's economic mainstay, and one police officer posted on the deserted main street said he couldn't imagine the town without its shops and bustling business.

For 30 years tourism has flourished here, he said, driven in particular by demand for the jewelry and carpets typical of the area, which is also famous for its ksour, or traditional villages.

Saleh Echeikh, a professor at Ghardaia University, blamed the communal violence on a "third party," accusing criminal gangs linked to theft and drug dealing of instigating the festivities.

"They have forced the shops to shut and brought commercial activity to a standstill by all their acts of aggression," he said.

But others, particular members of the Chaamba community, dismiss this argument.

"Drugs circulate even more in the main cities and towns along the coast. So why aren't they going up in flames?" one man asked.

Pentagon: US Navy Seals take control of rogue Libya oil ship
[MAANNEWS.NET] US Navy Seals boarded and took control of an oil tanker that had loaded crude at a rebel-held port in eastern Libya and escaped to sea, the Pentagon said Monday.

No one was hurt "when US forces, at the request of both the Libyan and Cypriot governments, boarded and took control of the commercial tanker Morning Glory, a stateless vessel seized earlier this month by three armed Libyans," Pentagon press secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement.

The operation was approved by President Barack Obama
I am not a dictator!...
and was conducted in the early hours of Monday "in international waters southeast of Cyprus."

The Morning Glory "is carrying a cargo of oil owned by the Libyan government's National Oil Company. The ship and its cargo were illicitly obtained from the Libyan port of al-Sidra," the statement read.

The US Seals operated from the USS Roosevelt, a guided missile destroyer, which "provided helicopter support and served as a command and control and support platform."

Sailors from another destroyer, the USS Stout, boarded the tanker and prepared to sail it to an unnamed port in Libya, the statement read.

The Morning Glory, which last week slipped through a Libyan naval blockade of the eastern port of Al-Sidra -- controlled by rebels seeking autonomy from the authorities in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
-- reportedly loaded some 234,000 barrels of crude.

In Nicosia, the Foreign Ministry said Monday that the tanker had been immobilized in international waters southeast of Cyprus since Saturday.

"Close to midnight on Sunday, the Cypriot authorities were aware of it moving in a westerly course, always within international waters," said the ministry.

Cypriot vessels "were deployed in monitoring the tanker's course. The vessel stopped once more 18 nautical miles south of Limassol," a city in southern Cyprus.

However the tanker did not ask for authorization to moor in a Cypriot port.

Soon after Cypriot officials were notified that the tanker "was placed under the control of the US Navy and is being escorted by US Navy vessels on a westerly course."

While the statement says nothing about Cyprus asking US forces to intervene, the ministry previously said that Libya had asked for help in the return of the stolen oil, and that Nicosia was monitoring the tanker's whereabouts.

The Morning Glory originally was a North Korean-flagged ship, but Pyongyang on Wednesday denied any responsibility.

The ship was operated by an Egypt-based company that was allowed to temporarily use the North Korean flag under a contract with Pyongyang, North Korean state news agency KCNA said.

Pyongyang had "cancelled and deleted" the ship's North Korean registry, as it violated its law "on the registry of ships and the contract that prohibited it from transporting contraband cargo."

The loading of the Morning Glory and its escape to sea marked a major escalation in the struggle between Tripoli and the rebels, and triggered the ouster Tuesday of liberal-backed premier Ali Zeidan, who fled the country.

Zeidan, an independent, proved incapable of bringing to heel the former rebel militias who have carved out their own fiefdoms since the 2011 uprising that toppled the dictatorship of Muammar Qadaffy

Peacekeepers Seize Large Weapons Cache in C. Africa
[An Nahar] African peacekeepers on Monday announced the seizure of a large weapons cache near Bangui airport in the capital of the strife-torn Central African Republic.

"This is an important arsenal that would be enough to keep a large part of Bangui under siege," said a source in the MISCA force who asked to remain anonymous.

He said Chadian soldiers found the weapons during an operation lasting several hours late last Thursday, acting on a tipoff from local residents.

The haul included more than 10,000 rounds of 12.7 mm bullets, two anti-air missiles, three rocket-propelled grenades, six mortars, around 50 assault rifles and a score of anti-personnel mines.

"We are unsure of the origin of the arsenal," the MISCA source said.

Again Boko Haram Kills Two - Sets Churches, Houses Ablaze
[ALLAFRICA] Maiduguri -- Suspected members of Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
snuffies have again invaded Pela Birni village of Hawul Local Government Area of Borno state, killing two residents before setting ablaze two churches and many residential houses ablaze.

Pela Birni is one of the populated and remote village under Kwajjafa District in southern Borno with Christian domination, and about few kilometres drive to Garkida town of Adamawa state.

Witnesses said, the gunnies who came to the village at about 10pm on Sunday with sophisticated weapons opened fire on their targets thereby displacing hundreds of residents who are now taking refuge around the mountainous areas of Kwajjafa District and it's environs.

Mallam Musa Anjili Pela Birni in a telephone call to our Correspondent said, he narrowly escaped being killed by the attackers, as the house he was sleeping in was also set ablaze.

"The gunnies invaded our village at about 10 o'clock in the evening on Sunday, they started shouting God is Great. In some houses, they did not shoot at the residents but ordered them to vacate their houses and set them ablaze, saying we are here for God work".

Another Resident who did not want his name mentioned in the print told our Correspondent that most of the neighbouring houses near the Church of Brethern, (EYN in Hausa) were set ablaze including the church, while two people bit the dust, as well as many sustained injuries.

He said, the gunnies who were large in number carrying AK47 rifles, petrol bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices ( IED's ) had a field day and wrecked havoc on innocent poor civilians.

The Chairman of Hawul Local Government Area, Dr. Andrew Usman Malgwi confirmed the incident, lamenting that the rate at which suspected Death Eaters are holding people to ransom in Borno state and other states in the north east is worrisome, and calls for serious prayers from all and sundry.

8 Boko Haram terrorists killed in ambush
[PMNEWSNIGERIA] Nigerian troops operating in the North-East have ambushed a group of hard boyz on a mission to attack Goniri Community in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe state.

Maj.-Gen Chris Olukolade, Director of Defence Information and Coordinator, Joint Information Centre Counter Terrorism Campaign in an update said that the mission failed as the hard boyz were ambushed by troops on patrol who were already alerted on the their intention.

"Troops are still in pursuit of the fleeing terrorist elements after the encounter which resulted in some casualties on both parties.

"Rockets and machine guns were freely used by the hard boyz who eventually lost over eight of their fighters with several others maimed.

" Arms were also captured from the hard boyz while others fled.

" The troops, however, lost a soldier while an officer was seriously maimed in the encounter, '' he said.

Goniri is not far from Buni-Yadi where the hard boyz killed school children recently.

The director also said that the troops, operating around Gamboru Ngala and Dikwa Local Government Area towards the borders of Chad and Cameroun, were busy throughout the weekend.

He said that the troops were recovering weapons hidden by hard boyz who were dislodged from the area.

"Assisted by captured terrorists, the troops were led to the sites where arms have been hidden in farms and cemeteries. The cordon and search of the entire area is still in progress," he said.

Cameroon Blames Boko Haram for Attack Near Kousseri
[BUSINESSGHANA] Cameroon says the Nigerian Islamic sect Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
is suspected in an attack on one of its markets near Kousseri - with at least one soldier killed. A similar attack occurred March 9 in the same area. The latest incident also provoked panic in a convoy of guarded Chadian refugees who had fled sectarian violence in the Central African Republic.

Residents say the attackers entered Cameroon through the mostly non-existent borders and shot at soldiers Thursday in a market near Kousseri, a town close to Cameroon's borders with Nigeria and Chad.

"Two Boko Haram people came to the market on a cycle of violence in broad day light," eyewitness Mahamat Djibril, a businessman, told VOA. He said he thinks they shot and killed several soldiers.

The governor of the Far North Region, Awah Fonka Augustin, also said he thought Boko Haram was involved.

"There was a confrontation between Boko Haram and soldiers that were present," he said. The governor says the town has returned to normal and he called on the population to be calm, saying the military is there to protect their safety.

Minister of Communications Issa Tchiroma Bakari said the attack was the work of foreign Death Eaters from a bordering country that is experiencing what he called a "religious crisis." But he did not specifically name Boko Haram.

He called on nearby countries to respect Cameroon's peaceful position.

He said Cameroon is a country where priests and imams meet for ecumenical church services and this is an asset.

Boko Haram says it is fighting to create a strict Islamic state in the mainly Moslem north of Nigeria. The shadowy group is blamed for thousands of deaths since 2009.

Cameroon is caught in between Nigeria's violence-plagued north and the sectarian conflict engulfing its eastern neighbor, the Central African Republic.

The shooting incident near Kousseri created panic among some 300 Chadians who fled the C.A.R. and were passing through Cameroon on their way back home.

Said Abdoul was in the convoy. He tells VOA the Chadians they are afraid to continue their journey from the town of Ngaoundere.

"It is dangerous to leave Ngaoundere" he said, "because we hear that Boko Haram groups are around and can kill us."

Last year Boko Haram kidnapped a French family and a priest in northern Cameroon.

Concerns have recently surfaced that Boko Haram may be using neighboring nations as safe havens from which to launch attacks.

Earlier this month, Cameroon strongly denied
No, no! Certainly not!
it was allowing its territory to be used as a training ground for terrorist groups, including Boko Haram.

Gunmen Kill 2 Soldiers in Yemen Ambush
[An Nahar] Gunmen in Yemen's southeastern Hadramawt province killed two soldiers in an ambush on an army patrol on Monday, a security official said.

"Unknown gunnies fired rocket-propelled grenades at an army vehicle" in the town of Shehr killing both soldiers on board, before fleeing, the source said.

Yemen has seen regular attacks on its security forces usually blamed on the local franchise of Al-Qaeda that remains active in the south and east despite several military operations and U.S. drone strikes against it.

at the U.S.-Canada border in Washington for allegedly trying to aid al-Qaeda in a plot to attack a Southland subway.
Nicholas Teausant, 20, of Acampo, Calif., was charged Monday with attempting to provide material to support a foregoing terrorist organization, the U.S. District Attorney's Office said.

Teausant was arrested at the Canadian border "with the intent of continuing to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, a foreign terrorist organization more widely known as al-Qaeda in Iraq," officials said.

He allegedly began planning the attack late last year with the intent of carrying it out with the use of an unknown type of explosive on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, a complaint said.

Teausant is expected to make his initial appearance Monday afternoon.

The army also said three other people "who are members of groups fighting in Syria have voluntarily handed themselves over to the border guards."

"The three men hold Jordanian nationality as well as the nationality of an Arab country," the army said in a statement, without giving details.

Southeast Asia
Retired policeman shot, burned in southern Thailand
A former special branch officer was gunned down yesterday and his body set on fire at a gas station he owned in Yala province.

Pol Sr Sgt Maj Ekapong Sakdayuth was attacked about in the early morning, according to witnesses. Two men arrived on a motorcycle and asked for fuel before shooting him in the head and chest. The killers then poured gasoline over Ekapong and set him on fire. Before fleeing, the men walked into the victim's office and took a notebook computer, cash and a bag containing documents.

Police believe Ekapong’s death is linked to the insurgency. The attackers are thought to be members of a network led by Ubaidila Rommueli, a militant leader in Yaha district.

Meanwhile a new military unit, the “Budo Task Force”, has been created with a special mission to seek out and destroy militant hideouts in the Budo Mountains in the far South.

The move, which follows several raids on regional insurgent camps, is meant to prevent remote mountain areas from being used as training grounds by the separatist movement. Separatist groups have been using the mountain range as a major base to train militants for insurgency operations in both rural and urban areas, according to officials.

In August of last year security forces raided an insurgent camp in the mountains in Narathiwat province, and seized a quantity of ammunition and military-style camping equipment. The camp was the 11th discovered by the authorities since operations began in the mountains in March, 2012.

[AlArabiya] The attack was claimed by the jihadist al-Nusra Front in Lebanon, as well as by little known extremist Sunni Muslim group, Liwa Ahrar al-Sunna in Baalbek, who are a group opposed to Hezbollah's involvement in the Syrian war.

The blast occurred in the small town of Nabi Osmane, a Hezbollah stronghold.

Footage aired on the Hezbollah-owned al-Manar TV channel showed police cordoning off the area of the explosion and the twisted metal of a burnt-out car.

Syrian Army Readying Assault on Last Rebel-Held Areas in Qalamoun
[An Nahar] Syrian regime forces were on Monday readying an assault on the last rebel-held areas in the Qalamoun mountains, strategically located on the Lebanese border, after overrunning key opposition bastion Yabrud.

The capture of Yabrud on Sunday by Syrian troops and Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
fighters came shortly after the conflict entered its fourth year and marked a significant setback for the rebels as it severs their supply lines from across the border.

A security source in Damascus said the army would soon launch operations "in all areas where Death Eaters are to be found," using the regime's term for rebels battling to topple the Assad regime.

"The aim of the army operation is to entirely secure the border and to close all corridors to Leb."

The fighting along the border has sparked a fresh flight of civilians into Leb, which is already hosting nearly a million refugees, according to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

"So far 150 families have crossed the border since Yabrud fell," said the UNHCR's Lisa Abu Khaled.

"NGOs there were on standby so they have handed out food, blankets, etc, and the U.N. plans to register the arrivals this week."

Speaking to Agence La Belle France Presse via the Internet from the Qalamoun mountains, activist Jawad al-Sayed said all civilians were "evacuated" from Yabrud before the town fell, either to areas nearby or to neighboring Leb.

The road, he said, was dangerous, echoing reports from a day earlier that at least six people, including two children, were killed in air strikes as they fled for Leb.

"The situation of the civilians is very sad... So we have two options, either to go to Leb... or to stay here and resist," said Sayed.

Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
Monday after crossing the border illegally, said the Lebanese Army, adding that the men had in their possession an assault rifle, two pistols, cash and 30 mobile phones.

The fall of Yabrud came after five months of Syrian army operations in the Qalamoun region, and more than 30 days of heavy aerial bombardment of the town.

An AFP news hound entered Yabrud, north of Damascus, on Sunday after the army declared it had seized full control of the town.

Exhausted Syrian soldiers sat in the streets after seizing the town in fierce festivities with the support of battle-hardened Hizbullah fighters and pro-regime militiamen.

"It was a very difficult battle, possibly the most difficult we have faced," a soldier who identified himself as Abu Mohammed told AFP in Yabrud's central square between puffs from a water-pipe.

A source close to Hizbullah in Leb's Bekaa Valley told AFP that the victory came after a Hizbullah commando raid on Yabrud during which 13 rebel leaders were killed, leaving their forces in disarray.

Among those killed, said the source, was Abu Azzam al-Kuwaiti, a key commander in al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's official Syrian affiliate.

Yabrud was once home to some 30,000 people, including a Christian minority, and had been a rebel bastion since early in the Syrian uprising, which began in March 2011 in the form of peaceful protests.

6 Dead, 20 Hurt as Car Bomb Rocks Syria's Homs
[An Nahar] Six people were killed and 20 maimed Monday by a boom-mobile in a Homs district that is home to members of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

's Alawite sect, a monitoring group said.

"At least six people were killed, including women and kiddies, and 20 others maimed in a car kaboom on the Zahraa district," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based group with a network of contacts inside Syria.

State news agency SANA confirmed the report.

Homs has seen some of Syria's worst violence since the outbreak of the revolt against Assad three years ago, which was met by a brutal crackdown that spawned a civil war.

Only a handful of districts in the heart of the city remain in rebel control. Besieged for nearly two years, residents there survive on little more than herbs and suffer daily shelling.

Fighting raged further north in Syria's second city Aleppo between rebels and regime loyalists, as helicopters dropped a barrel bomb on an opposition area of the city, the Observatory said.

At least one man was killed by regime shelling, while festivities raged on the city's front lines, the group said, adding that 11 troops were killed in Monday's fighting.

The rebel Army of Mujahideen meanwhile detained prominent female activist Marcel Shehwaro and her friend Mohammad Khalili in Aleppo after she refused to don the Islamic headscarf, according to local activists.

The pair were taken to the Islamic court for questioning, with activists saying they would protest at the court to demand their release.

In Damascus, a mortar hit the central Umayyad square, killing one policeman, a security source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

North of the capital, the army backed by its Lebanese ally Hizbullah

shelled Flita, as it prepared an offensive against remaining rebel enclaves in the Qalamoun mountains near the Leb border.

The shelling comes a day after the fall of Yabrud, a key opposition bastion in the Qalamoun area.

Army Arrests 19 Syrians, 2 Lebanese in Wadi Khaled for Illegally Entering Lebanon
[An Nahar] The Lebanese army announced on Monday that it has jugged

a number of Lebanese and Syrians for attempting to illegally enter Leb.

It said in a statement that it detained the two Lebanese and 19 Syrians in the Wadi Khaled region near Syria in the North.

It confiscated in their possession a Kalashnikov rifle, two guns, and ammunition.

In addition, they were found in the possession of 30 mobile phones, a laptop, and different foreign currencies.

Investigations are underway with the detainees.

Since the eruption of the uprising in Syria in March 2011, security forces and the army have arrested a number of gunnies and individuals who sought to enter Leb illegally.

The un-demarcated Lebanese-Syrian border has facilitated the flow of gunnies to and from Syria.

Army Blows up Booby-Trapped Vehicle on Fakha-Ras Baalbek Road
[An Nahar] The Lebanese army blew up on Monday a booby-trapped vehicle found on the Fakha-Ras Baalbek road in eastern Leb, after firing an RPG-7 rocket on it, the military and the state-run National News Agency reported.

The army said in a communique that it blew up the car, which contained 170 kilograms of explosives, after the military expert inspected it and found difficulty in defusing it.

It launched an investigation to identify the suspects involved in the plot to blow up the vehicle, the communique added.

The driver of the silver Grand Cherokee has escaped, NNA said.

Reports said the vehicle had entered Leb with another Grand Cherokee that was used by a jacket wallah on Sunday in an attack in the town of al-Nabi Othman.

Later on Monday, MTV said a security cordon was imposed after another booby-trapped car was discovered in al-Labweh.

For its part OTV quoted al-Labweh municipal chief Ramez Amhaz as saying that a gray Grand Cherokee suspected of containing a bomb was being chased in al-Labweh's plain.

Sunday's car contained 100 kilograms of explosives, the army said.

Several people were killed and injured in the bombing.

A group calling itself the Baalbek Ahrar al-Sunna Brigade and al-Nusra Front in Leb made separate claims of responsibility for the bombing.

Voice of Leb radio VDL (93.3) said Monday's incident came as security forces and the army had information that six explosives-laden vehicles ready to be used for bombings had entered Leb from Syria.

Reports said the army carried out raids near Wadi al-Fakha to find four gunnies hiding there.

Soldiers also raided al-Nabi Othman and al-Labweh to find the booby-trapped vehicles, they said.

The bombing plots are seen in retaliation to the fall of Yabrud, a strategic Syrian town near the frontier.

Fighting Resumes in Bab al-Tabbaneh, Jabal Mohsen
[An Nahar] Clashes renewed Monday afternoon in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
after a period of cautious calm that had started in the morning following a night of intermittent fighting.

"Clashes renewed as four shells went kaboom! and volleys of machinegun fire were heard in the vicinity of Tripoli's Souk al-Qameh," al-Jadeed television reported.

"Two grenades went kaboom! in Bab al-Tabbaneh's Baal al-Darawish and were followed by heavy gunfire and the army is responding with anti-aircraft guns against the sources of fire," it said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the precinct house, Don Calamari's lawyer was getting even redder in the face...
LBCI television said festivities renewed between gunnies and the army in Tripoli's Syria Street which separates the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

"An army post was targeted with an RPG in Tripoli's al-Zahriyeh area near Barrad al-Bissar," MTV said.

State-run National News Agency said the army closed the international highway that links Tripoli to Akkar near the al-Qasr bakeries in al-Zahriyeh and prevented citizens from passing on it due to "the heavy sniper gunshots that were targeting the highway between the Abou Ali roundabout and the al-Mallouleh bridge."

"Raed Abou Halab was hit by a bullet to the head in Tripoli's vegetable market," Voice of Leb radio (100.5) reported.

The child Ammar Shrouq was also maimed in the vegetable market, according to the radio station.

In the morning, NNA said "cautious calm" prevailed in all hotspots as intermittent sniper fire was heard in mainly the rival districts of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

The army consolidated its deployment in the two areas and carried out patrols in the city's streets. It also erected checkpoints and checked the identities of passers-by.

Tripoli also witnessed limited traffic although most shops and businesses were open in areas far from the districts witnessing festivities, NNA said.

But classes in schools and universities remained suspended to preserve the security of the students, the agency added.

Tripoli Mufti Sheikh Malek al-Shaar rejected attacks on the army after a soldier was killed and several others were maimed in different armed assaults on military patrols over the weekend.

Al-Shaar told Voice of Leb radio (93.3) that armed forces should strike with an iron fist and arrest the suspects that are tampering with the security of the city.

The gunnies should be held accountable and the state should take the appropriate measures against them, he said.

At least 12 people have been killed and 96 others maimed in four days of festivities in Tripoli, according to NNA.

Overnight, the army announced the death of a soldier when a military patrol in the city was hit by an anti-tank grenade.

The latest fighting, which has also injured at least 50 people, broke out on Thursday after a Jabal Mohsen man was killed by unknown gunnies on a cycle of violence in central Tripoli.

Iran dismisses commanders over abduction of border guards
[DAWN] Iran's state TV says the military has dismissed several commanders from service and others face court proceedings for alleged negligence after last month's abduction of five Iranian border guards by Pakistain-based bully boys.

The Monday report on the state TV website quotes border guard commander Hossein Zolfaghari as saying that all five captive border guards are still unharmed.

The five were kidnapped in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan Province on Feb 6 and reportedly taken to Pakistain. Iran has said it sent officials to Pakistain to coordinate their release.

Tweets in the name of the Jaish al-Adl, said to be an armed Sunni group, have claimed credit for the kidnapping and posted pictures that purport to show the captives. Recent Tweets have threatened to kill the five.
