At least eight killed in Mogadishu suicide bombing
At least eight people were killed when a car bomb blew up near the national security headquarters in Mogadishu. The district commissioner of Mogadishu's Abdiasis district said, "A suicide car bomb targeted a national security car passing along these tea shops. We have carried seven dead civilians so far."

One witness counted eight dead people. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.

Mogadishu: Violent conflicts result in casualties
There were reports of physical conflict last night between Wadajir district’s military forces opposing armed militias at Bar Kontarol in the district and it caused casualties.

According to witnesses, they said that the fighting came after troops from the Somali government attacked Bad Kontarol where they suspected Al-Shabaab hiding there. It was reported that from the governments soldiers, only one was killed and led to the militia acquiring two automatic weapons.

Wadajir district administration in Banaadir whom we contacted, refused to comment on the fighting in the district. The military troops that attacked the militia themselves did not comment but rather kept it to themselves.
Awfully nice of them...

Explosion targeted at AMISOM in Mogadishu
The Shabelle reporter clearly speaks the good English. But I will admit his English is better than my Somali.
According to witnesses that reported to Shabelle, they described that a bomb was targeted at AMISOM soldiers in the Arafat neighbourhood in Yaaqshiid district.

The explosion hit one of the AMISOM convoys although it is not known whether casualties were sustained. After the blast, AMISOM soldiers haltered the movement of public transportation and people on the road.

The explosion was among the latest acts of insecurity in the capital city in Mogadishu for whom responsibility was claimed by Al-Shabaab.

Unrest Foils Libya Poll rerun in Tuareg South, Jihadist East
[An Nahar] A second attempt to organize voting for a constituent assembly in a mainly Tuareg region of southwestern Libya and a jihadist bastion in the east failed Wednesday in the face of persistent insecurity.

The electoral commission said it would not make a third attempt to organize polling in the two areas and parliament would have to decide what to do about the resulting 11 vacant seats in the 60-seat assembly.

In the vast Ubari region, deep in the Sahara south of the capital, gunnies attacked polling stations and forced their closure, the commission said.

In the eastern city of Derna, a stronghold of jihadist groups opposed to the electoral process, security forces failed to deploy, forcing abandonment of the election rerun.

"Voting did not take place in 59 polling stations, including 13 in Derna and 39 in Ubari," commission member Khaled al-Saheli told a news conference.

Commission president Nuri al-Abbar said: "We sounded the alarm and warned the government and the General National Congress, but in vain."

Billed as a new milestone in the troubled transition from the 42-year dictatorship of Muammar Qadaffy
...a reminder that a single man with an idea can change an entire nation, usually for the worse...
, the election failed to generate much enthusiasm among voters.

Turnout in last Thursday's voting reached just 45 percent of the less than one-third of eligible voters who even bothered to register.

The figure was sharply down on the 2012 vote to the GNC, Libya's first freely contested election held amid the euphoria that followed Qadaffy's overthrow and killing the previous year.

Much of that excitement has dissipated amid frustration at the lawlessness of former rebel militias that have carved up a patchwork of fiefdoms around the country.

Another two seats in the assembly charged with drawing up a post-Qadaffy constitution, which had been reserved for the Berber minority, will also remain vacant after Berber groups called a boycott.

As a result, it will have just 47 of the 60 members it had been intended to.

Egypt sentences 26 to death for alleged Suez plot
The terrorist group was charged with planning attacks on ships passing the canal, security buildings, foreign tourists, Christians and police.

An Egyptian court sentenced 26 people to death over allegations of forming a terrorist group and targeting the vital Suez Canal water corridor.

Cairo Criminal Court issued its verdict on Wednesday. All defendants but one was tried in absentia.
So the trial was pretty much meaningless unless the Egyptian military ever gets their hands on the defendants...
The prosecutors charged the group with planning attacks on ships passing the canal last year, security buildings, foreign tourists, Christians and police.

An Al Qaeda-inspired group has claimed responsibility for a rocket-propelled grenade attack targeting the canal last year.

In 2012, an Egyptian court sentenced 14 militants to death on charges related to attacks on police and civilians in the volatile Sinai Peninsula in the aftermath of the 2011 uprising. Eight are in prison while the rest were tried in absentia. They allegedly belonged to the extremist Tawheed and Jihad group.
Ok, we've gone through all that, and I have absolutely no idea what group these miscreants-in-absentia belong to.

Gunmen Kill Security Officer in Yemen Restaurant
[An Nahar] A gunman killed a government security officer Thursday after following him into a restaurant in the coastal city of Mukalla and shooting him repeatedly, state news agency Saba quoted an official as saying. The gunman and an accomplice then escaped on a cycle of violence after Sergeant Rashad al-Kaldi was killed in what the security official called a "cowardly terrorist act."

Lee Rigby murderers get life sentences amid chaos
Drummer Lee Rigby's Islamist killers erupted into violence in an Old Bailey courtroom as they were sentenced for murder yesterday. Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale had to be manhandled out of court by security guards after being told by the judge that their crime was a "betrayal of Islam".

Adebolajo screamed at the judge as he was manhandled down the dock stairs but, in scenes lasting several minutes, his co-defendant was held to the floor and cuffed before being carried downstairs head first. Angered by the judges' comments about Islam, Adebowale stood up and shouted, "That's a lie. It's not a betrayal of Islam. You don't know what Islam is."

The struggle broke out as the murderer yelled: "I swear by Allah that America and Britain will never have any safety. Allahu akbar."

After the defendants had been removed the judge resumed his sentencing to give Adebolajo a "whole-life" tariff, meaning he will spend the rest of his life in jail. Adebowale was given life with a minimum term of 45 years.

Adebolajo, who wanted to be called Mujaahid Abu Hamza, was dressed in a black Islamic robe and refused to stand up in court. Lawyers for Adebowale, who was dressed in a black skull cap and black hooded top, referred to him by the name Ishmael Abdullah.

During their trial at the Old Bailey, Adebowale offered no evidence in his defense, but Adebolajo gave a rambling testimony during which he told the jury he loved al-Qaeda.
Even the folks at the Independent see these guys as stone-cold murderers...

#4  I was in Libya when the Rigby murder occurred and I had a chance to discuss it with several Libyan Islamic scholars. To a man, they all denounced the murder as non-Islamic and not according to teachings.

The problem is there are so many ignorant, illiterate followers of Islam who have never read the Quran they only go by what the Imam in their local Mosque says. If the Imam is a raving foaming barking dog mad nutjob fanatic, then those ignorant and illiterate will follow his teachings.

That's the main reason I have hope that Libya will not follow the path of Syria or Iraq. If a way can be found to keep the forces of darkness who operate under the supposed cloak of Islam from taking control of Libya. The country will eventually join the rest of the modern world and not be a haven for fanaticism and terror.

Iranian mortar shells fired into Pakistani territory
[DAWN] ranian border guards again fired mortar shells into Pak territory on Wednesday, a security official said.

The official who requested not to be named, told Dawn.com that Iranian border guards fired two rockets in Peshak area of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
's Panjgur district.

He said no fatalities were reported as a result of the mortar shells.

"They went kaboom! with a loud bang causing panic in the bordering town," said the official.

This incident comes three days after Iranian guards fired five mortar shells into the same border area on Monday.

No fatalities occurred as a result of that incident as well.

Iranian border guards have repeatedly violated Pak territory in the recent past.

A week ago, Pakistain and Iran decided to form a joint border committee to review border violations, illegal movement, infiltration and a number of other issues relating to the long border between the two countries.

A three day joint border commission meeting was held in Quetta a few days back to find common ground in order to ensure legal movement and avoid infiltration and border violations at the Pak-Iran border.

Chief Secretary Balochistan, Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad led the Pak side whereas Deputy Governor Sistan-Balochistan Ali Asghar Shikari led the Iranian delegation during the meeting.

The kidnapping of five Iranian border guards by Jaish ul Adl (Party of Justice) prompted the two countries to work together to ensure the recovery of the soldiers.

The Jaish ul Adl, a Sunni bad boy group, had grabbed credit for the kidnapping of the border guards.

Israel Tests anti-Missile System for Passenger Planes
[An Nahar] Israel has successfully completed tests of a new missile defense system for commercial aircraft and plans to start fitting it to its passenger fleet, the defense ministry said on Wednesday.

It said the automatic laser-based "SkyShield" system detects shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles and also scrambles their guidance systems, rendering them harmless.

"The tests, conducted in a test range in the south of Israel, were the most complex and sophisticated ever held in the state of Israel," the ministry said in a statement.

"The series of tests included a wide variety of threats that the SkyShield system would have to tackle in order to protect passenger aircraft".

It did not say when SkyShield would enter service.

Last August, the airport in the Israeli Red Sea resort town of Eilat was briefly closed over unspecified security concerns.

The town next to Egypt's troubled Sinai Peninsula has been the target of cross-border rocket attacks, and Israeli media said on Wednesday that SkyShield would be fitted to domestic flights going there as well as to international destinations.

In 2002, a flight of Israel's Arkia airline with 261 passengers on board came under attack from two shoulder-fired missiles as it took off from Mombasa, Kenya. They narrowly missed their target.

Two female defense volunteers shot in southern Thailand
Two female village defense volunteers were shot and wounded in Narathiwat province yesterday morning in what police suspected was part of the regional insurgency. The two were returning on a motorcycle from doing an errand when they were followed by two men on a motorcycle, before the pillion rider opened fire at them.

Earlier, a roadside bomb went off and hit an armored truck in which Chanae district chief Traitip Sakulpradit and five security volunteers were traveling. The 25kg home-made bomb, which left a 90cm-deep, 80cm-wide crater near the shrapnel-ridden truck, was detonated by a communication radio.

Al Nusra jihadists declare war on ISIS jihadists
By: Radwan Mortada

Published Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Al-Nusra Front has declared war on the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Abu Mohammed al-Golani gave ISIS five days to provide proof of its innocence regarding the killing of Abu Khaled al-Souri along with an ultimatum: either stop the fighting, withdraw apostasy edicts and return to the community or face a war, even in Iraq. Now all eyes are on the two groups as a violent confrontation might breakout between them at any minute.

Syria Ships Out Mustard Gas as Watchdog Urges Faster Action
[An Nahar] Syria shipped out a fourth consignment of chemical weapons for destruction Wednesday but the international watchdog urged swifter progress towards a missed turn-of-the-year deadline to surrender the most dangerous agents.

The mustard gas loaded onto a fat merchantman in the Mediterranean port of Latakia was one of five "priority chemicals" in Syria's arsenal which it was supposed to have handed over by December 31 under a disarmament deal approved by the U.N. Security Council last August.

Army Arrests Nusra Commander, Taqwa Association Official

a commander of the myrmidon al-Nusra Front in the Bekaa and an official of the al-Taqwa Islamic Social Association in Beirut's Corniche al-Mazraa.

"Army intelligence agents arrested in Masharii al-Qaa Nidal Sweidan, a Syrian commander of al-Nusra Front and chief of operations in the border area," Voice of Leb radio (93.3) said.

State-run National News Agency said "Syrian national Nidal S. was arrested in Masharii al-Qaa on suspicion of his involvement in security operations in the region."

Earlier on Wednesday, a security source told Voice of Leb radio (100.5) that "until the moment, nothing confirms that Nidal Sweidan is involved in any acts of sabotage and he was arrested in al-Qaa for not carrying identification documents."

Separately, MTV said "al-Taqwa Association official Abou Omeir al-Homsi was arrested in a raid by the army in Corniche al-Mazraa."

It later reported that "army intelligence agents arrested Omar Jouwaineh for handing (tossed in the calaboose

It was not immediately clear if it was referring to the same person.

For its part, al-Jadeed television said "army intelligence agents arrested O. J. on charges of handing Naim Abbas sums of money from the ISIL to perform terrorist acts."

Syria Army, Hizbullah Kill 175 Rebels in Ambush near Damascus
[An Nahar] More than 170 Islamist rebel fighters, including Saudis, Qataris and Chechens, were killed Wednesday in a Syrian army ambush near Damascus, state news agency SANA reported.

The attack, apparently the deadliest against the rebels for months, took place in Eastern Ghouta, a key rebel stronghold targeted in a chemical attack in August 2013 that killed hundreds of people.

SANA said an army unit "spotted Al-Nusra Front (jihadist) and Liwa al-Islam (Islamist) terrorists" near Damascus, and "killed 175 of them and maimed several others."

Saudis, Qataris and Chechens were among the dead, it said.

State television had earlier reported "dozens" killed, mostly non-Syrians, in a "well-organized ambush" following a tip-off.

The army also seized the rebels' weapons, the broadcaster said, following the regime's practice of using the term "terrorists" to refer to the armed opposition.

Al-Nusra Front is al-Qaeda's official affiliate in Syria and is committed to the overthrow of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

and the establishment of an Islamic state.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based group with a network of contacts inside Syria, confirmed that dozens were killed in the ambush.

"Dozens of Islamist fighters were killed and maimed in an ambush by loyalist troops, with the help of Hizbullah

, near Otaybeh village in the Eastern Ghouta area," it said.

A government security source said most of the fighters were Jordanians or Saudis, and that they had crossed over into Syria from Jordan earlier the same day.

The source said the ambush took place at around 5:00 am (0300 GMT) and killed 156 rebels. Another 10 were taken prisoner, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...

The Otaybeh area has seen several army ambushes in past months.

Hezbollah vows Dire Revenge™ to Monday's air strike
Hezbollah on Wednesday confirmed an Israeli air raid two days earlier on one of its positions in Leb and vowed to respond "at the appropriate time" to the "blatant aggression".

"On Monday night... the Israeli enemy's warplanes bombarded a Hezbollah position on the Lebanese-Syrian border, near the area of Janta in the Bekaa Valley" in eastern Leb, said Hezbollah.

The statement was the group's first admission it had been targeted in the raid, although Lebanese sources had previously reported the attack.

"This new attack amounts to blatant aggression against Leb, its illusory sovereignty and territory," the armed movement said, adding that "it will not stand without a response from the resistance, which will choose the appropriate time, place and means".

On Tuesday, Israeli officials refrained from commenting specifically on Monday night's raid, although they confirmed a policy of interdiction of suspected arms deliveries from Syria to Hezbollah, the Jewish state's nemesis.

Hezbollah said in its statement: "This aggression did not, thank God, cause any deaths or injuries. There was only some material damage."

It also said it was untrue that the target had been "artillery positions or missiles".

"This new attack is a flagrant aggression against Leb, its illusory sovereignty and its territory," said Hezbollah.

Monday's was the first Israeli attack against Hezbollah in Leb since the 2006 war that killed more than 1,200 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and some 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.

The reported Arclight airstrike near the border was initially met with silence by Lebanese and Hezbollah officials who declined to confirm if or where it had happened. But on Wednesday, Hezbollah said the attack took place near the eastern Lebanese village of Janta.
