General Hafter announces coup; politicians react with scorn, order his arrest
[Libya Herald] General Khalifa Hafter, who is nominally in charge of land forces but in reality without any military power, announced a coup d'etat on TV this morning. Speaking to Al-Arabiya channel in the name of what he said was the Libyan Republican Alliance, he announced that he had suspended the General National Congress, the government and the Constitutional Declaration, and that his forces were in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...

He later said that it was not a coup d'etat as such but "a correction to the path of the revolution'.

The Saudi-backed TV station added that communications and the internet had been cut in the capital.

Neither statements were remotely true. The internet was working with its usual slowness and other communications were normal. Libya Herald news hounds went to the Congress buildings and the Prime Minister's office and found no unusual activity. There were no checkpoints and no extra security guards. The only people in action at Congress were the cleaners. There was no sign of any military activity elsewhere in the capital, either. It is a normal quiet Friday.

The government has responded to Hafter's declaration with scorn, ordering Hafter's arrest.

The Defence Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni said that that the claim of Hafter forces being in the capital was a lie. He did not have any troops. He challenged him to show them to the people of Tripoli. Hafter had no legitimacy, Thinni added, saying the Commander-in-Chief had ordered his arrest and that of other military officers for plotting a coup.

Denouncing Hafter and warning people not to believe in rumours, the Prime Minister said that Congress and the government were still in place. Ali Zeidan added that Hafter had already been ordered to retire and that the coup announcement was laughable.

Hafter was one of a number of largely former leading officers at a series of secret meetings held recently, disclosed by Thinni on Tuesday, which discussed plans for the removal of Congress and the government and their replacement by a military council. Also reported in attendance was Air Commodore Saqr Adam Geroushi, the former Chief of Staff of the Air Force who was disbarred from office by the Integrity Commission a year ago.

The government and Congress were alerted to the fact and Nuri Abu Sahmain, who was given temporary powers as Commander-in-Chief by Congress three weeks ago, ordered the Military Police to arrest those attending the meetings. However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the Libya Herald has been told that they refused, claiming that Congress' legitimacy had expired on 7 February.

Hafter led Libyan forces during the Chad war which finally ended in 1987. After its failure, he had a falling-out with Qadaffy and left Libya for the US when he lived in Virginia for the next two decades, reportedly financed by the CIA. He returned with the 17 February Revolution and early on was briefly reported to have been appointed the National Transitional Council's Chief of Staff. However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the post was then given to the late General Abdul Fattah Younis. Hafter has been been largely powerless since, but still a top military official.

A year and a half ago, there was an attempt to murder him in Benghazi.

Tunisia Police Steps Up Checks for Veiled Terror Suspects
[An Nahar] Tunisian authorities said Friday they will tighten checks on people wearing the Mohammedan full-face veil, as part of efforts to combat Islamist violence, claiming the cover was being used by runaways.

"The interior ministry announces that it will strengthen checks on everyone wearing the niqab," or the veil, the ministry said on its official Facebook page.

"The measure is being taken because of the threat the country faces and because of terrorist suspects using the niqab .. to disguise themselves and escape justice," it added.

The ministry called on Tunisians to be "understanding" and help the security forces in their work.

Women were banned from wearing the full-face veil under the regime of ex-president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

But the practice has become increasingly common since the 2011 revolution that toppled him, sparking a heated debate in Tunisia between Islamists and secularists.

Universities in particular, some of which does not allow the niqab to be worn in class, have witnessed violent confrontations between the rival factions.

Tunisia has been rocked by sporadic violence linked to bully boy Islamists suppressed under the former dictator, who are blamed for the separate liquidations last year of two secular politicians.

Their deaths plunged the country into a crisis from which it is only starting to emerge, with the resignation last month of the Islamist-led government and the adoption of a consensus constitution.

Child among Two Killed in Egypt Clashes
[An Nahar] Clashes between supporters of Egypt's deposed president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
police potted two people Friday, including a child, security officials said.

The violence erupted after weekly Moslem prayers, as on nearly every Friday since the army overthrew Morsi in July, with supporters of the Islamist leader clashing with police.

Supporters of Morsi, who is in jail and on trial in four separate cases, including inciting the murder of protesters when he was president, are clamoring for his return.

Security officials said a 12-year-old child was killed by gunfire in the province of Minya, south of Cairo, during festivities between police and Morsi supporters.

A man was also killed in Damietta province, north of the capital, in fighting between villagers and supporters of the deposed president.

Niger Hands over Gadhafi Aide Accused of Stoking Unrest
[An Nahar] Niger on Friday handed over to Libya slain dictator Muammar Qadaffy
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland and was then murdered by his indignant subjects 42 years later...
's former chief of internal security Abdullah Mansur, the Libyan government announced.

A government statement said Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
had given the authorities in Niamey evidence implicating Mansur "in planning terrorist acts aimed at destabilizing Libya".

It said Niamey decided that the former official "had violated commitments he had made" and had "not respected the conditions of his exile".

The government in Tripoli said it guaranteed Mansur "every right to a fair trial that conforms to international conventions".

It said he was now the responsibility of the prosecutor general and the justice system.

Mansur had been a secretary and adviser to Qadaffy, as well as a media official under the veteran strongman who was killed by rebels after being tossed in 2011.

It was during the rebellion that he rose to become Qadaffy's head of internal security.

The government charges that Mansur is implicated in violence in southern Libya, where Qadaffy supporters briefly seized control of the region's main air base earlier this year.

On February 5, Niger called for Western intervention to eradicate a growing threat from Islamist fighters who have established bases in southern Libya since Qadaffy's overthrow.

The impoverished but mineral-rich former French colony bordering southern Libya has had to contend with numerous Islamist attacks and kidnappings, some of which have threatened the security of its uranium production.

Other countries in addition to Niger have also handed over former Qadaffy-era officials.

Mauritania surrendered Abdullah al-Senussi, his ex-head of intelligence, and Tunisia handed over his former prime minister, Storied Baghdad

Human rights groups have repeatedly criticized the conditions in which such former officials are held.

on Thursday urged Tripoli to allow Seif al-Islam, Qadaffy's son and one-time presumed heir, as well as others detained to have access to lawyers.

Gouro Biswas, a family member of the victim, said Tushar had forcefully grabbed around six decimals of land from his brother Asit Biswas without paying him any money. He also forced him to give six more decimals of land.

"We did not give our land. On Thursday, Tushar entered my house and beat up my nephew Ashok," he said.

Tushar also had beaten Asit and his brother Akhil Biswas a few days back, over the issue of the land, he added.

Locals said Tushar wanted to construct roads on the land of one Debu Biswas in the same village one and a half months ago. When Debu protested, he vandalised his house. They also alleged that Tushar had been oppressing the minorities in the locality since his brother became the union chairman.

China-Japan-Koreas
15 Dead in 'Terrorist Attack' in China's Xinjiang
[An Nahar] A total of 15 people died in an "attack" in China's Xinjiang region on Friday, with eight "terrorists" rubbed out by police and three blowing themselves up, having killed four people, authorities said.

The incident in Aksu prefecture is the latest violence in the restive region home to mostly Mohammedan ethnic Uighurs.

"Eight bad boyz were potted by police and three by their own suicide bomb during a terrorist attack Friday afternoon," the Xinhua official news agency said, citing police.

Riding cycle of violences and cars carrying LNG cylinders, the group approached coppers near a park in Wushi county as they prepared to go on patrol, it said.

The Tianshan web portal, which is run by the Xinjiang government, said that as well as the 11 attackers, two police and two passersby were killed, and one assailant detained. Photos posted on the site showed a charred police van and jeep.

Xinjiang police and information officers reached by phone declined to comment to AFP. Wushi government and police officials could not be reached.

Aksu, in the far west of Xinjiang near the border with Kyrgyzstan, was the scene of triple kabooms in late January that killed at least three people, according to Tianshan. Police rubbed out six people soon afterwards.

Xinhua, citing a police investigation, described those blasts as "organized, premeditated terrorist attacks".

The vast and resource-rich region of Xinjiang has for years been hit by occasional unrest carried out by Uighurs, which rights groups say is driven by cultural oppression, intrusive security measures and immigration by Han Chinese.

Authorities routinely attribute such incidents to "terrorists", and argue that China faces a violent separatist movement in the area motivated by religious extremism and linked to foreign terrorist groups.

"Terrorist attacks" totaled 190 in 2012, "increasing by a significant margin from 2011", Xinhua said, citing regional authorities.

But experts question the strength of any resistance movement, and information in the area is hard to independently verify.

A front man for the overseas World Uyghur Congress, Dilshat Rexit, blamed the latest incident on what he called China's violent policies.

"Chinese armed officers' violent rooting out and provocation are the reason for Uighur resistance," he said in an emailed statement.

"The so-called terrorism is China's political excuse of directly shooting dead those who take a stand."

The most serious recent incident took place in Turpan last June, leaving at least 35 people dead.

In October three family members from Xinjiang died when they drove a car into crowds of tourists in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the symbolic heart of the Chinese state, killing two, before the vehicle burst into flames, according to authorities.

China's top security official Meng Jianzhu said days later that the attackers had "behind-the-scenes supporters" belonging to the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) based outside the country.

The United States and the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
both categorized ETIM as a terrorist organization in 2002, during a period of increased U.S.-Chinese cooperation following the 9/11 attacks.

But the group's strength and links to global terrorism are murky, and some experts say China exaggerates its threat to justify tough security measures in Xinjiang.

No parole for Somali hijacker
[Shabelle] A Somali woman who hijacked a plane between Blenheim and Christchurch armed with three knives has been refused parole.

Asha Ali Abdille, 39, was sentenced to nine years' jail with a minimum non-parole period of six years, after originally pleading guilty to hijacking an Air New Zealand plane carrying seven other passengers and two pilots in 2008.

Abdille, a Somali refugee who came to New Zealand alone in 1994, had been living in Blenheim since 2005.

On the flight to Christchurch, Abdille approached the cockpit with three hidden knives. She thrust a knife towards the pilot and told him to fly the plane to Australia.

She threatened to crash the plane and kill everyone onboard.

After the plane landed, the captain's thumb was partially amputated after he tried to seize the knife from Abdille.

A parole hearing was held on Tuesday for Abdille, whose sentence ends in February 2017.

The Parole Board refused her application on the grounds that she posed a risk to the community if released.

A psychiatric report indicated she posed a high risk of violence and self harm. She was partially compliant with her medication and her mental state fluctuated in the initial stages of her sentence, the report said.

Abdille had agreed to trial clozapine, an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia.

A forensic nurse and a social worker with Abdille for the hearing said there had been a positive response from the medication.

The Parole Board noted Abdille had 28 previous convictions and was involved in a high number of incidents and misconducts while in prison.

She was maimed in one of those incidents.

She seemed relatively settled in terms of her mental health, in spite of a difficult past and a rocky start to her sentence. She also started group work and progress was being made on developing a support network that would help her in the future, the board said.

Despite her progress, there was a lot of work for her to do before she could be considered for parole.

She was in the right place and was getting appropriate treatment, the board said.

...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, DawnNews reported.

The men -- Junaid Alam, Armaan and Hassan -- are said to be associated with Ashaab, a group working for Al Qaeda.

Explosive material and a large quantity of ammunition was also recovered from the suspects' possession.

Raja Umar Khattab, in-charge of CID's anti-terrorism cell, said the men were active at the University of Karachi and in private universities across the country's financial capital from where the group recruits religiously-inclined students.

The group, whose chief is currently in Wazoo, carries out its activities in Karachi, Khattab said, adding that the arrested men did not employ mobile phones in their operations.

Khattab said that of the different groups engaged in assassinations in Karachi, the Ashaab group was chiefly involved in sectarian attacks and also in targeting police mobile vans.

He said the arrested suspects were involved in major terrorist activities in the city in the past two years.

A rescue source said one of the maimed men was wearing the Rangers' uniform whereas the other was dressed in plain clothes.

The maimed were shifted to PNS Shifa hospital for treatment.

A Rangers' front man said the kaboom had targeted a wing commander of the force who was travelling in the vehicle. He added that body parts, including a head and legs, were found from the site which suggested that the kaboom was carried out by a jacket wallah.

The body parts were sent to Jinnah Hospital for analysis and identification.

The targeted vehicle was partially damaged in the blast which was heard from far distances.

Police and Rangers' personnel reached the blast site and cordoned off the area as a probe into the incident went underway.

Terrorist threats force Peshawar cinemas to close
[DAWN] Owners on Thursday closed all cinemas in the scenic provincial capital indefinitely over threats of terrorist attacks.

The development comes in the wake of the bombings of two local cinemas, including Picture House near Qissa Khwani and Shama Cinema on Pejagi Road this month, which left at least 18 people dead.

"We have closed the cinema for indefinite period as police have refused to provide us with security. There are threats of terrorist attacks. The best way to handle the situation is to close cinemas close," manager of a cinema told Dawn.

He said managements of local cinemas had time and again requested police to provide them with security, but to no avail.

"Police never took our request seriously.

The manager said cinemas had private guards, who checked visitors at entrance, but they didn't have walkthrough gates and detectors for explosives.

"It is impossible for us to adopt expensive security measures on our own for low revenue. There was a time when we had full day and night shows daily but these days, the number has reduced to one or two as the people don't come even close to cinemas," he said.

When contacted, Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
SSP (Operations) Najeebur Rehman said police had time and again asked owners of cinemas to adopt 'reasonable' security measures, appoint young and energetic guards, and install closed circuit television cameras and walkthrough gates on the premises, but to no avail.

"We cannot deploy police at every cinema and shop as we despite being understaffed are fighting militancy and have to cover the areas bordering Khyber Agency," he said.

The SSP said after the promulgation of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
Restriction of Rented Buildings (Security) Ordinance and the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Hotels Restriction (Security) Ordinance, police would ensure the checking of suspected people in buildings. Meanwhile,
...back at the abandoned silver mine, there was another kaboom...
during a visit to different cinemas in the city on Thursday, Dawn observed that the places were deserted and that the huge panaflex boards with names of different movies were either removed, covered or folded.

The main gates were locked with private guards from behind them asking visitors that cinemas were closed for indefinite period.

17 Gazans Wounded in Border Clashes with Israeli Army
[An Nahar] Israeli troops fired tear gas and live bullets at Paleostinians throwing stones Friday near the border fence in northern Gazoo, the army said, with Paleostinian medics saying 17 men were maimed.

Clashes are common on Fridays, with regular protests near the border in support of Gazoo farmers who say troops uprooted their trees to create a buffer zone.

Emergency services chief Ashraf al-Qudra told Agence La Belle France Presse 13 protesters were maimed by gunfire and four hit by tear gas.

Earlier he said one of the men shot was at death's door.

An army spokeswoman confirmed the shooting but did not say if anyone was hurt.

"Hundreds of Paleostinians were throwing stones to try to damage the security fence between Gazoo and Israel," she said.

"Our soldiers tried to keep the crowd at bay by using anti-riot methods and by firing live bullets towards the legs of the main instigators," she added.

Later the army said that two "projectiles" fired from the Gazoo Strip hit an open area in the southern Israel without causing casualties or damage.

It was not immediately clear if they were rockets or mortar rounds.

Tensions have risen in and around Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-ruled Gazoo after a year of relative calm, with army figures showing at least 36 projectiles have been fired at southern Israel since the start of 2014.

Gunmen kill four, including monk, in southern Thailand
Four people including a monk were killed and six others were injured in a drive-by attack in Pattani province yesterday. The gunmen are thought to be Muslim terrorists militants.

The attack happened as Buddhist monks were making their morning alms rounds. Six attackers arriving on three motorcycles opened fire on the monks and villagers. The attack started an exchange of gunfire between the attackers and soldiers who were escorting the monks.

Police said the assailants, who were dressed in camouflage, were armed with assault rifles and were mistaken for a team of security officials. Eyewitnesses said some of the assailants were also injured in the gun battle.

Col Banpot Pulpian spokesman for Internal Security Operations Command, said leaflets were found in the province after the attack. The leaflets said the attack was carried out in revenge for an attack on three Muslim children and their mother in Narathiwat on Feb 3. The dead included 38 civilians, seven of them members of the same family, the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists in Syria, said in a statement. Barrel bombs are made from oil drums filled with explosives and are dropped from the air.

Syria's state-run SANA news agency said government troops carried out a "series of powerful strikes" against "terrorists" in Aleppo, including Saudi, Jordanian and Iraqi fighters.

The violence came on the fourth day of the second round of peace talks between Assad loyalists and an opposition delegation in the Swiss city of Geneva. United Nations

mediator Lakhdar Brahimi is set to meet Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Gennady Gatilov and U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman today. He didn't meet with either of the Syrian delegations.

The talks haven't made much headway with the two sides still divided over the agenda of the meetings. The Syrian conflict, which began in March 2011, has evolved into a civil war that has killed more than 130,000 people.

Soldier Hurt in Grenade Attack on Army Post in Tripoli
[An Nahar] A soldier was maimed Friday evening when a hand grenade was hurled at an army post in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
.

"Unknown assailants lobbed a hand grenade at an army post in the al-Ghoraba area in Tripoli, which maimed a soldier in the leg," state-run National News Agency reported.

Clashes ensued between the troops and the gunnies, who quickly fled to an unknown destination, NNA said.

Meanwhile,

a stun grenade was thrown on Tripoli's al-Omari Street, according to the news agency.

Car Bomb Attack outside Syria Mosque Kills Dozens
[An Nahar] A boom-mobileing outside a mosque in southern Syria killed dozens of people Friday and rebels detonated mines under a hotel in the north, killing five soldiers, monitors said.

At least 33 people, including 12 rebel fighters, were killed when the car blew up in front of the mosque in the rebel-held village of Yaduda in the southern Daraa province, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Activists blamed regime forces for the attack, said the Britannia-based monitor, adding that it expected the corpse count to rise because many others were maimed in the kaboom.

On another front, the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL) executed dozens of people as it was forced by rival rebels to withdraw from five villages including Hreitan, an opposition stronghold in the northern province of Aleppo.

Though rebels once welcomed ISIL in the fight against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

, horrific abuses in areas under their domination have turned much of the opposition against them.

Just before their withdrawal from the Hreitan area, ISIL's fighters executed 27 people including 15 Salafist tough guys, said the Observatory.

At least 11 rebels were also reported killed in the fighting.

In Azaz, elsewhere in Aleppo province, further festivities raged between rebels and ISIL, as the jihadists "beheaded at least four" rival opposition fighters, said the group.

Two children were killed in ISIL shelling on Akhtarin, a village in Aleppo province, while 11 members of the jihadist group were killed in the fighting.

Islamist and mainstream rebels opened a front against ISIL on January 3. The jihadists were expelled from the oil-rich eastern province of Deir Ezzor last week.

In the city of Aleppo, at least five soldiers were killed and 18 others maimed when Salafist tough guys detonated mines under the Carlton hotel used by the army, said the Observatory.

It said the rebels had dug tunnels under and around the Carlton and on Friday morning they set off mines to detonate them.

Fierce battles broke out after the attack, killing an unknown number of rebels, it added.

Insurgents fighting to topple Assad's regime have used this tactic before, both in Aleppo, Syria's onetime commercial capital, and in Damascus province.
