Afghanistan
Taliban Capture SAS Dog In Afghanistan
A military dog captured by the Taliban and paraded on TV is British and went missing during an SAS mission that cost the life of a British soldier.

Early reports had suggested the dog, called Colonel, was from the US but sources in Washington have denied this.

The dog was taken during an operation on December 23 last year east of Kabul.

Captain Richard Holloway, 29, was killed during the mission. He was from the Royal Engineers Regiment but served with the SAS.

Capt Holloway has been described by his commanding officer as a "natural leader", whose "tactical ability commanded wide respect".

He added: "His judgement was un-erring, his enthusiasm was infectious and his standards never dropped."

The military regularly use dogs for surveillance and bomb detection.

The fate of Colonel is not known. The Ministry of Defence has not commented on the reports.

But a statement from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said: "We can confirm that a military working dog went missing following an ISAF mission in December, 2013.

"It is ISAF policy to defer identification to the appropriate national authorities."

Govt forces clash with Al Shabaab in Lower Shabelle
There's a headline you haven't seen before, huh?
MOGADISHU -- The Somali Federal Government troops aided by AMISOM peacekeepers have moved into new areas in Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia on Wednesday morning, Garowe Online reports.

Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, Lower Shabelle region governor confirmed the latest clean-up operation against the militant group of Al Shabaab, saying ‘the government troops dislodged Al Qaeda inspired extremists from Gendershe, Dhanane and Jilib vicinities'. Nur told that a hearty road connecting Lower Shabelle regional capital of Marka to Mogadishu currently remains secure following assault on Al Shabaab bases.

"The preparations had been underway for the last three days and the government forces cleansed Marka outskirts where bombings are organized of Al Shabaab fighters," said Nur.

Speaking about the casualty figures on the Somali Federal Government forces, he noted that two soldiers sustain injuries while search operation is ongoing in an effort to capture Al Shabaab remnants.

Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed vowed fresh offensives against Al Shabaab, a few days after he took the oath of office three weeks ago.

Military crackdown on Sheikh Zuwayed, 4 arrested including 2 Palestinians
[Egypt Independent] A security crackdown in the city of Sheikh Zuwayed in North Sinai on Tuesday, resulted in the destruction of 10 alleged terrorist hotbeds and the arrest of four suspects, including two Paleostinians.

Security sources said in a press statement on Tuesday that the campaign targeted the Kharouba area, in which they burnt and destroyed 10 straw and brick houses which security says were being used as bases for terrorist attacks against military and police forces.

The sources said in the houses they found 15 terrorist gas cylinder, used to fill the bombs, in addition to a military uniform that belongs to Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,.

The raids have resulted in the arrest of a large number of men in the last period in addition to the many deaths of what the military has dubbed "dangerous elements." North Sinai Governorate has witnessed tight security measures and widespread, intense security checkpoints.

Many North Sinai residents claim they are randomly targeted and that many of those the military has rounded up are innocent. Residents also say that the armed forces punish whole villages when they suspect it is harboring one terrorist. Ibrahim Menai, the Head of the Sinai Tribes Union, has called the military operations in Sinai a "scorthed earth" campaign.

[Libya Herald] Six children were maimed this morning, some seriously, when an bomb was thrown over the wall of a private primary school in Benghazi and went kaboom! in the playground. They were rushed to Al-Jelaa hospital.

The playground at the Mahd Al-Marafa primary school in Benghazi's Tabalino district was crowded at the time, 11.30 am; it was the morning break period.

There were chaotic scenes at the school as parents rushed to find out what had happened and take their children home, front man of Benghazi Joint Security Room Ibrahim,Al-Sharaa told the Libya Herald.

Bahlul Al-Said, the deputy interior minister, has said that a team is leaving straightway from Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
to Benghazi to investigate the attack, which has shocked the country

Asked if the Interior Ministry was going to now provide schools with security guards, she said that Benghazi people needed to take action themselves. "This is now happening to kids", he said, referring on the level of insecurity in the city.

Benghazi school blast update; 12 injured
Further details have emerged from today's brutal kaboom on a private school in Benghazi with a source at the Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC) saying it has received six casualties in addition to the six which were admitted to Al-Jelaa Hospital.

A BMC doctor, who did not wish to be identified, said that those admitted ranged between the ages of 13 and 17 adding one boy had lost a leg in the blast with others receiving light injuries.

The six have been named as Abdelkader Faraj Omar (17 ), Saifullah Adel Sharif (14), Ahmed Al-Muntasser Billah Al-Ghazali (13), Hassan rashid Al-Maghrabi (13), Amin Nuri Abdulhamid and Ali Hamad Saleh al-Fiki.

Spokesman for Benghazi Joint Security Room Ibrahim Al-Sharaa said he could not confirm reports on social media claiming that the bomb, reportedly a Geltina bomb, which went kaboom! at 11:00 this morning, had been thrown by a disgruntled student. He said that the identity of the attacker was currently unknown although investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The school has been closed until further notice. Initially reported as a primary school, Mahd Al-Marafa in Benghazi's Tabalino district includes both primary and secondary education.

Jelaa Hospital is today working at a reduced capacity following last night's attack on Saiqa Special Forces members guarding the hospital. Hospital workers, excluding accident and emergency staff, have said they would not return until their safety can be guaranteed.

sect attacked and killed 18 traders in a local market in Yobe State on Monday night.

DailyPost also learnt that a lecturer with the College of Agriculture Gujba was also attacked while returning from Ashaka from Gombe State and killed at Buni Gari by the fleeing gunnies.

The Yobe State police commissioner, Alhaji Sanusi Rufai confirmed on Tuesday that the 18 traders were killed by armed bandidos in two villages in Gulani Local Government Area.

The Yobe police boss in a chat with newsmen said "the traders were ambushed by the bandidos while travelling back from Ngalda local market.

"The bandidos attacked and killed 18 traders, 10 from kukuwa and 8 from Dokshi vilages and took away their money estimated at millions of naira".

He disclosed that the bandidos were masked and dressed in military uniform.

"The bandidos were masked and wearing army uniform", he said.

Alhaji Sanusi explained that the attackers also ran into a quarry and attacked coppers attached to a quarry plant in the area, killing one policeman.

Although the CP revealed that no arrest was made, he noted that "the Joint Task force (JTF) and police are now combing the bush and, security agents across the state were on red alert".

He, however, regretted that "bandidos are now parading themselves as Boko Haram to wreck havoc on innocent people and inject fears in them".

Gunmen Kill Four Soldiers in South Yemen

"The attack killed four soldiers and maimed three others," he said, adding that army forces were hunting for the assailants, who had fled.

Attacks on security forces are frequent in southern Yemen, where al-Qaeda remains active despite government military campaigns, and southern separatists have intensified their calls for independence.

10 BCL men arrested for possessing arms
[Dhaka Tribune] Hours after the detention of a total of 42 suspects in an overnight massive raid at a dormitory of Bangla College in the capital's Mirpur, 10 of them, including leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League
... the student wing of the Bangla Awami League ...
, were shown placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
for possessing firearms, bullets and sharp weapons while the rest 32 were freed in the afternoon.

Intra-party feuds through a series of violent festivities among two groups of BCL, students' wing of ruling Awami League, in last few weeks over the capturing of dormitories and gathering of huge arms and weapons for further clash prompted police conducting the raid at 'Principal Abul Kashem Dormitory' from late Tuesday night to early hours of Wednesday.

A foreign made pistol, 14 rounds of bullets, 3 magazines, 21 machetes and huge iron rods were recovered from different rooms during the drive in participation with huge contingent of forces led by the personnel from Darussalam cop shoppe from 11:00pm on Tuesday to 2:00am Wednesday when a total of 42 youths were detained.

The detained people were first taken to Darussalam cop shoppe and later to Mirpur cop shoppe for verification through primary interrogation, said Rafiqul Islam, OC of Darussalam cop shoppe.

The OC said a case was filed against those 10 youths for possessing firearms, ammunitions and weapons.

"On information of the gathering of firearms, bullets and sharp weapons at the dormitory, the raid was conducted as part of the pre-cautionary measures to avert festivities and deterioration of law and order situation", said Imtiyaz Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner at Mirpur Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, the DC said: "All the 42 detained youths were the students of Bangla College. Some of them were detained for possessing arms-weapons while the rest for staying illegally."

"At least 10 BCL leaders and activists were shown arrested as they were found guilty for gathering and possessing firearms and various weapons while the rest 32 were handed over to the principal of the college and senior teachers after they were found not guilty."

The DC said all of those 10 arrested BCL men have the criminal records and were also responsible for gathering of firearms and weapons, which were recovered at the dormitory during the drive.

He said a tense situation was prevailing in the college campus and among the students following the feuds among the groups of the BCL men, who also had been getting prepared for clashing with each other over the control of power and establishment of supremacy.

Asked, the DC said those 32 general students were detained as they could not show any evidence and documents about their studentships while they had also no permission of staying at the dormitory.

Replying to a query, Imtiyaz Ahmed said two groups of BCL had locked into a clash two days ago and they were getting prepared for further clash.

Sources said a large number of the detained youths belonged to the BCL. Some of them had been staying at the dormitory as the paying guests in exchanges of money to a section of BCL men.

Earlier on Monday night, two groups of BCL men fought pitched battle at Textiles University at Tejgaon over the occupation of dormitory leaving around 10 students injured.

Israeli Intel Chief: New Al Qaeda bases in Turkey provide easy jihadist access to Europe
[DEBKAfile] Al Qaeda has set up its first bases in a NATO member-country. Wednesday, Jan. 29, the day Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan sat down in Tehran with President Hassan Rouhani, Israel’s military intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Avivi Kochavi revealed that Al Qaeda adherents fighting in Syria had established their first training facilities in Turkey. “From there, these terrorists have acquired easy access to Europe if they wish,” he commented, clearly thinking of al Qaeda’s reach into Israel as well.

Iraq
Baghdad Bombs, One near Foreign Ministry, Kill 33
[An Nahar] Bombings in Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, including three near the heavily-fortified Green Zone and the foreign ministry, killed 33 people Wednesday, the latest in Iraq's worst surge of violence in nearly six years.

The attacks, which maimed dozens more, came as security forces battle Death Eaters in the western province of Anbar, including the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL), a powerful jihadist group that has exploited the chaos in neighboring Syria.

With violence at its highest level since 2008, diplomats have urged the Shiite-led government to reach out to Sunnis in order to undercut support for militancy, but Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has taken a hard line ahead of April's parliamentary elections.

Wednesday's deadliest bombings, which included at least one suicide kaboom, struck during morning rush hour, ripping through confessionally-mixed areas of the capital bordering the Green Zone, home to parliament, the prime minister's residence and the U.S. and British embassies.

The three kabooms killed 25 people and maimed another 35, security officials and a medical source said.

One attack was just opposite the foreign ministry, but accounts differed as to what caused the kaboom. Two security officials said the blast was caused by a boom-mobile, but witnesses said a jacket wallah was responsible.

The area surrounding the ministry has been hit by kabooms in the past, notably in August 2009, when a massive truck bomb devastated the building, and again ahead of an Arab summit in Storied Baghdad in 2012.

A suicide bomber also hit a restaurant, and a vehicle rigged with explosives exploded in a market for car spare parts, both close to the Green Zone.

Blood and pieces of flesh littered the scene at the restaurant, and soldiers said one of their comrades had wrapped his arms around the bomber in a bid to save others.

Later in the afternoon, three boom-mobiles in southeast Storied Baghdad killed eight people and left 32 more maimed, while a rocket attack on Haifa street in the center of the capital maimed five.

The day's toll could have been higher still, but security forces found a roadside kaboom near the oil ministry in central Storied Baghdad and carried out a controlled kaboom.

More than 1,000 people were killed last month, according to government data, as security forces have struggled to curb bombings and battle jihadists and other anti-government fighters who have seized territory in Anbar.

No group immediately grabbed credit for the latest attacks, but Sunni turban groups, including ISIL, have taken credit in the past for coordinated bombing campaigns in Storied Baghdad.

Troops make slow progress in Anbar

ISIL has also been fighting security forces in Anbar, a mostly Sunni desert region bordering Syria where, for weeks, Death Eaters have held parts of Ramadi and all of Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
which lies on Storied Baghdad's doorstep.

Along with ISIL, other turban groups and anti-government tribes have fought forces loyal to the central government.

Security forces and pro-government tribal fighters have made slow progress in Ramadi after days of heavy festivities, and late Tuesday had retaken several neighborhoods from turbans, according to officers and an Agence La Belle France Presse journalist.

Families will be allowed to return to their homes within days, a general leading the operation said, after security forces check the areas for booby-traps and bombs.

In Fallujah, however, security forces have largely stayed out of the city in recent weeks fearing major incursions could ignite a drawn-out campaign with high civilian casualties and heavy damage to property.

The city was a bastion of the Sunni insurgency following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, and American troops there fought some of the costliest battles since the Vietnam War.

Ahmed Abu Risha, a prominent tribal leader in the Sunni Awakening movement, which allied with U.S. troops against al-Qaeda and now supports the government, said an attack on the city was imminent and urged anti-government fighters to lay down their arms.

Witnesses and a journalist in Fallujah said several different neighborhoods were targeted by shelling late Tuesday.

The stand-off in Anbar has prompted more than 140,000 people to flee their homes, the U.N. refugee agency said, describing it as the worst displacement in Iraq since the peak of the sectarian fighting.

BIFF claims capture of militia base in Mindanao
Islamic insurgents captured a military base used by pro-government militias in a raid on Wednesday in North Cotabato province in southern Philippine, according to a rebel spokesman. The raid came after the military claimed victory over the insurgents fighting for an independent Muslim state.

Abu Misry Mama, a spokesman for the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement (BIFM), said, “We overran the military base used by the government militias in the town. The militias fled during the raid."

Mama said

they would continue to fight the military that he claimed was behind a recent roadside bombing that nearly hit a convoy of army and media vehicles in the southern province of Maguindanao where security forces are battling the BIFM and its armed wing Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) blamed by the government as behind a series of attacks in the region.

Mama said the bombing was done by the military as part of its propaganda campaign to justify the government offensive in Mindanao and to draw support for the peace talks between Manila and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). He said, “The BIFF has nothing to do with the roadside bombing. It is the military which was behind the bombing and then blame us for the attack."

RKK suspected in brutal attack on Thai family
Authorities in Thailand believe a group led by Afandi Kapa from the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) separatist movement was involved in Monday's shooting that killed three brothers in Narathiwat province.

Captain Boonkerd Mullakan said the children's father Jehmu Maman, a former insurgency sympathizer, had been arrested before and he had given some useful testimony, which had led to the arrests of many suspected terrorists insurgents in the area. Jehmu was also wounded in the attack.

Boonkerd said this was probably the reason that the terrorist insurgents attacked the family, and then tried to frame state officials as having carried out the attack. The attack could also be an attempt to threaten sympathizers who cooperated with the government.

Boonkerd said Afandi's group is suspected of carrying out this attack because Afandi and five others were reportedly spotted in the nearby Mai Kaen district earlier. The authorities are now gathering evidence to secure arrest warrants for them, he added.

Meanwhile, a spokesman from Internal Security Operations Command Area 4, yesterday said there were "pre-meditated" attempts by sympathizers to spread a rumor that members of the police and the Army had carried out the attack on this family. He said, "We'd like to confirm that this attack wasn't done by state officials; the black-clad assailants were dressed in clothing similar to those worn by state officials."

They were accused of planning to carry out terrorist attacks in Leb and recruiting and training individuals ahead of transporting them outside of Leb.

Saqr also charged them with issuing fake identification papers, firing rockets towards Israel, and possessing weapons and explosives.

Army Seizes Large Arms Cache at Depot Rented by Syrian Man in Akkar
[An Nahar] The Army Intelligence and State Security forces discovered in the northern region of Akkar on Wednesday a warehouse storing weapons, reported the National News Agency.

The army and security forces raided the warehouse, which was being rented by a Syrian refugee.

The warehouse, located in the outskirts of the town of Aidamoun in the northern region of al-Qoubaiyat, stored grad rockets, rocket-propelled grenades, machineguns, sniper rifles, and various explosives.

Later on Wednesday, the Army Command said in a statement: "As part of efforts to preserve security and stability and combat all forms of crime, an army patrol raided a deserted house in the outskirts of the town of Aidamoun in Akkar, which turned out to be an arms depot being rented by Syrian national Wael Abdul Karim."

Six mortars and eight mortar shells of various calibers, a Grad rocket, two heavy machineguns, two sniper rifles, 23 anti-personnel landmines, ammunition of various types and a large quantity of gunpowder were found in the storehouse, according to the army statement.

The owner of the apartment, its tenant and other Syrian and Lebanese citizens were placed in durance vile

Terror Networks
US designates Haqqani figures 'global terrorists'
[DAWN] The United States on Wednesday named three members of the Haqqani network to its list of "specially designated global terrorists."

The US Treasury said Saidullah Jan, Yahya Haqqani, and Muhammad Omar Zadran are key figures in the financial and support network of the Haqqani organization, which the US has long labeled a terror group.

Jan has been a Haqqani commander in Afghanistan, a logistical coordinator and a link between the group and Al Qaeda, the Treasury said.

Yahya Haqqani is brother-in-law to Haqqani network leader Sirajuddin Haqqani and has stood in as group leader when others were absent, according to the Treasury.

He also at times allegedly serves as a liaison to Al Qaeda and a coordinator with the Afghan Taliban.

Afghan native Zadran has been a Haqqani commander in Afghanistan and has worked closely with Talibs there.

Designating the three as "global terrorists" results in any assets falling under US jurisdiction being frozen, and bans any Americans from doing business with them.
