Afghanistan
USAF MC-12 recce bird goes down in AFG
A U.S. military MC-12 plane crashed in eastern Afghanistan early Friday morning, killing three Americans.

The plane was not struck by enemy fire, a defense official told ABC News, though a cause of the crash has not been released.

“Two International Security Assistance Force service members and one ISAF civilian died following an aircraft mishap in eastern Afghanistan today,” a NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
front man said in a statement to the Daily News. “It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.”

The MC-12 is traditionally used as a surveillance airplane, ABC News reports. The aircraft has multiple cameras, allowing an onboard technician to analyze data from different areas in real time.

Kenya says 30 Shebab rebels killed in Somalia air strike
[Al Ahram] Kenya said Friday it had killed at least 30 Shabaab rebels including top commanders in an air strike on a training camp in Somalia.

The raid on Thursday evening targeted a Shabaab camp in Garbarahey in Gedo region, situated around 600 kilometres (390 miles) northwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu and near the border with Kenya and Æthiopia, the Kenyan military said.

"KDF (Kenya Defence Force) fighter jets attacked an Al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
camp, where a meeting was being held," a senior KDF official said.

"Initial battle damage assessment indicates more than 30 Al-Shabaab forces of Evil killed, including key commanders," the official added.

Another military official said the Kenyan armed forces were trying to determine the identities of those killed in the raid.

"We are yet to establish their identities, but they are definitely big shots in the bad boy group's hierarchy," the official said, adding that five vehicles and other "key assets" were destroyed in the raid.

Officials said they believed dozens of other forces of Evil were alo maimed.

Kenya has been battling the Al-Qaeda-inspired Shabaab on Somali soil since October 2011, and has since joined the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
force deployed in the country.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed to maintain Kenya's military presence in the war-torn country despite Shabaab attacks inside Kenya -- including the attack on the Westgate shopping mall in September last year.

"Let them (Shabaab) know that we will not relent on the war," Kenyatta said late last year.

"Our forces will remain in Somalia until such time when we are satisfied that there is peace."

#1  Glaring error in the article. Article says "northwest", should be "southwest". Northwest would put it somewhere around the Ethiopian/Somaliland border, in Ethiopian territory. Out of range of most of Kenya's aircraft. Still good news.

Sebha revolutionary commander killed in Traghen seige
[Libya Herald] The Commander of a Sebha revolutionary brigade, Mansour Al-Aswad, was killed last night in Traghen after Tebu gunnies laid siege and then stormed the town's police headquarters. The killing is thought to have been an act of retribution for Al-Aswad's involvement in festivities between his Al-Haq brigade and Tebus in Sebha.

It is feared that it may lead to further intercommunal violence in the south.

Aswad had travelled to the small town of Taraghin, 140 kilometres south of Sebha, to attend a graduation ceremony for a police training course at the police headquarters. It is claimed he was specifically targeted by Tebus from Murzuk.

Also in attendance at the ceremony were Sebha's Military Commander, Colonel Mohammed Al-Ayat, and the Head of Sebha's Military Police, Omar Al-Shashou, both of whom were unhurt although they were seized when the headquarters was stormed.

The siege lasted nearly five hours. Ayoub Al-Zaroug, a local Tebu elder, told the Libya Herald that he and other elders had tried to mediate with the attackers for the safe release of Aswad, whom the gunnies were asking for specifically, before they stormed the building.

Zaroug said that after they had killed Aswad the Tebu attackers fled to their stronghold in Murzuk.

The assault on Aswad is said to have been an act of Dire Revenge™ for the deaths of over 40 Tebus during festivities in Sebha nearly two years ago. Three days of fighting in Sebha in March 2012 between Tebus and members of the Abu Seif tribe, from which most of the Al-Haq brigade are drawn, led to 70 deaths on both sides and left 150 maimed.

Security in Traghen has been non-existant in recent weeks. Four weeks ago, the head of the local council was murdered.

Meanwhile,
...back at the desert island, Bert was realizing to his horror that he'd had only one bottle for one message, and he'd forgotten to include a return address...
Ahmed Toka, a Tebu resident in Sebha, said that four Tebus were reported killed in the town today with several others kidnapped amid renewed festivities.

Bomb discovered at Qalyubiya oil station
[Egypt Independent] A worker at an oil station near Tukh, Qalyubiya reportedly found a bomb on Friday.

Police arrived to the scene and a bomb squad defused the foreign object.

The incident brought traffic on the countryside road to a standstill.

Egyptian police have been struggling with bomb threats in several parts of the country after the toppling of President Mohammed Morsy in July 2013.

A bomb placed near a public transport bus injured five near Cairo's Al-Azhar University back in December.

Morsi loyalists hold modest protest in Giza
[Al Ahram] Supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
have organised a march Friday morning in Giza's Mohandiseen district.

Protesters, whose numbers usually increase following Friday afternoon prayers, chanted against the police and the army while making the four-fingered Rabaa salute, a symbol of the bloody dispersal of a pro-Morsi protest in Cairo's Rabaa Al-Adawiya in August.

Morsi supporters have been holding almost daily protests since his ouster in July. The numbers of protesters have drastically decreased amid a major security crackdown on members, leaders and sympathisers of the Islamist group.

There was a significant presence of security forces at several key locations in Cairo and Giza on Friday, the day of the week when protests typically take place.

According to Al-Ahram Arabic news website, police have also deployed more troops in the vicinity of vital institutes, cop shoppes, embassies, banks and churches located in both governorates.

Security forces have also fortified their presence in the main squares of the Suez governorate, according to state-owned news agency MENA.

A security source told MENA that there are strict orders banning any protest or march in the canal city on Friday, after members of the Moslem Brüderbund allegedly assaulted security forces in the iconic Al-Arbeen square on Thursday.

Four dead at pro-Morsi protests in Egypt

protests across Egypt on Friday.

One person was killed in downtown Alexandria during festivities between Morsi supporters and local residents, a senior police official told Al-Ahram's Arabic news website.

Head of investigative police in the coastal city, General Nasser El-Abd, said the death occurred "when Brotherhood protesters fired at local residents," andanother person had received gunshot injuries.

At least 30 were jugged
You have the right to remain silent...
, he added.

Three others were killed in Suez, according to medical sources, afterfestivities broke out in Al-Sabah city, where security forces fired teargas at a pro-Morsi march.Protesters responded by firing birdshot and fireworks, according to state news agency MENA.

Eight people suffered gunshot wounds, medical sources said.

Clashes had occurred earlier on Friday in other governorates. In Giza, security forces fired teargas at pro-Morsi protesters in Khatem Al-Morsaleem Street in the Al-Omraneya district.

Nearby Al-Soueify Street also witnesses festivities between police and protesters who started marching following Friday prayers.

According to MENA, there was a heavy security presence in Giza in anticipation of protests called for by the Moslem Brüderbund-led National Alliance to Support Legitimacy.

Attempts to disperse pro-Morsi demos also took place in Cairo's Nasr City and Shubra districts.

Elsewhere in Cairo, hundreds of Moslem Brüderbund supporters clashed with opponents in the Cairo districts of Matariya and Mostarad, after Morsi loyalists tore down posters calling for a Yes vote in the constitution referendum. The interior ministry said two coppers were maimed the festivities, including one by birdshot.

Morsi supporters have been holding almost daily protests since his ouster in July. But the numbers of protesters have drastically decreased amid a major security crackdown on members, leaders and sympathisers of the Islamist group.

Egyptian authorities declared the Brotherhood a terrorist organization in December, accusing the group of links with recent attacks on state institutions and on churches since Morsi's ouster.

Ministry of Interior officials have warned that anyone taking part in pro-Brotherhood protests after its designation as a terrorist organization will be punished with five years in jail, while protest leaders might face the death penalty.

The Brotherhood-led National Alliance to Support Legitimacy has vowed to step up their protests ahead of the constitution referendum on 14 and 15 January, which will mark a turning point in the transitional roadmap set forth by the interim authorities after the removal of the Islamist president. The Islamist group has said they will boycott the poll.

Benghazi editor's kidnapped son released "for ransom"
[Libya Herald] The kidnapped six year-old son of a Benghazi newspaper editor has been released by his abductors, four days after he was seized.

There are unconfirmed reports that Radwam Mohammed Salem Al-Mazoghi, who was seized on Sunday, was freed after a ransom was paid.

It has not been possible to speak to his father, Mohammed Al-Mazoghi, the editor of the newspaper Kalima. However it is understood that part of the money for the child's release, may have been contributed by well-wishers.

Celebrations in Central African Republic as Djotodia resigns
[IN.REUTERS] Central African Republic's interim leaders caved in to international pressure and resigned on Friday after failing to halt inter-religious violence, prompting street celebrations but also questions over who would step in to take charge.

The resignations of President Michel Djotodia and Prime Minister Nicolas Tiangaye came at a two-day summit of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC) in neighbouring Chad. Talks to decide on new leadership will take place in Central African Republic, a communique said.

Thousands of people have been killed and a million displaced since abuses by Djotodia's mainly Muslim rebels, known as Seleka, prompted the creation of Christian self-defence militia after he seized power in March.

With memories of Rwanda's 1994 genocide stirred by the unrest, France sent hundreds of troops to its former colony last month to support African peacekeeping forces. But the killings have continued, and France has repeatedly voiced its frustration with Djotodia's government.

Sporadic gunfire rang out in Bangui after curfew on Friday as French forces fired warning shots to prevent clashes between rival fighters in one neighbourhood.

Djotodia and Tiangaye resigned after Central African Republic's transitional assembly (CNT) was summoned to the Chad summit late on Thursday to decide on the country's future.

Under an agreement brokered by the CEEAC last year, the CNT elected Djotodia to his position as interim president in April to take Central African Republic to elections, due at the end of this year.

Yemen Qaida Releases S. Africa Woman Captive
[An Nahar] Kidnappers from al-Qaeda in Yemen released Friday a South African woman tourist who was taken hostage in May along with her husband, who temporarily remains captive, a mediator said.

"We have succeeded in securing the release of the wife. The husband will be set free in the next few days," said Anas al-Hamati, adding that the "kidnappers were from al-Qaeda."

He did not say whether a ransom has been paid for the couple.

He did not give their identities, but South African media have named them as Yolande and Pierre Korkie.

Hamati told Agence La Belle France Presse by telephone that he was with the woman and approaching Sanaa.

They were traveling from the southern region of Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
where the woman was released -- more than 200 kilometers (124 miles) from the central city of Taiz where the couple was kidnapped.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, considered by Washington as the most dangerous branch of the jihadist network, remains active in parts of Abyan despite several military campaigns.

Security officials said in May the couple was seized outside their hotel by gunnies loyal to a local chief over a land dispute with the authorities.

The kidnappers came from the area of Janadiyah, some 35 kilometers (about 20 miles) east of Taiz, said one official.

They worked for a local chief who has had a long-running dispute with the authorities over a plot of land, he said, adding the tourists could be used for bargaining.

But there have been cases of kidnappers handing over their captives to al-Qaeda bad boys, possibly for money.

Negotiator arrested after deal with Taliban fails
[DAWN] The Margalla police have arrest a negotiator who was supposed to arrange a deal between Punjabi Taliban and the police for the release of two captives (an inspector and a patwari) in exchange for seven alleged kidnappers.

Police sources on Thursday said the arrest was made following a raid in Malwali village of Attock, and the negotiator had been brought to Islamabad for interrogation.

The arrest was made after a judicial inquiry concluded that the police had not taken action against the negotiator after he failed to arrange for the release of the inspector and patwari.

The two victims had been kidnapped in December 2010.

During interrogation, the negotiator told the police that he was approached by the then deputy inspector general (DIG) in 2011 to arrange the deal according to which seven alleged kidnappers would be released.

He said these kidnappers included his brother, the Punjabi Taliban chief's brother and people who had provided the abductors shelter, the sources maintained.

According to the sources, the negotiator claimed that the police handed over the seven people at Khojri check post in Bannu for the release of the inspector and patwari, but when he (negotiator) entered North Wazoo, he was intercepted by the Taliban who took custody of the kidnappers.

However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
sources said the police doubted the negotiator's statements and efforts were in progress to glean the truth.

"He (negotiator) is in police custody for seven days physical remand and Sherlocks hope he would lead them to the victims," a policeman said.

Iraq
Tribes, Police Retake Parts of Iraq's Ramadi
[An Nahar] Tribesmen and police retook two areas of Anbar picturesque provincial capital Ramadi from Death Eaters Friday, but gunnies still held other parts of the city and controlled another one on Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
's doorstep.

The United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
and NGOs have said that civilians lack access to essential supplies such as food and fuel as a result of a government blockade, while Human Rights Watch
... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world...
has condemned rights abuses by all sides during the crisis.

Washington, meanwhile, has piled pressure on Storied Baghdad to focus on political reconciliation, in addition to ongoing military operations, in a bid to resolve the standoff, which comes just months before general elections.

Gunmen seized all of Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
just 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Storied Baghdad, and parts of Anbar picturesque provincial capital Ramadi last week, the first time Death Eaters have exercised such open control in major cities since the insurgency that followed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Both cities are predominantly Sunni Arab and were former Death Eater bastions in Anbar, which shares a border with Syria.

On Friday, rustics and local police retook the Malaab and Fursan areas of Ramadi from al-Qaeda-linked myrmidons, tribal military commander Mohammed Khamis Abu Risha told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"We fought ISIL alongside our sons from the local police forces and returned them to their stations," Abu Risha said, referring to the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
group.

"They only control 10 percent of Ramadi territory," he said of ISIL.

An AFP journalist in Ramadi also saw rustics and police apparently in control of the two areas.

Abu Risha, the nephew of a powerful tribal sheikh, has backed anti-government protesters and was implicated in the killing of five soldiers near Ramadi last year, but in ISIL shares a common enemy with the government in Storied Baghdad.

Two non-combatants were killed and four others were maimed in violence in the city, according to a doctor, while eight Death Eaters also suffered injuries.

In Fallujah, meanwhile, a prayer leader called for provincial sheikhs to intervene to resolve the crisis in the city, but warned that the government "should not use the army for internal fighting in the cities."

"Do not make Fallujah a place that attracts killing and blood," Sheikh Abdulhamid Jadua said during Friday prayers.

Violence in predominantly Sunni Arab areas elsewhere in Iraq, meanwhile, left seven people dead, officials said.

'Fallujah is an Islamic state'

A surge in nationwide violence to levels not seen since 2008 and the standoff over Ramadi and Fallujah are among the biggest threats to face Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki during his eight years in office.

ISIL has been active in the Anbar fighting, but so have anti-government tribes.

At the same time, security forces have recruited their own tribal allies in the fighting that has raged in Anbar for more than 10 days.

Last Friday, hundreds of gunnies, some bearing black flags often flown by jihadists, gathered at outdoor weekly Mohammedan prayers in central Fallujah, where one myrmidon announced that "Fallujah is an Islamic state".

The Iraqi Red Islamic Thingy said it had provided humanitarian assistance to more than 8,000 families across Anbar but that upwards of 13,000 had fled.

A senior U.S. official has warned the crisis could take weeks to resolve.

"We're encouraging a patient and deliberate approach," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
. "I think weeks would be prudent."

An AFP journalist reported this week that traffic police had returned to Fallujah's streets, some shops had reopened and more cars could be seen, but masked gunnies still controlled the city.

An Iraqi military front man has said an assault on Fallujah was on hold for fear of civilian casualties.

Attacking the Sunni-majority city would be a significant test for security forces, who have yet to undertake such a major operation without the backing of US troops.

It would also be extremely sensitive politically, as it would inflame already high tensions between the Sunni Arab minority and the Shiite-led government.

Fighting erupted in the Ramadi area on December 30, when security forces cleared a year-old Sunni Arab protest camp.

The violence spread to Fallujah, and Death Eaters moved in and seized the city and parts of Ramadi after security forces withdrew.

Three Soldiers Wounded in Clash between Army, Gunmen in Tripoli
[An Nahar] A clash broke out on Friday between the army and gunnies in the neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
.

"At 12:00 p.m., gunnies fired an Energa-type rocket and gunshots at an army military vehicle in the Tripoli area of al-Mallouleh, which left three soldiers lightly injured," an army statement said.

"Army forces returned fire and are still pursuing the gunnies to arrest them and refer them to the relevant judicial authorities," it added.

Media reports said earlier the fighting broke out when the gunnies fired the Energa at the vehicle near al-Rahman Mosque in Bab al-Tabbaneh.

The army had approached the gunnies to prohibit them from carrying weapons near the mosque, reported the National News Agency.

The gunnies retaliated by attacking the army.

MTV later identified the maimed as Rashed Karam, Nasser al-Izz, and Ramez Allo.

The army had intensified in recent months its presence around places of worship throughout Leb, especially in light of twin bombings that targeted the al-Salam and Taqwa mosques in Tripoli in August.

41 Palestinians dead from hunger, medical shortages in Syria camp
[Al Ahram] A Syrian monitoring group said Friday it has documented the deaths of 41 Paleostinian refugees in besieged Yarmuk camp as a result of food and medical shortages, including women and kiddies.

"Food and medical shortages have killed at least 41 people in the past three months in Yarmuk" in southern Damascus, which has been under suffocating army siege ever since rebel groups took control of it, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Of the total, 24 have died as a result of malnutrition. The rest died either because of a lack of specialised treatment or because of a shortage of medicines, Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

According to the Britannia-based group, which relies on a network of activists and doctors across Syria for its reports, three of the fatalities were children and 13 of them women.

"Among them was a one-day-old child who could have survived had there been incubators," said Abdel Rahman.

The UN agency for Paleostinian refugees has frequently warned about the dire conditions in Yarmuk.

On Thursday, UNRWA front man Chris Gunness described "extreme human suffering" in the camp, saying food shortages continued and that the absence of medical care had led to women dying in childbirth.

Yarmuk was once home to some 170,000 people but tens of thousands have fled fighting in the camp.

#2  Should we care? SHOULD we care? Should WE care? Should we CARE?

They are all Moslems and NONE of them are our friends.
They wouldn't scratch THEIR tush if we had a problem ourselves. They would spit on us as kuffirs, if I am not mistaken. AND if they all die none of us will either be effected or actually notice any bump.

Plus they are Palestinians and I wouldn't piss on a Palestinian if he was on fire. They appear to still be having babies according to the article. That means they are still making babies. It must be rough if they are still making babies while they are starving and fighting at the same time. Going at it for all they are worth apparently.

The answer is no.

#3  Sigh. That is actually a complicated question.

Should we care? Absolutely.

Does it matter if we care. Absolutely.

Will caring make a difference? Maybe, but oft times not. Doesn't change the calculus...

Jihadists advance on Syria's Raqa
[Al Ahram] Jihadists have made advances on rebel fighters in the battle for Raqa, in northern Syria, but are on the back foot in parts of Aleppo and Idlib, activists said Friday.

"In Idlib and Aleppo provinces, the (rebel) Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
is advancing, but in Raqa the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL) is winning because its supply routes (to Iraq) are open there," said Alaaeddine, an Aleppo-based activist.

"In Idlib there are practically no ISIL bases left, as is the case in Aleppo city and the west of the province" on the border with Turkey, he told AFP via the Internet.

But in Raqa, which came under ISIL's control soon after Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Trampler of Homs...
's regime lost control of the bustling provincial capital, "ISIL seized the Mashlab district and an Al-Nusra Front base" on Thursday night, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

ISIL has its roots in Al-Qaeda in Iraq, and first appeared in the Syrian conflict in late spring last year.

While rebels initially welcomed the jihadists in Syria, ISIL's horrific abuses and quest for hegemony has turned "90 percent of people" in opposition areas against the group, said Alaaeddine.

Fighting pitting ISIL against other rebel groups -- including Al-Nusra Front, which is also linked to Al-Qaeda but is seen as more moderate -- broke out last Friday.

Hundreds of fighters on both sides have since been killed, according to the Britannia-based Observatory, which relies on a broad network of activists and doctors on the ground for its reports.

Civilians have also suffered as a result of the latest fighting.

"In Aleppo city, people are trapped in their houses, unable to fetch medicine or food, for fear they will get shot by snipers if they go outside," said Alaaeddine, adding that "in Raqa, the situation is even worse".

Even as the fighting raged in Aleppo province, several opposition neighbourhoods of the city came under renewed aerial attack by regime loyalists, said the Observatory.

Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie ducked another tomato...
rebels fought troops loyal to Assad, including Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah fighters, in Taqarin and Tal al-Sheikh Yusef villages of Aleppo province, it added.

Nearly 500 killed in a week of Syria rebel-jihadist fighting
[Al Ahram] Nearly 500 people, among them 85 civilians, have been killed in a week of fighting pitting Syrian rebels against the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
, a monitoring group said Friday.

"We have documented the killing of 482 people in the fighting -- 85 civilians, 240 members of the rebel brigades and 157 members of ISIL," said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman.

Among the civilians and rebels killed were 42 hostages who were executed in Aleppo by ISIL.

Rebels also executed 47 ISIL members, mainly in Idlib province in northwestern Syria, Abdel Rahman said.

"The rest of the deaths came during the fighting. It is likely dozens more people have bit the dust, but it is impossible to accurately document all the killings," he added.

He called for "crimes being committed in Syria to be brought before an international court."

Jihadist-rebel fighting has raged for a week, mainly in Aleppo, Idlib and Raqa provinces.

On Friday, rebels continued to advance in much of Aleppo and Idlib, where ISIL's presence was relatively weak, while the jihadists had the upper hand in Raqa, which has been under their control for several months.

Several rebel groups fighting Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators...
's regime opened a new front against ISIL last week, accusing the jihadists of seeking control and committing horrific abuses in opposition-held areas.
