More than 10 killed in militia battles in Kenya
[Pak Daily Times] More than 10 people were killed on Saturday in fighting in the town of Moyale in northern Kenya where troops have been sent to stop a week of fighting between rival ethnic groups that has sent thousands fleeing into Æthiopia, residents said. Rural communities in northern Kenya have long clashed over the control of valuable grazing land, but the fighting in the town of Moyale has marked an escalation in tension. Residents say politicians in the region, some 800km from the capital Nairobi, are using clan militia to jostle for power in new local administrations that have been formed since a March 4 election, and to settle old scores. More than 20,000 people have fled into Æthiopia, residents and a Kenya Red Thingy worker have said.

Brotherhood protesters clash with locals in Egypt's Nile Delta
[Al Ahram] Clashes erupted on Saturday afternoon between Moslem Brüderbund demonstrators and locals in the port city of Damietta, 200 kilometres north of Cairo.

According to Ahram's Arabic news website, members of the Moslem Brüderbund were marching from Al-Khayyata village and attempted to block Al-Harbi commercial road by setting tyres on fire.

When locals intervened to prevent them from blocking the road, the protesters fired bird-shots at them, sabotaging several shops, Ahram's Arabic site reports.

Security forces later dispersed the protest using water canons and teargas.

According to Egypt's recently enacted protest law, demonstrators must submit an application for any protest to the local police authority at least three days prior to the event. Article 12 of the protest law states that if participants of unauthorized demonstrations refuse to leave after being warned, security forces have the right to use water cannons, batons, and teargas to disperse protesters.

Africa Subsaharan
Boko Haram Scare In Abuja
[Guardian Ng] IT was 'morning after' Friday in Abuja as normality returned after the alleged Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
bomb scare.

It was exactly 3.07pm on Thursday when a loud noise was heard and pandemonium set in Abuja the afternoon.

The scare was the possibility of Boko Haram Death Eaters staging another entry into Abuja as a petrol station opposite the NNPC Towers was on fire.

The kaboom occurred when a petrol tanker, caught fire while discharging its product.

According to an eyewitness, by the time the fire was noticed, it had extended to one of the underground tankers, causing kaboom that reverberated to most parts of the Business Central Area.

The smoke that resulted from the kaboom sent the message of a possible attack on the NNPC Towers to most residents, causing panic everywhere as people made frantic efforts to reach their relatives who work in the NNPC and its subsidiaries.

Indeed, The Guardian was told how some staffers, feeling threatened made attempt to jump down from their offices, believing the kaboom occurred within the complex.

The management of the NNPC promptly evacuated its staffers and offered the services of its fire fighting equipment in an effort to put out the fire.

A source at the NNPC said: "The workers from the four wings of the complex have been evacuated for safety and the NNPC has also deployed its fire fighting equipment to the scene in order to fight the fire.

"The reason most people initially felt it might be a bomb by Boko Haram Death Eaters is because of the impact of kaboom. Of course, people wanted to jump down from their offices thinking the situation was worse, but the management did exactly what was appropriate by evacuating the offices. I can also say there is no casualty as the evacuation process was done perfectly."

The Guardian also learnt that there is no casualty in the Conoil filling station and the adjourning Oando filling as most workers were evacuated before the actual kaboom took place.

But another eyewitness blamed the incident on the carelessness of the petrol attendants who were alleged to be selling product from other tanks while the offloading was going on.

French troops pour into Central Africa after deadly clashes
[Pak Daily Times] French troops received a triumphant welcome as they deployed in strife-torn Central African Republic on Saturday, with thousands cheering their arrival as part of a bid to stamp out deadly sectarian violence.

French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
said reinforcements to a UN-mandated force would reach 1,600 troops -- 400 more than previously envisaged -- by Saturday evening and had been told to "disarm all the militias and gangs terrorising the population". Sectarian violence between Musselmen and Christian communities, that has swept the nation since a March coup, has left at least 300 dead in a wave of massacres and reprisal attacks since Thursday, the Red Thingy said.

French troops patrolled the capital in a visible show of strength on Saturday and a fighter jet flew low over the city, where bodies still lay abandoned outside the parliament building.

Red Thingy staff continued to pick up dead and mutilated bodies from the streets, but had been overwhelmed by the scale of the task. Around 200 French troops crossed the border from Cameroon into the mainly Christian town of Bouar in the west of the country, where cheering residents honked horns, danced and banged on saucepans to welcome them.

"Save us. We have suffered so much," shouted Cedric, 15, in Bouar, one of La Belle France's main military bases in Africa and a nerve centre for the area that saw some of the worst violence at the height of the Seleka rebellion.

Local builder Serge Dilamo said: "There are deaths, they are killing us. Everyone knows someone who was killed."

Hollande told the end of a summit with African leaders in Gay Paree that the French troops would be deployed wherever civilians were in danger.

"I believe we can quickly put a stop to the current atrocities and massacres," Hollande added, describing the latest wave of violence as "terrifying."

In the longer term, Hollande said the goal was to "re-establish stability and, when the time is right, organise free and democratic elections."

Life in the city began to regain some normality on Saturday, with traders reopening their stalls under colourful umbrellas and residents venturing out to check on relatives. "Some activity has resumed. Women stallholders are on the streets making fritters and porridge," one Bangui inhabitant told AFP.

"It is reassuring to see the French," said Bangui petrol seller Adolphe. "We are waiting for the liberation of Central Africans." Residents contacted by telephone saying only sporadic gunfire was heard on Friday night, in stark contrast to the intense violence of the two previous nights. An order by President Michel Djotodia for all gangs except international forces to return to their barracks went largely unheeded, although locals said there appeared to be fewer gunnies on the streets.

The presidency also called on all civil servants, media personnel and traders to go back to work, saying in a statement that "African and French forces will assure the protection of all". The latest violence appeared to vindicate recent warnings from La Belle France, the United States and others that the Central African Republic (CAR) was on the brink of collapse with tensions soaring between its Christian and Musselmen communities. The impoverished country has descended into chaos since a motley coalition of mostly Musselmen rebel fighters known as Seleka overthrew former president Francois Bozize in March.

They installed their own chief, Djotodia, as president -- the first Musselmen leader of the majority Christian country.

Djotodia formally disbanded the Seleka, but ex-rebels continued to wreak havoc. Local Christians responded by forming vigilante groups and the government quickly lost control of the landlocked country.

Reports have described a litany of horrors, with security forces and militia gangs razing villages, carrying out public execution-style killings and perpetrating widespread rapes.

Hollande ordered the launch of operation "Sangaris" -- named after a local butterfly -- on Thursday after winning a UN Security Council mandate to send a peacekeeping force to the country.

The French troops will help to shore up MISCA, a 2,500-strong African force which is already on the ground but has been unable to stem the country's descent into chaos. The UN resolution gives the French-backed African force a 12-month mandate and the right to use "all necessary measures" to restore order.

However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
UN leader the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
has warned that up to 9,000 troops could be needed to quell violence that has spread through the country of 4.6 million.

#1  So the United States can no longer be the policeman of the world but the FRENCH can?

Bangladesh
2 'JCD men' held over Shahbagh bus torching
[Bangla Daily Star] Detectives yesterday enjugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
two people for their alleged involvement in torching a bus in the capital's Shahbagh 10 days ago, that left three passengers dead and 16 injured.

After primary interrogation of the arrestees, police identified the two as Uzzal Hossain, 26, president of the ward-70 unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal
...student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)...
(JCD), and its activist Sohel Chan Milon, 28, DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam told newsmen at a presser at the Media Centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Mintoo Road.

A Dhaka court placed each of the "JCD men" on a three-day remand for further quizzing, said another official of Detective Branch of police.

Uzzal was arrested in the capital's Shantinagar, while Sohel in Bangshal.

On November 28 evening, unidentified myrmidons hurled a petrol bomb on a Mirpur-bound bus of Bihanga Paribahan near the Shishu Park in Shahbagh. A 71-hour blockade of roads, rail and waterways by the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance ended at 5:00am the following day.

Caught on fire, driver Mahbub Hasan lost control of the steering and the bus, carrying about 50 passengers, hit the road divider.

Most of the passengers jumped out of the vehicle through windows.

Quoting the arrestees, DB official Monirul Islam said some seven to eight myrmidons gathered at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the afternoon on that fateful day.

After the Maghrib prayers, the group took position on the footpath and the road divider.

As the bus approached them, myrmidons tried to stop it and blasted a petrol bomb on the windowpane of the driver's side and expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

Uzzal and Sohel, along with a few others of the gang, had been carrying out such acts of sabotage on instructions of their big shots, mentioned Monirul.

Led by Uzzal, a group of eight to 10 people carried out such attacks in different parts of the capital, including Bangshal, Kotwali, Sutrapur, Paltan, Motijheel, Ramna and Shahbagh, over the last few months, he added.

The Daily Star could not independently verify the accounts of the two arrestees.

Earlier, law enforcers arrested BNP Vice-president Sadeque Hossain Khoka and Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed for their alleged involvement in the November 28 arson.

Police on the same day had filed a case against 16 opposition leaders, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, for torching the bus.

Fakhrul, however, blamed government agencies and ruling Awami League men for the attack.

China-Japan-Koreas
Impending Japan-China war has the makings of a Clancy classic
[Japan Times] On Nov. 23, China announced the creation of a newly expanded air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea, overlapping a large expanse of territory also claimed by Japan. The move has produced a visceral reaction in the Japanese vernacular media, particularly the weekly tabloids. Five out of nine weekly magazines that went on sale last Monday and Tuesday contained scenarios that raised the possibility of a shooting war.
None of this looks good. Not good at all.

Three ASWJ workers laid to rest
[Pak Daily Times] KARACHI: Three people belonging to Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat (ASWJ), who were bumped off in a targeted attack were laid to rest amid tears and sobs on Saturday.

As per reports, the incident took place on Friday night near Maskan Chowrangi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, when victims, two brothers, Kashif and Talib along with their cousin, Saeed were sitting outside their roadside sweetshop. The victims were targeted in a drive by shooting by unidentified armed assailants.

Deceased and injured were taken to nearby Patel Hospital in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, said SHO Irfan Ahmed.

Both brothers lived near the Maskan Chowrangi where they used to run their sweetshop. Their cousin had arrived from Multan and was residing with them. Police have also collected around one dozen empty shells of 9mm pistol from the scene of the crime and sent them to Forensic Division of Sindh police.

The funeral prayers of the victims were offered on Saturday after Zohr prayer at the Siddiq-e-Akbar Masjid in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and later they were buried at Shah Mohammad graveyard. The funeral prayer of the victims was attend by a large number of the relatives and party workers.

The participants of the funeral prayers also staged a protest against the incident and demanded law enforcers to arrest the culprits. "One by one our people are being killed in the city on daily basis and no one is here to stop them," said ASWJ spokesperson. "Law enforcement agencies are not sincere. They are only playing with us by giving statements or informing us about involvement of the 'third force' behind the conspiracy. Why they do not arrest them when they knew who is behind these killings."

The spokesperson said that his party itself was inquiring into the incident. He added that they are inquiring the case from two separate angles. "This could be a reaction as we asked the authorities concerned to close the bookstall comprising sectarian hate literature organised by Shia community at the expo centre on Friday," he said. "Or it could be a part of the ongoing sectarian based murders in the city." The spokesperson further said that a meeting of the ASWJ leaders is being held in Lahore where all the central leaders are busy discussing a future strategy, but it is clear that a countrywide conspiracy is being hatched against his organization.

On the other hand, no case was registered till the filing of this report, and as per the police officials, they were waiting for the complainant to register the case.

Iraq
Gunmen Kill Nine at Baghdad Alcohol Shops
[An Nahar] Gunmen rubbed out nine people at alcohol shops in the Iraqi capital on Saturday, security and medical officials said.

The shootings in the Waziriyah area of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
also maimed at least five people, the sources said.

Militants have targeted Storied Baghdad's liquor stores in the past, both because drinking is forbidden by Islam and because such shops are often run by religious minorities.

In May, gunnies armed with silenced weapons killed 12 people at liquor stores in the city.

Also on Saturday, a roadside kaboom killed one person and maimed four in the Dura area of Storied Baghdad, while a blast in the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
killed three people and maimed 12.

Violence in Iraq has reached a level this year not seen since 2008, when the country was just emerging from a brutal period of rampant sectarian killings.

The mounting unrest comes as Iraq's al-Qaeda affiliate has been emboldened by the civil war in neighboring Syria. The renamed Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has carried out scores of attacks on both sides of the border.

Bomb explodes near Israel patrol in Golan; no casualties
[Bangla Daily Star] The Israeli army yesterday said that a blast the previous evening on the Golan Heights was from a bomb detonated as patrolling troops passed by, but that there were no casualties.

An investigation of the incident, which took place near the Syrian border, concluded that "the kaboom was caused by a concealed bomb operated against Israeli soldiers," a statement said.

No casualties were reported from the kaboom, which Israeli media said occurred on the Syrian-held side of the fence separating it from the Israeli-occupied zone.

The Philippine military on Saturday reported that a junior army officer and four suspected members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) including two women were killed in separate encounters with government forces in Mindanao.

The military said that a lieutenant of the elite Army Special Forces was killed while two of his men were injured in the battle that occurred on Friday in the town of San Agustin, Surigao del Norte.

Meanwhile, Captain Albert Caber, a military spokesman, said the two other clashes occurred in the town of Maco, Compostela Valley in which three of the militants, two of them women, were killed. He said, “Residents reported two of the three rebels killed were women,” adding the soldiers later found their bodies concealed in a forested area of the village.

During pursuit operations on Friday, government forces killed another militant in an encounter in a separate village in Maco. Found beside the slain rebel was a hand grenade, ammunition for an M16 rifle and printed subversive materials.

Islamists Seize Free Syrian Army Arms Depots
[An Nahar] The largest Islamist rebel force in Syria seized arms depots belonging to the mainstream Western-backed Free Syrian Army on Saturday, a watchdog said, highlighting tensions among rebel groups.

"After combat that lasted all night, fighters from the Islamic Front captured (FSA) general staff positions near the Bab el-Hawa border crossing (with Turkey) and seized their arms depots," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Observatory said the arms had been brought across the border from Turkey.

The seizure comes four days after the Islamic Front announced that it rejected the authority of the FSA command.

The FSA was the first organized rebel military entity to emerge after peaceful demonstrations against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
in 2011 degenerated into an armed uprising.

It was made up of army deserters and civilians.

Since then, numerous other groups have emerged, many of them Islamist, which are operating with a high degree of autonomy from the FSA if not totally independently.

The Islamic Front was formed last month when six groups merged and pledged to work toward formation of an Islamic state.

Syria's civil war, which has killed more than 126,000 people and displaced millions, has become more complicated as jihadist and other rebel groups battle not only Assad but, increasingly, each other.

#7  Sounds easier to name off who Obama is working against.

Anybody else preparing for the day when US trained and equipped jihadis end up doing something like reinforcing CAR and shooting down French aircraft, capture the pilot(s)? That will be a bit awkward.
