Afghanistan
Seven Dead in Afghan Suicide Blast
[An Nahar] A teenage jacket wallah killed seven people in central Afghanistan on Wednesday when he targeted local fighters who battle against Taliban Death Eaters, officials said.

The attacker let 'er rip in a market place in Ghazni province, two days after another bomber struck outside government buildings in the north of Afghanistan killing 14 people including a provincial politician.

"At around 5:00 pm, a 18-year-old suicide kaboomer went kaboom! in a market in the district of Muqur," Ghazni province deputy governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"As a result, four anti-Taliban fighters and three non-combatants were killed and 14 others injured."

Local army front man Nazifullah confirmed the incident and corpse count to AFP.

There are many small bands of tribal militia across Afghanistan who fight against the Taliban Death Eaters who were toppled from power in 2001. The groups deny receiving weapons and support from the government.

combat missions will finish in Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and foreign troops have already begun to withdraw from the battlefield as Afghan police and army take over the fight against the Death Eaters.

More than 11 years after the Taliban regime was ousted, efforts to seek a political settlement ending the violence have so far made little progress, but pressure is growing ahead of the NATO withdrawal.

Also on Wednesday, officials said that unknown gunnies dragged the father of Afghanistan's cricket captain from his car on the outskirts of Jalalabad city and have taken him hostage.

Mohammad Nabi, who took over the captaincy of the team in March, confirmed that his father, Khobai Isakhel, had been kidnapped in the eastern province of Nangarhar

on Tuesday.

"I have no idea who the kidnappers might be, they have not contacted me," Nabi told AFP, declining to give any more details.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, front man for the Nangarhar provincial government, said: "Yesterday at around 10:00 am, unknown armed man seized him from his car. No trace of him has yet been found."

Kidnapping is rife in Afghanistan's major cities, with criminal gangs demanding large ransoms for the release of hostages.

Niger suicide bombers target Areva mine and barracks
Suicide bombers have struck a military camp and a French-run uranium mine in two towns in north-west Niger.

A bomb at a barracks in Agadez killed at least 19, including 18 soldiers, officials told the BBC. Four attackers died and a fifth is holding four army officers hostage.

The attack on the Somair mine, in the town of Arlit, killed one person and injured 14, its operator Areva said.

The jihadist Mujao group said it had carried out the two attacks.

Mujao spokesman Abu Walid Sahraoui said the operations targeted "the enemies of Islam in Niger", according to Agence France-Presse.

"We attacked France, and Niger because of its co-operation with France, in the war against Sharia," he added, thought to be a reference to French and Nigerien involvement in combating Islamists in neighbouring Mali.

French President Francois Hollande vowed to protect his nation's interests and co-operate with Niger in its "fight against terrorism".

He said on a visit to Germany: "Everybody should know that we will let nothing pass, and support Niger's authorities in ending the hostage taking and destroying the group that carried out these attacks."
'Strong detonation'

Both attacks were carried out as people prepared for the early morning prayer just after 05:00 local time (04:00 GMT), BBC West Africa correspondent Thomas Fessy reports.

Latest - Woolwich attack
[BBC.CO.UK] Police called to 'frenzied machete attack' in Woolwich, south-east London, in which one man, reported to be a soldier, died

Incident now being treated by the government as a suspected terrorist attack, says the BBC's Nick Robinson

Reports suggest a man was attacked in the street by two individuals who were later shot by officers

Video footage emerges showing a man wielding a bloodied meat cleaver and making political statements

Home Secretary Theresa May chaired a meeting of Cobra, the government's emergency response committee, describing the attack as "sickening and barbaric"

#1  She must be the bravest woman on earth, or the most foolhardy.
Mrs Loyau-Kennett, 48, from Cornwall, was one of the first people on the scene after the two Islamic extremists butchered a soldier in Woolwich, south east London.

She was photographed by onlookers confronting one of the attackers who was holding a bloodied knife.

Mrs Loyau-Kennett was a passenger on a number 53 bus which was travelling past the scene, and jumped off to check the soldier’s pulse.
“Being a cub leader I have my first aid so when I saw this guy on the floor I thought it was an accident then I saw the guy was dead and I could not feel any pulse.
“And then when I went up there was this black guy with a revolver and a kitchen knife, he had what looked like butcher’s tools and he had a little axe, to cut the bones, and two large knives and he said 'move off the body’.
“So I thought 'OK, I don’t know what is going on here’ and he was covered with blood. I thought I had better start talking to him before he starts attacking somebody else. I thought these people usually have a message so I said 'what do you want?’
“I asked him if he did it and he said yes and I said why? And he said because he has killed Muslim people in Muslim countries, he said he was a British soldier and I said really and he said 'I killed him because he killed Muslims and I am fed up with people killing Muslims in Afghanistan they have nothing to do there.”
Moments earlier, the killers had hacked at the soldier “like a piece of meat”, and when Mrs Loyau-Kennett arrived on the scene they were roaming John Wilson Street waiting for police to arrive so they could stage a final confrontation with them.

#2  Two UK men have been arrested after separate attacks on mosques following the terrorist incident in Woolwich.
Supporters of the English Defence League (EDL) gathered at Woolwich Arsenal train station near the scene and threw bottles at police.

EDL leader Tommy Robinson, who was among a group of around 250 men, said: "They're chopping our soldiers' heads off. This is Islam. That's what we've seen today."

He added: "They've cut off one of our Army's heads off on the streets of London. Our next generation are being taught through schools that Islam is a religion of peace. It's not. It never has been. What you saw today is Islam. Everyone's had enough. There has to be a reaction, for the Government to listen, for the police to listen, to understand how angry this British public are."

The secretary of the mosque in Braintree, Sikander Saleemy, reportedly told Channel 4 News that he felt like it was a "revenge attack". Mr Saleemy said: "The police said it's too early to try and link it to what happened in Woolwich, but those of us who were here feel that it was some sort of revenge attack. It was clear from the man's behaviour.

"We absolutely condemn what happened in Woolwich, but it had nothing to do with us. It was an appalling act of terror - but it wasn't "Islamic" in any way. I wish it wasn't described like that, because sadly people will now start to blame Muslims."

#4  but it wasn't "Islamic" in any way
Of course not, you lying bastard.
The Qur'an declares:

Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority: their abode will be the Fire: And evil is the home of the wrong-doers! (3:151)

Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them." This because they contended against Allah and His Messenger: If any contend against Allah and His Messenger, Allah is strict in punishment. (8:12-13)

Let not the unbelievers think that they can get the better (of the godly): they will never frustrate (them). Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of Allah and your enemies, and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know. Whatever ye shall spend in the cause of Allah, shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly. (8:59-60)

And Allah turned back the Unbelievers for (all) their fury: no advantage did they gain; and enough is Allah for the believers in their fight. And Allah is full of Strength, able to enforce His Will. And those of the People of the Book who aided them - Allah did take them down from their strongholds and cast terror into their hearts. (So that) some ye slew, and some ye made prisoners. And He made you heirs of their lands, their houses, and their goods, and of a land which ye had not frequented (before). And Allah has power over all things. (33:25-27)

It is He Who got out the Unbelievers among the People of the Book from their homes at the first gathering (of the forces). Little did ye think that they would get out: And they thought that their fortresses would defend them from Allah! But the (Wrath of) Allah came to them from quarters from which they little expected (it), and cast terror into their hearts, so that they destroyed their dwellings by their own hands and the hands of the Believers, take warning, then, O ye with eyes (to see)! (59:2)

That is because they resisted Allah and His Messenger: And if any one resists Allah, verily, Allah is severe in punishment. (59:4)

Of a truth ye are stronger (than they) because of the terror in their hearts, (sent) by Allah. This is because they are men devoid of understanding. (59:13)

Reading those verses it becomes clear that even though it is Allah who casts the terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, he does so by the action of the Muslims: ... smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them ... Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies ... some ye slew, and some ye made prisoners ... destroyed their dwellings by the hands of the Believers.

Allah commands deeds of terror by the believers against the unbelievers as the means of creating the emotion of terror in their hearts. The only reason needed for action is that "they resisted Allah and His Messenger".

Such an approach to "conflict management" is nothing to be ashamed about according to Islamic understanding, but it is a basis for pride. It is one reason for the superiority of Muhammad over all other prophets.

#6  From London Evening Standard

Adebolajo began attending meetings of the banned Islamist organisation Al Muhajiroun and its successor organisations but stopped going two years ago.

Anjem Choudary, the former leader of the group, said: "I knew him as Mujahid. He attended our meetings and my lectures. I wouldn't describe him as a member [of Al Muhajiroun]. There were lots of people who came to our activities who weren't necessarily members.

"He was a pleasant, quiet guy. He converted to Islam in about 2003. He was just a completely normal guy. He was interested in Islam, in memorising the Koran. He disappeared about two years ago. I don't know what influences he has been under since then."

#9  "He wasn't a member...we just allowed him to come to all of our meetings, ask anything he wanted, he learned from us, brought falafel, and was a nice quiet man who loved his family. We didn't think anything about it when he just stopped showing up."

Choudary was going on about the OKC tornado being some Pecos Bill convert carrying out the wishes of allen or something. This deal reminds me a bit of when the Turks were attacking Malta, they had captured a French knight early in the engagement and after torture, dragged him in front of the fort and systematically butchered him as a way to intimidate and cow the defenders. Definitely a gauntlet throwdown.

#1  A memory jogger from 1899:

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome ..."

Bad guys enter Jicamorachi in Chihuahua

For a map, click here.

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

A large group of armed suspects entered the village of Jicamorachi in Urique municipality in extreme western Chihuahua state Tuesday, according to Mexican news accounts.

According to a news report posted on the website of El Diario de Juarez Wednesday, an unidentified individual called the newspaper saying that armed suspects entered Jicamorachi sometime in the morning, firing weapons and threatening residents if they did not leave. The caller said that some residences had been torched.

At the time of the story, a telephone call was placed to the town clerk of Urique municipality, who was identified as Jaime Banda, who said he was unaware of the incursion by armed suspects.

However, according to a separate news account posted on the website of El Norte news daily, Carlos Gonzalez of the Chiuhuahua state Fiscalia general del Estado (FGE) or attorney general confirmed that three residences had been torched in Jicamorachi, firearms were fired, but no report of injuries had been made.

Urique municipality is no stranger to drug and gang violence. The most recent violent incident involved the March murder of a local Sinaloa Cartel leader, Antonio Erives Arduño, 39, who was beheaded. The discovery of the body led to a shootout between elements of the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels.

According to a news account which appeared on the website of El Diario de Coahuila by Red Libre Periodismo writer Patricia Mayorga, last February armed suspects entered two mining camps in Urique municipality and kidnapped six men and stole two vehicles, cell phones and other items. The armed suspects also threatened to kill miners if they did not leave the area.

Both cartels compete in the area for routes and growing areas, and both treat local indigenous people as serfs if they do not cooperate.

Also in Jicamorachi two years ago a feud between two families led to six homes torched, another ten damaged by gunfire and four vehicles torched. The village, according to an archived news account posted on the website of El Mexicano news daily, Jicamorachi is evenly divided between supporters of the two competing families.

According to a separate archived news account posted on the website of Milenio news daily, the most recent census data puts the population of the village at 374 inhabitants, of which 95 are men and 171 are women. The male population reduction is mainly due to migration. About 30 structures are in the village which are classified as residences.

Jicamorachi is in a remote area of the Sierras de Tarahumara, so much so it takes about six hours to get from Urique, the municipal seat to the village.

Europe
Riots grip Stockholm suburbs after police shooting
[BBC.CO.UK] On Tuesday night, cars were torched in western and southern Stockholm, and stones were thrown at coppers and firefighters. One area affected, Rinkeby, saw similar rioting in 2010.

Kjell Lindgren of the Stockholm police told Aftonbladet newspaper that the unrest had spread from the original rioting in Husby.

"It feels like people are taking the opportunity in other areas because of the attention given to Husby," he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Reinfeldt said: "We've had two nights with great unrest, damage, and an intimidating atmosphere in Husby and there is a risk it will continue.

"We have groups of young men who think that that they can and should change society with violence. Let's be clear: this is not okay. We cannot be ruled by violence."

More than 80% of Husby's 12,000 or so inhabitants are from an immigrant background, and most are from Turkey, the Middle East and Somalia.

Mr Reinfeldt said the situation in the district had been improving in recent years, with more jobs being created and a falling crime rate.

However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
local people accused the police of racism.

Rami al-Khamisi, a law student and founder of the youth organization Megafonen, told the Swedish edition of online newspaper The Local that he had been insulted racially by police. Teenagers, he said, had been called "monkeys".

He said the crowd was reacting to a "growing marginalisation and segregation in Sweden over the past 10, 20 years" from both a class and a race perspective.

Justice Minister Beatrice Ask said anyone who felt mistreated by police should file a report.

An investigation is under way into the shooting of a man, 69, last Monday after police were called out to a home in Husby where the man was allegedly brandishing a machete. Police say they tried unsuccessfully to negotiate with the man after learning a woman was inside the flat along with him. They then stormed the flat.

#3  Celalettin Lekesiz, the governor for border province of Hatay, said Wednesday the suspects were allegedly planning to bomb camps and kidnap refugees.

Nuttiest scheme ever, if true. To achieve decisive victory, Assad needs to have Sunni refugees remain in their host countries, preferably for the rest of time. The lessons of 1948 are clear - Israel is secure within its borders only because Jews outnumber Arabs, where Arabs once outnumbered Jews.

Man shot after attacking agent was being questioned about Boston bombing suspects
[ORLANDOSENTINEL] The Central Florida man who was shot and killed by an FBI agent early Wednesday was being questioned about a 2011 triple-slaying in Massachusetts and about his relationship with the Boston Marathon bombings suspects, federal law enforcement officials told the Tribune Washington Bureau.

The FBI told the Orlando Sentinel that an FBI agent -- along with two Massachusetts State Police troopers and other law enforcement personnel -- were interviewing 27-year-old Ibragim Todashev when a violent confrontation was initiated by Todashev.

Federal law enforcement sources said Todashev -- who knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev through mixed martial arts in Boston -- "primarily" was being asked about a Sept. 11, 2011, triple murder in Waltham, Mass., because officials believe he and Tsarnaev may have had a role in cutting the throats of three men and sprinkling marijuana over the bodies.

The law enforcement officials also said that they had questions about Todashev's relationship with Tsarnaev, and the fact that the two had spoken shortly before the Marathon bombing. Todashev reportedly lunged at the FBI agent with a knife during the interview.

"During the confrontation, the individual was killed and the agent sustained non-life threatening injuries," , FBI Special Agent Dave Couvertier, a front man for the Orlando region, said in an email statement. "As this incident is under review, we have no further details at this time."

Todashev was shot in a condo at 6022 Peregrine Ave. in the Windhover community, a quiet residential area near Universal Studios. Todashev's home address is in Kissimmee; it's not clear why he was at the Orlando apartment or why he was being questioned there.

An FBI post-shooting incident review team has been dispatched from Washington, D.C., and is expected to arrive in Orlando within 24 hours, Couvertier said.

Todashev lived in a gated community in Kissimmee called Orlando Sun Village, longtime friend Saeed Dunkaev told the Sentinel.

Dunkaev, 25, said he and other Chechens were taken to the Kissimmee Police Department two days ago and interviewed by the FBI for three hours.

#1  Boston man recounts frightening fight with Ibragim Todashev in 2011:
Incident probably took place in February 2010 - the timeline of the original article doesn't make sense.
Many said he tried to walk away, but Todashev yelled “[Expletive] you and your son.” Furious, Many yelled back, though he could not recall what he said. According to the police report of the incident, Todashev said, “ ‘You say something about my mother, I will kill you.’” “I don’t’ remember saying something about his mother,” Many said. “To be honest, I probably did.” Then, Many said, Todashev rushed him and grabbed him by the shirt collar. Afraid of what Todashev might do next, Many said he hit him. Though Todashev, at 5 foot 10, was taller, Many said he was able to subdue him, placing him in a chokehold as Todashev tried to kick him and his sister wept, begging him to let him go. “Don’t fight! Don’t fight!” she kept crying. His son’s mother also wept, kicking at Todashev. “I had to defend myself,” Many said. When the police arrived, he said he finally let him go. Todashev kept struggling as police tried to handcuff him. Witnesses later told the officers that Todashev was the aggressor, according to a Boston police report. Todashev admitted to sufficient facts in November 2010 on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and reckless driving. Admission to sufficient facts is a plea that allows a defendant to avoid a conviction while at the same time conceding there is enough evidence for a guilty finding. The resisting arrest charge was dismissed. The other two charges were continued without a finding and dismissed after nine months. Todashev’s lawyer at the time, Anthony Rossi, a Chelsea defense attorney, could not immediately be reached for comment. Many said he was shocked to learn the man he fought had ties to the brothers accused of orchestrating the Boston Marathon bombings.
I'm shocked that Todashev wasn't deported after the 2011 incident.

#2  Bit of irony from ABC News: Todashev was a lawful permanent resident holding a Russian passport, when he arrived in the U.S. in 2008 on a student visa, a senior U.S. official told ABC News.

Despite a recent assault arrest, his immigration file was devoid of derogatory information, the official said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Hizbullah-Backed Syrian Troops Advance in Northern Qusayr Town
[An Nahar] Syrian regime troops backed by Hizbullah fighters attacked the village of Hamadiyeh north of Qusayr of Wednesday, one of the last remaining rebel positions in the area, activists said.

"The Syrian regime is receiving help from Hizbullah and Iran. That's an increasing threat to regional stability," British Foreign Secretary William Hague told news hounds at the Friends of Syria talks in Jordan's Amman.

"If the regime were to think they can win a military victory and goes back to whatever was normal before, I think they will be making a terrible error."

The battle for Qusayr has raised tensions in the Sunni-majority Lebanese city of Tripoli

, home to a minority of Alawites, the Shiite offshoot to which Assad belongs.

As the Qusayr offensive began on Sunday, festivities erupted between the rival communities in the port city. At least 11 people have died since then.

On Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 100 people had been killed in the fighting in Qusayr since the assault started, including 31 Hizbullah fighters, 70 rebels and nine soldiers.

The group says more than 90,000 people have been killed in the conflict in Syria since it began in March 2011.

40 Syrian Soldiers Killed in Idlib Province
[An Nahar] Forty Syrian soldiers and pro-regime snuffies were killed in fighting with rebels on Wednesday around an army camp near the town of Nayrab in the northwestern province of Idlib, a watchdog reported.

"The fighting has killed 14 from the rebel side and not less than 40 among the soldiers of the regular army and members of the Popular Committees (pro-regime militia)," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Rebels took control of the army camp, which was "one of the most important bastions of the regime in the Idlib region," it added.

Clashes Intensify in Tripoli as Death Toll Reaches 12
[An Nahar] Clashes in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
intensified Wednesday afternoon, a day after fierce battles rocked the city, claiming the lives of at least 12 people.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth ordered the space pirate fleet to attack Zemblonia...
the meetings of the leaders of the Bab al-Tabbaneh's fighting frontiers failed to reach an agreement on a ceasefire in the city, LBCI television revealed.

MTV reported that the battles have intensified in the afternoon, adding that "all indications suggest that Tripoli will witness fierce battles in the evening."

"Four people got maimed when a mortar shell fell on Tripoli's Jabal Mohsen neighborhood. One of the men is at death's door," it said.

Al-Jadeed television detailed saying that fierce festivities are ongoing in the Hariri Project-al-Amerkan Square area in Tripoli.

"Traffic has stopped on the international highway between Tripoli and Akkar due to sniper activity," it noted.

"Gunshots were heard in the Bab al-Tabbaneh and al-Barraniyeh neighborhoods in Tripoli."

"The army has brought in more reinforcements to the Bab al-Tabbaneh area," Future TV remarked.

The state-run National News Agency reported that 12 people were killed, including two soldiers, and around 130 others maimed in the festivities that erupted over the weekend.

Earlier in the day, sporadic gunfire and sniper activity violated the cautious calm in the northern city.

Tens of homes were damaged by the fighting and families fled to safer areas.

Future TV said that the Nashabeh Mosque, which lies between Syria Street and Jabal Mohsen, went up in flames after it was hit during the festivities.

Attempts to calm things down in the city failed after two rounds of talks between al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
MP Mohammed Kabbara and the leaders of the fighting frontiers in Bab al-Tabbaneh failed to reach an agreement on a ceasefire.

Kabbara told LBCI: "All of Tripoli's politicians are asking the army to end the festivities, but in a fair way that doesn't aggrieve anyone."

The leaders are set to resume talks later tonight.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati stressed that the Lebanese army has the complete jurisdictions to take the necessary measures to halt the festivities in the city and detain security violators.

He added: "I call on all leaderships and Tripoli authorities to adhere to the policy of disassociation, which was adopted when the government was in power and is being violated by internal forces after its resignation."

"I call on all sides to follow reason and exercise restraint over the developments in Tripoli," he continued.

He urged officials following up talks with security leaders over the situation in the city to cooperate with the army and security forces and to lift the political cover off violators.

Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam telephoned Army chief General Jean Qahwaji, who briefed him on the security situation in Tripoli and the measures taken by the army to stop the festivities.

The army has been deployed in the area since the outbreak but has failed to halt the fighting in the town, where festivities have frequently broken out since the March 2011 beginning of the conflict in neighboring Syria.

The Arab Democratic Party pledged later in the day to remain committed to a cease fire, ordering its supporters to exercise restraint and not to respond to the fire sources.

The largely Sunni city is home to a small community of Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

belongs.

Clashes have often pitted residents of the Sunni district of Bab el-Tebbaneh against those from the neighboring Alawite area of Jabal Mohsen.

The latest round began as the Assad regime launched an assault on the rebel stronghold of Qusayr, near the border with Leb.
