Afghanistan
Car bomb hits NATO convoy in Kabul; 6 dead
A suicide car bomber attacked a NATO convoy in the Afghan capital on Thursday, killing at least six people in the explosion and wounding more than 30, police and hospital officials said.

A Muslim militant group, Hizb-e-Islami, claimed responsibility for the early morning attack. The powerful explosion rattled buildings on the other side of Kabul and sent a pillar of white smoke into the sky in the city's east.

NATO spokesman Lt. j.g. Quenton Roehricht said the international alliance can "confirm an explosion occurred on a coalition convoy in Kabul this morning," but provided no further details.

Kabul provincial police spokesman Hashmad Stanakzi said the suicide bomber attacked the convoy with a car packed with explosives. "The explosion was very big. It set the nearby buildings on fire," Stanakzi said.

He said there were people killed and several were wounded but he could not immediately give exact numbers. "The casualty numbers are high and mostly civilian."

Kabul Deputy Police Chief Daud Amin said it was difficult to immediately estimate the number of dead because the blast had shredded many of the victims.

"We saw two dead bodies of children on the ground," Amin said. "But the rest of the bodies were scattered in pieces around."

Two Kabul hospitals reported that at least six dead and 37 wounded were brought in from the scene, city hospitals chief Kabir Amiri said, adding that the toll could increase as more hospitals report in.

The bodies were too badly charred to immediately identify, he added.

#2  Likely that the Iranians, pissed that the US green-lighted the Israeli strike that took out their missiles for Hezbollah and killed some Revolutionary Guards, signaled back through their Hekmatyar subsidiary. The media so far has been too brain dead to mention the Iran paymaster role for Hizb-al-Islam, but the Iranians figure US intelligence won't be unaware. At some point, even the journalists should catch on.

Gunmen Attack Police Station in Libya's Benghazi
[An Nahar] Gunmen on Wednesday attacked and set fire to a cop shoppe in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi to avenge the death of a colleague in an overnight incident, a security official said.

Policemen withdrew from the Alhadek cop shoppe which was then torched by the attackers, while gunfire reverberated around the complex, an Agence La Belle France Presse correspondent reported.

Wednesday's assault on the building came after the group had during the night attempted to storm it.

"Last night there was an attack against the cop shoppe," the security official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...

"The security forces defended the building and killed one of the attackers," the official said, adding that Wednesday's assault appeared to be avenge the slain gunman.

The attack comes two days after a car kaboom in the city which killed three people and maimed 14.

After initially denouncing the blast as a "terrorist act" the Libyan authorities said on Tuesday that all signs showed that the car kaboom was an "accident."

Jets join offensive in northeast Nigeria, opinion split
Link fixed.
Nigeria sent fighter jets in support of troops fighting increasingly powerful Islamist insurgents in its northeast on Thursday, the second day of a military offensive that has divided opinion over how best to tackle the rebellion.

A Reuters reporter saw two Alpha jets land in the city of Yola, in Adamawa state, one of three over which President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, the other two being Borno and Yobe.

Jonathan has beefed up troop deployments in the northeast to counter increasingly bold and deadly attacks by Islamist group Boko Haram, which wants to create an Islamic state in Nigeria and already controls territory in the northeast.

Rights groups said they feared an escalation of the conflict that could cause large civilian deaths, but Jonathan's move enjoys public support in Nigeria, after more than three years of trying to contain the insurgency have largely failed.

Air Force spokesman Air Commodore Yusuf Anas confirmed to Reuters by telephone that "air assets", including helicopter gunships as well as jets, had been sent in support of the extra troops being deployed for the operation.

Nigeria declares 'massive' military campaign on borders
[BBC.CO.UK] Nigeria has sent a "massive deployment of men and resources" to combat Islamist Death Eaters in three north-eastern states.

A statement said the drive was aimed at "asserting the nation's territorial integrity" and "enhancing security".

On Tuesday President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
declared a state of emergency in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states after a series of deadly attacks by myrmidons.

Fighters from the Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
group are blamed for most of the violence.

The group, which has its roots in north-eastern Nigeria, is linked to bloodshed in which some 2,000 people have died since 2010.

Boko Haram has seized control of parts of the north-east over the past three years, and much of the violence has been confined to that region.

'Big trouble'
Wednesday's Ministry of Defence statement said the army, police and other security agencies had begun operations to "rid the nation's border territories of terrorist bases and activities".

The declared aim that it will assert the nation's territorial integrity comes a day after the president said the state no longer controlled the entire territory of Nigeria, a somewhat embarrassing admission, says the BBC's Will Ross in Lagos.

The operation will focus on enhancing security of governmental structures after the president said attacks on government buildings and killings of officials and other civilians amounted to a declaration of war.

Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe are three of the poorest states, far removed from the southern oilfields that feed government coffers.

"We've had a lot of problems [of] border crime, and criss-crossing of the border by the Death Eaters, and there's also evidence that some of the forces of Evil really are non-Nigerians," presidential front man Doyin Okupe told the BBC.

"As long as the faceless myrmidons can go in and out unchallenged, then we're in big trouble."

Residents and news hounds in the north-east said there had already been an influx of extra troops and military hardware.

"I have never seen soldiers on the move quite like this before," said Ahmed Mari, who lives in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

"A lot of fighting equipment has been deployed to Maiduguri," Hajja Maimuna, whose house is close to Maiduguri's Air Force base, told Nigeria's Daily Trust website.

"We are really terrified... Even though the state governor has not been removed, which is good, the truth is that Maiduguri is now a garrison town, full of angry soldiers who are ready to kill at the slightest provocation."

#3  Interesting indeed Zhang Fei, particularly if the contributions turn out to be US materials provided the Iraqi army.

Gaza Militants Fire into Southern Israel
[An Nahar] Militants in the Gazoo Strip fired a projectile that hit an open field in southern Israel on Wednesday causing no damage or casualties, police told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Spokeswoman Luba Samri said it struck in the Eshkol region. A military spokeswoman could not say whether the projectile was a mortar shell or rocket.

No group immediately grabbed credit for firing the projectile.

Paleostinians in the West Bank and Gazoo were marking on Wednesday what to them is the Nakba -- Arabic for "catastrophe" -- of the creation of the Jewish state in 1948 and exodus of 760,000 Paleostinians from their homes at that time.

Islamist rebels execute 11 Syrian soldiers for 'massacres'
Story Summary
Fighters of the Al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front in Syria executed 11 men they accused of taking part in massacres by President Bashar al-Assad's forces, a video published on Thursday showed.

A man whose face was covered in a black balaclava shot each man in the back of the head as they knelled, blindfolded and lined up in a row in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor.

Syria rebels 'in assault on Aleppo prison'
[BBC.CO.UK] Rebel fighters have launched a massive assault on the prison in Syria's northern city of Aleppo, reports say.

The rebels apparently detonated two boom-mobiles to blast through the walls of the prison, which holds 4,000 inmates including anti-government activists.

The opposition said government forces had counter-attacked using tank shells and air raids.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
rebels say claims that one of their commanders desecrated the body of a soldier will be investigated.

Clashes continuing
In Aleppo, rebels appear to have detonated boom-mobiles outside the walls of the prison on Wednesday morning, the UK-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Officials said government forces fought back, injuring and killing opposition fighters.

Rebel sources told the BBC that they had broken into the prison, and had made progress in their fight against government forces.

Clashes were reported throughout the day.

The rebels have not stated what the purpose of the assault was, but the jail is reported to be holding some 250 inmates linked to the anti-government uprising.

'Eat your hearts'
The rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) has vowed to punish criminals after a video appeared online apparently showing one of its commander cutting out the heart of a soldier.

"Any act contrary to the values that the Syrian people have paid their blood and lost their homes to will not be tolerated, the abuser will be punished severely even if they are associated with the Free Syrian Army," the FSA said, according to AFP news agency.

"The perpetrator will be brought to justice."

The FSA said its field commanders would investigate the video, which shows well-known rebel commander Abu Sakkar standing over the soldier's corpse as he says: "I swear to God we will eat your hearts and your livers, you soldiers of Bashar the dog."

US-based Human Rights Watch

said his actions were a war crime.

Sure he will, just got a few things to do before then.
Free Syrian Army Terrorists Sawed an Alawites Militiaman
“Hopefully we will slaughter all of them [Alawites]. I have another video clip that I will send to them. In the clip, I am sawing another shabiha [progovernment militiaman] with a saw" said Al-Hamad.

So what's the problem here? I haven't heard of anything that affronted Syrian values.
