Suicide bomb blast kills five Afghans

Barack Obama dispatches US marines to hunt killers
Barack Obama dispatched 50 US marines to Libya to help hunt down the killers of American ambassador Chris Stevens as suspicions grew that the attack was planned and carefully orchestrated.
The president vowed that “justice will be done” after Mr Stevens, 52, was killed by an Islamist mob in an attack on the US consulate in the eastern coastal city of Benghazi. Three other Americans were also killed in the raid, which came on the anniversary of September 11.

The attack was initially thought to have been the work of a spontaneous mob, provoked by a US-made film ridiculing the Prophet Mohammed that had been highlighted by media outlets across the Middle East.

However, there was mounting speculation that the attack on the Benghazi consulate, which also killed a second diplomat, Sean Smith, and two other US officials, had been carefully planned by al Qaeda linked Islamic extremists.

#7  BS. 50 Marines might be enough to secure the embassy and provide escort/protection for it's personnel. Nothing more. A platoon of Marines is NOT going to rattle around Libya knocking on doors or arresting native Libyans.

#10  This should never have happened. A company I founded offers a compact remote weapon system that mounts the M-240. In this application it would sit in a closet until needed then deployed on the roof of the building mounted on a tripod or pre-installed pintle. The Marine using the system would be in defilade and could project force with pin point accuracy. The radicals would drop like flies and would quickly run for the hills. At a minimum it would provide the time needed to bug out.

#14  From Wikipedia:

The Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST) is capable of rapidly deploying to immediately improve security at United States Government installations worldwide. FAST Marines are deployed at the discretion of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Commandant of the Marine Corps when the primary and auxiliary security forces of the Marines are unable to adequately respond to a security crisis. FAST goes through the Close Quarters Battle School in a specialized course known as Advanced Urban Combat. Once completed, they are given the MOS of 8154.

Established in 1987, FAST companies provide a limited-duration, expeditionary security force to protect vital naval and national assets. FAST maintains forward-deployed platoons at various naval commands around the globe, and possesses U.S.-based alert forces capable of rapidly responding to unforeseen contingencies worldwide. Each FAST company is equipped and trains with some of the most state-of-the-art weaponry and currently consists of around 500 Marines.

FAST maintains a high degree of readiness in order to conduct these short-notice, limited-duration contingency operations, as seen in the port security mission following the attacks on the USS Cole (DDG-67) in October 2000 and the American Embassy reinforcements in Liberia and Haiti. On 12 September 2012 a FAST team was sent to Libya in response to the 2012 U.S. diplomatic missions attacks.[3]

#15  I say BS. This is not usually in the domain of the Marines. They are good at what they do but clandestine warfare is not their strength or for what they are trained. If Obumble is sending 50 Marines to Libya, he is attempting to make it appear he is doing something while not doing anything.
Posted by: JohnQC || 09/12/2012 18:25 Comments || Top||

#16  To ferret out these rats is going to take good intelligence and cooperation. If we could not anticipate our embassy being over-run and our ambassador murdered, how are we going get the intelligence and cooperation we need to catch these guys. If Obumble is not careful he will end up with another Mogadishu such as happened under Clinton where far more boots on the ground were available. Park the fleet off shore and tell to them to deliver them or else.

#23  50 US Marines with a couple of AC-130 gunships and a couple of squadrons of fighter bombers in direct support may be sufficient.

Too bad we can no longer put a couple of battleships with 8" guns of the coast - lobbing a couple of Volkswagon-sized "warning shots" into the local Islamist part of town.

I guess Tommahawk cruise missiles will just have to suffice.

Islam Re-Declares War on Anniversary of 9-11 - Kills Libyan Ambassador
The U.S. ambassador to Libya died as Libya militants stormed the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

The death of Christopher Stevens, 52, on Tuesday came as two American State Department employees were also killed in Benghazi as an 20 gun-wielding attackers stormed the U.S. consulate, angry about an American made film that depicts Prophet Mohammad as a fraud and womanizer.
No, that was just an excuse. The attacks - here and in Egypt - were not just coincidentally on the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. It is a redeclaration of war - and we will surrender by ignoring .
Stevens, who was a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and served two tours of duty in Libya, was nominated by President Obama to be ambassador to Libya early this year. His term of appointment as ambassador to Libya began on May 22.

A senior U.S. senior official told ABC News they are on alert throughout the region and fear there could be more attacks to come. One of the American State Department employees likely died of smoke inhalation Tuesday from the fire at the consulate, according to the U.S official.

#7  While some commenters at Rantburg were passing the bloody popcorn while these same cut throats were chasing down, killing and mutilating the corpses of Khadafy and sons, it was abundantly clear to many others that these demons would be ten times worse to America than Khadafy would ever be.

Ronald Reagon declawed Khadafy through decisive military strikes and put the fear of God in him and taught him to never, ever mess with Americans again. We lost a pilot and a plane in those strikes.

The FOOLISHMENT and total IGNORANCE and GHOOLISH hysteria displayed by some of the next generation of Americans while these savages now in control who are many times more deadly to Americans chased down the people past American generations had managed to tame was completely irresponsible and reprehensible. The same applies to Mubariks demise in Egypt where these brutal savages are now in control in Egypt.

#8  You called it WR.

Clinton is now on the teevee telling everyone how "complex and confounding" the situation is in Lybia. She further blames "a small, radical faction" not the "brave Lybian government".
Posted by: Besoeker || 09/12/2012 9:59 Comments || Top||

#9  Well, wr ...

I certainly hope you're not going to defend Moumar Qadafi. However he spelled his name.

He was a right bastard, too, you see, and he enjoyed killing Americans and causing trouble for the West when he got the chance. That Reagan was able to dissuade some of his baser instincts with a bombing raid simply demonstrated Qadafi's cowardice.

So no, as it turns out it was NOT clear that the ones who overthrew Qadafi were going to be "ten times worse" than him. Matter of fact, I don't see much difference at all so far.

Why? Because they're all pretty much murderous scum.

Oh, I don't doubt there were a few democrats amongst the rebels this past spring. I had a few secret hopes that perhaps, just perhaps these folks would make headway in a revolution and that Libya would be gripped by a sudden outbreak of common sense.

I was wrong.

But that doesn't mean I was also wrong about Qadafi.

It wasn't foolish to want Qadafi dead, it was an understanding of rough justice. It wasn't foolish to hope that the Libyan people would finally get that the best way to be left alone is to leave others alone, it was a recognition that occasionally common people win out.

Didn't happen this time.

What would be foolish now would be to let things sit.

We bombed one tyrant. We can bomb another. Perhaps the new masters of Libya are as cowardly as the old one was.

#10  Post-WWII political upheaval in the Middle East has seldom taken the form of true democratic reform. It generally goes quite the opposite direction. Once the trouble started last year, the demise of Muammar Gaddafi and of Lybia was a very predictable outcome. One can hope that the administration's hesitancy to initiate military involvement in Syria is a result of lessons learned and lessions we continue to learn quite painfully, in Lybia.

#11  Not sure why the marines guarding embassys in the middle east don't have flame throwers and orders to shoot anyone that breaches the walls.

Not sure why the tops of the walls aren't electrified with teh equivelant of a taser to leave the person scaling flopping on the ground in pain (or dead). Glass at the very least.

Not sure why the embassies in the middle east arne't on skeleton crews at this point with an embassadaor and marine contingent (with laser bomb guidance sites if needed) and nobody else.

It is nice to see that not all of the US enemies are calculating plotters like the Russians, waiting for after the election to ensure the easy mark is in office for four more years.

#13  @Steve White

Unfortunately revenge has no place in politics ans sometimes you have to cope with a former ennemy who is also a perfect bastard. AZmerica allied with Stalin against Hitler, with Germany and Japan during the cold war despite they were still teeming with unsavory characters.

Gadafy became far less agressive after he was bombed and became nearly servile after Sadam's overthowing and capture. He was never friend of the Muslim Brotherhood and at times told about Lybia not being an arab country but an African one (a good thing IMHO since panarabism and islamism are two faces of the same money) even if at time he told just the opposite.

I don't defend him but the peole the Obama administrtion decided to support are not only more opressive than Gadafi was but also far more dangerous for western countries than the againg Gadaffi was.

Lesson is: If you are going to overthrow dictator think if you are not helping someone worse. Of course the above implies you want the best for America. I am not sure it is the case with Obama.

#15  And now I hear that the Libyan government security told the mob where the Ambassador was after he was relocated to a more secure building.

Not to mention it appears he wasn't guarded by Marines but locally hired security. Who the F came up with that bright idea? Sounds like a Hillary - don't want to offend the locals by protecting ourselves do we?

the "I am not sure" was of course mere rhetoric.

I notice:

-Obama has sytematically supported Islamists all while torpedoing both democrats and secular military in North Africa and Turkey

-Obama jas given an exit date from Afghanistan a big NO-NO when you fight a gierrilla: local fear being voctims of the bad huys so they try to congratiate them bu proving them shelter, information or even by attacking your soldiers. Notice the shatp increase on coalition forces drom Aghan police or military.

-Obam has denied weapons to anti-Taliban Afghan minorities who suppoered the Northern Allonce in pre 9-11 times.

-Obama disclosed the identities if the Seals who killed Bin Laden

-Obama has not lifted a finger against Iran'w WMD program.

-Obama let Iranian opposition in the colmd

-Obama has tried to prevent Israel from acting and has given the cold shoulder to Netanyahh all while receiving Morsi in the WH

-Obama has given clearance to sensitive infoprmation to people close to kihadism.

It is too much for being simple stupidity.

#31  Libyan Official: US at Fault in Attacks

Although the head of Libya's National Assembly has formally apologized for the killing of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens, other higher-ranking Libyan officials refuse to apologize and continue to contend the US is to blame.

For example, Libya's Deputy Interior Minister Wanis Al-Sharif says the US should have realized its consulate personnel were in danger once the film "Innocence of Muslims" insulted Islam by calling the Prophet Mohammed into question. The film was made by an Israeli-American who is now in hiding.

Said Sharif: "[The US] is to blame simply for not withdrawing their personnel from the premises... It was necessary that they take precautions. It was their fault that they did not take the necessary precautions."

Sharif also made it clear that the embassy was a sitting duck to begin with -- that those who overran it were far better armed than those assigned to protect it.

#33  Obama Camp Condemns Romney Before Condemning Attacks In Egypt, Libya

At 11:53pm last night Talking Points Memo released a statement from the Obama campaign condemning Mitt Romney for criticizing something the White House itself disavowed -- an appalling apology issued by the State Department.

Eight hours later, President Obama finally got around to condemning the monsters who attacked us on our own soil and killed our fellow citizens.

Yesterday, on the 11th anniversary of September 11, the Obama White House snubbed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accepted an invitation from David Letterman, and apologized to Islamists upset over a film that mocks Islam and Mohammed -- something "artists" in America do to Christianity with my tax dollars on a fairly regular basis.

First off: Why is our Embassy apologizing for a film no one has seen and apologizing for freedom of speech and expression? In a word, that's un-American. And let's remember that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton doubled down on the apology. Last night, though, the White House finally disavowed the apology, but now the hypocritical and wildly dishonest Obama campaign is lashing out at Mitt Romney for being critical of the same apology the White House itself disavowed.

Here's the Romney statement:

I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It’s disgraceful that the Obama administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.

So I guess it's okay for President Obama to criticize that disgraceful apology but not Romney. And now the left is claiming the apology in question from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was made before the compound was attacked. But it's just a fact that the on Twitter and elsewhere, even after the attack, that the Embassy defended and stood by the apology.

And let me reiterate that after the attack, Hillary doubled down on it.

#38  It appears to me that Obama doesn't necessarily want the worst for the USA, he just doesn't think we should be the dominant power. He is genuinely embarresed by how well the USA has done and it flies in the face of his belief that nothing can happen without Government. He believes we and the World would be better off if the US was down around 100 and much less influential in the world.

Egyptians angry at film scale U.S. embassy walls
This happened mid-day yesterday and so may be old news, but I'm posting a truncated version of the story for those of you who missed it.
CAIRO - Egyptian protesters scaled the walls of the U.S. embassy on Tuesday, tore down the American flag and burned it during a protest over what they said was a film being produced in the United States that insulted Prophet Mohammad.

In place of the U.S. flag, the protesters tried to raise a black flag with the words "There is no God but God, and Mohammad is his messenger", a Reuters witness said.

Once the U.S. flag was hauled down, some protesters tore it up and showed off pieces to television cameras. Others burned the remains outside the fortress-like embassy building in central Cairo. But some protesters objected to the flag burning.

Many Muslims consider any depiction of the Prophet to be offensive.
Strangely, the great, great majority of Christians manage not to riot when some lamebrain creates a painting of a crucifix in a jug of urine...
"This movie must be banned immediately and an apology should be made," said 19-year-old Ismail Mahmoud, a member of the so-called "ultras" soccer supporters who played a big role in the uprising that brought down Hosni Mubarak last year.
Apology delivered by our Cairo embassy weenies. They should be condemned ... to remain in Cairo...
He called on President Mohamed Mursi, Egypt's first civilian president and an Islamist, to take action, without giving details of the film that angered him or other protesters.

About 20 people stood on top of the embassy wall, while about 2,000 protesters gathered outside. The demonstrators were mainly supporters of Islamist groups or "ultras" youths.

Washington has a big mission in Egypt, partly because of a huge aid programme that followed Egypt's signing of a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. The United States gives $1.3 billion to Egypt's military each year and offers the nation other aid.
How about giving nothing further until Mursi personally hands our ambassador a replacement flag?
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland in Washington said the wall was breached and the flag removed. "We are obviously working with Egyptian security to try to restore order at the embassy and to work with them to try to get the situation under control," she said.

Following the protest, Egypt's Foreign Ministry said it was committed to giving all embassies the necessary protection.

The U.S. embassy had put out a statement earlier on Tuesday condemning "misguided individuals" who hurt the religious feelings of Muslims or followers of other religions. "We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others," the U.S. embassy said in its statement.
Pure Obama -- we're always the ones who are wrong. His father and mentors must be proud.
I understand this is the trailer for the film in question.

#18  Suffocation could be the result of fire or Thermobaric RPG rounds:

TBG-7V Thermobaric round (Russian Federation), Grenades - Rocket-propelled

The TBG-7V thermobaric round with secondary fragmentation effect is fired from the RPG-7 series of shoulder-fired rocket-launchers. The TBG-7V round has been designed to defeat lightly armoured and soft-skinned vehicles, as well as for use against field fortifications and personnel in the open or in trenches. The thermobaric warhead contains a bursting charge that on impact, ignites and spreads the contents of the warhead which contains an oxygen deficient filling, which as it burns creates a rapidly forming high-pressure blast wave which neutralises the target area. The warhead is fitted with a mechanical fuze and a self-destruction mechanism. Effectiveness against personnel in enclosed structures with warhead detonation at a distance of 1 m from embrasures, windows and doorways is given as rooms with a volume of up to 300 cm³ and in trenches with the warhead detonation at a distance of 2 m from the trench parapet. The PUI-7TBG 38 mm sub-calibre practise device is available to reduce the costs of training.

#19  From CBS:

Wanis al-Sharef, a Libyan Interior Ministry official in Benghazi, said the four Americans were killed when the angry mob, which gathered to protest a U.S.-made film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad, fired guns and burned down the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

He said Stevens, 52, and other officials were moved to a second building, deemed safer, after the initial wave of protests at the consulate. According to al-Sharef, members of the Libyan security team seem to have indicated to the protesters the building to which the American officials had been relocated, and that building then came under attack.

The lawful way would be to rewrite corporate law so that elements that claim first amendment 'free press' rights must stand financially as an independent agent without recourse to other corporate subsidies to cover loses caused by their "product's" inability to sell. The free market will then take care of the issue.

#27  "Where were the Marine guards?"

I answered my own question. Looks like 2 Marines were murdered trying to get to the ambassador.

"Al-Sharef said two U.S. Marines sent to Benghazi when the clash erupted were shot and killed by the well-armed protesters. It was not immediately clear whether the Marines were part of Stevens' security detail. The American whose death was confirmed on Tuesday also died of a gunshot wound. He was identified by the State Department on Wednesday as Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith.?

EXACTLY! And eerily similar to 9/11....WHO was at the switch? WHO monitoring developing events and reporting/building threat assessments at the strategic and national levels? Is this a rehearsal?

Was the recently reported reluctance of the administration and the Champ to meet in the upcoming days with Netanyahu related to this attack? Was the meeting seen a potential provocation or tipping point to be avoided?

Many questions remain unanswered.

Oh and expel their UN ambassador as well if he leaves the UN compound. Perhaps that would convince the UN to move to another country on their own.

US Official Killed In Libya Prophet Protest
[Sky News] A US official has been killed and others maimed in Libya as an armed mob protesting over a film they said offended Islam attacked the US consulate in Benghazi.

Libya's Supreme Security Committee front man said: "One American staff member has died and a number have been injured in the festivities."

But Abdel Monem al Hurr said he did not know the exact number of injured.

Armed gunnies attacked the compound on Tuesday evening, clashing with Libyan security forces before the latter withdrew as they came under heavy fire.

Reporters on the scene said they could see looters raiding the compound, walking off with desks, chairs and washing machines.

Libya's deputy interior minister Wanis al Sharef said that other staff members were evacuated "and are safe and sound".

In the Egyptian capital, Cairo, earlier, protesters climbed the walls of the US embassy, tore down the American flag and burned it.

Protesters raised a black flag at the Cairo embassy
The protests were sparked by outrage over a video being promoted by an extreme anti-Moslem Egyptian Christian campaigner in the US, which the demonstrators say insults the Prophet Mohammed.

The US condemned the attack in Benghazi, amid reports that the mission had been set on fire and targeted with rocket-propelled grenades.

"We can confirm that our office in Benghazi, Libya, has been attacked by a group of thugs," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

"We condemn in strongest terms this attack," she added in a statement issued before reports of the death, which came on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

US officials were working with the Libyans to secure the compound, Nuland said, adding that the earlier protest in Cairo had ended.

Abdelmonoem al Horr, a front man for the Libyan interior ministry's security commission, said the grenades were fired from a nearby farm at the building.

Security forces and the interior ministry were trying to contain the situation, he added.

The film apparently depicts Mohammed as a fraud, showing him having sex and calling for massacres.

Many Moslems consider any depiction of the prophet to be offensive.

But officials said it remained unclear whether the two protests in Benghazi and Cairo had been coordinated or whether they were linked.

"We cannot confirm any connection between these incidents," said a senior State Department official, asking to remain anonymous.

Arabia
Yemen’s defense minister escapes car bomb
SANAA: Yemen’s defense minister escaped an assassination attempt yesterday but at least 12 people died in the car bombing that followed the killing of Al-Qaeda’s second-in-command in the country, government officials said.

Witnesses said the blast happened as Maj. Gen. Muhammad Nasir Ahmad’s motorcade left the prime minister’s office in Sanaa after a cabinet meeting. Interior Minister Abdul Qader Qahtan told state television that seven security guards and five civilians were killed and 12 other people were wounded.

One vehicle carrying security personnel was destroyed but the minister, who was traveling in a different armored-plated car, survived. Aides said he was unhurt and had told Prime Minister Mohammed Basindwa he was safe.

“A booby-trapped car waited for the motorcade of the minister near the government offices and as soon as it moved, it exploded,” a security source told Reuters. “A security car was totally destroyed and all its occupants were killed, but the minister survived because his car is armored.”

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which followed the killing of the deputy leader of the Yemeni branch of Al-Qaeda, Said Al-Shehri, in an attack last week. Al Qaeda blames the minister for leading a campaign that drove it from strongholds in southern Yemen, an area that has become of increasing concern to the United States in its campaign against Islamist militants.

Yemen claimed a major victory in its battle with Al-Qaeda this week with the death of Shehri, although public anger about US drone attacks remains strong because of civilian deaths.

Shehri was wanted by Yemeni, Saudi and US authorities over his role in Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). A former inmate of the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Shehri was released to Saudi Arabia in 2007, but after time on a Saudi militant rehabilitation program he escaped to Yemen and possibly had a role in a 2008 attack on the US embassy.

Last year Yemen claimed it had killed him, only for it to emerge Shehri was still at large.
And now he's most sincerely dead...

7 bad guys die in Tamaulipas state

Rantburg.com

A total of seven armed suspects were killed in a gunfight with a Mexican Army road patrol in Ciudad Victoria in Tamaulipas state Monday evening, according to Mexican news accounts.

In a news item posted on the website of Vanguardia news daily, the gun battle took place near the intersection of calles 16th and Olivia Ramirez, where gunfire between armed suspects travelling aboard four vehicles an an army unit took place at around 1730 hrs.

The dead were all males between the ages of 25 and 35. A number of weapons were seized in the aftermath, as well as the four vehicles.

Tamaulipas is very much in the midst of violent Mexican gang turmoil, as the Los Zetas criminal gang has been undergoing a split. The criminal group has also been under considerable pressure since last spring from the Sinaloa cartel, now aligned with the Gulf Cartel, in its very front yard in Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas.

Last month leaders with Los Caballeros Templariosdrug cartel also declared war on Los Zetas in western Mexico.

In a related development, Animal Politico reported on its website Tuesday afternoon that a number of roadblocks have been put up by criminal gangs in the border city of Reynosa in Tamaulipas.

Among the roads affected include Bulevar Morelos , Avenida Colosio, the Puente de la Muerte and Calle Rodhe. Policia Federal units are said to be involved in road clearing operations.

Criminal gangs hijack heavy vehicles such as buses and tractor trailer rigs, then disable the vehicles to use them to block roads. The tactic is meant to slow reaction times and block intervention by local security forces, and sometimes are used to punish the local population for a sharp reverse at the hands of Mexican security forces.

Suicide Blast at Istanbul Police Station Kills One, Wounds 5
[An Nahar] At least on police officer died and five people were severely maimed on Tuesday in a suicide kaboom that targeted a cop shoppe in central Istanbul, Turkish media reported.

The attacker came running towards the cop shoppe in the central Sultangazi neighborhood and went kaboom!" at the entrance, partially caving in the front door and the ceiling, said witnesses.

The rubble crushed several people, including coppers, inside the building. The maimed were taken to nearby hospitals and the toll was likely to rise, said an Agence La Belle France Presse photographer at the scene.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

In May, a suicide bomb squad killed one policeman when they drove into a cop shoppe in the central city of Kayseri and opened gun fire before setting off a bomb.

That attack killed one officer instantly, left another at death's door and maimed 16 civilians, including several children. The two assailants were also killed.

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) said it had carried out the May attack.

Taliban release video of dam project workers kidnapped last month
[Dawn] The Taliban have released a video, which shows the eight men, who were kidnapped in the South Wazoo tribal area last month, pleading to authorities for their safe release.

The video, released on Tuesday, shows the eight employees of the Gomal Zam Dam project who were kidnapped on August 15.

"We appeal to the Government of Pakistain and Wapda to fulfill the demands of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain and arrange for our safe release as soon as possible," one of the men was shown as saying.

The video also shows the men pleading for the bad turbans' demands to be met at the earliest, saying that one of their co-workers had been killed by the bad turbans.

The workers were travelling towards Tank from the dam site in South Waziristan when their pick-up vehicle was intercepted by the bad turbans, who kidnapped the men. The incident took place at Murtaza Goth near Gradawi, which lies 30 kilometres west of Tank.

The workers include an engineer, a sub-engineer, two drivers, a cook, two security personnel and a labourer, according to reports.

91 Thai rebels surrender
91 men facing insurgency-related charges surrendered to authorities yesterday and asked for legal assistance and help in starting new lives. They turned themselves in to security officials and met Fourth Army commander Udomchai Thamsarorach at the Islamic Committee Office in Narathiwat. They face either security law or criminal charges, while others are charged under both sets of law.

The defectors belonged to a terrorist rebel group called Badan Penyelarasan Wawasan Baru Melayu Patani. One of the defectors was Waeali Copter Waji, alias Jeh Ali, a key suspect in connection with the Jan 4, 2004 arms robbery at the 4th Development Battalion.

The men gave the army commander a letter declaring they have formally quit the insurgency. The letter said they believed the group's goals were too ambitious and its strategies were not successful.

The rebel group also shifted its stance as the government changed its security policies.

Mr Muktar said that life in the forest hideouts was tough. He said that, after a while, they realised they were fighting a lost cause and decided to defect.

The defectors asked Gen Udomchai how authorities intended to help them deal with the legal charges against them. They said they wanted jobs and peaceful and safe lives.

Deputy Prime Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapa said Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra have promised to secure jobs and give them loans to restart their lives. State agencies will also ensure they are treated fairly in the legal proceedings, said Gen Yutthasak, who added the 91 were moderate separatists. Hard-core members of the group remain at large.

Mr Muktar said that there were hundreds more rebels who were ready to surrender. Some who faced legal charges have fled to Malaysia and returned occasionally, but could not find work. He said, "Everyone wants to come out in the open and look after their families. But, above all, they want safety. If the government can provide what they ask for, there will be many more defectors."

The 91 defectors, however, are not the same people whom Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung recently said were planning to surrender.

Aleppo Pounded as Civilian Refuge 'Targeted'
[An Nahar] Bombardments by troops saw fighting ground to a standstill on Tuesday in Syria's second city Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
, a watchdog said, amid reports a civilian refuge was targeted in the same province.

Water supplies were largely restored in the northern city three days after a main pipeline was ruptured during festivities between government forces and rebel fighters, witnesses and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Britannia-based Observatory reported shelling attacks on the Aleppo neighborhoods of Haidariyeh, Hanano, Meyseer and Shaar overnight, and that one rebel had been killed in the fighting.

"The rebels have been trying for three days to enter Midan (in central Aleppo). Last night the army launched an operation and pushed them north, back toward Bustan al-Basha," a resident told Agence La Belle France Presse on the phone.

"The city is quiet now," the resident added.

In the town of As-Safira, "mortar fire from an air defense battalion targeted residential buildings and a school, where many refugees from disaster-stricken areas sought refuge and shelter," according to the Local Coordination Committees (LCC), a network of activists on the ground.

The Observatory said it was unable to immediately confirm the report.

Drinking water supplies -- cut off in many areas of the city after a main pipe was blown open during fighting and government air raids on Saturday -- were back restored after repairs, the resident said.

But shortages persisted in the northeast of the city, including in rebel-controlled district of Bustan al-Basha.

In the capital, an kaboom rocked the upscale western district of Mazzeh overnight, while pro-regime gunnies clashed with rebels in Barzeh, another wealthy neighborhood in the northeast, the Observatory said.

One man was killed in the northeastern suburb of Douma in unknown circumstances, while a child died after being hit by mortar rounds in a town elsewhere in the same province, the Observatory said.

The LCC meanwhile reported that helicopters were flying over Damascus
...The capital of Iran's Syrian satrapy...
and its suburbs.

The activist network reported that government forces stormed the town of Daraya with tanks and heavy machinery.

Daraya, a conservative Sunni town just south of Damascus was where hundreds of bodies were found in late August after an army onslaught in what activists called a "massacre".

In Deir Ezzor province in the east, warplanes bombarded the town of Albu Kamal. In Deir Ezzor city, festivities broke out amid shelling, and rebels deployed anti-aircraft guns as helicopters were seen hovering over the area.

One man was killed in the northwestern province of Idlib, the Observatory said, as fierce festivities broke out in Idlib city between the rebels and military backed by aircraft.

On Monday, 139 people were killed across Syria, including 105 civilians, according to the Observatory.

Zawahiri Confirms Death of al-Libi
[An Nahar] Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
has released a video coinciding with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, confirming for the first time the death of his deputy, U.S. monitors said.

The 42-minute video is Zawahiri's first release in three months, and confirms that Abu Yahya al-Libi was killed in a drone strike in Pakistain's Wazoo tribal area on June 4, according to SITE and IntelCenter.

Libi was considered al-Qaeda's global propaganda criminal mastermind and his death dealt the biggest blow to the group since the killing of the late Osama bin Laden
... who has left the building...
by U.S. special forces in May 2011.

"With the martyrdom of Sheikh Abu Yahya, may Allah have mercy on him, people will flock even more to his writings and call, Allah willing," Zawahiri says in Arabic, according to a SITE translation.

The video was posted on jihadist forums on Monday, the U.S. monitors said, and the translated text does not directly address the 9/11 anniversary.

Zawahiri does single out U.S. President Barack Obama
If you have a small business, you didn't build that...
for being a "liar" who was elected to "trick" Mohammedans around the world, but who nevertheless is "being defeated in Afghanistan".

He also mentions Warren Weinstein, an elderly U.S. aid worker kidnapped in Pakistain by al-Qaeda just over a year ago, vowing to keep him in captivity until U.S.-led forces release Qaeda followers held in Afghanistan.

Entitled "The Lion of Knowledge and Jihad: Martyrdom of al-Sheikh Abu Yahya al-Libi", the video is Zawahiri's 13th statement in 2012. His videos are often released in Urdu and Pashto.
