Afghanistan
18 Militants killed in Afghanistan
[Tolo News] At least 18 cut-throats were killed and 15 others were maimed in NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
air assaults on Taliban hideouts on Saturday in Bargi Matal district of Nuristan province, Afghan police officials said.

"Based on intelligence reports indicating bully boy activities, NATO carried out an Arclight airstrike to remove them from the area," provincial police chief Zahid Nuristani said.

No civilian casualties were reported.

Taliban front man Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the deaths of 16 Death Eaters but claimed his forces had killed more than a dozen Afghan and NATO troops.

Nuristan is a mountainous region neighbouring Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Chitral...
and is regarded as a Taliban hotbed. Insurgents have recently increased their activities in several districts of the province.

#2  Can't agree, Jim. Kill 18 every day, and you eliminate over 6500 a year. That's pretty close to replacement limits. The more we kill, the fewer left who have the training to really fight, and the fewer left to breed. I wonder how many of the Taliban that actually took part in the fighting against the Russians are left? I'd bet not many, and they're all in Phakeistain.

#4  they're like roaches 18 is insignifigant.

Actually, they're not. There are lots of AFghan civilians who are not thrilled about having infidels running their country, but not that many who are willing to risk their lives acting on their sentiments. This is why our average casualty numbers are 1/40 of Vietnam, where we were losing about 600 dead a month.

Haqqani Network to Support Afghanistan Peace Process
Kind of. By the time they get done defining it, it's like the Palestinians negotiating peace with Israel: surrender totally and we'll agree to your terms.
[Tolo News] The Haqqani network, one of the most notorious terrorist group in Afghanistan, will participate in peace negotiations with the Afghan government and the US if the Taliban want it to, Sirajuddin Haqqani, the network's leader told Rooters news agency on Saturday.

Haqqani said the group had in the past rejected a number of peace overtures because it felt that the US and the Afghan government were attempting to divide various myrmidon factions.

The network no longer has sanctuaries in Pakistain because members feel secure inside Afghanistan, Haqqani said.

The US blamed the network for Tuesday's rocket attacks on the American Embassy in Kabul.

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta
...current SecDef, previously Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Panetta served as President Bill Clinton's White House Chief of Staff from 1994 to 1997 and was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1977 to 1993....
on Thursday said the existence of Haqqani safe havens in Pakistain is unacceptable and vowed he will not let these attacks in Afghanistan continue.

Africa Horn
Pirates say holding British hostage in central Somalia
[Arab News] A British woman, who was kidnapped in Kenya after her husband was killed, is in the hands of Somali pirates in the center of the lawless Horn of Africa nation, pirates and an elder in the region said on Sunday.

Unidentified gunnies raided the remote Kiwayu Safari Village in the early hours of last Sunday, shooting dead publishing executive David Tebbutt, 58, and taking hostage his wife Judith, 56, before escaping by boat.

"My colleagues brought her. I am among the ones guarding her ... Although you can understand the fatigue from her face, she is healthy," pirate Mohamed, one of the gang guarding the Briton, told Rooters.

An elder in central Somalia confirmed the Briton's arrival.

"A convoy of pirates reached here two hours ago, they brought the British lady. We are very disappointed, we do not want our area to be a place for keeping kidnapped innocent people," local elder Abdullahi Ali Abukar told Rooters on Sunday.

Fighting erupts in Bani Walid
[Dawn] Powerful kabooms and sustained machinegun fire rattled the Libyan desert stronghold of Bani Walid on Sunday as fighters loyal to Muammar Qadaffy
...Proof that a madman with money will be politely received for at least 42 years...
shelled positions held by interim government forces around the town.

Forces backed by Libya's new rulers said fighting had continued overnight on the outskirts of Bani Walid, one of the ousted leader's last bastions, as their opponents put up strong resistance.

"We fought all night. We have surrounded the city from all sides with the range of 40 km (25 miles)," anti-Qadaffy field commander Absalim Gnuna told Rooters at the northern gate of Bani Walid.

"Most areas north of the central valley are clear. It is a big fight," he said, as his fighters squatted behind walls and vehicles to shield themselves from heavy shell fire.

[An Nahar] The unveiling of a new Libyan government due on Sunday has been put off "indefinitely," Mahmoud Jibril, the number two official in the National Transitional Council (NTC), said.

"The announcement of a new transitional government has been postponed indefinitely in order to finalize consultations," Jibril told a news conference in the eastern city of Benghazi.

"I hope that the consultations will be over quickly," he said.

Arabia
At least 15 killed in anti-Saleh march in Yemen
[Dawn] At least 15 protesters were killed in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Sunday, when gunfire broke out at one of the biggest demonstrations against President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower...
in recent months, a Rooters witness said.

Scores were maimed when security forces opened fire on the crowds and sprayed them with tear gas as tens of thousands spilled out of Change Square, where many youths have camped out, demanding an end to Saleh's 33-year rule, a Rooters witness said.

Dozens of men were slumped on the ground, overcome by tear gas inhalation. Men on cycle of violences and ambulances whisked them away from the scene.

The Defence Ministry said on its website protesters threw petrol bombs, setting a police car ablaze. It blamed leading Islamist opposition party, Islah, for opening fire on the march.

Frustrated by Saleh's tenacity and their failure to dislodge him, protesters are seeking to ratchet up demonstrations, which have dragged into their eighth month.

"Escalation, escalation," they chanted, flooding side streets where there were large numbers of security forces and armed anti-Saleh rustics, who have appointed themselves as defenders of Yemen's protest movement.

Earlier on Sunday, fighting broke out in a northern district of Sanaa, the latest breach of an uneasy ceasefire between rustics opposed to Saleh and troops loyal to him.

Shelling could be heard near the home of a prominent anti-Saleh tribal leader in the Hasaba district, the site of weeks of fighting. The family of Sadeq al-Ahmar said the Republican Guard, commanded by Saleh's son, had shelled their house.

Saleh, recovering in Soddy Arabia from a June liquidation attempt, is holding on to power despite international pressure to quit and eight months of protests against his 33-year rule which have bought the impoverished Arab state to the brink of civil war.

The United States and Soddy Arabia fear unrest in Yemen will embolden al Qaeda's Yemen-based regional wing to launch strikes in the region and beyond.

On Thursday, mediators from neighbouring Soddy Arabia intervened to help end the street fighting, which was the fiercest in recent weeks, diplomatic sources said.

Britain
Seven arrested in Birmingham in major terror raids
Six men and one woman have been tossed in the clink in Birmingham as part of a large counter-terrorism operation intended "to ensure public safety", police said.

The suspects were jugged at or near their homes overnight on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism in the UK.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said six men, aged between 25 and 32, were taken into custody by unarmed officers in the Moseley, Sparkbrook, Sparkhill, Ward End and Balsall Heath areas of Birmingham between 11.30pm last night and 1am today.

ln addition, a 22-year-old woman was tossed in the clink at 6.30 this morning on suspicion of failing to disclose information, contrary to the Terrorism Act 2000.

Although the nature of suspected offences has not been disclosed, the arrests are not believed to have any connection to the Liberal Democrats' autumn conference, which is currently taking place at Birmingham's International Convention Centre.

A West Midlands Police statement said: "Searches are now being conducted by specialist teams at these and seven other properties in the city -- six domestic and one commercial.

"The suspects are being held for questioning at a cop shoppe in the West Midlands Police area."

Police are believed to be searching a house in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham. Plain-clothes coppers and forensic teams could be seen at a house in Turner Road. Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
a grey estate car was covered with tarpaulin and driven away on the back of a flatbed truck in nearby Ladypool Road.

Europe
Swedish security police raid mosque in Goteborg
[Arab News] Sweden's security police raided the administrative office of a mosque in the country's second largest city, the force said on Sunday.

Security police spokeswoman Sirpa Franzen said Thursday's raid against the Bellevue Mosque in Goteborg was prompted by prosecutor Agnetha Hilding Qvarnstrom, who heads the investigation against three men tossed in the calaboose on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

Mosque officials weren't immediately available for comments.

Franzen declined to say if the raid was connected to the arrests and wouldn't give more details. The force only confirmed the operation, following a report in a GT tabloid.

The men, of Somali and Iraqi origin, were tossed in the calaboose as around 400 people were evacuated from an arts center and were initially suspected of plotting a terrorist attack. However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
the charges were later changed to preparing murder and the prosecutor said it related only to one individual.
Murder, like tax evasion, is easier to get a conviction on...
The arrests and evacuation of the arts center -- which is located beneath the city's landmark half-mile (930-meter) Alvsborg bridge -- spread jitters across Sweden, which saw a jacket wallah blow himself up on a pedestrian street in Stockholm in December.

India-Pakistan
Acid attacks: 7 women burned in two days
Such a lovely culture.
A total of seven women suffered acid attacks in the past two days in Faisalabad in separate incidents.

According to police officials, a first-year student suffered serious burns after being attacked in the limits of Police Station City Jaranwala. First year student Tayyiba was on her way back home from a local tuition academy when students Ali Raza and Hamza allegedly chased her and threatened her life.

"Both boys go to the same college as me and they were heckling me for not wearing a dupatta on my head. They tried to grab me and when I yelled at them they attacked me with acid," Tayyiba told police officials before being admitted to the hospital.

"She said that both men had said she 'deserved for her face to be ruined because she had not covered her head'," Station House Officer Malik Zafar Iqbal said.

The victim's parents filed a complaint and approached the parents of the accused.

"Instead of asking for forgiveness they opened fire on us and we barely managed to escape," Tayyiba's father Asad said. Area police filed a case on the report of Adnan, a brother of the victim, after having registered a case against the accused under Section 324, 511, & 34 PPC but no arrest has been made so far.
Arrests never do seem to get made in these cases, do they...
In another incident, a man and his two friends allegedly threw acid at his wife and five other women from her family. According to police officials, Chak 132 GB Dijkot resident Umar Hayat attacked his wife Nabila and five women of her family after she refused to leave with him.

"The couple had quarrelled after he beat her several times. She came home saying she feared for her life and when he came to take her back she refused to leave," Nabila's father Muhammad Munir said. "He told her he would never hit her again if she left with him and when she refused he threw acid on her and all the other women," he added.

Umar also attacked five women of Nabila's family, who refused to let him take her from their house near the Nawan police station. Neighbours said that Umar Hayat had made several attempts to reconcile with his wife Nabila and had also approached elders and a Panchayat to intervene on his behalf.

"She refused to return with him. She kept saying that he beat her and that she did not want to put her life in danger," a neighbour Manzoor said. On Thursday night, Umar Hayat, along with two of his accomplices, forced entry into the house of his in-laws by breaking the door when the family were asleep. Hayat sprayed acid on his wife Nabila, sisters-in-law Shakila Munir and Razia, mother in-law Riaz Bibi and Nazia, the wife of his brother in-law. The victims sustained serious injuries to their face and bodies.

All the burnt victims have been admitted to the Gojra Civil Hospital and are reportedly in serious condition. Three of the victims have sustained over 80 percent burns and are in critical condition.

"Three women are in critical condition and their faces have been completely burnt but the others are in recovery and have been admitted to the burns unit," said Dr Rizwan Basheer. The condition of Skakila Munir is stated to be serious and she has been shifted to Allied Hospital.

Police officials have filed a report regarding the burning of Skalila and her family, on the request of her father Munir Ahmad. A case vide FIR No. 207/2011 under Sections 324 and 336 PPC have been registered against Umar Hayat and his two other accomplices, but no arrest has been reported so far.
Zounds, another case with no arrest despite the perp being named in the local news rag.

#1  The only way to put a dent in this is with a vicious blood feud against the attackers. Hopefully to capture them and so hideously torture and murder them that it sends a message. *That* might finally stimulate the police to action.

#2  May I modestly propose a certain proportionality in response to these attacks?

Spraying acid on the penises and testicles of the offenders multiple times over the course of a day or two, giving them time to contemplate cause and effect until those organs were rendered unusable, would be a reasonable start. JMHO

#6  This sort of thing was unknown to myself prior to my visiting the internet. Having more exposure to this sort of thing and the cultures that support it I can only conclude women are something like a possession. Now, not in every case. Those boys knew they could get away with it. Honor killings within families even. The women seem resigned to their fate. The governments and religion must address this. Outside intervention only at the top. Person to person efforts will fail. They will cling to the old ways - even the women.

Pakistan troops battle Taliban for US drone debris
[Dawn] Pak soldiers battled Taliban fighters in an attempt to seize precious debris from a suspected US drone that crashed in a rugged tribal area near the Afghan border, Pak intelligence officials and faceless myrmidons said Sunday.

The Taliban said they shot down the unmanned aircraft, which crashed Saturday night near Jangara village in the South Wazoo tribal area.

Pak intelligence officials said they were not certain whether Taliban fire or technical problems brought down the drone. Drone crashes have happened before in Pakistain, but they are rare.

Pakistain first learned of the crash by intercepting Taliban radio communications, said the intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The debris was first seized by the Taliban. Several hours later, the Mighty Pak Army sent soldiers in to wrest it out of krazed killer hands, sparking a fight with the Taliban in which three faceless myrmidons were killed, said the officials. Three faceless myrmidons and two soldiers were also maimed in the clash, they said.

The intelligence officials said the troops were successful in seizing the debris, but Pak Taliban capo Azmatullah Diwana claimed his fighters repelled the soldiers. The army then sent helicopter gunships into the area where the faceless myrmidons were holding the debris, Diwana told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named by telephone from Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

Nawab Khan, a government official in South Waziristan, confirmed the drone crash and the subsequent clash between faceless myrmidons and army troops. But he did not know whether the soldiers were successful in seizing the debris.

Neither the Mighty Pak Army nor the US Embassy responded to request for comment.

The United States uses unmanned surveillance aircraft in its war against the Taliban in Afghanistan to monitor faceless myrmidons in Pakistain, from where Al-Qaeda and Taliban-linked fighters launch attacks in Afghanistan.

It also uses Predator armed drones to launch missile attacks aimed at faceless myrmidons in Pakistain's unstable northwestern border areas.

US drone crashes are very rare in Pakistain, but a surveillance drone equipped with a camera crashed in southwestern Pakistain on August 25.

In September 2008, rustics in South Waziristan claimed to have shot down another surveillance drone in Jalal village, near the Afghan border.

The Mighty Pak Army said at the time that it was investigating that incident but did not make the results of the probe public.

The US drone campaign is deeply unpopular among an anti-American Pak public and the government has publicly demanded an end to the attacks.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
in private, Pak military and civilian leaders are thought to co-operate with the programme and Washington says it has been successful in eliminating a number of Al-Qaeda- and Taliban-linked faceless myrmidons in Pakistain.

Around two dozen drone strikes have been reported in Pakistain since elite US forces killed Al-Qaeda chief the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now sometimes referred to as Mister Bones...
in a suburban home near Pakistain's main military academy in Abbottabad, close to the capital, on May 2.

The raid humiliated Pakistain and prompted allegations of incompetence and complicity in sheltering bin Laden.

Pakistain is seen as a key ally for the United States in its fight against militancy, but relations soured after the bin Laden raid, which both countries say was carried out without Islamabad being warned.

Eighteen killed as militants attack Khyber checkpost
[Dawn] At least eighteen people were killed when Talibs attacked a checkpost manned by pro-government primitives and security forces in northwest Pakistain, officials said on Sunday.

Armed with assault rifles and hand grenades, the bully boyz killed four ethnic Pashtun rustics and a paramilitary soldier in the late Saturday attack.

Members of a tribal militia and security forces retaliated, killing 10 Death Eaters, said a senior government official in the Khyber region near the Afghan border, where the incident took place.

"A large number of weapons from the bully boyz were also confiscated," said the official, Rehan Khattak.

Pakistain's Taliban have stepped up attacks on Pashtun tribes who have raised militias to help security forces.

At least 40 people were killed and 68 maimed when a jacket wallah attacked a funeral of a member of a pro-government tribe in the northwestern Lower Dir district on Thursday.

Militants also grabbed credit for an attack on a school bus on Tuesday which killed five people, saying the children on the bus were from a pro-government tribe.

The Taliban are also holding more than 20 young men hostage from a pro-government tribe in an area straddling the Afghan border and have demanded the release of scores of prisoners and an end to support of military offensives against them.

Pak authorities have been encouraging the Pashtun tribes to revive traditional militias to counter the growing number of bully boyz fighting the Pak state.

Under a centuries-old tradition, the tribes raise the militias, or lashkars, in their semi-autonomous regions to fight criminal gangs and enforce their tribal codes.

Qadri admits in court to killing Taseer
[Dawn] Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri confessed in the Anti-Terrorism Court on Saturday that he had killed Punjab governor Salman Taseer in Islamabad for his `blasphemous` statements.
... but he did not shoot the deputy too...
ATC-II Judge Syed Pervez Ali Shah recorded Qadri`s statement during an in-camera trial at Adiyala Jail.

Qadri`s counsel Raja Shuja-ur-Rehman told news hounds outside the prison that his client admitted to killing Mr Taseer and that nobody had instigated him to do so.

He said that Qadri had also submitted a written statement of 40 pages, containing verses from the holy Koran, quotations from the life of the Prophet (PTUI!)'>(PTUI!)
), four decisions of the Caliphs and views of Hanafi, Shafai, Maliki, Hanbali and Jafria schools of thought from the Islamic jurisprudence about blasphemy under section 265-F (5) of the CrPC.

Qadri contended that Salman Taseer had committed blasphemy under these references and, every person who committed such act or supported a blasphemer or doubted that the punishment of blasphemer was unjustified or practically tried to abolish sentence for commission of blasphemy, was liable to death.

The defence lawyer said the prosecution raised no objection to the statement. The judge, therefore, admitted the statement and made it a part of court record.

Raja Shuja said that Salman Taseer was a national leader and his personal conduct was public property and every citizen had a right to question a leader`s conduct.

Strict security measures were made in and outside the jail on the occasion.

The judge adjourned the hearing till Sept 24.

Taliban to carry out more such attacks, he said that police and security forces were fully prepared to fight against faceless myrmidons from anywhere. JSQM chief released on bail
[Dawn] A sessions court on Saturday granted bail to the chief of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz in two cases of possessing illicit weapons.
The progress being that he was arrested. The first step of a stepwise progression is slightly better than no improvement at all.
The JSQM chief, Bashir Qureshi, and his aide, Badruddin, filed their bail applications before Additional District and Sessions Judge (Malir) Munawar Sultana. They were sent to prison for 14 days by a judicial magistrate on Friday.

The court heard arguments from both sides and allowed the plea. The court granted bail to the JSQM chief in two cases against a surety bond of Rs100,000 each.

The other applicant was also enlarged on bail against the surety of Rs100,000.

A panel of four lawyers represented the applicants in court and argued that Section 103 (search to be made in presence of witnesses occupant of place searched may attend) of the criminal procedure code was violated as no independent witness was taken at the time of the arrest and the recovery.

They contended that all the weapons found in the possession of the applicants were legal and the licences and permits of the weapons in question had already been produced before a judicial magistrate and they were handed over to the police for verification.

The lawyers prayed to the court to allow the bail applications.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
the public prosecutor opposed the pleas and argued that it was a case of further inquiry as a report about the authenticity of the licences and permits produced by the applicants was awaited.

A JSQM activist submitted the documents of a vehicle for the purpose of surety and the judge ordered its verification.

However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
the applicants` counsel submitted an undertaking in court that the documents for the surety were genuine and they would produce the applicants in court if the same was found fake.

The court issued their release order directing the jail authorities to release the suspects if not wanted in any other case.

Pakistain Rangers, Sindh, had jugged the JSQM chief along with his two aides -- Shiraz Ahmed Subhani and Badruddin -- on Sept 15 near his Gulshan-i-Hadeed residence and the following day a judicial magistrate sent Mr Qureshi and Mr Badr to prison on 14-day judicial remand. Their third associate, Shiraz, was released the same day on a personal bond.

According to the prosecution, the JSQM chief along with his two aides were taken into custody during snap checking near his house by the paramilitary soldiers, who allegedly found illicit weapons in their possession. Later, weapons were also recovered from the residence of the nationalist leader, it added.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Two men indicted for south Tel Aviv terror attack in August
Charges against Mohammed Bin Said Zofran from Qalqilya, 21, the main defendant in attack that injured 8, include attempted murder, robbery.

Indictments were filed on Sunday in the Tel Aviv District Court against two men in connection with a terror attack in south Tel Aviv in August.

Eight people were maimed in the attack, in which 21-year-old Mohammed Bin Said Zofran carjacked a taxi at knifepoint and rammed it into border coppers Or Hakim and Albert Sabah and a civilian bystander, Itay Weinberg, before stabbing several others.

Zofran shouted "Allahu Akbar" ['God is great'] as he swerved into border police outside the crowded Haoman 17 nightclub on Salameh Street. He went on to brutally stab a nightclub security guard before being subdued by nightclub manager Yitzhak Assaraf and two more guards, Oleg Chritov and Grigory Sokolov. The three men were maimed in the struggle.

Zofran, originally from Qalqilya, is charged with attempted murder, injury with serious intent, robbery, illegal residency and conspiracy to commit a crime.

A second defendant, 21-year-old south Tel Aviv resident Mohammed Bin Saddam Hussein Biari, is charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, failure to prevent a crime and destroying evidence.

In addition to giving details of the south Tel Aviv terror attack, the indictment also reveals how Zofran and Biari had plotted to commit several other attacks against Jewish civilians and Israeli security forces.

According to the indictment, Zofran first decided to carry out a terror attack against Israeli security forces in 2009, after Operation Cast Lead.

In 2011, the Qalqilya native was living in Israel illegally, making a living by doing odd jobs, and sleeping in an abandoned apartment next to the Siksik mosque in Jaffa.

While praying at the mosque, Zofran met Biari, an Arab Israeli from Jaffa. The two began to plan a terror attack.

By July 2011, Zofran had already begun physical training for the terror attack. He practiced how to use a knife and a stick in his apartment.

On 12th August, during Ramadan, Zofran and Biari  hatched a plot to stab Israeli security forces and civilian Jewish Israelis near the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. They bought two knives and traveled by bus to the capital.

Zofran and Biari stayed at the al-Aqsa mosque for two weeks. After speaking to a holy man at the mosque, however, Zofran told his friend that he had decided to act alone and would return to Jaffa to become a "martyr". Before he left, however, Zofran used Biari's cellphone to record a short film of himself for his parents.

On August 28th, Zofran went to the new Central Bus Station in Tel Aviv, planning to stab a soldier, steal his gun and shoot border police. When he failed to find a suitable victim, he noticed a tractor on a building site on Yedidia Frenkel Street in the Florentin neighborhood. Zofran decided to steal the tractor and use it to run over soldiers.

That night, Zofran returned to the construction site but could not find the tractor. Instead, he decided to hijack a taxi and use it to attack border police standing at the nearby junction between Abarbanel and Salameh streets.

Biari was tossed in the clink shortly afterwards, after he had deleted Zofran's movie from his cellphone.

The Tel Aviv District Attorney's Office requested that the two suspects be remanded in jug for the duration of the proceedings against them.

5 Arab-Israelis indicted for plotting terror attacks
Charges of Daburiyya residents include conspiracy to carry out attacks on Jews, explosives manufacturing, and computer hacking.

Five residents of Daburiya, east of Nazareth, were locked away this month on suspicion of plotting to carrying out terrorist attacks on several targets, police announced on Thursday, following the lifting of a media ban. The arrests were carried out by the northern police district's central unit in coordination with the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency). Some of the suspects studied at the University of Haifa University or at the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology.

"They planned to attack an IDF soldier and a border policeman who lived in the village and steal their weapons. They selected 'candidates' from which they planned to steal weapons and carry out future attacks," police said. One of the suspects considered working at a government office or a strategic factory for the purpose of planning an attack, a police front man said

The suspects are affiliated with the Salafiya Jihadiya group, police added.

Police said one suspect, Aslam Atrash, set up an Internet forum in which he published articles supporting Salafiya Jihadiya and its Death Eater stances." Salafiya Jihadiya members urge followers to launch armed attacks on Israel, the West and Arab-Mohammedan countries deemed as being insufficiently religious.

Atrash is also suspected of being in contact with Sheikh Nathm Sakafa of Nazareth, who police said heads the Ansar Allah organization in the area, a group that was banned by Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

The suspects also confessed to viewing online videos instructing them on firearms training and how to assemble explosives. Sketches of electric circuits used for assembling bombs were downloaded by one of the suspects as preparations for "future attacks," police added. In the short term, the suspects planned to attack a local cop shoppe, attack security personnel and steal their firearms.

Security forces said the cell posed a clear security threat due to its extreme ideology, which was fed by "content downloaded from the Internet, and the readiness of Israeli civilians to act violently within Israel and against its institutions."

In 2009, Yafim Weinstein, of Upper Nazareth, was murdered by a terrorist cell affiliated with the Salafiya Jihadiya network.

The Northern District Attorney's Office issued indictments for five residents of Daburiya who were locked away last week for involvement in plotting terrorist attacks. These included indictments against Ibrahim and Ismail Actilat, charging them with a conspiracy to carry out attacks against Jews. Ibrahim was also charged with attempting to manufacture explosives.

In addition, the Northern District Attorney's Office announced on Thursday it had filed last week indictments against three men, Islam Atrash, Mehdi Saleh and Shadi Ibrahim, also from Daburiya, for offenses including conspiracy, attempting to provide the means to commit a crime, and illegal entry into computer systems.

Their lawyer, Rafi Masalaha, said the affair was based on little more than phone records. "This started with accusations of setting up a terror cell and resulted in a minor indictment," Masalaha

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian opposition calls on Assad to end crackdown
[Arab News] Dozens of Syrian opposition members called on President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators. Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor...
Sunday to end his deadly six-month crackdown or face an escalation in peaceful protests, as security forces fired warning shots to disperse high school students calling for the regime's downfall.

The weekend meeting drew more than 200 opposition figures, including leading writer Michel Kilo and Hassan Abdul-Azim, who heads the outlawed Arab Socialist Democratic Union party. It was also notable because it took place inside Syria, rather than in a neighboring country, as most others have.

A statement released after the meeting called on Assad's regime to immediately end its "acts of repression," and it urged protesters to keep their movement peaceful and not be tempted to take up arms. The opposition members also stuck by an earlier position to oppose international intervention in Syria, though some protesters on the streets have called for unspecified outside help.

The Syrian uprising began in mid-March, amid the wave of protests in the Arab world that have toppled autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Assad has responded with force in a crackdown that the UN estimates has killed some 2,600 people.

Syria has one of the Middle East's most tightly controlled and repressive regimes. Its government is also a key regional player, thanks in part to its support for krazed killer groups like Hezbullies in Leb and the Paleostinian Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and its alliance with Iran.

The opposition consists of a variety of groups with often differing ideologies, including Islamists and secularists, and there have been many meetings of dissidents who say they represent the opposition. But most of those gatherings have been held in safer locations outside the country.

The weekend meeting was organized by a long-established group called the National Democratic Change.

Among its demands, it called on the government to order soldiers back to their barracks, allow peaceful demonstrations, bring to justice those responsible for the killing of protesters, and release all political detainees.

"A political solution cannot be achieved if the security and military solution doesn't stop...," the statement said.

Opposition figure Samir Aita, who spends much of his time in La Belle France, said the movement was open to dialogue with the regime, but only after a halt to the crackdown and the withdrawal of the army.

The 22-member Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
as well as Syria's neighbors and allies Iran and Turkey have called on Assad to halt the violence, but the Syrian president has not responded.

The Syrian army has been conducting operations in different parts of Syria since shortly after the uprising began. Syria claims thugs and foreign conspirators -- rather than genuine reform-seekers -- are behind the unrest.

Participants in the opposition gathering warned that unless the government takes steps to end the crisis, protests will escalate, including the possibility of general strikes and civil disobedience.

Also Sunday, dozens of students demonstrated in the Damascus

suburb of Kisweh on the first day of the school year in Syria.

At one high school, security forces had gun sex to disperse student protesters, according to an activist network called The Local Coordination Committees. No casualties were reported.

There were also protests at an elementary school in the area, where students shouted, "There will be no classes until the president is brought down," the activists said.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a boy succumbed to his wounds in the southern village of Sanamein two days after being shot by security forces.
