Afghanistan
Taliban 'abduct 21 Afghan tribal elders'
[Dawn] Talibs kidnapped 21 tribal elders in Afghanistan close to the Pak border whose relatives apparently work for the Afghan government and NATO, an official said Monday.

The incident happened eight days ago in Marawara, in the eastern province of Kunar, which borders Pakistain's lawless tribal district where Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked networks have carved out strongholds.

"The Taliban first called them for a meeting at a mosque and after a discussion, the Taliban took all the elders away to an unknown place," the local official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"Negotiations have started with the Taliban for their release, but have produced no result so far", he added.

Talibs have been leading a nine-year insurgency against the Western-backed Afghan government and foreign troops since the 2001 US-led invasion brought down their Islamist regime in Kabul.

A local Taliban capo identified as Qari Zia-ur-Rahman grabbed credit for the abduction by SMS to an AFP correspondent.

"The reason behind this act is that some relatives, sons and close family members of these men, work in the Afghan army, Afghan police and some with NATO", he explained.

"Unless these people do not resign their jobs with the army, police and NATO, we will not release the hostages", he added.

Afghan police and other local authorities refused to comment.
If anyone is wandering the area at night, let us wish them good hunting.

7 Private Security Firms Linked to Officials Disbanded
[Tolo News] Seven private security companies linked to some Afghan high-ranking officials were dissolved, a top official in Ministry of Interior Affairs said Monday. Officials said soon the disarmament process of the companies will begin.

Investigations have begun about 17 other private security firms after they were accused of being involved in some irregularities. The irregularities and allegations included tax evasion, over-employment and keeping more vehicles than allowed by the contracts.

Private security firms linked to top government officials and people close to President Karzai have caused widespread concerns among the officials that it would hamper the disbandment process of the companies.

"Seven private security firms have been disbanded after being identified as being linked to high-profile government officials," said Chief of Counter-Terrorism Department of Afghan Interior Ministry.

The seven newly-disbanded companies are part of the entire 52 licensed private companies.

Earlier as part of the disbandment process of private security firms, 57 illegal companies were banned and dissolved.

Nearly 3,000 heavy and small arms have been seized from the companies, which were believed to be causing violence and insecurity in the country.

Militant Commander Linked to Terrorists in Iran
[Tolo News] A turban commander jugged in Nimroz province has told Afghan officials of his links with faceless myrmidons in Iran.
Number Seven truncheons and mustache wax are now in short supply.
The jugged orc commander and his men have said they were persuaded in Zahidan of Iran to fight against foreign troops in Afghanistan.

They said there are other hard boyz living in Iran, who come to Afghanistan and escape back to Iran after carrying out attacks against foreign forces.

Videotaped confessions of the jugged hard boyz who are from Nimroz, Farah and Helmand provinces was put at the disposal of media by the Afghan Ministry of Interior.

"I studied at a religious school in Iran where someone named Khaled provoked me to perform jihad against Americans," Mullah Gul Ahmad, commander of the group, said.
That clearly worked out well.
The hard boyz have said they went to Helmand after getting affiliated with some terrorist groups in Iran.

Afghan officials have frequently expressed concern about orc attacks being guide from ouside of Afghan borders.

We tried to get a comment from the Iranian Embassy in Kabul, but without success.
They wouldn't even say, "No comment."
The jugged hard boyz are accused of being behind 10 orc attacks in Nimroz province.

"We are also trying to track those who have cooperated with this group in Nimroz," Head of MOI's Counter-terrorism Department, Sayed Abdul Ghafar Sayedzada, said.

In the recent weeks, Afghan officials have emphasised that bully boyz should be targeted in their sanctuaries.

Yesterday the Ministry of Interior said bully boyz have no training centres within Afghan territory.

Kunduz Province Cleared of Militants
[Tolo News] Afghan and foreign forces have cleared the northern Kunduz province of bully boys, officials said on Monday.

After Afghan and foreign forces continue operations in Dasht-e-Archi and Imam Saheb districts, the province is cleared of krazed killers, Abdul Rahman Sayedkheli, the police chief of Kunduz, said.

Soon more than 1,200 village police will be deployed in different parts of the province, he added.

North of Afghanistan, that has been hit by Taliban-led insurgency for some time now, has been the scene of some deadly terrorist attacks that have claimed lives of a large number of people.

Security transition process is expected to begin from the north, perhaps of some gains being made by Afghan forces in the fight against insurgency.

Officials believe that there are some specific circles hugely linked to insurgency in the north.

Dasht-e-Archi and Imam Saheb districts were among the highly insecure parts of Kunduz where gun-hung tough guys were active.

After heavy operations by Afghan and foreign forces in the province, a number of hard boyz laid down their weapons and joined the grinding of the peace processor.

Afghan forces will undertake full security responsibility by the end of 2014 when foreign forces will leave Afghanistan.

Somali soldier accidentally kills at least 17
[Emirates 24/7] At least 17 non-combatants were killed on Monday when a Somali government soldier fired on a crowd in Mogadishu, according to hospital sources and witnesses.

Witnesses said the soldier accidentally triggered an anti-aircraft machine gun after a dispute with other soldiers on a crowded street in the south of the Somali capital.
17 dead? I wonder if he accidentally reloaded a coupla times?
It is unclear what caused the dispute among the soldiers.
Less filling? Tastes great?
"There was a disaster in Mogadishu today. We have received around 56 injured people, 12 dead bodies and five others shuffled off the mortal coil at the hospital," Mohamed Yusuf, the director of Mogadishu's Madina hospital, told news hounds.

Defence Minister Abdihakin Mohamed Fiqi expressed regret over the incident and promised government assistance to the maimed.

"On behalf of the hapless Somali government, the president, his prime minister and the speaker, we are very sorry about the sad incident..," Fiqi said at the hospital.

"We will help the maimed and promise to bring those behind the brutal killing to justice," he added.

Sudanese vice president announces gov't acceptance of referendum results
(Xinhua) -- Sudanese Vice-President Ali Osman Mohamed Taha
... Father of the Janjaweed militias. Taha was responsible for handling the Darfur crisis from 2003 to 2004. He was instrumental in releasing Musa Hilal from prison in 2003, assigning him authority to recruit and command a militia group, which became known as "Quick, Light and Horrible Forces of Misteriha." ...
on Monday announced Sudanese government's acceptance of south Sudan referendum results which indicated that around 99 percent of the voters have voted in favor of the region's separation.

"We declare our acceptance of the referendum's preliminary results which were announced yesterday by the referendum commission and we will directly embark on the arrangements which will follow this phase," said Taha at a presser here Monday.

"We hope this positive spirit, which characterized all stages of the referendum process, would lead to containing tensions that could surround some of the outstanding issues," he added.

Taha further reiterated continuation of cooperation and coordination between north and south Sudan, saying that "the separation, even if it has its constitutional and political consequences, the relation and common interests will remain standing and will not cease."

The Sudanese vice-president stressed that north and south Sudan were really willing to find a political settlement for the Abyei issue and prevent any unilateral solutions, saying that "we have agreed that the current administrative, political and security arrangements at Abyei would continue."

"It has also been agreed that joint forces would be dispatched in Abyei, besides removing the south Sudan police forces which recently entered the area and that the Abyei Administration would remain until a political agreement is reached."

Taha, as well, disclosed that the north and the south have agreed to exclude the option of double nationality, saying that " each state will have the right to issue a law organizing the nationality and how it could be obtained and to avoid having persons with no legal identification documents."

"We have agreed that there would be flexibility regarding presence of northerners in the south and vise versa and to protect them and their properties until their status is adjusted. There are many arrangements needed to be made to adjust the conditions of the employees at the public service and the regular forces," he said.

The South Sudan Referendum Commission (SSRC) on Sunday announced south Sudan's preliminary results which showed that 98. 83 percent of the southern Sudanese voters have voted in favor of the region's separation and only 1. 17 percent voted for unity.

The final results of the referendum are expected to be announced on Feb. 7 in case there were no appeals; otherwise they will be announced on Feb. 14.

According to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, there would be a transitional period until July 9 to pave the way for transition to separation of south Sudan if the southern Sudanese opted for separation in the referendum.

Student beaten to death in Khartoum clashes
[Al Jazeera] A student who was beaten by police during violent anti-government demonstrations in Khartoum, Sudan's capital, has died of his wounds in Omdurman hospital, protesters have said.

"Mohammed Abdulrahman, from Ahlia University, died last night in Omdurman hospital as a result of his ... wounds after he was beaten by police," said an activist who took part in Sunday's protests.

"This morning (Monday) both Ahlia University and the Islamic University of Omdurman have been closed by a government decision," said the activist, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Two other students said Abdulrahman had fallen during the clashes and was taken to the hospital, where medics informed them that he had died early on Monday.

'Martyr'

Sunday's demonstrations followed calls by the "30 January" Facebook group for Sudanese youth to take to the streets and stage peaceful anti-government rallies across Sudan.

The Facebook group, which has around 17,000 members, confirmed Abdulrahman had died, referring to him as a "martyr" who followed in the footsteps of another student killed in the October 1964 popular uprising that toppled the military regime then in power.

"Al-Gorashy was a martyr for us. And you are our martyr now, Mohammed Abdulrahman," it said in large red lettering.

Protesters on Sunday were confronted by a heavy police presence in different parts of Khartoum and Omdurman, and in El-Obeid, aabout 600km west of the capital.

The ensuing clashes resulted in at least 64 arrests and left many wounded.

Ali Osman Taha, Sudan's vice-president, on Monday echoed earlier statements by senior Sudanese officials that the government does not fear popular protest of the kind that has shaken the government in Egypt but said such actions must be "within the law".

"The government is not afraid of anything. Freedom exists within the law, and anyone who wants to express himself has to do so within the law," Taha told a news conference in Khartoum.

Another senior member of the ruling National Congress Party branded Sunday's protests "illegal and isolated".

"These protests were illegal and isolated, and the political parties behind them were acting in an illegal way and this is not accepted," Rabie Abdul Ati told the AFP news agency.

'Revolution against dictatorship!'

The demonstrations came after nearly a week of turmoil in Egypt, and coincided with the first complete preliminary results from this month's vote on independence for south Sudan, which confirmed a landslide for secession.

In Omdurman, just across the Nile from Khartoum, around 1,000 demonstrators shouted slogans against Omar al-Bashir, the president, and hurled rocks at riot police, who retaliated with tear gas and batons.

At the medical faculty of Khartoum University, security officers tried to prevent about 300 student protesters from leaving the campus, but they eventually forced their way out onto the street, shouting: "Revolution against dictatorship!"

Police and security officers attacked them with batons, arresting several and forcing the students back inside the university compound, which was later surrounded by more than 20 police trucks.

Widespread economic and political discontent has provoked sporadic street protests in north Sudan in recent weeks, with the security forces maintaining tight control in Khartoum.

Muslim Brotherhood Wants War With Israel
Of course they do. That doesn't mean the Egyptian Army is stupid enough to listen to them.
Not now. But what will happen when the Muslim Brotherhood is the government?
The Egyptian generals aren't too fond of the Brotherhood. Now the captains and lieutenants, that's a different story, so it isn't clear which way the army will go. But even the most religious junior officer understands that the Egyptian army can't match up to the Israelis right now.
Mohamed Ghanem, one of the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, calls Egypt to stop pumping gas to Israel and prepare the Egyptian army for a war with it's eastern neighbor.

Speaking with Iranian television station Al-Alam, Mohamed Ghanem blamed Israel for supporting Hosni Mubarak's regime. Ghanem also said that the Egyptian police and army won't be able to stop the Muslim Brotherhood movement.
The real news here is that Ghanem has easy access to Iranian TV, and that the Iranians are quoting a Sunni hard boy. Any questions as to the relationship between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Mad Mullahs™? Anyone? Bueller?
There are doubts about the loyalty of the Egyptian army to president Mubarak. If the brotherhood takes control over Egypt, it will be very messy from the whole region.

#3  AFAIAC, religious groups keep this animosity towards Israel alive just to keep the masses distracted from what's really going on with their crappy systems of government.

Give them a lollipop in the form of the chance to attack Israel, and the people will grab at it, thereby installing whoever was in a position to offer it, in this case, the MB. After they are in power, they can backpedal all they want to and it will be too late for the idiots who put them in power.

#11  There are a few dozen Egyptian soldiers who have died at the hands of Hamas (maybe one or two officers)

Similarly there are thousands (maybe 10s of thousands) of soldiers who have been harrassed, called names, spit on, fired at, etc. by Hamas.

The Egyptian Army will be a stabilizing force.

However, as in the case of Turkey, a determined civilian government can, over time, imposed its own ideologues into positions.

As far as the Moslem Brotherhood, their relationship with Hamas is not peachy dandy (the MB accused Hamas of assisting in attacks on Egyptian soil). There is also some tension and factions within the MB. Most interestingly, the MB has a policy of renouncing violence while preaching Jihad (yes that's weird).

Yes, but most also know that the Israelis have at least as good on their side. Fortunately, the senior Egyptian leadership still knows that a one on one war with Israel will not go in their favor as their troops are poorly trained and poorly lead.

It may be less an issue of ethos than one of budget. A lot of Third World armies are funded sufficiently to present a formidable facade to internal opponents, and no more. We are able to do maintenance because we have the parts to do it. Parts require money. Most Third World armies aren't funded to that extent. Many have to cannibalize existing equipment just to continue training in peacetime.

I read once upon a time that an American Sgt knows more about how a tank runs than an Egyptian Colonel because the American Colonel doesn't horde the knowledge as part of his power. That may no longer be true but it seems to be an issue with the third world in general.

250,000 protesters gather in Cairos Tahrir Square
[Jerusalem Post Front Page] Around 250,000 protesters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square Monday afternoon as anti-government protests continued for the seventh day, the pan-Arab broadcaster Al-Jazeera reported.

Protesters ignored the state-imposed curfew which began at 3 p.m. as a coalition of opposition groups called for a million people to take to the streets Tuesday to demand the removal of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the clearest sign yet that a unified leadership was emerging for Egypt's powerful but disparate protest movement.

Earlier Monday, Al-Jazeera reported that six of its journalists were in Egyptian custody after authorities ordered the closure of the network's Cairo office. By mid-afternoon, the network reported via Twitter that the six were released but that authorities had seized their equipment.

The Qatar-based network said the journalists were working for its English-language channel -- a sister operation to the flagship Arabic service.

The detentions came a day after Egyptian authorities shut Al-Jazeera's office, complaining its round-the-clock coverage was slanted toward protesters and could encourage more unrest which has reached its seventh day.

Al-Jazeera denounced the closure as an attempt to muzzle open reporting as anti-government demonstrations and protests continued. The network had managed to continue coverage in Egypt with fixed-position cameras and reports by phone.

On Monday morning, Egyptian helicopters were sighted flying above Tahrir Square, CNN reported.

Egyptian soldiers and armored tanks continued their presence on city streets, CNN said and Al-Jazeera reported that the military presence in downtown Cairo "just keeps getting stricter day by day; there's more roadblocks, more barbed wire, there's more restrictions on who can move about and TV cameras are more restricted."

In an online audio posting on the network's Twitter feed, Al-Jazeera "has confirmed that regular police are redeploying in the city, they're back on the streets...they were seen at a police station...on the west side of the Nile, southwest of central Cairo."

An Al-Jazeera correspondent said the police were spotted "at a police station where the civilians on the street reportedly were not actually unhappy to see them. They were shaking hands and talking casually, perhaps happily...which might not make immediate sense since these are the people who are blamed for the deadly violence that racked the city just days ago but that's what our crews are seeing."

A leading Muslim Brotherhood official told The Associated Press that the fundamentalist movement wants to form a committee of opposition groups along with Nobel laureate and leading reform advocate Mohamed ElBaradei as a way of uniting the disparate groups calling for the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

Saad el-Katatni said that his group has not selected ElBaradei to represent it.

The outlawed Muslim Brotherhood is Egypt's largest opposition movement, and wants to form an Islamist state in the most populous Arab nation.

The police, which before the revolt could be seen on nearly every corner, melted away Friday, giving way to looting and arson. Gangs of thugs have cleared out supermarkets, shopping malls and stores, as well as luxury homes and apartments in affluent residential areas in the suburbs. On Monday, police were beginning to redeploy in many neighborhoods.

Mubarak shuffles Cabinet but protesters say 'Go!'
[Arab News] Egypt named a new government on Monday, appointing new finance and interior ministers as part of a revamped Cabinet designed to defuse the most serious challenge to geriatric President Hosni Mubarak's rule in three decades.

State television said Mohamed Hussein Tantawi was promoted to deputy prime minister alongside his role as defense minister.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit remains foreign minister.

Samir Mohamed Radwan was named finance minister.

Samiha Fawzi Ibrahim was named trade minister.

Gen. Mahmoud Wagdy, previously head of Cairo criminal investigations department and also a former head of prisons, was named the new interior minister.

The new line-up of Cabinet ministers announced on state television included stalwarts of Mubarak's regime but purged several of the prominent businessmen who held economic posts and have engineered the country's economic liberalization policies the past decades.

The longest-serving Cabinet minister, Culture Minister Farouq Hosni, was replaced by Gaber Asfour, a widely respected literary figure.

Egypt's most famous archaeologist, Zahi Hawass, was named state minister for antiquities, a new post.

Military calls Egyptian people's demands 'legitimate'
[Dawn] The Egyptian people's demands are "legitimate,"its all-powerful military said on Monday, vowing not to crush mass anti-government protests called for Tuesday.

"To the great people of Egypt, your armed forces, acknowledging the legitimate rights of the people ... have not used and will not use force against the Egyptian people," it said in a statement.

A military front man, quoted by Egyptian state television and the official MENA news agency, added that peaceful freedom of expression was guaranteed for all.

"Freedom of expression by peaceful means is everyone's right. The armed forces are aware of and recognise the legitimate demands of the honourable people," it said, in several references to the "legitimacy" of the people's demands.

"The presence of the armed forces on the street is for your good and for your safety and security and it will not use force against this great people."

Political analyst Diaa Rashwan told AFP: "This means the army has now taken control." For a seventh day, protesters flooded downtown Cairo on Monday, rejecting a new government under geriatric President Hosni Mubarak in the biggest challenge ever to his three decades in power.

Organisers announced an indefinite general strike and promised a "march of a million" in the capital on Tuesday, and in the second city Alexandria, after a week of revolt in which at least 125 people have been killed and thousands hurt.

American Troops in Middle of Egyptian Unrest
American troops have been stationed in Egypt for many years, performing a number of different missions. The protests, which are taking place throughout that nation and in its capital, Cairo, may affect both these mission and the troops involved. Little public information is available. #2  Yes, but the cultural influence our military has had on the Egyptian military is probably why they haven't been hosing the crowd.

Though they would prefer not to, the Egyptian military have enough respect from the public to maintain order in the absence of government, until new elections can be called.

#4  reports of Egyptian Army units moving into the Sinai in violation of the peace treaty.

There are several different reports that I've seen about events in the Sinai. I have no idea if they are rumours or straight reports.

1. Hamas is moving out of the Gaza Strip on orders from the Muslim Brotherhood to open another front against the government, and Egyptian troops are moving to drive them back behind the security wall.

2. Bedouins are taking territory. (I don't understand that one. It's not as though anyone would let them keep it.)

3. Unlike the fairly peaceful demonstrations in the main cities of Egypt-on-the-Nile, the demonstrations in the cities of the Sinai are violent, armed by weapons captured from the police stations.

#7  The majority of US troops in Egypt are either there to train the Egyptian army, or there to monitor the Sinai. We've had troops there since 1973, so it's not something new. I doubt the total numbers exceed 800, including support personnel.

Church bombing averted in Nigeria
(Xinhua) -- Nigerian security operatives on Sunday said a kaboom attempt by an unknown person during a Church service in northeast Bauchi State was averted.

State police commissioner Muhammad Indabawa and Adeola Ajayi, the Director of State Security Services (SSS), separately disclosed this at news conferences in Bauchi on Sunday.

Ajayi said an unknown bomber had gone to the United Methodist Church (UMC), opposite the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, during a Church service and dropped a bag which contained the improvised explosive in the Church.

The SSS boss said a member of the Church who saw the man with the bag trying to leave the Church after he dropped it, raised an alarm while church members run after him but could not arrest him.

The man, the SSS chief added, had rushed to the motorcyclist who brought him to the Church and beat feet to an unknown destination.

Efforts by the police to arrest the suspect did not yield result as he had beat feet, using the commercial cycle of violence.

The bomb, which was made with a metal casing, was jointly detonated by officers and men of the SSS and police.

Ajayi said investigation had started but appealed to the public to provide the security agents with relevant information that would ensure the security of lives and property.

Indabawa, at a news conference, said following the receipt of the information from the church leaders, SSS personnel and some bomb experts attached to Governor Isa Yuguda detonated the explosive.

He said the experts said if the bomb had went kaboom!, it would have killed many people and destroyed many properties.

The police chief urged the people to be more vigilant and report any suspected person to security operatives.

Three Moroccans arrested in 'terror probe'
Obviously more misunderstanderers of the true meaning of Islam
Three Moroccans including a Mohammedan holy man and his son were nabbed in Calabria Monday on suspicion of training recruits for international terrorism, Italian police said.

The imam of Sellia Marina, a small Ionian coast town between Catanzaro and Crotone, was nabbed at his home with his son.

The third arrestee is part of the Moroccan community of Lamezia Terme near the Tyrrhenian coast of southern Calabria, police said.

Police say the three used the Internet to get and send "multimedia documents about arms and explosives training" as well as software that "could be used to sabotage computer systems".

The homes of a further nine individuals were searched.

The sweep came at the end of a "complex" probe carried out by Digos security police and Italy's postal police, judicial sources said.

A fourth man was nabbed for drugs possession after some marijuana and a scale were found in his house.

Pakistan Suicide Attack Leaves Four Dead
[Tolo News] At least four people including three coppers were killed and 11 others were maimed in a suicide kaboom in Pakistain, local media sources said Monday.

The jacket wallah who is believed to be a teenager targeted a police van in the attack.

Officials said the van was on its routine patrol on outskirts of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar when it came under attack.

Pak Taliban has grabbed credit for the attack.

The four dead in the incident included three coppers and a civilian passerby.

The maimed were immediately taken to a nearby hospital.

Pakistain in particular northwestern Peshawar has recently been the scene of a series of deadly attacks that have claimed lives of scores of people.

Pakistain has long been criticised by international community for providing haven to the Taliban and al-Qaeda linked jihad boys.

After the Taliban regime was tossed in Afghanistan in a US-led attack in 2001, Taliban and al-Qaeda linked cut-throats beat feet to Pakistain and built sanctuaries.

White House officials believe that snuffies operating in Pakistain pose an extremely huge threat to peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Paleos shell western Negev with Grads, mortar attacks
This is worrisome. We don't need the nutters in Gazoo getting frisky right now.
The relative calm in the South was shattered on Monday night when Palestinians in Gaza fired a barrage of powerful Grad rockets and mortar shells at the western Negev.

One Grad-type rocket fired from Gaza smashed into the town of Ofakim and a second rocket slammed into Netivot, not far from a building where a wedding celebration was taking place.

Four people were treated for shock from the attack on Netivot and a vehicle was damaged.

Wedding guests reported hearing a deafening explosion, and say that the Color Red rocket alert system failed to go off. The IDF Home Front Command said it would look into why alert was not activated.

No injuries or damage were reported in the attack on Ofakim.

Meanwhile, the Eshkol Regional Council reported a mortar attack originating from Gaza. The shell landed in an open area.

Islamists, state open dialogue in Jordan
[Ma'an] Jordan's powerful Islamists said Monday they have started a dialogue with the state, saying that unlike the situation in Egypt, the opposition in the kingdom does not seek regime change.

"A group of the Islamic Action Front (IAF) met on Sunday with Prime Minister Samir Rifai and gave him our demands in writing," Zaki Bani Rsheid, member of the IAF's executive council, told AFP.

"These demands include the resignation of the government, the amendment of electoral law and the formation of a national salvation government headed by an elected prime minister."

IAF secretary general Hamzeh Mansur said the meeting was "the beginning of a dialogue" with the government.

"King Abdullah II has got and grasped the people's message. We now hope he will act quickly," he said.

An official said the 49-year-old monarch, who succeeded his late father king Hussein in February 1999, "will soon receive an IAF delegation to hear their grievances."

Mansur said: "There is no comparison between Egypt and Jordan. The people there demand a regime change, but here we ask for political reforms and an elected government," he added.

The opposition Mohammedan Brotherhood has called for constitutional amendments to curb the king's power in naming government heads, arguing that the premiership should go to the leader of the majority in parliament.

The constitution, adopted in 1952, gives the king the exclusive prerogative to appoint and dismiss prime ministers.

"We recognise and acknowledge the legitimacy of the Hashemites," Mansur said, referring to the Jordanian royal family.

Bani Rsheid agreed: "Today everybody agrees that they do not want regime change. They want reforms. But our demands today might change tomorrow if the authorities do not act quickly."

Demonstrations have been held in Jordan after weekly Friday prayers for the past three weeks to demand political and economic reforms.

Protesters have taken to the streets in Cairo and other Egyptian cities since Tuesday, calling for geriatric President Hosni Mubarak to step down after 30 years in power.

The protests in Egypt, the most populous Arab nation, were inspired by the uprising that ousted Tunisia's longtime strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on January 14.
