Afghanistan
Afghans Take Charge of Bagram Prison
[Tolo News] For the first time ever, Afghan national army has taken responsibility of a large part of the prison Bagram US airbase.

Responsibility for protection of more than 75 percent of Afghan detainees in Bagram airbase transitioned to Afghan army, Chief of the Afghan Armed Forces said.

General Sher Ahmad Karimi, Chief of the Afghan armed forces, said Afghan army is prepared to undertake responsibility of all foreign prisons where anti-government faceless myrmidons are kept.

"Today we started taking gradual responsibility of Parwan jail," General Karimi said.

Robert Harward, a top US commander, at Bagram airbase expressed happiness about the gradual hand-over and said his country will continue to support Afghanistan.

Presently, there are around 1,000 faceless myrmidons imprisoned in detention facilities in US Bagram airbase, according to some reports.

Chief Commander of military police, who has taken the responsibility, said responsibility of the entire detention facilities in Bagram base will soon be handed over to Afghan army.

90% Insurgents Havens in Quang Tri North Wiped Out
[Tolo News] More than 90 percent of Islamic exemplars' sanctuaries in northern Afghanistan have been rooted out, senior police officials in the north said on Monday.

Military officials said more operations will be launched in the region target Islamic exemplars' hideouts.

Gen. Dawood, Police Commander of 303 Pamir zone in Kunduz, said the operations are aimed at ensuring security and preparing the ground for construction of ring roads, which is expected to begin very soon.

At a conference participated by top Afghan and US military commanders, senior military officials remarked that however bully boyz are still active in some parts in the north, most of their footholds have been destroyed.

"Insurgents' sanctuaries have been destroyed 90 percent in northern Kunduz province, 95 percent in Balkh province and 98 percent in Takhar province," Gen.Dawood told a news conference.

Increasingly growing insurgency in once peaceful north had previously caused widespread concerns.

In a bid to curb Taliban influence, which was growing very fast in some provinces in particular Kunduz, military officials have focused operations in the north this year.

#3  I was going to use an insect-infestation metaphor, myself. If you only kill 90% of an infestation with an insecticide application, you're much more likely to see a resurgence after a couple breeding cycles, and with a heightened likelihood of having desensitized the population to whatever pesticide you're using.

#4  IIRC the north are not Pashtun. These are more Uzbeks. Sorta more like the Hmong in SEA, being a distinct ethnic group which in this case does not by default align itself with the Pashtun or Kabul. It's one of the reasons the AQ and the Taliban have operational problems in the area. There is no love lost between them.

Kunduz is 1/3 Pashtun and was where the Taliban retreated and the last battle was fought in 2001.

#8  George H - Even the co-application of copper with the lead pesticide does not degrade the effectiveness too badly.
Posted by: Glenmore || 01/18/2011 13:21 Comments || Top||

#9  I was thinking of the pesticide as more of a metaphor for tactics, not a literal chemical weapon application... anyways, if you're using Agent Orange in Afghanistan, you're doing it wrong. There's no triple-canopy rain forest to defoliate.

Unless you're planning on destroying the Helmand opium crop, in which case I recommend Round-Up, and a spring application. Then forting up everywhere, because the whole countryside's probably going to go full-Zulu on you for destroying their livelihood.
Posted by: Mitch H. || 01/18/2011 15:25 Comments || Top||

#10  They might go full Zulu but then they'd get hungry and they'd have a hard time buying bullets without the opium money. Besides, I'm tired of all this hearts and minds bullcrap. We invaded their country because they attacked us. Treat them like the conquered barbarians they are.

Al-Turabi arrested in Khartoum
[Al Jazeera] Security forces in Sudan have jugged opposition leader Hassan al-Turabi from his home in Khartoum, al-Turabi's Popular Congress Party front man told Al Jizz.

Monday's arrest comes a day after al-Turabi's party called for a "popular revolution" if the Sudanese government did not reverse price increases.

"He has been jugged ... with five other members of the group, and we don't know the reasons, because when they come to arrest him they don't give any reason," Bashir Adam Rahma, told Al Jizz.

"Whenever this regime has a crisis ... they will capture Dr Turabi at first. I think they are afraid of him that he might instigate some kind of uprising because ... in Sudan there are no freedoms," Rahma said.

"This is a very bad situation economically, and due to the winds of freedom coming from Tunisia, any dictator in the region is looking to see from where the danger will come.

"If they arrest people, they think they can stay in power."

Frenchman's Killer Gets Death in Yemen, Awlaqi 10 Years
[An Nahar] A court in Sanaa on Monday sentenced to death a Yemeni accused of killing a Frenchie and handed down a 10-year jail sentence in absentia to radical U.S.-born holy man Anwar al-Awlaqi.

Hisham Mohammed Assem, who was given the death penalty by a Sanaa criminal court after being convicted of killing French energy contractor Jacques Spagnolo near Sanaa in October, said in court he will appeal the verdict.

The same court sentenced Awlaqi to 10 years in prison for taking part in an gang and incitement to kill foreigners.

His relative, Othman al-Awlaqi, was sentenced to eight years on the same charges. Both are on the run and were sentenced in absentia.

"This crime (killing Spagnolo) was committed under the incitement of Anwar and Othman al-Awlaqi," the judge said as he read the verdict.

The court also accused the three men of "working within a terrorist group."

Spagnolo, who worked for energy group OMV, was bumped off at the company's compound in Sanaa on October 6, the same day a British embassy car was targeted by a rocket attack that maimed one person.

Assem was overpowered and jugged. At the time, OMV said it saw "no political background for the action taken by the Yemeni security guard" while the defense ministry said Assem had probably acted for personal reasons in what was a criminal matter.

However,
The infamous However...
it stressed that the conclusions were preliminary.

Earlier this year U.S. President Barack B.O. Obama's administration authorized the assassination of Awlaqi.

In the latest edition of Inspire, the English-language online magazine issued by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), Anwar al-Awlaqi renewed a call to strike the American government and citizens, SITE monitoring agency reported Sunday.

"Both the (U.S.) government and private citizens should be targeted," he wrote in an article. "America and Americans are the imams of kufr (leaders of disbelief) in this day and age."

Chihuahua: Mexican Federal Agents Avert Massacre
Mexican Federal agents captured two armed suspects Monday they say planned to massacre eleven young people Monday in Juarez, according to Mexican press accounts.

The presumed targets of the crime had gathered at the hotel for a party. Eight males and three females had gathered for the event including six minors.

On arrival, agents intiated a pursuit of a Pontiac Grand Am near the hotel on Avenida Jilotepec after they were dispatched to the area on reports of armed suspects in the area.

The suspects, identified as Edgar Ruiz Garcia and Angel Collazo Delgado, shot and killed Miguel Angel Garcia Vega, 21, at the hotel, then took an unidentified minor as hostage.

At the conclusion of the chase, the hostage was released unharmed. Agents seized one 9mm and .40 caliber handguns, 9mm and .40 caliber ammunition, cell phones and communications equipment.

Reports say the suspects were members of La Linea criminal group, the armed wing of the Juarez drug cartel, and the suspects admitted they were sent to the location to kill all eleven hotel room occupants.

Fourteen inmates escaped through a break in a prison wall at the Centro de Readaptacion Social (CERESO) in Achilles Serdan, Chihuahua early Monday morning, according to Mexican press accounts.

Reports say armed suspects riding aboard a Chevrolet Suburban SUV used an explosive charge to blow a hole in a wall of the prison, used small arms fire to create a diversion, then waited for escaping inmates to board.

The prison break took place at about 0500 hrs at guard tower eight on the west side of the prison. Inmates took advantage of confusion of the guards following the detonation to make their escape.

The latest reports suggest five inmate have already been captured nearby.

Achilles Serdan is five kilometers due east of Chihuahua city, and is the main CERESO for both state and federal inmates in Chihuahua state.

Europe
Greek 'bombing group' trial halted
[Al Jizz] The trial of 13 people suspected of being part of a Greek anarchist group accused of a series of bombings has been adjourned soon after it got under way at a prison in Athens.

Nine of the accused appeared in the court, held in the Korydallos prison on Monday, but proceedings were adjourned for one week following a string of demands from the defendants.

Four other defendants remain on the run and will be tried in absentia.

The proceedings were halted several times before the adjournment as the defendants objected to identity checks on people attending the court, some of whom were their friends or family members.

They also demanded that their handcuffs be removed during the court process and that the hearing be recorded.

Maria Mariellou, the presiding judge, who at times appeared overwhelmed in her efforts to maintain order, initially approved the request but later said there were no facilities available at present for audio recording, prompting an angry reaction from the defendants and their supporters.

Bombing campaign
The 13 suspects, aged between 19 and 30, are facing charges for their alleged involvement in the Conspiracy of Fire Cells.

The organisation has claimed a wave of parcel bombs sent to foreign missions in Athens in November and three European leaders abroad.

Nobody has been killed as a result of the group's activities.

Police have jugged more than 20 suspected members of gangs, mainly from the Conspiracy of Fire Cells, in the last two years, but this has not prevented them from carrying out further attacks.

Weeks before the trial the group bombed an Athens court house, damaging the building and shattering the windows of nearby buildings and wrecked at least eight cars.

Five suspected members of a group, who police said were planning attacks ahead of the trial, were jugged last week.

Mistaken identity
Those suspects also appeared before the prosecutor on Monday and four of them were jugged pending trial, while a fifth, a German woman, was released.

Helen Skopis, reporting for Al Jizz from Athens, said that the woman had been falsely identified when she was jugged.

"She was mistakenly taken for the daughter of a Red Army Faction member," she reported, referring to the armed leftist group that used to be active in Germany in the 1970s and 80s.

"She used to live in Thessaloniki until last summer when she moved to Athens. She had been in the company of some of the defendants."

Greece has a decades-old history of leftist attacks, but some groups became more active after riots in 2008 that were sparked by the police killing of a teenager.

This is the first time since the ruling socialists came to power in October 2009, vowing to crack down on the groups, that suspected members have faced trial.

The trial is expected to last months and, if found guilty, the defendants face up to 25 years in jail.

Drone boys whack five more in North Wazoo
MIRANSHAH, Pakistan — A US drone attacked a compound in northwest Pakistan's tribal area on Tuesday, killing five militants, security officials said.

"A US drone fired two missiles at a militant compound in Dashgah village killing at least five militants," a senior Pakistani security official told AFP. "We are trying to ascertain the nationality of the militants killed in the attack.

Dashgah is around 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal district, which borders Afghanistan. A security official and an intelligence official in Peshawar, the capital of the northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, confirmed the attack and the death toll.

Iraq
Suicide bomber kills 50 in Iraq
A SUICIDE bomber blew himself up among a crowd of police recruits in the Iraqi city of Tikrit yesterday, killing 50 people and wounding 150.

The blast in the insurgency stronghold was the deadliest since an October 31 siege at a Baghdad church left 53 people dead, and was the first major attack since the formation of a new government on December 21.

The bomb site in the middle of Tikrit, the home town of executed dictator Saddam Hussein, 160km north of the Iraqi capital, was covered in pieces of flesh and pools of blood, with clothing and shoes scattered across the scene. Loudspeakers from the city mosques were calling on people to donate blood for the wounded.

The recruits, applying for 2000 new jobs that Iraq's Interior Ministry recently approved for Salahuddin province, had been queuing to enter the centre since 6am, with the attacker detonating his payload at the entrance about 10.15am (6.15pm AEDT).

The attack starkly displayed the Iraqi forces' failure to plug even the most obvious holes in their security as the US military prepares to withdraw from Iraq at the end of the year.

Governor of Iraq's Anbar Province Escapes Assassination Attempt
[An Nahar] The governor of Iraq's western Anbar province on Monday survived at least a fourth liquidation attempt in just over a year, escaping unharmed a suicide kaboom that left six people maimed, police and health officials said.

Gov. Qasim al-Fahadawi, a former businessman who has friendly ties with the U.S. military in Anbar, lost an arm and underwent intensive surgery to rebuild his leg after a jacket wallah struck his Ramadi office in December 2009.

Monday's attack took place in Ramadi, the quiet provincial capital located some 70 miles (115 kilometers) west of Storied Baghdad, when the bomber rammed his car into al-Fahadawi's 12-vehicle convoy.

Al-Fahadawi was not hurt in the blast, but three of his guards and three bystanders were maimed, a police official said. A health official confirmed the casualties.

Anbar province, a Sunni Mohammedan stronghold that was once infested with al-Qaeda, was the birthplace of the government-backed militia known as Sahwa, or Sons of Iraq.

Ramadi has long been a scene of sporadic suicide kabooms by al-Qaeda against local security and civilian officials, mainly against the government's provincial headquarters. In December, suicide kabooms outside the headquarters killed 26 over two days of violence.

Gaza Home-built Rocket Hits Israel despite Truce
[An Nahar] A rocket fired by cut-throats in Gazoo landed in southern Israel early on Monday, in the first incidence of firing since armed Paleostinian groups there agreed to observe a truce last week.

The projectile, a home-built Qassam rocket, caused no injuries or damage when it landed in the Shaar HaNegev regional council which flanks Gazoo's northeastern border.

Last Wednesday, Gazoo's main bad turban factions agreed to observe a period of calm after weeks of increased rocket fire and rising tensions along the border which prompted a warning from Arab leaders that they were risking a major new Israeli invasion.

Gazoo's Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, rulers said they would ensure the "national consensus" truce was observed and deployed forces along the border zone.

Over the past month, Gazoo cut-throats have fired scores of rockets into the Jewish state, prompting a flurry of retaliatory air strikes and raising fears of another massive operation along the lines of the 2008-9 war.

Jordan puts on trial pro-Taliban terrorists
[Pak Daily Times] The Paleostinian-born mentor of slain al Qaeda leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi pleaded innocent.
No, no! Certainly not!
at the opening of his trial on terrorism charges in Jordan on Monday. Isam Muhammed Taher al Barqawi and three other Jordanian-Paleostinians, including a runaway who is being tried in absentia, are charged with recruiting Islamic fascisti in Jordan to join a "terrorist organisation" identified as the Taliban in Afghanistan. The four are also charged with attempting to harm Jordan's relations with Afghanistan. If convicted, they face 15 years in jail. The prosecution indictment said the Jordanian cell sought to help the Taliban in its "terror attacks" against US and other troops in Afghanistan. It said the four raised funds from unspecified donors in Jordan and tried to go to Afghanistan to join the "terrorist" Taliban, but that their plan failed because al Barqawi, being the prime suspect, was jugged last September.

#1  The defendants raised money from "unspecified donors in Jordan"? Um, wouldn't it be important to ID those perps too? Oh wait--lemme guess. The donors just thought they were helping blind, hungry, Afghan orphans...right.

Southeast Asia
Defense volunteer killed in southern Thailand
A defense volunteer was gunned down in Narathiwat on Tuesday morning.

Udom Chaisit was killed by four terrorists armed men at his shophouse at about 9 am. The four terrorists, pretending to be customers, stopped in front of his shophouse on two motorcycles and requested to buy fuel. As Mr Udom started to bring them bottles of fuel, they fired at him three times. He was hit all three times and pronounced dead later.

Police blamed terrorists insurgents.
Plus:
A soldier was seriously injured in a confrontation between a teacher escort patrol and Muslim terrorists militants in Yala province on Monday morning.

The attack occurred about 8 in the morning while eight soldiers on four motorcycles were returning to their base after escorting teachers to schools.

They were attacked by five terrorists militants hidden on both sides of the road who opened fire at them with AK47 and M16 rifles. The terrorists militants retreated back into the forest after the incident.

Terror Networks
AQAP's Inspire Magazine #4: Steal to Fund War on West
Followers of one of the fastest-growing radical Muslim terror groups are being told to steal, embezzle and seize property -- especially from Americans -- in order to finance their jihad.

While Muslim teaching generally forbids theft, the new edition of Inspire magazine -- launched by the group behind the air cargo printer bombs in October, the underwear bomb plot in December 2009 and the most recent pre-Christmas alert -- is now telling followers that such crimes are justifiable, especially if the U.S. government and U.S. citizens are targets.

In the fourth edition of the magazine, launched by Al Qaeda in Yemen in July, American-born radical cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki encourages his disciples to fund more attacks through crime. The Middle East Media Research Institute provided Fox News with its copy of the magazine.
Here's the front page.
"In an attempt to deal with the cash-shortage jihadist groups are facing,
Facing a cash shortage, are they? But what of the millions supposedly eagerly giving zakat to support the holy warriors?
Have they considered one of those ads like the ones used by groups to feed poor children around the world? "For just $1 a day you can ensure that Widow Fatima has all the ammunition she needs."
Al-Awlaki gives religious justification to any actions used by jihadists to obtain money. In the article, titled 'The Ruling on Dispossessing the Disbelievers' Wealth in Dar Al-Harb,' he deals with the issue by ruling that Western countries are considered Dar Al-Harb, i.e. the territory of war, countries on which the rules of war apply," says an analysis from media research group.

"Since this is the case, Al-Awlaki says Muslims living in the West are not bound by any laws or contracts that prohibit them to harm their countries of residence."

Intelligence analysts are also keying in on the magazine's emphasis on the recruitment of women as suicide bombers. One analyst who gathers intelligence from publicly available sources told Fox News that the online magazine dovetails with a new Web video where the al-Awlaki's lectures are used to voice over still pictures of women preparing for battle.

"The video glorifies the role of Muslim women in battle. Each frame of the lecture is accompanied by women. Each section has a photo of women preparing for battle, carrying arms, as part of terrorist groups," said the analyst, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "It is definitely a recruiting film for women willing to sacrifice themselves."

The video ends with a still photo of the Russian "Black Widow" who blew herself in the Moscow subway March 2010.

Analysts also note that the leading articles in the latest edition of the magazine are all written by Americans. In addition to al-Awlaki, there is Samir Khan. U.S. officials believe the North Carolina native is behind the look and layout of the magazine. There is also a piece by Adam Gadahn. The California native is a longtime mouthpiece for the Al Qaeda senior leadership in the tribal areas of Pakistan.

#1  Obtain Money By Any Means Possible, Especially from the U.S. Government and its Citizens

Methinks they might run into competition from SEIU.
