4 Insurgents Killed in N Afghanistan

Police identify main suspect in bus blast
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Police on Tuesday identified Albert Olando Mulanda, a 35-year-old Tanzanian, as the bus bomber who injured 41 people in a grenade attack on Monday night.

Mulanda, the only person to die in the incident, entered the country through Oloitoktok on October 23, using temporary pass number 0903962, Commissioner of Police Mathew Iteere said on Tuesday.

Police insist that Mulanda acted alone and not as part of a larger group as earlier thought. Witnesses had described the attack as having been carried out by three people, others by as many as seven men.

Mulanda's fingerprints have been sent to the Tanzanian National Registration Bureau for confirmation of his identity. His body is at the City Mortuary.

The explosive device has been positively identified as a Russian-made F1 hand grenade, believed to have originated from a neighbouring country and similar to another which blew up in the Embakasi District Commissioner's Land Rover in Eastleigh Section III on December 3.

Explosions
Police are linking the explosion in Nairobi's River Road targeting Kampala Coach to two other grenade explosions in the city earlier in the month and the discovery of 26 detonators on a bus in Uganda later.

Detectives are now trying to trace local and international mobile phone numbers found in a notebook recovered from the suspected bomber's pockets.

"We are in the process of checking the contents of the notebook, but it seems that the grenade was destined for Uganda," Mr Iteere said.

Investigations into the two grenade attacks in Eastleigh and Kasarani have since established that the two suspects who were shot dead by police after killing two traffic police officers at the Roysambu roundabout had entered the country three days earlier in the company of two others.

Information obtained from their seized mobile phones included an SMS message with the registration number of a vehicle.

Kenyan police forwarded the registration number to Ugandan police who intercepted the bus in Uganda and recovered 26 detonators destined for Kampala. Mulanda, booked on seat number F4, is now the only person the police are confirming as having died though on Monday night, they had released information that a woman had been declared dead on arrival at the Nairobi Hospital.

On Tuesday, police commended the Kampala Coach security personnel for thwarting the terror plot.

Mr Iteere expressed concern about the large number of Ethiopian and Somali nationals entering the country illegally and warned that owners of vehicles found sneaking aliens into the country will be paraded and charged in court.

He asked Kenyans to be more vigilant, especially during this festive season and report any suspicious persons to police.

Kenya bus explosion kills 3, injures 30
[Iran Press TV] A bomb kaboom at a bus station in central Nairobi has claimed the lives of at least three people and left more than 30 others injured, security officials say.

Kenya's police say the bomb went off on Monday while people were boarding the bus. Most of the injured are Ugandans, who were traveling home for Christmas.

"The luggage part of the bus was totally damaged. I have seen at least five maimed people, they were evacuated by paramedics," Robert Chesir, one of the witnesses, told Press TV.

Police officers immediately cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the incident.

No one has grabbed credit for the attack, but some blame al-Shaboobs in Somalia for the blast. The group had threatened to carry out attacks on Uganda and Burundi for their deployment of troops to Mogadishu.

The kaboom comes as Ugandan police allege that it has credible information regarding a planned terror attack in Kampala.

In July, Kampala suffered twin blasts that claimed the lives of over 76 people watching a World cup match. The al-Shabaab group grabbed credit for the attacks.

Another tombstone for Thugburg Cemetery (& pig farm.)
A senior Saudi al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula propagandist who founded the terror group's media arm has been killed during fighting with Yemeni security forces.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) announced the death of Nayef bin Mohammed bin Said al Kudri Qahtani, who is better known as Abu Hammam Qahtani, in a statement released on jihadist websites. Bangladesh
Janajudhha leader killed in 'shootout'
[Bangla Daily Star] A regional leader of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP)
Them again. You'd think a bunch of Maoists would at some point busy themselves with a thousand mile march or something, instead of getting on the wrong side of the Rab.
Janajudhha faction was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Varara village of Pabna Sadar upazila yesterday.

He was identified as Anisur Rahman alias Anis Master, 45, son of Gafur Amin Biswas of the village.
A two-namer son of a three-namer? The family fortunes are clearly sinking.
Captain SM Nadim Arefin Sumon, assistant director of Pabna Rab camp, said acting on a tip off from the always reliable Mahmoud the Weasel Rab raided Varara Shahi mosque area as two criminal groups were locked in a 'shootout' over supremacy in the area. Rab opened fire to disperse the criminals.
For shame! Brawling like common criminals instead of acting together for the betterment of all mankind. To what depths have the Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) Janajudhha faction fallen.
Criminals then left the place by firing. Later, Rab recovered the body of Anis from the spot.

Rab recovered a rifle, one revolver, an LG, 10 bullets and some sharp weapons from the spot.

Anis' body was sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy. He was accused in a number of cases including two for murder.
Wanted on a number of systems for being other than gentlemanly? Tsk, tsk, tsk. A good thing the Rab got involved.
According to Rab, though villagers called him Master Anis as he joined in a local madrasa, he belonged to PBCP Janajudhha and operated living in Pabna town.
From one totalitarian system to another, different excuses for similar goals.

Britain
Terror plot aimed at UK landmarks
BRITISH security officials say a large-scale terror attack was aimed at landmarks and public spaces, as more details of the plot emerged and police searched the homes of 12 British suspects being held for questioning.

The men were arrested yesterday in the largest counterterrorism raid in nearly two years. At least five were of Bangladeshi origin.

Lord Carlile, the government's independent reviewer of terror legislation, said overnight the alleged plot appeared significant and involved several UK cities. Police have up to 28 days to either charge the men or release them.

Possible targets included the Houses of Parliament and shopping areas, according to a security official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Kidnappers free Mexican politico
[Iran Press TV] Former Mexican presidential candidate Diego Fernandez de Cevallos has been sprung by his kidnappers and is safe at home, seven months after being kidnapped.

"First I have to tell you that I thank God and the Virgin for the help they gave me minute by minute during the past seven months," he said in his house in Mexico City on Monday, AP reported. "I'm strong and my life will continue the same."

The 68-year-old Mexican political power broker was kidnapped on May 14 near his ranch in Mexico's central state of Queretaro.

Five days later, his captors released photos of a blindfolded, grim-faced, bare-chested man who greatly resembled Fernandez. The move was apparently meant to put pressure on the politician's family to pay a ransom for his release.

Local news media reported in October that the family paid more than $20 million in ransom, though the family never confirmed the report.

His car was found with some of his belongings inside and blood on a pair of scissors thrown on the ground nearby.

Fernandez, a member of President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party (PAN), is known as "El Jefe Diego" or "Diego the Boss." He emerged from relative obscurity during the 1994 presidential election, which he lost to Ernesto Zedillo.

He has been one of the most influential players in his party and Mexican politics over the past two decades.

Kidnapping of executives, public officials, and ordinary citizens for ransom is rife in Mexico. The abductions often end in the deaths of victims.

N.Korea Deploys More Missiles Along West Coast
[Chosun Ilbo] North Korea has had extra surface-to-ship and surface-to-air missiles ready near the western coast since early this week in response to a South Korean artillery drill on Yeonpyeong Island, which took place on Monday.

"The North has deployed more SA-2 surface-to-air missiles and Silkworm surface-to-ship missiles at Cape Deungsan on the western coast," in addition to multiple rocket launchers and coastal artillery, a South Korean government source said Tuesday. "It seemed ready to launch some of the surface-to-ship missiles, so our naval ships moved out of range."

The surface-to-ship missiles have a range of 83-95 km, while the Soviet-made SA-2 surface-to-air missile has a range of 30-40 km, which could pose a threat to South Korean fighter jets in operations over areas near the Northern Limit Line, the de-facto maritime border.

#3  Last time, Kim & son showed up for a tour, then more guns arrived, and then they attacked. Given their amazing lack of novelty, I wonder if they are planning to wait for some SKor or US ships in disputed ocean, then to light the place up. The SKor seem to think so.

A good test would be to rig up a drone "aluminum foil" ship, that would give off a huge radar image, as well as a handful of decoy UAVs, just to see if any of those antique SA-2s are giving off somewhat more complex electronic signals than they should be.

Of course, if several Nork submarines suddenly submerged, to never reemerge, right then, that would be icing.

Europe
Bomb found on Rome Metro train
[AFP] -- A homemade parcel bomb was found hidden inside a shoe box on an empty train carriage in Rome's metro system on Tuesday, officials said. The device was composed of two short metal tubes stuffed with gunpowder that were connected by wires and had an antenna, but the detonator was missing. It was found by a metro transport worker at around 10:00 am (0900 GMT) in a service area near Rebibbia station on the northeast outskirts of the city.

Prosecutors have opened an inquiry on possible charges of possession and handling of explosive material and police officers were analysing CCTV footage to try and see how the bomb was brought onto the train.

The train started out from Laurentina station in southwest Rome, passing through the city centre and ending up at Rebibbia in northeast Rome.

Alemanno said security officers have now checked all the stations on Rome's metro system and found no other type of suspect packages.

Pinal County Sheriff Authorizes Lethal Force Against Banditos
KGUN news has been told the sheriff is about to go on the offensive with a massive show of force to stop smugglers and bandits.

"We're sending out three different teams of eight to 15 deputies in each [sic] that are heavily armed even with sniper teams out to the desert at all hours of the day and night," Sheriff Babeu said.

"We're going to wait until these cartel members come on through and we're going to announce ourselves in Spanish in this known drug smuggling corridor. That this is the sheriff drop your weapons, you're under arrest," Babeu said.

The sheriff admits the chances of having a gun fight are extremely high.

#9  Personally, I'm worried about two things:

1) The correlation of forces - any of the cartels can field a lot more trigger pullers than the county has deputies and
2) the tendency has been toward more and more outrageous actions by the cartels.

Some of these mokes may just decide to jump the shark and set up a retaliation in force.

Mentioning a third thing will probably call down the wrath of R'burg on me, but the truth is the cartelistas have been fighting gun battles for years. I doubt the deputies have the same small-unit experience even with the likely leavening of ex-military.

#13  Mercato, it sounds as if they are planning on playing defense. Setting up sniper teams along infiltration corridors rather than sweeping the desert. This allows the Sheriff's to engage or not and choose the battlefield. I like the sound of it so far.

First battle will be announcement that they are Sheriff's followed by bad guys firing their weapons followed in turn by snipers taking them down. Depending upon how/when this is reported they might be repeated a number of times before the gangs figure out what's going on and change tactics/routes.

#16  A lot of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried in those holes. But you gotta do it right. I mean, you gotta have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk. Otherwise, you're talking about a half-hour to forty-five minutes worth of digging. And who knows who's gonna come along in that time? Pretty soon, you gotta dig a few more holes. You could be there all fuckin' night.

Mumbai on alert over militant attack threat
[Bangla Daily Star] Security was stepped up in India's financial capital Mumbai yesterday, after intelligence warnings of a possible Islamic exemplar attack targeting foreigners, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was scheduled to fly to Mumbai on today on the second leg of a two-day India visit.

"Extensive security measures have been put in place and an alert has been sounded in the city in the wake of inputs of a terror threat ahead of Christmas and the New Year," PTI quoted Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal as saying.

"There are conscious efforts by terror organisations to target foreigners during these two festivals here," Dayal said.

Thai terrorists gun down three, wound two more
Suspected Islamic terrorists militants gunned down three people, a married couple included, in southern Thailand as officials boost security for New Year celebrations.

The husband, 49, and wife, 47, were shot dead at their stall selling pork at a weekly market in Pattani province on Tuesday evening. Police said the man worked for the local authority.

Also in Pattani, a 43-year-old construction worker at a Thai army base was killed in a drive-by shooting while returning from buying food early Tuesday afternoon.

On Wednesday, the local governor instructed police and soldiers to step up operations, including round-the-clock checkpoints, over heightened fears of attacks over the New Year holiday. "We are focused on risky areas such as roads, markets and security around teachers and high-profile people," he said.

Plus:

A land official was shot and injured in Pattani province on Wednesday morning.

The deputy chief of Sai Buri police, said a pick-up truck driven by Kanchit Dulayaporn was attacked by men armed with AK47 rifles on a local highway. Mr Kanchit was shot in the left leg and his vehicle, which skidded off the road, was riddled with bullets.

Police blamed Muslim terrorists insurgents.

And:

A local official was seriously wounded by a gunman in Yala province on Wednesday afternoon. Aduena Jehtae, 34, was shot in the abdomen.

Eyewitnesses told police they saw a pick-up truck arrive at Mr Aduena's house, 300 metres from a police station. A man went into the house and fired one shot from a handgun before fleeing in the waiting vehicle.

Police blamed the attack on southern terrorists militants.
