Afghanistan
15 Taliban Militants Killed in Joint Operation
[Tolo News] At least 15 Taliban Orcs and similar vermin were killed in a joint Afghan and foreign forces operation in northern Kunduz on Monday, officials said

The operation begins in Gour Tapa area in Kunduz province in response to yesterday's attack by the Taliban, Abdul Rahman Sayedkhili, the police chief of Kunduz, told TOLOnews news hound.

The forces also siezed a weapons cache of the krazed killers, he added.

Yesterday four suicide kaboomers stormed an Afghan army recruitment centre at 07:00 am local time in Kunduz, in which five Afghan police and four Afghan soldiers were killed.

The local officials said they will intensify their military operations to target the beturbanned goons in the villages of this province.

2 Taliban Commanders, 50 Militants Detained in North
[Tolo News] In a clean-up operation in Northern Balkh province two Taliban capos along with their 50 fighters were jugged, provincial security officials said on Monday

Security officials in northern Balkh province noted that the enemy sustained heavy casualties in the offensive and 55 villages including Chimtal and Chaar Bolak are cleaned up and in full control of government forces.

Officials emphasised that Taliban fighters will soon be wiped out of all parts of Northern Balkh province.

The two local Taliban capos, one of them dressed in women's outfits, were captured in Balkh district.

Balkh Police Chief, General Esmatullah Alizai told TOLOnews: "Afghan cops nabbed the two Taliban capos who were hiding in a house."

The operation which led to some successful detentions was launched under the name of "Ebtekar" which means initiative and around 1,000 Afghan forces had taken part.

This is the first such sort of operations in which some Afghan female forces had also taken part.

An Afghan policewoman who was part of the push said: "The Taliban capo was wearing a Burqa and was sitting among women."

Provincial security forces said the Operation Ebtekar will continue until the complete elimination of Islamic exemplars. They said gunnies have lost momentum in most parts and no longer have the potential to resist government forces.

But Balkh provincial government remarked Taliban's fight against Afghan forces is not motivated by Islamic notions.

"They are living a worse life because they don't know what they are doing is not a noble thing. They are not doing it for God, they are not doing it on purposes of security," said the governor for Balkh province, Atta Mohammad Noor. "They just want to make people suffer and they themselves earn a living by using guns."

Government forces have also suffered some losses in the Operation Ebtekar. Two Afghan forces bit the dust while three others were hurt during the operation.

Somali pirates, firing rockets, hijack UAE ship
[Emirates 24/7] Somali pirates hijacked a cargo vessel from the United Arab Emirates on Monday after firing small arms and rocket-propelled grenades at the ship, Europe's anti-piracy mission said.

The Orna was seized in the Indian Ocean around 400 nautical miles northeast of the Seychelles archipelago, the European Union naval force said.

"The attack was launched from two attack skiffs, with pirates firing small arms and rocket-propelled grenades at the merchant vessel," the EUNavfor mission said in a statement.

At least four pirates boarded the ship after stopping it, the statement said, adding that the crew was cooperating with the assailants and no damage was reported.

The Panama-flagged bulk carrier has a dead weight of 27,915 tonnes. The number of sailors on board was unknown, the statement said.

Egypt uncovers Israel spy ring
[Arab News] Egypt on Monday charged an Egyptian businessman and two Israelis with spying for Israel and trying to recruit operatives working for telecoms companies in Egypt, Syria and Leb.

Officials jugged Tarek Abdel Rezek Hussein, the 37-year-old owner of an import-export firm, in August, according to a document shown to news hounds by Egyptian state security attorney Hicham Badawi.

The document alleged that Hussein had accepted $37,000 for providing the Israelis with information about Egyptians working in telecommunications companies who could be recruited to spy in Egypt, Syria and Leb.

The two Israelis were charged in absentia, Badawi said.

Egypt's general prosecutor demanded that all three be sent before an emergency state security criminal court on charges of "spying for Israel and harming the country's national interests," Egypt's state news agency MENA reported.

It was not clear if the charges were linked to a wave of arrests in Leb in the past two years, some of them involving telecom sector employees, over accusations of spying for Israel.

Israel's Foreign Ministry and its embassy in Cairo both had no comment.

Egypt has maintained diplomatic and economic ties with Israel since they signed a peace accord three decades ago.

Resentment lingers among ordinary Egyptians over Israel's conflict with the Paleostinians, but arrests of people accused of spying for Israel are uncommon.

In 2007, Egypt convicted a 31-year-old Egyptian-Canadian dual national of spying for Israel. Three Israelis were charged in absentia. Israel dismissed the case as a fabrication.

In 1996, Egypt sentenced Azzam Azzam, an Israeli Arab textile worker, to 15 years in jail for spying for Israel. Egypt said Azzam had passed messages in women's underwear using invisible ink.
How could they tell, if they couldn't see anything?
Both Azzam and Israel denied the charges. He was released after serving eight years as part of a deal that included the release of six Egyptian students in Israel.

Bangladesh
2 killed in 'shootouts'
[Bangla Daily Star] Two alleged criminals were killed in "shootouts" with the Rapid Action Battalion in the capital and Tangail early yesterday.

The dead were identified as Alamgir Hossain Alam alias Takku Alam, 38, and Mamunur Rahman Mamun, 25.

In the city's Hazaribagh, Alam was rubbed out allegedly in a shootout between his cohorts and a Rab team.

He was the second-in-command of the gang led by nabbed top criminal Sanjidul Islam Emon of the capital, said police sources.

Anamul Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hazaribagh Police Station, said Alam was accused in six cases including murder charges filed with the cop shoppe.

A patrol team of Rab on suspicion challenged a group of people at Beribandh Baubazar of Hazaribagh at about 3:30am, the OC said.
Look, officers! Purbo Banglar commies!
We ain't falling for that trick, ya mugs! Fill your hands miscreants!
BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG....

Suddenly the gang opened fire on the Rab men prompting them to fire back. At one stage of the shootout, the gang members decamped the scene leaving Alam with bullet injuries on the spot, he added.

Around 4:30am the Rab team sent Alam to Mitford Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
He's dead, Jim!

A foreign-made pistol, one LG, five bullets, seven yaba tablets and some beer cans were recovered from the spot.
Yaba and beer, Mahmound. The devil's favorite.
When will they ever learn, sarge.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
in Tangail, Mamun was killed in a "shootout" at Sener Makulla village of Gopalpur upazila.

Rab sources claimed Mamun was an illegal arms trader.

A Rab team, acting on a tip-off, went to the village at about 1:00am to recover firearms, said Maj Mahfuzul Haque, commander of Crime Prevention Company-3 of Rab-12.
The Rab really are expanding -- the units now have companies. Clearly, criminal justice is an up-and-coming career choice in Bangladesh. Thank goodness there is an apparently endless stream of criminals to be crossfired and encountered. Of course, they said there was an endless supply of passenger pigeons, too...
He told The Daily Star that as the team approached a brick kiln, the criminals shot at the Rab members. Mamun came in the line of fire when the law enforcers retaliated.
Tonight's episode: Shootout at the Brick Kiln...
His associates, however, managed to flee the scene.
... as though they had never been...

The Rab team claimed to have recovered two light guns (LG), one foreign-made revolver and five bullets from the spot.
No yaba tablets, sarge?
Nah. He probably ate 'em. It makes 'em crazy...

Abul Khayer, officer-in-charge of Gopalpur Police Station, said police recovered the body and sent it to Tangail General Hospital morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.

#1  The Investigative Committee said in a statement that Pshikhachev may have been murdered for “his negative attitude towards radical Islam, and in particular, Wahhabism,” which according to the committee, the mufti had displayed publicly on several occasions. Indeed, the Kavkazsky Uzel website reported today (December 17) that Pshikhachev had frequently spoken out against religious extremism and had warned even before the October 13, 2005 insurgent raids on Nalchik that “Wahhabism can bring great harm to the republic.” According to Kavkazsky Uzel, Pshikhachev had also condemned illegal actions taken by law-enforcement personnel against Muslims.

Could have been titled "Another One Bites the Dust," meaning a moderate Muslim.

#3  "Wahabism" has been pejorative number one in Russia, for a decade. Yet that terror ideology is hardly worse than "Khomenism." A temporary alliance should be struck between the US and Russia, to the end of ridding the world of the dual menaces. As it is, the US indulges one; Russia indulges the other.

China-Japan-Koreas
Act First, Report Later, Defense Chief Tells Officers
[Chosun Ilbo] Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin on Tuesday ordered frontline commanders to respond to any North Korean provocations first and report up the chain of command afterward. The order came in response to criticism that no one in the military was willing to take responsibility for firmly repelling North Korea's artillery attack on Yeonpyeong Island for fear of escalation.

At an emergency meeting with 150 major field commanders at the ministry, Kim said, "Try to suppress North Korean acts of provocation as best as you can, but if it does launch a provocation, guarantee the right of self-defense of your subordinate commanders and deliver a powerful response until the source of the threat is removed."

Chang Kwang-il, the ministry's policy chief, told news hounds, "Under the directive, each commander exercises the right of self-defense first and reports to higher authorities later." He said the emphasis on the right to self-defense "means that our military is not bound to the rules of engagement or the Armistice Agreement regarding the extent to which we exercise that right until we strike at the source of an enemy attack."

Chang said the U.S. "concurred" on the matter.

In a video message, President Lee Myung-bak called on the military to enhance discipline, shore up combat capabilities and conduct a "complete revamp" so that it can be shorn of old habits and reborn as a strong and efficient organization. Lee also called on generals to come up with practical responses to limited attacks from North Korea and so-called asymmetric warfare.

The defense minister said the problem with South Korea's military is that it has fallen into complacency due to a long period without combat and that it has spent too much time on administrative work rather than the battlefield. He ordered troops to "boldly" slash red tape and emerge as a combat-ready force capable of defeating the enemy.

India-Pakistan
Adam Gadahn jugged in Karachi?
[Pak Daily Times] Daily Times can confirm that two al Qaeda operatives who were caught in Bloody Karachi in a joint raid by Pak and American special forces last month were Umar Misri, a top aide of al Qaeda's number two Ayman al Zawahiri and Muhammad Muhammad, the operational manager of al Qaeda.

The raids in Sohrab Goth areas last November resulted because of a call intercepted by a local FBI station in Bloody Karachi, which intercepted the communication and as per an agreement informed the Pak authorities. It should be noted that from the same, Sorab Goth area, an American al Qaeda member, Adam Gadanhn (Abu Azzam Amriki), was nabbed with another unnamed Arab individual connected to al Qaeda. Adam and an associate are reported to have been captured during a raid by Pak special forces at the Super Highway in Bloody Karachi. While the arrests had been kept secret, a top intelligence source told Daily Times that some al Qaeda members had been captured and moved to their headquarters in Islamabad, where "a joint investigation team of both Paks and Americans are interrogating them".

While in FATA, dronezaps killed two British converts, Abu Bakar and Mansoor Ahmed. The men died over a week ago in a dronezap in Dattakhel. Daily Times, after talking to intelligence officials, can confirm that both British nationals were part of the 'German cell' that was targeted in dronezaps a couple of months ago. The two British men who initially crossed over from Afghanistan, entered North Wazoo some time last year and were sent by their handlers to join al Qaeda. They were handled by the Haqqani faction, again magnifying the link between the Haqqanis and al Qaeda. In North Wazoo, the two men received explosive tactics training with the German cell and were to be sent to the US to carry out terrorist attacks.

While the British High Commission is looking into the killing of the two Britons in FATA, there seems to be a major confusion about the real identity of the two converts due to them changing their names. The Interior Ministry front man refused to comment on the story, but confirmed a request by the British High Commission to help them identify the two missing Britons via the FIA.

#1  "Local FBI station in Bloody Karachi?" Is that a way of saying Karachi is bloody, or the UK meaning of bloody as in F-ing Karachi, or is there really a place called Bloody Karachi? which would actually be really cool.

I remember teaching Indian cartographers how to interpret US maps and explaining why everything in the Western states was Bloody this, and bloody that because of the cowboys and all that.

Southeast Asia
Two Thai troops wounded in ambush
Two troops were wounded in an ambush by terrorists insurgents in Narathiwat province Monday morning. The ambush happened when four troops on two motorcycles were going back to their base after having escorted a group of teachers to schools.

Plus:

A notorious ustaz wanted for many terrorist insurgent attacks may have been behind Saturday's deadly ambush on two solders in Yala, an intelligence source said yesterday.

The intelligence source identified the Muslim religious leader as Rohing Raman, who was active in Raman district. Two of the four gunmen on the back of a pickup truck that was caught on video camera were also identified as Sofwan Samah and Usman Tengsamae.

The terrorists militants opened fire on the two soldiers while they were escorting a monk on his morning rounds for alms.

The source said Rohing's gang was trained by the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) group, while Sofwan and Usman were key RKK members. The gang has been wanted for various shootings and bomb attacks in the south.

The video showed the two soldiers leading the monk to a vehicle with the pickup truck slowly approaching them. The four gunmen in the bed sprayed bullets on the soldiers and the monk, then fled. The two soldiers were killed instantly while the monk ducked and sustained minor injuries from falling to the ground.

A local commander said all six people in the pickup truck had been identified based on their prior connection and the license plate number visible in the footage, even though five of them wore masks.

Phra Sawat Khemawino said he was considering moving away if he found it dangerous to stay on at Hua Saphan Temple as its only monk, but would decide after the New Year break. The monk said he had returned to this temple and stayed for two years to maintain the morale of local Buddhists.

Lt General Udomchai Thammasarot said Saturday's attack was in retaliation for tougher security measures and the arrests of many terrorists insurgents. Many of them were gunned down during operations when they refused to be arrested, he said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran hangs 11 Sunnis convicted of attacks
[Arab News] Iran hanged 11 men authorities said were members of an armed Sunni krazed killer group convicted of bombings, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The men were said to be members of Jundallah, the group that grabbed credit for an attack last week on Shiite worshippers that killed 39 people in the southeastern port city of Chahbahar.

Amnesia Amnesty International condemned the executions, saying they bear "the hallmark of an act of retaliation" for the attack last week, "not justice." The rights group said Iranian authorities must respect human rights
... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you...
and uphold their obligations under international law, but "in this case, they appear to have meted out summary executions in a manner that completely ignores these requirements." The IRNA report identified all 11 men hanged by their full names. All their family names indicated they were members of the Sunni ethnic Baluchi minority in Shiite-dominated Iran.

Jundallah has been waging an insurgency for years in remote Sistan-Baluchistan province, a lawless area in southeastern Iran bordering Pakistain where smuggling and banditry are rife. The groups says it is fighting for the rights of the Baluchi minority, which it says suffers discrimination at the hands of Iran's Shiite's leadership.

Iran has accused the group of links to Al-Qaeda, but experts say no evidence of such a link has been found. The United States designated Jundallah a terrorist organization earlier this year.

"Eleven members of the terrorist group and mercenaries who had a role in terrorist activities, fighting police and killing innocent people were hanged," said Ebrahim Hamidi, head of the Justice Department of Sistan-Baluchistan province. The executions took place at dawn in Zahedan, the lovely provincial capital of Sistan-Baluchistan.

Hamidi says all 11 men were convicted in a fair and open trial. He accused them of involvement in attacks over the past years that killed 15 coppers and 12 members of the Revolutionary Guards -- Iran's most powerful military force.

The were also accused of supplying arms and refuge to terrorists, armed kidnapping and arms smuggling.

Jundallah has grabbed credit for a series of deadly attacks on the military and civilians in eastern Iran over the past years.

The group said the attack last week on Shiite worshippers observing a solemn day of mourning was to avenge the hanging of its leader, Abdulmalik Rigi, earlier this year.
