#3  Nice photos, GB. Does anyone else consider the stars before 1975 prettier than the ones from "today"? There are a few exceptions, but too few...

#4  I'm not sure if it's that the older ones really were prettier in their prime, or that the not-so-pretty ones have been deservedly forgotten.

Afghanistan
Taliban kill district police chief in east Afghanistan
[Pak Daily Times] Taliban Orcs and similar vermin ambushed and killed a police brass hat in eastern Afghanistan, provincial officials said on Sunday. The incident came a day after NATO leaders wrapped up a major summit in Lisbon to endorse plans to hand control of security in Afghanistan to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.

Chief of police for Musa Khil district in restive Khost province Akbar Jan, was killed in an ambush by hard boys, provincial police chief Abdul Hakim Esaaqzai said.

NATO says international and Afghan forces killed five Orcs and similar vermin in a series of attacks over the weekend. Troops killed two Orcs and similar vermin in Zabul province.

Three civilians and a police brass hat died in Afghanistan on Sunday, as foreign forces and officials said more than 20 gunnies were killed in air strikes and fighting.

The three were killed by a roadside kaboom in southern Kandahar province that NATO commanders said showed the hard boys' "complete disregard for the lives of innocent Afghan civilians". Last month, a bombing of a mosque killed the governor of Kunduz province together with at least 12 other worshippers.

In the same month, roadside kabooms planted by Taliban Orcs and similar vermin also killed a district police chief in western Herat together with three other officers, and a district governor from eastern Nangarhar with two aides.

Africa Horn
23 killed in Somalia fighting
[Pak Daily Times] At least 23 people were killed in fighting in central Somalia and the seaside capital over the weekend, officials and witnesses said on Sunday.

Thirteen people were killed in central Somalia when a militia allied with the government attacked a village held by Orcs and similar vermin on Saturday. The fighting continued into Sunday.

Abdi Fatah Ali, a resident of Wardhumale village, where the fiercest fighting took place, said he saw 10 bodies. A man in neighbouring Elgod village, Abdulkadir, said he saw three dead people. The residents said the militia al Shabaab abandoned Wardhumale village, leaving the government-allied Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama militia in charge. Spokesmen for both sides claimed victory.

In the capital of Mogadishu, weekend festivities between Orcs and similar vermin and government forces supported by African Union peacekeepers killed 10 people and maimed 17, said Ali Musa, the head of Mogadishu ambulance services. The horn of Africa nation has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a former socialist dictator then turned on each other.

Arabia
Gulf tanker blast was Al-Qaeda attack: US
[Arab News] A Japanese oil tanker damaged in July near the Strait of Hormuz shipping lane was attacked by an Al-Qaeda-linked group that could carry out more such attacks in the area, according to the US Department of Transport.

The crew of the M. Star reported an kaboom shortly after midnight on July 28 that injured one seaman but caused no oil spill or disruption to shipping in the strategic waterway.

A bad turban group called Abdullah Azzam Brigades said that a jacket wallah belonging to it had attacked the tanker. The incident sparked theories ranging from a freak wave to a collision with a US nuclear submarine.

"Government and industry sources can confirm that the claim by the Abdullah Azzam brigades ... is valid," the US Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration said in an advisory to mariners dated Nov. 19.

"The group remains active and can conduct further attacks on vessels in areas in the Strait of Hormuz, southern Arabian Gulf, and western Gulf of Oman," the advisory said.

Ships in these waters should "exercise increased vigilance and caution" particularly during the night and should keep a special eye on activities of smaller vessels, it said.

Bordered by Iran, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, the busy strait, the gateway to the Gulf which handles 40 percent of the world's seaborne oil, is guarded by US and other warships.

Analysts cast doubt on Abdullah Azzam Brigades' claim of responsibility, saying it had a history of taking responsibility for attacks also claimed by other organizations.

#1  That was a weird one. Side of the hull caved in but unbroken. No scorch or burn marks. The deck railings torn up many feet above.

The hull damage looked like it was done by a submarine conning tower. But that would not explain the deck railings.

Something like a high speed column of water going straight up. Otherwise it almost has to be an explosion. But...

AQAP: Mail Plots Successful, Cost Low
[Yemen Post] Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula published on Sunday details of the parcel bombs that were intercepted in Dubai and London in late October before they could reach their destinations in the U.S., saying the plots were successful.

Our goal was to send a message to the West and we already did it, it made clear.

The details including the process of planting the bombs inside printer cartridges and sending them in the form of packages through Yemen were published in Al-Qaeda English language inspire magazine and on a Jihadist website that was designed to talk about the plots, called the bombs of attrition operation.

The cost of the operation was low, about $ 4200, the group said, as it grabbed credit for the explosive parcels shipped onboard UPS freight planes and destroying a UPS cargo plane in Dubai in September killing its two-member crew.

The headlines on the cover of the issue included those about the goals of the operation and its technical details as well as exclusive pictures of the packages before shipping them.

AQAP, described by the U.S. as more dangerous than the main Al-Qaeda group of Bin Laden in Afghanistan, hailed 9/11 attacks and vowed more future attacks but simple and small ones.

"Within our strategy of a thousand cuts, it is more useful that we carry out small attacks with a less number of people and less time. We can evade security barriers which cost the U.S. much."

Moreover, it sent a letter to U.S. President B.O. telling him that the cut-throats had sent the explosive parcels to a Jewish worship place in Obama city, Chicago.

"We struck two of your planes in one year and we will continue to attack your and western interests."
No, my dears, you attempted to strike two planes, but were stopped before accomplishing the intended explosions, either on the airplanes or at the Jewish worship place. Y'all failed. Why don't you go back to booming your neighbors? You're so much better at that.

#2  If al-Qaeda really wanted to hurt the USA, they'd become financiers, that way they could do trillions of dollars in damages, rake off billions in bonuses, and get off scot free. They're just pikers.

#4  TW: I'm afraid I have to disagree about their competence.

Their main objective is to make our economy bleed to death. Killing us is just a means to an end. And besides, they figure after the collapse there will be plenty of time for them to kill and/or subjugate us.

So if they've spent $ 4,000.00 and made us spend tens of millions, yes, they're coming out ahead.

Two bomb explosions kill 10 in India
[Pak Daily Times] A bomb planted under a bridge killed eight civilians on Sunday, a day after police found the crude device but left it under sandbags until it could be defused. Another bomb blamed on suspected rebels killed the Bihar's top bomb disposal expert and a soldier as they were trying to dismantle it. The bomb planted under the bridge by suspected Maoist rebels had been found on Saturday but could not be defused immediately, said Neelmani, a top police officer who uses only name.

The area was cordoned and the bomb placed under sandbags. But on Sunday, teenage boys and men pulled the bomb out from under the sandbags and "fiddled" with it, Neelmani said. All five teenagers and three men were killed, and two injured men were hospitalised.

It happened in Pachokhar village in Aurangabad district of Bihar state. Neelmani also blamed suspected rebels for a bomb that went kaboom! in the adjoining Gaya district on Saturday, killing Bihar's leading explosive disposal expert and a paramilitary soldier as they tried to defuse the bomb. Aurangabad and Gaya districts held state legislative elections on Saturday. More than 50 percent of voters turned out, defying a boycott called by the rebels.

Four Punjabis shot dead in Balochistan's border town
[Pak Daily Times] Four Punjabis returning from Iran were ambushed and killed and two others were critically injured by unidentified gunnies at a local bus terminal in the border township of Mand on Saturday.

The victims had returned to Pakistain from Iran and were to board a Bloody Karachi-bound passenger bus at the Bullo terminal, when gunnies approached them and asked them to establish their identity.

The victims claimed to be Iranians knowing the risk of identifying them as Punjabi expatriates passing through remote township of Mand in central Makran.

When asked to produce their identity papers, it was found that they were residents of Lahore and Faisalabad.

According to eye-witnesses, all the victims hooded their faces attracting the attention of every one passing through the bus terminal. Presumably, there was a mistaken identity considering them as personnel from the Frontier Corps, they claimed.

According to another report, the victims were sitting at the bus terminal and were about to leave for Bloody Karachi when person or persons unknown opened fire on them killing three of them on the spot while injuring three others.

The dear departed have been identified as Nadeem Faiz, Naeem Sada Hussain, Hassan Zulfiqar and Sikandar Qasim while injured as Khalil Bashir and Mohammad Waseem Sada Hussain.

Official sources confirmed that it was a case of assassination. Levies personnel cordoned off the whole area soon after the incident and launched a manhunt for the killers. No one claimed the responsibility for the multiple murders.

Two 'terrorists' killed in Sanandaj
[Arab News] Iranian security forces have killed two "terrorists" in festivities in the Kurdish-populated western city of Sanandaj, the Intelligence Ministry said on Sunday.

"The leader of a terrorist group made up of deviants... was killed in an ambush along with his No. 2," the ministry said in a statement carried by the Mehr news agency. It did not say when the ambush happened or name the rebel group but it said the slain men were suspected of murdering a local judicial official and of carrying out several armed robberies. "This group intended to use the money from the robberies to increase terrorist acts in Sunni-populated towns in the west of the country," the statement said.
