Afghanistan
Iranian Liason Talibunny Captured
One hopes he had a cell phone and computer and that these have been exploited by now, otherwise the release of this news is premature.
Coalition and Afghan forces captured a Taliban commander in western Afghanistan who helps "foreign fighters" enter the country from Iran.
Joint operation - who gets custody, us or the Afghans? And are they good Afghans or bad Afghans (will the prisoner be tortured or released?)
The Taliban commander, who was not named, was captured during a raid in the Bakwah district on Sunday. "Intelligence tips helped the security force track the facilitator," the International Security Assistance Force stated in a press release.

The Taliban commander was described by ISAF as a "foreign fighter facilitator and improvised explosive device expert operating in Farah province." ISAF uses the term "foreign fighters" to describe al Qaeda operatives and members of allied terror groups operating in Afghanistan.

Africa Horn
Al-Shabab tells AU forces to leave
Al-Shabaab fighters have called on the 6100-strong African Union (AU) peacekeeping force in Somalia to withdraw or to expect a new round of attacks.

"Al-Shabaab will attack the Burundian capital city of Bujumbura and the Ugandan capital of Kampala to take Dire Revenge™ for Somalis killed by the peacekeepers in Mogadishu," the Kenyan newspaper the Daily Nation quoted high-ranking al-Shabaab official Sheik Fuad Mohamed Khalaf, who is also known as Sheikh Fuad Shongole, as saying in the Somali capital on Friday.

He also warned that Burundians and Ugandans would pay a price for the presence of their countries' troops in Mogadishu, and accused them of killing women and kiddies.

"Those who killed our children and forced our mothers to wear mourning dresses, bombarding the city with fire from mortar and other guns, should know that they will have their turn to cry as happened before," Sheikh Fuad Shongole warned.

The African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia is struggling to hold back al-Shaboobs and to keep Somalia's besieged government in power.

The latest report by the International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) says thousands of civilians have been injured in recent months in festivities throughout the country in the Horn of Africa.

The Geneva-based humanitarian institution said that a total of 5,000 patients with war injuries, including 1,900 women and kiddies, were admitted to Mogadishu's Keysaney and Medina hospitals from January through September.

Compared to last year, it is an increase of 25 percent in the total number of war casualties and 72 percent in the number of war-maimed women and kiddies admitted to the hospitals.

Some 4,000 patients with war injuries, among them 1,100 women and kiddies, were taken to Mogadishu's two referral hospitals in 2009.

Boilerplate follows...
Somalia has not had a functioning government
since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

Over the past two decades, up to one million people have bit the dust in fighting between rival factions and due to famine and disease.

There are more than 1.4 million internally displaced people (IDPs) in Somalia. More than 300,000 IDPs are sheltering in Mogadishu alone.

Most of the displaced live in poor and degrading conditions in makeshift camps in southern and central Somalia, according to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society High Commissioner for Refugees.

#1  It would be nice if the US helped out now and then with some Navy aircraft hitting some of the al-Shabaab congregations with napalm and heavy explosions - preferably late at night, when there are few witnesses. I don't think al-sh$$ has the resources to counter those kinds of raids, and it would "put the fear of God" in 'em. I'm SURE we know where the main camps are by now...

US to try five suspected Somali pirates
[Iran Press TV] Five Somali pirates are set to go on trial in the United States on charges of firing assault rifles at a US navy ship off the coast of Horn of Africa state.

The suspected pirates shot at the US Navy guided missile frigate USS Nicholas on April 1, during a failed hijacking attack on the frigate they had mistaken for an unarmed merchant ship.

The federal trial for the men will begin on Tuesday and is expected to last about a month.

Due to an unwavering surge in piracy since 2007, the waters off the Indian Ocean coast of Somalia are considered the world's most dangerous maritime trade route.

The Gulf of Aden, which links the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea, is the fastest route for more than 20,000 merchant vessels traveling from Asia to Europe and the America.

However,
The infamous However...
attacks by the heavily armed Somali pirates in speedboats have prompted some of the world's largest shipping firms to switch routes from the Suez Canal and send cargo vessels around southern Africa, causing a hike in shipping costs.

The pirates usually hold the hijacked ships and their crew hostage against millions of dollars in ransoms. On Saturday, pirates onboard a South Korean tanker seized in April claimed they were freeing the ship after receiving a record 9 million dollar ransom payoff.

Somalia, located in the strategic Horn of Africa, does not have a functional government, and the Transitional Federal Government does not have much control beyond the capital city Mogadishu.

Hostage shot dead by Somali pirates
MOGADISHU - A man was shot dead on Sunday after he refused to disembark from a yacht in the Indian Ocean that was hijacked by Somali pirates last week, pirates and residents said on Sunday. The man was killed in Barawe town on the southern Somali coastline by pirates who had taken him hostage and wanted him to go onshore from his yacht in which he was sailing with others, including a woman and a boy.

‘He was shot and killed after he refused to disembark from his yacht and move onshore in Baraawe town,’ Ali Shuke, a resident in Baraawe town said. ‘The man died instantly and the gunmen took the other hostages onshore. The woman and a boy were taken to jungle areas near the town.’

The hostages’ yacht was adrift on the coast, residents said.

Andrew Mwangura, the head of a regional maritime group based in Kenya’s port city of Mombasa, said the yacht, which was hijacked last Monday near Lamu on Kenya’s coast, was anchored along Somali’s coastline near Barawe.

‘What I know is there was a yacht spotted by local people in southern Somalia, and we are trying to investigate reports of hostages and to verify their nationality,’ Mwangura, coordinator of the East African Seafarers Assistance Programme, said.

Al Shabaab controls Barawe on the southern coast of the anarchic Horn of Africa nation.

His nationality was not immediately clear. A spokesman for Al Shabaab had said the man was South African. South Africa’s department of international relations and cooperation said in a statement, however, that he was not a South African citizen. The pirates had said last week that the hostages were British. The British foreign office has said only that it had heard of the reports of the hijacking, and was investigating.

#3  This is a time for a large-fleet ARCLIGHT strike. We know the town is controlled by al-Shaboob. Sure, some hostages might be killed, but in a war, sh$$ happens. Flatten the town and everything within five miles of it. Tell the folks up north they're next if they don't IMMEDIATELY let all the ships they hold go. Just to make sure they all get the message, go in with NAVY Air and shoot up ALL the fishing boats in the ports of those towns holding shipping hostage. It is the ONLY way piracy will be stopped. 50 years ago we knew this. "Lawfare" has kept us from doing what was necessary this time. It's time some ACLU-types were also taken out and press-ganged on destroyers as common seamen. It might change an attitude or two. If not, there's always a lot of ocean to cover the mistakes.

Arabia
Radical Yemeni cleric Awlaki calls for killing of Americans
US-born radical Yemeni cleric Anwar al Awlaki has called for the killing of Americans in a new video message posted yesterday on Islamist websites.

Awlaki said Americans are from the "party of devils" and that no special religious permissions are needed to kill them, the Associated Press reported.

In the 23-minute, Arabic-language message, Awlaki said it was "either them or us."

Speaking in Arabic, Awlaki appears sitting behind a desk with a sheathed dagger in his belt.

The cleric, who was charged last Tuesday in Yemen over alleged ties to al-Qaeda and incitement to kill foreigners, is also wanted in the US on terrorism charges. Washington linked the young imam and son of a former Yemeni government minister to a shooting rampage last November at a US army base and to the botched Christmas Day 2009 attack on a US airliner.

Prosecutors told a Yemeni court specialising in terrorism cases that Awlaki corresponded with Hisham Mohammed Assem, a Yemeni accused of shooting dead French energy contractor Jacques Spagnolo near Sanaa in October, for months and encouraged him to kill foreigners.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of Usama bin Laden and headquarters of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, was coming under increasing pressure from Washington to hunt down the cleric.

"M. Awlaki is a problem," US Homeland Security and Counterrorism Adviser John Brennan said in January. "He's clearly a part of al-Qaeda in [the] Arabian Peninsula. He's not just a cleric. He is in fact trying to instigate terrorism."

Mr Brennan directly accused Awlaki of having links with Major Nidal Hasan, who is suspected of shooting dead 13 people at Fort Hood military base in Texas, and said Awlaki also likely had contact with Nigerian student Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, accused of trying to blow up the Christmas Day plane.

NOW what are you going to do? Going to strike back? Where is the money going to come from when the House of Saud is radioactive ash? Betting on the Iranians, when Qom and Tehran, Abadan, and Bushehr are all radioactive craters? Where are the boomers coming from, when 90% of the rank-and-file Islamists are either dead or struggling to eke out a bare existence from radioactive soil?

#9  Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

WASHINGTON – Attorneys for the father of a cleric trying to inspire Muslims to kill Americans argued in court Monday to keep his son from being targeted for death by President Barack Obama. U.S. District Judge John Bates heard arguments in the case of Anwar al-Awlaki on the same day that the American cleric made a renewed call for jihad against U.S. citizens in a video posted on extremist websites.

Al-Awlaki, believed to be hiding in Yemen, was linked to last year's shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, and the attempted bombing of a U.S.-bound flight last Christmas. In the latest video, he said all Americans are the enemy and Muslims should kill any of them at will without consulting anyone.

Al-Awlaki's father, Nasser al-Awlaki of Yemen, has sued Obama to stop the targeted killing of his son, who was born in New Mexico, and to force the government to disclose standards for determining whether U.S. citizens can be targeted for death. He argues that the president's authority to unilaterally declare a targeted killing violates his son's constitutional right to due process.

"What the government is doing is imposing the death penalty without trial," said Jameel Jaffer, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union, which along with the Center for Constitutional Rights has taken al-Awlaki's case.

Pops and Jameel oughta be air dropped into Yemen to consult with sonny. Preferably without parachutes...

Court overturns Gitmo prisoner release
[Iran Press TV] A US appeals court has revoked a judge's order allowing the release of a Guantanamo prisoner after spending eight years in the facility without trial.

In March, a lower court judge had ruled Mohamedou Ould Salahi of Mauritania should be freed for lack of evidence that he was involved with the al-Qaeda terror organization, the News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported.

However,
The infamous However...
a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia said on Friday that the lower court must reconsider the case.

"That court, lacking the benefit of these recent cases, left unresolved key factual questions necessary for us to determine as a matter of law whether Salahi was part of al-Qaeda when captured," wrote Judge David Tatel in an opinion supported by judges David Sentelle and Janice Rogers Brown.
Shouldn't be necessary for the court to determine whether he was part of al-Qaeda. That isn't the role of the court; it's the role of the military and intel agencies that are part of the executive branch, authorized by the legislative branch, which are the only two parts of our country authorized by our Constitution handle these matters.
The United States has accused Salahi of swearing allegiance to al-Qaeda in early 1991 and periodically helping its members over the following decade.

The detainee supposedly was also subjected to harsh interrogation techniques while held by US authorities in the notorious US prison in Cuba.

Following Friday's report, Salahi's lead attorney Theresa Duncan said she was disappointed with the appeals court decision.

The Mauritanian inmate is one of 174 detainees still held at the Guantanamo Bay prison, which US President Barack B.O. Obama had promised to close.

Taliban execute three 'US spies' in North Waziristan
[Pak Daily Times] Taliban publicly executed three rustics in North Wazoo on Sunday after accusing them of spying for the United States, officials said. The men, blindfolded with hands tied behind their backs, were lined up near a gas station in the tribal area, local police official Nasir Khan said. "A man wearing a black mask then shot them dead one by one," he said - adding that the turbans, before killing the trio, asked local people to "come and witness the fate of US spies". He said that about 100 people watched the executions at an open area on a road near Miranshah, the main town in North Wazoo and a bastion of Taliban and al Qaeda linked terrorists.

4 drone-zapped in NW Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed in another U.S.drone attack launched Sunday night in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of North Waziristan, reported local media. According to the report, the U.S. drone fired two missiles at a vehicle in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan, which is suspected carrying militants inside.

The latest strike is second of its kind on Sunday. Not long before, the U.S. drone launched a strike at a house in the Miranshah area of North Waziristan, which is located northeast of Datta Khel. In the first strike, the U.S. drone also fired two missiles at a house suspected to be a hideout of militants, killing at least 12 people.

Shortly following the first strike on Sunday, there came in news saying that Taliban had killed three people suspected to provide guidance for U.S. drone attacks in the area. The three dead bodies were found at a bazaar near the first hit area with a letter placed on them from Taliban saying they are spies providing information for U.S. drone attacks, said the report.
If we had a CIA worth the name, those three would have been falsely-fingered Taliban loyalists.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Clashes erupt as Israel police raze mosque
[Emirates 24/7] Clashes broke out in the southern Bedouin city of Rahat early on Sunday as Israeli police demolished an "illegally-built" mosque in a pre-dawn raid, police and witnesses said.

Local residents said thousands of police and border police drove into the southern desert city overnight and set up roadblocks to prevent people from reaching the mosque.

Clashes broke out as those living near the mosque poured out of their houses to prevent the demolition, and police fired tear-gas and rubber bullets, a front man for the local branch of the Islamic Movement told AFP.

"They went into the mosque and jugged those who were praying inside, including me, and drove us outside the city until the operation was over," said Yusuf Abu Jamer.

Police confirmed the demolition, saying a local court had ordered the structure be raised as it was built without a permit.

"A large number of police demolished an illegally-built structure this morning which was being used as a mosque in Rahat," police front man Micky Rosenfeld told AFP, saying demonstrators had thrown stones to try to stop the operation, leading to two arrests.

After the raid, Rahat city council declared a general strike, with a protest planned for later on Sunday, residents said.

Abu Jamer said the mosque, one of the biggest in Rahat that had been built to try to combat drug dealing in the area, was one of 17 local mosques built without a permit.
