Afghanistan
Eighty Taliban killed in failed attack on NATO base
EIGHTY Taliban insurgents have been killed in a failed attack on a NATO combat outpost near the border with Pakistan.

"Fresh information that we received from intelligence sources shows that 80 Taliban have been killed. The bodies of the militants were left on the battlefield," said Mukhlis Afghan, spokesman for the governor of eastern Paktika province.

NATO said earlier that 30 Taliban had been killed as international troops repelled an attack on the outpost in Barmal district, which sits on the border of Pakistan's lawless North Waziristan tribal area.

A statement from NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said the insurgents launched the attack early on Saturday "from all directions" using rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and small arms fire.

Five ISAF soldiers were injured, it said, adding that they kept fighting.

"The coalition forces called for air weapons team and close-air support during the engagement. A coalition aircraft engaged an insurgent firing position with three precision-guided munitions," it said.

"The air weapons team also engaged a large number of insurgents near the outpost," it said, adding: "Initial operational reporting indicates more than 30 insurgents were killed in the failed attack on the outpost."

The proximity of the combat post to the border hints at the possibility the insurgents had crossed from Pakistan, where the Taliban's leadership council is believed to be based.

The insurgency in Afghanistan is now in its 10th year since the Taliban's regime was overthrown in the US-led invasion in late 2001.

Remote border regions have proved particularly volatile in recent years.

Afghan militia trained in Australia
[Al Jizz] Six Afghan fighters loyal to a warlord from Uruzgan Province flew to Australia to train with special operations forces there last week, the Australian military chief has confirmed.

Air Marshall Angus Houston told news hounds on Friday that the six hard boyz had participated in combat training exercises in south Australia and at a military base on the outskirts of Sydney.

Houston's remarks came after an earlier report by the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper claimed that senior fighters loyal to warlord Matiullah Khan had trained in Australia despite Khan's controversial reputation as an independent military commander who charges international forces fees to protect their convoys.

"The Afghans invited to Australia will fight side by side with our special operations soldiers, which is an important part of our efforts to stabilise Uruzgan," an Australian defence department front man said.

Australia, a non-Nato member nation which has lost 21 troops in Afghanistan, maintains a strong presence in Uruzgan, a sparsely populated province that borders bustling Kandahar to the south and was until recently the heart of the Netherlands' mission in the country.

Though Afghan police and military troops receive training from a horde of international soldiers and private contractors in Afghanistan on a daily basis, such training is not openly provided to non-government militias.

In June, the New York Times newspaper described Khan as the most powerful man in Uruzgan - above even the provincial governor, police chief or local army commander.

Khan, the Times said, is the "head of a private army that earns millions of dollars guarding Nato supply convoys and fights Taliban cut-throats alongside American special forces".

Working with 'warlordy' types
The Herald reported that the fighters' visit to Australia came amid a parliamentary debate about the country's role in the Afghan war.

On a visit to Afghanistan earlier this month, Julia Gillard, Australia's prime minister, was praised by Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai, the Afghan president, for working closely with "warlordy types", according to a summary of the encounter obtained by the Herald.

Khan and other powerbrokers like him have carved out profitable roles for themselves in tribal, war-torn Afghanistan, often by running licensed private guard companies or security operations such as Khan's.

Khan has drawn much attention to himself; he received a high-profile mention in a report released in June by a US congressional committee that concluded America was paying out billions of dollars to "warlords, strongmen, commanders, and militia leaders" to guard the military's enormous supply chain.

Khan's militia, which has been estimated between 900 and 2,000 men and is sometimes called the "Kandak Amniante Uruzgan", runs operations with US special forces troops and operates without oversight from Afghanistan's central government.

Khan has no official government position, though he refers to himself as the chief of provincial highway police - an organisation that was disbanded years ago.

"No one can travel without Matiullah without facing consequences," the chief of a private security company told US congressional investigators this year. "There is no other way to get there. You have to either pay him or fight him."

Dutch tried to sideline Khan
The Dutch, who left behind a mixed legacy in Uruzgan, reportedly refused to work with Khan or officially recognise his status as a local power broker, even after removing Jan Mohammed Khan, the former provincial governor, because of his reported involvement in crime and the drug trade.

The Liaison Office reported in September 2009 that Dutch efforts to "Afghanise" security had resulted in 300 to 400 of Matiullah Khan's fighters joining the local Afghan National Police, but those officers reportedly continue effectively to work for Khan and draw a salary from him.

Khan reportedly charges between $300 and $2,000 for each vehicle his troops protect.

NATO helicopter kills 20 Afghan insurgents
[Arab News] A NATO helicopter killed more than 20 beturbanned goons after it was fired on during an operation in Afghanistan's restive but lovely Kandahar province, the coalition said Friday.

The group of fighters shot at the helicopter with small arms and machine guns, a NATO statement said. A ground team later found 20 bombs, firearms and several vehicles.

The fighting occurred Thursday during an operation to flush out beturbanned goons in the Spin Boldak district, said provincial border police chief Abdul Raziq. He said 300 police were deployed alongside NATO troops and that three Afghan coppers died when their car hit a mine.

NATO said initial reports showed there were no civilian casualties during Thursday's fighting. The coalition tightened its rules of engagement last year after complaints its air raids frequently killed civilians instead of jihad boys. Since then, reports of civilian deaths caused by NATO have dropped by a third.

NATO and Afghan forces began pushing into the insurgency's heartland in southern Afghanistan in July but attacks in other areas of the country have shot up.

In western Herat province, beturbanned goons surrounded a checkpoint manned by local police in Chishti Sharif district on Friday afternoon and opened fire, killing 10 officers and wounding 12, said district police commander Gulbuddin. He goes by a single name.

Both the west and the north, traditionally considered more secure, have seen an upsurge in attacks, kidnappings and liquidations since the offensive against the Taliban began in the south.

Car of Intelligence Officer on AQAP's Target List Bombed in South
[Yemen Post] Unidentified people bombed on Thursday the car of an intelligence officer in Yemen's southern Abyan province whose name was in a target list of 54 southern public security and intelligence officers and local officials published by Al-Qaeda in August.

The attackers planted two bombs under the car, parked outside of the home of officer Ahmed Shunai'a, early today, at 4:00 am, but none was inside or near it at that time.
This is not why Americans have garages, but they do come in handy when one's name is on a target list.
In August, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula AQAP, which has recently drawn the world's attention to terrorism in Yemen, published the list and said it would target the officers and officials in retaliation for intensified operations against its members in the country.

In recent months, it has stepped up its attacks on public security and intelligence buildings, security patrols, military vehicles and convoys and homes and cars of officers and officials killing dozens.

It also vowed to continue fighting the authorities and their crusader and western allies and attacks against their interests in Yemen.

In response, the government has been carrying out large-scale operations against terrorists, mainly in southern and southeastern areas, killing, wounding and arresting many of them.

Yemen forces, Houthis shoot it out
[Arab News] Clashes between rebels and a pro-government tribe in the mountains of northern Yemen late Thursday evening killed a primitive and two rebels, the tribe's leader said.

"Armed rebels attacked our men Thursday evening in Nuchur, near Saada town, killing one of them and wounding two," said Fayez Al-Awjari, who is also a member of Parliament for the area.

"We organized an expedition and, in festivities lasting several hours, two rebels were killed and five maimed," Awjari said Friday.
Halloween is on Sunday. The lads are just practicing a bit ahead of time.
He said the fighting came just 24 hours after Qatari envoys had visited Saada, a rebel stronghold on the Saudi border, in their latest bid to negotiate the peaceful return of government employees to offices in the province under a February peace deal with the rebels.

"Tensions are running very high and festivities could resume at any moment," Awjari said, adding that he was keeping his rustics on a war footing.

Outbreaks of fighting have repeatedly rattled the fragile truce which the government and the rebels agreed in February.

In July, there were nine days of deadly festivities between the rebels and the army. The following month, deadly fighting between rebels and pro-government tribes was only brought under control after a new Qatari-brokered agreement on implementing the February deal.

There have been six rounds of fighting between the rebels and government troops since the uprising first erupted in 2004. The conflict has killed thousands of people and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

The last round began with a government offensive in August 2009 and saw border festivities between the rebels and Saudi troops. It ended with February's six-point peace plan.

The rebels complain that while they have freed government troops they captured during the fighting, hundreds of their own supporters remain in jug.

They are also demanding that the government honor pledges to spend more on developing the northern provinces.

Kidnapped Swede freed in Yemen
[Arab News] Security officials say a Swedish national and his driver who were kidnapped by rustics in southern Yemen have been released.

The officials in Abyan province say the two were released Friday after tribal mediation.

The Swedish man, an engineer at a cement factory in south Yemen, was kidnapped late Thursday by armed rustics who wanted to use a hostage to negotiate the release of a fellow tribe member who was sentenced to death in a Yemeni court.
A Yemeni custom of centuries' duration. Respect the local culture, please.
A Yemen security official said the man was released after security forces agreed to review the Yemeni prisoner's sentencing.

Abyan's deputy governor, Saleh Al-Shamsi, said the kidnappers were demanding the release of a fellow primitive jugged in Sanaa.

The Swede was in good health after his ordeal, the official added.

"The Swede was freed after the kidnappers received assurances from the local government that President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh would personally review the case of one of their clansmen," said the official.

A security official said earlier that the kidnappers were believed to be members of the Maraqish tribe, which has been campaigning for the release of a clansman on death row in Sanaa.

Suspicious Package to U.S. not from Yemen; Yemenia Air Cargo Director
[Yemen Post] Mohammed al-Shaibah, Air Cargo Director for Yemenia Airways said to Yemen Post, "No UPS cargo plane left Yemeni lands over the land 48 hours. These accusations are false and baseless." He added, "No UPS or DHL cargo packages heading to Chicago through Yemen took place in the last 48 hours as well."

"All packages are checked very carefully in Yemen, and there is no evidence to prove that this package came through Yemen."
Then his lips fell off.
CNN reported the suspicious package, which contained a "manipulated" toner cartridge, tested negative for kaboom, the source said, but it led to heightened inspection of arriving cargo flights in Newark, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a UPS truck in New York.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Terrorist act prevented in Makhachkala
(Itar-Tass) -- A terrorist act has been prevented in Makhachkala, Dagestan, the National Counter Terrorism Committee told Itar-Tass.

"Gorvodokanal water mains workers found a suspicious plastic bag on Soldatskaya Street at 1:10 p.m. Moscow time on Friday. The police blocked the area, and tenants of nearby houses were evacuated," the committee said.

Demolition experts of the Federal Security Service
... the successor to the KGB...
confirmed that the plastic bag contained a radio-controlled bomb made from a five-liter plastic keg, explosives and shrapnel.

"The bomb was unarmed with a water gun at 4:40 p.m. Moscow time. Its size was preliminary estimated at four kilograms of TNT," the committee said.

None of the coppers and civilians was hurt in the demining operation.

"The committee is grateful to residents of Makhachkala for cooperation with the police. The prevention of criminal attacks of bully boyz in the North Caucasus becomes a common cause of everyone interested in regional sociopolitical stability, sustainable and conflict-free development of North Caucasian republics," the committee said.

China-Japan-Koreas
Two Koreas exchange fire at border
(KUNA) -- South and North Korean troops exchanged fire Friday near the border, with the North launching the first shots toward a South Korean military guard post, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing an official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul.

"Two shots were fired from a North Korean military guard post toward our guard post around 5:26 p.m. (0826 GMT), and we immediately returned fire with three shots as under the rules of engagement," the official was quoted as saying. There was no damage from the North Korean shots, the report said. The South Korean guard post is in Hwacheon, 118 kilometers northeast of Seoul, the report said, adding that the posts are 1.3 kilometers away from each other. The official said after returning fire, South Korea twice issued warnings that the North had breached the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

"It hasn't been confirmed whether the North Korean military took an aimed shot," the official said. The United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society Command will send a special investigation team to determine whether North Korea had violated terms of the armistice, he said. South Korean military officials are looking at possible links between the shooting and a threat by the North earlier Friday of physical retaliation over Seoul's refusal to hold inter-Korean military talks. The two Koreas held their first working-level military talks in two years on Sept. 30 for discussions on cross-border issues, but the two-hour meeting ended without progress as Pyongyang refused to apologize for its alleged sinking of the South Korean warship. A Seoul-led multinational investigation team concluded in May that the warship was downed by a torpedo fired by a North Korean submarine near the Yellow Sea border. The North denies any involvement in the sinking that killed 46 South Korean sailors.

Europe
Al-Qaeda plotted to take hostages
(KUNA) -- Al-Qaeda planned to take hostages in Mumbai-style attacks on Britain, France and Germany to demand the release of the criminal mastermind of the September 11 atrocities, according to a former associate of Osama bin Laden Friday.

Noman Benotman said that bin Laden wanted to force the Americans to release Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is awaiting trial for his part in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported. Benotman, a Libyan and former Afghanistan terrorist camp trainer, said that he was present at several discussions about the plot and believed it has now been reactivated.

Osama bin Laden 'living comfortably in Pakistain' he said: "I have information that I consider to be reliable, according to which al-Qaeda in North Wazoo is training how to carry out multipleparallel hostage takings in order to enforce the release of a prisoner." Bentomans claims are backed by separate developments in al-Qaedas command structure, which suggest it is preparing for a major operation, the paper added.

Muhammad Ibrahim Makkawi, who is counted among al-Qaedas most sophisticated planners, has rejoined the terrorist group after he was freed in return for Iranian diplomats kidnapped by the organisation. Adnan al-Shukrijuma, an al-Qaeda operative, has been given a senior operational role, made responsible for training teams for attacks on Western targets.

Counter-terrorism experts say Benotmans claims deserve attention. Berlin-based Guido Steinberg, of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, said: "In the past all of his information proved to be right.

" Now based in London, Benotman is a consultant with the Quilliam Foundation, which monitors the activities of violent Islamist groups. He was a ranking member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), an al-Qaeda affiliate founded in 1995 by Libyan jihadists who had fought against Soviet forces in Afghanistan. In 2001 though, Benotman broke with al-Qaeda after bin Laden rejected the LIFGs calls for an end to strikes outside Afghanistan.

Intelligence suggesting that an al-Qaeda commander boasted that he had sent hard boyz to Britain and Germany as part of a Mumbai-style plot caused an alert across Europe last month, although no evidence of attack planning has been uncovered. Ahmed Siddiqi, a German national, was jugged in Afghanistan in July and told US interrogators about the plot, the Telegraph went on. The key members of the team are thought to include Shahab Dashti, a German of Iranian descend who featured in a 2009 jihadist video calling on Western Mohammedans to support al-Qaeda.

Rami Makanesi, a German of Syrian origin, is also believed by US and European intelligence services to be a member of the group. European intelligence officials believe Siddiqi and other members of the team were recruited by Naamen Meziche, a French national of Algerian origin, from a Hamburg mosque. Mamoun Darkazanli, a German who led prayers at the mosque, was identified by the 9/11 Commission as having links to al-Qaeda. In 2003, Spain sought his extradition from Germany on charges of membership of al-Qaeda, the paper concluded.

FBI links 3 shootings in US
[Straits Times] AUTHORITIES have linked a shooting this week at a vacant Marine Corps recruiting station in Virginia to two other recent and similar attacks on military buildings, US media reported on Thursday.

Citing FBI officials, The Washington Post said ballistics tests have linked bullets found at the recruiting office in Chantilly, Virginia on Tuesday with others recovered last week at the Pentagon and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

All three shootings just outside the capital Washington took place overnight or in the early morning hours. The museum shooting was discovered on Oct 17, and shots were fired at the Pentagon two days later. No suspect has been found and no one was injured in the attacks.

Although authorities have declined to discuss the type of weapon used or the calibre of the ammunition, police suspect the shooter used a high-velocity rifle.

The case comes amid growing concerns over terror threats in Europe and the United States and only months after an American gunman walked up to the Pentagon's main entrance and opened fire, wounding two police officers before he was shot dead.

Police introduced tighter security after the March assault, though the Pentagon has been heavily guarded since the attacks of Sept 11, 2001, when a hijacked plane slammed into the building.

Iraq
At least 21 dead in Iraq suicide attack
[Al Jazeera] At least 21 people have been killed and 37 others maimed in a suicide kaboom near the Iraqi capital, police say.

The attack that occurred on Friday at a cafe usually filled with Shia Mohammedan Kurds in Balad Ruz, a town in Diyala province northeast of Storied Baghdad.

"The boomer blew himself up inside the cafe. Most of the victims are civilians, 95 per cent are civilians," Muthana al-Timimi, the head of the security committee of the Diyala provincial council, said.

Sadeq Abbas, a Kurdish resident from Balad Ruz, told the Rooters news agency: "I was near the cafe and suddenly a big kaboom happened inside and there was chaos in the area.

"Security forces started shooting in the air to disperse the crowd and prevent people from going near the cafe."

Colonel Kadhim Bashir Saleh, a front man for Iraq's civil defence force, said the cafe, a popular venue for playing dominoes and drinking tea, was destroyed.

Al Jizz's Rawya Rageh, reporting from Baghdad, said authorities had imposed a curfew in Balad Ruz and jugged five people after the kaboom.

The blast was the first major suicide bomb attack to occur in Iraq for several weeks, as political factions continue to tussle over positions and power almost eight months after an inconclusive election.

Kurds, who have played a kingmaker role in Iraqi politics since the US-led invasion in 2003 ousted Saddam Hussein, are being courted by both coalitions but appear more likely to side with Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister and his Shia-led alliance.

Kurds have also been frequently targeted by groups like al-Qaeda in Iraq, seeking to foment ethnic and sectarian violence.

The last major attack by boomers in Iraq took place last month when fighters swarmed an army base in Baghdad, battling Iraqi and US forces for at least an hour.

At least 12 people died in the assault on a heavily guarded military headquarters.
