Somalia Islamist split fears
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Just as the Islamist al-Shabaab militia in Somalia seemed on the verge of driving the Western-backed Transitional Federal Government out of the capital Mogadishu, the bad boys' offensive looks like being crippled by a split between rival factions.

The schism has clearly undermined the offensive, although it had been faltering in recent days because of mounting bad boy corpse counts.

At the same time, fighting in central Somalia between al-Shabaab and more moderate Ahlu Sunna wa'l Jamma militia also stalemated.

The failure of al-Shabaab's Ramadan offensive, intended to rout Somalia's TFG from Mogadishu, appears to have led to a major rift between the group's emir, Sheik Ahmad Abdi Godane, 'Abu Zubair,' and his deputy, Sheik Mukhtar Robow, 'Abu Mansour'," according to the Jamestown Foundation, a Washington think tank that monitors global security.

Clashes kill 17 in southern Somalia
Heavy festivities between Somali pro-government forces and al-Shaboobs have left at least seventeen people titzup and dozens maimed in southern Somalia.

The fighting erupted on Tuesday in parts of Rabdhure, Bakol regions in south Somalia, witnesses said.

According to the residents, the 17 people bit the dust when al-Shaboobs attacked the town and clashed with Somali government troops. They added that the Shaboobs are currently in control of the town, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
at least six holy men were rubbed out by unknown gunnies in the central Somali region of Galguduud.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) warned last week that hundreds of civilians have been injured in fighting in Somalia over recent months.
I am overcome by waves of apathy...
The Geneva-based humanitarian institution said that a total of 5,000 patients with war injuries, including 1,900 women and kiddies, were admitted to Mogadishu's Keysaney and Medina hospitals from January through September.

Compared to last year, it is an increase of 25 percent in the total number of war casualties and 72 percent in the number of war-maimed women and kiddies admitted to the hospitals.

Some 4,000 patients with war injuries, among them 1,100 women and kiddies, were taken to Mogadishu's two referral hospitals in 2009.

It also could have been Algeria, Sudan, Mali, Mauritania, Iran, or a half-dozen other places. There are just too much of this sh$$ going on in too many places, and it all involves "Islamic" "holy" men.

Bangladesh
Rab caught mugger after gunfight
An alleged mugger was caught in injured condition after a shootout between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in BSCIC industrial area of Fatulla Police Station early yesterday.

The mugger was identified as Opu Singha, 35, ringleader of a snatching gang.

Acting on secret information, a team of Rab-11 raided the area where a gang of armed snatchers gathered to commit crime.

Spider senses tingling at the proximity of the elite force, the criminals opened fire on them
"Open indiscriminate and poorly-aimed fire, mens!"
"Hokay, boss!"
[BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!]

forcing them to fire back
"You may fire when ready, Sergeant Rafiq!"
that triggered a shootout, Rab sources said.

At one stage, Opu was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries in his leg
"Aaaaiiieee! My leg!"
"A little higher next time, Sergeant Rafiq!"
"Sorry, sir! Won't happen again!"

while his cohorts ran away.

Later, Rab personnel sent him to a local hospital.
"Another one for Doctor Quincy, sergeant?"
"Doctor Kildare, I think. And I need the prescription checked on these glasses!"

One LG, one round bullet, a dagger and two moneybags were recovered from the spot.

Coahuila: Four State Police Wounded in Friendly Fire Incident
Google Translate. For a map, click here.
Four unidentified state police agents were shot and wounded in a confrontation in Torreon, Coahuila, that turned out to be a case of friendly fire, say Mexican news accounts.

At around 1100 hrs Tuesday morning near the corner of calle Nicaragua and calzada Emiliano Carranza, two Coahuila state police agents were effecting the arrest of an unidentified carjacking suspect, when armed suspects aboard a GMC pickup truck fired on the agents, who then returned fire.

The ensuing firefight hit several homes and a church in the area and sparked a mobilization of security forces in the area.

Two police agents were hit by gunfire, but so were two armed suspects aboard the pickup truck.

Field interviews of the wounded revealed that the two armed suspects were undercover police agents tasked to escort Joseph Ganem, a Torreon city councilor. The undercover agents fired on the state police agents because of the presence of firearms just a few meters from the business of their escort.

All four are expected to survive their wounds.

Dagestan police defuse powerful bomb
(Itar-Tass) - Law-enforcement bodies in Dagestan prevented a large terrorist attack on Wednesday. The information office of the National Anti-Terrorist Committee (NAK) told Itar-Tass that police found a radio-controlled bomb in Gogol Street, Makhachkala, with a yield of up to six kilograms of TNT.

"At 12:20, Moscow time, the police, acting on a tip from vigilant citizens, detected a homemade bomb in a plastic bag," the NAK information office said.

"The situation in the area was taken under control on time, as police blocked traffic along Gogol Street until 16:35, Moscow time, although it created traffic jams in central Makhachkala. Part of the tenants of nearby houses had to leave their homes for several hours awaiting the end of the measures to prevent the terrorist attack

"Demolition experts from the Federal Security Service
... the successor to the KGB...
(FSB) and Dagestan's Interior Ministry defused the bomb. According to preliminary estimates, its yield was 6 kilograms of TNT. The bomb was filled with delicacies of the season, such as bolts, nuts and brick fragments massing up to two kilograms.

"The NAK's operations headquarters in Dagestan thereby prevented a high-profile terrorist attack in Makhachkala.

"The operations headquarters is grateful to Makhachkala residents for their vigilance and assistance to law-enforcement bodies in counteracting terrorism," NAK underlined.

On October 25, a bomb was found near Makhachkala's Dzhuma mosque. It was planted at the intersection of Imam Shamil and Abubakarov Streets. Specialists with sniffer dogs who arrived at the scene confirmed the presence of explosives. FSB engineers used a robot to render it harmless.

Man charged in bomb plot on US capital's subway
[Dawn] A Pak-born man was jugged Wednesday and charged with trying to help people he believed were al-Qaeda operatives in planning to bomb subway stations around the US capital, the FBI said.

The FBI said the public was never in danger because its agents were aware of the man's activities before the alleged planning took place and monitored him throughout.

Farooque Ahmed, 34, a pretend U.S. citizen, had been indicted under seal Tuesday and the indictment was released Wednesday. He was charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization, collecting information to assist in planning a terrorist attack on a transit facility, and attempting to provide material support to carry out multiple bombings to cause mass casualties at Washington-area metro stations.

Ahmed lives a suburb outside Washington.

Federal investigators said starting in April Ahmed met several times with people he believed were al-Qaeda bad guyz.

During one of those meetings, investigators said, he agreed to watch and photograph a hotel in Washington and a metro station in suburban Arlington, Virginia. He also was accused of participating in surveillance, recording video of a subway station in Arlington on four different occasions, and agreeing to get security information about two stations.

Investigators said in a Sept. 28 meeting he gave diagrams of Arlington metro stations to a person he thought was part of al-Qaeda and gave suggestions about where to put explosives on trains to kill the most people in simultaneous attacks planned for 2011.

"Today's case underscores the need for continued vigilance against terrorist threats and demonstrates how the government can neutralize such threats before they come to fruition," Assistant Attorney General for National Security David Kris said in a statement after Ahmed's arrest.

"Farooque Ahmed is accused of plotting with individuals he believed were cut-throats to bomb our transit system, but a coordinated law enforcement and intelligence effort was able to thwart his plans."

Israeli forces intrude in Gaza's Al-Maghazi camp
(KUNA) -- Israeli occupying forces intruded late Tuesday in the eastern part of Al-Maghazi camp in central Gaza.

Eyewitnesses said that the forces were backed by Israeli tanks and bulldozers. The forces opened fire as they intruded in the camp, but no Palestinians were shot in the feet hurt, they added.

Witnesses told KUNA that the bulldozers destroyed Palestinian land.

Meanwhile, Israeli gunboats opened fire Tuesday evening and early Wednesday at Palestinian fishing boats and ships which were near the cities of Rafah and Khan Younis, south Gaza Strip. Local radio stations said hundreds of Palestinian fishermen were forced to head back to shore to avoid being hurt in the Israeli fire that targeted them.

Israeli military planes also flew over Gaza Strip Tuesday evening as it did in the previous days.

The people of Gaza fear that a new Israeli offensive would target them.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
US slaps sanctions on 37 Iranian firms
[Iran Press TV] The US Treasury Department on Wednesday imposed new sanctions on 37 Iranian "front companies" based in Germany, Malta and Cyprus which are allegedly owned or controlled by the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRSL), and the five Iranians are managers or directors of the firms.

"We will continue to expose the elaborate structures and tactics Iran uses to shield its shipping line from international scrutiny," AFP quoted US Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Stuart Levey as saying.

The new measures ban transactions between the companies and individuals in question and US citizens.

Last month the US imposed financial and travel sanctions on eight senior Iranian officials, including Commander of the Islamic theocracy Guards Corps (IRGC) Mohammad-Ali Jafari and Deputy Police Chief Brigadier-General Ahmad Reza Radan, accusing them of human rights
... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you...
abuse during the post-election unrest in Iran in 2009.

The UN Security Council adopted the fourth round of sanctions against Tehran in June under intense US pressure, which claims Iran's nuclear program may have potential military applications.

Shortly after the UN sanctions, the US imposed fresh unilateral sanctions on Iran's financial and energy sectors, encouraging other countries to abandon investment in the Iranian market.

The US then pressured Japan, Canada, and Australia to impose similar unilateral sanctions on the Islamic Theocratic Republic, targeting investments in energy-related industries.

Iran says that as a member of the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has a right to use the peaceful applications of nuclear energy for electricity generation and medical research.

While the US possesses and has used nuclear weapons in the past, Washington, in a politically-motivated move, has imposed additional sanctions against the Islamic Theocratic Republic, which does not possess nuclear weapons nor does it seek to develop such weapons.

Regarding the ineffectiveness of sanctions, Iranian officials maintain that having numerous neighbors and a diverse range of trade partners gives the country a special economic obscurity.

The total value of the Islamic Theocratic Republic's exports reached USD 14.448 billion which indicated a 23 percent increase compare with last year.

Women in Dahiyeh Gynecology Clinic Clash with STL Investigators
[An Nahar] A group of women charged at investigators from a U.N. probe into the murder of ex-premier Rafik Hariri at a Beirut Southern Suburbs gynecology clinic Wednesday, snatching a briefcase but causing no injuries, a doctor said. Doctor Iman Sharara, who runs the private obstetrics and gynecology clinic, told news hounds a team of two male investigators, their female translator and a plain clothes security officer arrived at her practice mid-morning on a scheduled appointment.

"They asked me for the phone numbers of between 14 and 17 people who visited my practice since 2003 and I told them it would take me some time to review my files," she said at her clinic in the Hizbullah-controlled southern suburb of Beirut.

When she opened the door to inform her secretary of the files needed, Sharara said she was surprised to see a crowd of some 30 women had stormed the waiting room although she had canceled all appointments that morning.

A security source told Agence France Presse the angry women rushed towards the interrogators, shouting insults at them, and managed to wrangle a briefcase from the pair who beat feet unscathed.

"The Office of the Prosecutor takes this incident very seriously and we are currently looking into it," the media relations unit of the The Hague-based Special Tribunal for Leb (STL) told AFP by email.

Sharara's lawyer Mustafa Shqeir told news hounds his client had sought legal advice and conferred with the medical practitioners' union before agreeing to meet the investigators.

"We are still willing to cooperate with Lebanese authorities and investigators representing the tribunal as per international decree and procedure," Shqeir said.

MP Yassine Jaber of the AMAL Movement, an ally of Hizbullah, said the incident was a sign the tribunal was "not welcome" in Leb, in an interview with local television.

Hizbullah's Al-Manar television said the quarrel erupted before noon when investigators "surprisingly" entered the clinic of Sharara.

It gave no other details.

LBC television station, however, said the squabble developed when demonstrators, "about 150 women", stormed the clinic where two STL investigators and an interpreter were.

NBN TV said the STL investigation team forced its way into the clinic, adding that security forces intervened to prevent further escalation.

The U.N.-backed STL was set up by a 2007 U.N. resolution to find and try the killers of Hariri, who was assassinated in a massive Beirut bombing on February 14, 2005.

Leb is facing a full-blown crisis over the tribunal as unconfirmed reports indicate it is set to accuse members of Hizbullah.

Hizbullah has confirmed several of its members, both male and female, have been interrogated in connection with the Hariri murder.

The Syrian- and Iranian-backed party has also accused the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society of interfering in Lebanese affairs and warned such an eventuality will have repercussions in Leb, calling instead for a local investigation.

Saudi-backed Prime Minister Saad Hariri, son of the slain ex-premier, has meanwhile vowed to see the tribunal through.

Nigeria intercepts 13 Iran missile containers possibly destined for Gaza
Nigeria's secret service said on Tuesday it had intercepted 13 containers of weapons from Iran in what Israeli defense sources believe may be part of a new smuggling route from Iran to Hamas in Gaza.

Rocket launchers, grenades and other explosives camouflaged as building material were seized in the Nigerian port of Lagos after being unloaded from an Iranian ship.

Nigerian media reports said the ship, which came from Iran, docked in Lagos' port for a few hours only, unloaded 13 containers and sailed on.

The bill of lading said the shipment consisted of building materials, Nigerian State Security Service spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar said.

"On opening the first container, the service operatives discovered rocket launchers, grenades and other explosives," Ogar said, adding the weapons were concealed among crates of floor tiles.

The SSS had received intelligence ahead of time about the intention to smuggle weapons in containers via Lagos and was prepared for it, reports said.

Nigerian National Security Adviser Andrew Owoye Azazi declined to say what ship carried the weapons into the port. He said the federal government would destroy the weapons.

Osama warns France over ban on veils
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden warned France today that its ban on the veil in public places justified violence against its nationals as forces of Evil kept seven hostages captive, five of them French.

In an audio recording aired by Al-Jazeera television, Bin Laden said last month's kidnapping claimed by the jihadist network's North African branch in the Sahara desert in northern Niger was a warning.

He called on France to pull its troops out of Afghanistan.

"As you wrongly have decided that you have the right to ban Mohammedan women from wearing the veil, is it not our right to drive out your conquerors by killing them?" Bin Laden asked. "The kidnapping of your experts in Niger... is in retaliation for the tyranny you practice against our Mohammedan nation.

"How is it possible to interfere in the affairs of Mohammedans, especially in north and west Africa, and support your agents against us and exploit much of our resources via suspect transactions while our people there suffer from poverty and misery," he said in the speech, which lasted 1 minute 55 seconds.

The seven hostages -- five Frenchies, a Togolese and a Madagascan -- were seized in a Niger uranium-mining town on the night of September 15 to September 16.

They are believed by intelligence agents in countries concerned to be held in an area of the Sahara desert in neighbouring Mali.

The Al-Qaeda leader warned the French government that continuation of its role in the NATO force in Afghanistan would rebound on domestic security.

"The way to protect your security is to bring your tyranny against our nation to an end, most importantly to withdraw from the damned war of (former US president George W.) Bush in Afghanistan," he said in the message, the authenticity of which could not immediately be verified.

"How could you take part in occupying our countries and support the Americans in killing our children and women, and then expect to live in peace and security?" he asked.
