#4  I remember seeing her as a kid in Fairbanks' The Thief of Bagdad, and thinking both that she was a very good actress, and also that she was smokin' hot.

The main actress in that movie was so so-so that she went from one minor part to another, actually *ending* her career playing uncredited roles. That smarts.

Afghanistan
UK aid worker killed in Afghanistan rescue bid
[Pak Daily Times] A British aid worker, Linda Norgrove held hostage in Afghanistan since 26 September, was killed by her captors after a failed rescue bid, the British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Saturday.

Linda worked for Development Alternatives Inc (DAI), a global consulting company based in the Washington which does contract work in Afghanistan for the United States Agency for International Development. DAI President and CEO James Boomgard expressed grief over Linda's death. Linda and three Afghan colleagues were kidnapped in eastern Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Binny's house in Chitral...
on September. 26 after being ambushed. Police fought a gunbattle with the kidnappers near the attack site before the assailants decamped. Linda's co-workers were released shortly afterward. Hague said that his allies received information about where Linda was being held so they decided to take action to rescue her. Both British and NATO officials refused to provide more specific information.

The top commander of US Gen David Petraeus said that Afghan and coalition security forces did everything in their power to rescue Linda and NATO forces in Afghanistan. He added Linda was a courageous person with a passion to improve the lives of Afghan people, and sadly she lost her life in their service.

On the other side, Spokesman for Italy's Defense Ministry Gen Massimo Fogari said that four Italian soldiers were killed and another was maimed seriously in the kaboom on Saturday. He added the bomb exploded as a 70-vehicle convoy passed by cut-throats in western Farah province. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi expressed his grief over the tragic ambush and said that he was grateful to all Italian soldiers who, in various missions around the world, allow their country to keep its international commitments in support of peace and against any form of terrorism. The deaths brought the number of NATO forces killed to 24, this month.

Africa Horn
AU: Peacekeepers Gain Ground in Mogadishu
Deputy special representative of the chairman of the AU Commission for Somalia, Wafula Wamunyinyi says its peacekeeping troops are now in control of more than 45% of the Somali capital of Mogadishu.
That's better than the three-blocks the Somali government controls.
"Our troops now controls large part in Mogadishu, we will continue capturing more other bases. Our target is to seize 50% of Mogadishu until end of this month," Wamunyinyi told reporters in Nairobi.

Uganda and Burundi are the only countries that have contributed troops to the African Union peacekeeping mission in war-torn Somalia, which seized many bases in week of clashes with the insurgents

Wamunyinyi said AU soldiers are approximately 7,200 troops who defeat insurgent groups, urged Somalia government forces to implement heavy attacks against the oppositions. The AU has appealed to the international community for more supports to increase the force to 20,000 and asked its members to consider sending troops to support the Ugandan and Burundian contingents.
Here's a hint - take control where the luxury hotels, brothels, and 5-star restaurants are. That's the only way the international community vultures will pay attention to you.
Is there anything like that left in Mogadishu?
Move the UN there and leeches will follow ...
According to Wamunyinyi, the African nations willing to increase assistance, Burundi is ready to send 1,000 soldiers, Guinea is likely to commit 2,000 troops and Malawi is considering its own contribution.

Insurgents of the two main Islamic groups, al-Shabaab and Hisbul Islam, control most of southern and central parts of Somalia following a three-year battle to overthrow the Ahmed government.

Rivals clash as UN holds Khartoum talks
[Pak Daily Times] Clashes with separatists erupted in the Sudanese capital on Saturday as opponents of the country's potential break-up in a southern independence vote due in January demonstrated during a visit by UN ambassadors.

Police used batons to disperse around 30 southern independence supporters who were staging a counter-demonstration during the government-sponsored pro-unity rally, an AFP correspondent reported. Some 3,000 unity supporters were gathered near the presidential palace when the southerners, dressed in orange T-shirts and caps, started chanting "No to Unity. Yes to secession," angering the northern crowd.

Riot police intervened to separate the rival groups. The trouble came as envoys from the 15 UN Security Council members were in the capital on the final stage of a four-day visit to Sudan in which they expressed the international community's concern that the referendum go ahead on schedule.

The planned referendum was the centrepiece of a 2005 peace agreement that ended Africa's longest-running conflict, and south Sudan regional president Salva Kiir has repeatedly said the January 9 polling date set up by the deal is "sacrosanct."

Arabia
Yemeni intelligence agent killed
[Arab News] Two masked men riding a motorcycle rubbed out an intelligence police in the city of Mukalla, southern Yemen.

Abdul Aziz Abdullah Bashraheel was rubbed out on Friday by two masked gunnies on a motorcycle in Foha, west of Mukalla, capital of Hadramawt province, a security official said.

He was with members of his family outside a store when he was attacked by the gunnies, who decamped afterward.

No one claimed responsibly for the attack, but it bears Al-Qaeda's hallmark which used motorcycles as a tactic in assassinating security personnel in other restive governorates of Shabwa, Abyan, Lahj and Dhalae. Following the attack, the police sealed the area and jugged suspected motorcycles.

In Abyan province further west, a police car was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades, also on Friday.

Two coppers were maimed, as well as a man whom they had jugged on criminal charges and who suffered serious injuries.

The suspect, Mohammed Al-Jaadani, had been jugged in the city of Loder, which was the site of clashes between the army and suspected Al-Qaeda forces of Evil in August that killed 33 people.

Loder is also a focal point of activity by the Southern Movement, a coalition of groups demanding either independence or autonomy for the south.

Separately, Specialist Criminal Court in Sana'a started on Friday the trial of Al-Qaeda forces of Evil of Arhab Cell. The cell members are accused of involvement in planning to attack government and foreign facilities and assassinating security officials. Three defendants appeared before the court-Farj Hadi,Qasem Ali Al-Usami, Ali Nasser AL-Quttaish, while health conditions prevented Yahia Dahan from showing up for the hearing.

Qaeda militant admits to deadly Yemen attacks
SANAA -- A self-confessed militant admitted on Saturday to carrying out deadly attacks on military targets and oil facilities in Yemen, as four other suspected Al-Qaeda members went on trial for planning attacks.
"Yeah! It was ME! I dun it! I dunnit allright, and I'm laughing about it! You hear me? Laughing! Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha [thump] [collapse] [gurgle]
"Thank you, bailiff."
"You're welcome, your Honor."
Saleh al-Shaoush was arrested on January 30 as he prepared to carry out a suicide bombing in the southeastern port of Mukalla. He had been stopped on his motorbike and found to be wearing an explosives belt and carrying two bombs.

Shaoush admitted in court taking part in seven deadly attacks in Hadramawt and Marib provinces. "The acts attributed to me are correct," he said. "I prepared and carried out these operations voluntarily and without duress."
"Hit him again, bailiff."
"Yes, your Honor." [thump]
"Aiiiieeee ..."
The court in Sanaa set Monday as a date for final deliberations in the case of Shaoush, who faces the death penalty if convicted.

In a separate hearing, the same court opened proceedings against four Al-Qaeda suspects for allegedly planning attacks on national and foreign targets in Yemen. According to the charge sheet, they are accused of attacking police and military installations, murdering security officials and resisting the armed forces.

The principal suspect, Yahia Dahan, was said to be ill and did not appear in court. Another defendant, Faraj Hadi, said in court that Dahan had been tortured.
"Why's he sick, bailiff?"
"I think I hit 'im too hard, your Honor."
"Very well then, mind you're more careful in the future."

Bangladesh
'Outlaw' killed in 'shootout'
[Bangla Daily Star] A regional leader of outlawed Gono Bahini
Maoist communists, as I recall, although I could be wrong. I'm still not sure what Third Wayers are...
was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and law enforcers at Bhedmari village of Mirpur upazila
It's on the map -- really. The 1:15 one, anyway... somewhere. You'll need to hone your map-reading skillz, though.
early hours yesterday.

The deseased, Amzad Hossain Mollik, 42,
A rich man. He had three names.
was working to regroup the party cadres in the area, police claimed. He was accused in five cases, including three murder charges.
What is it about Communist cadres and crime? Thoroughgoing badmen, all of them -- their mothers should be ashamed.
A joint team of Mirpur Police Station and Detective Branch (DB) of police raided a village field
Properly proletarian..
where Amzad and his associates were holding a secret meeting around 12:15am.
A bit early, but perhaps they were just getting started.
The gang threw two bombs
That seems a bit extreme. Most miscreants, even Communists, are content with shutter guns and such.
at them which prompted the police to retaliate with gunshots, added police.

"The law enforcers found Amzad's body on the field after the shootout," said Assistant Superintended of Police of Kushtia, Chokdar Abdul Halim. However,
The infamous However...
his accomplices managed to evaporate the scene.

Police recovered an LG, 16 rounds of bullet and four bombs from the spot.
Interesting that the police report only says that the first two bombs were thrown, not that they exploded. One wonders whether the AQAP master bomber came for a training seminar -- the Pakistani and Iraqi IED makers were so much more effective.
With this, a total of 12 'crossfire' incidents took place in Kushtia in last nine months since January 1, leaving 13 alleged offenders dead. The figure was 42 in 2009.

Bangla: Lashkar's explosives expert captured
[Bangla Daily Star] Yet another Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative, this time an explosives expert, and his local aide were jugged by Rab in the city's Uttara early yesterday with a huge amount of explosives and bomb making materials.
Good thing they were captured, then.
It was the first arrest of any LeT bomb expert in the country, according to Commander Mohammad Sohail, Rab's legal and media wing director.

He said the battalion had recovered 30 kilograms of high explosive with the capacity equivalent to trinitrotoluene (TNT) and six bottles of liquid chemical from their possession.

However,
The infamous However...
it couldn't be learnt whether the Pakistain-based turban outfit is plotting any bomb attack in Bangladesh or neighbouring country.
Not yet, perhaps. Send for the #7 mustache wax and the #4 truncheon!
No, no, no! It's the number FOUR mustache wax, the real heavy, tarry stuff, and the number SEVEN truncheon, with a rich, Corinthian leather-wrapped handle!
The LeT man, Wazed Khan alias Zafar alias Salman, 27, is a Pak national.
Pakistani and plural aliases? Book him, Danno!
His aide Abu Bakkar Siddique, 49, is a stranded Pak and a resident of Turag Housing in the city's Mohammadpur area.
"Stranded Pak"? What on earth does that mean?
The Rab jugged LeT members first on February 28, said Sohail. So far nine operatives of the internationally banned organisation have been caught by the battalion and of them, four are locals and the rest are Paks.

A joint team of Rab intelligence wing and Rab-1 made yesterday's arrests around 12:15am from Abdullahpur, Uttara after a tip-off from LeT man Maulana Mohammad Imran, another Pak jugged on September 29 in Narayanganj.
How good of the good maulana to share that particular bit of information.
Another Rab team recovered huge explosives from a house at Shahibagh, Savar on October 6 acting on Maulana Imran's information, Sohail added.

Wazed Khan came to the country on April 7 this year with a tourist visa on orders from a top LeT leader, Abdul Kuddus alias Abdul Karim Tunda alias Babaji.
Does Bangladesh get a lot of tourists from Pakistan? Coming to see where Daddy marched through when he was in the army, perhaps to visit the half-siblings Daddy left behind?
Wazed while a Lahore Islamic University student received training on explosives from Abdul Kuddus.

Sohail said, Abdul Kuddus alias Tunda, who is now detained in a Pak jail, visited Bangladesh and held meetings with JMB chief Sheikh Abdur Rahman, who was later executed.
This is getting complicated.
In Bangladesh Mohammad Imran received Wazed and introduced him to Bakkar, the owner of Anika Chemical, Sohail said adding, Bakkar arranged Wazed's accommodation at his residence in Turag Housing.
No doubt Sohail has arranged for Mr. Bakkar's accomodation in the Rab interview rooms...
Maulana Imran and Bakkar provided Wazed with different chemicals to produce explosives. The bomb expert was asked to handover the finished explosives to Maulana Imran, said Sohail.

During interrogation, Bakkar admitted he had bought the chemicals from Lalbagh, Old Dhaka.

In 2007 Bakkar got acquainted with Maulana Imran while Bakkar was residing at a rented house in Mirpur. The two became involved in the business of fake Indian currency.

Several Pak operatives of LeT are active in the country and they have made explosives. But their targets are yet to be known, said Sohail. The Pak operatives were not given the address of the other LeT teams for their safety. The law enforcers could not learn how many of them are now in Bangladesh.

Sohail said the LeT has no unit in the country. But it is trying to use the country as a haven for running business of fake currencies and making explosives.

Rab personnel also seized passports of the two detainees. The passport of Bakkar shows he made eight trips to Pakistain and three trips in India recently.
Oh dear. A good thing he was caught.

29 NATO oil tankers torched
[Pak Daily Times] Twenty nine NATO oil tankers were attacked and destroyed in the Mithari area of Sibi Plains in the early hours of Saturday. The tankers were carrying fuel for US and allied forces in Afghanistan and came under massive guerrilla attack by heavily armed assailants.

Eyewitnesses said 29 oil tankers were parked at Sarawn Hotel in Mithari when some 30 unidentified gunnies on cycles of violence opened fire and lobbed rockets on them, setting the tankers ablaze.

The fire in the tankers also engulfed nearby shops. Firefighters were also called from Sibi district, who, after seven hours, were able to put it out control. At least three Balochistan Levies personnel sustained bullet injuries as they resisted the attack on the oil tankers, official sources confirmed. They were taken to the Civil Hospital Sibi for treatment. One of the injured was referred to a hospital in Quetta as he was in critical condition and needed specialised treatment.

According to the driver of one of the tankers, Khair Muhammad, 29 oil tankers and four shops were destroyed in the attack. The National Highway linking Balochistan with Sindh was blocked because of massive fire on the roadside.

#1  The US military may have a good alternative available. While a C-130 can carry about 5,000 gallons of fuel, they likely already have cargo airships that can carry 200 tons, or about 70,000 gallons.

200 tons is about "medium carry", and they are trying to get their hands on 500 to 1,000 tons super heavy cargo airships, but they have 200 ton carry airships right now.

I'd guess the only thing they need is to quickly fab a cellular transport container, to limit fluid shift.

Pakistan reopens main land NATO supplies route
Pakistan’s foreign ministry on Saturday announced the reopening of the main land route for NATO supplies crossing into Afghanistan from Torkham in the northwest “with immediate effect”.

Torkham lies on the main NATO supply route to Afghanistan, where US and NATO forces are fighting a nine-year Taliban insurgency, and is thus vital to the Afghan war effort.

“After assessing the security situation in all its aspects, the government has decided to reopen the NATO/ISAF supply from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border at Torkham with immediate effect,” the ministry said in a statement, referring to NATO’s International Security Assistance Force. “Our relevant authorities are now in the process of coordinating with authorities on the other side of the border to ensure smooth resumption of the supply traffic.”

Pakistan shut the route at Torkham in protest at a cross-border NATO helicopter attack that officials blamed for the deaths of three Pakistani soldiers. The alliance said its personnel had fired back in self-defence.

The US ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson Wednesday apologised on behalf of the American people for the “terrible accident”.

Patterson said Thursday in a statement: “A joint investigation of the incident had established that the US helicopters had mistaken the Pakistani Frontier Scouts for insurgents they had been pursuing.”
It was an easy mistake to make ...
Amid the differences over the NATO helicopter attack, more than 100 NATO oil tankers and supply trucks have been destroyed in militant attacks in just over a week as the rebels step up their efforts to disrupt supplies.

The Pakistani Taliban have vowed more raids to avenge a new wave of US drone strikes targeting Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in the northwest.

Two wounded in clashes near Kirkuk
KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq: A guard on a mosque al-Touz district, south of Kirkuk, thwarted an attempt by an armed group to emplace an improvised explosive device, resulting in the injury of a gunman and his arrest and one of the mosque guards, a security source said on Saturday.

“An armed group tried to plant an IED near al-Wahhab mosque in central Touz district, (80 km) south of Kirkuk, where clashes erupted between the mosque guards and the gunmen,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The clashes left a gunman wounded in his head and one of the mosque guards,” he said. He added that the rest of the “terrorist” group escaped.

“The police intensified efforts in search of the gunmen and rushed the wounded to a nearby hospital for treatment,” the source said, not giving more information.
