#1  TAD on Kaua'i:

We had a great experience this week. We were looking for Kalihiwai Beach (near Princeville) and my navigator Kilo Bravo had me turn one click too soon. We were on the road with the right name but on the wrong side of the river.

As we proceeded down the hill we spotted a turnout overlooking the bay. Below us were giant waves running parallel to the cliff with some sets containing pipelines. Needless to say there were 25 to 35 world class surfers partaking of the opportunity.

We spotted two young women in the group and after getting past the skimpy bikinis we noticed one was missing her left arm. Right away we realized this was Bethany Hamilton. Bethany lost her arm to a 15 ft Tiger Shark when she was 13. (See link to her name)

We had a chance to meet her after she finished her runs. She was very gracious and quite willing to talk to us. No self-pity, no candidate for welfare or disability here. With trust in God she is moving forward with her life and pursuing her dreams. What an inspiration.

Movie to be released soon.

Afghanistan
'US tax money gone to Taliban militants'
[Iran Press TV] A probe finds that a US contractor in Afghanistan may have 'inadvertently' funneled millions of dollars in American taxpayer money to Taliban cut-thoats. A year-long probe into the US Agency for International Development (USAID) found that the funds were probably paid in the form of bribes and protection money.
Go get it back. There, problem fixed.
The suspected payments were allegedly made by subcontractors of a company based in the state of Maryland.

USAID carries out reconstruction projects in some of Afghanistan's most remote and risky war zones.

The US invaded Afghanistan with the aim of toppling the Taliban regime and dismantling al-Qaeda network. The war has left hundreds of thousands of Afghans as well as over two thousand US-led foreign troops dead. The loss of lives has dramatically reduced support for the Afghan war.

NATO airstrike kills 15 insurgents in E. Afghanistan
(Xinhua) -- An Arclight airstrike launched by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) waxed 15 beturbanned goons in the Tsowkey district of Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Binny's house in Chitral...
Friday.
Somebody certainly is in a mood lately. That makes...(carry the three plus seventeen to the third power.. oh dear, I misplaced the decimal point somewhere along the way) an awful lot of dead bad guys. They'll be running out of candidates for Number Three pretty soon at this rate, you know, and then what'll they do? One simply can't run an organization without Number Threes to run the departments, you know.
A blurb issued by the ISAF said the beturbanned goons were attempting to set up an attack position in the district while being struck by an ISAF air weapons team.
Next week they'll have become a wedding party, of course...
Did you see the bride's gown? Simply stunning! It didn't go well with her beard and Adam's apple, though.
Initial reports indicate all rounds were on target, and there were no injuries to bystanders, innocent or otherwise, in the area, said the blurb.

Giving Chinese journalism too much credit, but 'all' and 'rounds' makes me think artillery rather than bombs, missiles, or machined guns. Spectre?

#3  Had to cash a check in Louisiana to get back to Colorado last week, so we visited Barksdale AFB. Barksdale is home to a wing of B-52H aircraft. Had one pass about 500 feet over our heads as we neared the base. STILL love that A/C. Would love to see the entire wing at Barksdale make a round trip to Rawalpindi/Islamabad armed with tons of weapons on the flight out, and return empty. Just to show Pakistan we can do it.

Africa Subsaharan
Nigerian Independence Day blasts kill seven
[Al Arabiya] Two car bombs blew up on Friday as Nigeria celebrated its 50th independence anniversary, killing at least seven people in an unprecedented attack on the capital by suspected Islamic snuffies from the country's oil region.
The natives have such quaint customs. And so photogenic, too.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), the main thug group in the country's oil-rich southern delta, had threatened to attack the festivities and warned people to stay away.

"For 50 years, the people of the Niger Delta have had their land and resources stolen from them," the group said in a statement. While Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, is oil rich most people live on less than $1 a day. The delta is very impoverished and polluted from spills.

A senior intelligence officer was among the seven killed, one of his colleagues from the intelligence service said on condition of anonymity.

"There were more casualties at the second kaboom because the first kaboom drew crowds to the scene, which is close to the second kaboom," the intelligence officer said.

Police front man Emmanuel Ojukwu said earlier that "my information is that there was an kaboom in a house" and he could not confirm any fatalities.

However,
The infamous However...
some 10 cars were destroyed and the blast did not appear to originate from a house, an AFP journalist said.

Although most of its activities have been focused on the creeks and swamps of the delta, MEND has struck further afield, including at off-shore oil installations and in the heart of Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos.

"Several bombs have been successfully planted in and around the venue by our operatives working inside the government security services," the warning email, signed by MEND front man Jomo Gbomo, said.

A third and smaller kaboom hit a venue at Eagle Square where President Goodluck Jonathan stood with other dignitaries, about a 10-minute walk from where the car bombs detonated. A security agent was apparently injured in that kaboom.

Friday's attacks would be among the thugs' boldest yet, striking in Nigeria's capital during an event with heavy security held hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the delta.

#2  Fred, you may want to double-check the rewriting code thingey; when used on this article, it gives the impression that MEND was an islamic group. I don't know if it is or not, but the Wikipedia entry makes no mention of a religious affiliation, and if it's based out of the Niger Delta, I doubt it is.

Arabia
3 soldiers killed in al-Qaida attack on Yemen's Shabwa governor
(Xinhua) -- At least three internal security troops were bumped off and five others maimed on Wednesday when a group of al-Qaeda gunnies fell upon the convoy of the Shabwa governor and other brass hats in south Yemen, a provincial security official told Xinhua.

The official said the al-Qaeda's attack took place in Yashbam valley, close to al-Hota town where combined security and armed forces were still duking it out with fighters of the resurgent al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in the country's southeast province of Shabwa.

"Shabwa Governor Ali Hassan al-Ahmadi and Deputy Chief of General Staff, Brigadier General Salim al-Qetin, and other top officials survived al-Qaeda's attack," the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"Three security soldiers were bumped off and another five soldiers maimed in fierce clashes with al-Qaeda murderers to protect the officials," he said.

The Yemeni Defense Ministry said later that the Shabwa governor and other top security and army officials survived on Wednesday a deadly attack by al-Qaeda gunnies who managed to kill one soldier and wound other security escorts in an ambush in southeast Yemen.

"One soldier was killed and nine other security bodyguards injured in a bushwhack by al-Qaeda cut-throats in Yashbam valley in the province of Shabwa during Wednesday's sunset," the ministry said in a statement on its website, citing Shabwa's security director Ahmad al-Makdashi.

"The security head of al-Saieed district was among the injured, " al- Makdashi said.

The cut-throats with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade ( RPG) launched attack from their hideouts in some houses in Yashbam area when the official's convoy en-route from the house of Brigadier General Salim al-Qetin to Ataq, the quiet provincial capital city of Shabwa, he added.

"Security forces were dispatched to the scene and set besiege to the area to bag the terrorist elements and bring them to justice," he said.

Shabwa has become a stronghold of AQAP, which has witnessed a series of deadly battles between al-Qaeda gunnies and internal security troops over the past month.

Last week, Yemen's Defense Ministry said in a statement that the combined forces of security and army units cleansed Hota town in Shabwa of the entrenched al-Qaeda cut-throats and forced the rest to beat feet to surrounding mountains.

According to intelligence reports, as many as 200 al-Qaeda cut-throats had arrived in the town from the northeastern province of Marib and the southern province of Abyan, bringing the total number of al-Qaeda gunnies there to about 300, he said.

The Yemeni government has intensified security operations and air raids against terrorist groups after the Yemen-based al-Qaeda wing claimed credit for an attempt to blow up a U.S.-bound passenger plane last December.

Eight killed in Shiite rebel festivities in north Yemen

(Xinhua) -- Yemeni Iranian catspaws killed two soldiers and six pro-government rustics in fresh clashes on Wednesday which enabled the turbans to grab off a large-scale region in northern Yemen, a security official said.

The move was one of a series of systematic violations of the latest truce deal brokered by the Qatari government between Sanaa regime and the rebels.

"Houthis (rebels) are exploiting the government's preoccupation in fighting al-Qaeda cut-throats and in expanding their domination over northern remote districts," the official admitted to Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"They (the bad guyz) raided Marashi district of the northeast al-Jouf province, killing two soldiers and six pro-government rustics and wounding dozens of the army," he said, adding "Houthis forced local residents out after taking control of the district."

Earlier this month, an official statement on the interior ministry's website accused the rebels of establishing a number of checkpoints in Barat district in al-Jouf province, as well as stepping up its cut-throats in some regions of the province.

Yemen has recently come under increasing pressure from the international community, which asked the Sanaa to solve its internal conflicts and focus on fighting terrorist groups after the Yemen-based al-Qaeda wing claimed credit for a failed attempt to blow up a U.S. passenger plane bound for Detroit last year.

Britain
British police find weapons used to kill Dr Imran Farooq
[Dawn] British police said Friday they had recovered a knife and brick used in the attack on Pak politician Imran Farooq, who was stabbed to death outside his home in north London last month.

"Detectives have recovered a 5.5-inch (14cm) bladed kitchen knife and a house brick which were used in the attack on Dr Imran Farooq in Edgware two weeks ago," a statement from London's Metropolitan Police said.

It said the items were found in Green Lane, the street where the 50-year-old was found with head injuries and stab wounds on September 16. He was declared dead at the scene.

Officers from the Met's counter-terrorism command were trying to trace two Asian men in connection with the murder, police said, but added that they "retain an open mind as to a motive."

No arrests have yet been made and police urged witnesses to come forward.

Farooq was a founding member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), a major force in Pakistain's biggest city Karachi.

The city went on alert following his death, after the murder of an MQM politician the previous month triggered a wave of violence, and traders ceased business for the day in mourning.

Farooq claimed asylum in Britain in 1999. He was wanted in Pakistain over scores of charges including torture and murder related to the MQM's activities but always claimed the accusations were politically motivated.

The London-based Observer newspaper reported on Sunday that Farooq may have been about to leave the MQM and join a new party being set up by former Pakistain president Pervez Musharraf, who also lives in London.

Mexico officials: mayor killed in $6,000 hit
[Arab News] Two men were jugged for killing a small-town Mexican mayor over a land dispute in a $6,000 contract killing, prosecutors said Thursday.

Nuevo Leon state Attorney General Alejandro Garza y Garza ruled out the involvement of drug gangs that have been blamed for the assassination of many other mayors in Mexico.

Prisciliano Rodriguez, mayor of Doctor Gonzalez, was bumped off Sept. 23 along with an aide. He was the fourth mayor killed in northeastern Mexico in a month.

Garza y Garza said the two detained men confessed to killing the mayor over a land dispute. He said an uncle of one of the two suspects hired them a week before the assassination, asking them if they "wanted a little job." The uncle remains on the lam.

The men were paid an initial $3,000 and given an R-15 rifle, an Uzi and a revolver, Garza y Garza said. On the day of the assassination, the uncle called his nephew and demanded the money back if they did not carry out the killing, the prosecutor said.

The suspects told police they traveled later that day to Doctor Gonzalez, where the mayor was coordinating a program to provide metal roofing to residents, Garza y Garza said.

He said the pair waited until Rodriguez got out of his car and opened fire about 20 times. The uncle allegedly met with them later that day and paid them the remaining $3,000.

Police recovered guns buried in the backyard of one of the suspects, and are checking them to determine if they match those used in the assassination, Garza y Garza said.

He did not give details of the land dispute.

Small-town mayors are frequently assassinated in Mexico.
That seems an odd custom...
Land disputes are sometimes the motive, but most attacks have been blamed on drug gangs that have tried to use isolated, lightly patrolled towns to hide and hold kidnap victims, weapons and drugs.

German man confesses in court to terrorism charges
[Dawn] A man who was allegedly a member of a group that plotted to attack U.S. targets in Germany has confessed in court to several of the charges against him.

German news agency DAPD reported Friday that the man, identified only as Salih S., confessed he had trained in a terrorist camp in Pakistain.

Salih S., who is on trial at a state court in Frankfurt, also confessed to procuring GPS devices, night vision goggles and other items for Adem Yilmaz. Yilmaz was convicted with three others earlier this year of plotting an attack in 2007 that a judge said could have killed large numbers of U.S. soldiers and civilians had it not been thwarted.

Salih S. was jugged in 2008 in Turkey and extradited to Germany in July.

India-Pakistan
US drone strike kills six in Pakistan
A US dronezap has killed six beturbanned goons in Pakistain's lawless tribal belt along the Afghan border, local security officials said.

Four missiles hit a house used by beturbanned goons in Dashgah village near Datta Khel town, some 45km west of Miranshah, the main town in North Wazoo tribal district, in the attack.

"Two US drones fired four missiles and destroyed the house. Six beturbanned goons were killed in this attack," a Pak security official based in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar said on condition of anonymity.

Two intelligence officials in Miranshah also confirmed the attack and the corpse count.

"All of them were beturbanned goons attached to the Haqqani group," one intelligence official said.

The second intelligence official said that initial reports suggested the dead were Uzbek beturbanned goons from Afghanistan.

Pak officials have reported that at least 21 US dronezaps have killed around 120 people in September, the highest monthly tally of attacks.

The overwhelming majority of the attacks have been carried out in North Wazoo, considered a bastion of al-Qaeda-linked and Taliban capos opposed to the US-led war in Afghanistan.

Most of the strikes have targeted the Haqqani network, one of the strongest US foes in Afghanistan whose leadership is based in North Wazoo.

Washington has classified Pakistain's tribal belt on the Afghan border as a global headquarters of al-Qaeda and the most dangerous place on Earth.

A covert US drone war in Pakistain has killed around 1140 people in about 140 strikes since August 2008, including a number of senior bad boys, but the attacks fuel anti-American sentiment in the conservative Mohammedan country.

Under US pressure to crack down on Islamist havens, Pakistain has stepped up military operations against largely homegrown beturbanned goons in the area.

But commanders have so far avoided a major offensive in North Wazoo, arguing that gains elsewhere need to be consolidated to prevent their troops from being stretched too thin.

Naxal rebels kill 21 in kangaroo courts: Indian official
(Xinhua) -- The Indian governmen Friday said that the country's Commie Naxal rebels have murdered 21 people in public this year after pronouncing them guilty in kangaroo courts, known as "Jan Adalats" or public court.

"The number of 'Jan Adalats' has risen to 48 in the current year up to August 31 -- up from 38 in the corresponding period last year. The number of persons murdered has risen to 21 from 11 last year," Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram told the media in the national capital.

The Home Minister said that the main targets of Naxal rebels were cops and alleged "police informers".

"Every one who swears by the rule of law must condemn these kangaroo courts and brutal executions," he said.

Eight militants killed in battles in Indian Kashmir
[Dawn] Indian security forces killed eight bully boyz on Friday in two separate gunbattles in Indian Kashmir, an army front man said, adding some of them were trying to enter the Indian territory from neigbouring Pakistain.

Indian army front man Vineet Sood told Rooters a policeman was also killed in one of the shootouts.

The clashes occurred amid mounting protests against New Delhi's rule in the disputed Himalayan region, which has been in a siege-like state of strikes, protests and curfew for months.

India and Pakistain both claim Kashmir while ruling it in parts.

More than 100 people have been killed and scores jugged in protests since June -- among the biggest since an armed separatist rebellion broke out in Kashmir in 1989.

Five bully boyz were killed in the north of Kashmir as they tried to cross into the Indian side from Pak territory, while three bully boyz and the policeman were killed in a battle in the Ganderbal area on the outskirts of Srinagar.

Sood said reports indicated exchanges of fire were continuing at both places.

India's federal government is trying hard to defuse the tension in the region and on Wednesday decided to free jailed protesters and reduce the number of checkpoints in the main city Srinagar as part of a peace move.

India has been concerned that the flare-up in Kashmir could affect its international image days ahead of the the Commonwealth Games, which open in New Delhi this weekend.
New Delhi has repeatedly accused Pakistain of arming, training and sending bully boyz to its part of Kashmir, a charge Islamabad denies.

India's security officials say bully boyz based in Pakistain have stepped up efforts to infiltrate into Indian Kashmir before winter snow blocks the Himalayan mountain passes.

"The army has continued to focus on conducting relentless counter infiltration operations on the Line of Control (LoC) as well as elimination of forces of Evil in the hinterland," the
Indian army said in a statement.

Iraq security forces stymie Baghdad bank robbery
[Arab News] Security forces foiled an attempt to rob a state-run Storied Baghdad bank on Thursday after gunnies detonated bombs to distract guards, but two police officers were killed in a shootout with the attackers, security sources said.

Authorities said they captured four of at least ten gunnies who attacked the Rafidain bank in the Bayaa district of southwestern Baghdad.

Some of the snuffy groups that took up arms after the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein has turned to crime to finance operations, attacking banks, gold markets and jewelry shops. But authorities said they did not yet know whether the bank suspects were Islamic snuffies or a criminal gang.

The attackers planted and set off a series of roadside kabooms near the bank to distract police officers guarding the building, an Interior Ministry source said.

"They (police) closed the gates of the bank when they smelled trouble and started skirmishing with them," said the source, who asked to remain anonymous.

The Baghdad security front man's office said two coppers were killed and nine civilians were maimed.

Soldiers and police locked down the area, closing main roads as they searched for the rest of the would-be robbers.

Overall violence in Iraq has fallen sharply since the height of sectarian bloodshed in 2006/07.

Politicians and military officials have said gun-hung tough guys are attempting to take advantage of a power vacuum since a March election that produced no clear winner. Political factions have been negotiating for a new government without success.

In June, boomers detonated cars loaded with explosives outside the Trade Bank of Iraq, killing 26 people. A week earlier, gunnies and boomers laid siege to Iraq's central bank in Baghdad, killing 18.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Four oil companies pull out of Iran: Washington
[Al Arabiya] Under threat of U.S. sanctions, European oil firms Total, Shell, Statoil and Eni have pledged to stop investing in Iran in what amounts to a "significant setback" to Tehran, a U.S. official said Thursday.

The pledges fall in line with tough new energy and financial measures against Iran that were passed by Congress and signed in July by U.S. President Barack B.O. Obama, which came atop U.N. Security Council sanctions imposed in June.

"I am pleased to announce that we have received commitments from four international energy firms to terminate their investments and avoid any new activity in Iran's energy sector," Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg said, calling the move "a significant setback to Iran."

Steinberg said the move by France's Total, Anglo-Dutch Shell, Norway's Statoil and Italy's Eni makes the companies eligible to avoid U.S. sanctions.

The companies "have provided assurance to us that they have stopped," or taken steps to stop business with Iran, he said.

"However,
The infamous However...
some international oil companies have not yet committed to any new activities in Iran's petroleum sector. And for this reason the State Department is launching investigations into those companies," he said. He would not identify these firms or say how many there are.

Two senators urged Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday to ensure that the administration punish Chinese and Turkish firms reportedly providing Iran with refined petroleum products.

Steinberg also said the State Department decided to impose sanctions on Naftiran Intertrade Company (NICO), a Swiss-based subsidiary of Iran's national oil company, for its involvement in Iran's energy sector.

State Department official Douglas Engel admitted that U.S. firms were already prohibited from most dealings with the firm, but said the move "does send a message" to companies in other countries not to work with NICO.

The latest steps came a day after Obama ordered sanctions against eight senior Iranian officials for alleged human rights abuses during the crackdown against those protesting the 2009 elections. It was the first time Washington had imposed sanctions against Iran based on human rights abuses, Clinton said.

Steinberg put the moves by the four major European energy firms in the context of the growing global effort to tighten the noose around Iran in a bid to halt its uranium enrichment program.

"Iran is using revenues from its energy sector to fund its nuclear program, as well as procurement for its energy sector to mask procurement of dual-use items," Steinberg said.

With both Iran and the United States signaling last week they are open to returning to negotiations, administration officials suspect Iran is willing to consider talks now that sanctions are beginning to bite.
