#2  Does "Strategic Hamlets" ring a bell?

The Strategic Hamlet Program, along with its predecessor, the Rural Community Development Program, played an important role in the shaping of events in South Vietnam during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Both of these programs attempted to separate rural peasants from Communist insurgents by creating "fortified villages". The program backfired drastically and ultimately led to a decrease in support for Diem’s regime and an increase in sympathy for Communist efforts.

Rocket kills 8 children in Afghanistan
[Iran Press TV] Eight children have lost their lives after the rocket round they were playing with exploded in the northern Afghan province of Konduz.

The incident happened in Ali Abad district of Konduz. Seven of the children were killed on the spot and another one died on the way to hospital.

It is not known whether the rocket was fired by militants or US led foreign forces.

There are vast minefields left in the country since the Soviet invasion three decades ago. Unexploded mines have left thousands of Afghans dead and incapacitated over the years.

Rights groups say children are the biggest victims of the war in Afghanistan.

The incident comes one day after a US airstrike reportedly left 70 people dead in southeastern Afghan province of Paktia.
Tell us, O Iran PressTV reporter, were most of those seventy dead civilian shields, or all jihadis? We know how careful American airstrikes are, quite unlike the mines that litter the Afghan landscape or the jihadi rockets sent up barely aimed. and so we think it unlikely the dead were only random children.
Since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, a considerable number of civilians have lost their lives in US-led air and ground operations.

The loss of civilian lives at the hand of foreign forces has dramatically increased anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan, causing thousands of Afghans to protest against US-led military presence in the country.

Despite denials, Iran did kidnap 5 US troops on Afghan soil
Notwithstanding Pentagon and Tehran's denials that seven US troops were detained by Iranian border guards, DEBKAfile's military and Iranian sources report that Iran did in fact kidnap 5 US soldiers in Afghanistan nearly a week ago. Tehran denied its own semi-official Fars agency report in the face of a furious reaction from associates of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who said it was leaked deliberately as the president was on his way to New York for the UN General Assembly.

According to our sources, the five US troops were waylaid by Iranian Revolutionary Guardsmen who dragged them from Afghanistan across the border into Iran and are holding them prisoner. It happened so fast that the soldiers had no time to draw their weapons in self-defence. It is believed they were either not expecting Iranian gunmen on the Afghan side of the border, or else the assailants were disguised in Afghan army uniforms. The Saravan district where it took place is mountainous and convenient for ambush operations.

In the past week, Iranian air patrols, taking off from the Birjand airfield, have intensified their patrols over the Iranian border district with Afghanistan to prevent American over-flights.

In its initial report, DEBKAfile's Iranian sources nonetheless confirmed the incident took place in Sistan-Baluchestan, the southeastern Iranian province bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan. Two Iranians accompanying the troops were also arrested, said Fars.

There were conflicting reports Saturday about a clash involving Jundallah operatives and an alleged attempt to abduct Iranian Guards men. The Baluchi organization claimed six Iranians were seized in the southeast, while Iranian sources in Tehran and Baluchestan said that five Iranian troops were kidnapped and released in a battle in which one Iranian soldier and three kidnappers were killed. The next day, Tehran reported - then denied - detaining 7 American soldiers, followed by the Pentagon.
Here is a Reuters report of IranPressTV's denial of the kidnapping report issued by Iran's Fars news agency. Definitely crossed wires in Iran these days. Hopefully that's a good sign for the rest of the world... and an indication that the kidnap attempt was unsuccessful.

Arabia
Shiite-Sunni tensions threaten to destabilize Kuwait
[Al Arabiya] The Gulf state of Kuwait on Sunday banned public gatherings in a bid to contain rising tensions between Sunni and Shiite Mohammedans over inflammatory remarks by a Shiite activist in self-imposed exile.

"This is a (sectarian) rift and it must be stopped," head of the legal department at the interior ministry Brigadier Asaad al-Ruwayeh told a press conference as he read an official statement banning gatherings.

Any public gathering, procession or demonstration cannot be held without a prior approval from authorities, the statement said.

Ruwayeh said violators could face a two-year jail term, adding that the interior ministry is taking such measures to "safeguard security and stability of the country."

The government decision came as several Sunni Islamist groups announced they were holding public gatherings to press for the extradition of the Kuwaiti activist.

Sectarian tensions in this predominantly Sunni Gulf state flared after Yasser al-Habeeb, a Shiite who has been living in London since 2004, made disparaging remarks against the Prophet Mohammed's wife, Aisha.

Habeeb, who fled Kuwait to escape two 10-year prison terms for abusive remarks about Islam's first two caliphs, held a ceremony to celebrate the death anniversary of Aisha at his London office more than two weeks ago at which he made the remarks, according to video on his website.
Seriously? The country might fall because of something some idiot with a death wish said on the other side of the world? That the Ummah has not yet completely fallen into mutual murder is a wonderment. Truly these are skinless people in a sandpaper world.
The comments sparked a wave of condemnation by Sunni Islamists who urged the government to seek Habeeb's extradition or withdraw his citizenship, while Shiite MPs also called for similar action against Sunni muscle critical of Shiism.

A number of Sunni Islamist MPs threatened they would grill either the prime minister or the interior minister if the government failed to take action.

Shiites make up about one-third of the Kuwaiti population of 1.1 million people. They have nine members in the 50-seat parliament and two members in the emirate's 16-member cabinet.
Kuwait, Bahrain, Yemen... where else have Muslim sects turned to murdering one another as if it were the most important job in the universe?

Yemeni forces kill 3 al-Qaeda suspects
[Iran Press TV] Yemeni Security forces have killed three suspected al-Qaeda members during sweeping operations in the Shabwa province, east of Yemen.

"Three al-Qaeda suspects were killed and others maimed in clashes with the Yemeni anti-terrorism forces in al-Huta district, eastern Yemen," the state-run al-motamar website quoted Shabwa governor, Ali al-Ahmadi, as saying on Sunday.

He added that security forces are imposing a blockade on al-Qaeda cells which had hided at a village in al-Huta.

Al-Ahmdi stated that a Yemeni soldier was also maimed in the confrontation.

Yemen nabs 5 for al-Qaeda ties
[Iran Press TV] Yemeni security forces have jugged five people accused of harboring suspected al-Qaeda faceless myrmidons during sweep operations in Abyan province in the south of Yemen.

The raid took place on Saturday night in the town of Lawder -- 250 km (155 miles) southeast of the capital, Sana'a -- where government troops have been battling al-Qaeda elements for weeks, the state-run Sep26.net website reported.

Yemeni troops are combing Lawdar and the surrounding areas in search of the remaining al-Qaeda elements who have fled the city. The Yemeni Interior Ministry has announced that terrorist elements are being tracked down round the clock and exposed to attacks wherever they appear.

The Yemeni government is struggling with an al-Qaeda presence in the south. Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the Yemeni branch of al-Qaeda, is tied to several terrorist plots in the United States, including a failed Christmas Day attack on a Detroit-bound airliner.

The 23-year-old Nigerian suspect, identified as Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, claimed to have received training and instructions from al-Qaeda operatives in Yemen.

The corruption in South America will stop, all the trafficking and associated human trafficking will end, it will be a miracle! So will we allow out youth to get just pot, or should we allow the crystal meth crossing over, how about the Cocain? And don't forget the Heroin! For Christs sake, this make it legal and it will go away is a crock of shit! Just like if we hug the muzzies and Koran the will stop trying to kill us. The Drug lords have taken over the countries and enslaved the people. By legalizing it they will become the dictators of the future.

#8  Don't let's forget that a share of the cocaine profits go directly into Hizb'allah and Al Qaeda coffers, whereas a significant cut of the Heroin and Hashish profits go directly into Taliban coffers. 5 soldiers killed in Tajikistan ambush
[Pak Daily Times] Unidentified men opened fire on a column of troops in Tajikistan on Sunday, killing at least five servicemen, a government source told Rooters. The troops had gone to reinforce roadblocks in the north of the Mohammedan country, which shares a border with Afghanistan, a month after prisoners including organisers of an alleged coup plot beat feet from a detention centre in the capital Dushanbe.

"(They were there) in case runaways appeared," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

At least five troops were killed in the attack in the Rasht region near Tajikistan's border with Kyrgyzstan. Sources within the security services have told Rooters the beat feet prisoners included citizens of Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Russia. Many were sentenced in August on accusations of organising a coup in the impoverished former Soviet republic.

Tajikistan, which shares a porous 1,340-km (840-mile) border with Afghanistan, is battling growing radicalism. This year alone it has imprisoned more than 100 members of banned groups including 36 members of Hizb ut-Tahrir and 25 members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. Last week Tajikistan said it had killed at least 20 Taliban fighters and lost one officer in a clash on the Afghan border.

Europe
ETA offers peace to Spanish govt.
[Iran Press TV] Spain's armed Basque separatist group ETA has offered to resolve its conflicts with the Spanish government through democratic means, a local newspaper says.

"Faced with the stubbornness of France and Spain, ETA has decided again to launch the boat of opportunity for the democratic resolution of the conflict," ETA said according to an excerpt published by the Basque daily Gara on Saturday.
Perhaps it's at translation error, or I'm lacking critical context. I have no idea what the above statement means.
For a second, I thought they were talking about the situation with Senator Kerry's yacht.
I think it translates (loosely) as, "Please don't kill us!"
The newspaper said the statement, which is addressed to the international community, shows an unconditional and unilateral move by ETA, AFP reported on Sunday.

The peace offering comes two weeks after Spain rejected the declaration of a ceasefire by the ETA, saying the group should abandon violence forever.

In the statement, which is due to be published completely on Sunday, ETA called on the international community to take part in the process to achieve a "permanent, just and democratic" solution to the conflict.

ETA, however, insists that the key to the solution lies in the autonomy of Basque as a country, Gara said.
Oh. It means they will give up the violent fight for an independent Basque nation if Spain now gives them an independent Basque nation. That seems unlikely to me, but I'm admittedly simple about such things.
The group has been blamed for more than 820 deaths during a four-decade campaign for an independent Basque state in northeastern Spain and southwestern France.

Dutch arrest alleged UK terror suspect at airport
[Bangla Daily Star] Dutch police yesterday arrested a British man of Somali ancestry at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport for possible links to a terrorist group, a spokesman for the Dutch prosecutors said.
Well done, all!
The man was arrested after flying in from Liverpool, England, and before he flew out to Uganda, prosecutors' spokesman Evert Boersma said, without specifying what terror group was involved. "He was arrested on the tip-off from British authorities," Boersma told The Associated Press.

Scotland Yard and airport officials in Britain did not immediately comment on the arrest. A spokeswoman for Liverpool's police force said she had no information on the arrest.

Amsterdam's airport has significantly beefed up its security measures since last December, after it was a departure point for a Nigerian student, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who allegedly tried to blow up a plane above the United States on Christmas Day, by setting off explosives hidden in his underwear.

He was tackled by passangers and crew, and is now charged in U.S. federal court in Detroit with attempting to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253 with 278 passengers and 11 crew members aboard. Abdulmutallab is representing himself, but a judge has appointed a standy lawyer to assist him.

Gunman opens fire at Fort Bliss in Texas
A GUNMAN shot and injured two people at Fort Bliss early this morning before being killed by law enforcement at the Texas army post, officials confirmed.

Col. Joe Simonelli, Garrison Commander at the post said reports of shots fired were received around 3pm yesterday local time (Today 7am AEST). Law enforcement officials responded and killed the individual believed to be the shooter.

The extent of the victims' injuries was not immediately known, nor was the motive of the shooter.

The identities of the victims were not released.

KDBC-TV in El Paso, Texas reported the incident was a murder-suicide. Witnesses told the station the shots were fired in a Burger King at Fort Bliss.

Earlier reports indicated the incident took place at a convenience store on base called Shopette. The area was sealed off and the gates to the post were closed following the incident.

Sigh, every "convenience store" on Army posts and Air Force bases are called the Shopette. They are run by AAFES. Likely the Burger King was in the same mini-mall.

#2  From McClatchy today on how the Army is broken after the draw down from Iraq (posting only the part about Ft. Bliss):

"Nearly 70 soldiers in his 1,163-member battalion had tested positive for drugs: methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana. Others were abusing prescription drugs. Troops were passing around a tape of a female lieutenant having sex with five soldiers from the unit. Seven soldiers in the brigade died from drug overdoses and traffic accidents when they returned to Fort Bliss, near El Paso, after their first deployment.

"The inmates were running the prison," Wilson said.

What Wilson had to deal with, however, was hardly an isolated instance.

With the U.S. drawdown in Iraq, the Army is finally confronting an epidemic of drug abuse and criminal behavior that many commanders acknowledge has been made worse because they'd largely ignored it during nearly a decade of wars on two fronts.

The Army concedes that it faces a mammoth problem."

US requested to hand over Aafia
[Dawn] Interior Minister Rehman Malik sent a letter on Saturday to the United States Attorney General calling for repatriation of Dr Aafia Siddiqui to Pakistain.
No.
Hell no.
He said as the case of Dr Aafia Siddiqui had become a matter of public concern in Pakistain, her repatriation would create goodwill for the US.
All the money and arms we give you every year creates as much Pakistani good will as we are able to handle. So sorry.
Mr Malik said there was also a humanitarian side to the episode as two of her children were living in uncertainty. "The old mother of Dr Siddiqui is suffering from depression," the letter said.
There are always trade-offs when a woman has both children and a career, whether or not a paycheck is involved. Perhaps Dr. Siddiqui should have chosen a career less likely to end in her death or permanent imprisonment far from home.
The minister further stated that Dr Aafia Siddiqui could be deported to Pakistain under the UN Convention on prisoners. "I would appreciate if you personally look into the matter and use your good office for helping in the repatriation of Dr Siddiqui to Pakistain."

He added that there were over 90 precedents in the legal history of the US where cases against such individuals were dropped on humanitarian grounds.
I can't imagine a single one of those cases involved a career terrorist, though.

Three more protesters die in Kashmir
[Dawn] Three more protesters died on Sunday in Indian-administered Kashmir as violence against rule from New Delhi deepened, according to police.

The protesters died in two separate hospitals Sunday after being injured on Saturday and last week in clashes with Indian security forces in three different districts of the valley, a police spokesman said.

Government forces have been battling months of violent demonstrations in the mainly Muslim region that were ignited by the police killing of a 17-year-old student on June 11.

A total of 105 protesters and bystanders --including children --have been killed, mostly by security forces firing on demonstrators after being pelted with stones. One policeman has also died.
What kind of idiot parent allows children near a riot? What kind of idiot rioters pelt armed police with stones?
On Saturday, police and paramilitary forces fired on fresh anti-India demonstrations in Kashmir, killing three protesters and injuring over a dozen.

Fifteen police and paramilitary forces were also injured during day-long clashes in the valley.

Authorities briefly relaxed the strict curfew on Saturday in most parts of Kashmir to allow locals to stock up on food and medicine.

Clashes erupted between Indian police and protesters at three places, police said, but no casualties were reported.

On Sunday, police sealed neighbourhoods with barbed wires and asked residents to stay indoors. "Anyone violating the curfew will be dealt with sternly," roared announcements made by loud-speaker fitted police vehicles in Srinagar.

Scores of people at Srinagar's main hospital pleaded with security forces to be allowed to go to their homes to bring medicines and water for the patients but their pleas were ignored.

Locals living near the hospitals have been distributing free food among the attendants, while patients continue to get food from the hospital. But there are no life-saving medicines and drinking water.

Gunmen in Delhi attack tourists near mosque
[Al Arabiya] Gunmen on cycle of violences shot at a tourist bus near the main mosque in the Indian capital on Sunday, wounding two Taiwanese visitors in an attack only weeks before the city hosts the Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games is seen as a showcase event for India as it emerges onto the global economic and diplomatic stage. Some hard boy groups have threatened to disrupt the Games.

"The two men were wearing helmets and raincoats. They fired indiscriminately at a tourist bus before escaping," K. Singh, a senior police officer in Delhi, told Rooters.

Security has been tightened in the capital ahead of the Games, with authorities mindful of hard boy attacks in Indian cities over recent years in which dozens have been killed.

Police would not confirm whether Orcs and similar vermin were behind the attack near the historic mosque, one of the most popular tourist sites in the capital.

The condition of the two maimed tourists was not immediately known. The foreigners were Taiwanese, police said.

"There was some firing outside gate number 3 of Jama Masjid (Delhi's main mosque)," Delhi police front man Rajan Bhagat told Rooters. "We can't say (whether it was a hard boy attack)."

There have been some hard boy attacks in India this year.

In February, a powerful blast ripped through a restaurant in the western city of Pune, killing 17 people. India has blamed the Indian Mujahideen, a homegrown hard boy group with links to Orcs and similar vermin in Pakistain, for the Pune attack.

US drone attack kills four in Pakistan
[Iran Press TV] A US dronezap has waxed at least four snuffies and maimed several others in the troubled northwestern tribal belt in Pakistain.
Other reports put the corpse count at five...
According to Pak security officials, the drone fired two missiles at a turbanmobile in the North Wazoo region on Sunday.

"It was a US dronezap. Four snuffies were ejected from the gene pool. The vehicle was hit by two missiles," a regional security official said.

The US frequently carries out such attacks on Pakistain's tribal areas. Attacks by drones have left dozens of terrorists and camp followers people titzup in the volatile region over the past weeks.

The aerial attacks, initiated by former US President George W. Bush, have been escalated under President Barack B.O. Obama.

The New York Times recently ran a report, saying the US government has ordered the CIA to step up air attacks in Pakistain.
Once again someone blabbed to the NYT who in turn couldn't resist publishing something that would harm national security. It's like a drug habit for them ...
Washington claims the strikes target turbans, but camp followers civilians often bear the brunt of the attacks. Islamabad has frequently slammed the US over the drone strikes, saying they violate its sovereignty.
If Pakistan would fix the problem, we wouldn't have to. This isn't rocket science, you know -- quite unlike the drones and the missiles they strike with, which are.

According to sources, at least 138 people had been killed and 180 injured in clashes over water dispute for the last 16 days in the Shalozan area of Upper Kurram Agency.

Iraq
Twin Baghdad car bombs kill 31, wound dozens
[Al Arabiya] Two near-simultaneous car bombs rocked the Iraqi capital on Sunday, killing at least 31people and wounding at least 80 in the city's deadliest day in a month.

A pair of car bombs tore through two different Storied Baghdad neighborhoods Sunday, killing at least 31 people and breaking what has been a period of relative calm since the end of the Mohammedan holy month of Ramadan.

The blasts were the worst to strike the Iraqi capital since the U.S. declared a formal end to combat operations. The violence underlines the challenges Iraqi security officials face trying to stabilize Baghdad as U.S. forces drawdown and Iraq's police and military assume responsibility for protecting the capital.

Sunday's deadliest attack took place in north Baghdad's Kazimiyah neighborhood when a car bomb detonated near Adan square, killing at least 21 people and wounding more than 70, police and hospital officials said.

Minutes earlier, at least 10 people were killed in another car bombing in western Baghdad's affluent Mansour neighborhood, said Army Brig. Gen. Ali Fadhal, who is responsible for the western half of the city. Another 10 people were maimed in the attack.

Fadhal said security officials were investigating whether the blast was the work of a suicide kaboomer in a car targeting a crowded commercial area near an AsiaCell store, one of Iraq's biggest mobile phone providers.

The blast sheered off large sections of the concrete walls from the surrounding buildings, and chunks of rubble were strewn around the street. Dozens of Iraqi army and police officers cordoned off the area, keeping journalists at bay.

An eyewitness working in an office near the blast site said he heard a huge kaboom that shattered windows in his office and brought a section of the ceiling down on one customer.

"Dust and black smoke covered the area and I thought that the car bomb exploded near our office," said the man, who identified himself as Abu Haidar. He said he saw a lot of maimed people on the street and helped evacuate a child who had shrapnel wounds in his back.

Thai terrorists kill four and burn down their houses
Terrorists Insurgents broke into the houses of Buddhists in the province of Narathiwat, gunning down four of them and setting their houses on fire.

Ten jihadis militants in fatigues broke into three houses in the village of Hutaeyuloh before opening fire with their M16s on the occupants. The terrorists insurgents then set fire to their homes and fled in a pick-up truck and two motorcycles.

The houses are the last three Buddhists' residences settled in this Muslim community, so the police assume that it was the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) militants' attempt to drive Buddhists out of the area.

Hizbullah Gunmen Escort Sayyed from Airport Runway in Move Described as 'Invasion' of the Facility
[An Nahar] Vehicles with Hizbullah gunnies inside have reportedly welcomed former General Security Department chief Maj. Gen. Jamil Sayyed at a tarmac at Beirut airport and took him to the VIP lounge that he used without a previous permit from the foreign ministry, in what was described as "an invasion of the airport."

An Nahar newspaper said Sunday that following a press conference at the lounge during which he unleashed his rage on several officials, Hizbullah took private security measures to escort Sayyed to his home in Beirut's Jnah neighborhood.

According to the daily, no one asked the foreign ministry to open the lounge which is usually earmarked for cabinet ministers, MPs and high-level state employees if they were tasked with carrying out missions abroad.

Head of Hizbullah's Security and Liaison Committee, Wafiq Safa, and his bodyguards were inside one of the vehicles which took Sayyed from the runway to the VIP lounge and then to this home, An Nahar said.

Sayyed arrived in Beirut from Paris on Saturday afternoon. During his press conference at the lounge, the former security chief launched a vehement attack against Prime Minister Saad Hariri, State Prosecutor Saeed Mirza, Police Chief Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi and Detlev Mehlis, former head of the U.N. investigation into the assassination of ex-PM Rafik Hariri.
