#1  For those with an interest in this sort of thing:

For the curious among us:

The M777 began as the Ultralight-weight Field Howitzer (UFH), developed by VSEL's armaments division in Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom. In 1999, after acquisition by BAE, VSEL was merged into the new BAE Systems RO Defence. This unit became part of BAE Systems Land Systems in 2004. Although developed by a British company, final assembly is in the US. BAE System's original US partner was United Defense. However in 2005, BAE acquired United Defense and hence is responsible for design, construction and assembly (through its US-based Land and Armaments group). The M777 uses about 70% US built parts including the gun barrel manufactured at the Watervliet Arsenal.

The M777 is smaller and 42% lighter, at under 4,100 kg (9,000 lb), than the M198 it replaces. Most of the weight reduction is due to the use of titanium. The lighter weight and smaller size allows the M777 to be transported by USMC MV-22 Osprey, CH-47 helicopter or truck with ease, so that it can be moved in and out of the battlefield more quickly than the M198. The smaller size also improves storage and transport efficiency in military warehouses and Air/Naval Transport. The gun crew required is an Operational Minimum of five, compared to a previous size of nine.[1]

The M777 uses a digital fire-control system similar to that found on self propelled howitzers such as the M109A6 Paladin to provide navigation, pointing and self-location, allowing it to be put into action more quickly than earlier towed and air-transported howitzers. The Canadian M777 in conjunction with the traditional "glass and iron sights/mounts" also uses a digital fire control system called Digital Gun Management System (DGMS) produced by SELEX. This system has been proven on the British Army Artillery's L118 Light Gun over the past three to four years.

The M777 is also often combined with the new Excalibur GPS-guided munition, which allows accurate fire at a range of up to 40 km. This almost doubles the area covered by a single battery to about 5,000 km2. Testing at the Yuma Proving Ground by the US Army placed 13 of 14 Excalibur rounds, fired from up to 24 km away, within 10 meters of their target,[2] suggesting a circular error probable of about 5 meters.

Quite similar to the aging G5, it would make Gerald Bull quite proud may he rest in peace.

Insurgents launch 6 missiles at Ghazni
Turbans launched 6 missiles on the southern Ghazni city Monday dawn, in which an Afghan police was maimed, local officials say

The missiles targeted the governor's office, the city's municipality building, the Peace Building Commission's office and a park in Ghazni city, the provincial capital of the southern Ghazni province, local officials said.

"Six missiles hit different locations in Ghazni city, in which a police officer was killed," Zorawar Zahid, the Police Chief of Ghazni told TOLOnews.

No one is jugged in connection to the incident so far, he added.

Local officials claim that Taliban faceless myrmidons are increasing efforts to deteriorate security conditions in the province to prevent the holding of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, the head of the Afghan Independent Election Commission (IEC), in his trip to the province on Sunday had voiced concern over a surge in insecurity in the province.

Head of the IEC, Fazel Ahmad Manawi, had earlier said that almost 1,000 polling centres will be closed due to the increasing insurgency in the country.

Violence has increased in the province in the past one month, and the Afghan and coalition forces have escalated their counter-insurgency operations in the province, in which Taliban have suffered heavy casualties.

MPs slain as Somali gunmen storm hotel
Somali gunnies have stormed a Mogadishu hotel and killed 15 parliamentarians inside, in the latest violence that has killed dozens more, authorities say.

"They have slaughtered 15 MPs. We are surrounding the hotel area. We want to catch them and our troops are there," legislator Mohamed Hasan said.

A hotel worker who fled the building said one of the attackers was a boomer and had blown himself up. Eyewitnesses later said the gunfire had ended and police had entered the hotel.

Fighting earlier claimed the lives of 29 civilians in the capital after Al Qaeda-inspired Boskonians launched an offensive the government said was a declaration of war on the Somali people. The government also said it had killed more than 15 Boskonians belonging to Al Shabaab in the worst clashes since July 11, when suicide kabooms in Kampala escalated the conflict.

The fighting broke out on Monday afternoon (local time) when Al Shabaab fighters launched an offensive on army barracks in several districts of Mogadishu. The battle resumed the next morning after an overnight lull.

"The corpse count increased from 11 to 29 civilians since yesterday," Ali Muse, head of Mogadishu ambulance services, said. "Our medical teams have also collected 98 injured from a number of neighbourhoods."

Colonel Mohamed Omar, a Somali government security officer, said government forces were fighting back.

"Government forces are inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy," he said. We killed more than 15 of their fighters," he added, without specifying whether the fighting had caused any casualties among his own ranks.

Civilians in the seaside Somali capital routinely get caught in the crossfire when government forces, backed by Burundian and Ugandan African Union forces, trade mortar and artillery rounds with the Boskonians.
'Seaside' makes it sound like a nice place to holiday, if it weren't for the artillery fire, boomers and a few other minor annoyances.

Ugandan Rebel Forces Recruit, Murder in South Sudan
[Gulf Times] When the dreadlocked gunnies burst out of the jungle at night firing AK-47 assault rifles, the men of the scenic village took up bows and arrows to defend their families.

But the brave defence was futile. The rebels from the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) simply shot the men and dragged off others into the forest to join their force.

"Two of us were killed, and three more maimed," said Vanetta Tamenda, who fled as the rebels began their work, torching his small farming scenic village of Basukangbi, on south Sudan's remote border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The scenic village's simple defence force—calling themselves the Arrow Boys—were swiftly overrun.

"They are too strong," Tamenda said, pulling up a ripped shirt to show bullet wounds in his shoulder and back. "We need guns to defend ourselves."

Tens of thousands of people have been killed in two decades of fighting since LRA chief Joseph Kony took up arms—initially against the Ugandan government.

Driven out of Uganda, the guerillas have carved out a vast region of control in the dense forests of northeastern DR Congo, south Sudan and the Central African Republic (CAR).

The jungle allows easy movement across porous borders for the rebels, who abandoned faltering peace talks in 2008.

Their acts of startling brutality have forced more than 25,000 people to flee their homes in south Sudan since January, according to the UN.

"The attacks this year by the LRA seem to be on the increase," said Sapana Abuyi, deputy governor of Western Equatoria, the state in south Sudan hardest hit by the rebels.

"Not a week goes by without us receiving a message they have attacked a scenic village."

They call the rebels here the "tong-tong" - or "chop-chop" - named after the machete attacks on their victims when they wish to save a bullet.

Its top leaders, wanted by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, are accused of massacres, mutilation, forcibly enlisting boys as child soldiers, and taking girls as sex slaves.

Several hundred of those who most recently fled have gathered in the small settlement of Nzara, searching for security, shelter, food and medication.

"People left so quickly they could take little," said Daniel James Banjen, chief of the Sangwa area, which was attacked in early August.

"Some of us are staying with families, others under plastic sheeting, and all of us are living off the food that we are given."

The people here say an upsurge in attacks is linked to the ripe harvests currently in the fields.

"They leave us alone while we cultivate," said Terezina Mathew as a child clutched her skirt. "But when the crops are good they come, forcing us away so they can take all our food."

Africa Subsaharan
Rebels Gang Rape 179 Women in Eastern Congo
An aid worker says rebels in eastern Congo gang-raped nearly 200 women over four days within miles of a UN peacekeepers' base.

Will F Cragin of the International Medical Corps says aid workers knew rebels had occupied Luvungi town the day after the attack began on July 30.

More than three weeks later the UN mission says it still is investigating.

Cragin told The Associated Press today by telephone that his organisation was only able to go into the town that is 10 miles (16 kilometres) from a UN military camp after rebels withdrew voluntarily on Aug 4.

He said international and local health workers have treated 179 women but that the number raped could be much higher. Cragin said his aid group has been going back to the town and identifying more cases.

#5  This article is missing some additional victims of the gang rape. About half of all reports on this incident include mention of the rape of four baby boys in addition to the women.

Four young boys also were raped, said Dr. Kasimbo Charles Kacha, the district medical chief. Masudi said they were babies aged one month, six months, a year and 18 months.

Houthi Rebels Kill Six Women, 11 Children, Say Yemeni Defence Ministry
[Yemen Post] The Defense Ministry on Saturday accused Houthi rebels of killing six women and 11 children following the fail of an unstable truce between the Yemen's army and Houthis.

The 26 septemper.net quoted a local official in Sa'ada, as saying that Houthis "raided several villages in the province and shot the women and children to death allegedly for cooperating with the Yemen's army.

Fighter jets resumed air strikes on Houthis positions in several areas in Sa'ada on Saturday, according to local sources.

Authorities lay blame on Houthis of seeking to restore the rule of the Zaydi majestic family, who were toppled by a revolution in 1962.

Seven Die, More Wounded in Tribal Clashes
[Yemen Post] Seven people were killed including a university student and several others injured in renewed clashes between Al-Jameemah village of Hajah province and Sueer of Amran province in north of Yemen, local sources told the Yemen Post.

The clashes started on Friday and are still continuing until Saturday evening, according to the same sources. Information about the death toll of today's clashes is still unknown.

Locals from Amran province urged the Yemen's authorities to intervene to stop the fighting between the two sides, something they say once the government has not intervened they would respond to the aggressions of Hajah tribe.

To solve these conflicts effectively requires an ability to understand Yemen's law and an awareness and respect for the cultural and inter-generational divides that characterize the disputes, according to lawyer Mohammed Naji Allaw, Chairman of the National Organization for Defending Rights and Freedoms (HOOD).

He said that those disputes are special because their cultural, social, and historical components often play singularly important roles, with roots that extend back many decades.

Bomb kills seven at tribal elders' meeting in Kurram
[Pak Daily Times] A bomb blast at a meeting of tribal elders in Kurram Agency on Monday killed seven people. "Seven people have been killed in a landmine blast," said area administrator Syed Musaddiq Shah. He said the blast took place in Khumas village about 10 kilometres east of Parachinar. He said it was unclear whether the blast was an intended attack or whether the ordinance had exploded accidentally. Another administration official said seven people were injured in the blast, which occurred during a jirga between two tribes. The tribesmen were gathered to resolve a dispute over ownership of a school building. Kurram has for three years been a flashpoint for violence between Shia and Sunni Muslims. More than 4,000 people have died in outbreaks of sectarian violence between the groups since the late 1980s. The army earlier carried out a months-long operation in the area, pounding militant hideouts with jets and helicopter gunships.
