Afghan police arrested five would-be suicide bombers in Kabul on Thursday, the largest suicide team ever apprehended in the capital, officials said. "If this team had made it through it would have been a disaster as we've seen in past instances," said Abdul Ghafar, deputy commander of the Afghan National Police crisis unit.
He said police, acting on intelligence, stopped the suicide bombers as they were traveling in an SUV in the southeastern part of the city. He said the bomb team had been sent by the al-Qaida-linked Haqqani network.
"Today's operation marks a big success," Ghafar said. "Our capacities are improving day by day and also our ability to uncover such plots is improving day by day."
Such attacks are a hallmark of the Haqqani network, an Afghan Taliban faction whose leader was once a U.S. ally. The group is considered a serious threat to American and NATO troops in Afghanistan's east and operates on both sides of the border with Pakistan.
Ghafar said the nationalities and exact identities of the five men had yet to be determined. He said their targets were crowded parts of downtown Kabul where they could cause the most carnage, but gave no specifics.
The five were displayed before journalists at a heavily guarded police base on the city's outskirts, along with their vehicle and bags containing explosive material and suicide harnesses. All appeared to be young men and wore traditional Afghan tunics and trousers. They stood with their backs to the journalists, their eyes covered by blindfolds and hoods and their wrists in handcuffs, before being led off by police for further questioning.
Ghafar said police are getting better at foiling such plots through a combination of improved intelligence and better training. "I would call this a major blow to the terrorists," he said.
Despite Thursday's success, a number of suicide bombers have made it into the capital in recent months, including a team that targeted government buildings in Jan. 18, leaving 12 dead, and a car bomber who struck near a hotel frequented by Westerners on Dec. 15, killing eight people. In the worst such attack, a suicide car bomb detonated at the gates of the Indian Embassy on July 7, 2008, killing more than 60 people.

The Afghan Ministry of Interior says the explosion early Wednesday appeared to have targeted a NATO convoy passing through the city's main intersection.
It says the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber and damaged one of the military vehicles and several nearby shops.
Local officials have said that no foreign troops have been harmed in the explosion.
The attack comes two days after the killing of nearly a dozen Taliban fighters a NATO-led air strike in Khogyani district of the province.
NATO commanders have predicted a bloody year ahead, calling it a decisive period to drive Taliban militants out of their strongholds across the country.

The U.S. air base in Kyrgyzstan was temporarily closed on Wednesday amid anti-government protests that may have forced the country's president to flee.
A U.S. official confirmed a media report that the airport at Manas, including the U.S. air base, was closed at 8 p.m. local time and would reopen 12 hours later.
Located about 19 miles northwest of the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, the base is a major transportation hub for U.S. troops and supplies going to Afghanistan. The closure will delay some troops headed to Afghanistan, but the U.S. military is looking into other ways to get them there, a Defense Department official said.
Meanwhile, steps have been taken to ensure the safety of the personnel stationed at Manas, according to the Air Force.
"Due to operational security reasons we will not discuss specific details about protection of our personnel and assets," said Maj. Rickardo Bodden, a spokesman for the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing.

[Al Arabiya Latest] The European Union said on Wednesday it was withdrawing its election observers from Sudan's Darfur region, saying safety fears were hindering their work. "I have decided to go back with all the team of six observers that were still in Darfur," EU head of mission Veronique de Keyser told reporters on the plane. "We've seen this show before. We just can't bear to watch."
"It's always sad to leave this region which is such a poor region but I really knew when I came that to observe elections here, it's impossible in a credible way," she said. "There are many safety limitations."
The pullout has put the credibility of Sudan's election further into doubt after a main opposition party widened its boycott of the vote.
Sudan is days away from what should be its first multi-party presidential, legislative and gubernatorial elections in 24 years, but opposition parties have said the polls in Darfur will be a farce while a seven-year conflict continues in the region.
The vote is a prelude to a referendum on southern independence scheduled for January 2011.
The former southern rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement said late on Tuesday it was extending its boycott to include the northern states in Sudan including Darfur.
But it said it would still field candidates in the sensitive border states of Blue Nile and South Kordofan, where the party enjoys support.
Pagan Amum, the SPLM secretary general, lashed out at President Omar Hassan al-Bashir's National Congress Party, accusing it of intimidation.
"The NCP continues to issue threats to observers and you can imagine if they are threatening observers to cut their limbs and noses, what will happen to Sudanese people," he said, in reference to statements Bashir had made.

Mandar, son of Abzal Mondol of Khordobakhail village in Kushtia sadar upazila, got involved with Gono Bahini through his uncle Azibor in 1996.
Ah. A nice little family business.
He first killed Hobi and Kasem, cadres of his rival party Gono Mukti Fouz, at Lasmipur bus stand on June 18, 2000.
After that, he went on a killing spree in Kushtia, Chuadanga and Jhenidah. On August 1, 2000 he killed Khalil Mondol and Labu at his village. On October 22, he killed three of his opponents--Lalon, Kapil and Sariful--in the same village.
Police and Rab said Mandar and his accomplices also killed Raihan, chairman of Jhoudia Union Parishad Abdul Aziz, Nabis Uddin, Chhoto Hasem, Saheb Ali, Mojnu Kha, Hila Kha and Sarwar in between 2000 and 2001.
Mandar abducted Sawpan Kumar Saha, son of Harinaryanpur UP chairman Babu Jugol Kishor Saha in 2001. Sawpan still remains traceless. Mandar also abducted his father Jugol Kishore who is also still missing.
A police source said Mandar was involved in around 50 abductions for ransom during 1996-2008.
He abducted two sisters--Hasina and Shilpi--in 1999 and they went missing thereafter.

Bad news, TW. The tent where I was keeping the 1:15,000 map of Bangladesh was blown away last week in a windstorm (55mph gusts). The map is now somewhere in the Texas panhandle, covering 120 acres of sagebrush and scrub pine. It WON'T be replaced.

A Qatari diplomat trying to sneak a smoke in an airplane bathroom sparked a bomb scare Wednesday night on a flight from Washington to Denver, with fighter jets scrambled and law enforcement put on high alert, officials said.
No explosives were found on the man, and officials do not believe he was trying to harm anyone, according to a senior law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. Rest at link.

Qatar by the way is a member state of the Arab League, which held its summit last month in Libya.
Libya forced the Swiss embassy to return Swiss citizen and hostage Max Göldi to Libyan custody by threatening to storm that embassy.
According to international law that even the Soviet Union, armed with thousand of nukes respected, the host country's forces may not enter embassy premises without the guest country's permission.
Libya suffered no adverse consequences for this act.
It's funny how international law in practice only affords protection to 'them' but not to 'us.'

One of the last night's topics in the O-Club was how police are treated in places like Mexico, Bahrain and the like, and the attitude taken by their elites when their 'lessers' dare question them.
A man has been detained after he tried to set fire to his shoes on a US flight, reports say. The man was subdued on United flight 663 from Washington Reagan airport to Denver.
While the presence of explosives has not been confirmed, reports are referring to the incident as a "shoe bomb attempt".
An ABC report identified the suspect as a Qatari diplomat stationed at the country's Washington embassy.
The plane, with more than 160 passengers and crew on board, landed safely at Denver International Airport, where TV footage showed it surrounded by security vehicles. The US Transportation Security Administration said the suspect was being interviewed by law enforcement officials.
"TSA is monitoring an incident on board United Airlines flight 663 from [Washington to Denver] after receiving initial reports that a Federal Air Marshal responded to a passenger possibly causing a disturbance on board this aircraft," the agency said in a statement.
The incident comes just months after a Nigerian man allegedly tried to detonate a bomb on a passenger jet arriving in the US. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, was overpowered by passengers and crew shortly before the Northwest Airlines plane landed in Detroit from Amsterdam on 24 December. He has been charged with attempting to destroy a plane.
In 2001, Richard Reid, a British citizen, attempted to blow up a transatlantic passenger jet carrying 197 people with explosives hidden in his shoes.
Conduct a federal law enforcement sweep of right wing militias in northern states as a response.
Someone should give DHS a hint: Misdirection means the enemy, you know, the people actually trying to kill Americans, are confused as to what to do, not us.
Second on the Obamanation agenda: Disarm everyone except federal law enforcement agencies.

FBI agents say no explosives were found in the shoes of a Qatar diplomat who was subdued by federal air marshals on a United flight to Denver Wednesday night after allegedly telling the marshals, "I'm lighting my shoes on fire."
Authorities say the diplomat was wrestled to the ground and two F-16 fighter jets were dispatched to accompany the 757 on the final five minutes of its flight to Denver. Flight 663 originated from Washington Reagan airport.
A US security official said, "it may have been a massive misunderstanding" and the diplomat's statement may have been a "sarcastic" comment when he was confronted by two air marshals who had been told by flight attendants that smoke was coming from the lavatory.

Not mentioned in official reports, but revealed here this morning, a passenger on the flight discloses a previously concealed detail: That a female unsub left the lavatory moments before the Qatari diplomat. In addition, the same passenger overheard the exchange between the Air Marshall and the diplomat and had this to add to media reports:
"I swear to god. His first words to the air marshall, in heavily accented english, were,
'Were we smoking??? I didn't look!' "

Our local TV noon news also summarized this episode as a 'misunderstanding', which is a gross distortion of what happened. It was 4th or 5th down the line of news. The first item was a Sikh with a meat cleaver. The item after this one was, of course, about Lion Cheetah Tiger Woods.
How is it possible that smoke was coming out of the restroom without the restroom's smoke detector screaming an alarm? Was the detector in working condition, or did the smoker 'disable' it? AFAICT, monkeying with airline equipment is a federal offense.
Just the fact that the diplomat was smoking on board a flight (and a short one, at that) should make him persona non grata. Such an action is far less likely than Obama issuing another apology for the existence of the USA and his continuing work to make that less likely in the future.

WASHINGTON A Qatari diplomat who caused a bomb scare after sneaking a smoke in an airplane bathroom was traveling for a consular visit to see an imprisoned al-Qaida agent.
A State Department official and another person close to the matter say Mohammed Al-Madadi was going to meet Ali Al-Marri for an official visit. Consular officials frequently visit foreigners held in the United States to make sure they are being treated well.
The two sources spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Officials say the diplomat will be sent home or transferred to another country for touching off the bomb scare.

The diplomat was on his way to Denver for a consular visit with a jailed Al Qaeda operative -- perhaps adding to the tension with the U.S. government.
The State Department comment came after officials already were calling for Mohammed Al-Madadi to either be recalled or expelled for doing just about "everything wrong" on board the United Airlines flight to Denver late Wednesday.
Al-Madadi was flying back to Washington, D.C., Thursday after being released from custody. He's expected to arrive at Dulles International Airport shortly after 3 p.m. ET and will likely be escorted by federal air marshals.

[The News (Pak) Top Stories] Three volunteers were killed when militants opened fire on them near a checkpoint of the Baizai Amn Committee in the far-off Manzari Cheena village of Mohmand Agency early on Sunday, sources said.
The sources said a group of volunteers were on their way to the checkpoint in Manzari Cheena when the militants attacked them, killing three of them. Two of the slain volunteers were identified as Abdullah and Suhrab. The sources said two militants were also killed and three others injured in the exchange of fire. The bodies of the volunteers were sent to their native towns in Dir district.
Meanwhile, militants blew up another government school in the Bakhmal area of the Baizai subdivision. The sources said the militants had planted explosives in the building of the Government Boys' Primary School, Bakhmal, and triggered the blasts. The structure was completely destroyed in the explosions.
The locals and the forces launched a drive against the militants in Mohmand Agency soon after the first suicide attack was carried out on a security checkpoint in Nahqi area. Three persons, including two security personnel, had been killed in the attack.Though several areas have been purged of the militants, the locals and forces still face clandestine attacks by the militants in the region.

Should have put them through an industrial-strength meat grinder and sprinkle the resulting mash across a wide area of the Indian Ocean. Televise their remains being thrown into the sea. No body, no burial, no virgins. Broadcast to the world that any militant caught in India would receive the same treatment, whether in Kashmir or Assam, or anywhere in between. It would slow down the number of boomer volunteers significantly.

BAGHDAD (AFP) Two US soldiers were killed and five other American troops wounded during combat operations in northern Iraq, the military said on Thursday.
The deaths occurred during a patrol on Wednesday, a US army statement said, adding that the five injured soldiers are being treated in hospital.

[Ma'an] An explosive charge was detonated in front of an Al-Aqsa Brigades member's home in the Tulkarem refugee camp on Wednesday, witnesses said. There were no immediate reports of injury.
Relatives of Husni Abu Zugheib, a member of the Fatah-aligned armed wing, said the home sustained material damage. The culprits also vandalized the walls of the building with slogans denouncing the fighter, they added.
Palestinian Authority police announced that an investigation was opened into the incident, as Fatah officials in the city denounced what they called an attack on Abu Zugheib. "Those suspected of orchistrating this attack must be exposed and punished," a Fatah official said.
An Israeli military patrol raided Tulkarem hours earlier, stopping several Palestinians to check IDs, eyewitnesses said. No clashes or detentions were reported, although residents said they felt threatened and forces were unnecessarily provoking civilians. Patrols were reportedly focused on Shwaika Street, Al-Younis, and Al-Quds Open University areas.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said the army was unaware of the incident. However, Israeli forces are operating in the West Bank to ensure the security of Israel and protect its citizens, she added.

Ghasan Daghlas, a PA official charged with monitoring settlements in the northern West Bank, said residents of the illegal outpost of Rachel, near Yetma, gathered near a road adjacent to the village and began throwing stones at passing vehicles. The official said several cars sustained damage, but no injuries were reported.
An Israeli military spokesman had no immediate comment on that incident, but said the army was aware of three others in which Palestinians threw rocks at Israeli citizens and infrastructure.
One Israeli civilian was lightly injured southeast of Bethlehem when Palestinians threw rocks at a car, the army spokesman said, while an Israeli car and bus were damaged in two separate incidents nearby.
Hours later, three Palestinians were detained for throwing rocks at the separation barrier in the Kirbet Umm Al-Lahham village near Ramallah, the official added.

If my math is correct, the article indicates a 6:1 ratio Palis throwing rocks at Israelis.
Maybe The Israelis were merely throwing stones in defense, or in response?
