P.S. My wife is British and this is a running joke in our family. Fortunately she came to the States before National Health had a chance to pull all her teeth. She lost two before she came over, none in the 38 years she's been here in the US.

Attack temporarily shuts Afghanistan's Herat airport
[Dawn] Suspected Taliban militants fired at least one rocket into western Afghanistan's biggest airport on Friday, causing a temporary disruption to flights, officials said. Local police said the insurgents fired three rockets just outside a village in the Guzara district of Herat province, two slammed into the Herat air strip.

'The enemy fired three rockets at the airport which caused no casualties, only damaging the runway,' said provincial police spokesman Noor Khan Nikzad.

The airport is part of a military base for the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf).

An Isaf spokeswoman confirmed the rocket attack. 'Herat airport was hit by a rocket earlier today. There was some damage but it is being assessed. The airport was temporarily closed but is now operational,' Staff Sergeant Angela Eggman told AFP.

After the attack, police said officers rushed to the launch site where the militants had turned a tractor trailer into a mobile launch pad but fled.

Herat, less than an hour's drive from the border with Iran, is the second most prosperous city in Afghanistan.

Africa Horn
Shabaab deny responsibility for attack
A spokesman for Somalia's Al Shabab rebels denied yesterday that the group was behind a suicide bombing at a medical graduation ceremony that killed at least 22 people, including three government ministers.

But analysts pointed out that the bloodshed had been a PR disaster for the insurgents, and the UN envoy to the country said it was "outrageous" to suggest anyone else was to blame.

Doctors, students and their parents were among the dead at Mogadishu's Shamo Hotel following Thursday's attack, which was the worst in the failed Horn of Africa state for five months.

Suspicion had immediately fallen on the hardline Al Shabab group, which is battling the Western-backed government to impose its harsh interpretation of Islamic law across the country.

"We declare that Al Shabab did not mastermind that explosion ... we believe it is a plot by the government itself," Al Shabab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage told reporters. "It is not in the nature of Al Shabab to target innocent people."

Rage said serious political rifts had emerged between senior figures in President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed's administration, which controls little more than a few strategic areas of the capital.

"You know there is a power struggle ... that has been going on a long time," the insurgent spokesman said. "We know some so-called government officials left the scene of the explosion just minutes before the attack. That is why it is clear that they were behind the killing."

Western security agencies say Somalia has become a safe haven for militants, including foreign jihadists, who are using it to plot attacks across the impoverished region and beyond.

The UN special envoy to Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, said insurgents had been behind most of the recent high profile acts of violence to afflict the nation. "I think it is outrageous to suggest now that behind this killing is not the same group that killed the security minister, that attacked AMISOM (peacekeepers), that has stoned women and children to death," he said by telephone from Tokyo.

The United States accuses Al Shabab, the only Somali rebel group to have launched suicide attacks in the past, of being Al Qaeda's proxy in the drought-ravaged country.

Kamal Dahir, a Somali political analyst based in Nairobi, said Al Shabab has issued its denial very late. "I think that, after the explosion, Al Shabab commanders were sitting for hours to finalise what to do ... We are all convinced that the nature of the bombing and tactics used were similar to the group's previous attacks," Dahir said. "They realised it would turn the public against them, so denied being responsible to keep the little support they have."

In June, al Shabaab said it was behind a suicide bombing in Baladwayne town that killed Somalia's security minister and at least 30 other people. Then in September it struck the heart of the African Union's main military base in Mogadishu with twin suicide car bombs, killing 17 AMISOM peacekeepers.

Somalia blames al-Qaeda-linked group for attack
[Al Arabiya Latest]The Somali government on Friday blamed al-Qaeda-linked militants for a suicide bombing that killed 22 people in the capital, as government officials buried three Cabinet ministers killed in the attack.

Somalia's al-Shabab, the most powerful militant group in the African country, said it was not responsible for the attack, but government officials said the group denied responsibility only because so many Somalis had been angered by the bombing.

The bombing Thursday ripped through a university graduation ceremony at an upscale hotel in Mogadishu, killing medical students, doctors, journalists and three government ministers. The bombing has also killed Al Arabiya cameraman al-Hassan al-Zubeir.

"The investigation is still under way to uncover evidence of who might have been behind the attack, but we already know that this is the work of al-Qaeda through its affiliated group al-Shabab, because of the nature of the attack and the tactics used," said Security Minister Abdullahi Mohammed Ali.

"We have heard about that tragedy from the media. On behalf of the Shabab, we are not in any way involved in that incident," top spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamoud Rage said in a statement. He blamed the government for the bombing, an accusation vehemently denied by Somali officials.

Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for past suicide attacks in Somalia, and has never denied carrying out an attack. But militant groups tend to distance themselves from bombings that kill large numbers of civilians -- attacks that could draw popular outrage.

The government buried the three ministers killed in the blast, holding a ceremony at a Mogadishu hospital heavily guarded by government forces and African Union peacekeepers fearful that militants might try to attack the proceedings. The president and prime minister of the weak, U.N.-backed government attended.

[Bangla Daily Star] Two top cadres of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-ML) were killed in a "shootout" in Jagati village of the district early yesterday. The dead were identified as Rokon, 28, son of Korban Sheikh of West Mojampur, and Sagar alias Hatkata Sagar, 39, son of Shamsuddin of Chourhas of Kushtia town.
Alas, poor Rokon! Alas, poor Sagar alias Hatkata Sagar! Cut down in their prime!
According to police,a gunfight between the operatives of PBCP-ML and another outlawed party Gono Mukti Fouz over drug trading and control of the area broke out around 2:45pm.
"Aaaar! Eat hot lead, Gono Mukti Fooz!" [BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!]
"Aaaar! Die, Purbo Banglar Commies (Marxist-Leninist)!" [BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!]

On information, a police team led by Assistant Police Super (ASP-headquarters) Alamgir Hossain rushed to the spot and asked the outlaws to surrender.
"Here, youse miscreants! Cease and desist! It's still the middle of the afternoon! People are trying to stay awake!"
The outlaws started shooting at police prompting the law enforcers to fire back.
"Aaaar! Die coppers!" [BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!]
At one stage, the outlaws fled the scene
"Flip flops, don't fail us now!"
and police found bodies of Rokon and Sagar lying on the ground.
"Why, what's this? It looks like the perforated bodies of Rokon and Sagar alias Hatkata Sagar!"
They also recovered one pistol, one LG and seven bullets from the spot.
"Put these into the evidence bag, Seargeant Rafiq!"
Both Rokon and Sagar were involved with PBCP-ML, ASP Alamgir said.
"You know what that means, Legume!"
"Yes, inspector! Gono Mukti Fooz won the shootout!"
"And...?"
"And the Purbo Banglar Commies (Marxist-Leninist) are gonna need Dire Revenge™?"
"Bingo. You're coming along."

Police said Rokon is accused in 12 systems cases including four for murder while Sagar is accused in 11 cases including three for murder.
"Dat's right! He done 'em in! Eleven notches on 'is shutter gun!"
A case was filed on May 22, 2004 against Rokon for his involvement in a gunfight with a criminal gang and a joint contingent of police and BDR in Kushtia town on May 18, 2004, police said. Four gangsters and one BDR man were killed in the incident.

Anti-tank mine kills three in Pakistan's Chinari
[Dawn] A minibus carrying members of a wedding party struck an anti-tank mine in Pakistan's tribal belt on Friday, killing three people and wounding 15 others, officials said.

The blast hit in Chinari town, about 50 kilometres northwest of Ghalanai, the main town in Mohmand tribal region, which borders Afghanistan and has been the focus of a recent anti-Taliban operation.

'A vehicle carrying wedding guests hit an anti-tank mine, killing three people and wounding 15 others,' top local administration official Amjad Ali Khan told AFP, saying the death toll may rise.

Rasool Khan, another senior administration official, confirmed the incident and said that security forces had recently conducted an operation against insurgents in the area, which he said had been successful.

Pakistan's military is currently engaged in offensives against militants across much of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

Fata has been plagued by instability and militancy for years, exacerbated in 2001 when a US-led invasion ousted the Taliban regime from Afghanistan, sending hundreds of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants into the lawless region.

About 30,000 troops backed by helicopter gunships and fighter jets poured into South Waziristan in October to try to dismantle Taliban strongholds. The military says they are making progress crushing the threat.

But Washington and London are pressuring Pakistan to do more to capture Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and prevent militants crossing the border and targeting foreign troops stationed in Afghanistan.

Police release sketch of Rawalpindi bomber
[Dawn] The Islamabad Capital Territory Police has released a sketch of the teenage suicide bomber who blew himself at the entrance of the Naval Complex on Wednesday, DawnNews reported.

A senior police official told DawnNews in Islamabad that the sketch had been prepared with the help of eyewitnesses, who later confirmed that it closely resembled the actual attacker.

The Police official said the boy was between 14 and 17 years of age and belonged to Gilgit-Baltistan. He added that he was not familiar with Urdu.

The official also said that the young suicide bomber was seemingly forced to carry out the attack.

He further said that the bomber spent about forty-five minutes near the Naval Complex entrance before finally deciding to blow himself up.

Police have urged the family of the teenage suicide bomber to contact authorities in Islamabad on Rescue 15 emergency numbers. They have also announced a reward of 2.5 million rupee for anyone who can provide information about the suicide bomber.

Authorities added the informer's identity will be kept secret.

Two Taliban 'commanders' among 20 killed
[Dawn] Two Taliban 'commanders' were among 20 militants killed in clashes and air strikes in Swat and Orakzai Agency on Thursday.

In Swat, 13 insurgents were killed in clashes with security forces on Thursday. According to Swat media centre, security personnel came under fire when they raided a Taliban hideout in Sigram area of Koza Bandai. During an exchange of fire, 10 militants and one soldier were killed.

Detained militant commander Mohammad Naseem alias Abu Faraj was with the troops and he was also killed in the clash. Abu Faraj, a close aide of Maulana Fazlullah, was captured by security forces in September.

The terrorists killed in the clash included Luqman, Abdul Azim, Zahid, Nawab Ali, Abdul Samad, Amir Baz Khan, Saeedullah, Shafeeq Ahmed, Ali Hussain, and Shah Hussain. Their bodies were handed over to local police.

Another Taliban Commander Alamgir, and his father were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in Bar Thana area of Matta tehsil.

Bodies of two militants, Mian Gul and Zakir, were found in Peochar and Khwazakhela, respectively.

In Dherai, security forces blew up houses of three terrorists. Security personnel also arrested 180 suspects in different areas of Swat during house-to-house searches soon after the death of ANP MPA Shamsher Ali Khan in a suicide attack in his hujra in Dherai area, the hometown of Maulana Fazlullah.

In Orakzai, seven terrorists were killed and their five hideouts and camps of insurgents were destroyed by helicopter gunships in lower Orakzai agency on Thursday.

The helicopters pounded the hideouts of TTP terrorists in Feroze Khel, Dara Garhi and Mirbak areas where members of the Tariq Afridi group of Taliban are said to be based.

Afridi is the TTP chief of Khyber Agency and Darra Adam Khel. The death toll may rise because, according to sources, the house of local TTP chief, Akhunzada Aslam Farooqui, and an ammunition depot in Feroze Khel area were razed to ground.

Official sources said that almost all suicide attacks in Peshawar had been planned in the Orakzai Agency.

Police in Kohat, meanwhile, arrested 17 suspects, two foreigners among them, in a search operation on Thursday. Police also seized eight Kalashnikovs, five shot-guns, two rifles, six pistols and hundreds of cartridges.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
PRC wing, Israeli forces clash in central Gaza
[Ma'an] The military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees announced their launch of a projectile aimed at Israeli forces in central Gaza on Thursday night.

In a statement, the An-Nasser Brigades said a mortar shell was launched at a force of Israeli soldiers as they attempted to penetrate the Gaza Strip east of the Al-Bureij Refugee Camp.

An Israeli military official confirmed the incident, saying a mortar shell was launched in the direction of troops patrolling on the Israeli side of the Gaza border near the Kissufim military base. The official said the launch followed clashes with Palestinian gunmen.

According to the military, Palestinians in the area fired an anti-tank projectile at the patrol and opened fire on them. The forces responded by firing at their attackers. The official said there were no casualties or damages, but noted that the mortar shell followed the attack by a few minutes.
