"One night in September 1953, Walter Winchell got on the air and declared that Lucille Ball was a communist... For Lucy the charges came about when a voter’s registration card of hers from 1936 showed that she intended to vote for the Communist Party. She testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee explaining that she had no intention of ever voting communist – She didn’t even know a thing about politics. She had only registered as a communist to please her “Daddy”, Grandpa Hunt, who wanted his grandchildren to do so. In 1936 it wasn’t such a terrible thing, so they did it without giving it a second thought. Lucy was cleared of all charges and the public loved her more than ever after the ordeal."

Afghanistan
Suicide bomber kills 16 in western Afghanistan
A suicide bomber riding a motorcycle killed 16 people, including two children and a policeman, and wounded at least 23 others Friday in a busy city square in western Afghanistan, officials said.

Provincial Gov. Rohul Amin said the blast occurred about 55 yards (50 meters) from his compound in a crowded square in Farah.

Afghan police shouted "Stop! Stop!" at the motorcyclist before he detonated the explosives, provincial police chief Gen. Mohammad Faqir Askar said. It was unclear what the bomber was targeting.

Amin said the 16 killed included two children. Dr. Shir Agh Asas at the hospital in Farah city said several children also were among the wounded. A police officer also died.

"These days Taliban are causing high casualties because the foreign forces and Afghan forces have been conducting operations against the insurgency in the region," Askar said.

An operation three days ago in another part of the province killed five insurgents, including a Taliban commander and a bomb-maker, Askar said.

Arabia
Houthis destroy Saudi tanks, Humvees
The Houthi fighters say they have destroyed several Saudi Arabian military vehicles as Riyadh continues targeting Houthis north of Yemen.

The Shia fighters say they have destroyed six Humvees (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) and three tanks in the northern provinces of Omran and Harf Sufyan.

On Wednesday, the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of relentless missile attacks and artillery fire against civilians on the Yemeni soil.

The Saudis reportedly fired over 150 missiles and carried out 18 airstrikes.

Yemeni and Saudi forces have been jointly pounding the Houthis who have taken arms in protest to the Sunni-dominated Sana'a government's repression and discrimination against the country's Shia minority.

Saudi Arabia claims its forces have been striking Yemeni fighters who have taken refuge in its border territory, but the Houthis accuse the Saudi army of bombarding villages deep into the Yemeni soil.

The massive offensive has claimed the lives of large numbers of people, including women and children.

Houthis Face Heavy Ground, Aerial Shelling
Yemeni and Saudi forces continue their ground and aerial strikes against Houthi strongholds in the districts of Malahidh, Shada, Razih, Maqash, Hassana, and nearby villages. Houthis said that the Saudi army launches airstrikes and rockets while the Yemeni army fires mortar shelling and Katyusah missiles, plus intensive air raids on villages and farmlands stretching over 60km along the Yemeni-Saudi border. A Saudi official source said their troops used F-15 and Tornado jets, Apache fighters and heavy mortars in attacking Houthi hideouts.

Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz said on Monday that the kingdom's territory were cleared of Houthis, and clashes between Houthis and Saudi troops are taking place on Yemeni soil.

A Saudi military source confirmed on Tuesday that Houthis use hit-and-run tactics in their confrontations with Saudi troops, pointing out that Houthi fighters resort to launching surprise assaults against military positions. "This situation put Saudi troops on full alert in order to thwart such surprise attacks," the Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper quoted the source as saying.

Alarabyia.net reported that Houthis attacked military positions with Katyusha rockets and heavy mortars earlier this week, adding that other clashes between Saudi troops and Houthis took place at the border, particularly in areas overlooking Dukhan Mountain from the Saudi side. According to the Spokesperson for Yemeni Army Colonel Askar Zuail, fierce clashes are taking place in the Malahidh district after the army took over the Khazaen Mountain, north of the district.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani expressed curiosity about operations by the Saudi army inside Yemeni territory, pointing out that the U.S. supports the Saudi operations.

Fatwa
Dozens of religious clerics in Saudi Arabia released a fatwa statement instigating people against Houthis for their standing clashes with the Kingdom at the Yemeni-Saudi border. Signed by 42 Saudi clerics, including Nasser Al-Omar, the statement called on all people of the kingdom to be on high alert toward what they called "Shia Expansion" and take necessary security measures to thwart Shia threats.

From his side, Mr. Mohammed Khatmi, a Tehran mosque preacher and a member of the Leadership Experts Council, condemned the fatwa made by Saudi clerics, saying that this fatwa is supported by Western intelligence organizations. During a program titled "From Tehran" televised by the Al-Alam satellite channel on Tuesday, Khatmi said, "Those who made such a fatwa never dared issue statements condemning Israeli practices against the Palestinian people even once."

The Iranian official called on Muslim clerics to sit together through the pilgrimage season and denounce the Saudi fatwa that hurts Muslims, as well as to show the world that this fatwa contradicts the values of Islam and serves western and Zionist interests.

The Houthi group called on the Arab League to intervene, stopping the Saudi military operations against its members, and denying reports that they have relations with Iran. In a letter addressed to the Arab League Secretary-General Amro Mossa, the Houthis field leader Abdulmalik Al-Houthi condemned the Saudi assaults against Yemen, asking that the Arab League to do its job in investigating roots of the crisis.

Houthis accused the Yemeni government of involving the Saudi army in a war against Yemeni people. "The Arab League should support the national dialogue in order to eradicate prejudices that Iran has a role in the Sa'ada fighting," Abdulmalik Al-Houthi said. "The Yemeni regime is responsible for fuelling the fighting and direct involvement of Saudi forces in the war."

Humanitarian situation
Regional Director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) for the Middle East and North Africa Sigrid Kaag, warned of miserable conditions to be faced by displaced as a result of ongoing clashes in Sa'ada governorate and neighboring areas.

She called on all parties to the conflict to protect children from violence, and help in securing a humanitarian corridor for access of aid agencies to war-affected civilians. "Fighting has now spilled into Saudi Arabia, reportedly causing 240 villages to be evacuated and more than 50 schools to be closed," Kaag said in a statement.

The information came from UNICEF's contacts on the ground, a spokeswoman said in Geneva, giving no further details. UNICEF voiced deep concern at the escalation of the conflict in north Yemen, where the United Nations now says 175,000 people have been displaced by the fighting. More than 15,000 are staying in al-Mazraq camp in Hajjah province, the population of which has doubled in the past month, according to Kaag.

"Deaths have been recorded among children in the camp as malnutrition, already a chronic problem in Yemen, is reaching alarming levels," she noted. "More than 600 children in the camp are being treated for severe acute malnutrition."

Colombia Says Venezuelan Soldiers Blew Up 2 Border Bridges
Venezuelan soldiers blew up two pedestrian bridges across the Colombia-Venezuelan border, Colombia's government said Thursday, according to Reuters.

It is the latest incident in what is an already-strained relationship.

Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva said explosives were used to blow up the bridges in what he called a violation of international law, Reuters reported.

"Uniformed men, apparently from the Venezuelan army, arrived in trucks on the Venezuelan side at two pedestrian bridges that link communities on both sides ... and then proceeded to dynamite them," Silva said, according to Reuters.

A U.S. drone fired two missiles at a compound being used by suspected Taliban militants in a village near Mir Ali in North Waziristan, according to two intelligence officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.

The compound was destroyed and eight bodies were pulled from the rubble, the officials said, adding that two other suspected militants were wounded.

Troops also arrested five Taliban following a clash in Chungazai area of Mamoond tehsil, while two Taliban were arrested from Khar.

In South Waziristan, security forces "engaged and cleared a Taliban [hideout] ...near Kikrai" on the Jandola-Sararogha front, said an ISPR statement.

"During the clash, seven Taliban were killed," said the ISPR, adding that troops also consolidated their positions around Tor Wam, and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition.

Terrorists strike Peshawar twice
[Dawn] Peshawar went through yet another day of bloodbath on Thursday when two strikes, within a space of 14 hours, left 22 people dead.

The first target was the city's judicial complex, where a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a court building early in the morning, and the other came late in the night when a roadside bomb destroyed a police van.

The first attack claimed the better part of the casualties -- 20 dead and 50 injured.

Three policemen were among the dead. The hit on the police van killed two security personnel. Blood, flesh and shattered window glass littered the ground outside the court building, whose main gate was uprooted by the force of the blast.

It was the sixth attack on the city in 11 days and came just three days after a suicide bomber blew up a car packed with explosives, killing four people in a suburb. The attack devastated a mosque, damaged a college and a police station.

'The bomber was on foot and tried to get into the judicial complex through its main entry gate. He blew himself up when stopped by police guards at the main gate of the complex,' police officials said.

Dr Sahib Gul, head of the trauma centre of the Lady Reading Hospital, told Dawn that 16 victims were brought dead to the hospital, four died in the hospital and condition of two of the injured was critical.

The three dead policemen were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Khaista Gul, Constables Fazal Rahim and Irfanullah. The injured policemen were Umer Hayat, Tariq Khan, Samiullah, Arshad and Samiullah Khan.

A lawyer, Qazi Samiullah, from Dir district, and a court official, Ayub Khan, were also killed.

An office assistant of the Peshawar District Bar Association, Sarwar Khan, who was deputed at the entrance and was very popular among the lawyers, also died in the bombing.

Eight to 10 kilograms of explosives laced with ball bearings were used in the blast, an official of the bomb disposal unit said.

Superintendent of Police Nisar Khan Marwat told Dawn that the bomber's target was the main building, but the policemen stopped him at the main gate.

'Had the bomber succeeded in reaching the main building, casualties would have been far higher,' the SP said.

Cars and rickshaws parked outside the building on the main Khyber Road were badly damaged.

'I was coming down the stairs in the court when shrapnel from the blast just flew past my head. I was shaken,' a court employee said.

Policeman Shakeel Ahmed, who escaped unhurt but left traumatized, told Dawn that he was going to his office on Khyber Road when his car was hit by shrapnel, human flesh and blood.

The court building comprises district civil and criminal courts and government departments.

The judicial complex has been under heightened security since early last month.

The four-storey complex is located just across the sprawling residence of the Corps Commander of Peshawar and the Pearl Continental Hotel.

The hotel had been hit by a suicide bombing in June, killing 11 people and injuring 50.

The Supreme Court Bar Association's President, Qazi Muhammad Anwer, called upon lawyers to observe a countrywide strike on Friday to condemn the attack.

Attack on police
The bomb attack on the police van ripped through the vehicle, killing two policemen on the spot and wounding five civilians on the outskirts of Peshawar, adds AFP.

'It was a remote-controlled bomb packed with steel pellets, which was planted on the roadside,' senior police official Mohammad Karim Khan said.

The left side of the patrol vehicle, which can seat around six policemen in the back of the cabin, was badly damaged in the attack.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli aircraft hit Gaza after rocket attacks
Israeli aircraft struck a weapons-manufacturing facility and two smuggling tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip on Thursday, in response to recent rocket attacks on Israel, the military said.

Palestinian security officials reported no injuries.

Israel went to war against militants in Hamas-ruled Gaza last winter to quash eight years of rocket and mortar fire that terrorized southern Israel and killed 18 civilians.

More than 1,400 Palestinians were killed in the war, and since it ended on Jan. 18, the attacks have decreased sharply. According to the military's count, 270 rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel since the three-week offensive ended on Jan. 18, compared with more than 3,300 in 2008.

But Israel says weapons and weapons-making components still reach militants through tunnels under Gaza's border with Egypt. And sporadic fire continues, including a rocket attack Wednesday that caused no injuries.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it would "respond to any attempt to disrupt the calm in Israel's southern communities."

Two shot dead, seven wounded in blast in Thai south
Suspected Islamic terrorists insurgents in Thailand's restive south have shot and killed two Thai Buddhist men and wounded seven other men with a bomb hidden in a motorcycle, police said Friday.

They said a 32-year-old construction worker was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in troubled Pattani province mid-Thursday afternoon as he went to pick up his children from school. In the same province that evening, a 35-year-old university employee was killed in a drive-by shooting while returning from work.

Five soldiers and two villagers were wounded, three of the soldiers critically, when a bomb was detonated in a motorbike stationed at a checkpoint in neighbouring Yala province on Friday afternoon.
