Afghanistan
Blast kills Canadian soldier
Duty. Honour. Country.
Justin Garrett Boyes was leading a foot patrol of Afghan National police through a district heavily populated by Taliban Wednesday morning when the ground exploded beneath him.

Lieutenant Boyes, a 26-year-old father who had just arrived for his second tour of duty in Kandahar 10 days ago, did not survive the blast. Two other Canadian soldiers were injured when the device planted by insurgents detonated at about 9 a.m. They are expected to recover. But Lt. Boyes, the platoon commander for a police mentoring unit based out of the PRT in Kandahar city, was too badly wounded.
May the wounded heal well and quickly. And may the Lieutenant's sacrifice prove to have led to victory.

Obama officially extends sanctions on Sudan
[Al Arabiya Latest] American President Barack Obama renewed sanctions on Sudan late on Tuesday, a week after unveiling a new policy of pressure and incentives toward the Khartoum government aimed at settling the simmering conflict.

The one-year extension, which Obama made official in a notice to the U.S. Congress, followed his announcement earlier this month of a new carrot-and-stick policy aimed at ending violence in Sudan's Darfur region and the semi-autonomous South.

The sanctions restrict U.S. trade with and investment in Sudan, freezes the Sudanese government assets in the United States, and bans transactions with individuals and entities linked to the conflict in Darfur.

Obama, who during last year's U.S. presidential campaign urged a tougher line on Khartoum, has justified the shift as necessary to prevent the oil-rich African giant from falling further into chaos.

Unveiling the revised strategy on Oct. 19, the administration set goals to end war crimes in Darfur and ensure implementation of a fraying 2005 peace deal between Khartoum and former southern rebels ahead of national elections next year and a 2011 referendum on southern secession.

#1  And bunnys will be happy?

Moslems rape and kill black Christians, and under expert care from that government - enjoy no protection from the idiot tribes that Osama started out.
Weapons are freely handed to the ruling tribes and no one seems to care.

The south must separate from the north to preserve anything at this point, and this genocide is not popular in our political circles.

It is a big thing to me as well as DR Congo and Rwanda. Eritia and Somalia. May as well throw "Ivory coast" in there as well.
Even South Africa is turning back into Hati.

What a tragic mess that this Prez"" could have more heavy access and influence on which he has not.

Need I not say even that after his criminal turn in his homeland in Kenya. His work in the overturn of that government was criminal to me as is the one in Honduras.

6 JMB men arrested in Naogaon
[Bangla Daily Star] Police yesterday arrested six militants of the banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) during a raid at a JMB leader's house under Raninagar upazila in Naogaon.

Among the arrestees, Masud Rana, 40, son of Khabir Sheikh, a JMB area commander and close associate of the executed JMB leader Siddikul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, hails from Bashbaria village of the upazila.

Others are Rajibul Islam Rocket, 33, Manjur Rahman, 26, of Tegachhi Senpara, Belal Hossain, 33, Saiduzzaman Ratan, 36, and Mirza Mia, 33, of Jhikra village in Bagmara upazila of Rajshahi.

Acting on a tip off, a police team led by Abbas Ali, officer-in-charge of Raninagar Police Station, raided the house of Khabir Sheikh around 2:00pm and arrested them under Section 54 though another six to seven persons managed to flee.

The police went to Khabir's house on information that a few JMB men sat in a meeting there, said Ahmaruzzaman, additional superintendent of police in Naogaon.

According to locals, the arrestees had roles in the Purbo Banglar Communist Party activities and were working for JMB.

Khabir Sheikh is an accused in the JMB victim Idris Ali Khejur murder case.

China-Japan-Koreas
China to send fresh anti-piracy navy convoy
CHINA will deploy a fresh naval convoy to the Gulf of Aden to protect vessels from Somali pirates, state media said today, just 10 days after a Chinese cargo ship was hijacked by armed bandits.

The flotilla setting sail tomorrow will consist of two missile frigates tasked with replacing two other Chinese frigates currently patrolling pirate-ridden shipping lanes in the gulf, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Last week the Chinese coal-carrying vessel De Xin Hai was seized by pirates in the Indian Ocean northeast of the Seychelles with 25 crew members on board, prompting China to vow to rescue the vessel and crew.

The new convoy will be the fourth to take part in international anti-piracy efforts in the region since the end of last year, Xinhua quoted a spokesman from the People's Liberation Army Navy as saying.

The two frigates will be joined by a supply ship that has been on duty in the area for about three months.

In total, the convoy will boast a crew of more than 700, including a special forces unit, and will be equipped with two shipborne helicopters, the unnamed spokesman was quoted as saying.

Detroit mosque leader killed in FBI raids
More detailed version of earlier story...
The leader of a black separatist Detroit mosque was shot and killed Wednesday during a series of FBI raids that resulted in charges against 12 and the death of an FBI dog. At least six of those charged -- who face conspiracy, weapons, and stolen goods charges but not terrorism charges -- were in federal custody late Wednesday afternoon.
"Don't shoot, coppers! We're comin' out!"
"Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, Mahmoud!"

The case involves the Joint Terrorism Task Force and prosecutors from the national security unit of the U.S. Attorney's Office.

A complaint filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit names Luqman Ameen Abdullah, imam of the Masjid Al-Haqq mosque in Detroit, as "a highly placed leader of a nationwide radical fundamentalist Sunni group." He was killed in a gun battle during one of the raids, according to a joint statement by federal officials.

Abdullah, 53, also known as Christopher Thomas, was the local leader of a black Muslim group that calls itself "Ummah," or the brotherhood, and wants to establish a separate state within the United States governed by Sharia law, Interim U.S. Attorney Terrence Berg and Andrew Arena, FBI special agent in charge in Detroit, said in a joint statement.
This is not the peaceful variety of the Religion of Peace.
The Ummah is headed nationally by Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown, who is serving a state sentence for the murder of two police officers in Georgia.
Ah yes, H Rapp Brown, Black Panther 'Justice Minister' and cop killer. This close to Hallowee'n it's uncanny how many undead are rising up to haunt us yet again.
A 45-page complaint alleged that Luqman Ameen Abdullah "calls his followers to an offensive jihad," "regularly preaches anti-government and anti-law enforcement rhetoric" and preaches that every Muslim should "have a weapon and should not be scared to use their weapon when needed."

The complaint further alleged that an armed group known as the "Sutra team" protected the mosque. In January, when members were evicted from a building on Joy Road for non-payment of property taxes, Detroit police confiscated two firearms, about 40 knives and martial arts weapons from Abdullah's apartment, the complaint alleged. The mosque then relocated to Clairmount in Detroit, the complaint says.

Abdullah was to be arrested on a complaint that included charges of conspiracy to commit federal crimes, sale or receipt of stolen goods, providing firearms to a convicted felon, being a felon in possession of body armor, and altering or removing vehicle identification numbers. According to the complaint, Abdullah told an informant that if the FBI came to get him: "I'll just strap a bomb on and blow up everybody." On another occasion, he said: "We've got to take out the U.S. government," the complaint alleges.

The others charged are:
  • Mohammad Abdul Salaam, also known as Gregory Stone, 45, of Detroit with conspiracy to commit federal crimes and sale or receipt of stolen goods.

  • Abdullah Beard, also known as Detric Lamont Driver, 37, of Detroit with conspiracy to commit federal crimes.

  • Abdul Saboor, also known as Dwayne Edward Davis, 37, of Detroit with conspiracy to commit federal crimes.

  • Mujahid Carswell, also known as Mujahid Abdullah, 30, of Detroit and Ontario, Canada, with conspiracy to commit federal crimes.

  • Adam Ibraheem, 38, of Detroit with conspiracy to commit federal crimes.

  • Gary Laverne Porter, 59, of Detroit with conspiracy to commit federal crimes and possession of firearms by a convicted felon.

  • Ali Abdul Raqib, 57, of Detroit with conspiracy to commit federal crimes.

  • Mohammad Alsahi, also known as Mohammad Palestine, 33, of Ontario, Canada, with conspiracy to commit federal crimes.

  • Yassir Ali Khan, 30, of Ontario, Canada, and Warren, with conspiracy to commit federal crimes.

  • Mohammad Abdul Bassir, also known as Franklin D. Roosevelt Williams, 50, of Ojibway Correctional Facility with conspiracy to commit federal crimes, sale or receipt of stolen goods, mail fraud, supplying firearms to felons, possession of weapons by a felon, and altering or removing motor vehicle identification numbers.
One more man, A.C. Pusha, was charged in a separate complaint late Wednesday and charged with conspiracy to commit federal crimes.

Salaam, Saboor, Porter, Beard, Ibraheem, Raqib, and Pusha all appeared in U.S. District Court in Detroit late Wednesday afternoon and were held pending detention hearings Thursday. Others charged are still at large. The operation involved locations in Detroit and Dearborn. Yellow police tape was put up outside a trucking and warehouse firm on Miller Road just north of Michigan Avenue, and a Dearborn police car was parked outside. Another site involved in the raids was on Tireman near Interstate 96 on the city's west side. A third site raided by the FBI was on Genesee in Detroit.
An awful lot of jihadi arrests all of a sudden. I wonder why?

#14  Two arrested were from Canada and in the same newspaper they announced a new ICE federal task force to tackle cross-border crimes. This may be just part of a much bigger problem:

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement unveiled today a 50-member task force comprised of federal, state, local and Canadian agencies designed to combat cross-border crimes.
The Border Enforcement Security Task Force, or BEST, will focus on national security and terrorist threats, human smuggling and trafficking, contraband smuggling, money laundering, bulk cash smuggling, transnational gang activities and other criminal acts. The team, which is the third along the northern border, covers 721 miles. The initiative will be housed in the federal building downtown (Detroit).

#15  I'm glad they have been proactive on this lately despite some of the sympathizers in the WH:

RE: CAIR Dinner
Stephen Schwartz, executive director of the Center for Islamic Pluralism, a Washington-based think tank, calls Siraj Wahhaj one of the most prominent and strident African-American Islamic preachers in America.
"He's a hatemonger, there's no question about it," Schwartz said. "He's the No. 1 advocate of radical Islamic ideology among African-Americans. His stuff is very appealing to young Muslims who are on a radical path."
Schwartz identified Wahhaj — born in New York as Jeffrey Kearse — as a "leading radical Islamist" in "Black America, Prisons and Radical Islam," a 2008 report by his organization. According to the report, which cited Federal Bureau of Prisons figures, some 175 titles of Wahhaj's literature were found in prison libraries that year.
Schwartz said Wahhaj's writings seek to radicalize Muslims behind bars, particularly African-Americans. Saturday's speech, he said, will likely appeal to Muslims who feel they've been targeted recently by conservatives.
"He'll get up and say American Muslims are under attack, that their civil rights are being denied," Schwartz said. "He'll say that anybody who questions the community of these Muslim groups, that they're agents of the Zionists. He'll say that the criticism of CAIR, and of him, is all racism, the evil work of the Zionists and the media, and he'll say that American should get out of Afghanistan and any involvement in the Muslim world."

#16  AP has this to add:

Andrew Arena, the head of the FBI office in Detroit, said Thursday that the 11 men charged follow "a very hybrid radical ideology" that mainstream Muslims "would not recognize."

Still at large Thursday are 30-year-old Yassir Ali Khan of Warren and Ontario; 30-year-old Mujahid Carswell of Detroit and Ontario and 33-year-old Mohammad Philistine of Ontario. Authorities say Carswell is armed and dangerous.

#17  Hmmm. Just wondering here if anybody has any stats on the ratio between African-American women and African-American men who convert is Islam. I mean, Islam in general doesn't seem like a very appealing ideology for women. Also, as noted by Lumpy, the conversion efforts seem to target people who are behind bars of whom the vast majority are men, not women. So I'm just wondering if some of the African-American men who convert to Islam are lonely. Then the question would be: are they lonely because they are Muslims or are they Muslims because they are lonely?

#19  Update:
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police took 30-year-old Mujahid Carswell, who was considered armed and dangerous, into custody Thursday. No other details were released.Another man not named in the complaint also was arrested.

The 43-page complaint described Abdullah as an extremist who believed the FBI bombed New York's World Trade Center in 1993 and the Oklahoma City federal building two years later. Two were still at large: 30-year-old Yassir Ali Khan of Warren and Ontario, and 33-year-old Mohammad Philistine of Ontario.

The FBI built its case over two years with the help of confidential sources close to Abdullah who recorded conversations and participated in undercover operations involving the sale of furs, laptop computers, televisions, energy drinks and power tools.

Abdullah received at least 20 percent of any profit and claimed the "Prophet Muhammad said that it is okay to participate in theft; as long as that person prays, they are in a good state," Leone wrote in the affidavit.

#20  This is more extensive than just a few radicals hanging out in the low rent district of Detroit.
Head of the Ummah:
Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin was born Hubert Gerold Brown in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1943, but is popularly known as H. Rap Brown. When he was paroled in 1976, Al-Amin became Imam of the Atlanta Community Mosque, and in 1983 he established Imam Jamil Al-Amin’s National Community, a coalition of 30 mosques that fell under his guidance.

In 1990, Al-Amin was elected Vice President of the American Muslim Council, which would later become a member organization of Sami Al-Arian’s National Coalition to Protect Political Freedom.

In 1992, Imam Jamil Al-Amin’s National Community became a member of the Bosnia Task Force, an alliance of ten Muslim groups supporting Muslims affected by the Bosnian War. The following year Al-Amin helped organize the Islamic Shura Council of North America, which brought together the Islamic Society of North America, the Islamic Circle of North America, the Ministry of Imam W. Deen Mohammed, and Imam Jamil’s National Community.

Along with Philadelphia cop-killer (and former Black Panther) Mumia Abu Jamal, Al-Amin ranks among the most celebrated “political prisoners” championed by the political left.

Al-Amin's Atlanta mosque...In 1995, two of its members were convicted of illegally shipping more than 900 firearms to groups in Detroit and Philadelphia, and to an Islamic gang linked to Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind sheikh of New York. One young convert at Al-Amin's mosque subsequently joined Islamic separatists in Kashmir, where he was killed attacking an Indian army post.

India-Pakistan
Maoist rebels flee after storming Indian train
INDIAN police took control of a stranded high-speed train in eastern India yesterday after it was stormed by hundreds of tribal people linked to Maoist rebels.

The Rajdhani Express, one of the country's most prestigious passenger trains, was stopped in West Bengal state.

The attackers demanded the release of their leader, who had been arrested on charges of helping the country's growing Maoist rebellion.

Police earlier said the attackers were Maoists, who have stepped up violence across eastern and central India and against whom the Indian government has planned a large-scale offensive.

The Maoist rebellion began four decades ago championing the cause of poor peasants in the east, but has now spread to about 20 of India's 29 states, with the rebels targeting police and government property in hit-and-run attacks.

Police said the men who attacked the train wanted security forces to stop an anti-Maoist crackdown in the area around Lalgarh, a town at the centre of protests against an industrial expansion plan.

Security forces took over the train unopposed as the attackers fled, police said. All the passengers were unharmed.

GHQ siege mastermind captured, claim police
Security agencies captured on Tuesday 'Qari' Ishtiaq, a key 'commander' of the Punjabi Tehrik-i-Taliban network, who allegedly masterminded the Oct 10 attack on the army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

Ishtiaq was arrested during a raid in Bahawalpur and security agents seized 400 kilograms of explosives and weapons.
Um. That seems like quite a lot.
He is also said to be linked to the Islamabad Marriot Hotel bombing and attacks on the Manawan Police Training School and FIA headquarters in Lahore.

Ishtiaq was arrested on information provided by Hijratullah who had been captured outside the Manawan Police School on March 30.
And subsequently spent a great deal of time getting to know the various truncheon numbers and flavours of mustache wax.
Seven other militants were picked up from Sargodha, Gujranwala and Mailsi on information provided by Ishtiaq.

Security was beefed up in Lahore after receiving information that two militants had entered the city with explosive-laden vehicles. Police said that pickets and road checkpoints had been alerted about two cars (one of them LEM-4942 white Suzuki), which could be used for bombing attacks.

According to sources, the Taliban had also transported a Mazda truck a few days ago, containing 2,500kg explosives stuffed in canisters of vegetable ghee, for terror attacks in Punjab.
The explosion will whet appetites for kilometers around.
Capital City Police Officer Pervez Rathore told Dawn that agencies had warned police three times over the past weeks about the arrival of suspects and explosive-packed vehicles.

Intelligence reports also suggested that 15 suicide bombers, aged between 16 and 20, had entered Punjab with as many explosive-packed vehicles. Nine of the 15 vehicles were said to be white, three red and another three were silver coloured.

According to the sources, terrorists could target government buildings, sensitive installations, schools and markets. A police official, however, cautioned that not all information provided on by intelligence agencies could be correct.

He said it was not possible for police to guard all high-profile personalities, establishments, offices and places mentioned in dozens of reports issued by the agencies over the past six months because going by them the entire city would appear to be the target of terror attacks.

Five turbans held in Karachi with 150kg of explosives
[Dawn] The CID police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested five members of a banned militant outfit and seized about 150 kilos of explosives of Indian origin, automatic rifles and suicide vests from them.
They could tell it was Indian because it was uncircumcised.
A senior CID police official said that the five suspected militants, all residents of Karachi, were arrested in different parts of Orangi Town and they were planning terror attacks on key installations in the city.

'Initial investigations suggest that they all are militants and associated with the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi. They have a history of police arrests on different charges,' said CID SP Fayyaz Khan.

'We have seized two suicide jackets, two sacks containing 150 kilos of explosives made by an Indian company and five Kalashnikov rifles with bullets and magazines.'

The SP was speaking to reporters at the DJ College Ground on Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road where the seized explosives and suicide jackets were being defused by the officials of the Bomb Disposal Squad.

However, he did not offer an explanation when asked why he chose a playground, and that too in the high-security zone of the city, for a site to defuse the seized explosives.

When asked whether the arrested suspects had any links with India, the official said that investigations were in an early stage and the CID did not reach any conclusion about the suspects' connections with the neighbouring country.

The arrested suspects, aged between 25 and 26 years, are identified as Nasir alias Saifullah, Shakeel Barmi, Atif alias Chooha, Wasim alias Baroodi and Afzal alias Rickshaw Wala.

The official was reluctant to share details of the police action which led to the arrest of the suspected militants.

However, he said the CID police were looking for four of their accomplices -- Rasheed Swati, Arif alias Chota, Danish and Naseer -- who were still at large.

The CID police claimed that the arrested suspects were planning to target government buildings and prominent individuals. 'Their main targets were government buildings and hotels,' said SP Khan.

'The initial investigations revealed that the suspects were also planning to target prominent personalities including politicians and government members.'

The seized explosives were put on display at the DJ College Ground. The inscription on the two white plastic bags containing about 100 kilos of potassium chlorate, read: 'Manufactured by Vaigai Industries, Karaikal, India'.

The remaining 50 kilos of explosive material was packed in two small aluminium boxes.

The fresh arrest of the alleged militants came as a fifth such action of the CID in the city, as only a couple of weeks ago they had arrested the alleged Amir of the Karachi chapter of the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and his accomplices.

Troops surround key TTP village on way to Sararogha
Security forces on Wednesday besieged a key Taliban stronghold near Sararogha in South Waziristan from three directions.

The village, Kaniguram, was considered the operational centre of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the agency.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said after surrounding Kaniguram from three sides, the forces advanced into the Jandola-Sararogha axis and secured several important heights in the Nawazkot area on the Razmak-Makeen axis.

The ISPR statement said security forces had achieved substantial success on all three fronts.

The government said on Wednesday the terrorists were "on the run" and attacking civilian targets in "desperation" as the military was destroying Taliban hideouts in the ongoing offensive, adding that 25 Taliban had been killed and large caches of arms recovered in the last 24 hours from various parts of South Waziristan.

The security forces suffered no casualty in the last 24 hours.

Addressing a press briefing, ISPR Director General Maj Gen Athar Abbas and Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said the operation was progressing successfully and the terrorists, contrary to their claims of putting up stiff resistance, were on the run.

Maj Gen Abbas said the military was gaining ground on the Jandola-Sararogha axis and securing heights along the Kotkai-Sararogha main road which overlooks Sararogha. He said security forces had secured the important Nullah Junction, two kilometres north of Ganrakas along with an important height, Point 1233 west of Kotkai-Sararogha road.

He said that during the search operation in Murghabund, three terrorist training complexes had been discovered and destroyed, and a number of 82mm mortar and single barrel rocket launchers recovered.

Maj Gen Abbas said the forces had also achieved success on the Shakai-Kaniguram axis and had secured important posts around Kaniguram, the major stronghold of Uzbek terrorists.

An important post, Karwan Manza, located 2 km east of Kaniguram, had also been secured, he said. Qaira and Abbas told the press briefing that the Taliban had trained several minors as suicide bombers, who were attempting to sneak into North Waziristan.

According to ISPR figures, 264 terrorists have been killed during the operation that was launched on the 17th of this month, while six terrorists have been arrested, but no high-value targets had been acquired so far. The security forces have lost 31 men and 94 personnel have been injured. To a question, the ISPR DG said intelligence reports had revealed that key terrorists leaders Waliur Rehman and Qari Hussain were still in South Waziristan, while the whereabouts of Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) chief Hakeemullah Mehsud were unknown.

He said there were unconfirmed reports that TTP Swat chief Fazullah was also hiding in the valley.

Maj General Abbas said the arrested terrorists would be tried in civilian anti-terrorist courts for which amendments were being made in the anti-terrorism laws.

To a question about the military's apprehensions over US aid through the Kerry Lugar law, he said the armed forces had expressed their reservations in an official statement issued after the corps commanders' meeting and he would not comment on the issue further. Commenting on the vacating of border posts by NATO forces following the start of the Waziristan military offensive, Maj General Abbas said the international forces had only "readjusted" their positions.

#2  Looks like cautious envelopment advances in hilly terrain to the west of Sara Rogha, which they're avoiding assaulting directly.

Either that, or they're just showily marching around & seizing empty hilltops conveniently close to the local roads. Hard to tell from this account.

Bloodbath in Peshawar: at least 105 killed, 200 injured in Meena Bazaar car bombing
Continuing coverage of yesterday's story...
A remote-controlled car bomb killed at least 105 people -- including women and children -- and injured around 200 others at the provincial capital's Meena Bazaar on Wednesday, said officials, hours after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Pakistan to bolster the two countries' alliance against Taliban and Al Qaeda.

"We have received 92 bodies and some parts of bodies and 200 injured people -- including 70 women and children," said Haider Afridi, chief executive of the Lady Reading Hospital. He said around 25 people -- mostly women -- were in critical condition, while only 25 bodies had so far been identified.

"Nineteen of the dead are women and 11 are children. All the dead are civilians," Dr Zafar Iqbal told the AFP news agency as staff declared an emergency and called for blood donations.

NWFP Information Minister Iftikhar Hussain, however, said, "More than 80 people were killed ... around 200, mostly women and children, were injured in the car bomb blast."

Bomb disposal squad chief Shafqat Malik told reporters that 150 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the remote-controlled blast. He said that some people were still trapped under the rubble.

Addressing reporters at the Lady Reading Hospital, Iftikhar linked the Meena Bazaar blast with the ongoing military operation in South Waziristan against the Taliban, saying, "foreign terrorists -- including Arabs, Chechens and Uzbeks -- stationed in Waziristan are carrying out attacks in Pashtun areas".

In a message to foreign and local Taliban, the minister said, "We (civilians and the army) have won the war in Malakand division ... the fight against terrorism will continue and we will eliminate terrorists even if we have to pay with our lives."

Although nobody claimed responsibility, suspicion immediately fell on the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

Sunia -- a 14-year-old girl who was badly injured in her right leg -- told Daily Times she had come to Meena Bazaar for shopping, as her sister was getting married next week. "It was a powerful blast... I saw smoke and dust everywhere. I saw body parts and people dying or screaming on the road," another witness told Daily Times.

According to the AFP news agency, the explosion brought down buildings. Flames reached out of burning wreckage and smoke billowed over the collapsed rubble of a mosque and three buildings, where rescue workers picked charred bodies out of smouldering debris and gathered human flesh in plastic bags.

Crying for help, men tried to pull survivors from beneath wreckage. One man carried away a baby with a bloody face and a group of men rescued a young boy covered in dust, but others found only bodies of the dead.

In a bid to disperse the crowd that gathered after the blast, police fired in the air and baton charged people standing near the blast site.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Liaqat Ali told reporters that terrorists were "confused" because of the security in the city, and were -- therefore -- targeting public places. He said, "There was information that an explosives-laden car had entered the city."

Mohammad Faqir, a shopkeeper at Meena Bazaar, said although people -- mostly women -- from the entire province and FATA visited the bazaar for shopping, there were no proper security arrangements.

According to the APP news agency, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has strongly condemned the attack, and said the government would not rest until all terrorists had been eliminated. The prime minister said the government had launched a full-scale operation against the Taliban in South Waziristan, and "we will not be cowed down by such attacks". He said the government was fully aware of its responsibility of protecting the lives and property of civilians, and was taking necessary measures in this context. He directed provincial authorities to investigate the matter and submit a report.

APP also reported that Senior NWFP Minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour had ruled out a security lapse as the cause of the blast at the market.

Three bomb attacks have been launched in Peshawar this month, including one that killed more than 50 people. They are part of at least 10 major attacks in Pakistan.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Lebanese army dismantles 4 rockets near Israel
[Al Arabiya Latest] The Lebanese troops early Wednesday found and dismantled four rockets near the border with Israel, a day after a rocket hit the Jewish state, a senior Lebanese army official said. The attack Tuesday drew a rapid response from Israeli artillery in a brief flare-up across the tense border that caused no casualties.

A security source in Lebanon said eight rockets fired from Israel then hit near the border village of Hula. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

An Israeli military spokeswoman later confirmed that "artillery had opened fire on the sector from which the Katyusha rocket was fired."

She said the army considered the attack as "serious, and considers that responsibility for it falls on the Lebanese government."

The Lebanese official said the rockets, discovered on Wednesday, were placed in a building under construction in the Houla area from where Tuesday's rocket was launched. He said three of the four Katyusha rockets found were ready to be fired. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.
