US Pounds Taliban Convoy in Afghan South
[Quqnoos] At least 21 Taliban insurgents were killed in a US-led air strike in the south-western Afghan province of Nimroz, officials said on Thursday

The US jet fighters bombed three Taliban vehicles in the Chahar Borjak District of Nimroz province on the Afghan-Pakistani border on Tuesday, killing all insurgents on board, Nimroz Governor, Ghulam Dastgir Azad said.

The militants were heading to launch an offensive on an Afghan border police station while the US jet fighters dropped bombs on the vehicles, Governor Azad further said.

US troops were not available to comment on the bombing.

The governor of the remote Afghan province added that no civilian casualties occurred in the air raid which, according to him, took place in a non-residential area.

The provincial Police Chief Gen Abdul Jabar Pardeli said the air strike was a major blow in the Taliban network in the relatively stable Nimroz, comparing to the neighbouring provinces of Helmand and Farah.

Nimroz province, bordering Pakistan in the south and Iran in the west, have seen a wave of Taliban-led insurgency over the past one year.

Afghan officials say that Taliban insurgents have been trying to expand their influence in Nimroz province.

Taliban militants are present at large groups in the districts of Dil Aram, Kashrod, Chahar Borjak and Gang, according to officials.

Taliban have not made any comments over the claims.

#2  two points

1. geography. It looks to me like there is a real effort to clean up the provinces with light to moderate taliban presence, like Konduz, Nimruz, etc ahead of the hardest provinces in the East. While at the same time maintaining momentum in the SOuth, in Helmand and Kandahar. Nimruz hits both aspects.

2. ROE - Air power is still being used. But more carefully (non residential area, no civilians hit)

Syrian captain, 7 pirates killed in hijack attempt
[Iran Press TV Latest] Pirates have killed the Syrian captain of a Panama-flagged ship off the coast of Somalia, in a failed attempt to hijack the vessel.

The bandits boarded the Barwaqo near Mogadishu's port on Thursday, but were met with fierce resistance from the captain of the vessel, a Press TV correspondent reported.

"The pirates killed the captain after he refused to turn the ship. Usually, we send police when commercial ships draw near the port but the pirates were already on board and opened fire injuring one policeman," Abdiasis Hassan, a Somali Minister for ports, was quoted by Reuters as saying.

African Union peacekeeping troops and Somali police rescued the ship and managed to kill seven pirates and sink one of the boats used by the bandits, officials told Press TV.

"The captain was a Syrian and his body is at the port now," Ahmed Abdi, a port official, told Reuters.

Bangladesh
3 held for JMB link
[Bangla Daily Star] Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday arrested three people at Shantipur under Matiranga upazila of the district for their alleged involvement with the outlawed militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

The arrestees were identified as Mohammad Delwar Hossain, 40, son of Mohammad Idris Miah of Kishoreganj, his associate Mohammad Zahid, 25, of Comilla, and Mohammad Yunus Miah, 18, son of Mohammad Saru Miah.

Locals said Delwar came to Shantipur from Kishoreganj about 18 months ago and started poultry business renting a shop from Saru Miah. Zahid often used to visit him there.

Matiranga police sources said a team of Rab-7 personnel raided Shantipur, an area 60km from Khagrachhari district headquarters, around 5:00am yesterday and arrested the three on charge of their link with JMB.

The arrestees were later taken to the Chittagong Rab office.

Feds: Suspect hit beauty stores for bomb supplies
An Afghan immigrant who received explosives training from al-Qaida went from one beauty supply store to another, buying up large quantities of hydrogen peroxide and nail-polish remover, in a chilling plot to build bombs for attacks on U.S. soil, authorities charged Thursday.

Najibullah Zazi, a 24-year-old shuttle driver at the Denver airport, was indicted in New York on charges of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. Investigators found bomb-making instructions on his computer's hard drive and said Zazi used a hotel room in Colorado to try to cook up explosives a few weeks ago before a trip to New York.

During the summer, Zazi and three unidentified associates bought "unusually large quantities" of hydrogen peroxide and acetone -- a flammable solvent found in nail-polish remover -- from beauty supply stores in the Denver area, prosecutors said.

A second law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation said associates of Zazi visited Colorado from New York to help him buy the chemicals. The official said they used stolen credit cards to make the purchases and then returned to New York. ...

How Using Imam in Terror Inquiry Backfired on Police

By WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM and AL BAKER
Published: September 22, 2009

Current and former police and federal officials said that the effort on Sept. 10 to enlist the imam, Ahmad Wais Afzali, was undertaken by detectives from the Intelligence Division. They showed him pictures of the central suspect and three other men, some of the officials said.

In the subsequent hours, Mr. Afzali spoke both with the suspect, Mr. Zazi, a Denver airport shuttle bus driver, and his father. Court papers say he told the younger Mr. Zazi, who had driven from Colorado to Queens on Sept. 9 and 10, that the authorities had been looking for him.

New York Police Official in Terror Unit Is Removed

By WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM and AL BAKER
Published: September 23, 2009

The New York Police Department has removed a senior official from one of its two sometimes competing anti terrorism units, after it played a role in disrupting a sensitive federal terrorism investigation, current and former police officials said on Wednesday. He was replaced by a top official from the other unit.

The investigation was disrupted two weeks ago when detectives from one of the units, the Intelligence Division, sought assistance from a Queens imam who then alerted the central suspect in the case to the inquiry

Is the imam free? I wonder.

Algerian seized with Abu Zubaydah loses habeas case
A federal judge has upheld as lawful the indefinite detention of an Algerian accused of being an al Qaeda bomb maker, raising the tally of U.S. government victories in Guantanamo habeas corpus lawsuits to eight.

In contrast, 30 detainees here have won their challenges since the U.S. Supreme Court established the right of Guantanamo captives to sue for their freedom in June 2008.

In the latest case made public, U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer ruled for the detention of Sufiyan Barhoumi, 36, in a two-page decision dated Sept. 3. Her full ruling was still classified Friday.

The military says Barhoumi was captured among a multinational band of al Qaida loyalists in a Pakistani raid on a terrorist safe house in Faisalabad in March 2002.

The key capture of that raid was the alleged arch-terrorist known as Abu Zubaydah, Zayn Abdeen al Husseini, who was spirited off to custody at a secret site and CIA interrogation that, according to leaked accounts, systematically humiliated him to break his will -- for example, by confining him to a dog kennel.

Barhoumi and several others were sent to Guantanamo and charged with war crimes for allegedly training with al Qaeda, setting up a bomb-making shop and going on a $1,000 shopping mission in Faisalabad to buy materiel for roadside bombs to resist the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.

Barhoumi had appeared at an earlier effort to stage military commissions with part of his hand blown off from a training exercise years before his capture.

The Barhoumi ruling was the first by Collyer in the 200 or so Guantanamo cases at various stages in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. Six other judges ruled in the previous 37 decisions.

It was also a significant development in the now stalled effort to restart the war court here even as President Barack Obama has pledged to close the prison camps by mid-January.

Among the 30 detainees whom federal judges have ordered released were two long-held captives that Pentagon prosecutors had sought to put before a military tribunal war crimes:

Man accused of trying to bomb Dallas building
A 19-year-old Jordanian man living in Texas was arrested Thursday on charges he intended to bomb a downtown Dallas skyscraper, federal officials said.

Hosam Maher Husein Smadi was arrested after placing what he believed to be a car bomb outside the 60-story Fountain Place office tower Thursday, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office in Dallas. The decoy device was given to him by an undercover FBI agent, the statement said.

Smadi was charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Federal officials said the case has no connection with the major terrorism investigation under way in Colorado and New York or the arrest Thursday of a man facing charges in a similar plot in Springfield, Ill.
Another Muslim mass murderer are popping out of the woodwork? Common as cockroaches they are.
Smadi drove to Dallas on Thursday, met one of the undercover agents and then drove to the targeted building, the FBI agent wrote. Smadi then allegedly drove a vehicle with the device into the parking garage beneath the building, parked it and attempted to detonate the bomb by setting the device's timer and flipping its power switch.

Smadi met again with the undercover agent, who drove several blocks away and Smadi dialed a cell phone he was led to believe would detonate the car bomb, according to the affidavit.

The case is unrelated to that against Najibullah Zazi, a 24-year-old shuttle driver at the Denver airport also indicted in New York on charges of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. It was also unrelated to the case against Michael C. Finton, who was accused of planning to bomb the federal courthouse in Springfield, Ill, White said.
Another one? What is the score? Three horrific islamic mass murder plots stopped this week.
In the Illinois case, a 29-year-old man who idolized American-born Taliban soldier John Walker Lindh was arrested after attempting to detonate what he thought was a bomb inside a van outside a federal courthouse, officials said.
Unpaid parking ticket?
Michael C. Finton, also known as Talib Islam, was arrested and charged in a criminal complaint with one count of attempting to murder federal officers or employees and trying to detonate a weapon of mass destruction.

The right wingers told us if Obama was elected FBI and other agencies would no longer
be able to protect us. Evidently not the case.

And of course Bush always distinguished between the mass of the muslim world and the minority of terrorists and their supporters. BHO's initiatives are aimed at winning over the fence sitters, not at the hardcore jihadis. Whether he is succeeding at winning over the fence sitters is a legitimate debate (I think he is succeeding far less than many of his stary eyed advocates promised) but it doesnt really have anything to do with terror cells like this.

Man arrested in alleged attempt to bomb Dallas skyscraper
Is it the phase of the moon?
Federal authorities arrested a 19-year-old Jordanian citizen whom they said placed an inactive car bomb today at Fountain Place, a 60-story skyscraper in downtown Dallas. Hosam Maher Husein Smadi has repeatedly voiced his intent to serve Osama bin Laden and al-Qa'ida and commit "violent Jihad," authorities said in a prepared statement.
Welcome to Supermax, Hosam ...
"Today's arrest of Hosam Maher Husein Smadi underscores the FBI's unwavering commitment to bring to justice persons who attempt to bring harm to citizens of this country and significant danger to this community," special FBI agent in charge Robert E. Casey, Jr. said in the statement. "Smadi made a decision to act to commit a significant conspicuous act of violence under his banner of 'self Jihad.'"

Authorities said that Smadi was under continuous FBI surveillance. Federal agents posed as members of an al-Qa'ida sleeper cell. Smadi, who was in the U.S. illegally, allegedly told them that he came to the country specifically to commit "Jihad for the sake of God."
In the US illegally. Planning to commit acts of terrorism. Do we finally get a Border Patrol and ICE worthy of us or do we keep the current clowns in charge?
According to authorities, Smadi identified potential Dallas targets in June and allegedly scoped out Fountain Place in July. Authorities said that Smadi lived and worked in Italy, about 45 miles south of Dallas.

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert said city officials were notified of the impending arrest beforehand. "We were clearly communicated to that there was not going to be a danger to anybody," Leppert said. "There's a good working relationship between the police and the FBI. This is an example of that."

Leppert mentioned that there was another terrorism arrest in Springfield today. Regarding the arrests in Dallas, Denver, New York City and Springfield, he said, "It's a comment on the world we live in. All of us need to be vigilant."

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, an undercover FBI agent first came across Smadi in an online group of extremists. Smadi stood out to authorities because of an alleged "vehement intention to actually conduct terror attacks in the United States."

Undercover agents communicated with Smadi more than 60 times, according to the affidavit. All conversations were in Arabic, which the affidavit says is Smadi's native language.

"In the name of God, the Gracious and the Merciful, this is my vow to you, my brother, that I am ready," Smadi allegedly told undercover FBI agents. "And if you were a lover of Jihad as I am, then, by God, I am ready for the Jihadi life."

Illinois man charged in plot to bomb federal offices
WASHINGTON, Sept 24 (Reuters) - An Illinois man was ordered held on Thursday on charges he tried to blow up a federal building in the state capital, a case unrelated to the New York terrorism plot.

Michael Finton, also known as Talib Islam, was arrested in Springfield, Illinois, and charged with attempted murder of federal officers or employees and trying to use a weapon of mass destruction, charges that carry a life sentence.

"Fortunately, a coordinated undercover law enforcement effort was able to thwart his efforts and ensure no one was harmed," David Kris, assistant Attorney General for National Security, said in a statement.

Finton was arrested on Wednesday in Springfield as he used a cell phone to try to detonate the bomb he believed was inside a van he had just parked outside the federal building.
Bet they have video of him squeezing the buttons ...
Appearing in a courtroom on Thursday in the same building he is accused of targeting, Finton waived his right to a detention hearing. U.S. Magistrate Judge Byron Cudmore appointed a public defender to represent Finton and ordered him held pending an indictment by a grand jury.

Finton said he worked part-time as a restaurant cook, according to the State Journal-Register newspaper.

The criminal complaint said Finton, 29, converted to Islam while in prison on other charges. It said he idolized an American who allied with the Taliban, John Walker Lindh, drawing the attention of law enforcement authorities.
Idolized a fool who was spectacularly unsuccessful? Sounds about right ...
After returning from a trip to Saudi Arabia in 2008, Finton told an individual, who turned out to be a law enforcement source, that he wanted to fight against Israelis in the Gaza Strip, according to the complaint.

In early 2009, "it appeared that Finton was on the verge of taking action, so it was decided to proactively provide him with an opportunity for action that we controlled, rather than merely hoping to be able to find out and stop him," according to a government affidavit. He was introduced to an undercover FBI agent who began working with him to plot an attack, but Finton was repeatedly told he could walk away at any time, according to the Justice Department.

Eventually, Finton picked the federal building in Springfield as the target and on Wednesday he parked a van he believed carried one ton of explosives at the location, the complaint said.

The Justice Department said the case was unrelated to another suspected terrorism plot in New York, where an Afghan-born man was charged with conspiring to launch a bombing attack in the United States using chemicals that form triacetone triperoxide.

US military in Virginia targeted by NC terror suspects
More at Reuters.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Two North Carolina terrorism suspects plotted to kill U.S. military personnel and one of them obtained maps of a Marine Corps base in Virginia to plan an attack, prosecutors said Thursday. "These additional charges hammer home the grim reality that today's homegrown terrorists are not limiting their violent plans to locations overseas, but instead are willing to set their sights on American citizens and American targets, right here at home," U.S. Attorney George Holding said in a statement. Seven men are awaiting trial in the case, and investigators say an eighth suspect is believed to be in Pakistan. The FBI has said agents seized some two dozen guns and more than 27,000 rounds of ammunition from Boyd's home. The superseding indictment says Boyd possessed the armor-piercing ammunition "to attack the Americans."

Terror suspect bought, cooked bomb-making materials in Aurora, CO
The father of an Afghanistan-born terror suspect was released from jail today and may be called upon to testify against his son in New York City. Mohammed Zazi was released just after 1 p.m. from Denver federal court and reported to a separate federal building where pre-trial services are located. Federal officials declined to say where he will be living. It was unclear where he would stay because landlords have moved to evict him and other relatives from their apartment.
The American version of bulldozing the housing compound.
He will be monitored electronically, and must check in with pre-trial release officials regularly. He did not respond to questions from reporters as he was released.

Najibullah Zazi, 24, appeared this morning in a Denver courtroom for a scheduled hearing on whether he could be detained without bond. After the indictment was unsealed in New York, the Denver federal court hearing was postponed until Friday and will become a hearing to remove Zazi to the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of New York. If convicted, Zazi could face life in prison.
No perpetual virgins or pearl-faced boys to serve him in Paradise following martyrdom. Only a lifetime locked away from his lovely Afghan wife in Peshawar, wondering if she remained loyal.
Investigators now have pieced together a picture in which Zazi's father Mohammed Zazi, 53, moved from New York to Arapahoe County to join his son in July 2009. The two moved into an apartment on East Smoky Hill Road, the document said.

During July and August, "Zazi and others associated with Zazi purchased unusually large quantities of hydrogen peroxide and acetone products from beauty supply stores," the document said. Surveillance videos and receipts indicated he bought six bottles of Liquid Developer Clairoxide from one beauty supply store in Aurora. That product contains high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide.

Records from a nearby hotel in Aurora indicated that Zazi checked into a suite on August 28, the document said - a suite that included a stove. The FBI investigators found that Zazi rented the same hotel suite in Aurora on Sept. 6 and 7, where subsequent FBI testing revealed the presence of chemical residue in a vent above the stove, the document said.

The government in the documents also said that "individuals associated with Zazi purchased unusual quantities of hydrogen and acetone products in July, August and September 2009 from three different beauty supply stores in and around Aurora." One bought a one-gallon container of a product containing hydrogen peroxide and a bottle of acetone. Another bought acetone in September. Another bought bottles of Ion Sensitive Scalp Developer, according to the document.

Bomb-making notes later found on Zazi's laptop, seized from his rental car by police in New York, included information about heating bomb components to make them highly concentrated, the document said. "A lawfully-authorized search" of the laptop indicated that, on Sept. 8, "Zazi searched the internet for locations of a home improvement store" in Queens and then searched a store's website for muriatic acid, a diluted version of hydrochloric acid - before renting a car.
From the comment thread:
by Boscoboss on Today, 12:08 pm
Think this is related to those very curious rash of break-ins in Aurora a few weeks ago? Folks breaking into beauty parlors, barbers, nail salons?

I could not figure why folks would bother breaking into such places at night where there would be little or no cash kept overnight.
More here:
Zazi was looking for "urgent" help in the past two weeks to make explosives, an indictment charged Thursday. The document says that on Sept. 6 and 7, Zazi tried to communicate with another individual "seeking to correct mixtures of ingredients to make explosives."

"Each communication," the papers say, was "more urgent than the last."

A second, unrelated indictment unsealed Thursday in the same court charged a Brooklyn man with supporting terrorism in what authorities say is an investigation. An indictment alleges Betim Kaziu traveled to Pakistan this year to try to receive training from a militant group linked to al-Qaida, and tried to go to Afghanistan and Iraq to fight against U.S. forces there. Kaziu was to be arraigned later Thursday. Prosecutors did not have the name of his attorney.
And final detailsfrom the NY Post:
The handwritten notes on Zazi's computer contain details for an explosive known as Triacetone Triperoxide -- the same used in 2001 by "shoe-bomber" Richard Reid and in 2005 in the London train bombings.
Oooooh, Mother of Satan confirmed. No wonder the Feds are looking for the stash with such concentration. That's touchy stuff.
Federal authorities claim that Zazi was potentially close to making a bomb after "acetone residue" was found in a vent above his stove, according to court papers.

#1  Think this is related to those very curious rash of break-ins in Aurora a few weeks ago? Folks breaking into beauty parlors, barbers, nail salons? I could not figure why folks would bother breaking into such places at night where there would be little or no cash kept overnight.

Are there other pockets of petty crime around the country? A 26 foot truck and all those backpacks sound like quite a big plot in need of lots of precursors, especially if a coast to coast attack was planned.

US drone attack kills 10 in Pakistan: officials
Update on yesterday's drone zap count.
A US drone attack on Thursday killed 10 militants from a network fighting Western troops in Afghanistan at their compound in Pakistan's tribal belt, officials said.

"One missile fired by a US drone hit the house of Afghan national Ahmad Afghani," said a Pakistani security official.

There were unconfirmed reports that one the sons of former Soviet resistance commander in Afghanistan, Jalaluddin Haqqani, is called Ahmad. "We are investigating whether it was the son or not," a security official told AFP after the attack in Dandy Darpa Khel area, five kilometres (three miles) northwest of Miransha in the North Waziristan tribal district.

The targeted building acted as an office where militants would come to receive orders and rest between bouts of fighting across the border in Afghanistan, local residents and Pakistani intelligence officials said.

Taliban kill seven pro-govt lashkar members in Bannu
Suspected Taliban killed seven members of a pro-government tribal lashkar near North Waziristan on Thursday, officials and local residents said.

The victims of the Taliban ambush in Janikhel area in Frontier Region Bannu included tribal chief Malik Sultan, who was raising a militia against the Taliban in the region.

"All seven were killed on the spot," Bannu District Police Officer Iqbal Marwat told reporters.

In retaliation, members of the laskhar killed nine Taliban. Two khasadar personnel were also killed in the skirmishes, APP reported.

Separately, Taliban killed seven tribal heads, according to sources. Their bodies were found from various parts of Bannu on Thursday, sources said, adding that investigation was underway.

Saddled with a traditional standing army that lacks adequate equipment and counter-insurgency specialists, one of the country's answers to counter Taliban has been to arm and support tribesmen to protect communities in the northwest. A blistering assault in and around Swat was launched last April after the Taliban moved further towards Islamabad following a two-year insurgency to enforce sharia.

Iraq
Three Iraqi policemen shot dead in Mosul
[Iran Press TV Latest] At least three Iraqi policemen have lost their lives in the latest string of terrorist attacks targeting security agents in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

In the first incident, two members of Iraqi police personnel were gunned down on Thursday when unidentified assailants opened fire at their checkpoint on Ghazi street in central Mosul. The armed men fled the scene unscathed after the incident, according to eyewitnesses.

Security forces cordoned off the area after the attack and launched an investigation to look into motives behind the terrorist move.

Gunmen, meanwhile, broke into the house of an Iraqi police officer in western Mosul city and sprayed him with bullets.

An Iraqi police source, seeking anonymity, told Voices of Iraq news agency that the attack took place Thursday in al-Ibor district in the west of Mosul. He added that the attackers managed to escape to an unknown place.

A city with a volatile ethnic mix of Sunni Arabs, Kurds and Christians, Mosul remains the scene of frequent shootings and bombings, and the US commanders regard the once cosmopolitan city as the last urban bastion of al-Qaeda in Iraq. The capital city of Iraq's Nineveh province is situated some 396 km (250 miles) northwest of Baghdad.

#1  The Iraqi forces still have a long conflict ahead of them, but it appears they are mostly able to deal with it themselves.

#2  Iraqi army as well, LH. It's been a tough nut to crack but imho we have done better w/them then we thought we could. Every month we seem to be incrementally pulling more and more out of the scene, which is a good thing.
