Afghanistan
Crackshot squaddie kills Taliban warlord from one mile away
Glad they're on our side. Well done, gentlemen!
Corporal Christopher Reynolds shot the high profile Afghan drug baron dead during ferocious fighting, notching up the longest range confirmed kill in Afghanistan.

The 25-year-old waited on a shop rooftop in southern Afghanistan for three days to take out the top-level Taliban commander - called Musa - who co-ordinated dozens of attacks against British and US soldiers.

Cpl Reynolds, of 3 Scots, The Black Watch, has already killed 32 other Taliban fighters during some of the hardest fighting of the Afghan campaign.

His comrade, Sergeant Daniel Buist, carried out another amazing attack on the Taliban. He killed one of their snipers - who spoke with a Birmingham accent - who was shooting from a tiny hole in a wall more than half a mile away.

Cpl Reynolds, from Dalgety Bay, in Fife, took out his target from more than 1500 metres away. He said: "We were in a bazaar in Babaji for days in some very heavy fighting and had taken up a position on a shop roof to observe the surrounding area. From the first few minutes after we landed, we came into contact with the enemy.

"We were taking fire all the time. We were observing down the valley and I saw a group of five Taliban. I identified one straightaway as the commander because I watched him through the scope and when he spoke on the radio, the other one would do what he said.

"I saw that he had a weapon, an AK47. We did all the calculations for range, windspeed and all that. I have to admit the first round landed next to him. We were so far away that he didn't even realise he was being shot at.

"We changed our aim and when I took into account different factors like the trajectory of the bullet, my gun scope was actually aiming at the top of a doorway. I fired and the bullet went off, coming down and hitting him in the chest.

"He dropped straight away into the arms of a fighter behind him. The guy just panicked and dropped the leader and ran away.

"He had been given a lead sleeping tablet. I was quite proud of that shot - it is the longest recorded kill in Afghanistan. I am going to use that fact as a chat-up line in the pub when I get back home."

Lance Corporal David Hatton, 20, from Castlemilk, serves alongside Cpl Reynolds. He said: "We had been in position for three days when he made that shot. I was the spotter on that job and I was giving him the information about the target.

"He did a top job that day - but we are all sick about him going on about it and telling us what a great shot he is."

Another Scots soldier in the same unit, Sergeant Daniel Buist, carried out another amazing feat using a state-of-the-art Javelin missile launcher which costs pounds 70,000 each time its fired. Sergeant Buist used his Javelin to kill a sniper who was shooting through a tiny hole half a mile away in the bandit country around Babaji.

He said: "The guy was getting more accurate with every shot and his bullets were starting to land among my guys' feet. We could hear through our communications gear that he was speaking English at times. It was thought that he could have been a Brit as he may have had what sounded like a Brummie accent.

"We got in touch with our snipers who told us that he was using a wall with a hole dug through it, to shoot at us. He had made a mistake when he fired and a puff of smoke appeared from the wall. I could see the shape of his head and shoulders and the outline of his gun.

"I fired and the missile went straight through the hole that the Taliban had cut out the wall to fire from.

"It was a real bullseye. The missile never even did any damage to the other wall - it just took out our target.

"A patrol later went to the position and confirmed the kill. There was nothing left but a lot of blood and rags. The remains had been dragged away by other Taliban. It can be gruesome but I had to stop that guy from taking out my men."

Does this make him a Texan? I think so. They take a while to get sick about stories like this, and they have lots of bars to tell stories in.

Now, if the Cpl. is also a fisherman . . . .

British soldiers killed in Afghan attacks
Duty. Honour. Country. And always, our thanks.
KABUL -- New attacks killed three British troops, eight Afghan security personnel and a civilian, authorities said Friday, as presidential candidates pushed on with rallies for elections in two weeks.

The three British servicemen were killed when their vehicle was hit by an explosion and small arms fire during a patrol Thursday north of Lashkar Gah, capital of the troubled southern province of Helmand. A fourth soldier remains in a "critical condition", the British Ministry of Defence said Friday.

Some 26 British troops have been killed since the start of July and the spike in deaths has revived debate in Britain about its involvement in Afghanistan and the standard of equipment available to protect troops.

Afghan police were also struck on Thursday, with a bomb planted in a road killing five in the southern province of Kandahar, which adjoins Helmand, district governor Abdul Jabar told AFP. Other attacks on Thursday and Friday killed two more policemen, a security guard escorting a logistics convoy for NATO forces and a civilian, authorities said.

Portugal to resettle 2 Syrians now at Gitmo
They're all yours. We have more if you want them ...
Portugal announced Friday that it will resettle two Syrian men now held as detainees at the U.S. Navy base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, following France and Ireland in the humanitarian gesture. The six-paragraph statement posted on Portugal's Minister of Foreign Affairs website did not name the two men.

But the joint foreign and interior ministries announcement linked the move to a broad European Union agreement to help the White House empty the prison camps that had been a source of tension between Europe and the Bush administration. It cast U.S. closure of the camps as "a milestone in revitalizing the transatlantic relationship and a victory for all those who advocate and promote respect for human rights in the fight against terrorism.''
Yeah, yeah, whatever, and remember, no give-backs ...
The military holds fewer than a dozen Syrian men among its 229 foreigners at Guantánamo, including Abdul Rahim Abdul Razak al Janko, 31, whose detention was ruled unlawful in June by a federal judge in Washington, D.C.
Ship him to Zimbabwe or Burma. It'll spite the judge, and in six months Abdul will be begging to come back ...
President Barack Obama has ordered the prison camps emptied by Jan. 22 and Europe has been seen as key to a broad strategy that seeks to repatriate some, resettle others in third countries and put more on trial in either military or civilian courts.

France has already taken in Algerian Bosnian Lakhdar Boumediene, who, like Janko, won an unlawful detention suit heard by Leon in a Washington court. Ireland interviewed two Uzbek citizens at the prison camps last month.

The State Department confirmed the agreement Friday afternoon. "We are very grateful for the efforts of the government of Portugal . . . to join our effort to close Guantánamo through this humanitarian gesture and for the leadership it exhibited in achieving a common European position on resettling Guantánamo detainees,'' said deputy spokesman Robert Wood.

Lisbon's announcement said that Obama's special envoy, Ambassador Daniel Fried, had presented a specific proposal to Portugal to take the two men. In response, it said, the government had balanced humanitarian and foreign relations considerations along with national security to forge the agreement, along with the prospects for a successful absorption of the two specific men selected for special entry visas. It did not specify whether the visas would allow the men to travel abroad, or simply remain in Portugal.

The latest resettlement plans come as Fried is reportedly still negotiating with the Pacific island nation of Palau to provide asylum to some Uighur Muslims from China held in a prerelease camp at Guantánamo. It also comes as the White House is grappling with meeting the deadline as well as recent new congressional limitations and reporting requirements imposed on any future transfers, either abroad or to U.S. soil.

#1  It's only fair if the Euros want us to empty Gitmo that they should try to resettle their fair share. Let the Euros pay to put these clowns on welfare. Let the Euros die when the terrorists resume their jihad. Then maybe next time they'll keep their mouths shut.

#2  President Barack Obama has ordered the prison camps emptied by Jan. 22

"President" O'Bumble may not even be in office by January 22nd, especially if he continues to act more like a dictator than an elected member of a republican form of government. He may end up "serving" the remainder of his term in SuperMax.

Taliban Power Struggle Claims Hakeemullah Mehsud?
Firing reportedly occurred during a meeting of the banned group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leaders, and Hakmiullah Mehsud, the spokesman of the TTP, was wounded or killed, local TV channel reported Saturday.
This keeps up and I'm going to need a new ululator ...
Armed clash was reported to have occurred between two groups of banned TTP during the Shura (council) meeting of its leaders to elect a new chief, and Hakmiullah Mehsud, the spokesman of the TTP was wounded or killed, the private TV channel DAWN News reported.

Pakistan's most wanted militant commander, Baitullah Mehsud, was reportedly killed along with his wife and bodyguards by United States missile attack on Wednesday. The other leaders of the group have held meeting to elect a new chief since Friday.

Analysts said the death of Baitullah Mehsud will deal a major blow to the TTP as its division in splinter groups seems imminent.

[The News (Pak) Top Stories] A Taliban commander killed six militants before being shot dead by another insurgent in Batara area in Chagharzai late Thursday.

Shah Zar opened fire on his colleagues when they were offering Maghrib prayers, killing six of them on the spot, while he himself was killed by another militant, deputed to guard them.

The militants later killed son of Shah Zar who was stated to be a militant as well.

Shah Zar was said to be a close relative of Haji Khalil and both hailed from the same village. Haji Khalil was killed after killing two of the Taliban attackers and injuring three others on July 29.

New TTP chief being chosen
New TTP chief: Meanwhile, intelligence officials and Taliban sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, have said that Taliban commanders were
drawing straws
meeting in the Tribal Areas on Friday to choose a successor. It was unclear when they might reach a decision.
"Rock-paper-scissors, first man to 1,059!"
Three Pakistani intelligence officials said the likeliest successor
needed to have a small thermal signature and very, very keen ears
was Mehsud's deputy, Hakeemullah Mehsud, a commander known for recruiting and training suicide bombers. Two other prominent possibilities, the officials said, were
checking flight schedules to Mogadishu and finding someone to watch the goats
Azmatullah Mehsud and Waliur Rehman, also close associates of Mehsud.

At least 19 people were killed and more than 18 injured in a gunfight between pro and anti--Baitullah Mehsud groups in Tank district. 'Militants plotting attacks in New Delhi arrested'
Indian authorities claimed to have arrested two suspected members of the outlawed Hizbul Mujahideen on Friday for allegedly planning attacks in New Delhi.

The suspects, identified as Javed Ahmed and Ashiq Ali, were taken into custody on Thursday night, said police spokesman Rajan Bhagat. "The two men are residents of [Indian-held] Kashmir and had been trained in Pakistan by the Hizbul Mujahideen," senior police official PN Aggarwal told reporters. The arrests came amid tightened security ahead of India's independence day on August 15. Hundreds of extra police and paramilitary forces have been deployed across New Delhi following intelligence reports suggesting a series of possible attacks. "We were working in close coordination with intelligence agencies which ultimately resulted in the arrests," a senior police officer said.

Iraq
IP Arrest Suspected Terrorist Commander
Iraqi Police (IP) from the Basrah Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, along with U.S. advisors, arrested a suspected terrorist commander during an Iraqi-led operation in southern Iraq, Aug. 5, acting under the authority of a warrant issued by the Basrah Court.

During the early-morning mission, court documents indicate the IP arrested the suspected insurgent leader in accordance with the Republic of Iraq’s terrorism laws.

The suspected terrorist commander of the Basrah-based insurgent group is allegedly responsible for conducting and coordinating improvised explosive device and indirect fire attacks in the area.

The detainment of this individual may reduce the insurgent organization’s effectiveness to conduct attacks against the local populace, Iraqi Security Forces and Government of Iraq officials living and working in the area.

Gunman arrested while planting IED south of Kirkuk
Aswat al-Iraq: A combined force from the Kurdish security agency Asayesh arrested a gunman while planting an improvised explosive device (IED ) south of Kirkuk on Thursday, an Asayesh information official said. "The gunman was emplacing his charge on the main road between the district of Laylan and the district of al-Touz, (25 km) south of Kirkuk city," Firhad Mohammed told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Asayesh or Asayish (Arabic for security) is a Kurdish organization, created in September 1993. It is referred to as an "intelligence agency", "security force","security service", "security police", "secret service", "secret police", or just "Kurdish police". Related to Barazani, it also acts under the command of the Kurdish National Assembly (parliament) and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

"Initial investigations with the gunman, of the name of Raad Abdullah Ibrahim, showed that he is a local resident of Kirkuk and belongs to al-Naqshabandiya group," he added.

Al-Naqshabandiya, an armed group self-proclaimed after 2003 and composed of officers and soldiers of the former Iraqi army, is loyal to Izzat Ibrahim al-Dori, the vice president of the former Iraqi regime, and active mainly in Kirkuk and its environs.

Dori, who was born in 1942, used to be the vice chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council during the former regime's time. He ranks 6th on a U.S. forces' pack of cards of 55 most wanted persons after their invasion of Baghdad in April 2003, pledging a reward of $10 million for information leading to capturing him.

Dori, the King of Clubs on this pack, had been reportedly arrested more than once, perhaps the recent of which was in April 2008. The dissolved Baath Party had announced on November 11, 2005 that Dori has died, only to deny the reports shortly after.

Armed group distributes leaflets calling to besiege Sinjar
Aswat al-Iraq: An armed group has distributed leaflets in Ninewa calling to prevent the food supply, the construction material and fuel from entering Sinjar, where most of the Yazidis live, on the pretext of selling these materials to Shiites in Talafar.

The leaflets, distributed in the Sinjar, Baaj and Talafar districts in northwestern Mosul in the past days, came in form of an instigative statement calling for besieging Sinjar.

The leaflets carry the signature of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq, which is considered one of the main armed groups in the region before waging the rule of law security plan in Ninewa two years ago.

The statement, received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency, called to siege Sinjar and prevent food supplies, constructional materials and fuels from entering the city as it represents the main provider for the Shiite-dominated Talafar.

Mayor of Sinjar, Dakheel Qassem Hassoun, played down the effects of armed groups in the region, asserting that their attempts will not manage to destabilize the district.

Mosul mosque blast death toll up to 38, wounded to 90
Aswat al-Iraq: Casualties from Friday's earlier car bomb blast near a Shiite mosque in Mosul rose to 38 deaths and 90 wounded, a Ninewa police source said.

"A suicide bomber detonated his explosive vehicle near worshippers who have just getting out of the Shiite mosque of Shrifan in the northern Mosul area of al-Rashidiya, after the congregational Friday prayers, leaving such a large number of casualties," the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Earlier, a security source had told Aswat al-Iraq that the blast left 30 deaths and 70 others wounded.

The source had said that the casualties were most likely to rise due to the powerfulness of the explosion that caused severe damage to the surrounding area, and many of the wounded being in a critical condition.

Iraq attacks kill at least 52
Baghdad -- A series of attacks largely targeting Shiite Muslims killed at least 52 people today, most of them in a powerful car bombing at a mosque on the northern edge of the volatile city of Mosul.

Authorities said most of the 39 victims at the mosque were Shiite Turkmens, a minority group that has frequently been targeted by the Sunni Arab militant group Al Qaeda in Iraq to inflame sectarian and ethnic tensions.

The massive bomb exploded as worshipers were leaving the mosque in the village of Shraikan after attending Friday prayers, officials said. The bombing, which demolished 10 nearby homes, is certain to raise tensions between Kurds, who control the area, and the Sunni Arab administration of Ninevah province, of which Mosul is the capital.

Hamas holds Fatah officials in Gaza
GAZA, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Islamic Hamas movement on Friday summoned and held several Fatah leaders in the Gaza Strip, officials from the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' party said. According to a statement by Fatah movement, Hamas has summoned the Fatah activists and has been holding them for more than three hours. Among the detainees was Ibrahim Abu al-Najja, Fatah representative in the Hamas-controlled Gaza.
The heart (urp) bleeds ...
Faisal Abu Shahla, a Fatah lawmaker, confirmed that Hamas has summoned a number of Fatah officials Friday afternoon. "We condemn this act and Hamas should shoulder the responsibility for their well-being," he said.

The incident occurred on the fourth day of Fatah's general convention which is taking place in the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

Hamas has prevented some 400 Gaza-based Fatah officials from traveling to join their movement's first conference in 20 years, citing a Fatah-led crackdown against Hamas supporters in the West Bank. On Friday, the delegates in Bethlehem said they have reached a mechanism to enable the Gaza-based members to vote in the internal elections Fatah will be holding on the last day of the conference.

Three Thai rangers wounded in clash with terrorists
Three government paramilitary rangers were wounded early Saturday following an exchange of gunfire with terrorists suspected insurgents in Si Sakhon district of Narathiwat province, police said. The incident occurred following a bomb explosion detonated by terrorists presumed insurgents using a cell phone, and as the security team responded, it was ambushed by the insurgents, police said. An exchange of gunfire took place for over five minutes before the attackers retreated. The wounded rangers were taken to hospital for treatment, according to police.

The authorities said the bomb was planted with an aim to attack government security forces who would travel to the area following Friday night’s attack on an army outpost in which a soldier was killed and another wounded. Police said the homemade five kilogramme bomb was built in a metal box. Some 20 spent M-16 cartridges were found scattered in the rubber plantation which were believed to be from the assailants weapons.

In another incident, a marine bomb disposal unit at about 7.30 am retrieved and defused a bomb weighing 35-40 kilogrammes hidden inside a sewerage conduit in Narathiwat’s Bacho district, police said.

Noordin Top shot dead
[Straits Times] INDONESIAN police have shot dead a man suspected to be leading Islamic militant Noordin Mohammad Top during raids in Central Java and were trying to identify his body, a police source said on Saturday.

Separately, police said they had killed two suspected militants and found up to 500kg of bombs during a raid on a house in the Bekasi area near the capital Jakarta.

Malaysian-born Top is a prime suspect thought to be behind the near simultaneous suicide attacks on two luxury Jakarta hotels last month.

The July 17 attacks on the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton killed nine and wounded 53, including Indonesians and foreigners, and broke a four-year lull when there had been no major attacks after police had arrested hundreds of militants.

Police have launched a series of raids since Friday and the police source, who is close to the investigation into the hotel attacks, told Reuters the man suspected to be Top was killed during a raid on a workshop in Temanggung in Central Java.

'He was shot dead at the workshop in Temanggung,' the source said, adding that raids in the area had led police to the house in Bekasi where bombs had been found.

Police were trying to defuse the bombs and a Reuters correspondent at the scene heard a loud blast from the cordoned off area.

'I think this is very significant. Hopefully the person in Temanggung is Noordin,' said national police spokesman Nanan Soekarna. He said two suspects believed to be involved in recruiting suicide bombers were still on the run.

National Police Chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri said police had captured three men in Central Java and three men in Jakarta during the raids.

He said the bombs appeared to have been prepared for use in a car bomb attack on 'a very particular target", but did not elaborate.
