Afghanistan: Militants killed in coalition raids
(AKI) - The US-led coalition killed more than 10 militants and detained two others during separate raids in Afghanistan, the coalition said on Friday.

The militants were killed in the Tagab district of northeast Kapisa province during a raid on Thursday on a suspected Taliban commander linked to roadside bomb attacks, the coalition said in a statement. "Coalition forces were engaged with small-arms fire from multiple groups of armed militants as they entered a compound. The force returned fire, killing the militants," the statement said.

Separately, coalition troops detained two militants in the eastern Khost province during a raid on the network of Siraj Haqqani, son of warlord Jalaluddin Haqqani.

The announcement came as a US defence official confirmed that two soldiers killed in attacks on Thursday were from the United States, which has about 33,000 soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.

US firm ambushed in Afghanistan, 15 Talibs, 4 guards, 4 civilians killed
At least 23 people were killed when Taliban ambushed a United States security firm convoy in southwestern Afghanistan on Friday. Provincial officials said it was the second attack on the firm in recent days. Provincial Police Chief Khalilullah Rahmani said 15 of the dead were Taliban killed in the fighting that broke out following the ambush.

Rahmani said US Protection and Investigations, a firm involved in escorting supplies for coalition forces, also suffered casualties, but gave no details. "The Taliban attacked the convoy with machineguns. Four vehicles were set on fire," said a provincial official requesting anonymity. He said four Afghan guards and four civilians had been killed in the ambush that took place when the convoy was passing through Bakwa district in Farah province. Another convoy of the security firm had been attacked on Thursday in Kandahar city. Two people had been killed in the attack.

In another incident, the US military said coalition forces had killed more than 10 Taliban and had detained two more during operations in eastern Afghanistan targeting the network of Taliban commander Jalaluddin Haqqani. Two members of Haqqani's team were picked up in Khost province, including one suspected of co-ordinating roadside attacks on coalition and Afghan forces, the US military said in a statement. Haqqani, who was backed by the United States during the war against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, is considered close to Osama Bin Laden.

The military said US forces had also targeted a Taliban commander in Kapisa province, northeast of Kabul, adding that 10 militants had been killed in the fighting. "Coalition forces were engaged with small-arms fire from multiple groups of armed militants as they entered a compound. The force returned fire, killing the militants," said the statement.

9 Filipino sailors freed by pirates
(Xinhua) -- Nine Filipino seamen who were among the 13 crew of a German-owned vessel freed recently by pirates one month after they were hijacked off the Somalia coast, the Philippine government said on Friday.

The spokesman of Department of Foreign Affairs Claro Cristobal said the Filipino sailors were all physically unharmed and in good condition when they were released on Thursday.

German's Antigua-flagged MV BBC Trinidad was seized on Aug. 21 off the unpatrolled Somali coast. The vessel, which was held in the northeastern Somali fishing village of Eyl, has a 13-member crew including a Slovenian captain, 10 Filipinos and two Russians.

Cristobal said his department is still working on the release of 51 other Filipino sailors in six hijacked foreign vessels since July 19 near Somali waters.

Due to the rising number of hostage-taking involving Filipino sailors, the Philippine government has proposed a deployment ban on land and sea-based workers in Somalia to protect them from being taken as hostages.

Under the proposal, the Filipino crews are to be restricted by their contract to "safe sea lanes" identified and certified by the Coalition of Naval Forces operating in the area.

The waters off Somalia and Nigeria are the most pirate-infested in the world, with the International Maritime Bureau reporting 24 attacks in Somalia and 18 in Nigeria between April and June this year.

Somali pirates release German, Japanese ships
Oh, how the money rolls in, rolls in!
Oh, how the money rolls in!

(SomaliNet) A Kenyan maritime organisation said Thursday that Somali pirates have released a German-operated ship and a Japanese tanker seized last month.

Andrew Mwangura of the Kenyan branch of the Seafarers' Assistance Programme said the German's Antigua and Barbuda-flagged MV BBC Trinidad and Japanese MT Irene were seized on August 21 off the unpatrolled Somali coast. "As of now, we have confirmed that the two ships have been released by the pirates," he told AFP from the port town of Mombasa.

The MV BBC Trinidad, which was held in the northeastern Somali fishing village of Eyl, has a 13-member crew: a Slovenian captain, 10 Filipinos and two Russians. "We have got information that 1.1 million dollars was paid for the release of the German ship," said Mwangura, adding that the freighter is headed to Muscat.

Mwangura said the MT Irene, which had 16 Filipinos and three Croatians, was freed from the same village a day after a group of Japanese arrived in Nairobi to boost efforts to release the tanker. "We have reports that they brought ransom and were coordinating its payment," he added.

A ransom of 1.5 million dollars was paid for the Japanese vessel but the information could not immediately be confirmed, sources close to the pirates in the northern Somali breakaway state of Puntland told AFP said.

According to Somali officials and several maritime organisations, Somali pirates are currently holding several foreign ships hostage off the coast of the troubled Horn of Africa country. Maritime experts say many attacks go unreported along Somalia's 3,700 kilometres (2,300 miles) of largely unpatrolled coastline infested by pirates, who operate high-powered speedboats and carry heavy machine guns and rocket launchers.

In June, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution authorising foreign warships to enter Somalia's territorial waters with the government's consent to combat pirates and armed robbery at sea, but it is yet to be implemented.
Typical UN efficiency ...
In recent months, a multinational taskforce based in Djibouti has been patrolling parts of the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, where a pirate mothership is believed to be operating.

#3  Seems to me that Eyl should become Ex. A thousand or so iron bombs would do the trick. Then send a message to every other village and port in Somalia that the same thing will happen if there's even ONE MORE pirate attack. Then follow through when there IS a "next time", because muslimbs are incapable of understanding anything but that fairy tale they believe in.

With a brick, constable defuses bomb
NEW DELHI: A major tragedy was averted when constable Suresh Kumar defused a bomb planted in a dustbin outside Regal cinema in Connaught Place on Saturday.

Dinesh Bhatnagar, a gatekeeper at Regal cinema, said: “The evening show had just begun when we got news of the serial blasts and the theatre was evacuated. I too came out and stood on the road near the main gate. Soon I saw two rag-pickers searching the waste in a dustbin. One of them took out a black polythene bag from the dustbin and told his friend that there was a clock inside it. Beat constable Suresh Kumar who happened to be standing close-by overheard the conversation. He immediately snatched the polythene bag and pulled the rag-picker back.”

Mr. Kumar immediately took out the bomb from the polythene bag, broke the clock with a brick lying nearby and dismantled it. Bomb disposal squads also reached the spot a little later.

#1  You know, depending on the sophistication of the bomb, this is a workable solution. However, as I'm NOT EOD certified or any kind of explosives expert, I'm more than happy to allow the true professionals to decide whether they cut the blue wire or whack it with a brick. I'll be a few blocks away, out of the blast radius.

#2  According to another report...

"Without thinking of the consequence, Suresh immediately broke the black and green wires of the bomb and threw it away. We immediately put sand bags on the bomb," Sharma said.

Pakistan sends fighter jets to tribal region
ISLAMABAD, Sept.13 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on Saturday sent its fighter aircraft to the northwestern tribal region as the U.S.-led coalition forces are increasing cross-border raids, local media reported.

The fighter jets conducted flights in North Waziristan tribal region, News Network International (NNI) news agency said. At least 12 people were killed in North Waziristan in a suspected U.S. missile attack on Friday. The coalition forces are increasing their missile and drone attacks on targets inside Pakistan in recent month, blaming Pakistan's local Taliban for rising insurgency in Afghanistan.

Reports said that U.S. President George W. Bush has authorized U.S. raids against militants inside Pakistan without prior approval from the country. The attacks have also caused many camp follower civilian deaths and triggered mounting anger and criticism across the country.

But Pakistan has repeatedly excluded the operation by foreign forces on its territory. Pakistan's army chief General Ashfaq Kayani on Wednesday issued a harsh-wording statement, criticizing the cross-border attacks by the coalition forces from Afghanistan and vowing to defend the country "at all cost".

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country will be defended at all cost and no external force is allowed to conduct operations inside Pakistan," said Kayani. He said there is no any agreement or understanding with the coalition forces whereby they are allowed to conduct operations on Pakistani soil. Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Friday Pakistan would take up the unilateral strikes "on diplomatic level".

30 dead, 90+ injured as five blasts hit Indian capital
AT least five bombs exploded in quick succession in crowded markets and streets in the heart of India's capital New Delhi on Saturday, killing at least 10 people and injuring scores more, police say.

The Indian Mujahideen militant group, which says it has carried out several major attacks in recent months, sent an email to local television stations saying it was responsible for the blasts.

Police and witnesses said two went off in dustbins in and around Connaught Place, a shopping and dining area popular with tourists and locals in the centre of the city. Others exploded in busy markets around the city, within minutes of each other. "Ten people have died so far," Delhi police commissioner Y.S. Dadwal told reporters, adding that two more bombs were found and defused. "They do not seem to be of very high intensity."

Hundreds of people have been killed in a wave of bombings in India in recent years, with targets ranging from mosques and Hindu temples to trains.

Police say the Indian Mujahideen is an offshoot of the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India, but say local Muslims appear to have been given training and backing from militant groups in neighbouring Pakistan and Bangladesh.
I'm sorry, where again? Pakistain? Bangladesh? Isn't that like, you know, an act of war or something?
One bomb exploded in a newly constructed park in the centre of the Connaught Place roundabout, built above one of the main stations of the Delhi Metro. Another went off in a dustbin near a metro station entrance on a main arterial road leading into the area, housing the offices of several foreign banks and multinational companies.

"Around 6:30 pm we heard a very loud noise, then we saw people running all over the place," said Chanchal Kumar, a witness whose shirt was soaked in blood of several victims he helped shift into ambulances. "There were about 100-200 people around this place," he said.

Other injured people were carried away in police vans while a three-wheeler auto-rickshaw parked near one dustbin was badly damaged, witnesses said. "It was a huge blast," said another witness, Sanjeev Gole. "I was around the corner from the road. I came running down and I saw at least four to five people lying on the road."

Broadcasts showed the aftermath of the explosion in the Ghaffar Market area of Karol Bagh, which is a busy area full of electronics shops and is packed at weekends. Badly damaged cars with windows shattered and mangled motorbikes could be seen along with personal belongings, some of them bloodstained, and abandoned shoes. Wounded people were shown being carried away by rescuers at one site, one leaving a trail of blood on the ground.

Police controlled crowds of onlookers, some people angry that they had failed to prevent the explosions. Hundreds of people milled around the site of the explosions as police tried to cordon off the area.

In July, at least 45 people were killed after a series of bombs ripped through Ahmedabad, the main city of the western state of Gujarat. The attack came a day after bombs killed one woman in the IT hub of Bangalore.

#1  Twenty people have so far been reported killed and 50 injured in 5 serial bomb blasts in crowded places across Delhi.

The blasts took place in Karol Bagh, Connaught Place, Greater Kailash-I and Barakhamba Road in a span of 40-50 minutes. One explosive device was defused near the high-security India Gate area.

Terror outfit Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the blasts.

The first explosion rocked Gaffar market area of Karol Bagh in central Delhi at 6.15pm. The explosive was kept near a car. The impact of the blast was so severe that an auto was thrown up several feet.

This was followed by the blasts in Connaught Place area.

In Barakhamba Road, one of the bombs was suspected to be hidden near Nirmal tower. The second blast in the CP took place near Gopal Das tower. Both the buildings house private offices and banks. The third blast took place in Central Park.

In the GK-I blast, ten shops were damaged in the explosion that took place at around 6:40 pm. The bombs were hidden in a dustbin.

Preliminary examination of the blast site said that low intensity ammonium nitrate tied to integrated circuit had been used in almost all the serial blasts. Timer devices were used in all the blasts.

Two persons have been detained by the police for questioning. The police says that a 12-year-old boy may be able to provide clues.

#12  Timely intervention of 4 policemen prevented sixth blast

There could have been a sixth blast in Delhi Saturday evening had four policemen not exhibited exemplary presence of mind and courage by timely detection of a live bomb in crowded Connaught Place.

Assistant sub-inspector Mahendra Singh, head constable P N Subhash and constables Suresh Kumar and Praveen Sharma swung into action to search the downtown business hub of the national capital within three minutes of the blasts in the Central Park in the Connaught Place.

“We were on duty at the Regal Cinema Hall when the blast took place at the Central Park. Immediately we searched the dustbins near the hall and recovered a red ticking bomb,” Sharma said.

“Without thinking of the consequence, Suresh immediately broke the black and green wires of the bomb and threw it away. We immediately put sand bags on the bomb,” Sharma said.

The presence of mind of the four is commendable seeing that the area around the Regal theatre is one of the busiest in Connaught Place and one deadly blast was averted.

#13  Probly want to keep a logistics line open to Afghan tho.

Why? Are they really any different than all the others? We shouldn't get the idea we owe them something because we conquered the place or defeated them. We just gave one gang an assist in ousting the Taliban. Do we really have a national interest in Afghanistan, especially once Pakistan is devolved?

Our communications line is a vulnerability we can't afford. See Elphinstone. It can happen again, especially if southwest Asia falls apart.

We may agree to disagree on this, but I just don't see those Muslim ridge runners ready to enter modernity like the metropolitan Mesopotamians. We can always play one tribe against another as we did with the Northern Alliance. But we shouldn't do anything permanent or with a long vulnerable tail.

Let India go as far east as it wants and let the Persians have what's left. It's not like there's anything worth having. What are the Iranians going to do? Defend it all? Let them have each other.

Dozen arrested in mosque raid in Landi Kotal
More than a dozen people, including underage boys, were arrested from Quba mosque during a raid on Friday.
I have a mental image of underage boys squealing and attempting to get into their garments as they're herded into the paddy wagon. I'm trying to sternly suppress it, but it keeps coming back.
According to Assistant Political Agent (APA) Muhammad Tuhab Khan, Hazrat Nabi, a local patron of the Taliban, violated an undertaking he had made with the political administration a few days ago. The APA said the Khasadar Force, led
According to the undertaking, Nabi was bound to keep away from the mosque, and not to lead prayers or deliver speeches. Sources alleged Nabi aggressively criticised the political administration during the Friday sermon.
by Landi Kotal Tehsildar Javid Ullah Mehsud, and the Frontier Constabulary had jointly initiated the action against the local Taliban. According to the undertaking, Nabi was bound to keep away from the mosque, and not to lead prayers or deliver speeches. Sources alleged Nabi aggressively criticised the political administration during the Friday sermon.
You mean he broke his solemn word? Tusk tusk. No doubt he'll be dragged back to court and given a stern lecture before being sent home.
Sources said Nabi had criticised the administration for sealing the mosque located near the railway station in Landi Kotal Bazaar. The APA said Nabi would not be allowed to further violate the undertaking or to disturb peace. Sources said officials were considering releasing the underage boys.
"Into the judges chambers, laddy! After the judge has been in your chamber you can go home!"
They said after the undertaking, Nabi had disappeared and had not lead prayers or given sermons over the last few weeks. He then arrived unexpectedly at the mosque to deliver the Friday sermon.
"I'm here to deliver the Friday sermon!"
"The judge said you wuz supposed to stay away from here!"
"Mahmoud! Hit him!"
[Thump!]
"Ow!"

Sources said following the sermon, Khasadar and FC personnel took up positions in the surrounding mountains and blocked the main road at Charwazga, surrounding the Quba mosque. They said the Khasadars at Parangsam checkpost had also blocked the road to avoid clashes, or resistance from the Taliban. Officials, however, said that Nabi managed to escape from the mosque.

Mehsud's deputy, two aides re-arrested after bail
Authorities re-arrested terrorist commander Baitullah Mehsud's deputy and two other aides after an anti-terrorism court in Kohat released them on bail, officials and the local Taliban said on Friday.

The three suspected terrorists were re-arrested under the Frontier Crimes Regulation and detained in the Kohat prison, they said. An anti-terrorism court (ATC) granted bail to the men, whose release has been a key Taliban demand since their arrest in July. The court told them to submit surety bonds of Rs 200,000 each. Mehsud's deputy Rafiuddin is from Waziristan Agency. Two other suspected terrorists are Afghan national Muhammad Aziz and Naveed Alam from Hangu.

Security forces continued to pound terrorist hideouts in the Kooza Bandai area of Kabal tehsil on Firday, in an offensive that began late on Thursday.

The security forces shot a citizen for violating curfew in the Rahim Abad area. Locals said the man was mentally challenged.

The curfew was relaxed after 12 days in the Shah Dheri, Tootano Bandai and adjacent areas for several hours in the afternoon, and from 7am to 7pm in Mingora, Khawaza Khela and Matta, but not in the areas of Kanju and Bara Bandai and Mos Eisley.

130 militants killed in clash with Pak army
I'd guess 100 of them were the ones they were talking about yesterday. "Most" were foreigners, of course. 80-100 were deaders, but only 25 were wounded -- normally I'd expect that ratio to be reversed.
(PTI) At least 130 militants have been killed in a major crackdown by the Pakistan army against the local Taliban in the country's troubled Bajaur tribal region, officials said today. The militants were killed during the army operation in the region in the past two days, officials told TV channels.

They said at least 30 militants were killed today when security forces used artillery to target Taliban positions in three different areas in the region bordering Afghanistan.

Nearly 100 militants, including foreign fighters, were killed in fighting yesterday. Six security personnel were also killed over the past three days, taking the death toll among the troops to over 30, officials said.

The Inter-Services Public Relations said that around 580 militants have been killed since the operation was launched in Bajaur last month. TV channels put the death toll at over 700. More than 300,000 people have been displaced by the fighting while hundreds continue to flee the region.

Ground forces backed by artillery, tanks, gunship helicopters and F-16 fighters launched the operation against the local Taliban in Bajaur Agency, one of Pakistan's seven semi-autonomous tribal areas, six weeks ago. Officials said the army and paramilitary Frontier Corps had succeeded in recapturing several strategic locations from the Taliban, including the town of Loisam.

Iraq
Iraqi president thanks Bush for being 'Hero of Liberation'
h/t Gateway Pundit & Amy Proctor. Talabani and Bush met in the White House this past week but you wouldn't know it from the media.
Heavens no. We wouldn't want the 'Hero of Liberation' idea to spread ...
PRESIDENT TALABANI: Well, Mr. President, thank you very much for giving me the honor of meeting you again. I think it's clear that we are in Iraq looking to you as a hero of liberation of Iraq from worst kind of dictatorship. And now we are working with your -- with you, Mr. President, for finalizing the strategic framework agreement between United States and Iraq.

And also, we are always getting benefit from your views about how to secure Iraq. I think you know very well that you and we in Iraq achieved very good successes on terrorism. Now I can say all parts of Iraq liberated from terrorist control and activities. It's true that some groups remain hiding themselves from here or there, but there's no place, no inch of Iraqi land under the control of terrorist activities. There are some terrorist -- still groups working -- hiding themself, and thanks to you and sacrifice of your brave army and to Iraqi people, now we can live in peace and security.

And Iraq government started to spend the money which we have for serving the Iraqi people and rebuilding the country, reconstructing the country. Not only we liberated our country from terrorist activities, but also from militias, outlawed militias who are also making troubles and danger for Iraqi people.

And as you have heard, the Basra city, Sadr City, (inaudible), Ninawa, Baqubah -- all these cities are now liberated. So we are thankful to you and to your people, your army. We hope that the agreement about this strategy formation will be signed soon.

And as usual, we are working, our parliament is working now for finalizing the draft of a new law for election provinces, and I hope that, as I heard the news yesterday, I hope that today it will be finalized, because the groups -- head of groups of parliament are now gathering in parliament to reach -- to finalize this.

In our country, we are now busy to reconstruct our country and to rebuild our country. And I am glad to tell you, Mr. President, that our position with our neighbors is improved very well -- with Turkey, with Syria, with Iran, with the Arab countries. The relation is notable now and we have no problem with any of these countries. In contrary, many, many new ambassadors are coming --

PRESIDENT BUSH: That's right.

PRESIDENT TALABANI: -- to our country from Arab countries. And our visit of Prime Minister of Turkey, Mr. Tayyip Recep Erdogan, and of the -- His Majesty, the King of Jordan, to Baghdad were very successful, and was encouraging to Iraqi people to understand that they have friends outside Iraq.

So I hope that friendship and relation between your great people and the Iraqi people will continue and will be strengthened. And we will never forget what you have done for our people.

#2  Bush, Petraeus, The Surge and McCain and Obama's unwillingness to affirm the surge is working have all conspired to make Iraq, the War there and our certain victory a non-event for the media. The best way to determine how well we have done in Iraq is the silence of the media during a Presidential election campaign.

Iraq: Suicide attack kills three worshippers, injures 15 others
(AKI) - A suicide blast killed at least three civilians and injured 15 others in western Mosul on Friday, said a police source, quoted by Iraqi news agency Voices of Iraq.

"A suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt strapped to his body among a gathering of prayers near a Shiite mosque in Sinjar district, west of Mosul, killing three civilians and injuring 15," the source, who wished to remain anonymous, told to Voices of Iraq.

Iraqi security forces have cordoned off the area while ambulances rushed the wounded to hospitals.

Mosul is located 400 kilometres north of Baghdad in the province of Nineveh, and is still considered one of Al-Qaeda's strongholds in Iraq.

Suicide attack kills 30, wounds 50 north Baghdad
A suicide bomber slammed his explosives-filled vehicle against the police station of the central Iraqi town of Dujail on Friday, killing at least 30 people, police and security officials said. A security official with the interior ministry in Baghdad said that around 50 people were also wounded in the attack.

The attack occurred in the Shiite town located in the Sunni Salaheddin province, north of Baghdad. Dujail, 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Baghdad, was the site of an assassination attempt on executed dictator Saddam Hussein in 1982.

The attack was the second biggest in less than three weeks and comes at a time when the violence in Iraq is at a four-year low. The blast was the latest in a series of attacks in areas north of Baghdad, where violence has been slower to decline than elsewhere in the country.

Earlier Friday, a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of a Shiite mosque farther north in Sinjar as worshippers left prayers at midday, killing two civilians and wounding 15, police chief Col. Awad Kahlil said. Sinjar is near Mosul, which is the target of an ongoing U.S.-Iraqi operation against Sunni insurgents.

The last major suicide attack occurred on August 26, when a bomber thwarted a security check at a police recruiting centre in Jalawla and blew himself up, killing at least 25 young people.
