Afghanistan
Afghan Forces Inflict Losses, Detain Local Taliban Leader
(AFPS) Afghan national security forces, advised by coalition forces, killed several insurgents after a failed Taliban ambush 30 kilometers northeast of Gareshk district in Helmand province, military officials reported.

The combined force was conducting a reconnaissance patrol when a group of insurgents engaged them with small-arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and mortar fire. The combined force immediately returned accurate small-arms and machine-gun fire. The large group of insurgents attempted to outmaneuver the combined force and moved into a trench line.

Moments later, the combined force fixed the insurgents in their position and used precision munitions to kill the Taliban insurgents who were trying to reinforce the enemy positions.

In other recent operations, Afghan and coalition forces captured seven insurgents in Surkhagan village during an air assault mission in Zabul province, officials said.

During the mission, Afghan National Army and coalition forces infiltrated several compounds and cave complexes in search of insurgents and bomb-making facilities and material. They found three car bombs, bomb-making materials, storage facilities, ammunition caches and insurgent fighting positions. The combined force called in precision air strikes that destroyed the cave complex, fighting positions and the ammunition storage areas.

Afghan army leadership conducted a shura, or consultation, with the villagers to assure them the area is safer now because the insurgents were captured, which officials said helped to neutralize the bomb threat.

“The ANA mission’s success degraded the insurgents’ ability to fight, neutralized the (car bombs) and disrupted future insurgent attempts to disrupt peace,” said Army Capt. Vanessa R. Bowman, a coalition spokeswoman.

In other news, Afghan and coalition forces have positively identified a Taliban leader detained during a joint operation in Ghazni province as Mullah Shabir.

Shabir is believed to have provided intelligence, logistical support and improvised explosive devices to Taliban forces. He also is believed to be responsible for recent rocket attacks throughout Ghazni province, officials said.

The joint operation was conducted based on information received through a program that offers Afghan citizens financial compensation for information that leads to the capture of enemy personnel or the recovery of weapons. It also serves as a means for Afghan citizens to directly and anonymously participate in the effort to rid the country of insurgents, illegal weapons and explosives, officials said.

Somali Islamist Fighters Seize 2nd Town
Islamist insurgents killed five government soldiers while briefly taking a strategic town in central Somalia, police and residents said, the second such seizure within 24 hours.

The attack late Thursday took place in Belet Weyne, near a critical road junction that links Somalia to the border with Ethiopia. Hundreds of troops are stationed at the junction, which is also Ethiopia's main supply route.

"They launched a surprise attack on the town from different directions, facing pockets of resistance from government forces and immediately took the control of the police station, the prison and a hotel government regional officials were using," said a police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. The town's police chief, Col. Abdi Aden, confirmed that five government soldiers had been killed.

Local resident Duniyo Ali said the fighters had retained control of the town for about three hours before fleeing voluntarily withdrawing. The area was now calm, she said.

Also Thursday, residents said Islamists had seized Hudur, a strategic southwestern Somali town that lies along the road leading from Ethiopia into Somalia, without firing a shot.

#2  O/T but every time I read “Somali islamist”, I harken back to a certain photo of Obama in a “Kenyan cultural costume”.

Obama was dressed in Somali muslim cultural garb by his family, not Kenyan garb. His family background may be more islamist somalian -ethnic somali - than “Kenyan”. Not quite as “noble” a heritage as Obama wants to believe. So, as ethnic Somali, Obama’s Islamic family are likely Sunni. Which answer’s Obama’s question.as to not knowing if his heritage was Sunni or Shiite.

Definitely though, muslim all down the line. (in a country 85% Christian) “Til Obama enters the public eye and suddenly “Dad”’s a Christian and Christian Obama belongs to a church that can be attended without conflicting with islam, or any other religion. One can be muslim and still be a member of the church for instance.. A black member, of course.

So Obama comes to America from the 15% (overtipping point) islamist muslim minority in Kenya and claims “Kenyan” heritage to smooth things over. Failed coup in Kenya in 1982 – Obama’s Dad dies in car accident in Nairobi in 1982. (Even drunks have their uses.) Dad was a muslim Luo.

Obama says he’s not a muslim but he’s got taquiyya down pat.

Bangladesh
US brands HUJI 'terrorist'
The United States said it had designated a Bangladeshi group, Harkat-ul-Jihad al Islami, as a “terrorist” organisation, subjecting it to US financial sanctions. Bangladesh accuses the group of involvement in a grenade attack on a political rally in 2004 in which 23 people were killed. A statement posted on the US State Department website said the group’s leader had signed a 1998 fatwa sponsored by Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden that “declared American civilians to be legitimate targets for attack”.

“Since then, HUJI-B has been implicated in a number of terrorist attacks in Bangladesh and abroad,” it said. The statement said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday named Harkat as a “Foreign Terrorist Organisation and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist”.

FARC send proof-of-life videos of government ten soldiers held hostage
Venezuela's government released videos of Colombian soldiers and police officers held hostage by leftist rebels on Friday, saying it has received "proof-of-life" for 10 captives.

The young men addressed the camera with a sheet strung up as a backdrop, several of them thanking Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for his efforts to negotiate hostage releases. Justice Minister Ramon Rodriguez Chacin, who showed parts of the videos at a news conference, said they included hostages' personal messages to their families. "We hope they may be freed next, but everything depends on a process of negotiation," Chacin said.

Chavez said at a summit in the Dominican Republic that the videos were given to his government by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, which holds hundreds of hostages in Colombian jungles.

#2  I know this little escapade on the borders is turning serio-comic but when you think about it you have Uribe, Chavez and Correa making pretty threatening noises and this thing could get out of hand to our advantage. I don't Chavez has the cajones to go up against the Columbians but it would be interesting to see if Cuba would be a factor without the old Soviet quartermaster supporting.

Police Believe Recovered Bike Was Bomber's
In a new development on Friday morning, investigators say they strongly believe that a bicycle recovered on Thursday morning was the one ridden by the person who bombed the Times Square military recruitment station earlier that morning.

This bicycle, which was recovered by police on Thursday morning, is believed to be the one ridden by the person who bombed the Times Square military recruitment station. The bicycle is a Ross model, blue in color and in “fairly” good shape, said one law enforcement official. “We are operating on the premise that it is the bike,” said the official, although no specific announcement of that has been made.

The bicycle was found in or near trash receptacles at Madison Avenue and 38th Street on Thursday morning, said Raymond W. Kelly, the city police commissioner. He said the police learned of it around 7 a.m., about 3 hours and 15 minutes after the bombing.

#2  The police are going to be serious about this guy, because he seems to have done everything right. This means that he was smart enough to have done his homework, planned an operation, and carried it out according to plan. To say that this is a rarity is an understatement.

Though they won't say, I would hazard to guess that he went to the trouble of buying his materials at different stores, and always paying cash. He wore different clothes while doing it, and not all on the same day or even the same week.

And the clothes he used on his run are now just swatches of cloth disposed of around town.

If he was a real pro, he wouldn't have had any relationship with the office, and wouldn't even be from that part of town.

And those are just some of the major details. The minor ones get complicated.

#4  Additional, from Debka: "They are checking whether at least three people stopped at the Canadian border are linked to a small explosion that damaged a military recruiting station in New York Thursday, causing no injuries. New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said "Some pictures of Times Square, including the recruiting station, were found."

The blast triggered a Pentagon alert for other recruiting stations across the country.

US authorities are examining surveillance camera footage that shows a person on a bicycle approaching a traffic island, dismounting and walking to the recruiting station. The person is shown leaving shortly before the blast. Kelly said authorities also were looking into similarities between the recruiting station blast and small explosions at the British and Mexican consulates in 2005 and 2007, both also in the early morning."

#6  Fingerprints are nothing. They will swab every millimeter of the bicycle looking for DNA. Unless he was wearing thick pants, it would be hard to not get a sample off the seat.

A lot of criminals today routinely carry around gallon bottles of bleach, and splash it everywhere at the crime scene. The real pros get a pump pesticide sprayer and put plastic bags on their shoes. They also learn to wear goggles very quickly.

You can imagine what spraying bleach all over a room does to what's in it.

Five 'militants' held in Swat raids
Violence and the threat of violence spread terror across Swat valley on Friday as militants attacked a police van, a bomb hoax cleared out the district courts, a hand grenade was lobbed into a house, and police arrested five suspected militants in separate raids.

Militants attacked a Kanju police van with a remote-controlled bomb in the Koza Bandi area of Kabal tehsil, injuring a policeman and damaging the van. Police fired shots in the air and closed off the Mingora-Matta road for half an hour after the incident took place. Kanju Police also raided the Kabal area and arrested three suspected militants and seized rocket launchers and other weapons from their possession.

Separately, police arrested two suspected militants in raids in the Bodigram area of Matta tehsil, police sources said. Suspected militants Humayun and Misbahuddin were arrested and shifted to an unknown place for interrogation, the police officials added. Meanwhile, a bomb hoax created panic in the district courts here. After a tip off was received by telephone, all the offices were vacated and the bomb disposal squad combed the area, but they found no bomb. In another incident, unidentified miscreants lobbed a hand-grenade into the house of Siraj Ahmed in the Shah Dheri area, which did not explode. The police registered reports against the unknown assailants. They said Ahmed had received anonymous threatening letters a few days prior to the bungled attack. The administration imposed an 8am to 8pm curfew in the district.

2 children, grandfather die in IHK attack
A nine-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl were among three members of a Muslim family killed in a grenade attack by suspected militants in Indian-held Kashmir, police said on Friday. The attack, which killed the girls and their grandfather at their home in Reasi district, came as the India reported that overall violence is dropping. “Suspected militants hurled a hand grenade at the house of a village defence committee member, injuring eight people,” a police spokesman said. The two children and their grandfather died before they could be transported to hospital, the spokesman added. The father of the two dead girls belonged to a village defence committee, set up by the central government to counter militants in the Himalayan territory. The father was also injured in the attack.

Iraq
US blames Al-Qaeda after Baghdad blasts kill 68
A twin attack in central Baghdad's commercial district which the US embassy on Friday blamed on Al-Qaeda killed at least 68 people, making it the second deadliest assault in Iraq this year.

The roadside bomb, followed by a suicide attack, ripped through Al-Atar Street in the Karada neighbourhood on Thursday evening. In addition to the dead, 154 people were wounded, an interior ministry official said on Friday, adding that among the casualties were several women and children who had been cut down by the blasts while shopping.

On Friday, relatives carried the bodies of loved ones killed in the attack to their burial site in Najaf, an AFP photographer said.

Near the blast site, a number of roadside stalls had been destroyed, and windows of nearby shops and homes had been blown out by the force of the explosions.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki ordered security forces to "chase and arrest the criminals" who committed the attack. "He blamed the terrorists and condemned the latest barbaric crime against the civilians," a statement released by his office said.

The US embassy in Baghdad said the attack was carried out by Al-Qaeda. "Such indiscriminate mass violence demonstrates that Al-Qaeda in Iraq will spare no effort, however brutal, to attempt to re-ignite sectarian strife in Iraq," the embassy said in a statement released Friday.

An interior ministry official said the attack was coordinated to inflict maximum casualties. "First a roadside bomb went off and as people and police gathered to rescue the victims, a suicide bomber blew himself up amid the crowd," he said.

The worst attack this year was on February 1, when bombings in the capital's bird market killed 100 people.

Figures collected by AFP on March 1 from the interior, defence and health ministries show that violence in Iraq surged in February after drop in each of the six months to January. Iraq saw 721 people killed in February, a 33 percent rise over January, when 541 people were killed. That was down from 1,856 last August.

The drop over six months was attributed to a "surge" of an extra 30,000 US troops in Iraq, the formation by Sunni leaders of anti-Qaeda fronts and a ceasesfire by Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia.

On Friday, another suicide bomber blew himself up near a police station in the northern city of Mosul. Four policemen were killed and 17 people wounded, including 15 policemen, police officials said. The bomber attacked the Al-Waqhas police station in the Ras al-Jadha neighbourhood at around 7:00 am (0400 GMT).

In another incident, one person was killed and 14 wounded when two bombs went off within minutes of each other near the home of a police officer in Mosul, police said.

Also on Friday, several armed men dressed like security forces stormed a house in the town of Tuz Khurmatu, south of the northern oil city of Kirkuk, and shot dead a woman and a child, police Captain Abdullah al-Bayati said. Three others from the same family were wounded.

#2  Every household in Iraq should be equipped with an AK-47, a 9-mm revolver, and a bushel basket of ammo for each. every household member over the age of 10 should be trained in how to maintain, load, and fire these weapons, and show how to ensure they hit what they're aiming at. Not too long after that's accomplished, things like this will stop. In the meantime, the bad-guy body count will increase steadily.

Hamas claims responsibility for Jewish school shooting
Hamas on Friday claimed responsibility for a gun attack which killed eight Jewish students at a Jerusalem religious school the night before. "Hamas is responsible for the attack. The Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades will officially claim the attack at the right moment," a senior Hamas official in Gaza told AFP on condition of anonymity, referring to the group's armed wing. Abu Ubaida, a spokesman for Hamas' armed wing, told Al-Jazeera television the attack was "an honor we have not claimed yet," but did not deny the Islamist group's involvement in the attack.

During a rally of Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, loudspeakers proclaimed Hamas was behind the attack and identified the assailant as a 20-year-old Palestinian who had worked as a driver at the school.

Just go in and give them an ass-whipping that they will not forget for 20 years. That will stop the rocket attacks, then finish the wall, and anybody that tries to crawl over it, burn them off. Sri Lanka
66 combatants killed in fresh fighting
COLOMBO - At least 61 Tamil Tiger rebels and five government troops were killed in fresh fighting across Sri Lanka’s embattled north, the defence ministry said on Friday. Heavy fighting along the de facto border with territory held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) saw fierce clashes on Wednesday and Thursday, leaving a total of 66 combatants killed, the ministry said.

It said security forces had captured key locations from the Tigers in the coastal district of Mannar over the past two days. A pro-rebel Tamil MP and his driver were killed in a bomb attack inside rebel-held territory on Thursday, officials said. The rebels accused the security forces of carrying out the attack.

So far this year, the defence ministry has reported that security forces have killed at least 1,901 rebels for the loss of 112 government soldiers.

Three Sri Lankan MPs have also been killed this year, including the lawmaker killed Thursday.

#10  In addition, the busy mouse indicator flashes radidly while the cpu is maxed out.

#12  I'm having a small posting problem too, when I post it returns me to page one, not whatever page I was originally on. Hard to get past page three.

#13  We're aware of the comments issue but it isn't reproducible. Post details if you have it.

#14  OK Steve, details, when I post a comment, the instant I hit the submit query button it sends me back to page one, NOT to the comments portion of the article, the comment gets posted, but you miss a couple of steps that were previously there

#15  Comment posting is working really fast now.

#16  I lied, the last comment post had the same hang and flashing busy mouse pointer.

#17  Steve, I think some threads have the hang (this one) and some don't (e.g. Rage Boy. Any diff in the code between the two?
