Afghanistan
Afghan suicide attack kills child, soldier
A suicide car bomb in the town of Ghazni in eastern Afghanistan killed a young child and an Afghan soldier and wounded several people, police said. The bomb exploded just metres (yards) from the entrance of an Afghan National Army base in the town as an army vehicle passed, deputy police chief Mohammad Zaman said. A child aged under 10 was killed as well as a soldier, he said. Three other soldiers were badly hurt and two civilians were also wounded.

Suicide bombing wounds 3 NATO troops in Afghanistan
A suicide car bomb targeting a NATO convoy left three soldiers lightly wounded Thursday in eastern Afghanistan, while a bungled suicide attack hurt two civilians in the southwest. The three NATO troops suffered minor injuries when the suicide car bomb detonated near the convoy in eastern Khost province, the coalition said. In southwestern Nimroz province, two suspected suicide bombers blew themselves up, wounding two passers-by Thursday in Khash Rod district, said provincial Gov. Ghulam Dastagir.

#1  Al Qa'ida Teaching Bomb-Building in the Internet - in German.

The Federal Interior Ministry Announces: Germany is becoming increasingly in the sights of Islamist terrorism. In the Internet there are now "Virtual Terror Camps" in the German Language. There one can find instructions to build deadly bombs. and these instructions actually function.

The Federal Ministry of Interior sees a new quality of threat in the increased terror danger for Germany. There are indicators that Germany has been moved in the center of the target of the terror-network Al-Qa'ida, according to the spokesman of the Interior Ministry, Stefan Paris, in Berlin. Through this Al-Qa'ida is following a clear plan. He refers above all to new developments in the Internet, in which "Virtual Terror Camps" in the German language have been established. Starting in January, instruction in building of bombs in the form of a "Front Training" were detected. Investigations have determined that these instructions actually function.

The Interior Ministry emphasizes however, that unlike last summer there are no indications that there are established groups of suspects. At that time terrorist suspects were observed for weeks as they prepared their attack until they were apprehended in the Sauerland. Simultaneously, Wolfgand Schaeuble (CDU)'s spokesman indated that the warning was not intended to create "fear and panic". It was also not intended as a "rear door" to other goals such as the implementation of disputed measures such as the BKA Law. Instead, the Public has the right to be informed. He again referred to efforts to recruit German Jihadists - also in Germany.

The State Secretary responsible for Counter Terrorism, August Hanning, announced previously, that among the leaders in the Afghan-Pakistani border areas the decision had been made to "carry out attacks in Germany". "We are concerned that we may not be able to prevent every operation in the future", Hanning told Welt ONLINE.
According to Bundeskriminamt (BKA) and Bundesamtes fuer Verfassungsschutz (BfV) information, the deployment of the Bundeswehr to Afghanistan had lead to the result that Germany has been moved up in the attack heirachy.

The background for the warning is the development in southern Afghanistan. The operational capability of Al-Qa'ida, which has been temporarily reduced by the US lead anti-terror mission "Enduring Freedom", is being restored according to Hanning. Muslims from Germany have been recruited to be trained into holy-warriors in the Training Camps. Then the men, often converts to Islam or young Turks, are sent back to Germany.

BKA Vice President Bernhard Falk also referred to the Terror Network. "We have indications, that in addition to the plans of the attackers from the Sauerland there are most probably other operational cells". The BKA and the States are currently pursuing, according to reports, 184 investigations against militant Islamists. 70 persons are considered to be "threats" and are observed by the police 24 hours a day.

#2  Hmmm. They may not have to go to Afghanistan to help in the War on Terror. Perhaps they'll conclude that it makes more sense to make the terrs home the FEBA instead of their own. But there's no accounting for taste.

Al-Qaida 'plotting Germany attack'
German officials fear that al-Qaida may be planning to stage attacks in their country, which so far has escaped a major attack by Islamic extremists, according to a report. The daily Die Welt said German intelligence services believe al-Qaida has largely recovered its operational capability in the Afghan-Pakistani border region. "The basic decision has been made there to stage attacks in Germany," it quoted Bernhard Falk, the vice president of the Federal Criminal Police Office, as saying.

Last September, three people were arrested in the central Sauerland region on suspicion that they were planning attacks on US and other facilities in Germany. Officials have alleged that they formed a cell of the Islamic Jihad Union, a group with ties to al-Qaida. "We have indications that, alongside the plans of the Sauerland attackers, there are with high probability several other lines of planning," Die Welt quoted Falk as saying, without elaborating.

German officials have long said that the country, which has more than 3,000 troops in Afghanistan, is a potential target. They have said that the three people arrested last year - two of them German converts to Islam - attended militant Islamic training camps in Pakistan.

India-Pakistan
Scotland Yard says Bhutto banged her head on sunroof
British detectives investigating the death of ex-Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto say she died from the effect of a bomb blast, not gunfire.

Detectives from Scotland Yard were asked by Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to examine the circumstances surrounding Bhutto's death in December. Scotland Yard's account matches that of the Pakistani authorities.
Ya don't say...
But Bhutto's party has insisted she was shot by an assassin, and has accused the government of a cover-up.

The BBC's Aamer Ahmed Khan says the exact cause of death may help shed light on who was behind the attack.
Boy howdy, BBC is right on top of this one ...
Ms Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has suggested that if sophisticated weaponry were used it could indicate the involvement of elements of the security establishment.

TV pictures that emerged after Bhutto's death on 27 December appeared to show a gunman aiming a weapon at the Pakistani opposition leader as she stood through the escape hatch of a vehicle during a rally in Rawalpindi.

The UK police report confirmed that shots were fired - but said they were not the cause of death. It said after discharging his firearm the attacker had detonated explosives, blowing himself up. "The blast caused a violent collision between her head and the escape hatch area of the vehicle, causing a severe and fatal head injury," said the report, signed by Detective Superintendent John MacBrayne.

The report said the evidence suggested there was only one attacker, not two, as had been speculated.

The BBC's Barbara Plett in Islamabad says there may be some scepticism over the report, since there has been no post-mortem on Bhutto's body, and the scene of the crime was hosed down within hours, compromising forensic evidence.
Rubbish.. the rest of the world has yet to catch up with CSI Rawalpindi...
However, the report said "the evidence that is available is sufficient for reliable conclusions to be drawn".

UK police reached their conclusions by studying TV footage of the assassination, and X-rays of the victim. X-rays of Bhutto's head showed the only apparent injury was a major trauma to the right side of the head, and experts agreed this could not be a gunshot entry or exit wound, the report said.

It cited British Home Office pathologist Dr Nathaniel Cary, who said: "The only tenable cause for the rapidly fatal head injury in this case is that it occurred as the result of impact due to the effects of the bomb blast."

There were no X-rays of Bhutto's body, but Dr Cary said it is unlikely her body would have been hit by bullets through the vehicle's armour plating.

The PPP said it was not convinced by British police conclusions. "The party is still looking at the Scotland Yard report - however, it is difficult to agree with its findings on the cause of death," party spokeswoman Sherry Rehman said. "We do believe that she was killed by an assassin's bullet," she added.

Scotland Yard's "terms of reference were limited", she said, reiterating calls for a United Nations inquiry into the killing. The report, released by the British High Commission in Islamabad, said determining who was behind the attack was not the job of British police, but a matter for the Pakistani authorities.

Pakistani officials said after Ms Bhutto's death that she put her own security at risk by standing up in the armoured car, with her head exposed.

Pakistani officials said on Thursday that they had made two arrests over the murder. "We've arrested two important suspects. One of the names in Husnan Gul and the name of the second is Rufukat," announced the officer in charge of the committee investigating Bhutto's death, Chaudhry Abdul Majid. "Apparently they were the facilitators in this case. Facilitators of the suicide bomber."

He said they were arrested following information gleaned from a 15-year old boy arrested last month in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province. The boy said he was part of a team instructed to kill the opposition leader, and named a local militia commander, Baitullah Mehsud, as being behind the assassination, officials say.

#1  Let's say I push someone off of a 10 story building. Can I argue that my pushing them off did not kill them, since they were alive when they went over the edge? It was the sudden stop on the pavement that killed them! NOT MY FAULT!

The suicide bomber did not detonate to avoid capture, but to have a second opportunity to kill Benazir if the gunshots missed. Suppose he dove under the vehicle, detonated, flipped the car, and she had been crushed under it. Still dead. Wouldn't be if the bomber hadn't gone off.

Her book recounted an earlier assassination attempt that relied exclusively on a bomb planted in a baby. If it had succeeded, that would NOT have been an assassination?

PPP's not too familiar with cause and effect, are they?

Indian Army plans to raise two mountain divisions
The Indian Army will raise two new mountain divisions, with 15,000 soldiers each, which will be tailor-made for operations in the hills of Northern and Northeastern part of the country.

The groundwork on the organisational structure and equipment profile of the two new proposed mountain divisions had started after India's Cabinet Committee on security recently approved this plan, India's leading English daily The Times of India reported Thursday quoting a source in the Indian Defence Ministry. The two new mountain divisions will have integral tactical air mobility assets in the shape of medium to heavy-lift helicopters, The Times of India said.

The approval for the new mountain divisions comes at a time when New Delhi's Northern neighbour China is upgrading its military infrastructure along its more than 4,000 km long boundary with India.

The 1.13-million strong Indian Army has 10 mountain divisions out of a total of 35 divisions. The Indian government has also kick-started infrastructure development programmes, particularly road development along its border with China, the daily said.

Mian Hakim Shah, an area resident, found the jeep laden with 700 kilograms of explosives in his garage and reported the matter to the police. The bomb disposal squad and Matta police officials rushed to the scene, but they failed to defuse the explosives. The security forces got the area vacated and blew up the jeep full of explosives which damaged two shops close to the house. Hakim had left his house some times ago when the security forces launched an operation against militants in Venai Chuprial.

Bomb at bus stand kills 3, injures 12
Police said on Thursday a bomb blast at a bus stand in the town of Dera Murad Jamali had killed three people and injured twelve others. Two people died instantly and one, Ghanwar Bugti, died in the hospital. Police sources said Bugti was believed to have been planting the bomb when it went off. Police said the locally made bomb weighed one kilogramme. The Baloch Republican Army claimed responsibility for the blast in a telephone call to local journalists. There was no way of verifying the claim. Balochistan has been in the grip of a three-year rebellion waged by ethnic Baloch rebels seeking more political rights and a greater share of profits in the region’s natural resources. Hundreds of people have died in violence in the province since the insurgency flared in late 2004.

Pakistan makes "important arrests" in Bhutto slaying
Pakistani authorities announced two "important arrests" in the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto on Thursday, as her husband issued a rallying call to supporters ahead of an election his wife should have fought. Polling was put off until February 18 after the slaying of the most charismatic Pakistani politician of the past 20 years sucked oxygen out of campaigning and heightened international concern about mounting insecurity in the nuclear-armed country.

The arrests were made in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, where two-time prime minister Bhutto was killed in a gun and suicide bomb attack by a hit team Pakistani and U.S. intelligence believes was sent by a Taliban commander linked to al Qaeda. "These are important arrests. Investigations are under way," Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema said.
"How important are they, Jake?"
"Very important!"
A senior police officer in Rawalpindi identified the suspects as Hasnain and Rifaqat, but gave no other details. The arrests follow two last month, including a 15-year-old youth who admitted being a back-up suicide bomber. Conspiracy theories still swirl over who was behind the gun and suicide bomb attack that killed Bhutto. Controversy also rages over whether Bhutto was killed by a bullet or by a concussive head injury caused by the bomb detonated after an assassin shot at her from close range. A poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan found that almost half of all Pakistanis believe government agencies or politicians allied to President Pervez Musharraf were involved in the assassination.
I don't think taking a poll is considered a valid investigation technique, though.

Iraq
Remember the Bombing with the Women with Downs Syndrome?
The evil that did that has been wiped out. But... at a heavy price. Two SEALs were killed.

Story is at Blackfive at the link -- read the entire article with a passionate letter that needs wide spread delivery.

Godspeed Nate Hardy and Mike Koch

Below is message from a Soldier serving in Iraq:

Last Sunday while most of America was enjoying the Superbowl several members of our Task Force were commencing an assault on a terrorist stronghold in Iraq. During the assault two of our brothers from the Navy were shot and killed while clearing a building that was occupied by terrorist insurgents.

Ultimately, the building was reduced and all of the terrorists in it were destroyed by the assault force. Remember these names, Mike and Nate. They were good men doing honorable work in the name of freedom.

The terrorists they sought to destroy were responsible for unspeakable acts of evil including the construction of improvised explosive devices and explosives to equip homicide bombers. For those of you who may not understand the enemy we face out here let me remind you that the previous week this group of terrorists took two innocent and unwitting women who had Downs Syndrome, rigged them with explosive vests and detonated them 20 minutes apart in a crowded market causing several deaths and hundreds of injuries.

These terrorists used innocent people as unwitting vehicles to destroy more innocent lives. There is good and there is evil in this world. The enemy we face is evil. Mike and Nate were fighting on the side of good to prevent further acts of evil that would result in the loss of more innocent lives.

The next time you pray I ask you to thank God for giving Mike and Nate the talent and skill that made them great warriors and thank God that he gave them the heart to apply those God given talents to destroy evil and further the cause of freedom in a land far from their home.

Thank God for men like Mike and Nate. Their work is done here now, but there are many of us who will honor their sacrifice by continuing the fight against evil terrorists. They will be remembered through our actions.

#2  A paragraph from the letter:

Don't ever say to me, "I support the troops, but not the war." You might as well be telling me that I'm committing a crime. You are in effect saying that my cause is unjust and everything I believe in is a lie. I have held my tongue in the past, but I will never allow you to have it both ways again. You cannot support me if you do not support this war. I am this war. It embodies everything that I believe in. If you believe that what we are doing here is wrong then you are in effect supporting the evil we seek destroy. If you believe I'm wrong for trying to stop evil people from taking more innocent lives then I fear there is no hope for you. If you choose to dishonor my service and the sacrifice of my fallen brothers by taking a position against this war you are free to make that choice thanks to guys like Mike and Nate, but don't expect me to sit idly by and bite my tongue while you do it. Do it in my presence and be prepared to try and support your feeble position while I enlighten everyone else on the reality of this war and the nature of the enemy we face. I will ensure that you look like the fool that you are.

#8  As I look at a country that is seriously considering placing Clinton or Obama as its leader, I wonder how much longer men as incredibly brave as Mike and Nate will believe us to be worth making such sacrifices. May God bless them for having laid down their lives for friends they didn't even know, and may He comfort their families in this time of unbearable sorrow. Sometimes I think the military is the only repository of truth, duty and honor left in America because they are willing to back up their words with their lives. They deserve much better from us.

Special Groups Update: Another 'Leader' Captured
BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces captured a suspected Special Groups leader and detained three other suspects late Thursday during operations to disrupt criminal networks in the Mashru area, south of Baghdad.

The targeted individual was reportedly a deputy for Special Groups criminal elements in Wasit Province. Reports also indicate he was an associate of several senior-level criminal element leaders involved in attacks on Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition forces.

Intelligence led ground forces to the target area where they captured the wanted individual and the three other suspected criminals without incident.

"Coalition forces will continue to apply pressure on the criminal networks that are not honoring al-Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr's ceasefire pledge," said Lt. Michael Street, MNF-I spokesman. "Those who honor his pledge are contributing to a safer Iraq."

#2  "The U.S. military says it destroyed much of the leadership of al-Qaeda in Iraq in 2007, killing 2,400 suspected members and capturing 8,800..."

10,000-20,000 is the equivalent of a military division. Which puts in perspective what we have done.

#3  I will add that, after the fact, if we add up these comparisons of al-Qaeda and other terrorist strengths compared with military unit organizations of the same size, it is possible to develop an after-the-fact Status of Enemy Forces map.

For example, for 2007 alone, Iraq could be shown to have had an enemy division in it, that is now annihilated.

But how many other divisions since 2003? The US has probably taken down the equivalent of between an army and an army group of enemy in the entire WoT, that is between 50,000 and 200,000 enemy fighters of all kinds.

#5  Okay, let me get this straight: in order to "win over" the sunnis, they'll suspend imposition of sharia law, until they win, after which they will impose on the Iraqis then what the Iraqis dislike and oppose now. Exactly WHAT will have changed in the Iraqis during that time that will make them accept then what they do not like and accept now?

The only thing preventing that imposition is american troops, and it will be imposed if they are withdrawn.

#8  Even with as many Islamists as we killed or captured this year in Iraq and elsewhere, there were more than enough replacements born. In 10 years we'll be killing or capturing them. In fact, since we're six years into this war now, we're only 4 years away from fighting their second generation (per the training films revealed the other day.)
That is why it is so important to make the peace WORK, wherever we can - to increase the chance of the next generation believing in and fighting for our side, rather than against it. We must not lose sight of the fact that this is a multi-generational war - when Roggio et al call their site The Long War Journal, they are correct.

'Concerned Local Citizens' have a new name
Local Iraqi Police were given the information from Sons of Iraq (formerly known as Concerned Local Citizens)
Coalition Force Soldiers, working with intelligence from Iraqi Police in Northern Iraq, liberated two men locked inside a large storage container being used as a subterranean prison in the Al Jazeera desert near Samarra on February 4, the US army announced on Thursday.

Local Iraqi Police were given the information from Sons of Iraq (formerly known as Concerned Local Citizens). The Soldiers of Company C, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, quickly responded from Patrol Base Olsen in Samarra. Coalition Forces arrived at the prison site and found two men inside the buried container.

The hostages, both from Yethrib Village near Balad, had been taken from a gas station along with a fuel truck by men in black masks. "The two individuals told us they were taken because their station didnt pay Al Qaeda extremist," said 1st Lt. Todd Baldwin, Company C, 2-327th. The two men were malnourished and dehydrated, but showed no signs of torture. They were able to move freely inside the container.

After receiving medical attention at Forward Operating Base Brassfield-Mora near Samarra, the men were questioned. They said, while in captivity, there were up to nine other people held prisoner. The two men didnt know what happened to the others, but mentioned five of them were from a Sons of Iraq group in Bayji. The informant, who led Coalition Forces to the underground prison, also led Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces to another location where an empty storage container was buried. It is believed to be an old weapons cache.

"Iraqi Police and Sons of Iraq were the driving forces in the rescue of the two men," said Baldwin. "They provided the human intelligence for us to conduct the rescue operation."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Egypt boosts troops on border amid Hamas kidnapping threat
Once again, spreading joy wherever they go...
Egypt boosted troop security along the volatile border with Gaza on Friday, a security official said, following an alleged threat by Hamas that the group would stage kidnappings of Egyptian troops if its militants arrested in the Sinai were not released.
The Gypos get to feel the luv...
The remarks came amid stepped-up rhetoric by Egypt against Gaza's Hamas rulers, reflecting Cairo's growing frustration in the wake of the 12-day breach of its frontier with Gaza and the ensuing border chaos. Snipers were deployed on rooftops in the Egyptian part of the divided border town of Rafah on Friday, while Egyptian forces were told to move only in armed groups of at least three soldiers, the security official said.
Ripping you off with counterfeit money, terrorists sneaking in, now they wanna kidnap you? Geez, aren't ya glad ya let all those poor folks in?
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said the new orders followed a threat by Hamas commanders to abduct Egyptian security personnel if Egypt fails to release 15 Hamas members arrested last week in the Sinai. He did not say how or when authorities received the alleged threat.
We just kinda...know.
The Palestinians arrested here were found carrying weapons and explosives near the border and other remote parts of Egypt's Sinai desert, and were said to have crossed from Gaza after Hamas blew up the wall separating the Mediterranean strip from Egypt on Jan. 23, setting of an influx of tens of thousands of Gazans.
Sound like fine, civic minded citizens to me. For Gaza...
But a Hamas spokesman, Sami Abu Zuhri, promptly denied any kidnapping threats against Egyptian troops and reiterated that Hamas is fighting the Israelis, not the Egyptians. "This is a lie," Abu Zuhri told The Associated Press in Gaza. "It's not true at all. People are spreading these rumors to incite against Hamas."
No, no, no. We kid. We are kidders. Yes, 2 d's, not 2 l's...
The border breach was an attempt to end a seven-month blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel, in response to Hamas' rocket barrages from Gaza on Israeli border towns. But Egypt, which re-closed the border last weekend, is at odds on how to resolve the border control issue and does not want Hamas to have a role in that control. On Thursday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said no further violations of the border would be tolerated and that anyone daring to cross would have their legs broken. The unprecedented harsh rhetoric reflected increasing tensions between Egypt and Hamas, which rejects Egypt's proposal to bring the Rafah crossing under the mandate of the Palestinian Authority led by Hamas' rival Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority president and Fatah leader.
I can't wait to see if the foreign minister backs that up...
Egypt demands a reactivation of the 2005 crossings agreement on the Rafah passage, which requires return of European monitors. Israel withdrew from the territory in 2005, but still controls access to Gaza, including Gaza's airspace and coastline. Israel also provides the fuel needed to run Gaza's only power plant. It has recently withheld that fuel, causing severe power outages.
So that's good, piss off the Egyptians. You gonna swim all your goodies in next time? In the dark?

IDF: Truck carrying explosive-making materials caught near Kalkilya
An Israeli truck containing over 800 kg of Potassium Nitrate was caught at a checkpoint south of Kalkilya in mid-January, the IDF revealed on Thursday. Potassium Nitrate is banned by the army in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as it may be used to produce explosives. The illegal substance was confiscated in a joint operation of the army, the police and the West Bank's civil administration.

'Hamas seizes convoy of food meant for Palestinian Red Crescent'
Hamas policemen seized a convoy of humanitarian aid bound for the Palestinian Red Crescent on Thursday evening, the second convoy it has taken from the aid agency, aid employees said.

A Hamas official said the aid was seized because the organization was distributing aid to former Fatah fighters and not to impoverished Palestinians.
Policemen from Hamas halted 14 trucks filled with food and medicine at a checkpoint after it crossed an Israeli checkpoint into Gaza on Thursday, said employees of the Palestinian Red Crescent, who declined to be named, fearing reprisals from ruling group Hamas.

A Hamas official said the aid was seized because the organization was distributing aid to former Fatah fighters and not to impoverished Palestinians.

Employees from the Red Crescent said they were meant to distribute the aid to some 8,000 needy Gaza residents from lists of people the organization keeps. The aid came from the organization's regional headquarters in Jordan, an employee said.

Israeli army says rocket silos found in Gaza
The Israeli army on Thursday released video footage of what it said were underground silos in the northern Gaza Strip which militants intended to use to fire rockets into the Jewish state.

An army spokeswoman said the two silos discovered at a site in the northern Gaza Strip were two meters (6.5ft) deep and one meter (3.3ft) in diameter, large enough to house the makeshift rockets which militants frequently launch into Israel. "During actions in the northern Gaza Strip last night, the Israel Defence Forces uncovered hidden concrete positions which serve as launching points for terrorists' rockets," the spokeswoman said. Night vision footage shot by troops showed cylindrical pits lined with what the military said were rocket launch rails.

A spokesman for Hamas's military wing in Gaza did not acknowledge the silos were his group's work, but vowed to continue to "fight the occupation both above ground and underground". "The Qassam Brigades can fire rockets at will and all the (Israeli) methods will not be able to stop us," Abu Ubaida said.

Southeast Asia
Terror suspects rounded up in southern Thailand
Security forces detained 13 men in Narathiwat province on Friday morning, and said they were members of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) terror insurgent group. The men were caught in a three-hour, joint military-police sweep of Sungai Padi district. Materials used in making explosives were found. Police believe the suspects are trainers of young terrorists insurgents in the deep South. They were taken to a military camp for further investigation.

And:

Police and marines arrested a Muslim teacher Friday for allegedly having launched several bomb attacks in this southern border province. Asman Awaekaji, 32, was arrested at his house in Narathiwat's Muang district at 1 pm. He was wanted under an arrest warrant following an arrest of another suspected terrorist insurgent on charges of launching several bomb attacks in the province. Officials have found traces of explosives on his body and he was taken to the southern army head office for questioning.

Meanwhile:

Motorcyclists in Yala and Betong towns have been told to leave their seats up and not to place crash helmets in the front baskets of their bikes when they park in public places to help the security forces spot possible motorcycle bombs. The decision followed a bomb explosion which wounded six people, including three policemen, in Yala on Monday. The attackers attached a homemade bomb to a parked motorcycle.

Pol Maj-Gen Sayan Krasaesaen, Yala provincial police chief, said it was a common tactic for terrorists militants to hide an explosive device underneath a motorcycle seat, or in the front basket and cover it with a crash helmet. There are 10 public places in Yala town where police are strictly enforcing the new rule, he said.
