Fatah accuses Hamas of using its men as 'human shields'
The Fatah movement on Thursday accused Hamas of using seized Fatah operatives as "human shields" in the face of Israeli attacks in Gaza.

Three civilians said to be among Palestinians killed in IDF strikes in Gaza after terror groups fired a long-range rocket towards Ashkelon. Army accuses militants of intentionally basing themselves in civilian areas

This after a Fatah operative being held in a Hamas structure was killed in an IDF strike. The operative was arrested on Wednesday after returning to the Strip from Egypt through the Rafah border crossing.

At the center of the current turmoil between factions is Abdullah Kishta, a 27-year-old Fatah operative, which Fatah claims was wanted by both the IDF and Hamas. Kishta fled Gaza after Hamas' takeover in June of last year, and took advantage of the return of some 2,000 Palestinian pilgrims to the Strip by hiding amongst them and infiltrating from Egypt.

However, Hamas men who had anticipated infiltration attempts by wanted Fatah men located Kishta in the crowd and arrested him upon his entry to the Strip. Kishta was arrested along with about seven additional Fatah operatives, who were scattered amongst various Hamas facilities throughout the Strip. He himself was transferred into custody in Hamas' outpost in Tel Sultan, and killed in an IDF attack in the area.

Eyewitnesses reported that Kishta's body was transferred to a hospital with his hands and legs still bound, a remnant of the 'treatment' he received prior to his death at the Hamas facilities. The Fatah movement was quick to accuse Hamas of using imprisoned Fatah operatives as "human shields" against Israeli strikes.

Fatah spokesman Fahmi Zarir even claimed that Hamas had evacuated the outposts and left behind Fatah operatives, who fell victim to Israel's attacks. "This phenomenon is a continuation of the ugly and immoral policies employed by Hamas against Fatah men. Hamas gangs evacuated the Rafah outpost, but left there the Fatah prisoners who were forced to deal with the Israeli air force strikes, which resulted in the wounding of 18 of them," claimed Zarir.

He added that "this is terrorism and ugly racism by Hamas, which is emulating the Israeli style of action. Whether it be abductions or the destruction of homes and the use of detainees as human shields, and the humiliation, as is what happens with Fatah men."
Stories like this give me warm glow.

#6  Racism, because racism is the new black, so to speak; when you yell "racism", it presses all the buttons of the "international community".

This word is disconnected from any meaning, in its PC acceptance, it's just means "Ultimate Evil", mostly because of WWII, and the way the commies cultural or political used that dark History as a springboard for their own propaganda war.

Of course, here it is particularly ridicule, because usually, it's usable *only* against whitey, no matter what, but the paleos are so used at abusing that strategy (posing as victims, pressing the West's buttons, and they're savvy at detecting them, IIRC, right after the dutroux scandal, they accused israeli soldiers of child rape), that they don't even see the stoopidity and inanity of that one.

Afghanistan
Mullah Omar tells Mullah Mansoor Dadullah "You're Fired!"
Confirmed at Long War Journal
At the end of 2007, the Afghan Taliban made a radical leadership change that has sparked controversy in the ranks of the terror group. On Dec. 29, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed issued a statement that Mullah Mansoor Dadullah, the commander for southern Afghanistan, was relieved of his command by Taliban leader Mullah Omar. Dadullah stated he had no knowledge of the dismissal and claimed it was a "conspiracy by my enemies." Omar responded by issuing a signed statement ordering Dadullah's firing.

Omar's dismissal of Mansoor was published on Voice of Jihad, a well-trafficked jihadi Internet forum, ThreatsWatch's Nick Grace informed The Long War Journal. The release was signed by Mullah Mohammad Omar Mujahid, the Ameer al Mu’meneen, or the commander of the faithful.

"Mullah Mansoor Dadullah is not [in] obedience to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in his actions and has carried out activities which were against the rules of Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan," said Omar. "So the Decision Authorities [or Shura Majlis, executive council] of Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan have removed Mansoor Dadullah from his post and he will no longer be serving the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in [any way] and no Taliban will obey his orders any more."

Omar's orders also call for Mansoor's followers to disassociate themselves with the former commander. "This decision only applies to Mansoor Dadullah, all other friends of Mullah Dadullah Shahed will be carrying out their Jihad duties for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, all the sympathizers of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan end their relationship with Mansoor Dadullah," said Omar.

Like the original statement announcing Mansoor's dismissal, Omar's statement did not include specifics on Mansoor's failures of "obedience to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan."

Mansoor had contacted the Times of India on Dec. 30 denying he was dismissed. "It's not true that Mullah Omar kicked me out of the Taliban," Mansoor told the Indian newspaper by telephone. "If Mullah Omar wanted me to leave the Taliban, then he would send me the message and I would put down my weapons because he is our top commander." Dadullah admitted he was unable to contact Omar.

Mansoor served as commander of the Taliban's southern front in Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan, Zabul, Nimruz, and Farah provinces. He succeeded his brother, Mullah Dadullah Ahkund, who was killed by British special forces in May 2007.

Afghan police seize over half tonne of heroin
Afghan police have seized more than half a tonne of heroin and opium in the eastern province of Nangarhar, the interior ministry said Wednesday. In the biggest seizure in months, anti-drug police found 400 kilograms of heroin on Tuesday and detained an armed man linked to the drugs, the ministry said in a statement. It did not give further details.

Nearly 250 kilograms of opium - the raw ingredient to make heroin - was seized in a separate raid in the same province, the statement said. More than 20 kilos of chemicals used in making heroin were also seized, it added.

Afghanistan produces more than 90 percent of the world’s opium. Despite internationally backed efforts to cut the drugs trade, Afghanistan’s opium production grew by 34 percent in 2007, according to a UN survey. The government says the illicit drug trade fuels the insurgency mainly waged by Taliban militants whose regime was toppled in a US-led invasion in late 2001 for sheltering Al-Qaeda leaders such as Osama bin Laden.

Five Taliban killed in premature explodulation
Five suspected Taliban militants were killed when a suicide car bomb they were building went off prematurely in the southern province of Kandahar, police said on Wednesday. “These men were killed while trying to build a suicide car bomb to target and kill innocent people but it killed themselves,” provincial police chief Sayed Agha Saqeb said after the blast on Tuesday. He said intelligence reports suggested the five were Taliban. Taliban militants have stepped up the use of Iraq-style suicide blasts in their anti-government insurgency over the past two years.

Commander killed: Separately, a remote-controlled roadside bomb killed a former anti-Soviet militia commander and two bodyguards just outside Kandahar city on Wednesday, Saqeb said. “The bomb was remote-control and Taliban were behind it,” Saqeb added. Two policemen were killed by a similar device as they patrolled along the Pakistani border on Tuesday, a local police official said. Kandahar border police chief Mohammad Raziq blamed the bombing on the Taliban.

The Interior Ministry said this week that nearly 1,000 Afghan civilians were killed in 2007, the bloodiest year since the toppling of the Taliban regime in late 2001. Another 1,000 Afghan security forces — most of them poorly-armed and under-paid police — were killed in last year’s violence, the ministry said. More than 60,000 foreign troops, mainly in a UN-mandated NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, are based here to battle the Taliban insurgency and help train Afghan security forces.

Al-Q in the Dark Continent claims Algierian bombing
I know. I was s'prized too. Or not.
Whoa! I gotta go lie down!
Al-Qaeda North Africa wing claimed responsibility on Wednesday for the deadly suicide bombing in Algeria according to a recording aired by Al Arabiya television. The speaker who identified himself as Salah Abu Mohammad, a spokesman of the group, said a suicide bomber rammed a truck laden with at least 500 kg (1100 lbs) of explosives into a police facility.

Algerian Interior Ministry said three people were killed and seven injured in the first major attack in Algeria since a twin bombing in the capital Algiers killed at least 37 people on Dec. 11, including 17 United Nations staff.

More details on foiled Rotterdam terror attack.
Dutch daily De Telegraaf reported this morning that the three arrested terrorists where planning to attack the Rotterdam new years party. The newspaper got this information from sources close to the ongoing investigation. Next to the story in the Telegraaf we see more details coming up. An other story indicates the "suspected" terrorists wanted to use explosives to create a blood bath among the 15000 people attending the party. Dutch authorities seem to have been informed in advance as they had double the amount of police officers on duty than for a normal new years eve. An other event was also filmed that evening as a group of people was arrested at gunpoint (not usual way for arrests in the peace loving Low Lands) on one of Rotterdam's bridges.

India-Pakistan
25 militants killed in S Waziristan
At least 25 militants have been killed in two days of fighting between security forces and the Taliban in South Waziristan, officials said on Wednesday. Military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad said the Frontier Corps (FC) had ceased fire on the request of a local jirga.

Arshad said four FC personnel, who were kidnapped in the Luddha area on Tuesday, had not been recovered so far, adding that 30 to 35 suspects had been taken into custody in this connection. A curfew has been imposed in Parachinar as clashes between Sunni and Shia groups, NNI reported.

An army Cobra gunship helicopter crash-landed near Thal, Parachinar, due to a technical malfunction on Wednesday, an ISPR statement said. The pilot and co-pilot were safe.

#2  My question is was the technical malfunction caused by poor maintenance or small arms fire?
The greatest probability would be technical malfunction due to "In'sallah" maintenance. That would be more likely than the talibunnies getting lucky and actually hitting anything they fired at. The reason they NEED roadside bombs is because they're such lousy shots.

Eleven more die in sectarian festivities in Kurram Agency
Around eleven people including seven non-local Taliban were killed and thirteen injured during the ongoing sectarian clashes in Kurram Agency with fighting continuing for twelve consecutive days.

According to details, the curfew imposed in Parachinar after Nov 16 last year has not been relaxed resulting in locals facing problems.

The main highway of Tull and Parachinar has remained closed for the last 48 days due to which food and medicine are in short supply in Kurram Agency and road links between tribes have been disconnected.

Sources said that clashes since November 16 had killed more than 300 people and injured more than 600. They said hundreds had been displaced and losses had amounted to millions of rupees. Attempts are being made for a ceasefire between Hangu and Orakzai tribes by a visiting jirga, however, the tribes have expressed their dissatisfaction over government measures.

Military reinforcements reach Swat
More military reinforcements reached Swat on Wednesday morning as the ongoing operation against militants intensified in the valley, sources said.

A curfew has been in place in Malakand and Swat districts since Tuesday evening, primarily to prevent attacks on troop movements. However, the curfew was lifted in most areas of Swat, including Kabal, Kanjoo and Malakand districts, at 11am on Wednesday. Peshawar Corps Commander Lt General Masood Aslam arrived in Swat for a short visit and met army officers to review progress in the ongoing operation, sources said.

Resident’s checkpost: In the Shaur area of Matta tehsil, residents established a security checkpost to block the re-entry of members of the Taliban ousted in the military operation. The checkpost is being manned by armed locals, who will patrol the area to help security forces restore the writ of the government, a resident said. The decision to establish the security post was taken by a 29-member jirga made up of elders and influential people, residents said.

Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen, believed to be Taliban militants, broke into three local hotels in the Sambat area of Matta, on Tuesday night and smashed television sets installed there. They also warned the hotel owners of dire consequences if television sets were seen in their hotels again.

Iraq
Baquba Awakening Council leader killed by suicide squeegeeman
Some detail for yesterday's story
Initial reports of a suicide bombing in Baquba on Tuesday indicated the assailant was a woman, but it has now been confirmed the suicide bomber was in fact a male terrorist, the US military said in a statement on Wednesday. The identity of the bomber is not yet known, the statement added.
"Anybody recognize this doinker?"
"Ummm... It don't ring any bells."
"New one on me..."
"Looks like it might be Libyan?"
When women have hairy chests and the men dress as women it’s sometimes hard to identify bombers. In this case the bombers swance was found in a discarded can of Vienna sausage. It stood out because it was so much smaller than the sausages!
The statement also said the suicide bomber reportedly blew himself up after he jumped onto the hood of a car being driven by a Concerned Local Citizen (CLC).
An Iraqi version of a squeegeeman.
The explosion killed the driver of the car and three other Iraqis, while injuring six innocent civilians, the statement noted. The Iraqi story also indicated that among those who were killed was one of the US-sponsored Al-Sahwa (Awakening) council leaders in Baquba, Sheikh Abu Sajaad.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli air-ground attack kills six Paleoactivists
Israeli warplanes and tanks struck Paleotargets east of Gaza city on Wednesday killing six activists, medical sources said.

The sources said the Israeli fire targeted fighters of three factions who were stationed in the district of Al-Shujaieh, adding that seven Palestinians were also wounded in the air-ground attack. The aircraft launched three strikes on the location, simultaneously with the firing of volleys of shells from Israeli-manned tanks, entrenched nearby.

Izz-Eddine Al-Qassam Brigades, military wing of the Islamic movement Hamas, said in a statement that three of the gunmen who were killed in the attack were members of the group. Al-Nasser Salah-Eddine, the military arm of the Peoples Resistance Committees identified two of the slain guerrillas as affiliates. The other slain one was linked to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the military arm of Fatah.

Israel has recently stepped up military attacks on the strip saying the strikes were in retaliation for recurring missile offensives by the Palestinian factions in the region. Tel Aviv has described Hamas leadership in Gaza as a hostile target and vowed to "eliminate" it.

Purity of the arms deal I guess.

#3  Seattle radio ABC affiliate KOMO this morning said that 3 of the dead were women. Although not explicitly stated, the tone of the report was such that you could infer they were innocents. This article doesn't make that inference at all.

#5  With a kiss she gave her promise,
to be constant as the stars above,
every soldier knows she's kept her promise,
and she has been faithful to her love!

Underneath the lamp post by the brigade
standing all alone every night you'll see her wait,
for this is the place a vow was made
and breezes sing her serenade . . .

"Oh promise you'll be true,
fare thee well Lili Marlene,
'till I return to you,
fare thee well Lili Marlene, "

#6  Click here for a RealAudio version of Lili Marlene

From Wikipedia: Dietrich became one of the first celebrities to raise war bonds. She entertained troops on the front lines. Dietrich was known to have strong political convictions and the mind to speak them. Like many Weimar era German entertainers, she was a staunch anti-Nazi who despised antisemitism.

She recorded a number of anti-Nazi records in German for the OSS, including "Lili Marleen." She sang for the Allied troops on the front lines in Algeria and France, and went into Germany with Generals Gavin and Patton. When asked why she had done this, in spite of the obvious danger of being within a few kilometers of German lines, she replied, "aus Anstand" — "it was the decent thing to do."

Dietrich was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the U.S. Government for her war work. She was also made a chevalier (later commandeur) of the Légion d'Honneur by the French government.
