Afghanistan
Afghanistan expels Briton for Taliban talks
United Nations officials were today lobbying the Afghan government to reverse its decision to expel two diplomats, one British and the other Irish, accused of holding talks with Taliban militants Muslim terrorists.
But can't we all be friends?
President Hamid Karzai's spokesman, Humayun Hamidzada, said the two men - named in reports as the acting European Union mission head, Michael Semple, and a senior UN official, Mervyn Patterson - were "involved in some activities that were not their jobs".
You don't say
A spokesman for the UN mission in Afghanistan, Aleem Siddique, said the two men would leave tomorrow as ordered but described the incident as a "misunderstanding".
Right...
He insisted that the UN "don't talk to the Taliban, full stop" and expressed his hope that the men could return "as soon as possible".
Send some replacements, these two are done.
The UN protest came as the Daily Telegraph reported that MI6 agents held discussions with the Taliban on "several occasions over the summer". Two weeks ago Gordon Brown told the House of Commons: "We will not enter into any negotiations with these people."

The Afghan government, and particularly Karzai, have voiced a growing interest in meeting with Taliban leaders to try to persuade them to renounce violence and enter politics. Splitting the extremist organisation is seen as one way of helping to bring the bloody insurgency to an end.
Talks with the Taliban? How's that working for you?

Two Britons arrested in Afghanistan on security charges: officials
Two British nationals have been arrested in Afghanistan for posing threats to national security, Afghan officials said Tuesday. The arrests were announced earlier but no nationalities given. "They are British and were arrested five days ago," a government official who asked not to be identified was quoted as saying. This was confirmed by another official who also did not want his name used.

#2  This might be linked to the original article:
One is a high-ranking UN employee, Briton Mervyn Patterson, the other is acting head of the EU mission in Afghanistan, Irishman Michael Semple.

The expulsion order follows claims that the men had held talks with the Taleban in Helmand province in the south.

The Afghan government has said the pair must leave by Thursday, and the UN has reportedly booked a flight.

Perhaps their activities were undermining the authority of the Afghan government.

Insurgents kill three in Baidoa
(SomaliNet) Insurgents attacked a Somali regional police chief's residence, killing his daughter and two bodyguards, witnesses said Tuesday, AFP reports. They said the residence of Aden Hashi Gabo, the police chief of the provincial town of Baidoa, about 250 miles (150 kilometres) northwest of the capital Mogadishu, came under attack on Monday. "The insurgents fired machineguns and grenades into his house, killing his daughter and two bodyguards," said Hassan Sheikh Mumin, a resident.

1 policeman killed, 4 wounded in attacks in Chechnya
A policeman was killed and four others were wounded in attacks in restive Chechnya, the Russian republic's Interior Ministry said Sunday. The policeman was shot late Saturday in a central area of Grozny, the Chechen capital, the ministry said. Two other shooting attacks, each wounding two officers, took place Saturday in other areas of Chechnya, the ministry said.

Major fighting between separatist rebels and Russian forces died down early in the decade, but insurgents continue to mount small hit-and-run attacks on police and soldiers. Chechnya is also plagued with criminal activity and some attacks on police are believed to be connected to gangs rather than rebels.

#3  I'd like to hear comments from the likes of Ptah and John Frum on this post.

Hindus burning Christian churches? Killing a Christian here and there? Why?

Are the gods and goddesses of Hindu upset at the Christians? For what f*ckin' reason? Are Christians persecuting Hinus in India?

Are Hindus STILL p*ssed off about a British Christian putting a stop to the barbaric (no PC here) Hindu practice of suttee? Call it an early Christian Christmas gift to Hindus. Where I come from we call it "the gift of civilization". It's a gift that keeps on giving - if you assume the barbarians practice it. Sir General Charles Napier wasn't asking you to eat cows or stop worshipping dozens of gods and goddesses. He didn't care about that. Napier was blunt: stop ma burning your widows alive. Hindus think maybe he was demanding too much from the esteemed Hindu culture? Really?

Should I surmise Hindus want to practice suttee AND persecute Christians (all 2% of them)? I'm thinking India has got a bigger problem with it's 15-20% mulsim population, but hey...it's so much easier to bust chops on a 2% Christian population (who turn the other cheek) than 15-20% muslim population taught to hate Hindus from birth, right? Oh, you Lions of Shiva! So brave. Do Hindu text books say: Muslims - not Christians - have brought us so much "civilization" ? Re-check your history, Abu.

Spit.

When I read that Christian churches are burning in India I think to myself: What was St. Xaiver thinking? What was Mother Teresa thinking to spend so much time in India? Such a waste of time and talent.

To you f*ckin' Hindus who think you're so tough to kill Christians...here's something to think while I about paraphrase Sir Charles Napier: "So you say it's your Hindu custom to pick on the "little Christian guy" in the neighborhood. Fine. Then I say follow your custom, Lions of Shiva. Meanwhile, my bretheren will prepare accordingly. My bretheren call themselves vigilante. You follow your custom. Then my vigilantes will follow theirs".

15-year-old bomber stopped at Bhutto rally
POLICE in Pakistan have stopped a 15-year-old boy they say was carrying a bomb made of dynamite and nails from gettnig into a rally by opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

The boy got past the first of four security checkpoints set up outside the rally in the northwestern city of Peshawar but was caught at the second, said police officer Rahim Shah, according to the Associated Press.

In October, suicide bombers struck a parade celebrating Ms Bhutto's return from exile, killing more than 140 people in the southern city of Karachi.

STF guns down two suspected LeT militants
The state Special Task Force (STF) gunned down two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists in an encounter near Central Food Processing Research Centre on the Lucknow-Deva Road on Sunday morning. Besides two AK-47 rifles, four magazines filled with cartridges, 10 hand grenades, one detonator, and one belt meant for strapping explosives and a small battery, the STF also recovered a map written in Urdu from the terrorists. A source in the STF said the suspected terror module had infiltrated into India from the Nepal border.

When asked if Chief Minister Mayawati was the target of the militants, Additional Director General of Police (STF) Brij Lal said: “The map shows the area housing the chief minister’s residence. The police barrier around the area can also be seen. But the target of the slain terrorists is still a matter of investigation.” State DGP Vikram Singh also visited the site of encounter in the morning.

Lal said STF SSP Amitabh Yash had received a tip-off about LeT’s presence in Lucknow recently. Subsequently, a team was constituted to nab the militants. At 5.50 am, the STF intercepted the two terrorists travelling in a Maruti car (UP-32A/4374) on the Barabanki-Lucknow Road.

The car was coming from Barabanki. “The STF team tried to stop the vehicle, the terrorists did not stop. As STF officers gave chase, the terrorists opened fire and the STF retaliated. After some time, the two terrorists emerged, firing and raising the slogan ‘Lashkar-e-Taiba zindabad’. They died on the spot,” Lal added. He further said that both the militants were “fidayeen”.

Pakistan army destroys militants' houses
Security forces have demolished the houses of two wanted militants, in the latest advance against pro-Taliban militants in the troubled Swat valley. Neither of the two militants -- Mehmood Khan, or brother Hidayat Khan -- was in the Kabal district house at the time of the attack. A strict curfew remains in place in Kabal for two days now and the adjoining Kanju Guljabba Chowk area, even though it has been relaxed in the rest of the country between seven am and six pm. It comes after security forces arrested fourteen more militants in overnight raids around the valley.

Hizbul Mujahideen suffered most among rebel outfits in Kashmir in 2007
(KUNA) -- Police in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday said Pakistan-based outfit Hizbul-Mujahideen (HM) was the worst sufferer among the insurgent groups in Kashmir in 2007 with the killing of 34 top commanders and 307 cadres in encounters.
Hizbul Mujahideen received a severe setback in 2007 having lost 34 top commanders and 307 cadres in the encounters with Indian security forces.
HM received a severe setback in 2007 having lost 34 top commanders and 307 cadres in the encounters with Indian security forces, a top police officer of Jammu and Kashmir told reporters today, news agency Press Trust of India reported. "Insurgency in Kashmir is on the decline and HM cadres have gone underground," he said.

Other insurgent groups whose "commanders" were killed in 2007 included Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Al-Badr, Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami (HuJI), Tahreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM), Al-Umar, Jamail-ul-Mujahideen (JuM), JK Freedom Force (JKFF), Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM), Hizb-e-Islami (HeI) and Al-Barq. As many as 77 top commanders have been killed by security forces till November 2007, which includes 17 commanders of LeT, 13 of JeM, 10 of HuJI and three of Al-Badr. "This year HM lost one operation chief commander, four divisional commanders, seven district commanders, nine tehsil commanders, 12 area commanders and company commander," the officer said.

Among the insurgent leaders killed in 2007 include Bilal Afghani, chief commander of Al-Badr on December 3 in Budgham followed by Qari Umar (deputy chief of HuJI for Jammu and Kashmir), Abu Hamza (chief operation commander of JuM), Qasim Bhatti (chief operation commander of LeT), Iajaz Ahmed Chopan (chief operation commander of HM), Aby Tallah (operation commander of LeT's Jammu region), Mohammad Younis (commander-in-chief, HMPPR) and Mohd Khalid-ur-Rehman (LeT's India operations head), the officer said.

During the past two years, 182 rebel commanders were killed in Jammu and Kashmir and of these 75 commanders were of HM, 49 of LeT, 18 of JeM, 11 of Al-Badr and 20 of HuJI, the officer said. In 2006, out of 105 commanders killed, HM lost 41, LeT 32, HuJI 10, JeM five and Al-Badr four. In 2005, HM lost 31 top commanders, followed by 12 of LeT, nine of Al-Badr, seven of JeM, two commanders each of HuM and HuJI, besides one each of TuM, JuM, HeI and Al-Barq, the officer informed. In 2004, HM had lost three chief operation commanders -- Gazi Shahab-uddin, Gazi Naseer-uddin, Saif-ul-Islam, besides deputy chiefs -- Abbas Malik and Shakeel Ansari, the news agency said.

Four soldiers among 10 killed in suicide attack
(AKI/DAWN) - A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a Pakistan army convoy on Sunday, killing four soldiers and six other people in the troubled Swat valley in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP). The attack occurred in the Mingora area of the valley. According to official sources, 29 people were injured. The convoy was returning after carrying out operations against militants in various areas.

Official sources said that soon after the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and even police personnel were asked to keep away. The curfew in place in the valley had been relaxed in that part of the Swat district because of Eid al-Adha or the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice. Civilians were also hit as the bomber struck the convoy on a busy route. Witnesses said the vehicle used in the attack was completely destroyed while an army van, a rickshaw and a lorry were damaged. Officials said the place was strewn with bodies and human limbs. “We are still ascertaining the exact cause of the explosion, but preliminary information collected by us suggests that it was a suicide bombing,” said an official of the Mingora police station.

Pakistani forces launched a major offensive in Swat Valley in October against Islamic militants loyal to the hardline cleric Maulana Fazalullah who has tried to bring Taliban-style Islamic laws to the region. The army said it had detained four of the cleric's followers hours before Sunday's attack. Sunday's attack follows one on Friday in which more than 50 people were killed after a suicide bomber blew himself up in a mosque near Peshawar, also in NWFP.

Local villagers protest against Palnoo mosque siege
SRINAGAR: A day after five civilians were rescued and three militants killed in a 35-hour stand-off in Palnoo village of Kulgam district, thousands of people on Tuesday staged protest demonstrations in the area against the damage caused to the mosque and alleged atrocities by the security forces.

As the midnight offensive launched by 62 Rashtriya Rifles and Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operations Group ended with the killing of three top Hizbul Mujahideen and the safe return of five civilians taken hostage by them, the people went on the rampage on learning that the mosque in which the militants were hiding had been damaged in the fight. They locals alleged that the security forces had “let loose a reign of terror against the population.”

A complete shutdown was observed in the area. The authorities, fearing a strong reaction, had sealed all the roads leading to Palnoo. The entry points from Bijbehara, Yaripora and Balsoo were sealed and the people were not even allowed to walk on the road.

As the crowd demanding a “honourable burial” for the militants surged and sought to reach Palnoo, it led to a clash with the police. The security forces then resorted to lathi-charge and later used tear smoke shells to disperse the crowd. Pitched battles continued and at least 15 civilians were injured.

A group of photo-journalists complained that they were prevented by the police from discharging their duties and were attacked by the SOG personnel. The injured were identified as Tassaduq Rashid, Zahoor Sodagar, Fida Hussain, Javed Shah and Basharat Ahmad.

A local, Murtaza Ahmad, said the SOG personnel looted their houses and beat up people ruthlessly. Even as the police stopped people from converging, many thousands joined the funeral prayers of the militants who were buried in the local graveyard.

DIG South Kashmir H.K. Lohia refuted the locals’ allegations and said some vested interests, including Hurriyat leaders, were trying instigating the people. No major damage was caused to the mosque, he said and added that that the people should also realise that the militants had kept the civilians hostage for two days and made them human shields.

A Hizbul Mujahideen spokesman, in a statement, paid tributes to the slain militants. “They preferred martyrdom to surrender and that speaks about the devotion of the Mujahideen to the cause,” the statement said.

Two of the hostages who were rescued narrated their ordeal while talking to reporters and said that they had a tough time. Gowhar Ahmad, an MCA student, said he had come out to take food but was not allowed by the Army to go back. “They [the Army] announced on the public address system that Gowher fainted and cannot return,” he said adding that another came out saying that he wanted water.

Another young hostage Adil Najar then followed suit. The lighting arrangements were then enhanced, after which the forces burst tear gas shells into the mosque.

Another hostage, Abdul Ahad Mir, came out and cried “we are civilians please do not fire.” He said the Army observed restraint on that occasion and did not fire.

Several separatist organisations have condemned the incident. The Harkat Jehadi Islami, the Jaish-e-Mohammad and the Al Madinah regiment have in their separate statements paid tributes to the slain militants.

#1  I find it shocking that the people of Srinagar think that the terrorists have achieved "martyrdom" when in fact they are nothing more than kidnappers holding innocent people as hostages. I don't understand how these terrorists have gained sympathy from the people when they have kidnapped one of their own. What is more outrageous is that they are more concerned about the destruction to the mosque during the shootout rather than concern for the five poor souls held hostage in the mosque. Is religion more important than human life? These people might be angry with the SOG personnel for having looted their houses but how could they have been so misdirected as to join hands with the militants? Wonder if these people would have been so supportive if the militants had blown up one of their near and dear. Would they have still called the militants "martyrs" of the noble cause and held processions? At this rate it will be better if India accedes Kashmir to Pakistan. We will be better off without these people. They are truly a drain on the national resources.

#2  SOG have better things to do than loot houses.

The separatists accuse the police of atrocities so that local area police (who won't act against the terrorists like the J+K SOG units) are deployed instead.

Many of the "separatists" actually don't really want accession to Pakistan. That would deprive them of the generous Indian aid and the secret ISI funding they simultaneously receive.

The gravy train would stop. That is why you have Kashmiri politicians who, when in opposition spout slogans about 'azadi' (independence) and meet with the Pak Ambassador but when in Government are pro-Delhi.

There are strategic reasons for keeping Jammu and Kashmir within India. Without the shield of the Himmalayas, the Gangetic plains would be vulnerable to China and Pakistan. By keeping the high ground, India shields its heartland.

It will never hand over J+K to Pakistan.

#3  Not to mention that once Pakistan were to acquire the whole of Jammu and Kashmir, they'd immediately begin working on the next bit of India. The caliphate must be expanded to encompass the whole of Mankind, after all.

Suicide bomber kills four at Iraq funeral
A suicide bomber blew himself up in the midst of a funeral procession on Tuesday in the Iraqi city of Baquba, killing four people from a group fighting Al-Qaeda, a French news agency correspondent at the scene reported. Among those killed was Haj Farhan al-Baharzawi, the local head of the Brigades of 20th Revolution, a former insurgent group turned ally of the US military, the correspondent said.

Iraq''s Mosul governor survives IED blast
(KUNA) -- Duraid Mohammad Kshmoula, governor of Mosul province, survived Tuesday an assassination attempt when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded near his convoy in the city. A security source told KUNA that the governor was safe but two of his escorts were injured due to the incident occurring at Gabat area, north of the city. On the wake of the new security improvement in the country, terrorists decided to remind Iraq's government and people of their presence, striking hard with a booby-trapped at attack at Beiji area today. The Beiji attack caused the death of about 25 people and the injury of some 90 others.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka sinks suicide boats
SRI Lanka's navy has destroyed 11 Tamil Tiger vessels including two suicide boats, killing an estimated 40 insurgents, the military says. A dozen navy fast-attack craft sank four of the rebel vessels, helicopter gunships and Israeli-made Kfir fighter jets sank another five and two rebel suicide vessels were destroyed when they rammed a navy boat which was badly damaged.

"They were involved in arms smuggling," said military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara. "In total, 11 Tiger boats were destroyed. We can't say exactly, but we estimate around 40 Tigers were killed," he said.

The military gave no details of any navy casualties from the clash, the latest in a series of land and sea battles. There were no independent accounts of what had happened and the Tigers were not immediately available for comment. The remaining five rebel boats sped back to Tiger-controlled territory, Brig. Nanayakkara said.

The clash came as thousands of Sri Lankans marked the third anniversary of the 2004 tsunami, which battered two-thirds of the island's coastline and left 35,000 dead or missing. The military has reported killing hundreds of Tigers in recent weeks, with the death toll from renewed fighting well over 5000 since early last year. However, analysts say both sides tend to exaggerate enemy losses and play down their own.

Also today, a Sri Lankan judge freed two foreign television reporters held for two days by police while making a documentary about people detained under emergency laws.

Sri Lanka detains French TV crew
Sri Lanka detained two foreign television journalists and 11 locals from a Tamil family they were filming in the island's south, police said Tuesday.

The two-member crew of France 24 were detained overnight at Ratgama, 105 kilometres (65 miles) south of the capital, after they were taken into custody by the military on Monday evening, a police official in the area said.

He said the duo were taken Tuesday before a judge who ordered that they be handed over to the police Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) for further investigations.

Sri Lanka's independent Free Media Movement (FMM) said they wanted the crew released immediately and accused the authorities of overreacting and suppressing the right to information.
A female journalist and TV cameraman from France 24 were filming a Tamil family visiting their detained relatives on Christmas Eve, the FMM said.

Police said they detained the two foreign nationals as well as 11 Tamils and their driver after the cameraman was accused of filming a military checkpoint outside the Boosa detention centre.

"This is another instance of the authorities overreacting on the people’s right to know, ignoring that the media has a right to report in a creative way on matters concerning arrests and detention.

"The FMM does not consider videoing a road block as a national security issue and expresses its serious concern of detaining a TV crew and a whole family on a minor incident," the media rights group said.

The group noted that the government can detain suspects for 48 hours without being charged in line with tough emergency laws.

There was no immediate comment from France 24. The Boosa detention centre was reopened recently by the military in the wake of mass arrests of minority Tamils as part of a crackdown against separatist Tamil Tiger guerrillas.
