Seventeen civilians, including children, were killed and around 30 others wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up near a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) convoy in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, police said. Soldiers with NATOs International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were also wounded in the attack, some of them seriously, an ISAF spokesman said.
The bomber was on foot and blew himself up as a convoy of ISAF troops were passing through a bazaar in the town of Dehrawood in the southern province of Uruzgan, provincial police chief General Mohammad Qasem said. There was a suicide bombing. Seventeen people, all of them civilians, have been killed and around 30 others were injured, he told said. Some of the dead were schoolchildren, he said.
ISAF said that it was most likely a suicide attack. There are ISAF and civilian casualties, spokesman Major John Thomas said in Kabul, adding that the ISAF soldiers were badly wounded.
A spokeswoman for the NATO-led force in Kabul said that six Afghan civilians were killed and 13 wounded. Seven soldiers from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were also hurt, she said.
This is an indiscriminate use of a Taliban extremist bombings, which have killed and injured both civilians and soldiers, said Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Smith, the ISAF spokesman in the south.
The NATO-led force did not give out the nationalities of its casualties and would not confirm that the blast was in Uruzgan, where most ISAF troops are Australian or Dutch. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the extremist Taliban movement, which is waging an insurgency backed by Al-Qaeda, has carried out similar attacks.
Tuesdays was the deadliest suicide attack since the one in Kabul on June 17 that killed 35 people, most of whom were police trainers.
Separately, a soldier with the US-led coalition in Afghanistan died of wounds suffered earlier in a shooting on a military base in the west of the country, the force said Tuesday. The shooting was in Guzara district in the Herat province, the same area where two Afghan soldiers were killed and several other troops were wounded when another opened fire on a military base on Monday. An investigation into the events surrounding the soldiers death is being conducted, the coalition said in a statement. A military official who wished to remain unnamed said that two US advisers were also wounded in the latest shooting.
Taliban insurgents have increased the number of suicide attacks against the nearly 50,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan this year after suffering heavy casualties in conventional attacks. Some 6,000 people have been killed, including 1,500 civilians, in Afghanistan in the last 18 months.

Dozens of civilians have been killed and hundreds more were wounded in Mogadishu since the interim government began the search operations a week ago.

(SomaliNet) Five government soldiers including the commander of the police station in Dharkenley district, southwest of the capital were wounded in a bomb explosion which occurred in the settlement overnight, sources say on Tuesday.
A bomb was hurled at a car carrying the police station commander and a number of his security guards as they were patrolling near Macmacanka tea-shops in Dharkenley district, according to the district commissioner Abdulahi Moalim. The injury of the commander was not serious and now he is in hospital, we will find those who were behind the attack, said Moalim. The security forces reached the area of the blast and began investigations to find the attacker.
Meanwhile, around 8:00pm local time last night two explosions happened in Bulo-Hubey area near the main airport of Mogadishu. Residents told Somalinet that the target of the blast seemed to be on the Ethiopian soldiers who yesterday searched several houses and found weapons. There is no immediate casualty on the Ethiopians.
Early this morning the Ethiopian forces raided a mosque near the area of the last nights explosion arresting several worshipers.

Moroccan police have detained 15 Al Qaeda suspected members who were plotting to blow up sensitive targets in the North African country, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The main Arabic daily Al Massa, quoting security sources, said four of the 15 suspects came from Al Qaedas base in Algeria and had sneaked into Morocco to prepare dangerous and sophisticated terror attacks. Morocco, citing an intelligence warning of an imminent attack, last week raised its security alert to the highest level and deployed more than 5,000 police and paramilitary gendarmes to guard strategic points.
Assabah, another Arabic daily, said separately that a Moroccan anti-terrorist police squad had arrested three Al Qaeda suspects who were preparing bomb attacks in Morocco. The newspaper said the three were detained after a French intelligence tip-off that they intended to link up with other Al Qaeda members from Algeria and Mauritania and carry out attacks in Morocco. Asked to comment, an Interior Ministry official said: We are only aware of the arrest of 13 Syrians who came from Algeria illegally to try to reach Spain. They are illegal migrants.

An alleged activist of outlawed Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) yesterday received bullet injuries during a raid by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at a house in the city's Mirpur area and was later arrested along with his wife.
Rab also seized a pistol, several bullets during a two-hour raid at the house on the ground floor of a three-storey building in Block-E, Road no 1, Mirpur-1.
The elite force identified the bullet-hit JMB suspect as Shakhawat, but the name of his wife could not be known. The owner of the house said Shakhawat and Saiful rented the house on May 1, identifying themselves as cousins.
Local said they heard sounds of two gunshots from the house and saw a bullet-injured person was being taken away from there.
Rab officials from Mymensingh and Dhaka jointly conducted the raid at 9:45am following information extracted from Saiful, who was arrested for killing Rafiqul Islam, a madrasa teacher, in Muktagachha, on Monday.
Three criminals, including Saiful and Sagor, gunned down Rafiqul while he was going to the madrasa at Dullachandi in Muktagachha from his house in Binnakuri on Monday morning. Local caught Saiful and Sagor and handed them over to Rab.

A speedy trial court here yesterday sentenced two Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants to 10 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) each in the August 17 serial blasts case. Mohsin Khan, 27, son of Late Rusmot Ali of Kaziatal village in Muradnagar upazila and Abdul Hye, 27, son of Late Abdul Malek of Asadnagar village of Bhrahmanpara upazila in Comilla, were convicted for their active participation in exploding bombs at six spots here on August 17, 2005.
The two were teachers of Sengram Dakhil Madrassa in Jaintapur upazila. While pronouncing the verdict, Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Biplob Goswami also fined each of them Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer one year more RI.
Earlier, the convicts admitted their complicity with the incident of serial blasts before the District Judge's Court here. Kotwali police sub-inspector (SI) Chand Miah submitted charge-sheet before the magistrate's court on November 17, 2005. Police also submitted a supplementary charge sheet on January 16, 2006. Examining all records and witnesses, the court pronounced the judgement under Section 3 of Explosives Act.
The two convicts along with another accused will be produced before Speedy Trial Tribunal as trial of two more cases in connection with August 17 serial blasts will begin in the same court on July15 and 16, court sources said. Trials of all the cases in connection with the August 17 blasts are likely to be completed by August this year, court sources informed.

A suspect in the failed terror attack on Scotland's busiest airport was unlikely to survive his severe burn injuries, a doctor who treated him said Tuesday.
Khalid Ahmed, 27, is in a Scottish hospital with burns suffered after allegedly crashing a Jeep Cherokee into the Glasgow airport a day after police found two unexploded car bombs in central London.
"The prognosis is not good and he is not likely to survive," a member of the medical team that treated him at the Royal Alexandra Hospital near Glasgow said on condition of anonymity because details about patients' condition are not to be made public.
"He has third-degree burns over most of his torso and limbs. It is beyond repair and because he has lost so much skin he is now vulnerable to infection and won't be able to fight it."

A jury of nine women and three men sitting at Woolwich Crown Court in south London yesterday failed to reach a verdict on the remaining two 21/7 terror suspects Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, 33, and Adel Yahya, 24, who could either face a retrial or be released without further charges.
The trial judge, Justice Fulford gave crown prosecutors until today to decide whether Asiedu and Yahya would face a retrial. He ordered that the two remaining defendants be remanded to custody but accepted that a bail application on behalf of Yahya may be made later.
Asiedu was accused of being the fifth bomber targeting White City station but who subsequently got cold feet and abandoned his bomb in bushes at Little Wormwood Scrubs. He insisted the bombs were real, but that he was duped into carrying them.
Crown prosecutor, Nigel Sweeney QC, claimed Yahya of High Road, Tottenham, north London, was part of the inner circle of bombers and accused him of playing an important behind-the-scenes planning and logistics role. Yahya denied all knowledge of the conspiracy.

Indian police have refused to co-operate with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) investigation into the background of arrested Gold Coast doctor Mohammed Haneef.
An AFP officer arrived in India at the weekend to begin examining Dr Haneef's local connections.
But India's Criminal Investigation Bureau says it will not share information with the Australian officer until he presents an Australian court-issued document relating to the case.
The investigation is now at a halt until the paperwork is processed.
Defence Minister Brendan Nelson, who is on a visit to India, says Australia and India need to improve ties on conducting criminal investigations.
Meanwhile in Australia, Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock says Dr Haneef will be able to resume his life "free of any taint" if he is eventually freed without charge.
The Indian national was detained last week as part of investigations into the failed UK car bomb plots.
Yesterday Australian Federal Police (AFP) sought a third custody extension, but legal argument and procedural matters took up most of the day and the hearing was adjourned until Friday.
Mr Ruddock says the police request for more time to detain Dr Haneef will be considered when the hearing resumes.
"We are a society where people are frequently charged and it's thought that there is sufficient evidence that people have a case to answer, but if they're found not guilty, then the presumption of innocence until proven guilty applies and people are able to resume their lives, free of any taint," he said.
"When you have to deal with authorities abroad .. they're talking to law enforcement authorities in the United Kingdom and as I understand it in India ... that liaison over different time zones is a factor that needs to be taken into account.
"And the reasonableness of any request is to be determined by a judicial officer."
Questions over magistrate
The legal wrangle over Dr Haneef's on-going detention has now reportedly embroiled the Brisbane magistrate hearing his case.
It is understood Dr Haneef's lawyer Peter Russo has asked for the un-named magistrate to disqualify himself on the grounds of possible bias.
Mr Russo would not elaborate, but is remaining optimistic.
"We are making headway," he said. "Part of the application was this legal argument which we have done now."
Police 'desperate'?
Meanwhile a justice expert from the Australian National University says it appears that the AFP are becoming desperate in their attempt to charge Dr Haneef.
Dr Brett Bowden from the Centre for International Governance and Justice says it looks like police are struggling to find a concrete link between Dr Haneef and the attacks in London and Glasgow.
"Whether it's a sign that they actually don't have anything or they're just trying to gather more, to get some concrete links to the failed terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow [I do not know]," he said.
"I fear that nine days without charge may mean that they don't actually have anything.
"Nine days seems an awful long time to be honest.
"As I understand it, the police have gone back to his apartment to gather more forensic evidence.
"Whether that means they didn't do a thorough enough job the first time around, or that they're getting desperate, you'd hope that if they'd found something to charge him with they would've done it by now."

A top-secret operation in early 2005 meant to "snatch and grab" top Al Qaeda members in Pakistan was aborted at the last second when former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld decided the raid was too risky, according to The New York Times.
Intelligence officials were targeting a meeting that they thought included Al Qaeda No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri, the man believed to run much of the terrorist groups operations, a former senior intelligence official involved in the mission told the Times.
But Rumsfeld called off the operation after deciding it had become too risky in terms of American lives and relations with Pakistan. Rumsfeld was apparently concerned with Pakistan's ban on the U.S. military operating in its tribal areas and the rift the mission could cause.
The raid had started off as a small number of military and CIA personnel but before launch ended up including several hundred people, according to the report. Then director of the CIA, Porter Goss, appealed to Rumsfeld to carry out the operation, but was rejected, the Times reported

The government on Tuesday took Maulana Fazlur Rehman Khalil, chief of the banned Harkatul Mujahideen, into protective custody after the death of Abdur Rashid Ghazi, sources told Daily Times. Fazlur Rehman Khalil has been taken into protective custody at his residence-cum-madrassa in Islamabad in view of the security situation, said the sources.
Khalil was a close aide of Ghazi and had played a vital role in talks between the government and the Lal Masjid administration on Monday night. Fazalur Rehman Khalil, a militant leader who figures in India's list of 'most wanted' terrorists, was roped in by Pakistani authorities to persuade radical cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi of Lal Masjid to give in before security forces launched a crackdown on the mosque.
Along with Jaish-e-Muhammad chief Maulana Masood Azhar and Lashker-e-Taiba founder, Hafeez Mohammed Sayed, Khalil is in the list of 'most wanted' terrorists that India has handed over to Pakistan.
Khalil was patronised by the Pakistani establishment when he was involved in militant activities in Jammu and Kashmir, but became a hot potato after 9/11. He was also one of the five signatories of Osama bin Laden's fatwa in 1998 asking Muslims across the world to kill American citizens.
He was arrested in May 2004 by the Pakistan government after he continued to defy the government and send militants into Afghanistan to fight along with the Taliban. He was released subsequently for "lack of evidence".

Unidentified assailants gunned down an activist of the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) late on Monday night in the jurisdiction of Shah Qabool police station, police said. Police officer Latif told Daily Times that Hayat Khan was shot dead at around 2am outside his Nishtarabad house. He said police had registered a case on the widows complaint. According to police, the deceased had no previous enmity.
The federal government has declared a red alert in the country, particularly in the NWFP, for fear of a backlash following the operation against Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa, sources in the Interior Ministry told Daily Times on Tuesday.
The sources said that a crackdown on the Tehreek Nifaz-e-Shariah Muhammadi (TNSM) was on the cards since the banned organisation was involved in terrorist activities in Swat Valley, particularly attacks on military convoys.
The sources said that militants and students of various madrassas took to the streets in several parts of the NWFP and the tribal areas on Tuesday to protest against the Lal Masjid operation. The protesters stormed the offices of the political agents of Khyber and Mohmand (Upper) agencies and reportedly manhandled the political agents and tried to take them away. The Interior Ministry has directed the NWFP police to tighten security for senior government officials and religious personalities.
The sources said that the Interior Ministry had directed all provincial home departments to conduct siege and search operations against suspected militants who may carry out suicide attacks in retaliation to the Lal Masjid operation. The NWFP police has beefed up security around mosques, madrassas, imambargahs and foreign missions and police patrolling has been increased on all major highways.
Meanwhile, the sources said that some workers of international humanitarian organisations carrying out relief activities in Swat, Batagram and Balakot had been either beaten up or kidnapped by madrassa students. They said that TNSM activists backed by Maulana Fazlullah may be involved in the attack.
In Batagram, hundreds of gun-wielding madrassa students and locals blocked the Karakoram Highway and fired in the air to protest against the Lal Masjid operation.

Abdul Rashid Ghazi, deputy chief cleric of Lal Masjid, was among dozens killed as Pakistan Army commandos stormed the mosque compound after a weeklong standoff with militant students. More than 50 militants and nine soldiers were killed in the 15-hour offensive, which kicked off shortly before dawn on Tuesday, said Major General Arshad Waheed, director general of ISPR, at a late night press briefing. He said 29 soldiers and many others were injured, but could not give exact figures. He did not say how many women and children were killed. Independent sources said the total death toll was likely to be much higher. Social worker Abdus Sattar Edhi told reporters that his charity had supplied 500 shrouds to the security forces.
Shortly after night fell the gunfire died down, but Ghazis residence had still to be swept of possible resistance, and two explosions - possibly stun grenades - were heard after midnight, Reuters reported.
Gen Arshad told AFP that troops had secured 80 percent of the complex. He said the operation was taking so long because the militants were using women and children as human shields, they were well trained and heavily armed, and because of the complex layout of the 75-room compound, which had been extensively booby-trapped. The operation is in its last stages. There are one or two areas to be cleared, he said.
Security forces have besieged Lal Masjid in Operation Silence since July 3. The assault was approved after last ditch talks between a delegation of ministers and clerics led by PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain failed to negotiate a surrender with Ghazi.
Security forces began the offensive at around 4:30am in a hail of bullets, teargas shells and stun grenades. Blasts from inside the compound could be heard throughout the day. The Interior Ministry said Ghazi had holed up in a basement bunker along with 10 diehard supporters when Special Services Group commandos ambushed the place. Ghazi and his men died in the assault. Ghazis ailing mother was also killed.
According to initial reports, Ghazi was killed in an explosion but later reports suggested that he died of multiple bullet wounds. The ministry claimed he was given the option to surrender but his men did not let him do so. Surviving militants fought on after Ghazi was killed at the climax of the siege.
The security forces rescued Umme Hassan, the principal of Jamia Hafsa and wife of its chief cleric Abdul Aziz Ghazi, and her daughter along with some 25 female students. It was not clear how many more women and children were inside. The women were shifted to the Pakistan Sports Complex for debriefing. The forces also arrested more than 90 students, including hardcore militants.
President General Pervez Musharraf had reportedly directed the forces to capture Ghazi and his men alive so that they could be interrogated for their terror links and operations. He later praised the SSG commandoes for the successful operation.
The government decided not to lift the curfew in G-6 until the completion of the operation and after combing the area for explosives. Police sealed off the capital early on Tuesday morning and nobody was allowed to enter the city until 10am.

That's the problem, Ebbang Uluque6305 . Just as with China's execution of Food Minister Zheng, Ghazi's abrupt departure is merely window dressing designed solely to appease the West. The rot in Pakistan goes so deep that only a dedicated campaign of leveling all the madrassahs would have the least effect. Musharraf simply does not have the courage for this and neither would Pakistan's population countenance such an act.
All of this leads me to suspect that Pakistan has some extremely "interesting times" in its future.
Iraqi security forces seized 200 explosive belts Wednesday along the Syrian border, Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said. The belts were found during a search of a truck that had crossed into Iraq from Syria at the Waleed border station. Khalaf said the driver was detained but he would not give his name or nationality.
U.S. military spokesman Brig. Gen. Kevin Bergner told reporters that 60 to 80 foreign fighters enter Iraq "in any given month" 70 percent of them through Syria. He said up to 90 percent of the suicide attacks in Iraq were carried out by "foreign-born al-Qaida terrorists." He cited the July 1 suicide attack that collapsed part of a major bridge across the Euphrates River north of Ramadi. A second bomber was supposed to have attacked the bridge but backed out and was captured, Bergner said.
The surviving attacker told interrogators he had been recruited by al-Qaida in his home country, flown to Syria and smuggled across the border to Ramadi, where he stayed for about 10 days before the attack. Bergner would not give the would-be attacker's nationality, but other military officials said he was a Saudi. They spoke on condition of anonymity.
A number of private security analysts have questioned the U.S. military's emphasis on al-Qaida in Iraq, but Bergner insisted that al-Qaida in Iraq and its allies were the main focus because they were the "main accelerant in sectarian violence and the greatest source of these spectacular" suicide attacks "that are killing Iraqis in such large numbers."
U.S. officials say that violence in Anbar province, long the focal point of the Sunni insurgency, dropped by 50 percent after local Sunni tribes joined U.S. and Iraqi forces in fighting al-Qaida last year. That has led to a series of reprisal attacks by al-Qaida against Sunnis in Anbar and elsewhere who have abandoned the insurgency. On Wednesday, insurgents drove to a house in the Anbar town of Karmah, locked the occupants inside, and blew up the house, Iraqi police and U.S. military officials said. Eleven people were killed. The house was owned by a member of the Provincial Security Forces organized to protect towns and villages against extremists, the U.S. military said. Iraqis betting their lives, their fortunes, and their entire families -- never mind their sacred honour -- that we will stand with them.

Well, if you're going to screw up, you might as well go for the record, I say.
As far as the belts are concerned, can't they just be returned to the senders? Maybe the truck with the belts can be delivered from 20,000 feet to the Presidential Palace in Damascus, just to let them know we care. Anything else would be a waste of good explosives.
AL-QAEDA in Iraq killed or wounded more than 4000 Iraqis in suicide attacks in the past six months, US military spokesman Brigadier General Kevin Bergner said today.
Bergner said most of these attacks were carried out by foreign-born terrorists and that while their numbers are relatively small ... their effects are very, very devastating on the people of Iraq.
He said that around 60 to 80 foreigners are brought to Iraq every month by al-Qaeda in Iraq, a local militant group that sprang up in the wake of the US-led invasion of March 2003 and professes allegiance to the global Jihadi front.
They are the principal threat in a complex security environment. al-Qaeda is the principal destability factor targeting the Government of Iraq, Brig-Gen Bergner said, in a weekly briefing largely dedicated to the al-Qaeda threat.
He said US-led coalition forces continued to target the group's strongholds across Iraq and that they had killed or captured 26 high-level leaders during May and June.

The focus on al Qaeda makes sense here, where local officials have gone on record acknowledging that most of the perhaps one thousand al Qaeda fighters in Baqubah were young men and boys who called the city home. This may clash with the perception in US and other media that only a small percentage of the enemy in Iraq is al Qaeda, which in turn leads to false conclusions that the massive offensive campaign underway across Iraq is a lot of shock and awe aimed at a straw enemy. But as more Sunni tribal leaders renounce former ties with al Qaeda, its becoming clearer just how heavily AQ relied on local talent, and how disruptive they have been here in fomenting the civil war.
Al Qaedas recruiting efforts in Baqubah were not much different than what they used in Mosul as 2004 changed into 2005 and Iraqs first elections loomed. (I was in Baqubah at that time.) I wrote about how thugs and gangs and fugitive fundamentalists on the run from Fallujah flooded into Mosul and murdered people by the hundreds. Al Qaeda had excellent publicity and media teams and a sales pitch that worked effectively for a long time. But the reason for Zawahiris recent desperate recruiting drive is the fact that AQ values in action have turned local people against them. We are not always fighting AQ on the battlefield because they can be so difficult to find, but month by month, year by year, we can destroy them on the moral battlefield; they are savages and most people can see it.
Over here, the fact of al Qaeda murdering children is just that: its a fact. How they chose to commit the murders is a variable that changes from incident to incident. Ive written often about how Iraqis, as a rule, love and greatly value their children. This makes the children especially vulnerable as targets for terrorists. That is a brutal fact.
Al Qaeda drinks and uses drugs here. This is not propaganda. This is not even news, its a fact that I wrote about back in 2005. Zarqawi, the now-dead former leader of AQI, was best known for causing the deaths of thousands or tens of thousands of Iraqis, and raping women all over the land and over in Jordan. Whether Zarqawi raped women from village to village, or one woman from each village, I do not know. But Zarqawi cultivated his image like a pro. Rape and murder were his trademarks.

I guess we are going to have a semantic problem with ex-insurgents who are now on the Coalition side (as opposed to ex-insurgents who are dead or ex-insurgents who have opted out of the fighting altogether).
The BBC and al-guardian will probably refer to them as "'former' insurgents" or something similar.
I'd be inclined to go with acronyms.
FICAs = former insurgents now coorporating with the Allied coalition.

Importantly, they are losing places where they can run to, and not immediately come under attack from the locals. This really matters, because they are desperate to find some place to go to set up shop, regroup and rearm, and get their stuff together. If they have to stay on the road, they lose.
Just today they tried to force their way into a village, which looks very much like desperation.

I would be very interested in our actual estimation of how many AIF are left in country, and their breakdown. My guesses are al-Q, probably less than 1000; criminal gangs, 2000; Iranian backed groups, about 2000; Sunni and Shiite militias, maybe 3000; various & sundry others, 1000.
This is a liberal estimate, and includes those who might fight, but aren't, and those that stay in their 'hood.

The militants had fled north from a U.S. offensive in the city of Baqouba, where American forces are fighting to uproot al-Qaida in Iraq fighters and other Sunni insurgents who used the area to attack nearby Baghdad, Lt. Col. Fred Johnson told The Associated Press in Baqouba.
The fighters attacked the village of Sherween, 35 miles to the northeast, on Monday, sparking a fierce battle with armed residents trying to defend their homes, according to the deputy governor of Diyala province, Auf Rahim, who received a call from residents Tuesday pleading for help from the Iraqi army. Rahim said he was told by the residents that the fighters had taken over the village in fighting that killed dozens from both sides.
A U.S. and Iraqi army force moved into the village Tuesday night and drove out the insurgents in a battle that left at least 19 extremists dead, Johnson said. He did not comment on any casualties among the coalition forces. Rest at link.

Practically speaking, this is very good news, as it means that there are fewer and fewer places for the bad guyz to go, so that they now have to try and force their way into towns. Any opposition at all from the locals screws them over royally.
It is like what happened to the brigands when the seven samurai showed up. They brigands have to take the village, or starve.

Have to agree with wxjames on this. While it's all good news as far as it goes, unless there are extenuating facts unknown to us, we should be getting almost ALL of these guys, not "driving them out". Of course, LTC Kilcullen will chime in about how it's not important that the enemy is fleeing, since all we're trying to do is change Iraqi society, one town/hood at a time, in a few weeks (OK, a bit unfair, but the point is made), once the enemy has fled.
Perhaps we don't have the resources. But if I were in a position to do so, I'd be asking the corps commander why we didn't surround the town, then capture/kill nearly 100% of the enemy. I just wonder if anyone in the military even thinks this way - in terms of actually using our power to achieve decisive results. Yes, Virginia, there ARE decisive results in counter-insurgency situations. 100% of dead enemy no longer fight us, and 100% of Iraqis are more impressed by people being killed than being chased.
100% dead is nice to think about but I don't think we have the force available to surround a village that size that fast.
Killing 20 and capturing 20 out of a force that probably didn't exceed 100, is probably better than the usual result during this op (and far better than last year's ops).

There's no way I'd go up against what Verlaine says...and he makes good points. Some bad guys did get away...and almost assuredly they were tipped off. It's the ME way of doing things. But...the folks who tipped em off weren't the ones residing in the next town ready to take up arms. We're squeezing the AQ outta their strongholds. Sooner (rather than later hopefully) more n more will start running into a not-so-welcome committee like we seen today. We don't have all the resources, and eventually it's gonna be an Iraqi show.

She depends on her other two younger brothers, aged 14 and 16, to work and bring food to the family. One works as a cleaner and the other sells things in the streets. My mother was killed leaving my infant brother without milk. I really dont know what to do as he wont take powdered milk and we cannot move around our neighbourhood to look for a woman who could breast-feed him.
I stay awake all night crying because I lost my mother for such an idiotic thing.
One day she went out to buy some stuff for him and she left him with me at home. She went out as she always used to and extremists just shot her dead in the middle of the street. According to witnesses, they were shouting that this would be the fate of all women that dont wear a veil.
It was a shock to my whole family. No one expected that this lovely woman would one day die for such a foolish thing, that she would lose such a beautiful life because of a piece of cloth.
Since my mother was killed on 18 June, my father left his job as a cook in a restaurant. He just stays at home crying for my mother and drinking alcohol, things he never did before.
The extremists have destroyed our life. My brothers and I had to stop studying, my father quit work and Abdul-Aziz is suffering from malnutrition because he wont take powdered milk.
I hope I can find a woman who can breast feed my brother and keep him alive. I would give him to someone to stop him dying.

Three people, including a US military service member, were killed and 18 others were injured on Tuesday in a rocket and mortar attack on the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, the State Department said. The US embassy in the Iraqi capital is currently aware of three fatalities, a US military service member, an Iraqi citizen and a third of unknown nationality, a department statement said. We are also aware of approximately 18 injured people, among them five US citizens, two of them service members, and three US contract employees, it said.The statement said without giving details that multiple rounds of indirect fire were launched at the international zone on Tuesday afternoon. Iraqi police said that around 30 mortars and rockets were fired at the compound, which houses the Iraqi government and US embassy.

I imagine we know where the mortar/rocket fire originated - there must be maximum counter-battery radar coverage of all potential launch sites in range of the IZ. The problem is the bad guys set up the launchers in places we can't hit back at - (occupied) schoolyards, mosques, hospitals, etc. But there's a good chance they were on camera as they loaded up their trucks and headed back to their lairs - look for reports of some nighttime visits and roll-ups in a few days. I've heard there were around 30 launches - that made for lots of chances to zero in on them.

Terrorists Insurgents shot dead a villager in Narathiwat early Wednesday, just hours before Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont arrived in the province for a two-day visit. A roadside bomb killed five people, including Tamil Tiger insurgents, in an apparent ambush in rebel-held territory in Sri Lankas far north on Tuesday, Nordic truce monitors said.
The attack in Mankulam, along the islands main north-south artery that spans government and rebel territory, is the latest in a spree of roadside bombs attacks in recent months, the vast majority of them against government troops. The unarmed Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission initially reported eight Tigers were killed. We are hearing contradictory reports, but it seems now that five were killed, a spokesman for the monitors said. It was a Claymore attack.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam said a medical services team comprising rebel fighters and civilian medical personnel was targeted by Sri Lankan troops and that four people were killed and two injured. Military analysts say deep penetration units of soldiers are operating behind Tiger lines using guerrilla tactics to fight the insurgents on their own terms, and suggest a new chapter in a two-decade civil war will escalate further.
It was an attack by a deep penetration unit of the Sri Lankan army, rebel military spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiraiyan said by telephone from the northern rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi. It was a medical unit going to attend to medical services in a village. Four were killed on the spot. This is not the first, he added. There is a cordon and search operation going on throughout the area to stop the perpetrators. The Sri Lankan military was not immediately available for comment.
Tigers slow military advance: Tamil Tiger rebels in the east of Sri Lanka are showing stiff resistance and have slowed a military advance on a strategic jungle base, defence authorities here said Tuesday. Government spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella told reporters that the Tiger rebels were still holed up in a small area known as Thoppigala, adding that they had buried mines and were slowing the military campaign. We have captured about 98 percent of the territory, but the balance two percent wont be in a matter of days, Rambukwella said, dismissing media reports that troops were about to take Thoppigala. It may even take two years, he said. He said the objective of the security forces was not limited to capturing Thoppigala, but was to take full control over the multi-ethnic eastern province by neutralising the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

An explosion in southeast Iran killed 13 people when trucks smuggling gasoline crashed on Tuesday, a police official was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying. Police General Salah Asgarpour said the accident occurred when a truck carrying smuggled gasoline lost control and ploughed into three other trucks also carrying smuggled material, including gasoline and fabrics. There was a fireball in the place of the accident in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, Asgarpour said. Three people were injured, he added.

But seriously, I wonder if it actually would be possible to develop a device that would interfere with a truck engine; some kind of directed EM beam that would cause mis-fires or something. Pick an appropriately bad section of Iranian road, wait for a likely target, and distract the driver with a balky engine - and thus balky air brakes. Bingo, crash and fireball. Or maybe even some airborne high-beams (night) or shiney mirrors (day) in his eyes as he approaches that mountain curve with no guard rail? Blame it on UFOs.

Previous Rantburg story stated these gasoline smugglers drive by night with no headlights on. The crash was probably due to a lack of directed EM beams, which works as well. Plausible deniability, you know.

AL-QAEDA has urged Pakistanis to revolt against President Pervez Musharraf following the storming of the Red Mosque in Islamabad, in an audiotape posted on the Internet.
"I call upon the Ulama (Muslim clergy) in Pakistan.... Musharraf and his hunting dogs have tarnished your honour in service of the crusades and the Jews,'' the group's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, said in the recording, after stating that he was speaking on the "occasion of the criminal aggression'' on the mosque.
The recording was hosted on a website known to publish Al-Qaeda statements.
"If you do not revolt, Musharraf will annihilate you. Musharraf will not stop until he uproots Islam from Pakistan,'' Zawahiri said.
"Muslims in Pakistan: no salvation for you except through Jihad (holy fight). Rigged elections and politics will not help you.... You should now support the mujahedin (holy warriors) in Afghanistan,'' he said.
"Are there no honourable men in Pakistan?'' he added.
Pakistani troops Wednesday cleared the last militants from the Red Mosque in Islamabad after two days of intense fighting that left at least 82 people dead, including 73 militants, and turned the capital into a battleground.
Commandos killed the final hardcore of rebels who fought to the death in tunnels and bunkers beneath the living quarters of their chief, pro-Taliban cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi, who was shot dead late Tuesday.
Musharraf ordered the assault after talks with Ghazi to free the women and children allegedly held during the siege collapsed.
The siege itself left 24 people dead, including two soldiers.
The storming of the mosque came months after Ghazi and his burqa-clad female students from the girls' madrassa launched a campaign involving kidnappings to bring Taliban-style Islamic laws to Islamabad.
Street battles broke out on July 3 between police and the mosque's radical students about a week after they abducted seven Chinese people accused of involvement in prostitution.
Ghazi, 43, the public face of the mosque and its deputy leader, said before he was killed in the fighting that he and his followers would rather die than surrender and hoped his death would spark an Islamic revolution in Pakistan.
His brother, head cleric Abdul Aziz, was caught trying to flee the mosque in a burqa a week ago.
Zawahiri described in the same tape the parading of Abdul Aziz Ghazi on television dressed as a women as a "vile crime committed by Pakistani military intelligence''.

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Al-Qaida's deputy leader issued a video Wednesday calling for Pakistanis to wage a holy war against their government in retaliation for the attack by Pakistan's army on the Red Mosque in Islamabad.
Ayman al-Zawahri's 4-minute, 24-second address focused entirely on the clashes between Islamic students and Pakistan's army at the mosque.
The video was released by al-Qaida's multimedia branch, as-Sahab. Its authenticity could not immediately be confirmed, but two U.S.-based terrorism monitoring groups also reported it. So whaddya think Perv? Time to give him up?

It was the second message by al-Zawahri this week, and his 10th this year, said Ben Venzke of the IntelCenter, a U.S.-based intelligence group that monitors terrorism messages.
Venzke said al-Qaida's media wing, as-Sahab, was now releasing more than two messages a week on average. "They just keep getting faster," he said on the telephone.
"Al-Qaida has apparently made the decision that it's important for them to respond to current events within a short news cycle," he said. Venzke pointed out that al-Zawahri was reacting to events at the Red Mosque in Pakistan that were barely a week old.
As-Sahab issued a total of 58 messages for all of 2006. But Wednesday's release was its 62nd so far for 2007, IntelCenter said.

If everyone is upset at Chertoff for "continuing to scare the bejeebers out of us" with his "gut feelings". Then what to make of the guy in the other corner. I think he is on the payroll of the NYTs/WaPo/LAT/CBS/NPR/NBC/ABC conglomerate. They provide the equipment and he makes the press swoon with delight that everytime he makes a tape, Chertoff and Bush and Cheney wind up the nation and the press can then accuse them of "scaring us and creating the situation in Iraq that is stirring up AQ". Everyone forgets this war actually started a long time ago, like so 1970'sish.
