New security shambles as three terror suspects go on the run
Three terror suspects, including two brothers of an Islamic fanatic jailed for plotting mass murder, are on the run tonight. They had all been under control orders requiring them to report to the authorities every day.

Two of the men are Lamine Adam, 26, and Ibrahim Adam, 20, whose brother Anthony Garcia, 24, was jailed for life last month for his part in the fertiliser bomb plot. The third man is their associate Cerie Bullivant, 24.

Home Secretary John Reid, who faced fresh accusations that the Government's terror policy is a shambles, took the unprecedented step of naming the three after consultations with Scotland Yard. The fact that they were named - Ministers have resisted all attempts to identify three other control order suspects on the run - was seen as evidence of the urgent need to find them.

Opposition MPs said it was clear control orders could not protect the public.

Control orders were introduced as a compromise after the courts ruled that terror suspects could not be detained without trial. But successive home secretaries have suffered a series of human rights defeats which mean suspects can no longer be placed under virtual house arrest. Six in total have now gone on the run.

The Adam brothers, originally from Algeria, had been due to contact a monitoring company on Monday, but failed to do so. Bullivant failed to report to his local police station the following day.

Deputy assistant commissioner Peter Clarke, head of Terrorism Command for the Metropolitan Police, said: "They have breached the conditions of their control orders, which is a serious crime. We know that Lamine Adam, Ibrahim Adam and Cerie Bullivant are associates and may well be together. It is possible the public can help us trace them."

Mr Reid will make an emergency statement to Parliament tomorrow.

Security sources stressed that the men were under control orders because they were suspected of plotting atrocities overseas and said they were not an immediate danger to the public here. But their links to Garcia, who changed his name when he became a model, are certain to cause alarm. He was one of five men jailed for life last month for a bomb plot linked to Al Qaeda that could have killed hundreds of people.

#4  Nobody deserves a 9/11, Howard. But a car bomb or some grisly murders wouldn't surprise me. And yes, Security would be wise to forbid burqas and face veils in public until the War on Terror has been decisively won (although of course we're no longer using that term -- 'cause if we don't name it, it isn't happening).

#11  I see the "control orders" in Britain work as well as our technique here in US when dealing with illegals. They appear in court and are told to come back in 60 days to determine if they will recieve deportation orders. Of course, they all willfully return to court. None do. And yet, we can't seem to change this little technique of enforcment. Even a child of five playing a game, wouldn't release someone after they were caught.

Terrorist plot against Baku-Ceyhan main pipeline prevented
After the explosion in Ankara, Turkish law-enforcement bodies arrested a women kamikaze in Adana during intensified operations in the country, APA’s Turkey bureau reports. 11 kg 300 grams of A-4 explosive material, two hand grenades and some equipment for committing explosion was found in the woman’s bag who said “You poisoned Ojalan, therefore I wanted to kill you.”

But investigation suspects that her target was the Baku-Tbilis-Ceyhan main oil pipeline or Botash Energy Company. The terrorist was detained while going to Ceyhan in a taxi.

“She got into car with her bags. She told me to drive to Ceyhan. But she did not said where we had to go in Ceyhan,” taxi driver told the police.

Police source says there can only be two targets for terrorists in Ceyhan– Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and Botash company. “The police achieved to prevent a huge terrorist acts by detaining the living bomb,” the source said.

Person named Adem Barik who sent this woman from Urfa region of Turkey to Adana, and provided her with explosive materials and equipment for committing terrorist act was also detained and taken to Adana. A-4 explosive material found in the bag of the woman terrorist-kamikaze was also used in the terrorist act committed in Ankara on Tuesday.

I believe this may be just the turkish spelling of Abdullah Öcalan. Urfa is a city, with apparently a solid kurdish population; so, I'd say she's probably kurd.

Suicide bomber kills 20 northeast of Baghdad
BAGHDAD - A bomber wearing a suicide vest killed 20 people and wounded 30 in a cafe in a volatile province northeast of Baghdad on Wednesday, police said. The attack took place in Mandali in Diyala province, a mainly Shia Kurd town about 100 km (60 miles) northeast of Baghdad near the Iranian border.

Local mayor Abdul Hussein Al Qaralusy put the death toll at 11, with 24 wounded. Qaralusy said the bomber was wearing a suicide vest when he walked into the centre of the cafe and blew himself up.

Israel seizes Hamas leaders in West Bank
GAZA - Israeli forces seized a Palestinian cabinet minister, lawmakers and mayors in the occupied West Bank and launched more air strikes in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, stepping up a campaign against Hamas Islamists. Israeli troops entered the West Bank city of Nablus and took into custody Education Minister Naser Al Shaer of Hamas, according to his wife, Huda. ‘I asked them, ‘Why are you taking him’. The officer said, ‘We have orders’,’ Huda told Reuters.
Excellent! Jug him and hold him til Hamas lets go the Israeli soldier they're holding. And if it doesn't work, pinch other Hamas big.
Israeli forces also seized at least three Hamas lawmakers, the mayor and deputy mayor of Nablus and other local Hamas officials, Hamas officials said. An Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed that an ‘arrest operation’ had been conducted but added: ‘At this point, I cannot elaborate on who was arrested’.

It was not immediately clear whether other senior ministers in the Palestinian unity government were targeted.

IAF bombs money-changing offices that funded Hamas
The IAF bombed a money-changing office in Gaza late Wednesday night, as well as other businesses in the Gaza Strip responsible for transferring money to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. According to the IDF, the money-changers have transferred millions of dollars from Syria and Iran to the two groups in recent years. The money was used to finance anti-Israel terror activity, including the manufacture of Kassam rockets - 200 of which were fired over the past week-and-a-half.

Also Tuesday, IAF strikes on Hamas training camps in Gaza wounded at least six people, Palestinian security officials said. Hamas officials said that one of the air strikes destroyed a building used by its private militia, known as the Executive Force. The army confirmed the strikes and said the building served as a command and control center for Hamas terrorist activity

Just so you'll have absolutely no doubt, NOTE THIS WELL: your plagiarized religion, your thieving, raping, pedophile prophet Mahound (spit), and the countries the majority of your coreligionists live in are all held in complete contempt by intelligent people everywhere. Most of them also think that the sooner welfare-sucking, oxygen-thieving idiots of your muzzy ilk are removed from the gene pool, the better off the remainder of humanity will be.

You have no respect because you deserve no respect; you create nothing, construct nothing, and have no characteristics even slightly worthy of emulation. The only time you idiots can even vaguely grasp the concept of cooperation is when you are ganging up trying to harm some other group, after which, if you are successful, you will immediately start shooting each other over the spoils. More often though, you fail and spend your time shooting each other over who was at fault. Then you go back to raping your sisters. Seeing your town in Paleostan swamped by a tsunami of sewage was poetic justice; that's how everyone who has to live near you muzzy trash feels about your arrival.

Israel hits Gaza targets
GAZA - Israel launched air strikes and a ground operation on Wednesday against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. Israel’s bombing campaign against Hamas entered a second week with air strikes on Wednesday that destroyed two buildings that the army said were being used to manufacture and store munitions. Palestinians denied the buildings held weapons.

Local hospital officials said at least seven Palestinians and six fluffy bunnies were wounded overnight.

In a rare move, Israeli ground forces entered a small village in southern Gaza. During the brief raid, the troops held seven Palestinians for questioning, local residents and Israeli military sources said. One of the Palestinians, 17-year-old Samer Qdaih, said the Israeli troops threatened to return to flatten the neighbourhood if rocket fire against Israeli towns continued.
And then threaten to annex the land to Israel permanently. That'll get their attention.
At least two rockets fell on southern Israel on Wednesday, compared to 10 on Tuesday. Hamas did not claim responsibility for any of Wednesday’s firings. A woman was killed on Monday in the Israeli town of Sderot, the first fatality in a Palestinian rocket attack since November. At least 190 rockets have landed in Israel in the last eight days, the army said.

More on Dragon Skin controversy
Since there was some discussion among Rantburgers that the testing might have been unralistic and/or stacked, I am linking to this post by a very experienced Special Forces officer. Some quotes:
"...of eight Pinnacle SOV 3000 Level IV Dragon Skin (DS) vests tested for V0 penetration, four of them failed . . .Of these, significant first shot failures were noted when the DS vests were exposed to diesel fuel, a serious concern since almost all of our vehicles use this fuel . . .between spillage during refueling and the potential for saturation after an IED attack vests can easily be contaminated with fuels.
"A first shot complete penetration was also observed after a DS vest was drop tested. [A] 48 pound vest is going to get dropped, dragged, and abused a LOT in a combat zone.
"Finally, and most significantly, the vest cannot be exposed to heat. With solar loads regularly generating vehicle interior temperatures well in excess of 150 degrees, the DS vest disks delaminate themselves and fall to the bottom of the vest, effectively reducing the armor protection to nearly nothing. All panels shot after high temperature exposure failed in the first shot.

#1  That last one I had not heard - thats is a huge issue: you cannot protect the body if the plates have fallen out of their mounting matrix. The whole concept is each platelet overlaps and supports the other. Drop one out and you lose effectiveness. Drop a bunch and you don't have plates anymore. Its the equivalent of removing the plate on which the Army's armor depends.

May as well be wearing a potato sack if that's true.

Sounds like the DS guys need to use a better adhesive and mounting matrix (fixes hi temperature and drops) and some sealants (fixes diesel), and they'll be fixed up. I expect you'll see this fixed soon.

Outside of those conditions (150+ degrees, soaked in diesel and dropped from a 10 foot wall), it did outperform al the other stuff they tested.

And it is NIJ Level III certified.

Still, outside of those specific extreme military conditions (i.e. for normal police and protective work), I'd choose DS over anything else I've worn for Level III. I never had plates fall loose or any of that crap. And you can move in it.

Remember: the best body armor is the stuff that actually gets worn. Make perfect intercptor plate and if it doesn't let you move and weighs a lot, then its going to be left in the track.
Posted by: OldSpook || 05/24/2007 18:49 Comments || Top||

#2  So basically, this is good armor IF : 1) you are doing positional defense of say a road block; 2) you are in a temperate climate; or 3) you are a civilian SWAT team member in a temperate climate. Because, almost every military vehicle is diesel and a vest will get splashed with diesel; the ambient air temperature in Iraq in the summer can exceed 135 degrees, not counting solar heat buildup in vehicles; and soldiers will find a way to break things because combat is a bitch and tough on everything.
I wouldn't trust that vest in Phoenix or Las Vegas either, OS : lots of police vests get stuck in car trunks until they are needed, and the internal temp in a trunk in either city would exceed the vest's safe margins.
So realistically, it is a vest for police/civilians in a temperate climate, assuming it is worn on the person at all times, and not exposed to diesel.
Posted by: Shieldwolf || 05/24/2007 19:29 Comments || Top||

#3  Funny thing is, I've worn DS in the heat (up over 100 in Alabama), and never felt it drop plates like they claim it did. And the temps there get pretty hot in the trunk too. I was also an Armored Cav trooper, and I don't recall spending my time soaked in diesel, at least not outside the motorpool when I was in maint coveralls. Sweat is a different story (dismounting and springing with a TOW round isn't exactly a walk in the park).

If it were that bad, then how'd they get it to pass NIJ testing? Thats what makes me question whether the Army tests were run, especially given the disparaging remarks made about DS before the tests were even run by one of the officers in charge of testing.

Not going the conspiracy route, but it does call into question the fundamental objectivity of the officer involved and his possible biases.

There should be some sort of impartial lab that tests these kinds of things. Wait, there is one. The NIJ (for police). I wonder why they can't make an ANSI or A/N Milspec standard for these things?

As far as practical use- the static defense argument is one I use against the Army's plate- the stuff is heavy and inflexible.

And the bottom line still stands: the only good BA is the stuff that gets worn. It isnt going to do you any good if its so stiff and heavy that it gets left in the track.

As it stands, none of the std gear is all that great, and now apparently DS doenst do well in some specific mil conditions. I say: tell the Army to license the patents off the DS guys and develop their own version of it for military use.

Best of both worlds.

Southeast Asia
Four Muslims, one Buddhist killed in Thai south
Four Muslims and a Buddhist were killed and six troops wounded in four separate attacks in Thailand's rebellious Muslim-majority far south, police said on Wednesday.

At least 10 masked gunmen fired into a Muslim village late on Tuesday, killing three men and a woman, police said in Yala, one of the three southern provinces caught up in three years of separatist insurgency in which more than 2,100 people have died. "They used all sorts of guns, shooting ramdomly" and the four people were killed in different houses, a police investigator told Reuters by telephone. The identity of the gunmen was unknown, but police presumed they were separatists, although Muslims accuse government supporters of killings.

On Wednesday, a Buddhist government official was shot dead by a gunman riding pillion on a motorcycle while he was heading to work in the city of Yala on his own motorcycle, they said. Shortly after, a 20 kg (44-lb) bomb in a fire extinguisher exploded on a road in nearby Yaha district as a truck carrying 10 soldiers drove past, wounding three slightly, police said. In the nearby district of Than To, militants ambushed another patrol truck of soldiers with guns and a roadside bomb, wounding three, they said.

And:

Insurgents exploded a bomb at a police office in southern Thailand's province of Yala early Thursday, prompting a nearby school to close for the day, according to local newspaper Bangkok Post's website. There was no report of casualties from the attack and damage was being assessed.

Leb army kills 13 gunnies fleeing to Ein-el-Hellhole by boat
13 Fatah al-Islam militants were shot and killed by the Lebanese army as they tried to flee Nahr al-Bared by boat to the southern refugee camp of Ein el-Hilweh.
Also, there are already opportunities for rapid advancement at Al-Qaeda in the Land of the Cedar Trees:
Fatah al-Islam's No. 2 man and son-in-law of the extremist group's leader Shaker Absi has been reportedly wounded during clashes with Lebanese troops in the northern refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared. As Ya Libnan has reported earlier, according to eyewitnesses that fled the camp , they saw Fatah al-Islam leader Shaker al-Absi seriously wounded in his hand and his shoulder as a result of Lebanese army shelling of the group’s headquarters in Nahr al-Bared camp.
The daily An Nahar did not identify Absi's relative, but said his foot was blown off in the fighting.
Other reports say 'twas his son-in-law
An Nahar also said other Fatah al-Islam fighters were arrested and handed over to the intelligence bureau. An Nahar also said Lebanese troops dragged the bodies of 40 Fatah al-Islam fighters, many of them from different African nationalities.
African gunnies, you say?

Lebanon's defense minister gives Fatah Islam ultimatum
Lebanon's defense minister issued an ultimatum Wednesday to Islamic militants barricaded in this Palestinian refugee camp to surrender or face a military onslaught, as the army reinforced its positions, raising fears of what could be a bloody showdown.
Mmmmmmmm. I sure hope they have napalm
Fighters from the al-Qaida-inspired Fatah Islam militant group vowed not to give up and to fight any Lebanese assault.

Storming the Nahr el-Bared camp - a densely built-up town of narrow streets on the Mediterranean coast - could mean rough urban fighting for Lebanese troops and further death and destruction for the the thousands of terrorists and terrorist-sympathizers, as well as a few civilians who remain inside. It could also have grave repercussions elsewhere across troubled Lebanon, sparking unrest among the country's estimated 400,000 Palestinians. Already some of the other refugee camps in Lebanon, which are rife with armed groups, are seething with anger at the fighting.
The AP reads Rantburg or LGF!
Did the AP reporter note any face making or eye-rolling?
But the military appeared determined to uproot Fatah Islam after three days of heavy bombardment of the camp, sparked by an attack by the terrorists militants on Lebanese troops on Sunday following a raid on its fighters in the nearby northern city of Tripoli. "Preparations are seriously underway to end the matter," Defense Minister Elias Murr said said in an interview with the Al-Arabiya television. "The army will not negotiate with a group of terrorists and criminals. Their fate is arrest, and if they resist the army, death."
I am liking this guy!
Around half of Nahr el-Bared's 31,000 residents have fled the camp since a halt in the fighting Tuesday night, with families streaming out carrying plastic bags full of clothes. They traveled on foot and in cars, clutching babies, past burned out shops and wrecked cars on streets strewn with broken glass, garbage and even dead rats. But thousands remained behind, either too ill to travel or unwilling to abandon their homes, and are now in danger of being caught in the crossfire.
Has RAB deployed there?
Occasional gunshots broke the quiet Tuesday night, witnesses said, but there was no fighting throughout the day Wednesday. In the afternoon, the army brought seven more armored carriers to its positions ringing the camp. But the troops did not move beyond the front line. Army officials in Beirut refused to comment on the reinforcements.

The first indications of the death toll from the three-days of bombardment began to emerge. UN relief officials said the bodies of at least 20 terrorists civilians were retrieved from inside the camp during the halt in fighting. Murr said 30 Lebanese soldiers have been killed in the battle and put the death toll among terrrorits militants at as many as 60, including fighters from Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Saudi Arabia.
Leb soldiers need to get better, a 2:3 kill ratio simply is not acceptable.
But a top Fatah Islam leader said only 10 of his men have been killed.
Lying asswipe
Fatah Islam said it was ready for a fight.
Yarrr!
A terrorist militant who said he was a deputy leader of the group said Fatah Islam was willing into enter a permanent cease-fire with the military if they are allowed to remain in the camp. But "if they enter, we are ready. They can try but they won't be able to. They will face a massacre," he told the Associated Press in a building in the camp, giving his pseudonym as Abu Hureira and speaking with a Lebanese Arabic accent.

Just how many Fatah Islam are here is not clear, but Abu Hureira said they number more than 500. Lebanese military officials said Wednesday they found the body of a terrorist militant named Abu Madyan, who they said was the group's second-in-command and had been killed in fighting Monday.
Excellent! Waiter! White raisins for all the deaders!

#8  I'm pretty sure Lebanon doesn't have an air force of any kind (except maybe a few trainers). I'm also betting Lebanon doesn't have hardly any armor or heavy artillery.

All of that would be a threat to Syria and Hezbollah, and the Syrians just won't allow it to happen.

#7  I suppose you all know this tall story, recounted at wikipedia:
According to Dors' autobiography, she was once asked to open a fete. Dors lunched with the local Vicar, during which she informed him that her real name was Diana Fluck. The Vicar became somewhat worried about his planned speech. Totally unnerved about mispronouncing "Fluck", he introduced Diana with these immortal words: "Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pleasure that I introduce to you our star guest. We all love her, especially as she is our local girl. I therefore feel it right to introduce her by her real name; Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome the very lovely Miss Diana Clunt."

#8  ...she was once asked to open a fete.

The 2002 Winter Olympics were held in Utah, and Australia's comedy duo H.G. and Roy, who'd covered the 2000 Sydney Olympics so well, were there. One day they interviewed Miss Utah. H.G. was asking about her duties -- for example, if she were to open a fete...

"Fete" is not often used in the US, and of course H.G. said it with an Aussie accent, so Miss Utah miss understood. "Fight?" she laughed. "I don't think I've ever been asked to open a fight!"

OK, it's a boring story, but it's all I got.
