Four Taliban fighters attacked a combined Afghan National Army and Coalition forces combat patrol in the northeast corner of the Sangin District area, Helmand Province, with small arms fire just before nightfall yesterday [April 18 2007].
1st Kandak, 209th ANA Corps soldiers combat advised by U.S. Special Forces, quickly identified the enemy threat and begin engaging with direct and indirect fire. ANA and Coalition forces later detained three Taliban fighters after conducting a search of the enemy position.
The combined ANA and Coalition forces then received intelligence about enemy activity involving an estimated 40 Taliban fighters. After maneuvering to gain contact with the enemy force, U.S. Special Forces requested Coalition air support to engage the Taliban fighters as they were attempting to establish ambush positions.
Approximately 24 Taliban fighters were killed and four vehicles destroyed during the prolonged seven-hour battle.
Two Coalition forces members were wounded during the engagement and were medically evacuated to a nearby treatment facility. They were treated for their minor injuries and are listed in stable condition. There were no injuries to Afghan civilians reported.

US forces recently intercepted Iranian-made weapons intended for Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, the Pentagons top general said on Tuesday, suggesting wider Iranian war involvement in the region.
It appeared to be the first publicly disclosed instance of Iranian arms having entered Afghanistan, although it was not immediately clear whether the weapons came directly from Iran or through a third party. Marine Corps Gen Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that unlike in Iraq, where US officials say they are certain that arms are being supplied to insurgents by Irans Quds Force, the Iranian link in Afghanistan is murky. It is not as clear in Afghanistan which Iranian entity is responsible, but we have intercepted Iran-made weapons in Afghanistan headed for Taliban , Pace told a group of reporters.

Let me put it this way, if a single American city must take a nuclear hit, our politicians have literally begged for it to be Washinton DC. Were it not for the loss of so much national heritage, I'd be cheering such an idea. SUDAN'S government is using airplanes disguised as United Nations craft to carry out bombings in the conflict in Darfur, a newspaper citing a United Nations report said today.
The confidential UN report also said Sudan was violating UN Security Council resolutions by flying arms into the region. The Times' story includes photographs from the UN report of a Sudanese armed forces plane. UN investigators said it had been whitewashed and had "UN'' stenciled on its wing and bombs laid out beside it. It said that this and other planes were being disguised and used to bomb villages and transport cargo in Darfur, where bloody civil violence has caused a humanitarian crisis. The release of the report came after Sudan on Monday agreed following months of delays to let 3000 UN personnel plus helicopters into Darfur to support under-equipped African Union forces trying to stabilize the region.
The UN report, released by a diplomat from a Security Council member nation, said forces on the rebels' side were also guilty of violating UN resolutions and humanitarian standards. It called for a tightening of a Security Council arms embargo on Sudan, the newspaper said.

Gunmen injured six Russian policemen during a night attack on a checkpoint on the outskirts of the Chechen capital, Grozny, on Wednesday, an interior ministry spokesman said on Thursday. "As a result of a night attack, six policemen from Karelia were injured," the spokesman said. Karelia is a republic in the northwest of Russia, bordering Finland.
The attackers were not identified. The spokesman declined to say if police suspected rebels or criminals had launched the attack. Sporadic fighting between Russian forces and rebels continues, although it is mainly confined to the mountainous southern areas of Chechnya.

Turkey on Thursday condemned the gruesome murder of three people at a Christian publishing house, as church leaders warned of a "witch hunt" against their tiny minority in this largely Muslim nation.
Police detained 10 people over Wednesday's attack in this conservative eastern city in which three people, among them a German, were tied to chairs and had their throats slit.
"This is an attack against Turkey's stability, peace and tradition of tolerance," Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said in Ankara, as he voiced concern for the country's image abroad.
"There have been similar attacks in the past... We will certainly take stricter measures," he added.
Turkey is under pressure to guarantee the protection and freedom of non-Muslim minorities as part of its efforts to join the European Union. Non-muslim minorities happened to be once a majority, even during the ottoman rule, and they were quite sizeable in the early 20th century, but they've been driven to practically nothing by the "secular" new turkish nation, through genocide and persecution.
The Zivre (Summit) publishing house, which distributes bibles and publishes Christian literature, had previously been the target of protests by nationalists, media reports said.
In remarks to the Italian daily La Stampa, the papal envoy to Turkey linked the killings to upcoming presidential elections, noting the "presence of well-known fanatical, ultra-nationalist groups."
"Events like this have already happened during electoral campaigns," Monsignor Antonio Lucibello said.
Pope Benedict XVI made a landmark visit to Turkey in November -- his first to a Muslim country -- during which he stressed that respect for religious freedom must be a criterion for EU membership.
Ambassadors from the 27 EU member countries met in Istanbul on Thursday, after which the envoy from Germany, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency urged Ankara to take measures to protect religious freedoms.
"We see the murders as an attack not only against individuals, but also against the principles of freedom and tolerance," German Ambassador Eckhart Cuntz said.
Turkish newspapers said all those arrested at the scene were carrying copies of a letter that read: "We did it for our country. They are trying to take our country away, take our religion away."
Protestant leaders here spoke of a growing intolerance towards Christians, which they said was being fuelled by politicians and the media.
"Today in Turkey, there is a missionary hunt, just like the witch hunts of medieval times," Ihsan Ozbek, a leader of the Alliance of Protestant Churches in Turkey, said.
"Turkey is facing dangers and threats unprecedented in its history. The fact is that Turkey has become a place of unprecedented intolerance and rejection," he said.
Speaking to reporters in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, European Parliament member Joost Lagendijk said the killings would send Europe a negative message.
"Europe will perceive the killings to mean that those who attempt to seek converts to other faiths in Turkey will face a similar fate," Lagendijk said. "It is very important for the government to appeal for the acceptance of different religions and ethnic backgrounds."
The dead were identified as German Tilman Geske and Turkish nationals Ugur Yuksel and Necati Aydin, the pastor of Malatya's 30-strong Protestant community.
Proselytizing is not banned but generally viewed with suspicion in Turkey, whose population is 99 percent Muslim; small Greek Othodox, Catholic, Armenian and Jewish communities are concentrated mainly in Istanbul.
The Protestant community consists of some 3,200 people, Ozbek said.
In February 2006, Italian Catholic priest Andrea Santoro was shot dead as he prayed in his church in the northern city of Trabzon. A teenager was convicted of the murder and jailed for nearly 19 years.
In January, journalist Hrant Dink, a prominent member of Turkey's Armenian community, was gunned down in an Istanbul street. A 17-year-old, detained along with 11 other suspected ultra-nationalists, confessed to the killing.

A Pakistani terror suspect has appeared in court here 18 months after being handed over by South Africa and is being held for alleged links to the 2005 London bombings, his lawyer has said. Khalid Mehmood Rashid (25) attended a federal review board hearing at the Supreme Court in Islamabad for the first time last week and his detention was extended by three months, his lawyer Hashmat Habib said today.
London-based human rights group Amnesty International said Rashid was handed over to Pakistan by South Africa in November 2005, and had been in the custody of Pakistan's intelligence service as of April 16. A Pakistani security source confirmed that Khalid's contacts to the London bombers were being investigated.
"Mr Rashid has already suffered 18 months of secret detention and it is totally unacceptable for the Pakistan authorities to continue to deny him access to his lawyer, family and medical care," said Erwin van der Borght, acting director of Amnesty's Africa programme.

Coalition airpower supported Coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations April 18, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.
In Afghanistan, a U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer provided a show of force near Tirgari. The mission was reported as successful.
A U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle dropped a Guided Bomb Unit-38 on an enemy firing position in a building near Sangin. The building was destroyed and a Joint Terminal Attack Controller confirmed a good hit.
JTACs are highly trained U.S. Air Force personnel who advise ground commanders on appropriate air power support, relay the ground commanders intent to air power assets overhead and communicate with aircrews for precision engagement.
In total, 32 close air support missions were flown in support of the International Security Assistance Force and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.
Eleven U.S. Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two U.S. Navy and Royal Air Force aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.
In Iraq, U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs released cannon rounds at anti-Iraqi forces digging up weapons near Baqubah. A JTAC confirmed successful effects and the weapons cache was destroyed. The pilots also provided reconnaissance along several nearby routes and reported suspicious personnel and vehicles to a JTAC for further action...
It means an overhead flyby in full burner at -100 feet. In other situations, the bad guys have been known to stagger out with bleeding ears. :)

Failure in Iraq will unleash sectarian strife and extremism and will be felt first in the Middle East, visiting US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said on Wednesday.
Speaking to a US Chamber of Commerce luncheon on the third day of his Middle East tour, Gates exhorted Arab countries to use their influence to dampen the insurgency and encourage political reconciliation in Iraq. Whatever disagreements we might have over how we got to this point in Iraq, the consequences of a failed state in Iraq - of chaos there - will adversely impact the security and prosperity of every nation in the Middle East and Gulf region, Gates said in remarks prepared for delivery.
He warned that while some who disagree with the war may be cheering for failure in Iraq, these sentiments are dangerously shortsighted and self-destructive. The initial effects of failure, he said, will first be felt in Middle East capitals and communities well before they are felt in Washington or New York.
Gates reaffirmed the US commitment to Iraq and to protecting allies in the area - while also alluding to the raging debate between the Democratically controlled Congress and the Bush administration over bringing an end to the war. The arguments, he said, probably reflect those going on across the Middle East but do not suggest the US is not determined to keep working with its allies in the region. That is a responsibility we will not abandon, a trust we will not break, he said. Gates also said that Iran and Syria need to become part of the solution by reducing the violence and helping promote reconciliation in Iraq.

Here Gates seems to get it, but then at some other ocassion, he utters something so inane that one wonders what mish-mash he has in his head.
First, you NEVER use the weasel-s**t about "whatever the disagreements about how we got here" - it grants irresponsible critics who are and were wrong about every important point an undeserved legitimacy.
Second, the message about continuing to work with our allies was exactly the wrong one. Instead he should have made some news by suggesting that, if countries that had sometimes benefitted from cooperation with the US did not do everything they could to help ensure success in Iraq, they could be facing a grim future and the US might lack the capacity or desire to help them.
What would they do if they heard that, retaliate by poisoning minds against us with lies and propaganda, or allow their citizens to help finance barbaric terror in Iraq? Oops - already doing that ....

Actually, Joe and the writer of this article make a point that we tend not to notice, because we are looking at the negative impacts that the current crop of anti-American democrats, loons, and terrorists have made into our own once great and peaceful societies.
ME and liberals have in common the self-destructive tendency to be more interested in spiting their enemies than they are in their own self preservation. Both use the forces of blame and hatred and division to achieve power, but in the end the fires that they set do not discriminate and burn everything in their path.
The ME is like a riot in a ghetto. It is a very self destructive act. The participants feel good and powerful while they lash out and burn cars and businesses and beat up the random people whom they have chosen to blame, but in the morning, they have to live in the mess that they have created.

As I read JosepHM's post, he's saying that George Bush has already won, and Osama bin Laden and his allies the anti-WoT Democratic Party/Progressives have already lost. Western troops -- and even more so the seductive, addictive Western concepts tied to freedom of the individual (capitalism, democracy, modernity) -- are well settled throughout the Ummah, particularly surrounding Iran... and Bush still has time to strengthen our grip. If, in an attempt to get a Democrat into the White House, the jihadis/Iran do something as dramatic as explode a nuke in a US city, the Dems will have to continue Bush's policies, and thus be forced to give up their raison d'etre. Iran's Mullahcracy is toast, either through our military response to a major provocation, or through implosion as the effects of the sanctions are felt. Quite a change from his early, despairing posts about how the world transnationalist elites were going to force us to submit to UN rule.
Or so it seems to me. There are those who are better translators of Joe's special, information-dense shorthand.

Iraq is the focal point. All sides have put big resources in it to affect the outcome. Walk away from this one and defeat will follow us in the ME, esp in the Persian Gulf with little delicately balanced countries, esp near Iran.
Let the Dems win and we will be back to the Clintonian law-enforcement model of fighting Islamic terrorists. Which means to say nothing but window dressing and bombing aspirin factories.

TW did a good job of translating JoeM. The real question is how well or even if the freedom/individual liberty/personal responsibility seeds we've been trying to sow are going to take root. If we leave does everything just return to the previous status quo of tribalism and islam? Unfortunately, I think it does. There has not been a period of time where the situation on the ground got significantly better so there is no time or experienced condition for which the Iraqi people will wistfully pine (other than the Kurds).

Two explosions rocked Baghdad at midday Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and wounding 19, police said.
Meanwhile, U.S. troops killed five suspects and captured 30 others in a raid in Iraq's western Anbar province, a day after police uncovered 17 decomposing corpses beneath two school yards in the provincial capital.
The U.S. military also announced a discovery made nearly a week earlier - 3,000 gallons of nitric acid hidden in a warehouse in downtown Baghdad. U.S. forces found the acid - a key component in fertilizer but also explosives - during a routine search operation last Thursday, the military said.
The U.S. raid took place early Wednesday near Karmah, a town northeast of Fallujah, which lies 40 miles west of Baghdad.
American forces raided a group of buildings suspected of being used by militants, and found explosives inside one of them, the military said in a statement. A helicopter was called in, and dropped precision-guided bombs on the cluster of buildings, it said.
Meanwhile, troops came under fire and reacted in ''self-defense,'' the statement said - killing five Iraqis and wounding four others.
The wounded were taken to a military hospital and remained in U.S. custody. Twenty-six others were captured as well, the military said.
Later, the military issued another statement that one suspect was killed and eight captured in two more raids Wednesday north of Baghdad. Some of the suspects were believed to be linked to al-Qaida in Iraq, and to a militant cell that has used chlorine in car bombings, the statement said.
The bodies found a day earlier at school yards in Ramadi, Anbar's provincial capital, were discovered after students and teachers returned to the schools a week ago and noticed an increasingly putrid odor and stray dogs digging in the area, Police Maj. Laith al-Dulaimi said.
He said one body had not yet been recovered from a separate burial site behind one of the schools because authorities feared it was booby-trapped with a bomb.
Ramadi had been a stronghold of Sunni insurgents and al-Qaida fighters until recently, when the U.S. forces in the region and the Iraqi government successfully negotiated with many local tribal leaders to split them off from the more militant insurgent groups.
Thousands of young Sunni men have joined the police force in Anbar province and have taken up the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq, the umbrella organization that includes al-Qaida.

In many of these raids the ratio of captured to dead and wounded seems high for people who don't mind dying. Do they surrender or do they drop their weapons and attempt to melt into the population.
The Marines Corps says murder and a second charge against a sergeant have been dropped and that he will testify at the trials of fellow Marines accused in the deadliest criminal case to arise from the Iraq war.
Sgt. Sanick P. Dela Cruz, 24, had been charged with unpremeditated murder in the death of five Iraq civilians. Lt. Gen. James Mattis made the decision to dismiss the charges against Dela Cruz on April 2 and grant immunity. The announcement was made Tuesday without explanation.

Muslim extremists decapitated six workers they were holding hostage on the southern Philippine island of Jolo, a senior military official said on Thursday. Major-General Ruben Rafael, commander of military forces on Jolo, said his soldiers discovered the headless bodies close to Parang town, where the workers were kidnapped on Monday by the Abu Sayyaf, the Philippines' deadliest Muslim rebel group.
The Abu Sayyaf gained international notoriety around five years ago when they captured and beheaded tourists and church workers, and its members still kidnap people for ransom to raise funds. They decapitated the son of a wealthy trader last year.
This week, the Abu Sayyaf had demanded a 5 million peso (52,400 pounds) payment for the release of the six men, who were working on a government road project and taken at gunpoint from their truck. A seventh man was kidnapped in the area earlier that day.
Authorities in the Philippines are offering a $21,000 reward for the capture Habier Malik, a Muslim rebel commander believed linked to the Abu Sayyaf group. The Voice of America reported Wednesday the Philippine government has blamed Malik for the recent fighting on Jolo island in which 21 have died.
Malik, identified as a renegade commander of the Moro National Liberation Front, and his group are accused of firing mortar rounds last week on two Philippine Marine camps. The fighting that followed also displaced thousands of people on the island, the report said.
Last February, Malik was accused of holding a Philippine general hostage for two days, the report said. The Philippine military says Malik has several hundred armed followers, and may now be working with the Abu Sayyaf, which is demanding a Muslim homeland in the Philippines.
The military was quoted as saying the reward money is for the capture of Malik and his followers, and is not aimed against the MNLF, with whom the government has signed a peace treaty.
Two Buddhist rubber plantation workers were killed and a senior police officer was critically wounded in suspected insurgent attacks in Thailand's Muslim-majority far south, officials said on Wednesday.
Suspected separatists shot the workers in Narathiwat province late on Tuesday and decapitated one of them, a police officer said in the largely ethnic Malay region, a sultanate until annexed by Thailand a century ago. "The two were cutting rubber trees when they were hit by a shotgun. One of them had his head cut off and it is still missing," Police Colonel Saravud Netrsawang told Reuters from Narathiwat's Srisakorn District.
A series of bombings Wednesday morning in at least five spots in two districts of this troubled southern border province, putting much electrical distribution capacity out of service in this southernmost province, and bringing a complete blackout to the provincial seat for several hours.
Police Colonel Napadol Phueksomol, Deputy Commissioner of Narathiwat Provincial Police, lost his left leg while leading a bomb disposal unit to defuse an explosive device on the Narathiwat-Tak Bai Road. The wounded officer was rushed to Songkhlanagarin Hospital in nearby Hat Yai district of Songkhla.
Two 5-kg bombs on the Sungai Kolok-Tak Bai Road in Narathiwat's Tak Bai district brought down a high-voltage electrical transmission tower at the roadside at 6 am. The explosion caused extensive interruption to electricity distribution, as well as telephone and internet services.
Another bomb exploded at a power pole behind government civil servant apartments in Tak Bai district. Two more bombs went off at an electrical power relay tower in Kaluwo Nuea district and the other behind Bang Nara Buddhist Temple. The explosions damaged electricity generators and transformers, and caused a total blackout in Narathiwat's Muang district for some hours.
More suspicious objects were found in multiple locations in the municipality district. Authorities closed many roads so that bomb disposal units could inspect suspicious objects and defuse any remaining explosive devices.
