Talibunnies Killed in Helmand
TALIBAN SENIOR LEADER TARGETED IN ASSAULT

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Several Taliban fighters were killed during an assault by Afghan National Army and Coalition forces early Monday morning near the town of Gershk in the Nahr Surkh District of Helmand Province.

A group of Taliban fighters initiated hostilities by firing a rocket propelled grenade at Afghan and Coalition forces. Forces then engaged and killed the Taliban fighters; a battle damage assessment had not yet determined the exact number of terrorists killed.
I wonder if they got anybody significant.

The assault was conducted based on substantial information provided about a Taliban senior leader operating in the neighboring province of Kandahar. The targeted individual has ties to Mullah Mohammad Osmani and Mullah Mohammad Omar.

During the assault, an Afghan National Army vehicle overturned in a ravine. One ANA soldier received a non-life threatening injury and was taken to a Coalition hospital for further treatment, and the vehicle was destroyed on site. There were no reported casualties to Afghan or Coalition forces during this operation.

Briefly, it's a Muslim title, meaning lord, applied to a scholar or religious leader, especially in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. The term is not used in Arabic-speaking areas, where its nearest equivalent is shaykh (implying formal Islamic training)...

Afghan police die in Taliban ambush
Taliban fighters have ambushed a truck carrying police in southern Afghanistan, killing four officers and injuring three others. Asmatullah Alizai, a provincial police chief, said the attack occurred on Friday evening near Talukan village in Kandahar province's Panjwayi district. Alizai said the three injured were in a serious condition.

Taliban fighters beheaded two men in the village in December, saying they were working with Nato forces. Nato troops killed more than 500 Taliban in the Panjwayi area in September, largely clearing the region of fighters in an offensive called Operation Medusa. Canadian and US special forces are currently working to increase security in the area. More Afghan security checkpoints have been set up, a new road is being built, and schools and clinics are reopening.

In nearby Helmand province, suspected Taliban fighters attacked a convoy of Nato and Afghan troops on Friday. Ghulam Nabi Malakhail, a provincial police chief, said the ambush sparked a four-hour gunbattle that left 11 Taliban dead. The Taliban took their dead fighters off the battlefield, but Malakhail said officials learned of how many had died through intelligence contacts.

On Saturday a suicide attacker detonated an explosives-filled vehicle near a Nato convoy in southern Afghanistan, missing the foreign soldiers by metres but causing no casualties, police said. The man blew up his car bomb as he tried to get close to an international security assistance force (ISAF) convoy around 10km east of Kandahar city. The attacker was blown to pieces and body parts were flung across the area, as was his shattered vehicle. Andre Salloum, a captain and ISAF spokesman in Kandahar, confirmed the attack.

Kenya deports dozens Islamist suspects to Mogadishu
(SomaliNet) At least 20 prisoners linked with the ousted Islamists have been deported on Sunday from Kenya to Somalia capital Mogadishu after being held in the Kenyan custody since January. A plane carrying the prisoners flew today from Nairobi heading to Mogadishu, Somalia capital.

The government officials did not give details about the deported detainees but some reports say that the prisoners reached Mogadishu and were taken to unknown destination.
Perhaps a few ended up at Ice Station Zebra.
Earlier Kenya extradited 74 suspects to the interim government in Somalia in two flights. This brings the figure of deported Islamists to 94 as no one knows where they are being held in Somalia.

Four killed, military chief injured in Somali bombing
MOGADISHU - At least four people were killed and two dozen wounded Sunday when a bomb exploded in the southern Somali port of Kismayo, witnesses said. The explosion was another sign of spiralling instability in the shattered east African nation.
'Spiralling instability'? When was Somalia last 'stable'?
Among the injured was the recently appointed Somali military chief General Adbi Mohamed, who was addressing scores of residents in the town, about 500 kilometres (310 miles) south of the capital Mogadishu, a senior army officer Addurasak Asgadud told AFP.

‘At least four people have been killed and more than 24 wounded after a bomb exploded at a ceremony where people welcomed the new military chief,’ said Muhammed Shaikh Duale, who was attending the meeting.

Another witness, Leila Aban, said people ran for safety after the explosion, but many seemed to have been injured when a grenade or a bomb was tossed to the crowd. ‘I saw a lot of people with blood. I couldn’t count the number but there were a lot of casualties. People were killed and others wounded,’ Aban added.

Blast Reported Near U.S. Base in Japan (Followup)
A small explosion occurred outside a U.S. Army base south of Tokyo late Monday, police and military officials said. A Japanese news report said police suspected an attempted attack on the base.
Is it that time of year again?
The Army was investigating the blast, said an official at Camp Zama who spoke on condition of anonymity, adding that there were no reports of injuries or damage. "A small explosion was heard in the vicinity of the base," said Maj. David Smith, a Pentagon spokesman. "It did not occur on the base."
Careful not to hit the PX and disturb the shoppers. Not much else on Zama.
Kyodo News agency reported that police had found a "launch pad" near the base and suspected an attempted guerrilla attack. The Army could not immediately confirm what had caused the explosion.
It'll be another homemade mortar or rocket launcher.
A Kanagawa Prefecture police official who only gave his name as Okamura said Zama residents reported hearing the explosion around 11 p.m. and police were investigating.

In 2002, two blasts were heard outside Camp Zama, and Japanese police found a metal projectile and a crude mortar made from a metal pipe nearby. nvestigators blamed radical guerrillas for the explosions, which caused no injuries.
They'd be terribly upset if they did hit anyone. Couple years ago they lobbed one onto the Yokota AB golf course...at night.
Leftist extremists in Japan have used projectile launchers against targets related to the U.S. military or on sites connected to the royal family.
While the rightwing extremists drive around the U.S. bases in black vans with big loudspeakers on top...
The attacks are usually more symbolic than dangerous, and injuries or significant damage are rare.
It's their annual "We're still here" attack. I'll wager the police know who does it, but doesn't arrest them because of a "gentleman's agreement".

The United States has some 50,000 troops based in Japan under a security treaty. Residents complain of crime, pollution and noise connected to the bases, but large-scale protests of the military presence are largely confined to the southern island of Okinawa.
UPDATE: Police searched the area near the U.S. Army's Camp Zama base southwest of Tokyo and found two pipes about 300 meters (yards) from the base, the spokesman said, adding they were investigating the incident.

Japan's Kyodo news agency quoted police as saying the pipes may have been used to launch a small bomb at the base. A similar incident occurred in November 2002, when two homemade rockets were launched toward Camp Zama from near the same park. Kyodo said the explosion was heard by a resident near the camp at around 11 p.m. (1400 GMT/9 a.m. EST) on Monday.
Can I call it or what?

#1  Question to the military experts out there. What does the US really get out of Okinawa that we couldn't get out of shifting the bases to Guam. Is the proximity really that big a difference?

It's not as if Japan needs our defending, or that an attack on them will be ignored because the US wasn't specifically targetted. Guam is our territory, let them enjoy the Military paychecks for awhile.

#2  The attacks are usually more symbolic than dangerous

I wonder if that is the whole point, what with the Japanese being so civil and all. I recall a subway strike that closed down the transit system from around 3am to 5am so the transit workers could express their disapproval but no one would be inconvenienced.
Posted by: SteveS || 02/12/2007 16:40 Comments || Top||

#3  Is the proximity really that big a difference?

The difference between being able to operate for ten minutes followed by two times two hours transit and being able to patrol for four hours.
Posted by: JFM || 02/12/2007 16:49 Comments || Top||

#4  Location, location, location. 600 miles from Kyushu, 400 miles from China and Taiwan, and 700 miles from Korea. All within F-15 unrefueled combat radius. Guam is 1600 miles from Taiwan and even further from the other 3.

Besides, you know the Marines. Once they take a piece of ground, they hate to give it back. For the Marines, Okinawa is not as important except to keep the division together, though the CH-53 (and CH-47) can make it to Taiwan w/o refueling. Guam would be better since it has more unbuilt spaces to train and less air threat in case of embarkation onto transports.

Kashmir protesters seek remains of leader hanged 23 years ago
Police detained more than two dozen Kashmiri activists on Sunday demanding ponies, Allan's Snack Bar gift cards , and the remains of a separatist, hanged and buried in a New Delhi jail 23 years ago, during a demonstration to mark his death anniversary. Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, founder of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), a prominent separatist group, was executed on February 11, 1984 on the charge of killing an Indian intelligence officer.
"Hand over the remains of the father of nation, Shaheed (martyr) Maqbool Bhat to Kashmiris," read a banner carried by protesters led by senior JKLF activists in Srinagar. "We want freedom ... return the mortal remains of Maqbool Bhat," shouted the protesters, many carrying photographs of their leader.
Five years after Bhat's execution, militants launched an armed revolt against Indian rule in the Muslim-majority Kashmir region. Officials say more than 40,000 have been killed since then. But human rights groups put the toll at around 60,000 dead or missing. JKLF, which declared a ceasefire in 1994 against Indian security forces, says it leads a political struggle for Kashmir's complete independence both from India and Pakistan, who claim the region in full but rule in parts. JKLF called a strike in Kashmir on Sunday to mark Bhat's execution. Some protestors threw stones at police who fired tear gas shells in response. "The clash continued for an hour, no one was injured," Ali Mohammad, a police official said. "We have detained JKLF activists for precautionary measures." Kashmir has witnessed widespread protests in the past two weeks over allegations policemen had killed innocent civilians in staged gun battles and passed them off as militants to claim rewards.

Beards to stay in Bajaur
Barbers in Bajaur Agency have decided not to shave men’s beards following threats by unidentified men, the BBC Urdu service reported on Sunday. In an emergency meeting summoned at Inayat Kallay, five kilometres from Bajaur Agency’s main town Khar, local barbers decided that they would stop shaving men. A local barber told BBC Urdu that according to their decision, they (the barbers) would display notices outside their shops that customers should not push them for shaves. The Bajaur political administration confirmed to BBC Urdu that unidentified men had circulated pamphlets in the agency two days ago, threatening the local barbers to stop shaving men or face the consequences. The handwritten pamphlet stated that shaving beards was un-Islamic and the barbers should not violate the Sunnah in any way.

Iraq
Bombs strike market areas in Baghdad, killing 14 people and wounding dozens
BAGHDAD (AP) - Two parked car bombs and a bomb hidden in a plastic bag struck market districts in central Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 14 people and wounding dozens, police said.
The violence started about 11:50 a.m. when the parcel bomb exploded in a crowded area near a popular take-away falafel restaurant in the Bab al-Sharqi area, police said, adding that at least six people were killed and 16 were wounded.

About 30 minutes later, two cars packed with explosives blew up in quick succession near the Shorja market district, collapsing a building and setting stores on fire. At least eight people were killed and 26 were wounded in the two blasts, which occurred within 100 metres of each other.

#3  Disturbing tactic - blow up the womenfolk in the marketplaces and bring down a government by demonstrating it cannot fulfull its primary job responsibility of protecting the women and children. I fear there are no possible positive outcomes - the only way to stop the carnage is harsh, tyrannical rule (by whovever can field the harshest, most tyrannical force.)

It also sets a precedent, a template of how Islam will conquer the West - how many WalMarts (or Nieman-Marcuses) will they have to blow up in Los Angeles or Houston etc. before the sheeple demand the government 'do something'? And that 'something' would be a choice between surrender and a police state - or a combination of the two.

Anarchy is the initial result of this tactic, and it makes the people willing to accept almost anything to restore order.

No, just eliminate the muslims. While not all muslims are terrorists, the vast majority of all terrorists are muslims. Getting rid of the muslims will eliminate the terror. As for the battle in Iraq, we lost the opportunity at the beginning to teach these idiots we were stronger than their "god". There should have been a massive "shock and awe" bombing campaign on one of their military installations near Baghdad, using a dozen BUFFS. One would have been sufficient. Then we could tell Tater that if he doesn't get with the program we'll do the same thing to Sadr City, or any other location that we find difficult to pacify. Dead men don't fight, and the islamonutz don't feel dead women and children are anything to fuss about.

#5  Bombs strike market areas in Baghdad, killing 14 people and wounding dozens

Iraqi brag about their ancient governments, scribes and mathematics. And in the Iraqi blogs I've had many "discussions" with Iraqis who insist that under Saddam Iraqis were a very organized society.

Well how come Iraqis can't even organize a market system where by they eliminate at least the car and truck bombs from entering into high density human areas? pathetic..

Using picture IDs, dogs and other screening methods you could practically eliminate splodydopes from entering food markets too.

If Iraqis can't devise a workable food market system in 4 years that protects them from most bombs/bombers then they are indeed.. truly hopeless ..

Suicide car bomber kills 15 near Baghdad
A suicide bomber driving a truck packed with explosives killed at least 15 people on Sunday when he attacked a police station north of Baghdad, police said. Police said they were caught off-guard by the bomber, who ignored the main gate to the station and instead rammed the poorly guarded entrance to an adjoining municipal building. He then drove across open ground and smashed his vehicle into the police station, which is in the town of Dour near Tikrit, 175 km north of Baghdad. A police major in Dour said at least 15 people were killed and 25 wounded. The deputy governor of Salaheddin province, Abdullah Jabara, put the death toll at five killed and seven wounded. Police Lieutenant Abdullah Jassem, stationed at a hospital in Tikrit, said it had received nine bodies and eight wounded.

The explosion brought down one side of the building and police said the death toll could rise as they were still searching through the rubble. The dead included policemen and civilians. Local residents who rushed to the scene tried to help with rescue efforts before civil defence squads arrived with shovels to remove the debris and pull out the dead and those injured. US and Iraqi forces later surrounded the area.

Bashir Masour, a 46-year-old labourer, said the explosion blew out the windows of his house, about 500 meters (yards) away. “I ran to help and I saw destruction everywhere, along with charred bodies and body parts. Blood was spilled across a big area,” he said. “I carried six people who I thought were still alive but then realised they had died after being torn apart by shrapnel.”

Elsewhere in Baghdad, a parked car bomb exploded near an intersection, killing two people and wounding three in Mansour, an upscale western neighbourhood that has been the scene of repeated bombings and kidnappings, police said. A US soldier also was killed on Sunday after coming under small-arms fire northeast of Baghdad, the military said, raising the number of American troops who have died this month to 37.

In other violence reported by police on Sunday, gunmen shot dead eight men when they ambushed their vehicle northwest of Mosul, Iraq’s third-largest city, and raked it with machinegun fire. Police said Saturday’s ambush took place on the main road between the towns of Sinjar and Rabiyaa. The men had been returning home after registering at a border guard recruitment centre in Sinjar. It appeared they were deliberately targeted by gunmen who may have been watching them in Sinjar and then followed them out of town, police said.

Iraq says it executed 14 convicted terrorists
The Iraqi government said 14 convicted "terrorists" were executed Sunday for murder, kidnappings and rape in five of Iraq's 18 provinces. The statement did not say when or where the suspects were convicted. It also did not specify the method of execution, although hanging is the method used in Iraq for civilians sentenced to death. The fourteen were involved in murder, kidnappings and rape in the provinces of Karbala, Basra, Wasit and Diwaniyah, all south of Baghdad, and Kirkuk in northern Iraq, according to the statement.

140 arrested in Baghdad sweeps: US military
BAGHDAD - US and Iraqi forces have arrested 140 people and uncovered 14 weapons stashes in a week as they they ramp up a security operation in Baghdad, the US military said on Sunday. The combined forces ‘uncovered 14 weapons caches and detained 140 insurgent suspects in and around the Iraqi capital during the week of February 3-9,’ a statement said.

Military officials said they were focusing on the Rusafa district, a predominantly Shia area east of the Tigris river. ‘Rusafa is a focal point for us right now,’ the statement quoted Brigadier General John Campbell as saying. ‘We’re addressing that area with increased security forces and patrols.’

The joint Iraqi-US patrols are a key element in the Baghdad security plan designed to restore control of no-go areas to forces controlled by Iraq’s unity government. Up to 50,000 Iraqi security forces and 35,000 US troops are to eventually take part in what many Democrats consider a last-ditch operation to save Iraq from plunging into a full-scale civil war.

Campbell said he was encouraged by early results of the operations, but cautioned that ‘the implementation of the new security plan for Baghdad is just beginning.’

The plan is to use a major influx of forces to occupy and retain districts by implanting joint combat posts where Iraqi troops and US soldiers are to be based around the clock. Several such posts have been established, one of which was attacked Saturday in the northeastern Adhamiyah district, a frontline between Sunni and Shia fighters.

Former Fatah attorney-general kidnapped by Hamas
The former Palestinian Authority attorney-general, who is affiliated with Fatah, was kidnapped Monday morning by Hamas operatives, Army Radio reported. The kidnapping came while the Palestinian Authority awaited the return of its prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, from Mecca, where he recently signed a treaty for a unity government with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader-in-exile Khaled Mashaal.

First nighttime Arrow missile defense test successful
In face of Iran's effort to obtain nuclear weapons, the Israel Air Force successfully conducted its 15th test of the Arrow missile defense system on Sunday night. Officials said the Arrow was capable of intercepting Iranian nuclear missiles. Defense officials explained that the test, the first conducted at night, was unique since it was held under extreme circumstances and was meant to "meet future threats to the State of Israel."

The test was overseen by the Defense Ministry's Homa Missile Defense Agency and was conducted at the IAF Palmahim Base south of Ashdod. It was the first time that the missile interceptor used was made up of parts of which were also built by Boeing in the United States.

The last time the Arrow was tested was in December 2005, and defense officials said that Sunday night's test was not connected to the Iranian nuclear threat but was part of the periodic tests the missile defense system undergoes. The launcher used in the test was an upgraded version and was fitted with active protection that defends the system against enemy attacks. "The Arrow has once again proven its ability to defend Israel against current and future threats," explained a senior defense official involved in the test. According to the official, the Arrow underwent periodic upgrades and developments so it could successfully counter missiles under development in enemy countries.

The test took place at 9:18 PM when the Arrow 2 interceptor took off towards a Black Sparrow test missile, fired by an F-15 fighter jet, and designed to simulate an incoming Iranian Shihab missile headed toward Israel. The Green Pine Radar located and identified the incoming missile and the Citroen Tree battle management center related the information to the Arrow 2 battery.

#3  You can have all the Arrows that you want, but in an exchange, Iran can have hundreds of missiles firing, many of them decoys. Only one nuke needs to get through to ruin Israel as a habitable place. Israel, on the other hand, must stop every one.

Missile defense, though necessary for Israel, is not sufficient to protect against the Iranian threat. So what is the strategy, Mr. Olmert? Better not be in the style of the half-executed plan against Hizb'Allah in Lebanon.

#5  "You can have all the Arrows that you want, but in an exchange, Iran can have hundreds of missiles firing, many of them decoys. Only one nuke needs to get through to ruin Israel as a habitable place. Israel, on the other hand, must stop every one."

OTOH, if youre Iran, and you have say two nukes, and you fire them both plus say 30 decoys, and the two real nukes get hit, youve done diddly squat to Israel, and you may very well see some really bad consequences to Iran. MIGHT make you think twice.

An ideal strategy? No, but given the problems with all the others, worth pursuing.

#9  "Do you know how many Arrows you need to fire to assure 90% success"

No, I dont, and await eagerly posts by the technically more knowledgeable. OTOH I dont know you need 90% success to make Iran uncertain as to the "success" of their attack. If they have two genuine bombs, and a few dozen decoys, and you get 50% hits, theres a non-zero probability youve killed both of the genuine bombs.
Posted by: liberalhawk || 02/12/2007 13:39 Comments || Top||

#10  32, at least, LH. So now, if Iran has 2 nukes and 3000 decoys, how many Arrows do you need?

#12  I fail to see where night or day makes any difference to a missle.

Well, some of them have pale skin and sunburn easily in the harsh glare of day. On a more serious note, you wouldn't expect it to matter to radar, but if they are also using some sort of electro-optical sensor, I can see (heh) it making a difference.
Posted by: SteveS || 02/12/2007 16:46 Comments || Top||

#13  Arrow has both radar and infrared seekers. Works best if the Iranians don't launch at 10AM.
Posted by: ed || 02/12/2007 17:06 Comments || Top||

#14  My point is that Olmert, who is leader of the Israeli government, is facing a situation, which, when dragging out, will put the odds more against Israel. If Israel waits for Iran to build up and shoot first, then activate the defense system, then Israel is playing the odds very close, betting the farm, so to speak.

With regard to the political situation and the advisability of holding off an attack against the MMs of Iran, that's Israel's call. It still does not change the very real catastrophic consequences of an Iranian missile attack.

We can sit here in the relative comfort of our NA continent, and to some extent Europe. We can play these "what-if" games smugly from the comfort of our homes, but Israel is playing for keeps. One well placed hit, the right meteorological conditions, and Israel is uninhabitable.

Israel is the canary in the coal mine.
Posted by: Alaska Paul || 02/12/2007 22:12 Comments || Top||

#15  AP, I wouldn't try to guess that Olmert thinks. But I can imagine that advice he gets.
The probability that MM use nukes on Israel is less than unity. The probability that Israel, and most Diaspora Jews, will be destroyed by the "indignant humanity" if we pre-empt Iran is unity.

Southeast Asia
Troops kill four militants in the Philippines
Four militants were killed and two captured during clashes with police pursuing militants linked to Al Qaida on a southern island in the Philippines on Monday, the military said. Two militants were killed when the elite army Scout Rangers fought with around 40 Abu Sayyaf rebels in Talipao town on Jolo island, Brigadier General Reynaldo Mapagu said. He said the rebels were led by Albader Parad, who carries a bounty on his head.

Earlier on Monday, two gunmen were killed and two were arrested after they opened fire on Philippine Marines who were approaching the village of Andanan, said marine spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ariel Caculitan. He said it wasn't immediately clear whether the gunmen belonged to the Abu Sayyaf group, the target of a month long US-backed offensive on Jolo, but added, "As of the moment, we treat them as members of an armed group."

Sri Lanka
2 Tamil rebels killed in clash with army
Sri Lankan troops clashed with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, leaving two of the guerrillas dead in the country’s volatile north, the military said Sunday. The Tigers attacked army troops on a foot patrol Saturday in Welioya, about 255 kilometers northeast of the capital, Colombo, said senior Defence Ministry official Lt Col Upali Rajapakse. The soldiers retaliated and two insurgents were killed in the fight, Rajapakse said. There was no immediate comment from the rebels. The tigers have fought government troops since 1983 in an attempt to create an independent homeland for minority ethic Tamils after decades of discrimination by the majority Sinhalese.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria has given Russian-made SA-18 "Grouse" Igla 9K38 anti-air missiles to Lebanese Hizballah
(Debka)
Moscow guaranteed the shoulder-carried SA-18 "Grouse" Igla 9K38 was sold to Damascus under the strict prohibition of its transfer to Hizballah, DEBKAfile notes. The pledge was given to the US and personally by Russian president Vladimir Putin to Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert.

A Lebanese army source says the advanced missile consignment may have been concealed in the Beqaa valley of Lebanon near the Syrian border for use by Hizballah, which intends to significantly increase its anti-aircraft capabilities for any future war with Israel.

The Grouse is a surface-air heat-seeking missile designed to shoot down low-flying planes and helicopters at a range of up to 5,200 meters and altitude of 3,500 meters.

The missile employs an IR guidance system. It offers better protection against electro-optical jammers. According to the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), the SA-18 probability of kill against an unprotected fighter is estimated at 30-48%, and the use of IRCM jammers only degrades this to 24-30%.

German-Syrian who knew 9/11 culprits gets 12 yrs.
A German-Syrian dual national believed to have known the September 11 hijackers received a 12-year prison sentence Sunday from a Syrian court, a Syrian human rights group said. The Higher State Security Court on Sunday sentenced Mohammed Haydar Zammar to life in prison for membership in the banned Muslim Brotherhood organization. But the court immediately commuted the sentence to 12 years, the National Organization for Human Rights in Syria said in a written statement. Syrian officials almost never comment on court cases or arrests of dissidents, and it is human rights groups that usually bring such incidents to public attention. Calls to a German embassy official in Damascus for comment on the sentence were not answered.

Fred's Thugburg news articles put his age at 38, 41, 45...

So in a no-early release penal system after Zammar serves the full 12 years, he'll be 50 or 53 or 57 years old when he is released.

In a perfect system I'll be able to pay a guard and have Zammar hung on hooks till he rots off of them.
