A suicide car bomber was killed on Thursday in an abortive attack on Nato troops near the town of Farah in western Afghanistan. Officials say that the bomber's explosive device detonated too soon and that no-one else was injured.

They say that the bomb exploded in a secluded area near a base in the town used by US military forces. The incident follows a series of similar attacks across the country which have been blamed on the Taleban. "We do not know the target of the attack, but we can say it was a suicide raid and there were no other casualties apart from the suicide car bomber," the Governor of Farah, Izatullah Wasifiold, told the Reuters news agency.
Around 900 people have been killed in the Afghan insurgency since the beginning of the year, with half of that total dying in May. Nato officials say that US-led air strikes have inflicted heavy casualties on Taleban insurgents in the south of Afghanistan throughout May.

Taliban fighters killed at least a dozen Afghan police and abducted up to 40 in two separate attacks in southern Afghanistan, while US-led forces launched an offensive in a nearby province, officials said today.
In the southern province of Zabul, a senior police official, Mohammad Rasoul, was killed and four other people, including two senior provincial officials, were wounded after the Taliban hit their car with a rocket yesterday. ''They were part of a reinforcement sent to help a group of highway police who had come under Taliban attack on a road of Zabul,'' said Yousuf Stanizai, the Interior Ministry spokesman.
An official in Zabul, who declined to be identified, said more than 10 policemen were killed in the Taliban assault.
The raid in Zabul came hours after the Taliban attacked a police base in Chora district of neighbouring Uruzgan province and abducted up to 40 policemen, an official in Kabul said on condition of anonymity. A Reuters reporter received a phone call from an unknown person who described himself as Mullah Ahmad, a Taliban commander, and said the militants had taken the police hostage and the Taliban's leadership would decide their fate.
He said militants had killed 12 police in the attack before kidnapping the others.
Separately, coalition and Afghan troops today scoured villages for Taliban insurgents in several areas of Ghazni province, said Sher Alam Ibrahimi, the region's governor. The operation was launched following a series of Taliban attacks in the province recently and amid reports the militants had regrouped there, Ibrahimi said. Coalition forces captured six suspected Taliban fighters, but there were no reports of fighting, he added. A coalition spokesman could not be contacted for comment.

It may be a cross-cultural thing. If the captors were local tribesmen, ransom would be in order. Trouble is, these 'Taliban' are heavily influenced by Arabs.
Islamic militias and secular warlords resumed fighting for control of the Somali capital on Wednesday, killing at least 13 people and wounding 11 after a five-day lull, witnesses and medical workers said.

The radical fighters also seized at least five prized trucks mounted with heavy weapons from their rivals.
Dr. Sheikhdon Salad Elmi, director of Medina Hospital, said at least three bodies were taken to his hospital and two others were at the Keysaney Hospital. Ali told The Associated Press that at least eight other bodies, mostly civilians, could been seen in the battle zone.
Fighting stopped later Wednesday as both sides strengthened their positions, enabling hundreds of people to flee their homes.
A warlord controlling Somalia's southern Middle Shabelle region, Mohamed Dheere, also sent trucks mounted with heavy weapons and armed militiamen to back up forces battling the Islamic fundamentalists, Radio Banadir reported.

Sources say heavily armed militia with 15 battle wagons are now in El-Irfid in an attempt to launch an attack on Islamic militiamen who have just taken position from Darmolei area alongside the road and some miles away from El-Irfid village. The people in the area fear that fighting might happen since both sides regroup.

Battle Wagons: Probably the Toyota Land Cruiser of FJ-60 and FJ-62 variety. Love the LC (goes anywhere, run fo'ever w/ little maint.), but the FJ-60,62 in the V6 configuration is underpowered for such a heavy vehicle. The new 3.4 V6 would do the job though. And the new V8 is wonderful.
Now the FJ-55 Iron Pig really looks like a battle wagon. And the FJ-40,45 has the removable hard top for all kinds of options. Apparently, the latest in luxury, the 100 series, is being outfitted with combat accessories as well. And then there is the new, but terrible expensive for a Somali warlord, MegaCruiser. Or maybe some real military left a 70 behind years ago.
I'm still having trouble finding the gun mounts for my Tundra and 4Runner here in the States though. I'm thinking a TOW launcher would look good on top of the 4Runner. (More Toyota .mil vehicles)

The militants, all citizens of Mauritania, were allegedly among the organisers of terrorist attacks against Mauritanian military bases in the southern part of the country and of the 1998 attack on the US embassy in Nairobi.
Mauritanian authorities have reportedly arrested 21 alleged members of the Algerian terrorist group since the beginning of April this year.

Egyptian security forces yesterday arrested two men suspected of involvement in a string of deadly bombings in the Sinai Peninsula over the past two years, security sources told AFP. Yussef Ali Mohammed Hamad and Ali Mohammed Hadi Salem, whose names appear on a wanted list issued by Egyptian police, were arrested in northern Sinai, one of the sources said. "The two were carrying weapons and hand-held explosives," the source said, without reporting a clash. Twenty people were killed, including several foreigners, on April 24, when three suicide bombings ripped through the popular Red Sea resort of Dahab during a peak holiday season.

Police in Chechnya pursued a group of fighters into neighboring Ingushetia on Wednesday, cornering them at a home and sparking a gun battle that killed three fighters and one police officer, officials said. Ingush Interior Minister Beslan Khamkhoev said in televised comments that the fighters had fled from the southwestern Chechen district of Achkhoi-Martan after a battle with Chechen police. They moved into Ingushetia, pursued by Chechen forces, and holed up in a house basement in the village of Nesterovskaya, he said.
Three of the fighters were killed during the gun battle at the house, said Roman Shchekotin, spokesman for the Interior Ministry's southern district, along with one Chechen police officer. Four other police were wounded. Khamkhoev said three police officers were wounded during the pursuit into Ingushetia and one fighter was killed. The battle ended when militants blew themselves up in the basement, news reports said.

Five armed insurgents, one police officer and a bystander were killed on Wednesday in separate clashes near Russia's turbulent Chechnya region, local media reported.
The bodies of three rebels were recovered from a house in the Ingushetia region, where police had trapped them after pursuing them from neighboring Chechnya, Itar-Tass news agency reported. It said one police officer was killed.
Two insurgents were killed in a gunfight with police in the nearby region of Dagestan, which also borders Chechnya, Interfax news agency reported. A bystander was hurt in the shooting and later died in hospital, the agency said.
Analysts say the insurgency is driven by militant Islamist ideas and resentment at police harassment. In some areas the fighting is also linked to organized crime.

Chechnya's prime minister said Wednesday the militant gang killed in the neighboring republic of Ingushetia had returned from Turkey.
Ramzan Kadyrov said gangs had become proactive in other North Caucasus regions "as they have nowhere to hide in Chechnya."
Three militants, including a warlord by the name of Khaikhoroyev, were killed and one hostage was freed in an operation in Ingushetia Wednesday.
One policeman was killed and three wounded after law enforcers surrounded a house in which militants had taken a man hostage. The militants later blew up the basement in which they were holed up.

Spain's High Court acquitted on Thursday a man accused of conspiring to help commit the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, court papers said.
Judicial sources said the man, known as Abu Dahdah, would serve 12 years in jail for leading a terrorist group rather than the full 27 years to which he had been sentenced.
Abu Dahdah, whose full name is Imad Eddin Barakat Yarkas, was accused of being an al Qaeda member.
"We must absolve, and we do absolve, Imad Eddin Barakat Yarkas of the crime of conspiracy to commit terrorist murder for which he was accused," the court document said.
It added that other convictions of Abu Dahdah still stood.

Anti-terror police in Turkey are reported to have foiled a plot to kill Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Turkish newspapers says nine people, including three soldiers, have been detained in the capital, Ankara. Police are said to have found grenades, explosives, a timer, and a sketch showing Mr Erdogan's route home.
There has been no official comment. Mr Erdogan, whose party has Islamic roots, last month criticised the army's chief for encouraging popular protests. He attacked General Hilmi Ozkok for supporting demonstrations against Islamist militancy after a judge was murdered by a suspected Islamist gunman. The army sees itself as the guardian of secularism in predominantly Muslim Turkey.
The Hurriyet and Sabah newspapers suggested Cuneyd Zapsu, one of Mr Erdogan's advisers, was also the target of a likely attack. There has been no confirmation from the police, but the semi-official Anatolia news agency said the suspects were "allegedly planning an attack against a politician".

The AK's major opposition, the CHP, is accusing Erdogan of "interfering with the judicial process" (Article 288 of the new Turkish penal code--one that has been very popular lately). How soon will it be before Erdogan is formally charged?

Dozens of youths stoned a police station early Wednesday in a second night of trouble in a rough Paris suburb, as authorities arrested a youth whose injury along with the death of two friends sparked last year's wave of rioting. Street violence opposing local gangs and police continued late Tuesday and early Wednesday in both towns, as youths attacked a police station, set ablaze a dozen cars and rained stones down on public buildings.
Four police officers were lightly wounded while protecting the Montfermeil police station from stoning by a gang of around 30 youths. Four other officers, visibly rattled, managed to get out of their car, in front of the Bosquets public housing estate on the border of the two towns, after youths set it on fire, AFP witnessed. A helicopter with a spotlight canvassed the neighbourhood throughout the night, on the alert for new flare-ups. Five youths were arrested among them Muhittin Altun, who narrowly escaped electrocution in October after hiding from the police in a power sub-station. Altun, released Wednesday morning with a court summons, was detained in Clichy-sous-Bois on charges of pitching rocks at a police car. His lawyer denied the charge.
The Montfermeil area has been tense since the centre-right mayor passed a tough anti-crime decree later blocked by the courts forbidding young people from gathering in the streets. On Monday, the Montfermeil town hall and the mayor's home were attacked by gangs of masked youths wielding sticks and baseball bats. A 250-man police contingent was sent to quell the unrest, which left seven officers lightly injured.
France's tough interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, pledged late Tuesday he would clamp down on any further violence. "I won't let chaos be stirred up anywhere in France," he said. Speaking to a group of policemen, he described Monday's violence in Montfermeil as a well-orchestrated strike. "More than 100 troublemakers set upon you, masked and carrying weapons," he said. "It's impossible to deny the evidence: this was premeditated."
Left-wing municipal authorities in Montfermeil said Monday's incidents were sparked by the "heavy-handed" arrest of a woman from the Bosquets estate whose son was wanted in connection with a robbery. But Sarkozy brushed aside the criticism saying said it showed only that "by battling delinquency, we have upset some of the delinquents." Yes, they are armed : non-lethal weapons including "flashballs" impact stun devices and CS grenade launchers, pepper spray (I think we still prefer teargas), tonfas, saps, ye olde 12 gauges pump shotgun, some carbines like the Ruger mini-14, various smgs, notably the Beretta m12, hk mp5, various handguns,... some of them coppers are actually well-known for taking names and kicking *ss (Bac anti-gangs brigades, CRS and Gendarmes mobiles anti-riot units, various swat type units like the regional GIPN), they've got recognized high quality anti-terrorist units (GIGN, EPIGN, RAID),... but they can't fight back, both paramiltary police and civilian police.
I mean, they can defend themselves, bash in a few heads, etc, etc... but they are not to antagonize when confronted.
You've got to understand that the main motto of the "tough on crime" Sarko during the ramadan riots was "no casualty among the rioters". So, police had to leave them burn cars, not to act out too harshly, and avoid clashes.
So, there were real ambushes of police units, trapped and surrounded, with the reinforcement meant to bail them out trapped by the responding reinformcement of Youths (thanks, mighty cellphone, truly the best weapon of french Youths, able to summit a posse in no time), there were actual reports of riot police being shot at and not even responding or chasing the culprit...
The french police during the riots was outstanding by its self-control and endurance.
Simply, they were not meant to enforce the law and order, as there is NO political will. And the riots were only an exacerbated example of that long-running "response" of french authorities, which prefer to let the underground economy flourish, so peace can prevail.
One reason Sarko is HATED in the 'hoods, beside his phony "tough on crime" media image (with the help of the leftists & msm, but I repeat myself, who diabolize him, as he's actually some kind of real conservative in the french political scenery), and his supposed jewishness (remember the "Sarko dirty jew" shouts?), is that he established anti-organized crime regional units which are actual efficient at rooting out that underground economy based on cannabis traffic from Morocco (80% of all european production).

The Image of a French Police Officer with a MP5 or Beretta M12 is pretty vivid for me. These were cops on the street carrying sub guns. To bad that they can't cut lose. It would only take a few times and this "problem" would be solved.

The French need to break some heads. This won't stop until the penalty for it is greater than the reward ("self-esteem", feeling of power). I mean BREAK HEADS, and hands, and feet, and knees, and arms, literally. Don't shoot the little bas####s, but break their bones. Let them remember the rest of their lives what happens when you decide you're bigger than the rest of the world. Unfortunately, it takes guts and the willingness to send a few of the ringleaders to the mortuary to make it work, something I don't think the French are capable of at the moment. If this continues, however, they may actually develop a spine - or die trying.

Muhammad, 45, stood with his head bowed as the sentence was announced. Some in the audience applauded.
Muhammad was convicted Tuesday of six counts of murder for six of the 10 deadly sniper attacks that terrorized the Washington area in October 2002. This time, Muhammad acted as his own attorney at trial, and his young accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, took the stand for the first time to testify against him. Malvo told jurors how the older man, his one-time mentor, trained him to shoot and drew him into a sinister plan to kill people, including children, indiscriminately.
Jurors deliberated less than five hours before finding Muhammad guilty.
Malvo, sentenced to life in prison in Virginia, had agreed to plead guilty in the Maryland killings. He was not promised leniency but told jurors he wanted to face the man who he said trained him to be a killer. He called Muhammad a coward and, at one point, glared at him, saying: You took me into your house and you made me a monster.
Muhammad called him son and questioned Malvos credibility, saying the 21-year-old had problems with exaggeration and memory. He also claimed he was framed by investigators who planted and fabricated evidence and said he was the victim of a broad law enforcement conspiracy.
Muhammad could be returned to Virginias death row as early as Thursday afternoon, according to Darren Popkin, Montgomery County chief deputy sheriff. Malvo likely will remain in Maryland until he formally enters a plea in October. Other states still have outstanding charges against Muhammad from earlier shootings, including Louisiana and Alabama. It will be up to Virginia whether to send him away again for further prosecution.

I don't see how this is much insurance. It seems to me that if the death sentence is overturned in VA, there would have to be a new sentencing. If the guilty verdict in VA was overturned, it would have to be based on a flaw in the prosecution's case or in some aspect of the trial. If it was the former, the Md verdict would be in jeopardy.

Federal prosecutors in Sacramento announced Wednesday that they had obtained a guilty plea from a Pakistani-American ice cream truck driver who was accused of lying to the authorities during a terrorism investigation.

Mr. Hayat had told officials during a stopover in Washington that he and his family were carrying less than $10,000, while prosecutors said the amount was more than $28,000.
Mr. Hayat, 48, had been expected to face trial next week on more serious charges of lying to federal investigators in relation to his son, Hamid, who was convicted on April 25 of lying to federal agents and providing material support to terrorists by attending a training camp of Al Qaeda in 2003. A separate jury had deadlocked on charges against the elder Mr. Hayat on the same day, but prosecutors had sought to retry him.
The plea puts at least a temporary end to an inquiry that disrupted the rural town of Lodi, where the Hayats live in a close-knit Muslim community. It also brings to a close a federal prosecution that raised questions about government interrogation techniques. Both Hayats had submitted confessions to investigators despite limited English, an element that some legal experts say could open their convictions to appeal.
In a statement on Wednesday, Mr. Scott, the prosecutor, seemed to strike a victorious note. "After 9/11, the U.S. Justice Department's top priority is to detect, disrupt, and deter future acts of terrorism," he said. "This mission was accomplished."
In exchange for his plea, federal officials said they would dismiss all previous charges and recommend that Umer Hayat receive a sentence of three years supervised release. Since his arrest in 2005, Mr. Hayat has served 330 days in jail and 30 days of home confinement, prosecutors said. Sentencing is Aug. 18.

Police in India say they have killed three suspected militants who were planning an attack on the headquarters of a Hindu right-wing organisation.
Officials said the militants were targeting the headquarters of the Rashtriya Shyamsevak Sangh (RSS) in western Nagpur city early on Thursday. Police said the attackers belonged to an unspecified Islamic group.
The RSS is the ideological fountainhead of various Hindu groups including the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party. Police officials told the BBC that the police intercepted the militants, who were armed with hand grenades and assault rifles, near the RSS headquarters in Maharashtra state at 0400 on Thursday. Two policemen were also injured in the five-minute-long gun battle.
Officials said the men, who were dressed in police uniform, came in a car and fired upon the policemen who stopped them for questioning outside the organisation's headquarters. Nagpur police chief SDS Yadav said that security was tight at the RSS headquarters as it had always been a potential target for militants. Security at all RSS offices in the country has been tightened after the incident, the BBC's Zubair Ahmed reports from Mumbai.
"We will be cautious. We have asked RSS offices all over the country to be on guard," RSS spokesman Ram Madhav said. The 81-year-old RSS is India's oldest Hindu nationalist organisation with an estimated 1.3 million members. The organisation came into existence in 1925 in Nagpur with an avowed objective to make India a Hindu nation. Some RSS members take part in military drills and exercises - a guiding principle of the organisation is that India should be Hinduised and militarised.
Critics of the organisation say that its hardline ideology is based on intolerance towards religious minorities. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by a militant Hindu who had once been an RSS member.

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has sentenced an Islamist militant to death for an attack on a gathering of Shi'ite Muslims seven years ago that killed 16 people, a lawyer said today.
The convict, Qari Omar Hayat, belonged to the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, one of the most feared militant groups blamed for most attacks on minority Shi'ite Muslims in Pakistan.
Hayat and three other militants were convicted yesterday for firing on a crowd of Shi'ite Muslims near the town of Muzaffargarh in central Punjab province in 1999, said state prosecutor Malik Najaf Ali Mahe.
''He was one of the attackers who fired at the gathering with a Kalashnikov rifle. The three other attackers have already been killed in police encounters,'' Mahe told Reuters.
Hayat had the right to appeal.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Militants set off a roadside bomb and fired rockets and mortars at security posts in separate attacks on Wednesday in a tribal region, leaving two soldiers wounded, an official said. The soldiers were in a pickup truck travelling along a road in Shakai, a mountain valley in South Waziristan tribal region, when the bomb exploded nearby and wounded them, a government official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make media comments. The victims were moved to a military hospital in Wana, South Waziristan's main town, he said. There was no word on how seriously they were hurt.
Hours before the bombing, militants targeted several security posts with around 45 rockets, mortars and assault rifles at various locations in Shakai, a former militant stronghold, he said. No one was hurt in the spate of small-scale attacks that began after midnight on Tuesday and continued through the early hours of Wednesday, he said. Troops retaliated, firing mortars and other heavy weapons, but it was not known whether there were any casualties among the assailants. Authorities said they had launched a search operation in the Shakai region.

A Saudi member of al Qaeda, captured in northern Iraq, was handed over to the U.S Army, according to a minister in the Kurdistan regional government.
Said Saad Said al Qarni, also known as Abu Qatiba, a former student of Imam Mohammed bin Saud in Riyadh, was detained by the Kurdish police last summer in Mosul , after failing to blow up the Kurdish Democratic Party headquarters in the city.
Abdul Karim Sinjari, minister of state for the interior in the regional government, told Asharq al Awsat that the 24-years journey began in Jeddah where he met a man known as Abu Abada, before boarding a flight together to Damascus, with $2000 in his possession.
In Syria, al Qarni stayed at a number of safe houses before illegally crossing the border into Iraq and traveling to al Qaim. According to the investigation, al Qarni met an Iraqi called Abu Mohammed and stayed at his home with four other terrorists, including a Saudi called Abu Azzam.
In Falluja, the former student asked to take part in a suicide attack against the coalition forces. However, he was chosen to carry out an attack in Iraqi Kurdistan and entered northern Iraq with forged documents. He was later arrested in Mosul.
The U.S. military investigation of how Marine commanders handled the reporting of events last November in the Iraqi town of Haditha, where troops allegedly killed 24 Iraqi civilians, will conclude that some officers gave false information to their superiors, who then failed to adequately scrutinize reports that should have caught their attention, an Army official said yesterday.
The three-month probe, led by Army Maj. Gen. Eldon Bargewell, is also expected to call for changes in how U.S. troops are trained for duty in Iraq, the official said.

Foreign terrorists, led by fighters from Saudi Arabia, are behind an upsurge in attacks against British troops in Basra, military sources said yesterday. The Saudi influence on terrorism in Shia-dominated Basra has not been previously reported but has caused concern among military commanders because of their training, technology and finance.
Although the majority of Saudi Arabians are Sunni, the minority Shia have taken part in terrorist attacks.
Des Browne, the Defence Secretary, admitted that a recent surge in violence was a cause of "major concern". Dozens of soldiers have been targeted by advanced "improvised explosive devices" (IED) that the Army has been unable to disable or jam.
Morale is also being affected by the continual danger, with older soldiers saying the apprehension is similar to that experienced on the streets of Northern Ireland in the 70s and early 80s. "People are dying and morale is being affected by it," said an officer operating in Iraq. "The perception is that attacks are becoming more lethal and better targeted and the delivery process is more effective. There is a definite sense that we are still making progress but because there is no real defence against IEDs people are feeling a bit glummer."

Iraqi and coalition forces captured eight terrorist leaders in recent operations in Baghdad neighborhoods. Also, the Iraqi-led Combined Review and Release Board released more than 200 detainees. Yesterday, Iraqi forces raided two targets in the Karada area of Baghdad and detained seven individuals responsible for homemade bomb attacks against Iraqi security forces.
The first target was a dormitory on Baghdad Technical University's campus where two student cells, operating out of dormitory rooms, built bombs and later initiated attacks against Iraqi army and police forces. Four students were detained during this operation. At the second target, an apartment building near the campus, Iraqi forces detained three cell leaders responsible for emplacing bombs made by their student cells. All three cell leaders are believed to be Palestinians, and they were financed by a local business. This cell is responsible for at least two attacks against Iraqi security and police forces in the Karada area. The first attack, in December 2005, resulted in no casualties. The second attack, in January of this year, killed several Iraqi police officers riding in a vehicle.
A SUICIDE bomber in a car killed at least 12 people in the Iraqi town of Hilla, police sources said. They said 36 people were wounded in the attack near a car dealership in Hilla, 100km south of Baghdad.
The mainly Shiite town has suffered some of the biggest bombings in the Sunni guerrilla campaign to topple the Shiite-led government.
Hours later a car bomb killed at least five people in the northern Baghdad district of Husaniya, police said.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Wednesday declared a month-long state of emergency in Basra after sectarian tension increased in Iraq's second-largest city. In a speech broadcast by Iraqi television al Iraqiya, al-Maliki said the cabinet would use an "iron fist" against "criminal gangs" he accused of holding the city's oil exports to ransom. During his visit to Basra on Wednesday, al-Maliki also denounced a wave of killings and kidnappings that Sunni religious leaders have blamed on Shiite death squads.
Basra has registered growing tensions among Shiite groups vying for political power and control over the area's vast oil wealth.
A Shiite faction has moreover threatened to sabotage oil exports through Basra to exercise pressure on the Iraqi government.
Addressing some 700 tribal sheiks, religious leaders, officials, army officers and other residents in Basra on Wednesday, the premier also said the government will "ask all security departments to draw up an effective and quick plan to achieve security."
Al-Maliki's comments came as a new Pentagon report indicated that Sunni insurgent strength should remain steady this year, though it warned about increasing threats from al-Qaeda in Iraq.

At least 40 corpses, shot in the head and showing signs of torture, have been found in different locations around Iraq, an interior ministry official said on Wednesday. The largest cache of 16 bodies turned up in Baladiyat in the eastern outskirts of Baghdad, while five were found in Husseiniya, northeast of the capital where a car bomb killed 22 people on Tuesday. Another four were found in Baghdad's impoverished Shiite district of Sadr City, three decapitated bodies were discovered in Muqdadiya, northeast of the capital and another 12 around Baghdad. All bodies had their hands tied and showed signs of torture, the official said.
The sudden flood of corpses comes after a comparative hiatus in night-time killings believed to be carried out by armed gangs on sectarian grounds following the destruction of a Shiite shrine in February. Monday and Tuesday saw an explosion of violence and bombings around the country, mostly focused on Baghdad, that claimed the lives of over 100 people. In other violence Wednesday, a mortar attack in the southern outskirts of Baghdad killed nine people and wounded 17 on Wednesday, police sources said. They said four mortar bombs landed south of Baghdad's Dora district. No other details were immediately available.

A PALESTINIAN security officer was killed and seven were wounded in clashes between rival Fatah and Hamas factions in Gaza today, underscoring growing tensions in the impoverished coastal strip.
Earlier, thousands of Palestinian security men fired automatic rifles and vandalised the parliament in Gaza in one of the biggest protests over unpaid wages since the Hamas government took office in March.
Medics and a security official said Khader Afana, a Fatah member of the preventative security force, was killed by unknown gunmen in Gaza City. No one claimed responsibility for the shooting.
In further violence, three more security officers were wounded as their vehicle was attacked in a village east of the town of Khan Younis, the security official said, accusing Hamas of the ambush.
Hamas said the Fatah fighters fired at one of its senior commanders, which prompted them to return fire.
A Hamas gunman was slightly hurt in the exchange.
The clashes have disrupted a tenuous peace that had been in place since President Mahmoud Abbas, Fatah's leader, and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh's Hamas-led government began talks last week to try to end violence in Gaza.
Witnesses and medics said a further three Fatah members were slightly wounded in a gunbattle between Fatah and Hamas gunmen in Khan Younis early today.
The government's inability to pay wages and a power struggle with Mr Abbas over control of the security forces have sparked fears tensions could spiral out of control. Clashes last month between Fatah and Hamas in Gaza killed 10 people.
Protesters in Gaza criticised a plan by Mr Haniyeh, who is also a senior leader of the Hamas Islamic militant group, to make only partial payments to employees of the Palestinian Authority in the next few days.
"We want to know when this tragedy will stop," one security official shouted through a loudspeaker outside the parliament building in central Gaza City.
The protest occurred while lawmakers were holding a routine session.
No one was hurt, but witnesses said demonstrators smashed windows and a lawmaker added they damaged doors, air-conditioners and electronic equipment.
Most of the demonstrators were from forces loyal to Mr Abbas's Fatah movement.
The new government has been unable to pay salaries for three months to 165,000 government workers after the United States and other western countries imposed sanctions over Hamas's refusal to recognise Israel, disarm and accept interim peace accords.
The embargo has deepened a humanitarian crisis in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.
Mr Haniyeh pledged on Tuesday to pay a full month's wages in a few days to 40,000 workers whose monthly salaries are less than 1500 shekels ($440).
He also promised to pay each of the other 125,000 government workers, who earn higher salaries, an advance of 1500 shekels ($440).
The finance minister later said it was unclear when workers who earn more would get their money.
Hamas formed a government in March after beating Fatah in parliamentary elections in January. Mr Abbas, a moderate, was elected separately in early 2005 in a ballot Hamas did not contest.
The latest unrest comes a day after a senior UN official said international proposals to pay only some Palestinian workers, mainly in the health sector, could fuel tensions unless major donors agreed to leave the door open to expand the mechanism later to pay security forces and others. Around 70,000 security men are on the government payroll.

A group of Palestinian children were sent towards the Gaza Strip border fence holding toy guns on Thursday in order to test the vigilance of the soldiers on duty.
From a distance, troops noticed four apparently armed Palestinians approaching the border north of the Kissufim crossing.
When the four were some 400 meters from the fence, the soldiers realized that they were children, who looked to be about 13 years of age, and that their guns were toys.
The Gaza security fence has become the scene of almost daily incidences of would-be infiltrations from the Gaza Strip, attempted terror attacks, and occasionally exchanges of fire. Earlier Thursday, IDF forces arrested two unarmed Palestinians who breached the fence in order to cross into Israel.
And only Monday, a Palestinian was shot and killed by IDF soldiers after they identified three men near the fence and fired at them, suspecting they intended to carry out an attack.

The Israelis should open a small, well-covered gap in the fence for the kids to come through. Then if the kids ever do come through, catch them.
Once you have them, it's 'Alice in Wonderland' time for them. Take 48-72 hours and reprogram their asses, then turn them loose with a boring and dull cover story.
Since the Israelis are so squeamish about playing dirty, reprogram the kids to be "wet blankets", to convince their friends that attacking Israelis isn't worth it, isn't fun, and doesn't work. Preparation:
1. Turn on stove and adjust to somewhere between medium and high heat.
2. Poor vegatable oil in the pan to cover bottom and then some.
3. Place pan on stove and let heat for 1 minute.
4. In the mean time, put a stick of butter in another pan and start it melting at medium heat.
5. Put three popcorn kernels in the pan.
6. When one or two of them pop, cover the bottom of the pan with popcorn and then some, but not a whole lot. You should not be able to see the bottom of the pan.
7. Place the top on the pan ajar. The popcorn should start popping in a minute or so.
8. Continuously shake the pan across the burner until popping reaches a crescendo.
9. Move to a unheated burner and back to the heated burner once or twice (this is an art).
10. Move to an unheated burner when the popcorn reaches the lid and wait while it finishes popping.
11. Pour popcorn in a large bowl, pour on butter, and salt to taste. The butter and salt can be distributed by pouring the popcorn back and fourth between the bowl(s) and pan. If some fall on the floor, I eat them anyway.

Philippine group of radical Muslim converts with suspected links to foreign and local militant groups still poses a serious threat despite the arrest of its two top leaders, a senior counter-terrorism official said.
Ricardo Blancaflor of the Philippine counter-terrorism task force said yesterday that the Rajah Solaiman Movement continued to plot attacks in Manila despite the arrest of its leader, Hilarion del Rosario Santos, and his number two in 2005.
The threat has not diminished, Blancaflor told reporters after the US embassy awarded $500,000 to two Filipinos who tipped police off about the whereabouts of Santos, alias Ahmed Islam. The informants identities were not revealed.
They deserve the reward, US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenny told reporters, saying Washingtons programme to pay tipsters to track down and arrests militants across the globe was an effective weapon against terrorism.
There are estimated to be more than 100,000 converts to Islam in the Philippines, Asias largest Catholic country, and analysts have said the emergence of a militant movement among them could increase bombings in northern Philippines.

I good indicator of how average politicians are is the lack of reaction against the deadly Islam flu. This flu passes from mislead simpleton to mislead simpleton. The police success came after a one-year operation. Six Malaysians, three Indonesians and two Filipinos have been arrested in Sandakan, Tawau and Klang. The 11 members of the group, based in Sabah, have been smuggling firearms and ammunition in the region. "With the arrests, the police have crushed the underground network of the militant group Darul Islam Sabah which collaborated with Indonesian militants," said Bakri.
All 11 are being held under the Internal Security Act.
Malaysian authorities said one of the 12 terror suspects arrested in Sabah had trained terrorists in the southern Philippines, where Filipino security forces are battling members of the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group.
The suspects, believed to have links to the Indonesian terrorist group Darul Islam, have been detained and authorities were investigating their links with the Abu Sayyaf group operating in the southern Philippines.
Philippine troops were pursuing the Abu Sayyaf, blamed for two cross-border kidnappings in Sabah in 2000 and the spate of deadly bomb attacks in the southern Philippines, since 1994.
The Jihad Islamic extremist group has issued a number of leaflets calling on the Muslims of Muttur Town to vacate their homes immediately, local sources said. In the leaflet Jihad had said that they were planning to carry out a number of attacks on innocent Tamil civilians and that they did not want any Muslims to be caught up in any retaliatory attacks.
However, a vast number of peace loving Muslims have staid put and prevented the planned attack by Jihad, sources added.
The new attacks by Jihad are said to be masterminded by Al-Qaeda leaders in Pakistan and delivered to Jihad via EPDP armed gang leader Douglas Devananda.
Sources said that the Sri Lanka Muslim Council (SLMC) has done the usual by twisting and turning, before finally putting the blame on the LTTE.

Iran, apparently anticipating an American invasion, has quietly been restructuring its military and testing a new military doctrine that calls for a decentralized, Iraqi-style guerrilla campaign against an invading force.
Iran's military planners are acutely aware that a military confrontation with technologically more advanced U.S. armed forces would be rapid and multifronted, unlike the static and slow-paced 1980-88 war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq.
Therefore, a series of war games have been carried out since late last year to test the army's readiness.
In December, more than 15,000 members of the regular armed forces participated in an exercise in northwestern Iran's strategically sensitive Azerbaijan border provinces that focused on irregular warfare carried out by highly mobile army units, according to the official MENA news agency.

Is'nt this to our advantage. They would have to send people to all parts of thier country. The longer they stay there, the sooner they think like the people of that area, which is'nt always good for the mullahs. And since we know we are not going to attack, but they don't, they will be out there a while.

There is no certainty that any air campaign only, however prolonged and intensive, will result in either "regime change" via domestic uprising, or in inducing Moud-Mullahs to voluntarily give up dev nuke weapons. Dont blow him off he is absolutely correct. Iran has spent 30years of so preparing their terrorist proxy groups and connections the world over while we have been naval gazing finding every possible evil the US ever did to deserve self hatred.
The only question knowing this horrific response will happen thou is will it be more or will it be less worse than the response in the future when Iran has nukes + all these current abilities?.

Like what? A few suicide bombs go off in my back yard? It's worth it. I won't be happy about it, but I'll die so that many more can live without fear. They blow all the oil wells? We'll live. That might just be what it will take to get people to stop whining and get real about being more energy efficient anyway. Besides, what would the worldwide manifestation be if they weren't attacked?

Turkey Fossil states the obvious, but for what reasons? (1) to hedge its bets should the US not take military action, (2) to keep the oil $$.$ gravy train rollin, (3) to supposedly postpone the inevitible Shia-Sunni regional war.
The Sauds are invested in the status quo, but one way or another, big change is afoot.

Yeah, he'd probably like that war pushed back until he was a fossil. Or at least dead. He, like many, probably doesn't give a $hit what happens after he's dead.
Kind of makes you wonder how much of Iran's moves are serious, and how much of them are designed to push up oil prices, both to the detriment of the US and to the benefit of his own country's coffers. Maybe they'll back off just enough to keep the tension going but not get smacked.

If you were a Saudi royal, you'd want status quo too. Iran isn't building bombs to attack Saudi Arabia, but Iran may attack Saudi Arabia to damage the U.S. if the U.S. attacks Iran. As for spikes in oil prices, the Saudis don't want to see the U.S. move toward energy independence and they certainly don't want instability that causes the U.S. to start seizing control of supply.
What they cannot say is that a military and mullah decapitation of Iran by the U.S. may be their best bet for long-term stability. They can think it, but they dare not say it.
