Ohfergawdsake watch: Mother ordered to stop breastfeeding boy, eight
A woman has been warned by a court in Urbana, Illinois, to stop breastfeeding her eight-year-old son after a national television chatshow showed a video of him suckling at their home. Lynn Stuckey, 34, from Urbana, appeared on the show last month to discuss her practice.
Not only is she stoopid enough to keep suckling her child for eight years, she's stoopid enough to do it on terriblevision...
She said: "I think people need to see me and my child and realise that this is a perfectly normal practice. We are your standard middle-class American family, and we're not doing anything wrong."
"Perfectly normal" implies lotsa people do it. I'll keep an eye out, but I've missed it so far...
The programme was seen by officials in her state and a case was brought against her for putting her son at risk of emotional harm by her behaviour. The prosecutor, John Piland, argued that Ms Stuckey was exposing the boy to ridicule by allowing the video to be shown.
Well, he might have a point there...
In court this week Judge Ann Einhorn told Ms Stuckey to stop the practice and set September 10 as the date for a hearing to decide what action should be taken.
On the other hand, I don't know what law she's breaking, if any. I'd say people have a right to be stoopid in their own homes...
Ms Stuckey, who was not available for comment yesterday, has claimed that she lets her son breastfeed about every 10 days. She insists that the practice is natural but does not know if she still produces milk.
Perhaps she could ask him?

Axis of Evil
Bush administration ratchets up rhetoric
President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney call Saddam Hussein the "enemy." Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld compares him to Adolf Hitler.
An exaggeration. Papa Doc with a bit more weaponry, perhaps...
Bush's national security adviser says the Iraqi president is an "evil man" who will unleash havoc on the world unless the United States stops him. In trying persuade the public, U.S. allies and, perhaps, Saddam himself that he is fair game, the Bush administration is ratcheting up its rhetoric. It's a standard entry in the presidential playbook, some say.
Meaning it's just blow...
The run-up to war always involves planting in people's minds "that this must be done because this person represents evil in the world," says Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University. "Americans know instinctively that Saddam Hussein is an evil man and we would be better off if he were elsewhere, 6 feet under somewhere or locked up in a cell."
He's actually one of a small handful that are truly evil. Bob in Zimbabwe is in the same class, but not many others.
But moving people toward "pre-emptive violence," as Jillson calls it, is hard when they have not been attacked. "In other words, a Pearl Harbor will do it."
And there's the problem. If the U.S. had attacked in, say, December, the public would have supported it almost without questioning. But now that almost a year's gone by, one has to accept the "global policeman" idea to actually put legitimacy to the idea of going in and beating him up. Any links to al-Qaeda are tenuous at best — probably of the "g'morning, neighbor" variety, and the public isn't worried about Iraqi missiles raining down on Cleveland or Boulder. There may not be an overt Gulf War II, though I suspect there will be. I think most of this is going to be done behind the scenes. If it's done right, 2003 will be Sammy's last year on earth and it won't be American divisions who bring him to the boneyard.

Reformist accuses US of wanting to impose change
The head of a recently banned Iranian opposition group accused the United States of wanting to impose change on Iran, in remarks published Thursday.
No! Not that! Never...!
"The United States are seeking change. It is likely they will close the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf to harm Iran and block its oil exports, because cutting oil revenue will aggravate the situation," Ebrahim Yazdi, 70, told a meeting of students. "We must find a solution from inside the system, while the enemies want solutions from the outside of the system." Yazdi heads the reformist Iran Freedom Movement (IFM).
Sounds like he's being piously patriotic so he doesn't get sent to jail with the current lot of jugged reformers...

#1  They are accusing us of plotting to close the Straits of Hormuz? Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?

Janati slams idea of settling differences with USA
A hardline Iranian conservative figure slammed Friday any idea of resolving differences with Washington. "US policies of force and intimidation in the world are aimed at colonizing other countries", said Ayatollah Ahmad Janati, head of Iran's powerful Guardians Council, in a sermon at Tehran University. It was not in Iran's interest "to settle differences with the United States," he said, reminding the faithful to "be vigilant to confront conspiracies by domestic and foreign enemies."
A-yep. Y'gotta watch those conspiracies. They're everywhere y'look...
He cited the 1953 US-sponsored coup that ousted Iranian prime minister Mohammed Mossadegh and replaced him with the exiled shah, as an example of Washington's intentions.
That was, ummm... 49 years ago...
The Guardians Council, a 12-member body dominated by conservatives, screens laws to ensure they are in accordance with its interpretation of Islamic principles and the constitution.
They're the Guardians of Morals, divine-right theocrats ordained by Gawdalmighty to keep Iran on the Straight and Narrow™, Cotton Mather in a parallel universe, only with a turban. Without them, Iranian women would be running around in bikinis or less and all the cities in a Great and Pious Nation™ would be chock full of titty bars and NASCAR-themed beer joints. Men would forget their small arms training and spend their time on frivolous pursuits, like working for a living and chasing the bikini-clad babes. There would be Victoria's Secret catalogs under every mattress. There would be impious laughter and frivolty, even outright mirth. Men would be dancing with women, even touching them! The mosques would all close and deserving holy men would be starving in the streets...

U.S. seeks to ease airport hassles
Airline passengers soon may be able to board a plane without being asked whether they have kept a close watch on their bags. And starting right away, they can take drinks through security checkpoints. The Transportation Security Administration, created after Sept. 11 to oversee airport security, is seeking ways to make travel less onerous. Among the considerations is getting rid of the questions, says agency chief James Loy.
If I was Norm, and I'm not, I'd just contract the whole thing out to El Al. They can add more cosmetix than Michael Jackson and Liza Minelli wear combined, but the issue's still got to be security. That doesn't mean pre-flight biopsies for little old ladies. That would involve some sort of legislation blocking the flood of lawsuits that'll come if we ever do try to take a serious approach to the matter. There've already been a few suits by indignant Middle Easterners and South Asians when someone has tried to show some good sense...

India-Pakistan
13 dead, 3 arrested in Kashmir
Three Pakistan-based militants were arrested in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Thursday for allegedly plotting attacks in upcoming state elections, and 13 people were killed in new violence.
"No, no, can't have elections. They'll lend a veneer of legitimacy to Indian rule, after all. Besides, democracy's a Jewish plot. What we need is a khalifate..."
Five snuffies suspected guerrillas and six members of the security forces were killed in separate gunbattles, while militants killed two civilians in other shootouts. Jammu-Kashmir state police chief Ashok Suri said the three arrested men were Islamic guerrillas belonging to the Pakistan-based Al-Badr group. He said the group was planning attacks for state elections expected for September or October. They were arrested in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir. It was the first arrest of Pakistani militants in the state capital in years, since militants are often killed in gunbattles and are rarely captured.
Meaning these guys are more than just cannon fodder...
"There are more Pakistani militants operating in Srinagar with definite plans to disrupt elections," Ashok told a news conference.

And the Indian side...
Pakistan on Friday accused India of carrying out air raids on one of its military posts in Gultari sector, even as its troops launched unprovoked heavy artillery shelling on Indian positions across the Line of Control in Drass sector. "There are no casualties on our side," a defence ministry spokesman said, while dismissing the Pakistani allegation as 'baseless'.
So who was it that bombed them? And who do they have pinned down?
The Indian defence spokesman said that its armed forces had not crossed the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir nor had they attacked any military posts there. He said the allegations were apparently an effort to spread 'disinformation and malicious propaganda' to malign India internationally.
So it's all made up? But don't they have to produce some dead guys to show... Oh. Nover mind. Forget I said anything.

India attacks Azad Kashmir
Pakistan on Friday said India launched an aerial bombing raid on one of Pakistan army posts along the Line of Control (LoC). The Indian Air Force dropped bombs in Gul Tari sector, in the northern districts of the Line of Control after Indian army troops attacked the post overnight. This Indian attack is a clear rebuke and slap on the face of U.S. Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage who arrived in New Delhi to diffuse tensions created by Indian Army stalking at Pakistan's border since Dec 2001. However, the Indian planes did not violate Pakistani airspace, an army spokesman said.
Only their bombs?
Dozens of Indian troops were killed but Pakistan suffered no casualties, the military announced in a press statement.
That's a pretty unlikely-sounding press release...

Middle East
Paleogunnies iced trying to swarm Gaza town
Just before daybreak, three armed Palestinians dressed in Israeli army uniforms and armed with assault rifles and grenades tried to swarm infiltrate the Jewish settlement of Kfar Darom in central Gaza, the military said. Soldiers shot and killed one man at the settlement fence and wounded another. He fled into a building in a nearby Palestinian town, and was found dead there, the military said. Soldiers were searching for the third man, the area military commander said. In a phone call to The Associated Press, a caller claimed responsibility on behalf of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades.
"The penalty for failure is... Oh. They already are."
The violence overshadowed an agreement to turn security in Gaza over to Palestinians as a trial for easing harsh Israeli restrictions in the West Bank.
Yeah, yeah. We tried that before. Worked well, didn't it?

Hamas snuffy's house blown in Tulkarem...
In the West Bank town of Tulkarem, Israeli forces destroyed the house of Mohannad Shraim, a Hamas leader. The Israeli military said he was one of the planners of a suicide bombing in the coastal city of Netanya, which killed 29 people gathered for a holiday meal on March 27. Residents said soldiers blew up the four-story house where Shraim's brother and family also lived, making 11 people homeless. They said Shraim has been in Israeli custody since April.
The people this goober helped kill are dead. That's worse than being homeless...

Southeast Asia
Agus wants case thrown out...
Indonesian Islamic militant Agus Dwikarna asked a lower court on Friday to set aside his 17-year jail sentence for explosives possession, arguing that Philippines police had fabricated evidence.
They just picked him at random and framed him...
Reading a statement at the regional trial court, Dwikarna said: "I am not a terrorist. I know nothing about the Jemaah Islamiya or al-Qaeda and their activities."
"I was just standin' there with my teeth in mouth, doin' nothin', when..."
The Indonesian claimed Philippine authorities had set him up to be arrested for possession of C-4 plastic explosives, which the authorities said they seized from his baggage at a Manila airport in March. The court found him guilty on the explosives charge in July. Two Indonesians arrested with him, Abdul Jamal Balfas and Tamsil Linrung, were later released as authorities found they had not enough evidence to charge them.
"C4? Ummm... Nope. Not mine. Somebody musta put it in my luggage..."

#2  Anonymous, the gauleiter without a name:
We have your word for all of this, it must be true.
I suppose the tin-foil hat you wear to keep out our Zionist mind-control rays also allows you to read our thoughts, and speak for the whole world, and generalize about 280 million people.
Are you actually stupid enough to imagine that your authoritarian pronouncements will convince anyone of anything, beyond your own desperate need for the pathetic illusion of power?
Fuck you, Fascist nematode, and the drunken whore that whelped you.
