The virus trading club...
I got an email today from Indepundit, with whom I've never corresponded, with the "KLez Worm Immunity" (Just run it and you'll never get KLez! Trust us!) attachment. During the week, I get a couple emails with no messages, no attachments — they'd been firewalled off — and an email from a fellow I've never heard of asking about one that came in "my" name to him. Mike, at Cold Fury, has a similar story. Somebody's infected, and because so many of us correspond on a regular or irregular basis, bloggers' and readers' emails back and forth are not only more trusted than the usual run of Viagra offers, mortgage preapprovals, breast enhancements, or videos of people having sex with chickens, but also more welcome. So be careful.
If I email you, there won't be an attachment unless you ask for one — to date, two entire people have done so. And I won't send you a KLez "immunity" program to run.

#1  I've been getting a lot of this stuff for quite a while. I've had no problems because I run up-to-date strong virus protection behind an excellent firewall of my own. I have no idea what sort of firewall my ISP runs, although it does seem to be catching some stuff.

One more reason it's a good idea for people to take responsibility for their own protection. Nobody else is going to do it for you - not effectively, at least.

#2  Klez is particularly insidious that way; I've gotten any number of emails from various people telling me that I sent them the virus, even though my system is clean (in fact, I did a full system scan with NAV 2002 just yesterday and came up empty-handed). The thing is, Klez appears to search out _any_ email addresses that are in your client's address book, whether you're sending, receiving or CC'ing mail, and sends itself out under those names. For my own part, I use a utility called Mailwasher to delete any suspicious mail on the server _before_ it's downloaded to my own machine (it's also very handy for getting rid of spam - it'll send "bounce" messages back to the spammer telling them your address is no good), and have NAV's email auto-protection enabled. As a result, I think it's been weeks since any copy of Klez even made it into the quarantine directory, let alone was downloaded. (Not to mention that Klez is recognizable from the titles it uses over and over again for its infected emails, and also because the attachments are always a certain size, around 120 - 130K.

#3  The Klez virus has been very successful, even more so than its Melissa-type predecessors, at automating social engineering. Sophos indicates that for June it was 67% of all virus reports -- and some envelope math indicates that 80% of its mail comes from the relatively rare broadband users becuase they're on 24/7. Because it's silent the infected person has no idea it's sitting there working away.

It's no longer safe to just "be careful". You have to buy the $50 program AND you have to buy the $15 annual subscription. A boon for the anti-virus industry, for sure.

Another curio for my collection...
I downloaded Mozilla today because I haven't been testing to make sure my pages load right. Surprise! No changes for Win2K/Mozilla combination. I'm so surprised...

Three N.K. Asylum Seekers Leave China for South Korea
Three North Koreans, who sought asylum at the South Korean embassy in Beijing last month, left China for Bangkok Saturday en route to South Korea. The three, who took refuge at the embassy on June 24 and have since stayed there, are scheduled to arrive in South Korea via Thailand, sources said.
They'll be back. What's life without juche?

Talabani visiting Soddy Arabia...
A Saudi source has confirmed the arrival of the Iraqi Kurdish leader Jalal Talbani in the Kingdom. According to some reports, Talbani arrived in Saudi Arabia at the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) delegation. PUK is one of the two main Kurdish factions sharing control of northern Iraq, which Iraq lost control of during the 1991 Gulf war. The PUK shares control of the Iraqi Kurdistan with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) of Massoud Barzani. The PUK Foreign Affairs Chief Sadi Ahmad Pire was quoted as telling the press that Talbani, who is on his fourth visit to the Kingdom since the Gulf War, would stay in Saudi Arabia for several days and would hold talks with Saudi officials on issues related to the situation in Iraq. He could not immediately provide the names of the Saudi officials with whom Talbani would meet, but stressed the visit was part of the PUK's consultations with Iraq's neighbours. Talbani has already visited Syria, Turkey and Iran since March this year. Talabani will also visit some other countries in the region, possibly Kuwait and Jordan.
It looks like Talabani and probably Barzani are going to be pretty major actors in this impending drama. I guess it could be just coincidence that he's visited Syria, Turkey and Iran since March, and has plans to do Kuwait and Jordan when he leave Arabia — but the itinerary makes a pretty big argument that he's gathering promises.

Iran cracks down on unrest, infiltration...
Iran has launched a campaign against internal unrest as well as against infiltrators and insurgents from neighboring Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Islamic regime said it has arrested hundreds of people in the wake of violent protests in Iranian cities earlier this week. The demonstrations were held to mark the third anniversary of the 1999 student riots throughout Iran and included attempts to storm government buildings. The government newspaper Jomhuri Islami said more than 230 people have been arrested in Isfahan and Teheran. Most of those detained were in Teheran, rocked by protests and bloody clashes between students and Islamic vigilantes. Iranian police commander Mohammed Royanian said those arrested were charged with destroying cars and shops. Royanian said the protests were in violation of a ban on public assembly imposed by the Interior Ministry.
That's pretty interesting. The "bloody" part didn't come through as clearly in the initial reports. Clamping down, huh? That should be a good way to make the country more content...

#1  Sounds like someone found the Shah's 1979 'season in hell' playbook. If I remember right, it didnt work very well then either. for that matter, who does it work for? I can list regime after regime that tried this and the result is always the same result eventually ( special exception rule goes to the PRC - but the key word is 'eventually' )

So the way it works is this:

1. Clamp down on liberties to make them love you. 2. Blame 'outside agitators' for all the trouble. 3. Arrest and detain indiscrimently.

oh, yeah! that's gonna work, sure fire!

Khatami calls for US to apologise to Iranian people
President Mohammad Khatami called Sunday on the United States to apologise to the Iranian people and dismissed US President George W. Bush's call for democratic changes in the Islamic republic.
Wrong answer, Moh...
"I want to assure you there are no differences in Iran on the idea of defending the territorial integrity of the country and safeguarding its independence," Khatami said on state radio after a cabinet meeting.
"The fact that we kill each other in large numbers in our internal squabbles is no indication of weakness or instability..."
He called for US leaders "to apologise to the people and government (of Iran) and thus breach the wall of mistrust which separates the two countries. I propose American leaders abandon their mistaken beliefs regarding the world and Iran by asking for forgiveness from the people and Iranian government to repair the past."Khatami said Iran was "determined to follow the path towards progress, freedom and independence without any consideration for threats."
Ummm... How about if we propose unconditional surrender, an apology for the occupation and taking of hostages at our embassy, and the public trial and execution of most of their holy men for Iran?

7 injured in US-UK airstrikes on Iraq
US and British air raids on civilian targets wounded seven Iraqis on Saturday in southern Iraq, an Iraqi air defence spokesman said, quoted by the state's INA news agency.
... which is known as a paragon of truthfulness...
"Seven Iraqi citizens were wounded in enemy raids on civilian installations in the Zi Qar region" which lies about 375 kilometres south of Baghdad, the spokesman said. "The Americans and British have committed another crime against the... Iraqi people," he said. The jets retreated to Kuwaiti and Saudi airspace after coming under Iraqi anti-aircraft fire, the spokesman said. He added: "One of the enemy planes could have been grazed."
"Well, hell, we wuz just flyin' by at 600 miles an hour, and we seen this wedding party, so we figgered we'd shoot it up. They ain't no military targets for us in Iraq — ever'body knows that..."

Europe
Chirac survives assassination attempt
French President Jacques Chirac has survived an assassination attempt. The potentially fatal breach of security occurred when a man pulled a rifle out of a guitar case while Chirac was inspecting troops during the annual Bastille Day military parade in Paris. The gunman fired at least one shot before being arrested. The man was a right-wing extremist who intended to kill the French president, said Government minister Patrick Devedjian. A statement issued on behalf of the Paris police force said the 25-year-old was a member of "neo-Nazi and hooligan" groups, while France 2 television reported that he had a history of emotional problems.
The two are hardly exclusive...
The man's motives for attacking the centre-right leader were not immediately known.
Ummm... Lemme guess...?
In a traditional televised Bastille Day interview, which took place after the parade, President Chirac was not asked about the assassination attempt and did not mention it. Instead, he called for a radical tightening of France's asylum laws and called for the French military to be strengthened.
Good idea. And strengthen the coppers and the Surete as well. Clean up those "neo-Nazi and hooligan" groups, while you're at it.

Visa chief asked to resign...
The most senior U.S. career diplomat has been asked to resign amid an investigation that State Department staffers sold visas to Middle East nationals, including those connected to the Sept. 11 suicide attacks on New York and Washington. Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs Mary Ryan was asked to resign by Secretary of State Colin Powell. She was the most senior U.S. career diplomat and served in the post for eight years.
"Time for you to move on, Mary. There are opportunities just waiting for you in the food service industry..."
Deputy State Department spokesman Philip Reeker said Ms. Ryan agreed to Powell's request to resign. Reeker said the dismissal was not connected to the visa scandal or criticism of the rapid processing of applications by Saudi nationals to enter the Untied States.
No, no. Of course not. Certainly not. The thought never occurred to us...

India-Pakistan
25 killed in Jammu attack
From Greater Kashmir newspaper (link only good for a day):
Director General of Police Ashok Suri said that militants hurled two grenades and then sprayed bullets indiscriminately in a densely populated slum dwellers colony in Kasim Nagar, killing 26 persons and injuring 32. The residents of the locality were busy watching the India versus England cricket match when the firing began. "Thirteen persons died on the spot while others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital," Suri said. The dead included 13 women, 11 men and a three-year-old child. The toll is likely to go up because of the severe nature of injuries received by the injured who are undergoing hospitalisation in different city hospitals. Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu, Farooq Khan said that the gunment, believed to be three in number, escaped the scene under the under the cover of darkness into upper forest areas of Bhatandi, after a fierce encounter with security forces lasting nearly four hours. More than 100 people were trapped at the scene of enounter while the gunbattle was going on. The entire belt has been sealed off and massive combing operations launched to nab the gunmen involved in the killings.
More on this from The Hindu newspaper:
Eyewitnesses told The Hindu that the militants in their early twenties, with carry bags, entered the locality, and had refreshments at a local shop, before launching the attack. There were conflicting reports on whether the militants were dressed in sadhu [holy man] robes.
Since the words "war crimes" are trotted out every time a member of the Bush administration uses the wrong fork, I'd like to point out at this point that an unprovoked attack on a crowd of impoverished slum dwellers watching a televised cricket game, in which the targets are unarmed and the majority of the casualties are women and children, might qualify as a real war crime. Perhaps the International Criminal Court bunch would like to begin an investigation into this incident this afternoon?

#1  Did the perps really "get away" after being surrounded by security forces? Authorities in J & K don't always disclose identities of captive terrorists. And whenever they capture one, they have ways of getting all the information they need.

#2  At night, close to the forest, with a hundred civilians worrying about keeping their heads down... Yeah. I can believe they got away. Apparently the Indos don't have helicopters with searchlights in the air and dogs - bloodhounds and rottweilers - on the ground. And they should.

India blames Pak, Lashkar-e-Taiba for slum attack
India blamed Pakistan on Sunday for an attack by suspected Islamic guerrillas on a crowded slum in Jammu-Kashmir state that killed at least 27 Hindus. Pakistan, which India accuses of harboring and backing the militants, also denounced Saturday's attack, saying it seemed designed to raise tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
I'd have to agree with Pak on that. Things have gotten entirely too calm for the fundos...
The top panel on security from India's Cabinet met to discuss how to respond. Afterward, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani traveled to the massacre site Sunday and was to report back to the prime minister later in the day. "It is clear that all this is being carried out with the inspiration of Pakistan. It was a gruesome attack," Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha told private Aaj Tak television. The attack comes ahead of a visit by Secretary of State Colin Powell to both capitals this month in a bid to ease tensions.
Which was yet another reason for the Bad Guys to try something spectacular. If you can't stand the idea of peace, you'll do anything to avert it.
India's junior interior minister, I.D. Swamy, also linked the guerrillas to Pakistan. "Pakistan arms them, helps them and sends them. We believe it is Lashkar-e-Taiba that carried out yesterday's attack," he said, referring to the most feared of more than a dozen Pakistan-based Islamic groups fighting for Kashmir's independence from India or merger with mostly Muslim Pakistan. "Elections are about to happen, and militants' groups are trying to create terror."
While I have no illusions about Pakland and its involvement in Kashmir, I think the remaining Bad Guys in the area are and have been loose cannons that Islamabad can't control. They'd as soon turn on Perv as fight against the Infidel Hindoos. The difference is that India sees them as enemies and Pak tries to pretend they're friends. Their purpose is to drag the two sides into a war so they can pick up the pieces when it's over, and they don't give a hoot about either Pak or India, instead reserving their loyalties for the impending Khalifate.

News from the Other Side: Paks postpone operations in NWFP
A military operation in search of Al-Qaida and Taliban men in Oorakzai and Kuram Agency has been postponed for a multitude of reasons, not least the losses the Pakistani Army has suffered in encounters with the Mujahideen. A recent clash in Wana Azam Warsak 10 Pakistani Soldiers were killed with many injured. Whilst in an encounter in Kohat near Jarma Bridge two intelligence officers were killed. Furthermore, the support of local Tribal people for these Mujahideen has forced the Pakistani Government to rethink its operation, irritating the US which was keen to implement the mission.
Sure hope this is wishful thinking on the part of the Bad Guys. If the Paks back off now, they're ceding that entire part of the country to a foreign power...
Approximately 7000 military and para-military troops have been in position in the North and South Waziristan for over a month searching for Mujahideen to kill, with little or no success. These troops are being supported by US commandos and FBI agents with highly sophisticated equipment. The FBI agents and US commandos have set up base camp at Kohat.

Indian man's head lopped off in Soddy Arabia
An Indian expatriate convicted of killing three Saudi women was beheaded by the sword in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah Friday. The man, Shahnaz Mohammad Ali, was found guilty of beating and strangling to death Hashima bint Zafr al-Jadaani, Fatima bint Muaili al-Jadaani and Hayat bint Mohammad al-Jadaani when they caught him burgling their houses. The beheading brought to 23 the number of executions in Saudi Arabia this year, according to interior ministry statements.
Doesn't sound like he was using that head, anyway. If he'd gone to Europe and done the same thing they'd have put him in counseling...

Middle East
Talks on public aid delayed by Israel
Israeli officials postponed high-level talks with the Palestinians yesterday, saying they needed more time to consult before discussing ways to improve the humanitarian situation in Palestinian areas. Palestinian Cabinet Minister Saeb Erekat said the meeting last night was to have covered political, economic and security issues - a broader agenda than in two rounds of talks last week, the first high-level meetings in months. But an Israeli official said the meeting was only for discussion of improving humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians and finding a way to ensure that aid not be funneled toward attacks on Israelis.
Sometimes I think Saeb just says anything that pops into his head, but then I remind myself that he speaks fluent Propaganda. It's a heavy enough concern to work out some way for the grocery money not to go into the explosives industry, especially since groceries run out for the Paleostinians at a faster rate than the cordite. One thing at a time would seem reasonable, but then, I believe in cause and effect, too, so I might be wrong...
The official said the meeting would be rescheduled after Sharon meets with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and other key ministers, probably early this week. Israel's Channel One television said the talks were scrapped because Sharon and the more moderate Peres disagreed on the terms.
"Yeah. We'll get back to you on that, Saeb..."

Israel: Suicide attacks foiled
Israeli forces captured a Palestinian gunman Saturday night near the West Bank border who they believe was planning a suicide attack on Israel, according to the Israel Defense Forces. The man was taken into custody after he opened fire on Israeli troops conducting searches in the village of Anin, about 12 kilometres (8 miles) northwest of Jenin, the IDF said. The man led the Israeli forces to an explosives-laden belt he had hidden near Anin. The IDF said they believed he was planning to carry out a suicide attack against Israeli citizens.
Probably a pretty good bet. Those belts don't go with any other outfit. The Paleos are pretty desperate by now to get somebody in there to explode to dispel the illusion that some sort of progress is being made...

Israeli Planes Strike Gaza Strip
Israeli aircraft fired missiles and destroyed a building in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday, injuring about 10 Palestinians, witnesses and hospital officials said. Three Israeli helicopters and two fighter planes were in the sky at the time of the strike on the three-story building in Qarara, near the town of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, witnesses said. Residents said the building was empty at the time of the attack but that the flying debris injured about 10 people. Three were taken to the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis and seven were treated at the scene, witnesses said. Firefighters put out the ensuing blaze. The reason for the attack was not clear.
This story's from the Associated Press, by Ibrahim Barzak. It's understandable that Barzak's views on the matter make it into his writing. But the editors at the Baltimore Sun must have simply dumped this in raw, without reading it. Remember, the reason for the attack's not at all clear...
A member of the militant Hamas movement, Ahmed Abdel Wahab, had lived in the building until his death several months ago.
Did they want to blow the house because a bad guy used to live there? I doubt it...
A relative, Yusef Abdel Wahab, is a member of Hamas' military wing and has been living in the building. He left only moments before Sunday's strike and was not harmed.
Nope. Still can't seem to figger why they rocketed the place. Sorry...
The air strike followed Palestinian mortar attacks Saturday night and Sunday morning at the Jewish settlement of Kfar Darom. No one was hurt at the settlement, just a few miles from the scene of the air strike.
Ummm... Nope. Still searching for a reason... Oh. Could that be it? Nawww...

Jordan wants Paleostinians to post bond
Jordanian authorities have begun imposing banking guarantees on West Bank Palestinians arriving in the country by land to ensure they do not overstay their visit. The guarantees range from almost $3,000 to $7,000, depending on the nature of the visit. The money must be deposited in a Jordanian bank for the duration of the stay. The decision was taken by Jordanian officials after talks with their Palestinian counterparts last week. The move now clears the way visits by thousands of Palestinians stranded in the West Bank who had been awaiting Jordanian authorisation to cross. Jordan had imposed restrictions on the West Bank Palestinians crossing by land at the end of March to avoid any Israeli attempt to expel them.
Jordan doesn't want Paleostinians to cross the border and settle in their country. They've already got enough of them - 1.7 million, in fact. If Paleostinians were industrious, hard-working people not given to rioting and insurrection that probably wouldn't be the case; but what country wants to accept large numbers of immigrants who're liable to explode without warning? Obviously it's some sort of a plot or conspiracy, of course, but it's kinda hard to find the Jews who control Jordan...

Arafat, PA stashing dough overseas
The Palestinian Authority has transferred tens of millions of dollars overseas in case of a long-term Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. An Israeli document, quoted by Yediot Aharonot newspaper, accuses Yasser Arafat of having transferred $5.1 million into the Parisian bank account of his wife Suha.
This is a separate $5.1 million from the dough he stashed in Cairo in his own name?
The document also refers to a transfer of $70 million by Mahmud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, the number two in the PLO, the paper added, without saying where the money had been sent. The funds were being set aside for financing the activities of the Palestinian leadership in the event of it being forced into exile. A senior Israeli source confirmed to AFP that Israel had handed the United States a document showing "considerable transfers of funds" by the Palestinian Authority.
Just setting aside some cash to finance a revolution, and maybe to buy some groceries — a little pate, some champagne, a few scantily clad chorus girls to serve them, nothing ostentatious, mind you...
But a senior Arafat aide slammed the allegations as Israeli propaganda aimed at diverting the attention of the diplomatic "quartet" of the United States, Russia, the European Union and United Nations which meets Tuesday to discuss reviving the peace process. "This information is part of the lies and rumours which are being put around by the Israelis before the quartet meeting," Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP by telephone.
"Lies! All lies!"

Egypt won't send forces to PA...
President Hosni Mubarak says Egypt will not send military forces to the Gaza Strip in an effort to maintain order in the Palestinian areas.
Wonder if they changed their minds because the operation was blown a couple weeks ago?
Mubarak told the semi-government Al Ahram daily on Friday that Egypt does not intend to send forces to Palestinian areas despite the erosion of the Palestinian Authority. He denied that Cairo had ever pledged to maintain security in the Gaza Strip, disputing assertions that such a promise was relayed by the late President Anwar Sadat when he signed a peace agreement with Israel in 1979. "Egypt cannot send in forces to maintain security in the Palestinian territories," Mubarak said.
Did I just hear a sigh of relief from Khan Younis?
Arab diplomatic sources had raised the prospect of Egyptian military intervention in the Gaza Strip in an effort to prop up Arafat's regime. The sources said such a prospect was discussed during the visit last week by Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman to Israel and the PA.
I wonder if that's a real "no" or it's an idea to go onto the back burner for after the IDF cleans the place out? I suspect it's a real "no," because a serious clean-out would have repercussions later if a rational Paleostinian state doesn't come into being...

Oh, how the Soddy money rolls in...
A new Israeli report relayed to the United States details what officials term has been Saudi financing for Palestinian insurgents. The report is based on Palestinian Authority documents captured during the Israeli military offensive in the West Bank in April. The documents detail the flow of funds by Saudi government institutions to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The PA did not receive direct Saudi funding, according to the documents. "The documents clearly unveil that Saudi Arabia transferred inter alia large sums of money in a systematic and ongoing manner to families of suicide terrorists to the Hamas organization and to persons and entities identified with Hamas," the Israeli report, which has been relayed to the United States, said.
We knew that...
A source of funding for Hamas, the report said, was the Riyad-based Saudi Committee for Support of the Palestinian Uprising, Al Quds, an organization headed by Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz. The committee reported the transfer of $55.7 million mostly to the families of suicide bombers and to the families of imprisoned or injured Palestinian insurgents.
No surprises, but it's nice to have it down on paper...

Terrorists planning attack on RP embassy in Jakarta
International terrorists are planning to bomb the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, senior police and military intelligence officers revealed. Indonesia-based groups, Ribitutal Mujahideen (RM) and Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) are planning to attack the embassy to avenge the arrests and sentencing in Manila of two comrades. Fathur Al Ghozi and Agus Dwikarna have seen separately convicted for possession of explosives, which were reportedly earmarked for major terrorist attacks. Ghozi is a member of JI and Dwikarna of RM. At a briefing in Camp Aguinaldo, a senior military source, claimed the bombing plan had the blessing of Riduan Isamudin, alias Hambali, a senior Indonesian militant. “They have been planning to bomb the Philippine interest long before (the sentencing this month of Dwekarna),” the officer said. The Philippine National Police Anti-Terrorism Task Force is now coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs to tighten security at the embassy.
Being Islamists, it's necessary to get revenge, preferably bloody revenge, when one can't have one's way...
